awesome teacher, probably the smartest man at bryant
No Comments
Prof. Dietrich is an awesome teacher and I learned a lot from him. My favorite professor at Bryant thus far. Likes a lot of participation from the class and clearly defines work.
probably the best professor at Bryant
Besides a class record of 47 Keep In Minds during one class, he is an excellent professor. He wants you to learn the material and knows his stuff flat. Very easygoing.
nice guy that knows his stuff, have to participate
one of the best teachers I've ever had
Awesome teacher, learn a real lot from, every class interesting
Guy knows his ****, only one negative experience with him. An hour after the World Trade Towers had been hit I was sitting in his class, he would not speculate, instead he gave us a 20min ultimatum speach of having class or not...just spit it out John.
Kind of monotone, puts you to sleep, but he is smart, and very into what he does.

Sheer brilliance. Follow his ramblings: deep and thorough. Kinda nit-picky when grading. I tend to be more of a rambler: he's helped me with that though. A lot of 'Bonus Word Combos' such as therefore ultimately however fun stuff though!
So smart. My favorite professor so far. Write down everything he says and puts on the board and you'll do fine. Incredibly smart man.
interesting guy knows what hes talking about... tests arent too bad he gives the essay questions before hand which is a big help... only guy to keep me concentrating for a full hour on international crap...
Great guy, he knows the subject and teaches it well. His problem is viewing other opinions, and on tests you to regurgitate everything he says in class back to him; EVERYTHING. Take the class if you want to learn, if you want anything above a B, DONT!!!
Good guy. Hell help you if you seek his help. VERY smart. Take everything he says in your notes and you will do fine. Leactures, but is very smart so its interesting. I think some things he says are gramatically incorrect..Can be a tough grader.
This guy is a smart man but he is the most boring teacher I ever had, his monotone voice is enough to put you asleep. On the first midterm one of the essays wasnt even discussed in class causing myself to do poorly. Never take him again.
Knows his stuff, and you'll learn a lot. Makes the material interesting, but I have a real problem with his grading. He expects way too much and you end up working too hard for a mediocre grade.
Very smart, knows his stuff. Lectures can get boring at times, but that is due to his monotone voice. Take notes and you will do good on his tests. Test are short answer and essay. Grading is fair.
One of the best professors i've ever had. Has a clear and fun teaching style and really holds your attention. His testes are a little tough but there are weekly short papers that really help your grade. Definitely take him if you can!
Ive had him for a few classes, and it seems this semester (Fall03) hes gotten a lot tougher on grading. Very difficult to get an A, but not much work. Boring, but Id recommend
Lectures can get boring at times, but easy to follow to take notes, if you ask for help he'll deffinetly help you, overall he's a great guy
So,so.
Good, interesting lectures. If you don't like lectures at all no matter what, then don't take him. But if you like a very good lecture, take him. Extremely smart man. Not easy, but not hard.
Lectures all class. Monotone voice puts you to sleep. Interesting if you can stay awake. Fair grader. Final paper is worth a lot. Think analytically about every issue, its causes and effects and you'll be fine.
I don't think he's that smart. A lot of the claims he makes in class, is just what the media goes by, but not the real facts. He's boring, but 0 work. If you wanna learn just nonsense stuff you can read in the newspaper, he's your guy. But if you want your mind to get stretched, forget him
Don't know what the last person is on but this guy's a genius. Very smart. Very good lecturer. Take him.
Extremely intelligent, he pulls information together in a very clear and presentable manner. The tests and grading are fair. I highly recommend him.
he is an amazing teacher by far my favorite, he knows what he's talking about and i would take his class again in an instant his tests are short essays but as long as you study you'll do fine he's an amazing teacher by far the best one ever
Once he starts talking, he can't not stop. He is a smart professor. If you like international politics, you should def. take him. All his exams are essay and short answer type, so it's kind of hard to get an A. You'll learn a lot in his class.
Maybe i had a different John Dietrich than the rest of the people who rated him, but trust me when i say i did not enjoy this class. He was never available for help when i needed it. His classes are boring and dont involve class discussion. Speaks too fast and doesnt have time to breath.
I musta had a different dietrich too, this guy was bad, the most boring class i had, likes to hear his own voice and skips around too much, very unclear with his lectures
This guy is very very smart. He lectures, but they are probably the best lectures at Bryant. The people who rated him badly probably don't have an interest in Political Science. If you do, TAKE HIM! He isn't easy, but he certaily isn't hard. Very nice guy, very very helpful and available when needed
This class made me cross eyed. Talks like a maniac. I feel so bad for him it makes him cute. Take him for the entertainment
Really interesting, but does talk fast. Take good notes and pay attention.
Good guy, knows his stuff really well. Talks constantly all class. you need to talk good notes, thats all its about. I havent even read any of the material and I do well on the tests. Pay attention, notes, should get you by well enough.
Tests are kinda hard, but if you take good notes, you will do fine. Talks constantly in class, but knows his stuff. Gives 6 2-page assignements, so the average can help bring your grade. All in all, not bad.
one of the smartest professors at bryant. he knows everything about govt and politics. tests are kind of hard but if you take good notes in class the questions come straight from the notes. all in all, you will learn alot in this class
Dietrich is one of the best profs, he knows everything from Poli Sci to Int'l Studies to Legals. Weekly papers in POLS, but they help your grade and he's available if u need help. Int'l and Pols there was a 5-8 page paper at the end. Take good notes, they really help for the tests, which arent bad!
SOOOOOOO BORING! Rambles on and on and does not involve the class at all. Must take REALLY good notes because he expects a lot of detail on exams. Always lets the class out about 5 minutes late. Although, he does not take attendance, is available for help if you need it, and theres no homework.
This is a great professor, definately the best POLS prof. at Bryant and the best POLS prof I have come across. He knows his stuff inside and out and avoids the major pitfall of most Poli Sci professors...he doesn't take sides. He will outline all the major arguments on an issue, and basically let you decide. I consider myself a politics junky though, so I loved it. Though after taking his class I still can't figure out his political affiliations, even though he worked on many campaigns before teaching.
Good command on the subject matter. You will learn alot of relevent information. Only downside is you can tell he doesn't think too highly of Bryant students.
Another good experience. Recommended
very MONOTONE voice. If you enjoy dry humor .. he is the guy for you. Its all about the notes. His entire tests are from your notes. He poses a question at the begining of the class and basically answer it the entire class. DON'T SLEEP ON THOSE QUESTIONS.. you will see them again on your test sometimes word for word.
Awesome teacher, really knows the material, makes it interesting and challenges a bunch of business students to take notice of whats going on in the world take good notes and you will do really well on tests, also go see him about your papers, he is a tough grader but you will figure out his style once u see him...
Very smart and he can teach very well.
Great Professor
He knows his stuff. The class is worth taking and interesting. 6 short papers, lowest score is disregarded. One long paper and two exams other than the final. If you take good notes, and pay attention you'll do well in the class
This guy gets better every time I take him for something. Bryant is lucky to have such a genius. Take him!
Extremely intelligent and very sexy. Totally worth it.
Great class, great professor, hard grader on papers though
he is AWESOME.he definitely knows his stuff, and i really don't mind going to his class. you take a lot of notes in class, but there's not really much bookwork at all. DEFINITELY take him if you can-he's a great teacher and he knows how to explain things so they make sense. he actually manages to make boring things really interesting
I took Prof. Dietrich for politics, and he made it a great class. He is definitely a cool guy, loves the subject, makes it interesting. No homework in this class, he gives you a list of outside readings, but doesn't care if you read them. Tests are a little tough, essay and short answer format, and there is a 6-8 pg paper in the end.
I dont know who would say he is a good teacher, he could have the most monotonous voice I've ever heard, and his awkwardness in front of the class made me nervous. He wasn't that interesting and not an easy grader....take Hubbard instead.
Class is kind of boring due to his monotone voice, the guy really knows his stuff. I like history alot and didn't really have any problem with the class but he grades hard! So unless you're good at writing essays and papers you might struggle in this class...
I have had him for a bunch of classes and I don't notice a monotonous voice. His classes fly by if you like politics and he is super smart. He grades paper stuff hard, but rewards those who put an effort in in the end. Your grade never is just a calculation and is can be chnaged if you show him you care. I know him well, hes dam good.
Probably the best teacher at Bryant..had him for a lot of classes and learned a lot in each...not the easiest you do have to do work...however he is very helpful and if you do bad on something he'll let you know how to fix it for next time...def take him
The last person must have skipped a bunch of classes, and I gurantee didn't go to office hours because this man puts his heart and soul into every student if they need the help. Tough paper grader, but like most professors, papers are subjectively graded. HE DOES NOT CARE WHAT SIDE YOU TAKE!! FOOLISH COMMENT. He's awesome, Take him!!!!!
great teacher & class! i loved this class. his lectures are really interesting, and easy to pay attention to. take notes durring lectures, and you wont have to read a thing. tests come straight from lecture material.
This guy knows what hes talking about. One of the best teachers at Bryant, he can teach the subject extremley well. He wants his students to do well and is willing to help everyone. I'm taking him for the third time next semester and its a lock for a good class.
Dietrich teaches you everything you need to know in class. His lectures are extremely interesting and very well planned out. He puts so much into his lectures and it really really shows. He simply does an amazing job. He will make you love politics even if you hate it. I've taken him twice and am now taking him a third time, very worth it.
easily one of the best profs at Bryant, he knows his stuff and you learn alot during his classes, just go to class pay attention and take notes and you should get a B, taken him twice and looking foward to takeing him again
Very tough class, lots of work. 26 1 pg papers, a 15-20 pg research paper, 2 exams and a leader discussion make up the course grades. You must be willing to participate and take impeccable notes for his exams. One of hte best teachers I've ever had, and extremely helpful. Highly recommended.
He knows enough about global politics that he could teach this class in his sleep. Very interesting, easy to get a B if you just pay attention in class.
Workload is very light, you do one paper, and have three exams. The best part about this class is that you don't have to read any of the books. Everything on the exam is covered in class. Although it can get boring at times, notes are a must. Exams are difficult, and he is a hard grader, but if you study your notes, its an easy B.
He is a very smart guy, but the class is just really boring. Lecture style and the tests are essays. One paper and 3 tests is your grade.
This man knows it all. The class can be boring if it's not your "jam." For the most part the class is very interesting and you will learn a significant amount. There is quite a bit of reading and weekly 2 pg single space papers. It can be a real pain in the ass but he accepts late work. Just don't fall behind. I'd Recommend this class
My favorite professor ever. If you have the chance to take Ethics in International Affairs DO IT. Short summary every week, no final exam, discussions every Friday. It's awesome.
I took intro to global politics as an honors class and loved it! I never would have thought I would have liked the course, but Professor Dietrich makes it so easy to understand and enjoy. The material is current and interesting. It's very easy to get a B in the class, but very difficult to get an A. He's a pretty hard grader and looks for specifics
Great professor, everything is from his lectures so notes are really important. He's a hard grader but as long as you pay attention you should end up with anything lower than a B.
Excellent Professor. This course is challenging; however, if you come to class, study for the exams, put some effort into the paper, and participate, you will do well. Grade consists of 3 essay-style exams, 1 paper, research on one country, and participation. Interesting lectures; he clearly knows what he's talking about. Tough but fair grader.
Very smart man, really knows what he's talking about. Tough grader, but going to his office hours is extremely helpful. His lectures are interactive and interesting. You can miss class but I'd recommend getting the notes from a friend, they'll come in handy for the exams. Don't need to do the reading. One of my favorite professors!!
Overall a GREAT professor, one of the smartest people I have ever met. Even if you are not interested in politics it is very enjoyable. Difficult to get an A but hard to get below a B, you will definitely learn quite a bit from this guy.
Awesome Teacher. Makes class interesting. You have to read for the class in order to participate though.
Overall great professor. Knows what he is talking about and makes everything very clear. If you are not sure on something he will clarify it for you. Makes class very interactive and appeals to all types of learning styles. Would definitely recommend taking him.
Really nice guy. Knows exactly what he's talking about. Class is basically lecturing the whole time, little class participation. He doesn't take attendance. Weekly assignment and summary due every Friday. Tests are difficult because he wants the answers in his EXACT words, so take really good notes. Overall not that hard of a class.
Professor John Dietrich is the smartest guy I have ever met. You can literally throw any question at him and he will answer it with full clarity. His class is lecture, but he is very organized in presenting the material. The papers and exams are straight forward and he is just looking for you to know the material and explain in depth.
Very knowledgeable in his subject. He seems awkward when no one answers his questions in class. Very detailed dates on the syllabus, lots of reading assignments, 10 of them you will have to summarize for easy points, just prove you read the articles. Gives a study guide for tests, however there are 3x more terms on it than you will be tested on
I had the most unforgettable class discussions in his class. Very knowledgeable and very open minded. He respects every single idea even though it doesn't make any sense. He tries to see from the student's perspective. Isn't it what we need in college? Take him , at the end of the semester you will feel privileged.
He is a solid professor who probably knows too much and teaches it in a good way. The course is broken down well for you to succeed from a grading perspective. Lectures the whole time, but if you go to class you can avoid doing any reading outside of class. Overall, good professor and makes the class interesting to go to.
I took him twice now and enjoyed both classes. This one has no exams so its all papers. Lectures the whole time. Each week two reading summaries which is a bit of a pain but helps when writing the papers. You also lead a discussion with a partner which is nice. 20% is participation. I would recommend the course and him as a professor. Cant go wrong
Dietrich is a great professor to have. He is so knowledgeable about his classes and cares about you. Even if you dont think he knows who you are he does, he is a bit awkward at times but is very good at what he does. He can be a little tough on grading but is clear ahead of time with what to expect. Would defiantly take again.
Dietrich is a great guy. Lectures basically every class, but he makes it comprehensible. He made the class enjoyable. One thing to make sure of is that you ask him if you need help with anything; he is extremely accessible outside of class and can make the topic adapt to anything (he explained it to me in terms of a basketball)
You have to try to fail this class, but getting an A is no easy task. He is extremely knowledgeable in his field but expects you to go into so much detail on exams when this is a 200 level course. He doesn't use a textbook and doesn't use notes he just speaks off the top of his head, can make it difficult to study for exams
Professor Dietrich is one of the best professors Ive had at Bryant so far. He gives really good lectures that keep the class engaged and I definitely learned a lot from him. Hes a tough grader but he always gave good feedback which helped me improve. Highly recommend taking his class.
Not only one of the best professors but one of the best teachers I've ever had. It was an honors class so you had to work hard for a good grade, but Professor Dietrich was always available for help if you needed it and provided excellent feedback. There is a lot of reading which is not checked, although helpful for class discussions.
Very calm individual who is clearly intelligent with his given subject. Sometimes can be vague with answers. I wouldn't say he is a tough grader, but he makes you work to find the answer. Lectures can be boring if taken for long durations.
Professor Dietrich is knowledgeable, and his class was interesting. It wasn't super hard, not much homework, a group project/discussion, an individual long essay, plus a couple of exams. He generally makes it clear what he is looking for and is willing to give feedback. Getting an A is not easy but a B shouldn't be hard. I'd recommend taking him.
Professor Dietrich is a very knowledgeable professor. My rating is not low because of my grade, but only because I personally cannot learn from him like others (my major also isn't POLS so I won't need to take him again). He knows what he is talking about, but when it comes to exams, it is VERY difficult to give the perfect answer. TAKE NOTES!!
Very difficult to get a good grade in this class. Class structure/formatting is very useless/unorganized. Style of note taking is writing lists/tables of different government/political structures. There is no textbook just online readings and no review or information given prior to an exam. Grade is only represented by three exams and two papers.
Professor Dietrich is super knowledgeable, but his grading is tough. The material is interesting, so attend class, take notes, and use unstuck AI for study prep. Overall, a worthwhile challenge.
Super easy class, guy is super interesting but the class can be a snooze. Theres not many assignments and attendance isnt taken. Class is interesting and anyone who likes international politics should try and take his class.
