During the whole class, he reads his notes from the projeter. Taking notes is the easiest way for me to learn, so I liked his style of teaching. Yet, it seemed he lacked a little energy.
Prepare to takes LOTS of notes. All he really did in class was read nots off the projector while you copied. Not a very interesting teacher. Tests were somewhat difficult, but if you try, you will pass.
He's a terrific lecturer and so very helpful. Made American hist. interesting. I don't think his exams are too hard, but he grades them hard, so make sure you write what he's looking for. I'd outline the essay questions first, then check with him to makesure you've covered everything.
his lectures are somewhat interesting, but he gives a great study guide for his test, so its really hard to fail this guy! Follow his study guide and you'll pass!
he is one of the best history teachers every. his midterms and finals are from the sylibus. he gives you 3 questions, and he will choose 2 to be on the test. then you would have to answer one. Go to his office hours. he will give you the hints of what is on the test. i got a B+ in his class.
best us history prof. ive ever had. his class is easy!!!! and still a lot of students complain that his midterms and finals are difficult. please! give me a break! easy final and midterm. he gives them to you on the first day of class! so you'll be a knuckle head if you fail his class! i recommend you to take him if you want an eady A. one thing, r
Good teacher, just study his outline that he gives you for in the syllabus about what the midterm and final will be about. He is very clear about what he wants.
really liked the class.
Great instructor for an otherwise crappy subject. My only real complaint was the huge emphasis on essay exams. Discussion and lectures were insightful and fun and almost made me start liking US history. Study guide was also very useful. If you want a good history instructor, take it with this guy! (But why would you want to even take history?!)
One of the best history teachers I ever had! His study guide is terrific and he's terrific, gives interesting and insightful lectures, has a good attitude, and wants his students to do well.
He makes history interesting. He'll give you the possible exam questions on the first day so start preparing as soon as you can. You should make copies of his outline notes which are in the library. It's an easy class and you can learn too.
He makes American History VERY interesting. Very helpful, just go to his office hours, and he's willing to help you formulate your essays for his exams. His Study guide is excellent. I never liked American History, but because of him, I am starting to like it, in fact, I think I'm hooked. To me, I don't think he's boring at all during his letures.
Class is very laidback (open book exams), but don't get lazy. Attend every class and in the end it will pay off.
Prof Donovan is great! The first day of class when he passes out the syllabus, the midterm questions and the final questions are all there. You get a hole 10 weeks to study!! Believe it or not he actually mades US History fun. He is very loud and clear. One midterm, one EASY paper, and a Final. Easy "A" class. Take him!!!
Was an amazing professor. He had no issue with answering questions that students presented in class. The best thing was that he would admit that he didn't know a question if he didn't, and would find out the answer for you within a week. Very excellent Professor and easy to understand.
Excellent teacher. He makes history very exciting and interesting so you don't fall asleep. He also gives you the questions for the midterm and final essay in advance. (Hint: more detail you are on your essays the more points you receive.) Easy "A" if you write well on the essays.
Easy class. I am an "anti-history" type of student, I got an A in this class, and I never opened the book. The professor is very straightforward in his expectations as well, not too horrible to sit through either. -202A
Very nice and easy teacher. He gave us the outlines for the whole class at the first week. He takes roll call by passing a sign in sheet.
Really good class. The syllabus outlines the class and its on your own to study. I enjoyed it.
Great professor! His class is interesting and he explains everything well. You can obtain a complete copy of his lectures from the library which is helpful. He also provides many opportunities for easy extra credit points. Easy A if you are thorough when when doing exams and papers. Very easy to talk to and seek help from.
Prof. Donovan was a very good teacher. He practically gave us the midterm and final... All you had to do was study all the terms and study 2 questions. One paper, 4 videos, and no hw... You don't need the book and you can get all his notes in the library. He takes roll by a sign-in sheet and I recommend him. Easy A and also gives extra credit.
Got the outline as soon as he told us to the first day, it's very useful. I got an A- in the class.
borring!!!
Very easy class. Great preofessor, explains everything thoroughly. He gives a study guide for midterm and final, all you have to do is study that. He gives attendance points so go to class.
Boring class. Gives out the midterm&final questions for you to study. Most people just cheat though. Attendance is your grade; extra credit offered. Nice in class, harsh when it comes to grading your work. If you wrote "3pm" he would cross it out and put "3:09". He's vague about what he wants, and gets angry when you don't do things right. Blehh.
Dr.Donovan is a nice guy, he gives 10% extra credit and he makes some very boring subjects interesting. He picks great movies for the class. For the tests make sure you write down everything about the terms, he's picky about this. I lost 7 points for being brief in my answers for midterm. I'm looking forward to taking 202 A with him.Spell correctly!
Professor Donovan is pretty laid back but serious about attendance. You can't anticipate sneaking out 20 minutes after roll and still get credit. Straight up lecture and some movies. Extra credit helped me with my grade A LOT. Be EXTRA THOROUGH on exams. I failed the midterm for not saying enough but I went on for pages on final and scored an A.
Easy but boring. Speaks loud so you wont fall asleep. He really knows his stuff, its amazing. You'll learn alot of interesting facts. Lectures are all power point, 2 exams and 1 paper. He tells you what to study and the paper is based on a movie. You also have opportunities to extra credit. I recommend him!
He gives you a paper to review for the test and midterm which are the only writing you really need to do in the class. You dont need to take notes because he gives them to you on a powerpoint you can download. He is very strict on what he wants, its hard to give him what he wants.
Very straightforward lecture/Powerpoint class. Midterm and finals are in-class essays, which are not that hard if you study. The only paper was a review of a historical movie. Gives extra credit opportunities.
1 midterm, 1 final, 3 in class movies and 1 book report. His class is easy, straightforward but don't just BS the essays because he wants to see that you've actually studied. Offers extra credit. Boring class to sit in but not bad for history
Gives you the midterm and finals question on the first day of class; this lets you know exactly what to study for. Knows his stuff extremely well. Gives extra credit opportunities. Pretty cool guy. Don't really have to pay attention in class haha
ok if you guys are not history majors then you DO NOT have to buy the textbook. I bought the textbook and it was a waste of money. I used the textbook once and realized it was a waste of time. the reason why is because he gives you the study guide and inclass notes that are straight forward. Just study the guide and you will pass. I got an A.
don't buy the book. gives you study guide for midterm and final on the first day of class. Go to his office hours after finishing the study guide. He practically gives you the answers to it. but he wont give it to you if you dont do it. Easy A if you do the study guide.
I loved this guy. He was a good story teller and really presented the lessons with facts sprinkled with cool tidbit stories. I wish I could re-take this class, but I got an A and enjoyed every class as well as the reading. Make this guy the History Chair. I thought the class was going to be boring and came away liking this part of history as "cool"
The class was so boring!!! If you can deal with a boring class and a LOUD professor, you'll be fine. Dont buy the book.Just know your key terms and essay topics well and you should be good! If you suck at writing, good luck because he grades your grammar not just the content of your papers. Easy Class!
Easy class if you study for the midterm and final, he gives a study guide the first day for both that basically tells you what he will put on the final. there is One paper on a movie he will choose. He offers extra credit! I did not buy the text book and earned an A.
He is really hard. Expects a lot out of you. His notes are very vague. He grades quite hard on grammar and specifics. You need to memorize everything word by word. He does not want brief answers. I barely passed the midterm and failed the book report even though I wrote a very detailed one.
I took this class based on the ratings and discovered that he isn't as easy as the ratings describe him to be. He is very picky on the papers/exams, but does help you out if you're lost. He gives you the midterm/final in advance, but you need to memorize A LOT of information. Study and understand everything and you'll at least pass. Good Luck.
Nice guy and always available to help during his office hours. The syllabus he gives on the first day is very helpful and gives you possible midterm and final questions. He's very clear in what he wants and if you study well enough, you can do well. You need to memorize a lot of info and he is picky w/ writing but overall not too bad for history.
Really nice and easy professor. He tells you and gives you a study guide for the midterm and final on the first day in the syllabus. Just attend class, take notes, and listen. You learn a lot. One paper based on a movie. But of course, study for midterms and the final because a lot of what he goes over is covered.
DO NOT BUY THE BOOK!!! You don't need the book just go to the that bookmark on Eastern and buy his notes they are only $2.50. He is a very nice professor who knows his stuff. Go to his class because attendence does count. Also try to go to his office hours because he does help and he likes it when students go to office hrs. Study & u will get an A.
1 midterm, 1 final. questions are given on syllabus. 1paper. 10 pts for attendance. offer 10 points for extra credit. He is loud! btw never try to cheat in his class! His eyes are on you. but over all its an easy class
Mid-term and Final and mini paper. Had him for a Sat. Morning class. Loud guy but at least I stayed awake. I didn't buy the textbook or the study notes from the bookstore, just paid attention. As long as you study (questions and terms are on the syllabus) you should be fine. Received a B.
He talks a lot. Midterm requires a lot of writing. Final requires a lot of writing. He gives you a list of topics to prepare for and he picks a few of them. Write A LOT for those topics. There is also a book report and extra credit. Got a C for the midterm, Aced the Final.
Prof. Donovan is a nice guy. He is loud and clear. Although the class is boring, he encourages participation. 1 midterm, 1 final, 1 book report, and extra credit. Everything you need to know is in the syllabus included what will be on the midterm and final! Study that from day 1! attendance is mandatory. I would recommend him! Good teacher
good teacher. attend class everyday, you don't really need to take notes. don't buy the book you don't need it. the midterm and final are easy. exactly what it says on the syllabus is what is going to be on there. I didn't do the book report, I did okay on midterm and okay on final and I still passed with a C+ :)
Very funny. Always takes attendance. A few videos played in class. Very loud & clear, hard to fall asleep. MT&Final EXACTLY provided on the syllabus so dont lose it. Extra credit is given and really easy to do. I recommend taking him!
Class was so easy. Study guides were very helpful. He gives extra credit and he isn't very strict with deadlines.
Donovan is a cool teacher but when it comes to exam, there's a lot to memorize. However he gives a study guide for both midterm and finals on the first day of school so start studying on the first day. He could be a tough grader when it comes to specific information. 10 points extra credit which can really secure your grades.
Really easy the good thing is that since day one you have what the midterm and final will be and he gives the outlines for the essay questions copy them as he has them and thats what you have to write he does give the outlines at the ends and does not tell you when so going to class in mandatory and do the extra credit two museums and one film.
I do and don't recommend this class I do because even though he lists that we need a book we never use it he lectures he has his notes at the book mart to buy for 2.50. However, he does gives the information that will be on the midterm and final on the syllabus but it is way to much to remember. He can also be very rude at times.
Professor Donovan is a great professor. His lectures are very precise and clear. He also gives his students the opportunity to ask questionscomments and willing to clarify the topic. When it comes to grading, he's fair and not tough like other hist profs. He gives 10 extra credit points to help boosts your grade. 2 exams (midfinal) Easy AB !!!
you have to memorize everything on the syllabus he gives you essay questions that might be on the test so u have to memorize like 3 out of 4 esaay questions to get even one right u watch a movie that u have to write a reaction paper on theres no multiple choice test u have to write everything down which makes it harder to pass
I don't know why everyone says his class is easy to pass. There is ALOT to memorize for tests. Yes, he does give you the possible questions beforehand but only some will be on the tests, but since we don't know which ones we have to memorize all of them. (there is about 30 to memorize). He's a tough grader, expects lots and specific detail.
DO NOT TAKE HISTORY WITH THIS PROFESSOR! He's a tough grader. He does offer 10 points extra credit and gives you the study guides for the midterm and final. Those study guides are on the syllabus. However, it is far too much to memorize. He knows his history extremely well, but I regret staying in this class.
Passionate about history but definitely a tough instructor. MidTerm and Final study guide provided in syllabus in the beginning of quarter with a lot of memorization. Tough grader, Expects VERY detailed answers and plus the whole concept of the study guides are nonsense. Stressful class overall, would NOT reccomend.
10%-ATTENDANCE 10%- 3 class video notes 10%-23 page essay 30%-midterm 40%-final He gives you a study guide in the beginning of the class that has a list of about 20 vocab words and about 3 essay topics in the midterm he will choose 10 out of the 20 words and you will only need to define 4 of them and do one essay from the one he chooses
Mr. Donovan is your typical wise and adorably dorky older professor. He's very well-spirited and eager to help with anything. The lectures are fast paced so no time is wasted time (in fact, don't leave class for the bathroom or you might miss something!). He says "Gee" and "Oh gosh" a lot and I found that to be cute/ humorous. 10/10.
he gives you what is on the midterm & final the first day of class. He also does outlines for the essays to help. he literally gives you everything to pass. go to his office hours he's super helpful. don't understand how people fail this class its so easy.
Mr. Donovan is a really nice professor. If you go to him, he is willing to help and very understanding. He gives the midterm/final questions the first day of class. There is a lot to memorize, but if you start to do it from the beginning, you'll get an A on both for sure. He even gives outlines for the questions! Just have to apply yourself!
Professor Donovan is a great teacher! His lectures are long and a bit boring, but they are super informational and crucial to passing. Book is not essential, but if you skip class, just get the book. 1 midterm, 1 final, 1 paper. Office Hours passing class. He helps you on your responses to the terms (syllabus includes finals and midterm terms)
Loved this class! He gives you everything you need to pass the midterm and final. If you have any questions, or need feedback for any essays then he will gladly help. Highly recommended.
I highly recommend taking this class, He gives you everything you need in order to pass the class. 1 midterm 1 final and 1 paper. The exams are free response and essay format but its really easy just pay attention and you will be fine. Study guide provided. If you do not pass the midterm he gives you a passing grade if you pass the final.
Totally not recommend for international students. Your English writing need to be authentic enough to pass the class.
He is so horrible, the worst kind of professor in CSULA. Tough grader. We can tell he knows he stuff really well, but not a kind of instructor that knows how to teach. Most of the classmates are confusing about the way he grades. He is super picky with English writing which seems really unnecessary. You grade really depends on the way you write.
Every lecture we took notes except the day of the Midterm and the Final. We only had one assignment, and it was a book report on a book, which we had the whole semester to do. Just show up to class, its easy to want to slack off, but pay attention because he teaches everything you need for the tests. He takes attendance and it counts.
FALL 2017: My suggestions is to read his syllabus, because an A is achievable! He has extra credit opportunity for example 3 movie reflection/summary, and 1 museum thoughts/ summary. His lecture are sometimes heavy, and my suggestion is to record him with your iphone. He has 1 midterm,1 final, and a 2-3 page book report about animal farm.
His lectures were very long and boring. He also was unorganized when it came to grading midterms and papers. He lost my midterm paper and I had to retake it again which was annoying. He posts his notes online and offers extra credit opportunities which is to watch 3 movies and write about it. He is a great teacher though and talks very loud.
I love this class, you should definitely take it.
His lectures are very boring and it is very easy to skip class but what we get tested on is based on his lectures, so it is important to know what he is talking about. He offers a lot of extra credit opportunities which is great because you can catch up if you don't do good on tests. The only homework he assigned was writing an essay on a movie.
very good professor, feel free to ask him any question, easy to skip lectures, I fell to sleep in his lectures, no homework, not a though grader, very funny person.
Lectures everyday.
Hes very friendly, lecture heavy as it will be a lecture almost everyday. Its not a hard class and the tests arent hard if you went to class and listen
He's a super accommodating professor. He basically lectures the entire time and it's easy the blank out but it's a doable class. He has one paper based off a movie he shows in class and 2 midterms and 1 final. They all have the same basic layout and require an essay and short answer response. He also lets you know what will be on the exams.
He is cool. The whole class is just powerpoint slides. He seems very caring and understanding of his students. Attendance is mandatory since it is graded.
I liked his class overall, the first week of class I didn't know what to make out of him but he grew on me, he wants people to participate on lectures but he doesn't mind if you don't. He's funny at times and his midterms and finals are easy, just be ready to take notes on what he says not the board.
This class is easy! Show up and just attend the lectures, youll be fine. The format for the midterm & final is just definitions and essay. He will choose 10 words from the study guide and you will choose 4 or 5 of them to define. As for the essay portion, there will be 3 or 4 possible essay questions in the study guide
Doesn't teach. That's all I have to say. You're on your own. Even if you go to class, his lectures are the same as his PowerPoints and it's still not enough. Good luck teaching yourself. If you don't like history pick another professor you'll learn from.
Easy workload and replied to emails quickly. He is caring of his students and would host optional zoom meetings to make sure students are understanding the material or if we had any questions. Props to him for teaching our class efficiently while caring for his elderly mother as well during this pandemic. Great professor, I recommend him!
His assignments and essays are straightforward and easy but you submit your stuff through email and turnitin not on canvas. He provides the lectures and an outline on the lectures on canvas, read the outlines and youll pass his class.
Took the course during distance learning and depending on your learning style, the course will either pass or fail you. I passed without attending classes and watching the recorded zoom lectures that fit the criteria for an essay I was writing.
To satisfy his assignments, you'd have to watch his recorded lectures (or attend the class). It's a self-taught class, really. Listen to a lecture, read a PowerPoint. The rules of his few assignments are self-explanatory, but he DOES NOT give CLEAR guidelines as to HOW he wants things. You can get a certain grade on an essay and wonder why.
Don't come into this class expecting to learn anything. U are basically on ur own the whole semester. Every zoom was just a boring powerpoint lecture in which u learned nothing from. I stopped attending meetings half way & it never affected my grade. Also u are only graded off 4 things. 1st&2nd quiz, paper and final. One bad grade & ur done for.
attendance mandatory, you get points for it, only three assignments in the grade book (midterm, paper, final) he is a tough grader and very lecture heavy. extra credit oppurnity each EC essay is two points and the limit is 5. I would of rated him a 1 but he is really caring and nice.
Easy A. It is a self taught but it is easy trust me! There is 4 assignment in total l: 1 midterm (2 parts), 2 writing assignments, and a final. Reminder: History is history so its easy to look for :)!
I want to start off by saying that I most definitely failed this class although the grade hasn't been finalized. I'm just here to let people know that Donovan truly is a great professor and does take passion in what he does. I had many unfortunate events occur to me this semester hence why I failed this class if you don't show up you will be lost.
I recommend his class, he's passionate about what he does and doesn't do anything extra. Attend his class, take notes, and be respectful. There's a midterm and final and you can use your notes, also an essay but its easy, 5P and he gives feedback on rough draft. He's a nice guy and tries his best to work with his students.
You will be graded by attendance, midterm, essay, and final. He is a very harsh grader, be sure to not use any outside sources when studying and base it all off your notes from class. He does allow an index card to be used for exams however. Overall, he is very nice professor, the class is just difficult for a lower GE class.
This professor is a tough grader and gives most students the same grade. I received a 39/40 on the terms portion of a midterm, but my overall grade became a 69% because he marked me heavily on my essay portion. Attendance is mandatory, unfortunately, and there are only 4 things in the grade book so you're out of luck if you do badly on something.
He's extremely passionate about what he teaches, and is a big reason why I started getting into history (bio major btw). There are not many graded assignments. I recommend studying 14 out the 20 terms he gives out; this ensures at least 4 of the ones you studied will be on the exam, and use the flashcard for essay. Amazing professor overall.
Professor Donovan is cool, although his class is a little unclear. I suggest reading everything on your own. I also recommend his suggestions for the tests. Be ready to take notes because he is a little tough grader. Other than that, he is very understanding. Attendance is graded.
One of my favorite history teachers in recent memory. I didn't know what to make of the class on the first day but as I continued to go, it was a genuinely chill class that was lecture and attendance heavy, but all of the time in class is important as it is chock full of info. Professor is very funny and nice, I recommend if you need this class.
As a Deaf Person with no Office of Disability accommodations, videos posted in Canvas have NO closed caption, so it's difficult to hear the professor saying. I already fail this spring semester's first year with no learning in an in-person class. He is very tough grade; it's so hard because you need to learn everything lies to lectures.
I had him for another class and had him for Fall 2023 but I felt like this class was the most interesting since it was about California. He implemented movies along with his lectures. There is a paper on a movie. But the essay midterm and essay final exam are in person, so bring a blue book. He was also understanding when I had issues going on.
I had him for Fall'23. Prof Donovan is a pretty chill old guy and so is his class too. His class consists of lectures, movies, and documentaries. Attendance is heavy so make sure you go cause besides loosing grade points, you also missing out on info for the midterm and final essay questions that will be on the blue book.
Professor Donovan is passionate about the material and tries to engage students, but the class can be tricky to navigate. Attending lectures, taking notes, and using unstuck study for exam prep are key. Overall, a solid GE class if you put in the work.
