He was the best prof I've had...a good teacher and super cool!!

very commical.

He sweats a lot, but is splendid. Makes me laugh at least once a class!
talks about drinking and his issues with his family every class, tries to hard
The only prof whose lectures are jokes, with the punchline at the end of class.
his class made me change my major to history! he's that good!
I've never laughed like that in a class before. Never missed a lecture!!!!
The best prof I've ever had. Funny and sexy too;)
Amazing! So funny and gives you time to write down notes
I actually wanna come to this class! He's great
His classes are the best! By far the most interesting class I've taken.
so funny, loves to drink, and you get to hear all about it
Very engaging, VERY Tasteful!
amazing how little i learned when compared to other profs
Best teacher I've ever had, you laugh ever lecture and its easy to retain info
you can not go to uvic without having this man. best simpson quotes
Best prof ever!! Well worth taking.
Best Prof Ever! Never missed a class. Can't wait to take another class with him!
weird and funny. gives papers to TA to mark. Great lectures!
The best course I ever took, every class was storytime, best, funniest lectures
You can tell he enjoys teaching his lectures, no listening or attendance trouble
BEST PROF AT UVIC, all of his courses are great, also the FUNNIEST PROF at UVIC
easy christmas exam, didnt study a bit
Just like the Simpsons: Makes fun of everyone equally. Makes dull material interesting.
Funny as hell. Brilliant antidotal history. Never missed a class
Awsome presentations
Great lecturer once you get over the weird voice cadence! I took 220 class I am interested to see how hard a 400 level course is. Overall though a great teacher.
Refreshingly vulgar, entertaining lecturer. I didn't learn a thing, except to hate the French. Those garlic-chewing, wine-swilling, cheese-eating surrender monkies!
Very good class lectures, but very unequal marking from one term to the next. Not avaliable often outside of class time.
Funniest prof I have ever had; opposite of politically correct. Course was extremely interesting.
He has always been my favorite Uvic history prof. Take it if you want a laugh and the term divided into 50% essay and 50% final. Just study half of your notes and you're golden as he usually gives 9 topics to choose from.
BEST prof!!
this guy is the funniest prof, never missed a lecture!! made history of england very interesting
Very entertaining.
he is such a wonderfull lecturer, that he has become lazy.He is not helpfull with papers, and there is no time to get to know his marking style, since everything is marked by his hard ass T.A's. His T.A's are pompous and try to intimidate students.
You can always tell a good teacher who can use the words rectum and organ extracting spear in the same historical context.
Duder is a very entertaining prof who knows how to appeal to the mass study body. never laughed so hard but enjoyed the material
Great lecturer, but very unhelpful and unapproachable re. papers. TA's mark all work. Papers returned a week before final exam and account for 50% of grade.
I never missed a class. He is hilarious and I learned a lot more than I thought I would. This guy has a gift for taking anything in history (even if it seems dull to some) and making it interesting!
Extremely funny guy, but lazy. Exact same lectures and rude humor for every class he teaches. Does not care about his job and really unhelpful on his paper assignment, but you can re-write. I'd take him again, because he is predictable.
Great lectures, but same old same old, extremely unhelpful and very uninvolved in research essays - absolutely no help at all. Typical jaded academic.
super good teacher
What a great proff! Take him NOW!
An extremly amusing prof, his lectures are the high point of the day. Textbooks are not necessary with him, he is able to give you all the information in class. all the classes arranged the same, one essay and one exam
Everyone should have at least one class with Dr. Duder during their time at UVic. His 'Monty Python' style sarcasm is the best way to tackle history. African exploration made possible through 'Gin + Tonic'. Colonial domination possible through "essence of machine gun". Go Duder!!
He is super awesome lecturer, and I always loved to go to class. He's very funny, but sometimes his humour is pretty borderline offensive and prejudiced. He also seems a bit lazy, but really, it was a totally awesome class and he really made it come alive.
Awesome lecturer, with a dry and fabulous approach to humourous history.
great, witty lectures chock full of fascinating information. i actually regretted missing a couple of classes. doesn't expect too much: one essay, one exam. the exam questions were very broad and easy to answer, some good lecture notes will help quite a bit. course books were worth the money.
Great lecturer. Wish I'd taken classes with him before my final term; would recommend him to anyone. Made a potentially boring subject interesting to learn. Marks fairly and the exam is pretty easy if you go to every class and pay attention.
Keeps regurgitating same old lectures, totally unhelpful when with research papers, totally uninterested in students.
Take this class with Duder! He brings a humor to history that makes you excited about listening to his lectures. I really liked his class. Any prof that teaches you how to ask for beer in swahili is worth it!
Duder made this class fascinating and funny. I enjoyed every single lecture and am taking another class of his next semester. Can't wait! If you can, take anything with Duder. He makes the most boring subject thoroughly entertaining and thought-provoking.
-great lectures! you never get bored! not very helpful though with assignments or feedback. Take his classes though! You will never be bored!
take anything you can with duder but dont buy the textbooks unless you think you absolutely must - a waste of money. just dont miss a single lecture (not that you would want to - they are awesome). taken with a sense of humour, one of my favourite profs. will take another history class just to get him. genius when it comes to historical facts.
Duder is VERY funny and I regret having discovered him so late. True, some of the negative points mentioned below are accurate, but he's easily the most entertaining lecturer I came across during my degree. Too many good gags to mention, but a favourite was him showing us pictures of his baby daughter before course evaluations. Great anecdotes.
Best lecturer you ever had, and contrary to what everyone else says, he's very helpful with term papers. he provides you with the topics, and if you go to his office (if he's not there, he's having a smoke and will be back in 5) he'll outline exactly what you need to do. certainly has become comfortable in his job though. great simpsons jokes!
Helpful and nice with essays, voice will NOT put you to sleep.. hah. gave ranges on essay marks though, which was annoying. great lecturer, interesting. Funny, some jokes funnier than others.. sometimes seems to try a little too hard to relate to 'college students,' joking about alcoholism and binge drinking which gets a little old/irritating
"Good morning, little flock" is how he begins EVERY lecture EVERY day. One of the funniest professors I have ever had due to his extremely dry, sarcastic sense of humor. History of Africa is the most interesting course I have taken so far, and he makes it even better. I strongly recommend him as a teacher, and I think his **** jokes are funny
In my opinion Duder is an awesome prof. I kind of expected a higher grade than a 'B' however I thoroughly enjoyed his classes. The subject was very interesting. He's both comical and serious and especially all knowing about his subject "British Africa." Being a French student, it would seem he's a little biased towards "French Africa," but meh!
Amazing Prof! He's witty and hilarious. He really knows his stuff, and he's not too hard of a marker. You HAVE to attend class though, and be prepared to take a lot of notes. Luckily African History is fascinating, so it's okay!
best prof ever, HILARIOUS offensive jokes often, history BORING,,, DUDER funny as hell
Agree with other comments- funny, great, interesting lectures. HOWEVER, he does not give detailed expectations for papers and exams. Then gives bad grades if you don't write what he thinks is important. Try asking for clarity but don't expect any reasonable response. He is extremely awkward and unhelpful.
Dr. Duder is one of the best lecturers I've ever had; hilarious, engaging material that he makes funny with a dark sense of humour. You're never bored in his class! However, watch out for his assignments: he doesn't provide much guidance but still expects you to match hs ite spcific idea of what he wants. Overall, awesome prof -- take him for sure!
He's awesome! His lectures are awesome; they're "chalk and talk" so be very ready to take notes very quickly because he goes through quite a bit of content. His 3,000 word essay was not totally appreciated, but still do able. I would take a class with him in a heart beat, he's totally amazing!
I had Dr. Duder for History of South Africa. Like a previous poster commented, it's "chalk and talk"... Come to class and you have to have an interest in the subject cause you'll be writing three pages of notes per class. Don't buy the textbooks. They are not needed!
Probably the most entertaining prof in the history department. It's true that the textbooks are not needed, but if you like history read them as they are not dull academic books like what most professors assign, they are written more like novels.
His lectures are very interesting, but they are all oral. He does not supply notes, so attendance in mandatory. This course requires a lot of work - lots of reading (2 novels and a text), a large paper and an essay style final. He has a dark sense of humor, but it can be really funny and refreshing. Be prepared to work hard, but very interesting.
Duder is my favorite uvic prof. I've taken all of his offered courses. His lectures are like listening to a riveting story and all key terms and dates he writes on the chalk board. All you have to do is attend class, write a straightforward 12 page paper on a person/event and a final exam (which offers several essay options). Texts not necessary.
AMAZING professor! I have recommended his classes to EVERYONE! Interesting lecturer, easy to follow. Very interesting content. Fair/easy marker. Take any of his courses! You will not regret it.
"Morning little flock" is how he greets the class, and brings a smile to everyone each time. He is amazing, really clear and cynical, and really illuminates the complex relationships within South Africa. One essay. One test. That's it. What a breath of fresh air!
I have taken ALL of the classes that he offers. Best history lecturer at uvic for sure. Lectures are always entertaining and he always ends on time/early. texts not needed ever. grade = 50% essay 50% final. for the final you can choose 2/8ish essay questions to answer. I would take ANY class he taught
Professor Duder is the most entertaining prof I've had so far; he extensively knows African history. He's quite sarcastic and witty, and if you get this sense of humor you'll love it. If not, you might get offended. He means well, and is very approachable during office hours. Just make sure to study hard and give a bunch of facts for tests.
A reliable instructorfair marking, interesting lectures, and provides help to students. On the whole, I'd say Dr. Duder is great prof. One quibble is that a few of his lectures are fairly old and somewhat "memorized," but others are very interesting. For 372 he used a 25X4 marking scheme, which seemed to underweight the 3,000 word essay.
Great prof with an excellent sense of humour. The one class I am genuinely excited to go to!
Best prof I have had at UVic. Definitely a class to look forward to. A very quotable and funny man, someone I strive to be like one day.
Great teacher, really funny! A teacher that you could look forward to.
Sad to see him retire, but he was great!
Subject matter was very interesting and he taught it well, but in retrospect he brought a very colonial lens to African history. He also failed to stand up for a Black student after a white student made an incredibly racist and misogynistic remark towards her. He lost my respect after that.
One of the best University professors I've ever had. He had deep convictions about the preservation of history and the teaching of historical truth. He was deeply critical of modern movements that wanted to undermine or put a political narrative on British and Canadian History.
