this guy is funny! he read someones notes from another class, it was hilarious! very good teacher. if you ACE both test, you don't have ta take the final!!! 80% is an A!!!!
He is a wonderful teacher. I had a him when I was freshman at CSUN. he has take home practice exams, practice those exams they are helpful.
He lost total control of the class and almost started crying when we asked why he gave extra credit for students who colored their graphs! (This isn't kindergarten!) Incredibly imature and stupid.
He was more than fair and gave abundantly of his time to help anyone who wanted to learn. He cares about his students understanding of the subject matter and will continue to clarify until you understand.
This class was super tough. Prof. Dye would just go into off topic discussions about his cube puzzles and not explain the course material sufficiently. However, he is a super easy grader and not much work in the class... still I wish I would've understood more in this class because it was tough
hard class but he keeps it interest with good explainations and off the topic jokes. fun class, fun prof, just gotta put some study time in to read the book to understand.
This class was one of the hardest classes I have taken here at CSUN. The professor had, somewhat funny, off-the wall jokes, and the calculator he requires was of a ridiculious price. I highly recommend that you show up to EVERY class, study EVERYDAY, and form a good study group to pass this class.
If you need statistics but HATE math and are horrible in it, take this teacher. The material isn't easy but he is sooooo leinent and curves ridiculously!!!!!! Just go to every class b/c he takes roll seriously and do all the HW. If you do that you're good to go! I HIGHLY recommend him!!!!!!
horrible grading; no sense of partial credit; takes attendace, if you miss at least two class subtracts point, if you come to all of it no credit anyway; makes confusing material more confusing; if you wanna learn or even dreamin of passing th class without white hair forget about it
By far one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. The calculator is a ridiculous price.. the bool alone was expensive. Although, the teacher is overall helpfull and has Senfeld-esque off-the-wall jokes that in py oppinion- is funny.
Horrible professor. Gave extra credit for coloring graphs instead of concentrating on theories or good work.
Nice guy. Lots of homework, tests kind of hard, but he explains everything clearly. Not the most exciting teacher, but solid.
Negative: Tendency to inform extraneous information (you'll know what I mean). Ridiculous price of calculator; can be direct and blunt (you'll know what I mean). Postives:DON'T need to buy book if you have access to problems. Sometimes humorous; tries to reduce class time often. Exams are straight-forward! Mixed: winks a lot. Conclusion: Good Luck!
He gives out previous semester tests, so you know what to study. There is a lots of homework and INSTANT INSANITY program for 40 cubes. I believe he is better choice compare to Henderson. He curves and as long as you get 50% of the material, he lets you pass. It is a LOT OF WORK.
2 midterms which are 90% exactly from the practice test. Seriously, word 4 word and number 4 number. Pass those 2 with an average of 75% and ur done with an A, no final. If u cant average 75% must take the final which is the two midterms put together. 5 group homeworks. Each person does 4 problems and you're done. All calculator no actual math. EZ
Not the best, you really dont learn much. Buy the calc, and just learn how to use it. 2 midterms are easy as long as you learn the practice tests. Not too much HW if u get a group and share the problems. He curves, and with an avg. of 75% u pass the class w/ and A and NO FINAL! I recommend him!!
Make sure you attend all of the lectures or else you WILL be lost. Also be prepared to spend the $175 on the calc. Otherwise just study it's difficult curriculum and he explains it very well, he's one of the best
Gives bonus points for coloring in the graphs and other stupid NON-ACADEMIC stuff. Extremely egotistical - and very weak of character.
He is a great professor i was worried about taking statistics because of things friends said, but he is great. His desire is to see you learn and he makes it possible to understand a very complicated subject. He is a fantastic professor. The class is based off the TI89 calc.
Real nice professor. The only catch to his class is buying the expensive calculator. Show up, do the homework and pass his tests and you'll get a REAL GOOD grade
this is and easy class. Buy the calc (even though it's expensive) and go to all the classes. He posts the notes online and the tests are based of practice tests. highly recommended. and he's funny. Easy A. Do all the hw and learn how to use the calc and you'll be fine. :)
You are too busy learning to use the EXPENSIVE calculator! If you take another stats related class -you will be screwed, you won't know how to think without the calculator! It sucks!
exceptional teacher. those who say otherwise are using him as a scapegoat for their inability to grasp the material. he is understanding, fair, and methodical when covering information in class, as well as assigning grades. one of the most enjoyable professors i've ever come into contact with. definitely an excellent choice to take!
He is not a bad person, but this class really does suck. If you are familiar with the TI-89 Titanium this is the class for you, otherwise...RUN!
Makes simple ideas more complicated, so you have to work hard. However, you know what to expect from tests. Program the heck out of your calculator !
He is the buffest math professor I have ever seen. He is also the most friendly. Overall, I love his teaching style. I never found him confusing. The material is tough, but if you're willing to take the time to ask questions (during office hours or in class), you'll do fine. Be prepared to spend a lot of time on this class.
Can anyone make the Master Method more confusing? Wow, I was shocked because he seems insecure in his own teachings, constantly correcting himself. No partial credit on exams, just put the answer. Final should've had 2 problems from previous exams, but no. He isn't cut out for teaching, probably a better researcher. Good luck passing this class.
I swear to god there are so many whiners at CSUN. Dr. Dye gives you supplementary excercises before each exam and selects directly from them for the exams (including the final). How much more straight forward do you want your exams? He makes very complicated topics very approachable. Excellent Professor. Would take again in a heart beat.
Dont get me wrong this class u have 2 study 4 but Dye is so good about helping his students. He gives several practice exams and he doesn't mind answering questions. If you do well on the first two exams you do not have to take the final which is pretty cool. The only thing is u have 2 buy the calculator which is $150 bucks,Great guy
this is a hard class. u really have to study alot by urself to do well in this class. prof dye always tried his best to clarify and makes things easier but still there are always confusion left over that u need to take care off. 2 midterms, 1 pgming proj, 5 h/w's, 10% attend, & final will keep u tight through out the semester. subject book is sucks
I talked to him and immediately he judged me and was rude and discourteous. He does not care about his students, and uses his upper hand as a teacher to degrade. Do not take this class.
This class is terrible. Please save your nerves. Take whoever but not him.
Dye genuinely wants his students to succeed, but YOU HAVE TO DO THE WORK. There is a lot of homework, but you can do it in groups. The practice tests are good guides, but you can't rely just on them. His grading scale is generous. I am math phobic and was able to score high enough between both tests (80 average between the 2) to skip the final.
This class is hard but he is wonderful. He does everything to help his students. Professor Dye is a very good person and wonderful teacher. Don't afraid of calculator TI -89, which you are going to use. Just follow his instructions and his lectures. At the beginning I had the calculator phobia but later on it's gone. I like him a lot.
this class is very hard but he is a very good teacher and a great person. take him and learn a lot.

class is hard but don't panic, pay attention . he is really wonderful teacher and a great guy, believe me if you would pay attention and do your work, you will pass. he is really good.
the subject itself is not ez but the teacher lays it down! I love Dye! Hes smart and hot! good reason to show up to stats class!he made learning so much fun TAKE him ull love him!
Class material is hard to grasp. If you pay attention to his notes and review midterms for the final then it's pretty easy. Make sure you come to class, because attendance is mandatory and will affect your grade. The only problem with his style of teaching is that he went too fast through the material.
He is an extremely nice guy and passionate about math. However, he goes off topic a lot and does not teach what is in the homework.
just go to every class. pay attention. do the homework. you do have to buy an expensive calculator. he gives you quizzes that he has given before and lets you study off them. the problems are the same he changes the numbers or rewords them up a bit. you dont have to take the final if you get good grades on the midterm. Awesome professor!take him!
Dye is awesome and always willing to help you out. He even offered to go over my final with me almost a semester later! Do all your work, ask questions, learn your calculator, and you'll be just fine. He makes stats painless and simple - even my genius father was shocked I passed ststs the first time (he didn't).
Honestly: Dye is a great guy, very passionate and asthetically caring. All classwork and some HW problems are asked on the test, make sure you save them on that $$$ calculator. Does go off topic a lot but it makes class content a little easier to take in. I would recommend him. If you don't understand material, ASK! Learn all calculator functions!!
His teaching skills are below poor. He is very dull and boring. I felt like he was learning the topic as he was teaching it to us. Very hard grader.
ok where do i start......well if you have any interest in learning stats....dont take him! if your interest are learnig about weightlifting and any unrelated subject then your in for a treat. all he does is talk about stats for about 7 minutes then the rest of the period your gonna feel like your at a bad stand up comedy show.
Avoid this guy, he's a bad professor, he starts explaining a problem, adn then starts up with lame jokes, He's been teaching for a while, but i feel he's not well prepared at all. And he's always saying go see a tutor, all the time, please explain to me why I would need a tutor If he was doing his part? DONT TAKE HIM, TRUST ME!!!!!!!!!
He is more difficult than he may seem at first, but he is very helpful and really cares about students doing well. He does require an expensive calculator, but all in all, I would recommend him.
He is a very nice, approachable guy who cares about his students. BUT-If he asks if u want to take a 15 min break in the middle or cut the class 15 min short, just TAKE the break. It LITERALLY takes 30 min 2 go over a problem that would take 5 min if he didn't get SO sidetracked. & since he still has more lesson, u end up staying to the end anyway
Do not take him!!!!! Yes he may come off as a nice guy but you will not learn anything from him. Every person I know thats taken him, including myself has failed. He requires an expensive calculator that is extremly hard to use and he does not explain the math well at all. Do not take!!!
He offered extra credit for students who colored in the distributions under their graphs but didn't tell the entire class - only select students. Hell, I knew that this was arts and crafts, I would have signed up for a different prof.
This professor is awesome. He responds to his email very quicky. He expains very well, if people make an attempt to listen. The topic is not that hard and he great at what he does. Totally recommend.
I did not learn anything in his class, the expensive calculator that he makes you buy does all the work. He did give extra credit, but it was kinda computer programing,. Hello, this is stats! The ppl who got it paid for it! take some else. Don't waste your time listening to his pathetic jokes, and find someone that doesnt make exuses to teach less
This class is a joke. He talks about anime way too much, and doesn't focus on the task at hand. I ended with a D+ after so many hours studying, it was ridiculous. I retook it with Professor Onzol and passed with an A. PS. Buying the TI-89 Titanium was a complete and utter joke. BEWARE, BEWARE, BEWARE.
Hotty! Hotty! Hotty! Gives lots of help if you want it. Best to be serious about the learning process. Expect to spend lots of time on the course material. I would take him again!;)
Fun teacher, Tend's to reuse material from advanced classes. Hopefully he does not curve to the extent a 30% in the class is passing. If it is so, i wonder if my degree will be degraded by everyone else...
A very poor professor. He is very intelligent and knows math well however he is incapable of teaching it to people who do not already EXCEL at math. Expect to rack your brain in his class if you are not a math wiz by nature, he's very unclear, and if you are not a math wiz he will look down at you and mock you for it. Smart man, bad teacher.
In the online form of this the professor is not very helpful. Just read the notes and the book.
I would recommend this class..but take STATS with this professor ONLINE..you wont regret it and you will pass the class?trust me..im not the best math person in the world and I got a B out of the class..but if I would have tried I know i would have gotten an A..you have plenty of time to complete your quizzes and tests and homework..but yah if ur g
Def. take this class online?like the person said below..u wont regret it..i am not the best math person and I managed to get a B+ in the class and I only took it once?STATS is a hard subject and if you take him online you will pass the first time and with a good grade?I would recommend study groups that helps a lot..the down side is that he doesn?t
A *wink* to the genius who gets it
Great professor. I took his class online. If you improve, he will give u a better grade. I did horrible on quizzes but did well on final so he gave me an A. 5 hw packets about 20 problem each, 10 quizzes, 3 tests
Take the professor online. Its an easy A/B. The final is worth 30%, so don't freak out if your grade looks like a D most of the time. With his grading curve, you'll probably still be able to get an A or a B. Keep in mind that he reuses a LOT of questions from the book and WebCT notes on his quizzes and exams, so just keep weeding through his notes
I really like the guy, but this class was the hardest class I've ever taken, and having him as a professor didn't help at all. I spent more effort in this class than all my other classes combined and still hardly passed. I've never failed a class in my life, but never got this close. This is your biggest obstical to overcome if you're a CS major.
Very hard subject, but really generous curve. Take it online.
Friendly professor who is willing to give you some pointers and extra credit if you participate in the discussion forums online for the online class. The overall course isn't pleasant, but math never is; an "A" is quite possible, especially if you do well on the exams and average on the quizzes.
He clearly does not know the material well enough to teach it. Furthermore, he does not grade fairly. To pass, look at back exams. Ignore his lecture. This is a very easy subject made very difficult by a passive aggressive, under qualified, unfair grader.
DO NOT TAKE THE ONLINE CLASS
If you aren't good at math, take this class online. Even though you need to teach yourself, the material isn't difficult. Just make sure that you are completing everything on time and print out all of your hmwk, pre quizzes and quizzes to use for the exams. Some of the questions are the same. It's a lot of printing but it's worth it.
If you need help with Math DO NOT TAKE this class.Absentee prof. If you have ?s ur referred back to class for input (they would know?)or tutoring (very crowded but they try their best).Last 2 mos you hear nothing from him - not even good luck on final.
I received a C in the class when the guy sitting next to me, who scored a solid grade lower on each and every test received a B+. If you're a woman, do not be alone with him.
Plain and simple math is not my thing. Got a c in the class. Good online class though. The professor and his aides seem kinda rude but overall the class structure is good and glad I used the online textbook extensively for what I paid.
Plain and simple. If you're new to class, don't take this class. Professor takes this class as a "sidedish" in which he won't be any help at all; therefore, you'll spend hours on this class. You're just going to be getting an online stats program -confusing and with errors- and you're on your own. Online Tutors that are available are expensive.
This self-proclaimed monopoly of 482 knows as much about Algorithms as I know about the outdoors, which is nil since I had to spend most of my time deciphering his incoherent rants. I swear, in CSUN's journey to discover the fastest route downhill, this guy is Christopher Columbus.
I have talked to the Department Chair since this class was not well prepared. Like previous comments, he does not offer much help since he is always busy during office hours and the online program's tools can get very glitchy. Definately try not to take stats online, well with this prof. at least.
I had to complain to the department to pass this class. He was failing me for the same answers others were getting B's with. This guy grades based on how much he likes you. It's weird because I never said a bad word his way. In the end I learned nothing from this putz, but the awfulness of tenure.
useless rude profesor as well as his aids. the grading system for answers was off yet he never fixed it. he is not there to help so dont bother looking. basically u just take the class on your own and if u need help google it or ask someone. only good thing about this class is the convenience.
He starts the class with a disclaimer stating that this subject is harder than most math. This is incorrect. He makes it so with extremely partial grading and a poor grasp of the subject. Study back exams because he doesn't teach well.
So I took his stats class online and basically it is like there is no professor. He doesn't even do the grading himself, the system does. If you are good at math, take his online class because it is very organized. I actually forgot his name, thats how little we correspond with him.
This was a hard class. I would recommend getting the book early and reading it. It is not possible for the professor to cover everything, because there is so much to learn. Contrary to how most feel, I think John Dye is a great professor.
This is a hard class, maybe the hardest class in the CS major; it is also really important for getting a good tech job at top-notch companies. Professor Dye does a great job teaching it. Having taken his class, I managed to get a job at a world-renowned company. I had to talk algorithms during my interview and thanks to Dye, I knew what to say.
This is THE HARDEST class that you will face through your comp science major. Be prepared. With Dye, there is no room for slackers nor for lazy minds.Work hard and show that you are putting enough time to grasp the subject and the professor will encourage you. He is available during office hours so make sure you go there if you have questions.
This class is really hard, but if your a CS major, this is the class where you're going to be fine tuned in CS and algorithms, so you really need to know this. I would recommend going to the MIT website and watching the lectures related to the topic you're on, because this class is taught on the same level as MIT (which is really great thing).
Take this class for an easy A! I took this class online and found almost all the assignments online so I just copied and pasted the answers. You need a 55% for a C and a 75% for an A so if you cant pass this class you are an idiot! He is so easy! Only problem is he doesnt return emails, but who cares if you get to take an easy class!
Hey! if anyone reads this can you guys tell me more about how Math 140 is please I am taking it online because I dnt wana take it in class! I am okay in math! How are the tests or quizes or hw. Thank you guys!
Difficult subject, but he is more than willing to take the time to explain it -- ask if you don't understand! Attend class, download ALL his material from previous classes (moodle) and study the material and examples. Do read his notes and review ALL the work from previous semesters (yes I typed that twice on purpose). Ask for help, he is nice.
I didn't think I would like this class much going into it, but Prof. Dye is the man! He makes learning this subject interesting and fun. The class content so far is difficult but I seem to be getting the hang of it. The first test is coming up and he has done an excellent job preparing us for it.
I took his online class. The quizes and exams are the exact homework problems. It is easy A if you read the book and go for tutoring because it is really hard to ask Professor questions online. His curve is amazing))) I would recommend him who just want to get it off the way
Funny guy with lots of odd stories to tell. Teaching wise, he is a bit iffy. Prof Dye, knows his stuff there is no denying that, but often he is unclear in his lectures. Study all his old exams and you'll do fine. Only need 70% to get an A in the class.
Online course. The book doesn't do the best job of explaining the concepts. Emails are kinda vague so you will need to use other resources to learn the material. Take the pre & post tests and print them. Those questions make up most of the quizzes and exams. He takes off points if the answer is .001 off. He wants the exact number. Okay class.
Took it OL. It was easy! if u wanna get the class out of the way TAKE IT! doesnt teach. read book. SAVE EVERYTHING. pre n post test r most of the quizzes. Google helps a lot. make sure its the right answer thou. CURVE! 75-80% to have an A. easy class. jst be on top of the work. picky with fill the blank Qs. EASY CLASS. RECOMMEND. got an A!! :)
Dye is a nice individual but can not teach this course. If you really want to get a good understanding of probability take it with someone else. He assigns homework problems that he has not worked out himself so when you ask for help he can't help you. Refers to algorithms quite a bit, but doesn't realize most students aren't programmers.
Dye is ok as a teacher but he cannot teach this course. He gives homework taken from an algorithm text and not our textbook. He taught us to search google more than to do probability. Do not take him unless you're a computer science major!
Very Bad Professor. No Partial Credit. A Very Hard Grader. Not Recommended At All.
horrible teacher and unfair grader; starts solving a problem w/o enough details of what the problem is and quickly writes the final solution. does not cover all the materials on the test or homeworks. lecture notes are messy. No partial credit even if you did 99% of the problem correctly. my worst professor so far!
I am currently taking this class online and although it's stats, the professor and the textbook do a great job explaining things. Grades are posted up after every entry. Easy class to keep up with. Even though it's online, you always have help from students and the professor. I would recommend both the class and teacher.Just be careful rounding.
This class is NOT easy. Professor gets angry if you ask him a question and comes off as VERY arrogant. I'd advise you to take this class face to face if you want actual help from the professor. Also you can no longer take the final at home, it now has to take the test in a computer lab, so it'll probably be harder.
Would recommend.
Whatever you do, don't take this class! He takes a long time to respond to your question, extremely arrogant, gets extremely upset when you ask him a question, and he does his best to make you feel stupid when you ask him a question, his TAs do a better job at explaining than he does, I got an A in this class but he was useless, no help at all!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. he is very arrogant a jerk not helpful. I hated the entire class since day 1 and it was online. I say you don't take it trust someone who usually loves every professor DONT DO I
He takes a long time to respond to email which is pretty important when taking an online class. However if Statistics is a class you have already taken and failed I would recommend this class because he grades on a huge curve. As long as you can learn on your own and go to free tutoring on campus you should not have a problem passing the class.
This is a hard class, having the old exams to study off really helps out. The no partial credit will hurt you a lot so be careful there. Pick a good team and really put in the time for this class. This professor is WAY better than Toth so I will pick him every time. Just really care about this class. Probably the hardest math class ever.
Often deviates from the subject. Skips important information in the book and instead relies on an intuitive explanation (good for some people, not good enough for people who need both). This course relies a lot on self-study and there is a lot of material. Instead of teaching in detail, he teaches small chunks across several chapters leaving blanks
No partial credit, and he doesnt see how that is a big deal.its just so he can grade quicker.Focuses on lesser problems, like number of bst trees and median of numbers, and less focus on useful algorithm stuff.a lot of off subject rants.bad tests, more credit for correct guessed answer than a correct process with an error in somthing small.
Worst. A prime example of why tenure is broken. This professor is unfit to teach this course, simply looking at past failure rates and the number of people that are failing this class now. Your exams are 30% of your grade, homework 20%, and final 50%. He told us what to expect on the final, but put completely different questions. No partial credit.
Constantly gets off topic, lectures aren't always focused and get rushed near the end. Little partial credit. Will also say several items are going to be on an exam, but then doesnt include them. 2 exams @ 30%, 3 hw @ 20%, final is 50%.Too much focus on bst and probability. One mistake on the final costs a big chunk of your grade (usually 8-10q)
Wow. Just wow. Summer 2014s final was yesterday and we got owned. Professor Dye heartlessly gave an exam with the trickiest questions. Came in late and rushed us during the final minutes because the next class had to come in. Dye even posted a message on moodle saying the average was a 30 %! And ended it with "theres always next semester!" Horrible
As it currently stands this is the teacher that you should be taking if you want to pass MATH 482. This is not a calculus difficult class, its a somewhat exhaustive class. Still you should take anything he says with a grain of salt, and prepare to repeat this class if luck is not on your side. Bye.
Look at the back exams he said... It will help you with final he said...
Very disappointed with this professor. I rate him low because he is unclear with simple material. He is confusing and misleading, avoidant of simple explanations. Spends no time on complex subjects and misconstrues simple concepts as "difficult" or "hard." Please: spend time on the cases you will test on. Prepare students for your exams. Not great.
Very bad professor avoid him if you can
The professor skips a lot around the textbook leaving little to no time to catch up on necessary in-between material. No partial credit is ridiculous, so is his 50% final. Questions on final were not what he said they would be, and unrelated to class focus. Digresses with personal stories too often. Lot of material focus is not prominent in text.
have compared his class with many other online classes at CSUN, he is the hardest. You are not allowed to take anything with you for final exam not even the Z table which doesn't make sense since we had access to textbook, notes, during the semester, that's not the case in other classes. extremely hard
SUPER HARD class, I do not recommend on taking it unless you've taken stats before and understand it. There are 2 midterms you have to take at school with people watching you so you don't cheat, & one final. You take a lot of quizzes at home & have a lot of homework. He does have a cool grading curve but its still a hard class! do not take!!!!
It was bad enough I took it online, but the class has no help. You are on your own the whole semester.
What can i say, its dye, probably the hardest class you ever take. No homework, just lectures, no partial credit, midterm were take home this semester and people still got 50% on average. Told us there will be network problem on final, spend entire lecture going over it, never saw it on the final. Tells random stories and worships some guy Chris.
Study past exams and you should be fine. Helps you get an A if you try hard.
Moodle is helpful.
John seems like a genuinely funny and good person. However, lectures were almost always off-topic about gambling or John's vacation trips to Vegas and tests were made up of random questions from previous exams that were equivalent to the type of questions you would be asked in a Google programming interview. Passable class if luck is on your side.
Statistics is a hard class in general, so if you've never taken it before, I don't recommend taking it online. If you need help, he is always available and helpful in office hours. The class itself is very structured and he grades on a very generous curve! I would recommend him!
If you are not self-motivated then do not take this course. You have to teach yourself the material. Homework and open book quizzes for each chapter. 2 proctored midterms, one traditional final. Dye responds to questions posted online, but it's up to you to learn how to solve the problems. Do not take if you have a very busy schedule.
His homework assignments are impossible to figure out. He doesn't even know what he is talking about. When you ask him for help or clarification, he simply says I don't know this stuff, I need to look at my notes again. Try to avoid him and get into comp 486
Hardest Online Class EVER!!!
I took this class online so the only times I saw the professor was during the midterms and final. Statistics is going to be hard regardless of the professor so be prepared to STUDY! Since it's online there's a lot of homework and quizzes. If you have any questions email or meet him during his office hours. He's quite nice and will help you out.
It's not free A by default. As you all may know he is a really tough grader:rarely gives partial credits unless mistakes are really minor. But in his 320 class, your grade is base on 3 mid-terms and 1 finals., and if you get 75% or above A. Make sure you understand all the examples he shows in class and check csun emails a night or 2 before exams
As long as you pay attention in class and take notes on what he wants you to know, you will be 100% ready for the tests. Good grading scale, always there at office hours, and responds to emails. He enjoys teaching the subject and honestly tries to make it fun, enjoyable, and actually applicable to real life problems/jobs.
Essentially Dye is teaching you how to think instead of giving you a direct answer. He always pretends he doesn't remember stuff and needs help from class but in fact he is trying to make you think as hard as you can. Really cool guy overall. But you will get rekt pretty hard if you drop your guard in this class.
He is very nice guy and knowledgeable, I took math 482 on summer and it was fine for me and most of student in class
He tends to rabbit trail/jump around topics, so you'll need to make sure your notes are better organized than his lectures. However, if you do that, you'll find that he goes over everything he wants you to know in lecture. He makes many old exams available, and gives an overview of the questions on each exam, so there's never any surprises.
Either your right or wrong, gives no partial credit even if the steps are correct, but the final answer is wrong. He even told the entire class your either right or wrong, that we should know this! You have to teach yourself because he goes over easy problems in class, but his exams are hard! He will hurt your GPA! Final Exam is really tough!
I took his online stats class and it was hard because it was stats. online. not because of him. Whenever I did see him for midterms or the final he was really nice and genuinely wants to see his students succeed. 75% and up is an A which is very lenient
I really liked the professor, he always answered questions on the online forums. This class was hard because it's online and it can get confusing if you don't do a good reading of the chapter. The 2 midterms are online in a computer lab and are open book and the final is the common final on paper. You have 3 chances to do the homework.
Professor Dye is an amazing person and very approachable. There is a generous curve of 75+ ( A ) & 81+ (A+). Midterms weren't bad at all, 40 easy MC questions . Just do the chapter readings, know how to use a Ti-83/84 and you'll be set. GL
Very hard class. Very unorganized professor. beware.
Hes really nice only met him once since I had online course, answers emails right away, easy exams if you do the quizzes before the exams most of the questions are from there.
I really like this professor. Tests are very hard and stressful but he provides back exams and study guides. If you put your time in, you'll do fine. If you don't do fine, he offers extra credit to boost your grade. Take good notes in class. Much of the material is not in the textbook. Wants you to learn heuristically. Scattered lectures.
I took his online class which was of course hard because its stats but if you put in the work you will pass. The good thing is that his grading system is VERY curved you need at 75+ to pass with an A like whaaa but overall good teacher.
Professor Dye is the most unorganized professor I've ever taken. His lectures are hard to understand and he will constantly interrupt his own work to tell a random story about past students or his interactions with other math professors. Most of your learning will be done on your own by looking through past exams he gave on Canvas.
His lectures aren't the most organized lectures, but as long as you put in effort, you will pass with a good grade. He is very helpful during his office hours, so make sure to get help from him. He pretends like he doesn't know the answers, but what he's really trying to do is to make you work for it!
Professor Dye is such sweet and understanding man; it's very hard to come across professors like this. He is encouraging to all of the students to pass this class. Just like any other class, invest your time and you'll get what you want. Stats online requires double work since you are basically teaching yourself with Prof. Dye notes as guidance.
I took his online class, it was good but i mainly talked to his T.A which she was very nice and helpful. Really recommend going to talk to her for help in homework. He wasn't that bad, i just never had a talk with the professor lmao. oh super surprised i got a B since i missed Midterm 1.
Worst teacher for this subject. Lectures always go past the allotted time and they never fully cover a topic. He'll go over problems he's done before and tell you upfront that he doesn't know what he's doing. If you value your time and money, DO NOT take this guy by any means necessary. If you do take him, make sure he doesn't get side tracked.
Dye needs to retire or get fired. The class structure is a mess. His lectures suck big time. Makes everything so complicated to avoid cheating that he cant even properly solve the problems. No homework. Just assigns really difficult puzzle tests to solve that he does not prepare you for. Team based class so if your team is weak you fail. AVOID.
His scale seems amazing (70% is an A, 60% is an B), and all of the midterms and tests are group work. As long as you have a hard-working group, then you should be fine. However, his lectures are a mess, and sometimes what he is teaching is different than the textbook material, so be careful for that when taking him.
He is the worst professor in Math department. His lectures are not clear, his exams are not clear. You will have no idea what he is talking about. Math department should really gives students another choice for this class other than professor Dye.
Your grade is pretty much dependent on your group. I've taken him in the fall and got an A. Now, not so much. It's a tough class but he is a BRUTAL grader. If you don't land yourself in a solid group, you are toast. We had 3 days to do the final, he made corrections leading up until a day before it was due, REALLY?! No extra time no remorse.
This class is very hard. Before you sign up, make sure you have a solid group. I had an amazing group. We worked really hard, but amount of work we put it in was unnecessary and a burden because we would have to be in office hours everyday for the mistakes he made on OUR exams. To get an A is all about luck...
This professor isnt that bad, but bad to an extent of understanding material. The class is very hard to understand in my opinion and taking notes in classes is very useless. He may give tips on how to prepare for the exam, but it is not enough. Im taking this class in person, and you cannot work with others in an exam. Take at your risk.
Professor's teaching style is unique. He treats students as math-mature so you might get the grad-level course vibes. He relates things to real-life examples very well, which makes the class entertaining. He gives a lot of ungraded homework and will help with it. He is very approachable so ask him if you don't understand. Came unprepared sometimes.
The worst professor knowing the materials he talks during class is not going to get you good grade
He is a friendly professor and tried his best to teach the material, but his lectures were often hard to follow. He likes to talk a lot and would go off-topic frequently. I suggest creating a study group and using outside sources to understand the material. He also provided keys to previous exams and his exams would follow a similar pattern.
Prof. Dye is a very nice man. Homework was optional, but recommended as well as looking at old tests he provides. Exams had no surprises, know the study material and you'll ace everything. He tends to go on tangents a lot though. And would often mess up in lectures (more towards the end when things got more difficult). Overall, would recommend.
I love his chaotic energy and engaging lectures. Urges you to figure things out by yourself instead of just giving the answer right away. A very heuristic way of teaching. He's not everyone's cup of tea, but by far and away probably one of my favorite professors ever.
Prof. Dye's class was certainly unique; It felt like a puzzles class where he wouldn't give you the answer, so you go out of your way to find the answer. That's the key to this class. He posts all his previous exams and his keys, so practice on those 1 month before the exam. It is very easy to score a 100 if you put in the effort.
Probability is one of the hardest math classes at CSUN. John Dye doesn't collect homework and you're likely to get between 40-60 on his exams. But you'll also likely get a C if you hang until the end.
You will not pass with his lectures alone. He has no structure in his lectures and makes mistakes often when doing problems which causes confusion. No "official" homework and grade is made up of 3 midterms and a final.
The class had 3 midterms and a final. You can opt-out from the final exam if you have more than 85% on all 3 midterms. He has a list of math he solves and the exam is mostly likely to be based on the given list of problems. If you want an easy A just practice the given list of problems.
the original probability 340 isnt offered anymore at CSUN but i took it when it was the final time it was ever offered it was agonizingly difficult, easily the hardest class i had ever taken in my life period i put 7 hours a day for exams in order to pass but there are some genius students who can tutor for this who know the material very well
Don't take his class he is incapable of teaching. I've seen him get confused over his own work so many times over this course. We were even doing the practice final and he said answer key was wrong despite us checking with photo math and the answer key was right.
Prof. Dye's classes are like puzzles - you have to put in the effort to find the answers. But with his practice exams and helpful grading scale, an A is very doable if you stay engaged. I also found unstuck ai useful for test prep.
I took Professor Dye for Calc 1 last Summer and he's a really nice guy. He made getting an A a 70% or higher, so he's an easy grader. But my MAIN complaint is that many times he goes on tangents and goes off-topic often. So many times it's very difficult to follow along. I don't think he's a bad teacher, but also not the best. But I recommend him
With this profesor the class is not that difficult, the thing is that he doesn't go as the book, one day you can be in chapter 5 and other in chapter 2. Also he es not the best explaining things, he expects that you none things that you are just seeing. I won't take another class with him.
Course is almost entirely high-stakes exams with little practice or feedback. Lectures are very disorganized you don't even know which chapter/section you are in, so it's hard to learn the material. Grading is harsh and unclear. Professor seems checked out. Might be time to step back. Be ready to self-teach. Save yourself take anyone else.
