Great teacher, funny too.
Great professor! I would love to take a class with him again!
Although he doesn't check attendence it does behoove you to go to class. His test are structured to test equal parts of things from his lectures and the book. He is an awesome teacher. He wants to hold your interest. I found myself looking forward to his lectures.
great professor. kept me interested and i actually enjoyed going to class. if you go to class its easy to make an A
Dr. G is great. Do the work and read the text and take the notes. His powerpoint is awesome.
Gampher is awesome! He really loves what he does and he's good at it1 ^_^ I'd recommend him to everyone taking Psychology! Just between you n me, I never bought the book. Take notes in class and you'll be fine. He makes it OBVIOUS what to study for the test!
One of the easiest teachers I've ever had & he's also interesting & funny! Great presentations and he gives you a study guide. Get in the book and follow/ answer the study guide & you'll pass easy. U will have additional requirements to pass this class though (like research papers or being a guinea pig for other psych students' experiments).
Super nice guy and a really interesting class. He doesn't take attendance but it's very helpful to go, also to read the chapter before hand. Just pay attention and do the reading.
GAMPHER IS CRAZY!! (BUT IN A GOOD WAY) HE ALWAYS HAS INTERESTING STORIES AND YOUTUBE CLIPS TO COORELATE WITH THE CHAPTERS. AND 1 THING YOU WILL LEARN, IF NOTHING ELSE... "DON'T DO DRUGS. DRUGS ARE BAD!!"
I absolutely LOVE this guy! He is hands down my favorite teacher ever! He is very sarcastic and smart assy, which I love in teachers. He loves youtube clips. lots of group work, but it's fun. One thing you will learn, N*SYNC MAKES YOU STUPID! ;D also, everything in his class has a purpose. even if you think it doesn't ;D
I love Dr. Gampher! I recommend him to anyone who has to take Research Methods. Very laid back and tests are super easy as is the end of the year project. Makes this class enjoyable, attendence isn't necessary but you do activities everyday so it's worth going to. Calls people out during class but isn't mean and is very helpful.
An interesting and nice professor. Take his classes, you'll love it. (I think he's hot too)
Awesome professor!!!! Dr. Gampher is very helpful.....if you go to class and read the chapters you will do well on his test!!!!!
Great professor, very funny with a good personality. However.....he doesnt teach you factual info, he teaches very abstractly. If you are an OCD person DO NOT take him. Never leactures and final exam was ridiculous because we didnt learn any factual knowledge that we were tested on. Wont take again
I love Gampher. He is, straight up, one cool dude. I love how blunt he is, his funny jokes, and I can feel his passion for what he does. He talks like Norm (totally awesome). I would look forward to his classes all the time, because I knew I would learn and laugh all together. He is wonderful. Take him! PS-I'd tap it(haha you know who I am now)
I've taken Dr. Gampher for a number of courses, but I opted to use PY315 because it's the first class I had with him. Dr. Gampher is an absolutely wonderful teacher. He cares about his students and endeavors to make sure all his students understand the material. For me at least, he's as much a friend as a teacher. TAKE HIS CLASS.
I really liked him being my professor! Loved all the stories he told! His tests were hard, mainly because I didn't pay attention BUT if you take notes and read the book you will be fine! Very helpful
Take his Methods class - you will not regret it. Such a cool guy, and a truly gifted instructor. However, don't mistake how cool he is for outright easiness. He's easy if you do what you're supposed to, but you do in fact have to do your part.
I took the Drugs and Human Behavior class online. This was THE MOST disorganized class taught by THE MOST disorganized professor I've ever had. I made an A in the class because I'm studious on my own, not because of his teaching skills. He never emails students back. This is was one of the most frustrating classes I've taken.
I took this class online. It was extremely disorganized and both the professor and the TA were unreachable. Also, lectures ran over an hour and a half long each, mostly because Dr. Gampher sits in silence or says "uhm..." a lot. Online classes are supposed to be time efficient. This class definitely was not.
This was the worst online class I've ever taken. He was so unorganized, posted lectures late, and he said he would post the test by a certain time and it'd be 2 days later before he ever did. It wasn't necessarily a hard class but extremely frustrating. I don't recommend taken him if you want to take this class.
If you watch most of his lectures and print out his notes for the test this class is really easy. He is sometimes hard to get in contact with and a little disorganized but he is usually pretty helpful if you email him. I recommend this class if you are looking for an easy A in psychology.
This guy is horrible. His tests make no sense. Very disorganized, did I say very disorganized. Lectures are horrible.
He is not a very organized, teach by the book type of professor and he warns you of this the first day of class! Overall, I do enjoy his class even though he can be frustrating at times. The group project doesn't get assigned till later and is a bit of a hassle but you'll do fine if you just go with the flow. You need the book for exams!
Interesting teacher. Great at teaching, and helpful. However, if you get on his badside/have a disability he is quite predjudice. If you miss an exam, expect not to be able to make it up for 3-4+
Dr. Gampher teaches several different classes. If you take his online classes, you must listen to his lectures. In class is better. Also, he is very cute.
Took as an extra class. Very helpful and easy if you read over your powerpoints!
His style of teaching isn't for everyone, but if u open up to the madness then the class is great. I got a B in his methods class and would take him again. He likes for students to discover and learn from experience rather than read from the book or slides.
I took his online Drugs&Human Behavior class. His lectures are pretty lengthy and at times disorganized in comparison with the book and PowerPoint slides. The tests are very difficult and the material covered on each test tends to be very broad. If you put forth the effort, study, listen to lectures, you'll pass the class.
He is the best professor I've ever had. I'm actually sad I won't have him ever again. He is incredibly passionate about psychology in general. You can ask him anything and he'll be more than happy to answer. Be sure to READ the chapters and take your own notes on top of his and it will be an easy class. I also think he's handsome ;)
Dr. Gampher is passionate about psychology. Although he is a little scatter-brained, his class is fun to go to. There is no extra credit for his class and no dropping tests. His class was a challenge and definitely not an easy A. Read the text book and do the study guide, go to class and you'll pass.
I do not like him! His annoying and makes no sense when his trying to "teach" and his lectures and tests have nothing to do with each other! His not my kind of professor so if u do have other choices go with them!!
Dr. G is a little all over the place, but he is awesome. You can ask him anything and he will answer you (although you might get made fun of in the process). It makes me sad that I probably wont see him anymore. His class was engaging and if you pay attention you will get a lot more than the bare minimum from it. He will ramble, but you will live.
Awesome professor! Very knowledgeable. Always looked forward to class. 4 exams and a final that is comprehensive and counts 30% of grade. Not the easiest class but it is manageable.
He is absolutely AWFUL. He does not respond to emails at ALL. He does not post materials online in a timely manner and he does NOT teach anything. I have no clue why he is a teacher. DO NOT take any of his classes especially research methods.
I took his online class. He started 2 weeks late, and since then we have had all major assignments and 1 of the 2 exams postponed to an unknown date. None of the information we need for assignments is online, and the exam has not yet been posted. We're over a month in and there are only 7 lectures. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He does not care.
As a person he seems pretty cool, as a teacher he kinda seems a little full of him self. The amount of material covered on each exam is like 4 chapters so to me it would have been extremely helpful to have a study guide or something to narrow it down because when you do work and school full time it's a little tough to study all that
He is passionate about the material and really wants students to "get it". Online is not his strong suit. Take him in class whenever possible.
Do not take this class online. He basically disappeared for a month and doesnt communicate well with students. I've been confused this whole semester. Take Dr. Clay in class if you can.
As i look back on my experience in his class, it is easy to pass. He is a great professor just a tad bit confusing at times. Class is fun. Key THINGS: REVIEW POWERPOINTS, READ THE CHAPTERS, REVIEW 3x. Ask questions and you'll pass.
sweetheart and nice and dedicated
Do not take him online, he is not consistent
Do NOT take Gampher online. He assigned a "group project" at the beginning of the year worth 40% of our grades and did not post a lecture or email us from Nov. 6 to Dec. 4. After working for months on our projects, he threw out the assignment due to his absence. He is intelligent, but VERY full of himself and mocks his students' questions.
Do not take Gampher for Capstone. He changes requirements for assignments at a whim. He assigned a group project over spring break when people want to go on vacation or see family. This class is very disorganized, under the guise of teaching you how to deal with real world demands. The semester is almost over and he has only posted one grade.
This was by far the best/confusing professor I ever had. He is very helpful and has a great strategy plan. You will not understand his assignments at first, which makes the class confusing, but in the end you will see some great results. If you are looking for guidance to prepare you for life after college I would definitely recommend taking him.
Test are very tough but if you prepare you can do fine. His lectures are good because he usually gives examples that you can apply to your life and gain a better understanding.
Your only grades in the class are tests. Lectures are super boring, and he comes across as egotistical and rude. In order to do well on a test, read the book and his lectures.
I took him as a requirement for my major. He is very confident in himself, probably because he knows he is smart. He is very good at teaching this class. There is no book. Go to class. That is where he assigns work. He almost always had a reading and summary due each class for discussion. He is great. Just have to get use to his humor and sarcasm!
He has an amazing personality, but all together the class is difficult. His tests are tough and you are going to have to read the book to make a decent grade. Also go to class.
He is a super funny person, but his class is the worst. I am constantly on the verge of falling asleep. The only reason I go to his class, other than for my GPA, is because I can sometimes get in a good laugh. It started out as my favorite class and is now my least favorite. Super boring and long. Brace yourselves if you take this class. It's bad.
He is extremely funny, and while his lectures are long, he keeps you engaged and is very clear. He also posts all of the power points on Canvas for you. The only real grades are his exams. (He wore a costume to class once, and plays music and makes jokes. Extremely enjoyable class)
Doesn't use the lecture or powerpoint for test questions. Read the book. There is only tests, no homework, and doesn't take roll.
Really funny and a pretty nice guy! My biggest piece of advice if you want to pass: READ THE BOOK. I went to almost all of the lectures but the book is definitely where he'll pull most test questions from. Lectures feel long but he makes them interesting. You've just got to be willing to put forth the effort to do well.
I think he is a pretty good teacher. You absolutely have to read the book and dont get behind on reading or you will fail trying to cram. The lectures are mainly just there to help you apply the material in the book. If you are struggling, go meet with him and review tests. I know if I was more interested in the subject I probably could've had an A
Dr. Gampher is an awesome teacher! His lectures are personal and really helps you associate the material to the real world. He is hilarious and willing to help you if you are willing to help Yourself.
There were 3 tests given all semester. The final counted 40% of your grade. Very tough class if you don't start out strong on the first test. However, he did make lectures fun! Stories told in class did help with recall.
I found Gampher to be extremely engaging and fun. Tests aren't overly hard but there is a lot of information. He also pulls questions from specific slides on the powerpoints but other than that the tests weren't too bad. Study and pay attention and you'll be fine. He's also hilarious and did the whip and nae nae when we met certain class goals.
he is a very cool guy class is not hard but he encourages participation. he also do not mind pushing dates back on assignments if it causes trouble for the class
He is probably the worst psychology teacher I have had. His lectures are long (about 2 hours each) and gives 6 papers (9-22 pages long each) to read every week. You have to read the papers because they are on his test. His test are hard. I would not take him if you want to maintain your GPA. Do not take ONLINE!
Please do not take this professor online. For the sake of your GPA!
Probably one of the worst professors I've had. Very arrogant and rude. Lectures and powerpoints are ridiculously long. Extremely unorganized. Avoid him if you can.
I have taken two of his classes now, PY101 in person and PY330 on-line. Both classes were bad, but on-line is unbearable. His weekly lectures are over 3 hours, he will not answer emails or respond to students, and he randomly drops quizzes and work because he's "busy" which takes away opportunity for points. Do not take take this professor on-line.
Really good lectures
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU HAVE TO HAVE AN A. Dr. Gampher only grades on test scores and if you take his class only like 15% will get an A. If you have to have an A take another professor that is a bit more lenient with grades. If you have a good sense of humor and are looking for a class that is pretty easy to get a C in then you are here!
So Gampher is a good teacher, but you have to work really hard just to get a B. He is the worst py 101 option if you are looking for an "A". There are so many smart people in this class who have B's and C's. Take online for an easy A and the other teacher for at least a B. Don't be deceived and study the book all the questions come from the slides.
Dr. Gampher is very intelligent and good at explaining what he wants you to know. Participation in class discussions is key. The assignments require you to think critically, but they aren't hard. If you're struggling, he makes every effort to meet with you. It's not an easy "A," but definitely doable.
if you care about your gpa at all you won't take this class
Worst class I've ever taken. For psych101 there are only three test grades and the final. Only a few people out of a 300 person class made an A. The tests are challenging and there is no way to bring up your grade.
Very hard class. If you want a easy A take it online but I can honestly say I learned so much from this class then I would have if I had taken it onlin! Dr. Gampher is very intelligent and contact him if you are having trouble in the class and he will help you. If you want to pass DO NOT study the week of the test. If you prepare you will do fine.
Nice guy
Nice guy; fun to talk with and knowledgeable
A great teacher who is always wiling to help if you are struggling.
good teacher who likes what he is talking about, very smart. Every week the class is the same & I like that about this class. You have a weekly assignments, 2 test, and 3-4 writing assignments. He makes adjustments to his test if he feels questions are not fair. no extra credit but you don' really need it if you go to class&do the work.
I loved his class! He is very big on participation and has weekly assignments (which gets easier when he talks you through them). He is very helpful and is willing to meet with you is you need additional help. He's funny and never has a boring class. He also changes the assignments if something isn't right. I would definitely take him again.
I absolutely loved him as a professor because he was very knowledgeable and entertaining. Unfortunately, his class was my most stressful since our grade consisted only of 3 tests and the final. I would spend 10+ hours studying the day before the test. Read PowerPoints AND book to get deep understanding. Relate info to real life examples helps a lot
The grade was based off of three tests and one cumulative final. I do not recommend.
Wonderful teacher, very funny and engaging lectures. Does not give out extra credit though so be careful. The red fox will not fall.
Dr. Gampher is a very entertaining teacher. Unfortunately, this is overshadowed by the fact that he is unbearably slow in grading assignments. I'm currently unaware if I'm doing the assignments correctly because I have yet to receive a grade or feedback on them. But he indicated that he would be very tough on us whilst grading our assignments.
He's hilarious and makes class interesting. He can relate lectures to almost anything. There are no pop quizzes and the tests are easy as long as you study.
He does do lecture but you just have to pay attention. Make sure you get the book required because you will need it to study for the test. He is an amazing teacher hes very funny and active with his students. All grades are stated in the syllabus so you know what you have to do before it actually comes up. Good lick & pay attention!
Gampher is super animated. He is very funny and engaging. You do not have to attend class but I would recommend going to get a better understanding of the material. You will need to purchase the book and actually study it to get a good grade. Your only grades will come from the exams so it is important to do well. Studying makes a difference!
Dr. Gampher is an immensely engaging instructor with a clear passion for what he does. Although your final score is based on only four grades, he provides plenty of material to help you pass, if you're willing to work. His lectures are hilarious and I would reccomend him to anybody.
If you can Dr. Gampher for any class do it. I had him for PY 101 as well. Hes passionate and funny. Hes a fair grader and the exams are easy since this is a writing class. Take notes on discussion days, itll be on the exam. Easy class overall, and I enjoyed it.
He tries to make lectures funny but he uses a lot of dad jokes so it doesn't work. All he does is read off the powerpoints which are straight out of the book. If you read your book you're good.
Dr. Gampher is awesome if youre ready to learn. He even dressed up as Lil Pump for class one time. He does everything he can to help you remember what he teaches. I would definitely take again. You dont use the book in class, but you HAVE to read it to make good grades. The whole grade is comprised of three exams and a final.
Even though he's extraordinarily full of himself, he cares a lot. He posts all of his slides online, so if you just make Quizlets to learn the material you'll come out with a good grade. If you do go to class, he gives a lot of examples of concepts to help the material stick. Not a hard class, just understand concepts/definitions and you'll be ok.
Funny guy. You don't need the book, just read over all of his powerpoint slides carefully before each test and you will come out with a good grade. Grading is not too forgiving, so one bad test grade can kill our overall class grade
Gives very unclear instructions and feedback, awful at getting anything graded in a reasonable time, even though he had two TAs. Kinda has a superiority complex, he talks and acts as if you should already understand everything he's saying. Class is kinda hard to get into the groove, but once you do, it's not too bad. Solid class, annoying prof.
loved gampher so much. really understanding guy, hilarious, and great at communicating. go to class and you'll pass. the work is hard but he is willing to help if you need it. class is actually fun to go to and he hardly ever made us come to class on fridays.
Dr. Gampher is a great professor who enjoys what he is teaching, so learning the information is easy for students. He can be a bit blunt and direct when he is giving feedback, but if you do not take it personally (because he does not know you, so why would you) and use the feedback as a tool for future assignments, you will be fine.
Best professor I've ever had. He had us dying laughing. He's a huge nerd, and that's why he's so good at his job. You really do need to read the book. There are a few exams with a quiz in between each one.
I would rather run a mile barefoot on a lego trail then ever take this class again. Most of the time I had no idea what was going on. The average grade of our papers was a D. He had mandatory zoom calls which were during the day and as a full-time worker, I was unable to participate. He grades tough and is also very negative and rude on feedback.
I had for PY 101 and he was much better this time. He wants you to learn so he is also a tough grader. I only took him again because no other professor was teaching this class. He's not the worst but if I had a choice I wouldn't choose him.
He wants you to be successful but he does go overboard. I strongly disliked him the first time but he was better for PY 216. I don't recommend him I only took it because he was the only professor that taught this class.
He can be very rude when giving feedback, instructions of assignments are very vague and can be unclear. He's willing to help if you need it and he typically responds to emails fairly quick. lots of reading and writing! He also did not grade tough. make sure to watch lectures and ask questions so you wont be confused because its easy to get lost.
Please don't take it online .
Great guy. He tries to joke and be relatable to you. He uses the book a lot and the tests are hard. Honestly, the only reason I made a B in that class was because of covid. Glad I took him. He really cares about his students.
I would never take this professor again if I had that choice. Grading criteria was fuzzy and irregular. Off-topic tangents wasted valuable class time. Rude when giving feedback on purpose to make an example. Horrible lecturer; get ready to spend hours outside of class teaching yourself. Had to struggle for a C. Avoid like the plague.
He gets mad when you do good on tests even though it is on lockdown browser and implies we cheated when you cannot cheat. The grading criteria was very confusing. Would not suggest taking him.
Would not recommend taking him for this course. That is all.
Psychology 101 is my hardest class this semester, and it is an elective course. He will quiz and test you on Friday that includes material from Thursday's lecture. We have a 5 chapter test this weekend, then a cumulative final in less than a week. He goes faster through important material in order to "stay on track" with his syllabus.
He tells you up front that psychology is not an easy A. His quizzes and test are not hard if you read the material and take notes during lectures (PY101). You have to put in the work in his class to do well. He is a tough grader when it comes to papers in PY215 however thats only because hes trying to help you become better. My favorite professor
0/10, would not recommend! The worst professor at UAB! Lots of writing assignments with no clear feedback from him nor his TA. Only two exams so you better be a fantastic writer. Anxiety through the roof! Hes very dismissive and lots of ego issues. He claims he was a therapist at one point and hes not therapeutic at all. DO NOT TAKE!
His class would be a lot more enjoyable if he didn't have such a big ego. His feedback is extremely (and unnecessarily) rude most of the time, and he has a very harsh grader as a TA, making most of his assignments' averages D's or F's. Hardest class I've ever taken. If you can't prioritize it, don't take it.
Very dismissive and rude. Will ask for feedback but will either not take it to heart or get mad when students criticize him too much. Tremendous ego and loves the sound of his own voice. Classroom lectures are never as substantive as they could be. Made a girl cry on zoom one time while "critiquing" her description of her peer-reviewed article.
I was nervous going into the class because of a lot of negative feedback for him. But Dr. Gampher has taught my favorite classes this semester. Yes, the class is tough and required work because of the weekly writing assignments. But he teaches you how to competently handle it. It is also what the class is about, reading and writing about research.
I had to submit a rating for Dr. Gampher because there are a lot of unfair reviews on here. I hate to be negative, but I was annoyed by the constant complaining of my classmates. It's college. You are paying money to LEARN. It shouldn't be a cakewalk. Dr. Gampher is great, although a little gruff - and was always available to discuss assignments.
Obviously if you dont do the work, you wont pass. This class is fast paced. Do not get behind. Assignments are time sensitive, there are no make-ups. Overall, I enjoyed this class. I learned a lot. Dr. Gampher seems unapproachable at first, hes very technical so I guess thats why people think hes mean. He really does care about his students!
Able to convey what he wants you to learn in class. Theres lots of writing in this class so be prepared. Fortunately, he gives good feedback on your writing. He is very accessible outside of class as well. However, he is peculiar in the way he teaches. Tend to get sidetracked but relates it back to the material. He is kind of insulting as well
He talks so much unstoppable. It would be more enjoyable if he engage more with students and build relationships with them. Ask more of their needs. Not just doing his job just by talking over the lecture for two hours. His
Dr. Gampher is an amazing teacher! His class is very well structured. His syllabus is very detailed, and he tells you what you need to know for each assignment. If you want to better your researching skills for future courses and graduate school, you should take this course!
He is arrogant and believes all your time should be put into the class. The class is A LOT of reading and writing and it is hard. If you put in a lot of effort, you should make AT LEAST a C or B. If you're not good at reading research papers, good luck!
Dr. Gampher was an amazing professor. He expects you to read the book and study the amount you should for a difficult class. He makes everyone laughs during his lectures and he knows how to make things fun and easy to understand. If you had any questions he would always be open to answer them. He wants everyone to succeed. Loved him
Want to take Dr. Gamphers psych class? Here's what you should be prepared for -No classwork -No homework -Study groups with a huge community of likeminded individuals -Out of Context stories and quotes -Lectures and Anecdotes with random lessons and questionable choices -The most random activities in class to confuse you -The best Groupme convos.
He has tough but fair tests and you need to put the time in to do well. His lectures are really interesting and you can tell he cares about what he teaches. A great option for your intro to psychology credit and an even better option if you're interested in psychology.
I was apprehensive to have Dr Gampher at the beginning of the semester because anything I heard was negative. He starts out tough, but that's just because he wants to be respected. Honestly, I am so glad I had Dr Gampher because I feel like I truly learned new material this semester, and he made it enjoyable. (be ready for some iconic quotes :))
Hard but fun.
Good lectures. Hard class, but all intro-to classes are hard. What people don't realize is that he has to cover all parts of the whole field of psych in one semester, it seems like a lot... but that's not his fault. It's the curriculum. Attendance isn't mandatory but his lectures are actually interesting to go listen to. If you study you're good.
WAY to hard for a PY101 class. His course contains 5 quizzes (10% of your grade), 3 exams (50% of your grade), and the final (40% of your grade) which is not ideal. The book is VERY helpful as a lot of the test questions are based off of definitions from it.
Dr. Gampher is honestly really funny. He has a lot of stories to tell that go along great with the things taught in class. There was never a dull moment in there when I took him. Read your textbook and attend class. The tests are made from the book AND lectures. Studying is a very big part of this class so make sure that you make time for it.
Great professor with amazing lectures. Definitely would take again. You have to put some work into the class, but if you go to lecture and read the book it is very manageable.
The class is very different than anything that I have taken before! You are really learning how to interpret and report and research. The majority of your learning will be dependent on your completion of the weekly/ writing assignments! He is very critical during discussions and in grading writings. The tests are really easy though! He is nice!!
He is a good professor but his methods are extremely primitive. He would never give us practice tests or clear instructions for the exams. He never shared our exams with us, which led to a lot of us not knowing what we got wrong, which then led us to not being able to study properly for the finals. This class is highly based on your exams.
Awesome professor! Never failed to make me laugh, honestly. He's very lighthearted, but also at the same time a very good teacher. It's obvious that he loves what he is doing, and there is no doubt that I would want to take psychology with him again. His classes only rely on quizzes and exams (no other busy work). That can be a good or bad thing.
Dr. G is pretty direct when it comes to feedback but it's because he really wants his students to be better at understanding and talking about research. He's funny and chaotic but you can tell he loves what he does! Be prepared to read and write about an article every week. As long as you do the work and put in effort you should get a decent grade!
This class was one of the harder PY classes I had to take but it was worth it in the end. While there are weekly writings ( it gets tedious) it is there to help you grow. I will say don't skip class because anything that he says is fair game to be on the exams, but they are basically gimme points so that is a plus. Overall he is a great professor!
10/10 would take again! The class is really straightforward, but I definitely recommend reading your textbook and reviewing notes as the info is given to you. It makes the exams way less stressful. The test questions are application based, but are pulled directly from the power points. The lectures are super helpful so make sure to attend class!
Dr. Gampher was a great professor for 101, but for forensic psychology, his class is a complete mess. He doesn't tell you what material the quizzes cover and while his lectures are heavy, they aren't helpful for any quiz or exam. Our first exam in the class covered 10 chapters (it was horrible) and he gives weekly quizzes in lockdown browser.
Professor Gampher was a really cool professor and funny, but was a really tough grader! Overall, I think I would have been more successful in the class if I put more effort in, but on the writing assignments, I felt so overwhelmed and underprepared.
As long as you try your best you will succeed in his class. He is very caring and will help you as long as you do your work and go to him for help if you need it. He is also hilarious.
Get ready to read + write about scientific research papers all semester. I learned a lot from him, but he made this class way harder than needed. Attendance cost me a whole letter grade & he never responds to emails. He told us he would drop our lowest grade & never did. Make sure to take good notes in class. Tests are easy, just read the book.
took him a while back long story short he cares and will do whatever he can to help as long as you care about your grade and do your part. He gives lots of reading and writing assignments so be prepared. Also has good book recommendations he recommended vehicles to me bc the career i am pursuing and i still have it to this day. great professor
One of the most difficult professors I ever had since being in college. He's so tough. His feedback is not nice & he gives a noncharismatic vibe. If things don't go his way then he gets "triggered" & goes off. He doesn't take what students feel into consideration. If I could give him a 0 I would. So if you decide to take his class. USE CAUTION!!!!
He is miserable and I think he finds enjoyment in making other students miserable. He has unrealistic expectations for this class and he feels like his class is the most important and doesn't care if you have other things going on outside of class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE SOMEONE WHO CRIES OVER CRITICISM. That being said, he is an AMAZING teacher. You will actually learn something from this class. Watch ALL of the lectures, ask questions, and take his criticism as a good thing. You will be fine if you are good at following directions. If not, don't waste his time. He is awesome!!
I have found that I have learned a lot after finishing py215 with Dr. Gampher. He is tough and does give constructive criticism, but it is just because he cares. I suggest not taking this course with him if you can't handle feedback thats not sugarcoated. As long as you pay attention to lectures and put in effort you will pass.
I am shocked at the bad reviews, Gampher was my favorite professor. I learned a lot from his class & most of us finished with A's. He is tough, but he's a kind person. He just gives constructive feedback but even then he was careful to not hurt anyones feelings. He's a very caring and funny guy. Long as you try, you will be fine; he grades effort.
Not a bad professor in my opinion, just really tough. He does want all of his students to do well and improve. Psychology is a heavily research based field and he wants to be sure we all understand research, which I respect. I would recommend not taking this class over the summer. So much material in so little time made it incredibly stressful.
This was a difficult course due to the amount of material contained in the quizzes, and the test.Look out for scenarios and technical facts in the book,as a freshman this was beyond the difficulty and intro -level class should be.
Dr. Gampher is super scary at the beginning of the semester and it gets a lot of people to drop but he mellows out over the course of the semester. It is a lot of work to stay ahead in this class and he does not accept late work. Start on assignments as soon as you know about them. But, overall he is super cool and pretty chill by the end.
view not class as a dungeon Dr.Gampher is like an onion like Shrek he has many layers watch as they peel, be team players fear not the rough exterior, tho it makes you cry soon they'll be tears of joy, I tell no lie constructive criticism, altho hard to accept will help you grow so do not neglect take Dr. G, for deep down (underthelayers) he's a G
Cool professor, super nice and genuinely shows that he cares for students. He will call you out if you mess up in front of the whole class or joke about you, but nothing serious. His class only consists of quizzes and exams, so if you don't study, you won't pass. The book isn't required for 101 as he posts his slides, and there are quizlets to use.
Dr. Gampher related material to real life experiences. If you go to class and listen to lecture he is hilarious and the material is easy to retain. People say he comes across as arrogant and rude, but only if you can't take a joke..
Dr. Gampher gets a bad rap in my opinion. He makes you do all the research work on your own with little to no guidance, but it is intentional and necessary. If you want to learn less but make a better grade, take the course online. If you are looking for a career in research, this must be taken in person. He cares about his students.
Although he can be a tough professor I will say you will definitely learn from him. He does not assign busy work, every assignment has meaning and purpose. His class is one of the few classes I can genuinely say I got something out of. I am a better person/student because of him. Don't be a crybaby! He's not that bad!
There are group projects, presentations, and papers due based on your knowledge of the various assignments that you have to present. He's a great professor with a heart of gold but he can be stern. This class is designed to help you evaluate your future endeavors of further education to prepare you for the workforce.
BEWARE!! Withdrew after 2 wks. He is impossible to please. He makes passing his class, insanely difficult! His lectures take forever, they're never over on time, he gets off topic often, and even makes offensive comments. He assigns weekly assignments, grades your lecture notes, pre/post test, exams, etc. DON'T TAKE HIM!!
As long as you stick to your deadlines you will be okay. The tests are not very difficult, just watch the lectures and take notes as needed. The tests are made from the quizzes as well! Great professor for this course.
Dr. G takes forever to answer emails and is super disorganized but he really does care about the success of students. He enables creativity. His TA's are definitely earning their keep (they do so much for him). When I took him for 216 there were tornadoes and we still had class. lol.
I can understand his 1-star ratings; he can be rude and abrasive, but you will learn a lot. His class is tough and his criticism is very harsh. You NEED to attend class, you will have a very hard time if you don't, but also his lectures are fun (bro shows up in animal ears and a tail sometimes) Put in the effort, attend class and you will be fine.
I took Gampher for PY 101 in Fall 2022 and he is a cool professor, super nice and genuinely shows that he cares for students. He can come across as mean but its just his teaching method and he genuinely wants you to pass and understand the material. He's a great professor and I am taking him again currently and love the class.
Took Gampher for PY101 in Fall 2022 and also for PY215 in Fall 2023 and loved him! The class is a bit tough but he is always there to help you! He can come across as mean but he's not, he is giving feedback to help you improve! I enjoyed PY 215 despite its difficulty and I would definitely recommend taking him for these research courses!
Didn't even grade all the material for the semester. Took two months to get our papers back to us (1/3 of our grade.) I asked for the rubric for one of the papers (had to miss bc I was homeless and was signing papers to my apartment after 7 months of saving up) he told me I shouldn't have missed even after I explained my reason. So privileged.
He was great and the class was amazing! The only hard part were the quizzes but other than that it was great.
Probably the best professors I've ever had or will have. Hilarious in class, I looked forward to each one (bro wore fox ears and a tail on an exam day). Abrasive at times, but means to be lighthearted and constructive. I learned so, so much from him. He really prepares his students well for the field. Kinda scary, but fun and VERY well-respected.
Gampher's PY215 is challenging, but engaging. His lectures are entertaining (bro wears animal ears!) and he provides valuable feedback, despite coming across as abrasive at times. Attending class and using resources like ChatGPT and unstuck study for study prep are key to success.
Professor Gampher's class was very difficult. However, the material is extremely important, especially in preparing you for research methods. We wrote a lot, and he is not an easy grader. Feedback is always extremely constructive. Overall, a very hard class but not that I am in research methods I am much more prepared than other students were.
he is very wise and great at explaining things. But guys, I felt like I was suffering through this class it is so hard. I learned a lot, but my mental health throughout this class was so bad. this is a weed out class keep that in mind. He really makes you work for that good grade more than any teacher or professor I have ever had.
This class was difficult, but Dr Gampher was the best professor I have had a UAB so far. He would always ask us what we needed and when he said he would change a date or make a change to the set schedule he would actually do it and in front of us. He was one of the only professors I have learned and taken away from.
The professor is engaging, but nothing except exams counts toward your grade. The exams are very difficult, the workload is heavy, and you end up teaching yourself most of the material. Take it online and not with Gampher or Dobias.
Now, with this class, it wasn't all too bad to be honest. Just go to the lectures, take notes, and review them, and you should get a decent grade. The slides gave me an idea of how to answer the test questions. I'd say you should spend most of your time on the slides rather than reading the book.
I really enjoyed this class, and I loved his lectures. You do have to learn how to take good notes (focus on what he's saying, not what's on the slides) and start studying for tests about a week before. He has a lot of personal experience in this field and its clear he's super passionate about what he's teaching. Highly recommend this class!
Dr. Gampher was amazing! The people who give bad reviews about his class didn't pay attention to the lectures or didn't show up. Your grade depends on how you do on the exams. Listen and take notes on what he verbally says in lectures, not just the slides, and you'll do fine!! Read the book, but it's not as important.
