Had him for 20A, 20B, and 20C. A solid professor. Throws around the occasional awkward joke for fun. Won't try to throw out trick problems at you. Takes class step by step. Encourages questions. Very approachable. Concerned with student learning. Very detailed explanations (which sometimes get confusing). Overall, he's "hyped" but not "over-hyped".

Eggers is a pretty chill guy. Like many brought up, he explores proofs a bit too much and does not sufficiently cover the homework with useful examples. His examples aren't in the book, so lecture is helpful if you don't understand what's going on. The midterms were pretty straight forward, but the final was hard. There were a few questions that came out of no where. I had an A in the class for the whole quarter, but because I failed the final, I failed the class. That is his policy. If your major is not even related to math, and you are pretty solid with math, and you are looking for an easy A, show up and pass math class, BINGO! Honestly, not a fan of John Eggers. He definitely thinks he's funnier than he is. I am not a fan of the way he lectures because most of the time he asks if the audience is with him and internally I always want to scream out "NO." The tests are not too bad, but there's not much room for error because they're only 4 questions long.

Prof Eggers is one of the BEST for MATH 20E! His HW are challenging and requires deep thinking about materials, but you can always go to OH and TA are willing to help. Discussions are required but they are helpful so I would go anyway. Exam are straight and VERY EASY if you do HW carefully and try practice exam he gave.

For the most part, the class was easy and the midterm exams were piece of cake. That was, until I took the final exam. He made his final exam unreasonably hard for no reason and added curveballs that we did not get to practice in the midterms or the practice final he gave us. The final exam dropped me 3 letter grades.

Honestly, there isn't much to critique about him as a person as opposed to him as a teacher. I found myself more confused during the lectures rather than clearer, and basically had to teach myself the entire course. But to be fair, this might just be because of my learning style not matching with his teaching style.

One thing I'll say is that personally, the only reason I was able to get through this class was because of self study. Without that, you might struggle.
