He is very helpful and wants his students to do well. He explains things very clearly, although, if math doesn't come easy to you, you'll still need to study. Keep up on the homework and you'll do fine.
I got an A. But I do not believe that I knew the material very well. Most of my classmates were getting C's or B's. He can be very intimidating so it's difficult to ask questions. And he has an accent, so sometimes it's difficult to understand him.

Could hardly understand a thing he said. Doesn't explain material well & rushes through problems on the board & expects you to know what hes doing. I was lost throughout the entire semester & am retaking the class...I actually understand the material now.
I signed up for this class, and after showing up for the first class, I decided to drop. I didn't like his attitude. He gave a pop quiz that was to show where you stood in your level of Math, but he seemed to delight in the embarrassment it caused every 1
hard to understand. but he is the nicest and most helpful math teacher that you'll ever find
Ok when you try to talk to him after class hes in a rush, when hes in class hes in a rush, and thie class is like taking a G/T class. If you did well in math, you're fine, if you did bad or just ok, beware...and what the hell is up wit him erasing erythang with his hand, use the eraser!
This might be irrelevant to the subject of math but he is absolutley hilarious
John is obnoxious, speaks with a strong accent, is extremely disorganized, and gets chalk all over everything. He also assigns a lot of homework. If you can get beyond that, he is extremely effective, but only for students who put forth a lot of effort.
Always in a rush.Lack of tolerance. Does not welcome questions kindly. If your prior math knowledge does not meet/exceed his expectations, you will not succeed in his class and should consider another instructor.Knowledgeable of math but not effective in teaching math.Worst math experience ever.:(
Horrible teacher. MAth is not my strong spot and he made it even harder. Rude, always in a hurry. He laughed at me when i showed him a wrong answer. I failed this class because i was so uncomfortable even being in the same room as him. Im shocked he still has a job.
excelent
Took his class over the summer. Once called me a "dumb blonde" because I asked him for help on the math hw and it didnt make sense to me. Never ever take his class. RUDE! Take MR. HARTMAN. He is EXCELLENT, pleasant, and caring. Shakes my hand and tells me he is pleased when I do well on the quiz!
Don't take him if you're thin-skinned/sensitive. He has a strong accent. Not very helpful.
He was alright but kinda off the wall and a little hard to understand with his thick accent. Sometimes he was moody but overall okay
I could never understand him and he got soooo upset because no one knew what he was saying.. Horrible teacher
I took Math 067 with him on the computer. He did have a really thick accent and he got really frustrated and annoyed if you didn't understand right away
He always seemed rushed. His accent was hard to understand sometimes, but he was helpful. He was a lil weird: would joke around one day, be angry the next, and sometimes you thought he was angry but he was really just joking. He was friendly enough, tho. With this class, he's more of a helper than a teacher.
He has a good sense of humor and does well to stimulate student interest. He does, however, have a short patience for his students. His accent made communication difficult at times.

Everytime i would ash him a question he would tell me that I had to look at the certificates but it wouldnt help. And then when i got behind, he would get mad at me. He was useless and annoying.
this guy is the worst teacher i've ever had! he's super moody...one minute he'll be cracking jokes, then 30 seconds later he's yelling at the class! his accent makes him hard to understand, and his explainations are terrible. if you don't understand a concept, he makes you feel like an idiot for asking questions. he always seems to be in a rush.
har to understand accent, not clear at all, doesnt help that much. i had him for the winter semester...i regret that A LOT
His thick accent makes it hard to understand him. He reads straight from the book. It's like independent learning. He can't explain it in simple plain language for a person who isn't good at math to understand. He doesn't give back tests or quizzes for one to keep and study from. Not willing to bend. He reviews prior to the test on the day of.
He is horrible
I took this class in the winter semester. He was very detailed and went over all the material as many times as was needed for understanding. He also has a good sense of humor. He loves math and he teaches it well.
Worst teacherI've ever had. I'm a 4.0 student and his class was by far the worst class I've ever taken. He reads strictly from the book, has no patience for questions & is extremely hard to understand. Is very unbending & unhelpful - was unwilling to help 8 people in my class that needed this class to graduate. They all failed! Terrible teacher!
He has a very strong accent, teaches straight from the book, and is not very open to questions. I did see him for help outside of class and of course favored me a bit in class because of it which I liked and didn't at the same time, but I would NOT recommend him if you need to pass this class (and care about your gpa)
Initially, John will try to scare you into dropping the class, but it is really easy. He thinks he's really funny, and sometimes he is. He is a fair grader and appreciates participation and ideas to make the class more exciting
he is a bipolar teacher he is all nice and helpful but then the next day he is rude and unhelful. He reads out of the textbooks he uses mathzone I think that website should be destroyed it sucks plus he never show us how to download derive at home. He gets very cranky Also he LIKES TO YELL ALOT you are like 5 feet away too!!!
i took his class and had no problem understanding him at all. Perhaps you guys have a prblem listening. I enjoyed his class and for the first time in my life, didn't feel stupid doing math.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. can't tell when he's joking(does often) and when he's not. harsh grader(make errors in sighting your own), biased, will assign a whole chapter of hmwk and trash it if one problem is missing.taking class with him is like Russian roulette, you might fail, or you might pass(who really knows?).
John needs to find a different career; teaching is obviously not his thing. He's hardly understood since it sounds like he's speaking a mix of English and African. Never cares about your situation and will be pleased to fail you. That's all.
No one here has a "problem listening" by the way. It's a fact Esenwa's dialogue is hard to understand for reasons already mentioned, and he will not let you know before hand if you're failing his class.
He is THE WORST teacher ever!!!! the worst!!! that's all I can say..
Does have a thick African accent but not impossible to understand. Hard grader. Doesn't tell you your class grade during the semester. Good teacher. Doesn't mind if you need more explanation. Jokes alot although it's not always funny. Encourages you to seek help if you need it. His class is not the best but not impossible.
If you are doing modumath you will be fine, you hardly interact with him. Did all my homework and such, asked him to look at it to mark me down for doing it, just looked at the pile and said "I believe you". There are enough aids in that room to the point you will hardly ever talk to him. Go ahead and stay in the class if its modumath.
All home work is done out of class, and using the computer for Math Homework is useless. 4 Tests, 3 Projects. Homework is 10% total grade. Random extra credit. You flunk one test, its an automatic C. You do worse, well, fair well. His explanations of work on the board are puzzling. Along with the Chalk all over his chairs, lol. Get a rag!
doesnt teach anything on the homework or quizzes.... i dont understand how people pass his class
Bad teacher hard to understand. Ask him questions and he will not know what your talking about even if it was an easy question. Do not take a class from him
If you want to learn math, take it from another teacher. This teacher is very hard to understand and is not helpful at all. You will have an easier time teaching yourself than trying to learn from this teacher.
I took this class in the Winter semester. The teacher went really fast; we even finished the course a day before! You could get an A, doing homework and a lot of self teaching. About his accent, don't worry! you'll get used to.
very nice guy. easy to follow. his exams are long, but easy. just make sure to take notes and you will be fine
he is the absolute worst teacher. There is a difference between smart people, and people who can teach. He is only smart, and that is the extent of what he can do. He should not teach ever again in his entire life.
He is HORRIBLE! Do not take him!!!!!!
Best teacher ever i read about his rating last spring, and did not take him but that was a mistake. the teacher i took could not teach and i have to drop from the class. but i register for John class and am doing great love him. he is the best
Great teacher. willing to help
i took his class and had no problem understanding him at all. Perhaps you guys have a prblem listening. I enjoyed his class and for the first time in my life, didn't feel stupid doing math. one of the best math teachers in HCC.
He is extremely helpful and is an excellent teacher.
I didn't have trouble understanding his accent, but when I would didn't understand a problem, he never seemed to actually answer my question, he would just repeat what he'd already said that I didn't understand in the first place. Nice enough in person, but not a very good teacher for lower level math.
It's a shame to have a person like this teaching Math. He is not encouraging or validating in any sense. He makes the course more difficult than it really is. Students are left to find teaching resources outside of the classroom. Shame on HCC for allowing this person to teach/mentor math students.
Positively the worst classroom experience I've ever had. Can't believe this man is allowed to badger students like he does. He is not interested in helping the students.
Took him for Calculus 2. Esenwa is a pretty awful teacher. He makes everyone scared to ask questions because he makes you feel stupid for just asking. Then he complains that no one talks during his class. The class is tough, and he made it such a miserable experience on top of that.
HE WAS TERRIBLE!. He did not write anything on the board that could have passed for notes, was unclear, and made the subject harder than it needed to be!!! Honestly,he seemed nice enough outside of class (despite his obvious arrogance!) but you would be setting yourself up for failure if you took his class. absolutely awful!!!
He was a good teacher so i took another class of his. Very funny but not always there unless youbasked. He doesn't roind grades or at least didn't for me. But overall i enjoyed and passes with a b.
Honestly show up, listen, and pass. He is funny, and tries to help everyone in class learn the subject. He may be a jerk sometimes, but ignore him and keep going. He's just a goof.
Not only his humor will keep you awake, but his clear teaching skill will continue to entertain you. He does have an accent but it's not that bad. He doesn't really follow his course curriculum but they are all enjoyable. It's a tough course, but he does his best to clarify you if you ask him in person. Tests are long with medium difficulty.
Horrible teacher. He makes you feel like an idiot. You come to class expecting to be talked down to. At one point, none of us understood what he taught and he blamed us for being the problem. I would never take this class again. My previous math classes I passed with A's and B's. I failed this class. Please, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME.
I think he gave up this year since he taught class like he could care less. His exams are easy, what throws you off is the fact that he gives NO partial credit. He grades everything by answer key and doesn't look at the work you took to get there. If you go to his office hours he just gets irritated and throws you out. Worst math prof at HCC.
He's nice enough, tries to be funny, & is very blunt. The last 2 don't mix well when you're frustrated. He tries very hard to ask questions to make you think but when you show you're frustrated & just need the answer/explanation FROM him as opposed to you magically knowing it, he gets worked up. Do NOT take his class unless math comes easily to you
Very knowledgeable and able to explain difficult to understand material. Really enjoyed his classes and sense of humor!
Very knowledgable and that's about it. He's not willing to work with the student and no nonsense. Lectures are usually long and tiresome.
He has a strong accent but you get used to it quickly. He tries to be funny and genuinely wants people to do well. I took Calculus II over the summer with him, and it was a LOT of work. I averaged about 30+ hours of homework/ studying and then 3 hours of class Mon-Thu. He was flexible with changing test and project dates.
Not a good professor. Gets frustrated when you ask him to explain things again. Out of the 3 exams in the class, the class average was never above a 65%.
TERRIBLE TEACHER. He makes fun of you when you ask a "dumb" question, he has a negative attitude. He doesn't provide study guides or even tell you what's on the tests. He gives pop quizzes and never responds to emails. He was awful. Unless you are good at teaching yourself math and can understand it easily then go for it but otherwise, AVOID HIM!
This man has changed my entire perspective on Calculus. He took the time to explain basic concepts so it is easy to visualize what is happening in a function. Lectures were not boring and I learned a lot. There was extra credit offered which is not typical of other profs from that course. This has been a life changing experience taking his class.
This professor is a true teacher. He knows how to teach. He is very passion about math and want students to succeed. He explain material very well and spend an extra time to make sure that students grasp the concept. I was always welcomed in his office if I had any questions. After his lectures I loved math even more.
CAN NOT UNDERSTAND HES ACCENT! IT MAKES THE CLASS SO MUCH HARDER TO LEARN!
Prof. Esenwa is a terrible professor. After reading some reviews on here, I noticed that he seems to be a good professor for higher level courses. When I took him for MATH-067 he made me feel so stupid for not knowing certain things. Prof. Esenwa, you are a teacher, have some patience for your students and do your job.
Professor Esenwa is probably one of the toughest graders out there. He takes off points for the smallest things even when you have the final answer right. I would not recommend him as a professor. I would say that he is good at explaining but other than that he isn't that great.
The material was understandable and described well in the lectures. He was helpful regarding test taking and allowing me time to take the test. He also always appointed office hours to help students.
Professor Esenwa is a great teacher who works hard to have his students succeed. At the same time, he expects students to work hard, determine what areas they don't understand, and actively look for help. He knows and teaches his subjects well in person, but is less adept with online grading systems or software like Matlab,
You dont know math until you have professor Esenwa. He explains everything VERY well and throws in jokes while he's at it! He is a harsh grader, but this is solely based on that fact that he knows he teaches well and the exam only consists of problems he has taught very well. I HIGHLY recommend taking him for Calc 1, you will not regret it!!!
If you are really smart, you will love this guy, he teaches in great depth, but if you are looking to just pass avoid him. Exams are hard and long and grading is tough too. You have to work extremely hard to get an A.
Even though I failed his calc 1 class over the summer, he thought me things I probably wont forget. He taught me to be self taught and not to look for shortcut to earn a good grade. If you slack like me you will def fail and the class wasn't hard at all but the way he teaches is interesting. He might not be your fav prof, but you'll appreciate him
For higher level math courses, he is good at going over material thoroughly with ample examples. However, he is not forgiving if you forget or are missing some of the prerequisite knowledge, such as certain formulas from the previous calculus class. Tests are hard, but not too far off from examples done in class. Doesn't help at all with projects.
If you listen to the lectures and do the homework, the class is fine. He does give some pop quizzes, and the online homework is a little bit cumbersome. Definitely be ready to work, and make sure to brush up on your algebra. His accent isn't too bad, and his jokes are so awful they're amazing. He's very good at teaching calculus. Would recommend.
Makes you feel dumb when you ask for help. I really needed motivation and a positive professor and he just wasnt the one. Didnt get a good grade even with putting in my best.
He has an extremely negative attitude. He shames you for asking questions. He makes you feel stupid. I dreaded going to his class because he created such a toxic environment. I had to teach myself using the ALEKS software system. He lectures the entire class and refuses to stop for anyone who doesn't understand.
Dont take his class or youll regret in the end
He's is absolutely horrendous. His style of teaching is to jam tons of information at you at once aggressively and if you don't understand he will make you feel like an idiot. If you miss one thing he continues to speed past into the next subject. If you expect a reasonable human being that understands the virtue of PATIENCE don't take this man.
you will learn nothing in class, so you are expected to teach yourself everything. gives you an ungodly amount of homework which will take hours a day to finish. If you have any choice whether or not to take his class try as hard as you can to avoid taking his class.
The teacher is painful to listen to. Lectures are a week behind the online material and quizzes which make it useless information. Most of the class doesn't even show up and he questions why. Someone needs to be upfront with him about his teaching style because something needs to change. I hope I'm saving you from this class.
I thought prof e was decent. Sometimes he seems harsh when correcting you but I think he genuinely wants you to understand and succeed. To me I really understood everything he taught. Hes accessible outside the classroom and will help you if you ask. I walked out of his class with an A, u just gotta show up to class and pay attention
I took him over my fall semester and he seems like a nice guy as a person, but very difficult as a teacher. Online homework is difficult and confusing, often goes on irrelevant tangents, and the only people that did well had taken the class before. His accent isnt really a problem, but he often skips steps.
Poorest math teacher I've ever had. Rarely gave back written homework & when he did, it had either checks or x's, no explanations on how/why you got the problem wrong. Failed to address online hw questions/tailor lectures/examples to match online hw. Doesn't update gradebook. Condensing attitude. Constantly late. Avoid this man at all costs.
I had him over the pandemic online and offline. He will make your class as frustrating as he can within reason. In a class he always wants your full attention, witch is fine, however he acts as if its a crime for you not to participate. He has other flaws but he will teach the material and he is not a bad teacher just not a particularly good one.
Don't skip class. He's a bit disorganized but it doesn't really affect how well you'll learn in class. Don't fall behind. He has a thick accent but you come to understand and like it very quickly. Do not be afraid to speak up and ask questions. He encourages this in more ways than one. He goes above and beyond for those who show they care.
I don't really know why Professor Esenwa has so many negative reviews. I had him for calc 2, and I assume he is better to have for higher-level math classes. The best part about his class is that he is very passionate, and he makes it easy to pay attention. He's a good lecturer. Sometimes when you ask questions he makes you feel dumb.
Cannot efficiently space out lessons. For instance, we had a unit 4 exam Tuesday and our Final on Thursday the same week, no prep was provided or final exam overview. Added 5 additional assignments within the last week of school. Promised to grade certain assignments and ignored them which will hurt your grade. Hard to reach. Poor communication.
great teacher. he covers the material very thoroughly and has office hours almost every day. answers his emails. will answer any questions you have and won't mind if you ask him to repeat problems. his lectures teach you everything you need to know. the hw is only 2-3 problems per chapter but there is online hw. tests are easy if you did the hw
Took Professor Esenwa over the summer where the class goes a lot faster than a normal semester. He was so helpful and went above and beyond to help students understand the material. There is a lot of work but he tries to help you as much as possible. He wants every student to succeed and the more you participate, the more willing he is to help you.
Professor Esenwa will call on people randomly and expect them to say the correct answer. He will make a big deal out of not getting an answer correct, which can be humiliating and rude. Be prepared to have lots of online homework. He often moves the dates on exams on the day of the exam.
PROS: exam looks just like hw. CONS: moves test dates often bc he takes too long to teach the units, lots of HW (not his fault, its mandated) I really dk why he has poor reviews just do the hw and u will pass. Follow instructions and u will b on good terms w him. Sometimes he sounds exasperated but its just his tone, hes nice and cares abt math!
He was rude, not prepared for class, and would call out/make fun of people for getting things wrong. Especially in a summer math class that moves so fast, it could've been such a better experience if he would have acted like he wanted us to succeed instead of fail, and not waste our time by him very slowly writing down every problem!
his teaching skill is no problem. He forgot to set up the due date of the homework, or even forgot to open the online homework, and he realized few days before the exam day. He reopened it but we had too many online homework (that had 12 section) that due date was 4 days right before the exam day. lack of ability to organize the class.
Don't sign up for this class. He has been bullying his students since 2003 and he does not teach the way you are supposed to teach. He hardly writes anything on the board and uses shortcuts that only he is familiar with for every section. When you get an answer wrong he sighs and stares off into the distance not encouraging his students at all.
Do not take this class, when you answer a question wrong he will remain silent or comment on your learning ability and will also make remarks towards absences asking his students why they are absent in a mean way. I'm just astounded that the head of the math department has not had a chat with him about his behavior.
He may be personally good at math, but he has no idea how to instruct students. I had to teach myself through MathLab, because I could not learn from this professor. I only earned a 'C'. He is extremely rude and disrespectful to his students and belittles them for not knowing the correct answers. Most students in my class stopped attending class.
I took him for winter for college algebra. Usually during winter, teachers are extremely helpful because everything is rushed in 4 weeks. This man did not help for anything!!! Everything is on your own, if you ask a question, he will not give you a helpful answer. He is also a tough grader when it comes to written homework. Do not recommend!
I will say that success in this class, as well as many others you will take, is dependent on the effort you put forth as part of the team. I took Esenwa's Calculus I course, he covered everything thoroughly with even a slight sense of humor in real life applications of differentiation. He also encourages active participation and cares for students.
This Professor is a great teacher and is available outside of class time to review. My biggest advice, is be ready to do A LOT of homework and studying. This class is very hard and has way too much homework, but the professor does not have control of this, since the department decides these things.
He is one of the most difficult professors i have had. seriously does pop quizzes all the time because of students who don't attend and does not allow for make-up even if you had an emergency. he said that the only thing he would accept as an excuse was a doctors note. he makes his students feel dumb if they don't understand after the first time.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!! If you do not want to have your anxiety get sparked up, have PTSD, terrible headaches or have so much frustration.
Participation are required in his class. If none of the students give him a feedback during lecture, he'll start complaining as if he was talking to nobody without realizing that the students are actually trying to keep up with him and busy taking notes. Get ready to get blamed if you answer his question incorrectly!
My first impression was that he is very rude and if you get a question wrong he will get angry at you and tell everyone in the class that you got it wrong. He gives no reasoning on hw assignment grading and will frequently take off points with no explanation so you cannot fix them, also takes off a lot of points on tests for minor mistakes.
Since english isn't his first language a lot of the things he says seems rude. You can tell he is passionate about what he teaches though which I respect, but he cares too much about babysitting students like calling out students on their computers or phones. When correcting students he is a bit condescending. Overall I give him a 6/10.
Firstly, this professor does not care about students who do not do well in his class. If you are not doing well in his course, he will put the blame on you instead of his teaching style. He often goes overtime with his lectures. He Randomly assigns pop quizzes, rude when asked questions, and takes off points with no feedback or explanation.
He gives no feedback on hw assignment and exams grading and will frequently take off points for minor mistakes (missed a negative), if you used different methods other than what the teaches he will take half points off even if the answer is correct. There are Matlab assignments that he will take points off if the does not understand a command.
He made the class straightforward - I had not taken linear or calc III prior to this class and still understood it. He has a great sense of humor. Grades harshly on tests and hw, but if you talk with him (prove your work shows you know how to solve the problem), he will most likely give points back. Participate/reach out and you will do well!
He doesn't give feedback on hw and gets irritated when you ask questions. He'll call you out in front of the entire class and try to make you feel bad. To be successful in this class: do your homework, do practice problems, and watch YouTube if you're having trouble with the topic. The exams are just like the homework problems.
Grades too hard, sometimes homework(which was graded on accuracy) wasn't even taught before it was assigned. Calls your name and gets mad if you don't answer in .5 seconds or less.
This professor is not here to help students succeed. Hegoes out of his way to make the students that don't understand his methods of teaching feel terrible for not comprehending. He can't be asked a question, he will make fun of you and will not help you understand. Terrible management of a class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
He is really unclear, especially with when tests will be. He'll promise to give you a week in advance notice for exams, but then he'll announce one for 2 days later, the Day we get back from thanksgiving break. Don't take him, if I didn't have his class my semester would be so much less stressful. He also gave 3-4 unannounced pop quizzes.
Professor Esenwa makes the material straightforward, even for those without prior linear algebra or calc III experience. Grades can be harsh, but talking with him and showing your work will often get points back. Participate and use resources like unstuck ai - it really helps!
If you want to learn the entirety of Calc 2 on your own, this is the class for you. He has a very confusing way of teaching, and if you ask a question, you probably will not get a straightforward answer. He also has horrible time management, we had 2 exams on our finals week while also rushing through the last unit (out of 4) in 3 days.
He focuses more on the conceptual part of the math, which makes it much more easier to understand how to manipulate numbers and formulae.
He is very inconsistent when it comes to exams. For example we only had one exam until the last 2 weeks of a 7 week. Creating exam 3 and the final being one day apart. Also was unable to final all of the unit to be able to go onto the next level. All and all I would not take his class again if I had the choice.
Poor time management skills. If you do badly on one exam, your grade is screwed. Not to mention, we had our unit 3 exam on the last day before the finals. We never even went over the 4th unit, because we were still on Unit 3.
Hello Prof esenwa, I took your class in precal 2, but this class was honestly the best i had ever taken. I believe you are one of the best math teachers out there, and as long as people pay attention and take notes, they pass(along with completing hw), what is just as good is the fact that seating arrangement allowed discussions and teamwork.
So bad no explanation of course material whatsoever just overall a horrible experience.
very unorganized and hard to understand
This was the toughest class I have taken so far in Higher Education. My advice is prepare for 10 hours or more outside of class every week to review videos, practice questions and do homework. I took Math 061 and Math 067 prior and feel I was not well prepared. I grew to oddly like his teaching style but the 3 exams hold 90% weight of your grade.
