i liked the way he taught the subject. interesting nice guy. i had never taken a philosphy class and that was exactly what i wanted. very informative
I don't know what to say bout this guy, he's hard to pay attention to and goes on and on. But if you do pay attention it can be good. But I think i could learn more from the people in my class then from this guy,
he isn't easy, but he does know his stuff. helps you understand the language and the context of the readings. great guy, easy going all you have to do is do the work, think, wonder, find your own believes and try not to contradict yourself in your papers. loves what he teachs and is authentic in his own questioning. i learned so much my head hurts.
This class was very informative. If you do not understand something, he is always more than happy to meet with you and help clarify things. Knows his stuff and you will leave his class with a better understanding of what you could face while working in a medical profession.
One of my favorite teachers. VERY caring, honest, patient, fair person. His explanations are crystal-clear. He invites discussion and always makes sure that the main concepts make sense to everyone. Perfect philosophy teacher.
Great teacher, great guy. He knows his stuff and makes sure that you understand it as well. Very open to discusion and questions. He is truely here to help us. I would defiantly recommend him.
He is a great teacher, and very laid back. There are only two papers and a weekly reading. He made differant readings relevent ,and is very approachable. I would highly recomend him! Existentialism is a great class and will change your ideas about life, and the way you see the world.
Mr Farnum is a great guy, good instructor, however I was disappointed with the class -- PHL of Religion. Not at all what I expected. John teaches other classes, which I would take.
Excellent teacher in all ways. Funny, laid back, helpful, explains things well. Always available for help.
Wow. This guy is amazing. He's clear, precise, inspiring, and a great person. Take this class.
Quite possibly the best professor I have ever had. Intelligent , kindhearted, and humorous. Take every class you can from this man, suck his knowledge, and reenter the world as a better person.
This prof ROCKS! Take anything and everything you can from him. He's brilliant, incredibly knowledgeable, funny, and helpful. He seems to grade on the effort you make to understand the subject, not just memorization of the material. Probably the best prof I've ever had (in any subject), including ones at the University I previously attended.
Mr. Farnum is a great instructor!!! He is very educated in his field, and very helpful. There was hardly any work, and most of the education was learned in class through discussion. I would easily take another class through him. Highly recommend!!!
I agree with other comments, Farnum is an awesome instructor! I learned an incredible amount, my understanding of political theory and philosophy has been greatly expanded and I left the class feeling inspired. The classroom environment was relaxed and the grade is based on reading notes, a mid-term, and a final paper. Take this class!
Great Prof. A hottie
I found him to be a bit self righteous and pretentious. I love philosophy and hated going to class. I can see why people would like him, but I didn't. I found him to be EXTREMELY condescending. He would baby my class about elementary concepts. Every comment a student made, even if insightful, he would argue, then often repeat as if it were his!
Just finished up his Biomedical Ethics class. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I learned A LOT in this class, and found his lectures very interesting. He always was eager for discussion and even debate on any class related topic. I appreciated his clarity on assignments and willingness to help. I would take another class w/ him & recommend him
When a real philosophical issue came up in class, he would simply deflect it. Most of the period was spent trying not to offend people while correcting their wildly unthoughtful questions, instead of helping their logical process, while <1% was in actual discussion. I love philosophy but now I never want to take a class in it again.
Words cannot describe this man, but the word LOVE keeps coming to mind.
Existentialism - have you ever tried to read Kierkegaard or Heidegger? Not easy to read or understand. You get out of this class what you put into it. Professor Farnum is extremely easy going, so if you get behind in your reading, he's not going to chastise you, but you will fall behind and YOU WILL BE LOST! Two papers, reading notes, go to class!
He is a capable and helpful teacher. There is no stress in his class. You learn useful things from him and his experiences. I took PHL 205 &206 and was satisfied of taking those classes with such a great instructor.
John is far too self absorbed to effectively 'discuss' philosophy, as he would have to stop talking long enough to listen in order to accomplish the self-professed aim of the class. He caters to the off-topic thoughtless students & slights those with a smidge of insight. Lack of creativity and ingenuity as a professor is masked by over-confidence.
great guy, great teacher. knows what he's talking about. i never found him to be the slightest bit egotistical. just casual and a little quirky. will entertain any question, but still drive it all back to topic. my class would sometimes get out late simply because we were all so involved in the discussion and didnt notice the time. chose good books
John is an AMAZING teacher. He brings the readings and themes of the philosophers we studied to life in a way I've never seen a teacher do before. He's a funny, chill, gay guy and his lectures are captivating! Lives existentially and makes great musical references. People who didn't like his cockiness didn't get that he's not serous about it.
So awesome! He gave the greatest lectures and was so much fun!I have a new found appreciation for philosophy now and would love to take more classes from him again.
John is a good teacher who's very laid back. He is willing to stay after class and help you, and has good office hours. The one down fall to his teaching style is that he tends to drag on and pass over students who have questions, then come back to them long after they had their hand raised, and had already forgotten the question. Great guy though.
John is a good prof. Had him for a couple classes and got an A in each. Class is clear-cut. Assignments are easy. Will work with you if you have questions or issues. Writes great letters of recommendation too. Just stay up to par with the reading and work on the papers early and you'll succeed.
If you're interested in existentialism, or just questions about yourself, you're missing out if he isn't your teacher. Seems ultra carefree, but don't be fooled, he's quite brilliant and can enhance your perspective of life.
Mr. Farnum is hot! He's very open to whatever you say in class discussions. Class is very laid back and I'm sure everyone that attended is class most of the time received an A. He grades just on attendance, 2 papers and speech.
He's very engaging, always trying to challenge us and get us to talk about the subject at hand. Some people may not like this, but he does a very good job of staying neutral so that he doesn't project his opinions on us. He'd rather encourage us to come up with our own ideas. I'd definitely try to take him if I take another phl class.
Mr Farnum is simply an amazing teacher! Started out by taking one of his classes just because I needed 4 extra credits, now I've taken 3 classes with him! Very passionate and engaging and makes a great job staying neutral and letting the students come up with their own ideas. Probably the classes I've gotten the most out of since I started college
Farnum is the man. He is nice, understanding, and allows some really "out-there" conversations. His class was pretty easy but I learned a lot, especially to think more for myself. He is very unbiased and I never once heard him say his view on something. Other philosophy teachers may be good as well, but I would suggest Farnum.
If you want an A but to actually learn something while you're at it, take this class with Farnum. He is open to all views, conversations (even about aliens), and very understanding and helpful. He wrote me a letter of recommendation in very short notice, like I said- very helpful. Take Farnum.
I signed up for this class, required for transfer and found it to be my favorite and most engaging class this term. Brilliant, respectful and very encouraging to everyone. Hope he continues to teach and share his knowledge for a long time.
Great teacher! Great balance of discussion and lecture Highly recommended!
John is seriously the most chill teacher. He's understandning and totally open to anything you say. Was super afraid to take Bio Medical ethics but am so happy I took it with him. I learned so much. He's crystal clear on concepts and super cool. Totally love his hair too. Great teacher, PCC needs more Farnums. Holla!
The best of the best.
The first thing I wrote in my notes was: Love this guy. Seriously... John is rad. Reading Nietzsche and other existentialists can be extremely difficult, but his lectures were very entertaining while still covering difficult concepts. He is hilarious, fun and open minded and takes academic integrity seriously. Work hard, turn in assignments...
John is a great instructor! This was my first philosophy class, and John made himself available to answer questions and give feedback so I could get A's on my papers, and understand key concepts. Show up, participate, and you'll earn an A too. Thanks John!
He is a great teacher, very laid back. He was an easy A. Just go to class and be attentive. Awesome teacher
Case studies were very thought provoking. This class is dope!
Very good at making abstract concepts actually understandable.
Very engaging and fun lectures. Good classroom discussions and he explains things very well. To explain some topics, we even watched the Matrix during class! Easy workload with only 2 essays making up most of your grade. Easy to earn a very good grade.
Very thorough and clear. And absolutely adorable :)
Excellent Teacher. I have taken multiple classes with John Farnum and will continue to attend this campus in part because of the quality of his instruction.
John is a great professor. His lectures impressed me. Very smart and relatable explanations of abstract concepts. Classes are full of lively discussion. We watched a couple films. Written summaries or impressions of readings are required each week, but John will accept anything if you put some thought into it. Several short papers, fairly graded.
John is an amazing instructor and person. I took him for Being/Knowing, Biomed Eth, and Political Phil. He facilitates legit philosophical debates that explain the text and concepts and was more than accommodating when I had extensive medical issues for two terms. Fair grader; show up to class and participate. Funny and charismatic. Great hair~
A very relaxed instructor, who I feel would have been much better if the class I had actually attempted to discuss rather than stonewalling. Nevertheless he stays neutral and plays devil's advocate well, while making sure to clearly discuss the subjects at hand, which he does a good job explaining.
I decided to take a different elective instead of his class because he require 50-100 pages of reading a week, formal writing assignments, and a speech at end of term (I think it was supposed to be short and informal, but I'm terrified of public speaking.) He did seem like a good teacher though.
John was great. He is very clear, helpful, and entertaining. He made the discussions interesting and fun to show up for. Highly rec this professor. Lots of reading- but what philosophy class doesn't have?
Good instructor. Mostly a discussion-based class and he made good points and got the class interested, but tends to get a little overwhelmed when discussions get heated. Recommended.
He's the type of teacher whose lessons thrive when the class is participating. If there is a lack of participation he re-guides the conversation, w/hopes of participation. More often than not we run out of time to finish our interesting class conversations. If you have good classmates w/good participation, then you will have a good class with him.
The class was painfully boring, though that probably wasn't his fault. Most of the class was disinterested. In all, he did a pretty good job bringing sophisticated philosophical texts down to the conversational level. An easy A, I'd recommend it.
John is very easy going, helpful and his lectures clarify our required readings. The book is TORTURE to read though and he acknowledges this.
I learned a lot in his class. Some of the readings are tough but his lectures answer all of your questions. Fair grader and is really nice :D His dry humor was the best
John is easygoing, smart, and open minded, which is essential when it comes to philosophy. He does a good job getting the class in on discussions, but can still keep the conversation going if nobody is in the mood to talk. He explains the subject matter and reasoning involved clearly. I would highly recommend him for philosophy classes.
I enjoy that he make video lectures as this helps to connect to the material more than what is read in the book. He is very easy going and respectable.
Johns class was exceptional. We all sat in a circle for class, it was in discussion form which may appear daunting at first but you get to hear other peoples idea and share yours as well. It was one of my favorite classes at PCC.
I really love the idea that he actually posts a video every week explaining about the lecture! That's absolutely helpful when it comes to philosophy! There are not many tests during the course, but weekly assignment mostly consists of writing a summary on an assigned chapter and seeking for scenario online that fits with the topic to post.
John is hands down one of the best teaches that I've ever had in my life! He's very knowledgeable about philosophy, great at getting students to analyze things in uncommon ways, and he's pretty damn funny! His Existentialism class consisted of readings, lectures & class discussions, and a couple of papers. Take his class, It's worth it!
This has been my relaxing homework this term 3 I love this class so much. I like that he had videos for us to watch each week (after you term in reading notes). You do have to put in "work" to get your "easy A" but it is fun! So it really doesn't feel like work at all. Love this professor! Love this class! I would totally take it again if I had to
Great class to take! He challenges your mind to think differently. You have readings and notes you take for the readings but they are pretty easy. Two essays that you choose the topic. It's a great class. Highly recommend!
Best... Professor... Ever! If you get a chance, and have an interest in philosophy, please, take his class. Such a good person and inspirational. He just want you to try your best and be active in the class. Not an easy A if you're wanting a walk.
Class required weekly readings from a book, weekly discussion posts with replies, weekly reading notes submitted for the readings, and 2 papers. Pretty easy class if you keep up with everything. I found it was much more interesting than I expected. Professor was clear on expectations and due dates. Would definitely take again.
loved John, super easy class and easy guy to work with. you read a lot and learn a lot and discuss a lot. if you are engaged in what you're doing, it'll be a great time! He jokes around about himself and can get the class giggling pretty fast. awesome class and wonderful guy overall
I took this class online and it was really easy. He has clear grading criteria. Just follow all the instructions for the two essays, you will be fine.
John Farnum is my favorite teacher at PCC. Ive taken two of his classes; Being and Knowing, and Philosophy of Religion. I got an A in both because Farnum really helps you to get the grade you want. He really cares and is very enthusiastic.
His breakdown of each section was relatable, comprehensive and somehow also brief. Note: You earn each section of the Module by completing the previous piece! This means that you cannot get to the discussions without going through the entire module. Finish the whole Mod. by the discussion due date and you'll be golden. He was an excellent teacher.
John is a great professor. Very laid back, and he takes difficult ethical theories and transforms them into something manageable. He is also just a kind person in general. Grade is based on weekly notes, 2 essays, attendance, general participation, and participation in a discussion. I could listen to him talk forever
Though sometimes the language philosophers use can be difficult to understand, John put everything in context and explains the readings clearly during the lectures. He is flexible with the content of the reading notes, so if you didn't understand, but articulate why, you'll get credit for it. I really enjoyed this class and definitely recommend!!
Amazing teacher, first time trying philosophy out and he was so funny and the topics we would talk about were really engaging and interesting. Makes you question life from other peoples perspectives and understand life. Two papers the entire term, no tests. The reading can be boring but again he makes the lectures so fun.
I really liked this professor. He was flexible with due dates. You HAVE to read the text book to pass because you do reading notes every week (not overboard). You have two essays total. Discussions, responses, and reading notes due each week. The only thing I didn't like about the class was no extra credit and not a ton of room for error on grades.
I really like John as a teacher. Hes kind and funny, and its clear he really likes teaching. He really wants his students to do well and have fun in his class. I gained a new appreciation for the humanities after this class and I learned more than I was expecting to. He really knows how to make seemingly boring subjects engaging and fun to learn.
John is one of the best phil instructors I've had (I'm phil major). He loves his work, he's super fun, and he makes tough concepts really easy to understand - he wants his students to succeed. Readings can be tough, so be sure to take your time with those. Two big essays, no exams, reading notes every week, but they're very simple.
Easy class that didn't go into much depth. You will briefly touch upon a new topic each week and then move on to the next. Weekly assignments are almost trivial as long as you show that you tried; some students were totally lost. BUT start early on the 2 essays, he DOES have standards. PCC has free writing tutors, so seek help if you need it!
This was an Ethics class, and honestly so easy! There is some reading but it's not daunting, his "textbook" is an anthology of ethics essays and each week you just had to read 10-20 pages and write notes on your reading. His requirements are minimal. Easy class and I learned a lot.
The class is doable. You do however have to read a lot since most of the teachings are from the book. The information are a bit profound in nature but all in all you will learn some pretty useful things. You have 2 papers about 5 pages long and a bunch of discussions and important reading notes to take, to show that you are involved in the material
Professor John Farnum is a good guy! He is not a hard grader and give good feedback! the class itself is not hard because there is not a lot of homework, but get ready to read! You will likely become a more humane person after this ethics class! I highly recommend it!
Professor Farnum is great, I feel like if I had a different teacher I wouldn't have liked the class.
Prof. Farnum is an AMAZING teacher and is often goofy in lectures. He's clear in his expectations. A typical week is reading assigned reading, writing reading notes & turning them in, watching a lecture, & doing discussion posts. There are 2 papers to write, 1 midterm & 1 final. I spent roughly 4-6 hours a week on this course (excluding papers).
LOTS OF READING!!! 15+pages regularly, but i learned so much. That being said, it's pretty simple once you get in the swing of it. Read, take notes, watch lectures, post and respond to group discussions. At the end there's docus we watch, really opened my mind to different ways of thinking! he's a super chill guy, would take again.
John is great professor, super chill, flexible, and all around just very nice. The reading can be a bit much especially if you get behind but over all it was an amazing class.
This is a very lecture heavy class but it does a great job to introduce students to the humanities. I often got bored during these lectures but others around me were drawn to them. If you are into the humanities or think you may be interested in them, take this professor.
