Phd. Candidate Farrell is a real ball buster. His ambiguous 20 question multiple choice test and no-choice essay questions can send students running. His rightist views and literature are equally intolerable. Very good w/ cold-war Russia (has personal exp
Mr. Farrel was one of the best instructors I've had. His expectations were high, but utterly reasonable. His lecture style was engaging and lively, and his passion for the subject was clearly evident. I would easily recommend him as an instructor.
Very rude to students in class. However, willing to help students on written paper. Quizzes are often on trivial matter in the readings. Thinks very highly of himself. Loves to talk. Thinks poorly of students. Does Not like opposing opinions.
I would definetly not reccomend professor farrell to anyone. I myself thought he was the hardest professor yet! He gives you a study guide but it does not help or at least did not help me one bit. He is a very tough grader as well.
Gives study guide with exact mult choice questions that are on the test.
i dropped him after 2 weeks. i have no problem with learning but harsh environment and no time to relax. assigned homework first day (not usually a problem) for the QUIZ THE NEXT CLASS. 25 scantrons for pop quizzes alone. hand cramps from writing. cant afford to daydream for 30 seconds or youre lost
Gives out study guide that has the exact questions that are on his tests. Quizzes and test essays are challenging. I learned a ton :)
He does gives you a study guide. It doesnt help even if you study. tells you to study the key terms which doesnt help you. the test guestions are hard and the answer choices he gives are confusing. such as A and B but not C. C and D not B. Very confusing. Favors the suck ups. Goes of topic a lot. Hand will cramp out from writing unnecessary info
So easy if you pay attention to lecture and do the study guides. Plus he's an easy guy to get along with.
His M/C tests are quite hard. He did not give us a study guide, not that it would have helped. The questions on his tests are misleading and the choices confusing. Study hard for his tests! The in class lectures aren't too bad though.
I didn't know Ferrell was still around. I loved Ferrell! I thought he made History very interesting. If you pay attention and are engaged in what is being said, you should have no problem.
he is a very good teacher. the class is not hard at all. BUT, if you do not do the readings the class will come unbearable. the mid term is not hard. he gives you exactly what is on the test. you just have to study the material he gives to you. you have to know it well. if you know the material he has given to you. YOU WILL PASS THE CLASS.
HIST 100 is a very challenging course, but Dr. Farrell is very helpful. He was ALWAYS willing to help. He helped me out so much and I will never forget that. You must show up to class and do the readings if you expect to do well. I would not have wanted to take the course with anyone else. He is very challenging and makes you earn your grade.
Dr. farrell is one professor who is going to make you work hard, and in the end you will come out of his class with a great knowledge of the subject. Very nice, and very approachable. Offers some extra credit. Worth taking
I changed my major from History to Liberal Studies after this class.
Changed my major after taking Farrells class. Hated everything. I had better teachers at the Community College level. A HUGE waste for me.
Nice guy, and is willing to help you if ask. THe Class is hard.
Great instructor. Makes you read and think critically. Teaches you how to be a good History student. Ask for help, take advantage of his office hours, and show interest, he will help!!!!
Entertaining teacher. At first he seems intimidating but the class is a easy if you do your work and try
Dr. Farrell is probably one of the greatest teachers at Fresno St. His classes are ineresting and easy to understand. Just read and come to class and you will do good. Dr. Farrell is a great instructor!
Dr. Farrel is one of the best teachers that I have had. He has interesting lectures, and very interesting books to read through out his class. I wish i would of had him earlier in my college career.
I learned more in this class than almost all other classes I have taken at Fresno State. He does seem to have favorites, but its only because he can tell who is participating and who is not. He is a really nice guy (he seems mean at 1st)I did not buy the text book. I only take notes in class and I am getting a B+. He's THAT good!
Dr. Farrell is pretty chill. You should do the reading, but not always necessary, but very much recommended. Tests you have to study your stuff, but you really do learn everything in the process. He's filled with good intentions.
.....................
Uses i-clickers, so coming to class is almost mandatory. He is passionate in his lectures, but he's cocky. He is helpful and wants us all to succeed. But you MUST to all the readings before class because that is what he talks about. HARD TO DO!
He is a really cool guy, but his lectures are kind of hard to follow. You have to come to class, you have to take notes, and you have to do the ALL the readings. And all his tests include an essay. He's not a bad teacher, but if you're a slacker his class is not for you.
This class was a huge challenge for me, but I got the hang of it. You must study hard, review your notes, attend lectures, read the book, basically stay on top of your game in this class. He is pretty entertaining too, I enjoyed this class, even though it was a challenge for me. Good stuff! :)
Lectures are super boring, depending on the topic. A few are interesting, but most are not. As long as you study the iClickers you'll do well on tests, Reading the book isnt necessary unless you want to pass with an A, but if you're tryna slide by with a C, dont read. Just take good notes and attend class daily.
Very good professor! Has a good sense of humor which makes the lectures interesting. Make sure you come to class w/an iclicker and your reading done and you will get an A no problem! Exams were easy mostly all the questions came from lectures. He also gives you the essay questions to study for before exam.
Textbook is not needed if you attend the classes, which are boring. He is pretty good though, you can tell he loves the subject. Super easy if you pay attention and take notes. Follow his study guide and dont forget ur iclicker! I would recommend him if you can put time into the class
Great teacher really likes his students and loves what he does, which shows through his teaching...go to class ON TIME!!! bring your I>C and atleast skim through the readings so your not completely lost during lectures, and ask questions and your sure to get an B+ or A depending on how you do on your exams...Overall HIGHLY suggest
i hate this class, it was 8 in the morning. if ur late, he won't u in. boring, hard, not worth it. tip: jot down the quiz questions and answers. the book was long and boring. his grading of the essays were hard. everything about this class give me a headach!!!! iclicker mandatory. go with another professor if u can.
u have to be on top of everything! it goes by really quick and fast. the test comes from the iclicker questions. it was a hard class, not easy like other says, i'm pretty sure a lot of students fail his class this semester. try to take the later class instead of the morning cuz if ur late, u ass get kick out.
This class really made me work for my grade! Reading is an absolute necessity and so is attendance so you can understand what is going on. There were 3 comprehensive exams and 2 had take home essays. You are given three novels to read, but you only have to write about two. I recommend Farrell and his classes, just be prepared to work hard!
Ok the class is HARD you have to i repeat have to write down all the iclicker questions and all the notes cause if not you will not pass the test. the essays were really hard so use criterion as much as possible. Study read go over the slides do all the extra credit. proffesor is whatever not one of my faves.
Yes, he is a tough teacher, but a good one at that. If you attend class regularly (and I mean every session) and on time (before class starts), read the material, and actively engage in the lectures then this class will be interesting and you'll learn something. Remember this is college so apply effort and you will be rewarded as such.
This class is some what easy but it takes a lot of determination. The class is mainly about his lectures so pay attention and write down the iclicker question!! Quizzes and tests revolve around iclicker Q's! Dr. Farrell is a great professor! He's very understanding and goes the extra mile to know the students. I recommend him!
Dr. Farrell has always been one of my all-time favorite professors! He is tough, but fair, very helpful, and extremely enthusiastic. His classes truly make you learn and let feel as if you've accomplished something meaningful and worthwhile. You can't attend college without taking one of his classes! Chili Peppers!
This guy is a joke. He thinks his class is the most important on campus. First of all its mainly a GE class and that only! He shouldn't treat it as a major class and use the "iclicker" and stupid textbook. He thinks he's the best at what he does and he isn't. Don't take this class, not worth the time or effort. Get your GE done with someone else.
Not THAT difficult. Show up, read, do the assignments and you should easily get an A or B. Showing up at office hours would be a good idea as well, even though I didn't. Nice guy even though he may seem strict-ish in class. He generally cares about his students.
The good news is that he cares about his students a lot and is well versed in his subject. The bad news is that he will take an hour of class time to reprimand everyone if he doesn't think they are trying hard enough.
Rude. Rude. Rude. If you're conservative DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He is obviously obsessed with Obama and the democratic party. His class was also very boring and I din not learn much.
Dr. Farrell's class is easy as long as you ATTEND CLASS. You get iClicker points by doing so, and almost all the test qts are from the lectures. I did not read the books and I got an A by attending the class and taking good notes. Very smart and good looking too.
He's so hard because he requires a lot of work to be done. There internet quizzes every other day, plus u have to read a bunch of long articles and answer like 5-6 questions per article. He requires you to read 2 different books at the same time and has a m/c test with an essay question you have to answer. 3 tests and i-clicker questions
Great individual! So crystal clear. I love his voice it keeps you awake and if he sees that you are looking drowsy, he will stand next to you and talk loudly and you will surely be awake! This class requires a lot of reading and written work. Dr. Farrell makes history so interesting! Great professor! Thank you Dr. Farrell if your reading this :)
A lot of work, kind of rants, funny and random, but good class. Do all the assignments and read all the directions, pay attention to detail and you should be good. Tests are a little tough.
Overall he is a good teacher. He's very passionate about history and he does care about the success of his students. He goes off topic at times but almost everything he says in lecture is useful on the exams. His exams are not that difficult. If you study and read your textbook, you should pass all exams.
This was a good class. As people before me have stated, go to class to get the Iclicker points, do the PSEs, keep up with the readings and study the Interactive Quizzes and Iclicker questions for his tests. He tells you exactly what to do to pass his class, it's up to you to actually do it.
Overall good teacher. Hate the stupid essay questions on his damn tests because there's so much to memorize. Overall if you study the questions you should pass.
Pros: nice, gives extra credit every now and then, easy to understand, uses clickers, test questions come directly from lectures and i clicker questions, attendance isn't mandatory although he does take roll. Cons: Strict, no tardiness, gets off top ALOT,wears too tight shirts!!
First of all if you are a person who is usually tardy, don't take it with this professor! He will not let you into the class if you are late. Overall he is a good professor, he is really passionate about what he teaches. He offers extra credit in the beginning of the year, take advantage of it! Overall, he is a decent professor.
Very funny guy, easy class but you have to pay attention and read! Do the extra credit!
Great teacher! Very funny but make sure you check your grades and make sure their correct! Also DONT BE LATE. Might as well stay home.
GREAT Prof. Must do your reading in order to pass. Dont be late to class. Very helpful!
Essential to attend class lectures, read assigned books, & participate in group discussions. Extra credit is offered. Have to study for his tests. Not an easy class but if you do what you're supposed to do, you may actually learn something. Dr. Farrell has integrity & a good sense of humor. He's also easy to talk to & lectures loudly and clearly.
Overall, this instructorwas wonderful. He is very easy to understand his points and ideas. DO the extra credit, it will truely save your grade. just show up to class, if not you will not get iclicker points & also you might have a hard time with the lectures& tests. The readings are very interesting and were actually fun.Great Class, easy A/B class.
Awesome teacher. No doubt about it. He keeps you interested and wanting to learn more. He is very involved with the class.
Dr. Farrell definitely is the one of the best professors ever. He makes lectures interesting and fun and allows the class to get involved. He loves what he does and genuinely cares about his students and their success. Overall, awesome professor and class!
A very good professor and is into his subject, but be prepared to work. He gives you weekly txtbk readings and quizzes, must read King of the World and do analysis, and has several short PSE assignments. His term paper is on King of the World. Lectures are by powerpoint w/ clicker q's. You learn a lot in a short period of time - which is good.
Before this class I absolutely HATED any history classes, but he really gets the students involved and intrigued. We did not use textbooks just had to read two books. The test are based off of the iClicker questions. Tons of Extra Credit so easy to get an A in the course. My favorite class, and that is saying with the fact I hate history.
Be prepared to work if you want an A. Write down the clicker questions, don't be late to class, do every extra credit assignment. Too difficult for a GE class there has to be an easier professor. He is really passionate about the subject.
Fantastic teacher! Sends you all of the notifications you need through e-mail or blackboard. Posts a syllabus at the beginning of the semester so you're never surprised. Lectures loudly and clearly. Helps every student that raises their hand. Great start to my college career!
Great teacher, but a fair amount of work. You need buy the textbooks and an I-Clicker. He locks out all students who are even a min late. He is very structured and organized and passionate about history.
easy class but you have to read for the i clicker quizzes, he makes the class interesting by having group discussions. DO NOT BE LATE or he will not let you in.
Farrell demands a lot out of students. You must be there daily to record notes during lectures as well as for Iclickr points. There are 2 two part tests; multiple choice and essay. Beware, the essay portion is 4 pages long plus 3 additions. Cool teacher but you must love history. I received an A. P.S. Waste time by talking about the 49ers and LAD
Class sucks. Boring. Lectures too much. Have to go to class and HAVE to be on time or you can't stay in class. Test are ridiculious. MC easy. ID/essay difficult.
Farrell is very knowlegable and passionate about US hist. The texts he picks are great reads but there is a LARGE workload--lots of writing, in addit. to online exams and in class quizzes every week. Super easy to fall behind. He's a great guy but a demanding professor.
Good class. Make sure u read, show up to class, discuss with ur group, and do the work. Also take advantages he gives u for extra credit. it will help a lot. His exams are not bad, most of them, u will see on quizzes u will take. U will also need to write short paragraphs on the exams, which he will give u the questions in advance.
Great teacher who is very knowledgeable when lecturing, and trying to connect points from the past to today's news. Just be prepared for a lot of studying and going to class everyday without being late.
For a history class this one is not that boring (no disrespect to history majors). Just take notes, read from the text, and do the assigned work and you'll do great. Oh also DO NOT COME LATE or he will not let you in.
awesome guy, really. always listened to what others had to say. make sure to buy the textbook. funny thing is we passed by the other day and he said hi and "you don't remember me do you?" even tho i did.. most professors don't remember their students ^.^
It's a history class, so be prepared to take notes! Write down the i>clicker questions. Read the book if you want to pass the pop quizzes!
Dr. Farrell is awesome. Super funny and always engaging that class. I actually looked forward to going to his class. Also very helpful.
Dr. Farrell is an amazing professor. But be prepared to work if you want to earn that A. He won't let you attend class either, if you arrive late so be on time. Be prepared to take notes. Write down iClicker questions. Dr Farrell is awesome and friendly and understanding. I suggest you take his class, you will learn a lot.
Dr. Farrell is such a great professor! He genuinely cares about his students and will do whatever he can to help them. His lectures are interesting and he is very funny. There is a lot of reading and note taking so be prepared. Also don't forget your iClicker! If you apply yourself you will get a good grade. It's all worth it at the end!
You will be expected to take this class seriously. You will read the textbook and 2 books. There's only one midterm. Dr. Farrel is a great professor and have a passion for teaching. I love his intense discussions from the readings. Beware, he will kick you out if you're late to his class.
This is a challenging course because Dr. Farrell expects his students to know all the details of history. You will learn a lot through his lectures since he weaves it into our present times. We had a mid-term which almost everyone got a C on, a final which was comprehensive, and regular journals & quizzes bi-weekly. As well as iclicker Q's.INTENSE!
Sometimes he goes on annoyingly liberal tangents for considerable periods of time, but overall he's fair and he's consistent. Just attend class, and for god's sake get there on time. Also, read the syllabus at length, multiple times, your success in the class will depend on it. If you do all of that, receiving a top grade isn't too difficult.
Dr. Farrell was the most hardest professor I have taken (so far). If you STUDY, take good notes, READ, and keep up with the assignments you should get a passing grade! An A is not guaranteed in this class, so if you want that grade you better work for it! *The midterm is the biggest part of your grade so study! I would definitely retake his class
I loved Dr. Farrel! His class was not easy you really have to put time and effort to pass his class especially if you want a good grade. Regardless of how difficult it might have been, I would definitely take him again! Write down the clicker questions, most of them show up on the final.
Farrell is a great teacher and gives life lessons as well as college advice. He expects you to know the readings so you better read. Pop quizzes are almost every day so prepare. All his tests are online so you can have notes. Great teacher overall. Definitely recommend.
Prof. Farrell was a good and fair professor. The online class was not too tough, but there were a lot of little assignments and quizzes to take, easy to fall behind if you get distracted in the course. Gives multiple attempts on tests. 2 essays, but only 1 was graded. Do the work and you'll pass, its online, so basically open books and notes.
Online class. Wish i would have took advantage of the oportunity to look back on the unit online tests, because the midterm and final are exactly the same questions from the unit tests, so I really recommend you take picture or write down the answers from each unit test when you are able to because it will make the final and midterm a breeze.
Dr. Farrel is a great professor. He's really passionate about what he teaches and goes out of his way to make resources for those who need more help. Hist 12 is not an easy subject because it covers so much history in so little time. However, I think Dr. Farrel does his best to teach students.
Hist 12 is a hard subject to learn about, but Dr. Farrell makes it easier to understand. If you don't show up to class, your grade can drop. He does assign reading that are quite long, so make sure to read them in advance. He understands that we're busy students, so he tries to acknowledge that. Study hard, and you'll be fine.
Farrell relies heavily on group grades, groups that you have no preference to be apart of. There are long readings frequently. If you are someone like me who hates group activities and having 40% of your grade reflecting them, I don't recommend him. However, he applies history to the real world and his lectures are easy to stay tuned-in to.
This class was really hard for being a ge course. If you take John Farrell you have to be able work in groups mostly every single day and also you don't choose a group he chooses for you. I did not like this class because there was so much reading and it was so hard to keep up. Expect quizzes and you have to read up to 50 pages.
About 40% of your grade is based off a group essay. Your group grades you on your work that you put into them. I personally don't like that I'd rather have my grade reflect my work and not how much work my group thinks I did. Also theres a reading assignment for almost every class and they're always super long (50 pages & up)
I was really excited about this class-Loved the time period in history, unfortunately he always focused on the racial aspect of it-The class was based on group work and LOTS of reading-Sometimes has pop-quiz(in class)on the reading, weekly lecture quizzes and test on the online textbook-He is someone that I respect and is passionate about the subject
Dr. Farrell was a great professor. However, he was tough for a GE Course. I did enjoy having him because he was passionate about the subject. I wouldn't take the class again only because I'm not a big fan of history. CHECK THE SYLLABUS and make sure you're on top of the work.
Dr. Farrell is nice and understanding. He is very passionate about history and tries to make a change which makes this course fun. There are about 10 pop quizzes usually on Fridays for MWF Classes, online quizzes, one midterm, group essay and a final. Overall, I thought he was a great professor!
Amazing, inspirational, dedicated
500 points of your total 1000 points are based on group projects and your peers' evaluation of your efforts. Would not recommend this class if you do not like group work. I personally found lectures to not be very insightful, just a speech about his beliefs. We don't use a textbook and what you're tested on isn't even on the daily homework
I took his class as a GE, and Dr Farrel is an excellent teacher, but some may find him excessively difficult if theyre only doing this to fill a GE requirement. He is empathetic toward students, but he will make no grading exceptions for any student, so know your schedule, and know you'll be able to dedicate the time and effort before you sign up.
Dr. Farrell is an amazing teacher, Although, he does expect you do all the readings he assigns. The class will be difficult if you don't read. Make yourself the favor and read because you'll look dumb when he calls on you. The test are all online and you can use notes. There will be group projects.
AMAZING professor. Yes you read so much and its crazy, but all the readings are good and worth talking about. you work in groups and your stuck with them so be prapared. only 5 one page papers due over the course. you learn so much more than just history in this class.
I personally think he's a good hearted person but an awful professor. He expects you to be in class yet the lectures are all on his belief & focus his attention to race majority of the time. Tests are all online and have nothing to do with class lectures. Youtube videos he assigns us are so long & boring. I did not learn anything new in this course
Dr. Farrell is a great teacher, he is passionate and loves his job. Yet, the material he teaches might not interest everyone, at it is very focused on racism in America. You will read A LOT in this class, about 100-150 pages a week, and watch videos Farrell has made on YouTube. Dr. Farrell is amazing, but do the readings and don't be late to class.
Dr Farrell was a very good professor however he is rather opinionated in his views to the left. If you are uncomfortable talking about social issues from 1875-present dont take the class also if you cant stand a person talking about liberal ideals dont take him im a conservative and there were awkward moments but he still was very passionate.
He's very nice, but can become scary when the class doesn't do the readings. It's a requirement that you read a 25 page long chapter before entering his class because you grade will be based on participation in class discussions. He WILL randomly pick you so be ready. He also has online quizzes (2 tries) and 5 twitter responses to do on the side.
He's great. There's homework almost every class, mainly readings that may be very long. He divides the class into groups and you have to work with it all the semester. 30% of your grade depends on how your teammates grade you. You have to make a video with your group - 20% of your grade. Take him if you have time, you'll learn a lot.
I found this class to be challenging in the beginning but then I got the hang of it and I got so used to reading. He doesnt require a textbook. Instead he has a couple of chapter books that we read and have pop quizzes on throughout the semester. The only thing I didnt like was the group project. He is s very passionate professor.
Dr. Farrell was my favorite professor this semester. He makes class much more enjoyable. There is a lot of participation on the students part so if you have taken comm, its like intro to comm. If you are open minded and not narrow minded you absolutely love this class. I would definitely take him again.
All the work is done out of class. In class is just reading discussions everyday. Rarely any debates. You are in a group and group members grade you on how often you are in class and your participation. He takes attendance but as participation.
Even though History is not my favorite subject, Dr. Farrell does a really good job making history so much fun and applies to modern life. I am very glad I did not drop this class the first day. Readings must be done before entering class. The readings are long, but they are worth talking about. Very passionate professor who loves his job!
This class was by far the most connected Ive felt with a professor. Even though he gives a lot of reading, he truly cares for you and is very passionate about the concepts. Dont take the class if youre not willing to do the readings.
He is so passionate about history and the topics he talks about. He really makes you think of both sides of the spectrum. Overall I feel like I've learned so much from his class. Yes, it's quite a bit of reading but he makes it very interesting. I would recommend taking him if you're down to learn something useful and important to today's society.
Dr Farrell has a different way of teaching, He lead most of his classes through discussion, based on the books you have read. He assigned 6 books, and they were very lengthy. He expects almost 50 pages read for the next class discussion. He grades very though, and bases 30 percent of your grade on classmates opinion of you. He was kind, but tough.
Dr. Farrell is truly the best professor I have ever taken. He is extremely hands on and doesn't really lecture but incorporates students for class discussions. If you want to be inspired and actually learn history the way it should be taught, take this class with and only with Farrell. I am extremely grateful that was able to be apart of this class
I would like to congratulate Dr. Farrell for becoming the best History professor. I was very glad that I took this class because history was not my favorite subject, but he did a great job for making history very fun, especially engaging the students. He applies history in real-life.
Prof. Farrell is an emotional being. He "spills his blood" during lecturs of past &I present politics. It may be difficult to follow him at times due to his complex thinking. However, if you ask questions he will be very clear with you. Class consists of 2 exams, 10 quizzes, 3 in class writing assignments and weekly readings. Heavy reading.
Dr. Farrell is amazing, he expects you to put work in but he also makes class interactive and you get to give your genuine opinion. He's very liberal politically so if that makes you uncomfortable then don't take him, however he is one of the smartest men I've ever met and he completely changed my perspective on things. I have mad respect for him.
He has a different way of teaching, no lecture instead students are put into groups and must work with them deciphering the reading. Group is 30% of your grade, 20% final, 20% midterm, research paper, and 4 pop quizzes. Too much reading, do not feel like I learned enough like I did in my other history courses. Nice person who will pass if you TRY!
Dr. Farrell is very passionate about American History and knows his stuff. This class takes alot of commitment and energy for an A. There is ALOT of reading usually anywhere from 30-100 pg before each class that entails a series of questions that must be answered. This is a flipped classroom so be sure you do your work, he will put u on the spot.
He is so passionate about his teaching but it can be boring. He makes you read long chapters and answer questions that he created on blackboard. Honestly, I never get anything I read since it's always confusing.
Overall a good experience. Just expect a lot of reading and participating in lecture.
Prof. Farrell is an incredible instructor who just asks you don't blow off his class and do the work. If you do the work and show up to class, your grade will reflect it. He is exceptionally passionate and likes to bring to light the wrongdoings of America while not disrespecting it. If you are looking to learn and feel accomplished take Farrell.
I took Professor Farrell's class my very first semester of college and it was by far my favorite class. There is a lot of reading however there is a purpose behind all of it and every single assignment is scheduled ahead of time so nothing ever comes as a surprise. If you don't mind reading and genuinely want to learn I recommend his class.
Dr. Farrell is the most passionate professor Ive had the pleasure of learning from. Uses a flipped classroom style instead of lecture. We had 3000+ pages of reading for the semester. Not for the faint of heart, but if youre willing to work its doable and worth while. Dr. Farrell is the ultimate gift that keeps on giving.
if you hate reading then dont take this class because you do work by a lot of reading and you read 3 books as a project and he gives others reading as homework. If you dont read the homework readings, you might not pass the final and midterm exam. Book is online. when youre gonna have a online quiz about book , read the chapters carefully
A lot of readings Online quizzes are so hard. If you don't like readings DO NOT TAKE his class. otherwise, you'll have 100% chances of failing.
If you're a person who hates reading, don't take him. His grading is very hard.
this class was unnecessarily hard for a GE a waste of time having to read those stupid books
Horrible. You have to complete a reading everyday before class of 30 plus pages and answer questions. Online quizzes are horrible they don't pertain to the things in class. He grades very harshly. Nothing makes sense it's a waste of time if you want an easy class this isn't it.
Too much reading! Do not recommend taking his class at all!!!
Dr. Farrell overall is a good professor, he may seem a little bit intimidating at first but as lectures go on you see that he is actually a good person. He warned everyone at the beginning of the class that it would not be a easy pass class, so he gave everyone a chance to drop the class! The class involves lots of READING so be prepared!!
Looking for a challenging class? It was different because this class is solely based on discussion and the "textbook" is just a book written by a historian, so you're only reading the opinion mixed with some history. He is a very tough grader. Whatever you write won't be enough for his standards. Also, be prepared because he records you.
At once the most difficult and enriching class I've ever taken. Reading discussions every day, but he is VERY good at making you not feel stupidto the point of almost answering questions for you. I've always hated history, but this man gave me a profound new respect for it. Read 80-100 pgs/week, but most of it is interesting with good arguments.
You have quizzes(20 ques) on textbook readings every week. On top of that he assigns 15-30 pg readings that are discussed every class with a group of 6 students. The end is where it matters- your group decides 70% of your grade by filling out paper based on your attendance/participation, a final paper based on readings from lessons, and offers 1 EC
He's a great professor. However be ready to read a lot! During class you will put into groups for discussion about your reading assignment. There will be a class discussion as well. So be prepared to talk!
Could have done without his political rants, but overall the class was very good. I learned a lot and filled in a lot of gaps in my knowledge of Europe. If you can't handle reading 300 pages a week, though, this is definitely not the class for you.
Professor Farrell is a very understanding, he may seem intimidating at first but he'll grow on you. He's a tough grader but I'm sure it's because he actually wants his students to pass. He's a really good person and lecturer, but often got off track. Overall I enjoyed sitting in class listening to his passionate arguments.
Dr. Farrell is a great guy. He really focuses on group discussions. Basically you have to read 40+ pages a week of dense stuff and then have 3 focus questions you discuss in class. Grade is based off of 4 quick writes. 1 research paper. Mid term, final, and peers rate you. If you don't like reading DONT take his class!
He tended to demonize conservatives and farmers and his class was not exactly welcoming to different pov's. His lectures were usually long tangents, and he put people on the spot for answers based off of the readings. His tests were short answer/essay. Attendance is mandatory if you want a good grade. Lots of reading. I dreaded going to his class.
He does not teach History. You will learn it on your own by reading the text. He assigns pages and pages of reading material that will be discussed in small groups and in class -when he isn't going off on some tangent. It is really a race relations class, not History 12.
I forgot to take the final and still passed. Lots of reading but they're actual interesting. Just make sure to do the homework, it's pretty light. The midterms were kind of hard but not that bad. I'd advise to go to lecture and build a relationship with him, the discussions are pretty interesting even though it's nerve wracking getting called on.
He is a very passionate teacher but his class is extremely hard. After taking his class, it has drained me from the rest of my other classes. Readings are hard to keep up with as it is almost like he thinks this is the only class a student has. Please rethink this class before taking it.
Cool professor but i wouldn't consider this class again. You read a lot in a day which is hard when you have more work from other classes. Then a group discussion which no one really wants to do, thats it. Might as well do this all yourself. The quizzes and questions he wants answered are quite vague and exhausting. He expects a lot as well.
This professor is a good professor, but you don't learn about history you learn more about what book/chapter reading you are reading on for that week. He will call you out in class and he can sound very intimidating. There's A LOT of reading so don't take this class if you don't like reading. Exams and quizzes were pretty difficult.
Dr. Farrell is a good guy, and I like him as a person, but his modules are hard because you have to read a chapter from the textbook and another book that he wants us to read for class discussion. I took so much of my time to read the chapters and other books. However, I was so relieved after this class ended despite how I failed his exams.
Great lecturer. Although all the readings are very interesting, they are also dense, so be prepared to read a lot of difficult texts. The class I took required around 900+ pages of reading over the semester. Some weeks you read 30 pages, in others, you read 100, so keep that in mind. Regardless it's worth it, easily my favorite class that semester.
Dr. Farrell is probably my favorite teacher I've ever had. That being said, he assigns a LOT of reading. If you're not interested in the topic of the class, I would avoid. He's an incredible speaker and lecturer. You learn most of learning from the book, classes are for group discussion about the reading. I love this structure, it wont work for all
Professor Farrell is an amazing, knowledgeable, passionate professor. I feel privileged to have taken his classes. You get out of the class what you put in. If you are not interested in the material, lots of reading and discussion, and really working for your grade, I would not take this class. Dr. Farrell is tough, but fair, and has a big heart.
Dr. Farrell is a nice and caring person. He really taught me how to appreciate history and how our history has brought us to where we are right now. This class really drained my mental health to the point where I broke down. If you don't want to take a class that will hurt your GPA, don't take this class unless you want to aim for a C.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Way too much work for a 3-unit lower division class. Must read over 100 pages per week and you haveso few assignments. Just 1 bad test and you cannot get an A in the class, Farrell doesn't give a rip about your GPA. He seems like a nice guy but kind of rude when you ask a question about the syllabus.
Dr. Farrell is a good guy and loves history. He has very high standards for his students and expects everyone to do the readings and participate in class. That being said yes there is a lot of reading but it can be done, just make sure that you do all the readings and participate in class and you will be fine. Treats it like upper division class.
Dr. Farrell was a great lecturer when I took him for the first time this semester. Yes, there are a lot of readings, but this can be done if you stay on top of your things. If you do your assigned readings, assignments, and show up to participate in class discussions, you will be fine. The class was difficult, but it was very rewarding to finish.
Best professor on campus.
His lectures are just long tangents on a couple points out of 20-30ish slides, it was lucky if the class got to see more than 2 slides during lecture days. He expects you to show up to class everyday. He expects you to read the online textbook along with an extra book he assigns. He is very passionate about what he believes in and what he doesn't.
Professor Farrell is very passionate and cares about what he teaches. What I didn't like was that he graded on few things and his tests were very hard. averaged a 70% on the tests, did Inquizitives, but lost attendance points which screwed me. Tests were super hard and make up most of your grade so if you don't do well on them you're done for.
Took a while to go through lectures and this ended up not giving enough time to know all material for exam. The exam questions were not always topics discussed in class and you would have to get information from outside of class to understand. Weekly quizzes due in a textbook, final paper due at end of semester.
Worst teacher ever. Tough grader, tests are full of whatever he wants. Attendance is necessary and nothing is on canvas. Doesnt curve tests and yaps during class. DONT TAKE HIM.
WOULD NO TAKE AGAIN. As much as Dr. John Farrell was passionate about his work, he was very tough on his students. He expects us to be here everyday for class and participate when we were too scared or unamused to say anything. He made us read a whole book and write a paper on it. He is a tough grader and the tests are based on his words only.
The lectures are good and very knowledgeable. The quizzes, study hard for them. Good luck. Attendance is mandatory. The quizzes are straight from the lectures and book. Read them. Study. The writing portion of the quizzes, the essay questions are given in advance, so study.
Very passionate and knows a lot about the material. Showing up to class and writing good notes is the only way you can pass the course. There's a few questions on the textbook each week but other than that your grade is determined by how well you do on tests. The substance for the tests all come from lecture. Attendance is mandatory!
Don't take him if you need to get a C or better. His texts are based solely off lecture and his opinion rather than the history itself.
Farrell is extremely incompetent to be a teacher purely because of his attitude and how difficult it is to get a good grade in this class. I am a solid 4.0 student and always have been, and this class has stressed me out so much that I wanted to jump in front of a bus the night before a test. For your own mental sake, don't take him please.
Hated this class with my whole being. Farrell made history intolerable and his tests were impossible. The average test score was a 50% in my class, and the highest person got a 75%, even after I know many people studied hard for hours on end. My mental health is down the drain and I beg you to consider your sanity if you want to take him.
I'm passionate about history, but my experience in his class was absolutely terrible. There is an insane amount of reading every day, especially if you have more than 1 class. In class, he expects everyone to comment and engage in is discussions, which wouldn't be too bad, except for the fact you're always wrong and it's not a good environment.
He is passionate about his work, but you have to discuss readings every week. There was too much reading and the exams were pretty hard which are typically curved. Each exam had a possible essay question you have to respond to. I am glad to be done with this class as it was too much for a 3 unit class. There are better hist. professors you can take
Dr. Farrell is undeniably passionate about his work. However this class was extremely challenging due to the heavy lectures and the hard exams, he has a short temper, & is a tough grader. I appreciated his love for History, but if your taking this as a GE, I'd highly recommend taking a diff class.
Dr. Farrell is a very knowledgeable professor, but he can be a bit intimidating at times. Attend all lectures, take notes, and study the best you can. The exams are hard even if you study. He expects a lot out of students. If you are looking for an easy GE, don't take this course. Not many people passed with an A.
Professor Farrell, was very passionate about history and although it was an interesting class to be a part of, DO NOT TAKE if you're trying to pass a history class easily. He often said his tests were based off lectures but it was hard to believe so.
This History class will be the hardest one you ever take, but it will also be the most fulfilling. I have never felt like I have learned more about a subject than THIS class. He is VERY strict, but I also cried during a couple of his classes by his sheer passion alone. I absolutely wish I could go back in time and experience this class again.
He goes based off his lectures
assignments weren't hard just tedious. tests were hard. also, if he thinks you don't agree with him politically (he's very far left) he will mark you down on things like the essay, regardless of the quality of writing. also he rarely cancels class so be prepared to be there or have a massive grade drop
I took his course spring 2024. At first I was outraged by his style of teaching. His class is HARD. However he is a truly great teacher. He makes you think beyond the material and see the way history plays into present day. Because of him I see the world in a way I never was able to before. His classes are for the persistant and observant.
Came back to rewrite my rating on Dr.Farrell. His class was HARD and at the times felt unorganized. However I think about his class a lot. It made me see the way history affects us individually. His class taught me to be persistant and gave me empathy I didnt know I was missing. Take if you want to challenge your academic skills and your views.
DO NOT TAKE. He was very passionate about his work which was admirable and knew what he was talking about, but his exams were hard and sometimes the class was intimidating.
RUN AWAY. DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is strict, like absolutely the worst professor I've had. He has these weekly quizzes online and journals, then like 3 exams and one GE essay. Those are all the assignments, so if you fail one exam, you're done for. The final had like 200 extra credit points bc my class grade average was so low, we were all failing...
The teaching style is awful. If you want to sit in a class and have spit fly at your face you would love this class. (I sat in the front my mistake) He shouts and screams the whole hour. The tests are difficult. Do not take this class unless you want to be depressed.
Everyone whos hated this prof is lazy. Homework online from a textbook due every Monday, with 7 movies that are actually pretty interesting but no one wanted to watch with 4 quizzes and a final, straightforward, pulled straight from lectures with a question from the book sometimes. Thats it. Dr. Farrell is passionate about his work, dont slack off.
his class is not bad, go to his lectures+pay attention and ur fine. Homework ain't too bad. Cons are js gonna be movie day's, he wants discussions among students, it can be nerve wrecking js cuz he randomly calls on students sometimes. He's also very straightforward. Voice is loud. I see his effort to be a likable professor for u, he's trying.
This man yells the whole period and goes off on tangents having nothing to do with the lesson. The class is HISTORY and 70% of the time he talked about current life events and how much he hates Trump. He is the most liberal professor and thinks he's right about everything even if he's factually incorrect.
