Hilarous, tries to be your friend-- may surprise you with grading papers though

Lot's of fun. Knows his stuff and it's a lot of stuff. Taught us a lot of really cool culture stuff I never knew about before but still use.

He is THE MAN!!! Best prof I have had all year. Grades like a **** but that is his only flaw, he makes you enjoy going to class. Enjoy

great teacher, great choice of material actually made me want to go to class. a little hard, especially on the papers, but once you get a feel for him, it's not so bad. Always offers extra help, but wants you to go to class and do readings

by far one of the greatest inventions in the art of higher learning that has walked the earth. hilarious, witty, sarcastic, brilliant, and incredibly helpful... not easy, but you learn some damn good stuff. recommend him to all.

The greatest teacher AT BU! This man is amazing! I will never forget what a tamarind is, thanks to him. I loved his class and would take it over and over if I could. He makes CGS liveable!!!

By far the best teacher of my college experience. Hilarious! keeps class not only tolerable but interesting! Doesnt just focus on classic art but also ties in modern films and books!! EXCELLENT

Fawell is excellent. He made CGS tolerable for an entire year and really cares about what he's doing. Good book on Hitchcock's Rear Window too.

When I look back at what a hellhole CGS was, I can actually smile and remember great things from the guy- best prof at BU! Has you reading some of the best lit in college, watching some of the best films, and knows his art- make sure u take him!!!

Despite what everyone says, this guy has a major ego. He has a passion for the humanities, but not for students. Leaves right after class, pompous, I'm sure CGS professors don't like him

Had it not been for Fawell I'd have transfered. He's not only hilarious, but he knows what he's talking about and teaches a segment of the course on Hitchcock, whom he wrote a book on. Very nice 1 on 1 as well. Great guy.

Fawell is hands down the best professor at BU (why is he at CGS?). His lectures are facinating and really open your eyes. He also has a great personality and sense of humor. Do whatever you can to get into his class!

This man is absolutely HILARIOUS! Awesome guy. An extremely hard grader (something you don't expect at first). But he will seek you out if you do poorly on your exam. Exams/papers are pretty difficult but he gives all the information you need IN class. Very passionate about what he teaches.

Best teacher I've ever had. He's absolutly halarious and makes everything easy to understand. Going to lectures is like going to see a stand up comedian. Hard grader but he's so awesome you don't even care.

as stated before he is hysterical but will fail you several times a semester. I think he takes his course a little too seriously. Art and artitecture really arent important. He does a good job making it interesting but looks for everything he said in class in your answers on exams which sux. good gu

Easily best professor I had at CGS. Ridiculously funny but organized too. He always had something interesting to get across in each class. Not as nasty a grader as some here say. Do the work and he'll notice.

Fawell is a very nice and funny guy, go to his office hours as much as you can, you can ask him any question you want and he will be straight forward and honest with you. Also, when writing papers for him, just write as if you are having a conversation with him. He is about substance not format.

Best professor at CGS. He is clear, concise and makes coming to class a lot of fun. I never missed a class. He grades hard but he is challenging. His material is interesting and you will walk away from the class prepared. Do not listen to any of these negative remarks; consider yourself lucky if you are one of his students.

although his assignments (particularly on papers) may not be extremely clear, overall he is alot of fun learning wise. he has a passion for his subject that he conveys to his students. overall, class is alot of fun while some assignments may not be.

My favorite professor at CGS. He's a really nice guy and brings a lot of interesting ideas to class. I'm a math/science type but this was my favorite class.

Let's put it this way- I want John Fawell to be the godfather of my children. He's amazing. I can't guarantee you'll get an A but his class was just about the best thing in CGS.

Fawell is absolutely hilarious. The class isn't extremely easy but having him as my teacher made it 100x better. I looked forward to going to humanities because every class i was laughing because of his jokes or comments. Great guy, wish all teachers had a sense of humor like him.

Absolutely been the best experience I have ever had with a Professor. I transferred from BU last year and I still come by during his office hours. He's extremely knowledgeable on the subjects he teaches and offers an interesting and original take on the material. You may not get an A, but the experience will be more than worth it.

Fawell is, in a word, amazing. His classes are so engaging because everyone is excited to be there. You can tell he really cares about each of his students and is very helpful during office hours. He is by far the best professor I have ever had. If you are fortunate enough to have him, count yourself as one of the luckiest people in CGS (and BU).

He talks really fast but try to focus on his main points, cause if you listen to everyyyything he says you won't do well. Take him though! Seriously, if you have him for a teacher, God loves you. Everyday during class I am amazed by his insight, his humor, and his attentiveness to students. I literally tell him I love him everyday and wish I could marry him. He's the best, not an easy grader, but he's such an amazing professor its worth it.

Professor Fawell is a great Humanities professor! He explains everything well and makes the stories relatable. He encourages you to use his office hours and ask questions, so do so! It will help! Never miss a class unless you're extremely ill! I look forward to his class everyday!

fawell is AMAZING and im not just saying that. he makes every class interesting with his jokes and in depth knowledge of the subject. he is extremely helpful although not an easy grader his main goal is to help you succeed not to kill your gpa. hes great and i wish i could have him as a prof again.

Professor Fawell made freshman year tolerable for me. He is basically a kid in an adults body, but also very smart. He knows a lot about film and he is just overall very knowledgeable about the arts. He is not the easiest grader, so don't wait until the last minute to start writing essays and studying for exams.

By far one of the best professors I had freshman year. He always has something interesting to say and is totally passionate about the subject. I did not expect to enjoy this class but it ended up being the one I looked forward to most. He's slightly hard at grading but is always happy to provide you with comments that help you improve.

Prof Fawell is one of the most passionate human beings i've ever met. He's a brilliant professor and he has great sense of humor. Would take the class again, learned a lot.

Great teacher but really tough grader

Prof Fawell is so amazing! He makes class and the readings really interesting. He cares so much about the material that he is teaching which makes the class more fun. Doing the reading is really important because he likes to just call on random people for information during discussion classes.

Best professor I've had. You have to do the reading or else you will fail but he is so awesome and interesting. He really cares about his students so if you get the chance, take his course!

Prof. Fawell is a kind, patient, and very funny man! He holds engaging lectures and discussions and values students' efforts. His quizzes and exams can be tricky as he cares a lot about the detailed information. He also pays close attention to students' grammar and thoughts, so take your time to write the small assignments if you want a good grade!

Fawell was an excellent professor and his readings were the best! I always looked forward to his discussions because he was hilarious and entertaining. He really cares about his students and makes the effort to reach out to them if he notices they aren't doing so well. Go to offices hour! It can be the difference between a C to a B or B to an A.

Fawell is a charming and whimsical man who is passionate about what he teaches. His classes focused on readings & art. He is very energetic and entertaining. He values true effort and thought put into assignments. His exams focused on specific details. As long as you pay attention and take good notes, you have a chance of doing well.

LOVED Fawell's class! Out of all of the CGS classes I took during my freshman year Humanities was my favorite! Fawell is an excellent and experienced teacher. Classwork is meaningful, never too much and never busywork. He expects a lot out of you and gets picky about the fine details and grammar so watch out. Overall a wonderful, funny professor.

Incredible class. This guy was born to teach. Not the easiest grader but the classes were actually entertaining. Good discussions and you always get some interesting ideas out of each class.

Fawell was my favorite professor freshman year. He's very enthusiastic and class does not always feel boring. He does cold call, but only when he gives you the questions beforehand, so it's not that bad. Also, he can be a little picky about your ideas. However, his class isn't insanely hard and as long as you prepare, you can pass.

I LOVED Prof. Fawell!! Definitely one of the best professors I've ever said. He's hilarious and makes class engaging and fun. He doesn't assign a ridiculous amount of homework, about a short writing assignment and some reading per week (and they're actually fun readings). They don't take long, but be thorough; he's very big on detail.

Fawell is everyones favorite professor. He works hard at making the readings meaningful and makes sure the students engage with them. Hes super friendly and treats students with respect, like equals. Hes also really funny and makes you relate the readings to your life. This is a course on the human condition.

Professor Fawell is adept at creating meaningful discussions in class. He never degrades students even when an answer is wrong and this encourages students to participate. But, I dislike how he randomly picks students to answer questions. This reminds me of high school and this isn't high school, it's college. Participation shouldn't be forced.

Fawell is my fav!! I never dread his class, and I always leave feeling inspired. His readings may be time-consuming, but the discussions are fun and engaging. He cold calls, but if you're wrong, he won't embarrass you. Be ready to be specific on tests!! You get out of this class what you put into it. Great person, professor, and would recommend!!

Participation and attendance will make or break your grade, so show up and talk. Tough but fair grader. Highly enriching class. You'll never dread his period.

this guy is so funny i highly recommend taking him for both semesters. don't be shy to talk, he's really kind and respectful. he's a harsh grader but gives good critiques. participation definitely carries you in this class and pay attention. films are great.

Professor Fawell's lecture is entertaining and informative. Make sure to good notes to do well on the mid-term/finals. You are expected to know a lot of terms and are required to memorize key details of specific arts. Do the reading carefully because his reading quizzes (not many) are very in-depth and thought-provoking.
