As long as you pay attention, it's possible to get an A. Only gives a midterm and final and 2 term papers. Take notes on your laptop.
It's a half philosophy, half religion class! I love it so I may be impartial but I thought it was fun. It was a breeze, I got a B and did NOTHING! Each paper took me an hour and the tests are straight from the review sheet. He is a nice guy and approachable but always seems a little high strung.
He is an amazing teacher and very approachable. This professor makes this subject quite interesting compared to several of the other professors. As long as you study your notes, you will do fine. Not to mention he is easy on the eyes!
Hes a good professor. The outlines he hands out at the beginning of every class are very useful. 2 papers, mid term and final. The tests and papers arent that hard but sometimes he grades a lil tough but not overally. For the mid termand final he gives u a very indepth review sheet and the questions are straight from there
At first this class may seem unbearable...bc the professor is kind of awkward and boring...but pretty soon the class will beoome more interesting. professor is relatively new but is learning. He definitely improved. encourages participation and tries hard. just engage yourself in discussion and you'll get through it.
This guy is strange but cool, he always has this like nervous smile on his face and the class is hard to describe, but 2 papers, a midterm and final, u wont get below a B if u show up
Easy class, gives outlines for each days lecture. He is a good professor!
He is very easy, uses a handout for every class. Two papers and over 6 topics to choose from. Boring for the most part, everyones on facebook when there or sleeping (lol), but he's cool. The only thing I complain about him is that when ever I would ask a question (or anyone for that matter) he would never understand what one was trying to say.
Good professor but at times seemed to confused about certain topics.
professor is very lenient with grades..kind of awkward usually doesn't know what his students are talking about, his topics are pretty boring but just stick through it .. he curves so its great
He's nice. A handout is used for every class. You can bring your laptop and if you take light notes, you'll be fine because he curves like a beast. He's a nice enough guy, the material seems really intense but he understands and is sympathetic to that, but overall I would definitely reccommend him!
Ok so the guy looks like Tom Cruise, so the eye candy thing is not a bad thing and hope he swings my way ... wink wink. Decent teacher. seems 2 care. Lots of paper handouts each class. just listen 2 go on & on. most of class on fb or watching vids. if u r bored, a question & he'll get all confused & try 2answer but just cant quite get it.
This professor is very helpful. You can't ask for better he gives handouts every class and explains every component of it. There is 1 midterm, 1 final and 1 final. You have to study for it a lot. He takes attendance into account as well. He's nice and friendly also very hot ;) never got bored in the class had fun watching him.
professor is hot. the end. hes great when it comes to tests but his papers, watch out, if you have a comma in the wrong place he nails you.. class is SO boring you'd think a young guy would try to make the class fun but hes completely opp. he seems flustered everytime someone has a question so if you have questions.. GOOGLE IT!
he is a fair professor. you do have to study for the midterm and final. but he gives handouts every class, all u gotta do is study the notes. there is also a paper, but its only 3 pages so its easy. he is a hard-grader, but u will get a good grade and learn a lot. i recommend him for theology
soooooooo boring! &you read these comments &think oh he gives out handouts so its fine....WRONG the handouts are an outline of his lecture so unless you LISTEN to him lecture or read everynight you'll be very lost for the midterm &final. the one paper wasnt bad, hes picky about the little things but if you follow the instructions youll be fine
very boring but pretty easy. bring your laptop to class and you will be fine. there are three grades: midterm, paper, and final. he is very helpful. there are lots of notes but if you take the notes from attended classes then the midterm/final is simple.
The professor is very good looking. Apart from that very boring. He makes you fall asleep straight away but his midterm and final are not bad at all. Just write notes on his handouts and you will be fine. Or you can just goggle everything
class is pretty easy if you pay attention. you don't need the textbooks if you take good notes . theres a midterm, paper, and final. his tests are very specific so you should take down everything he says in class. the only thing that sucks is that hes really really boring. he's also very anal about grammar and the way you write.
hIS classes are not that boring. If you take very good notes you will not have to read the material and will do well on midterm and final. However, he is very uptight and picky. The paper is a DOUBLE BOOK REVIEW so be ready to read two books. He likes details and he is a little paranoid about grammar and organization.
He was a nice guy. Show up, take notes, study for the tests. He said to buy the books but I don't recall ever using them at all so don't even bother. He looks like Topher Grace. I got a B+ so I would probably take him again.
He's pretty boring but really easy if you put in a bit of work. 1 paper, 2 tests. Sends review sheets so just take good notes, answer the sheet & memorize. Go to his office to go over your paper before and he'll fix it all up. Not bad to look at either ;)
kinda boring. he tries to spice it up every once in a while by using videos. one paper but your only allowed to write up to 4 and a half pg before he stops grading r paper. which sucks cause the topic is 40+ pgs. tests are short and difficult. good to take instead of a harder teacher if there are no easy classes left.
This class was really boring. The lectures really made me fall asleep. Attendance is not mandatory but if you show up you could get a better grade. He helps out a lot, tests are hard but he curves well. Paper is easy.
The class is really boring, and you can't use your laptop at all. If you do you gotta submit your notes on turn it in. I never used the text book, just googled everything on the sheets. Tests are HARD, but he curves a lot. Has one paper, which was a book review. I would recommend if you can do some work.
he gives too much information which you must memorize for tsest. midterm and final tests are so hard. He is very strict on essay. i do not understand why many people think he is a good teacher. He is hardest grader i ever meet.
He talks a lot during lecture, you have to pay attention during class. The information can be a bit overwhelming, if you take down everything, it shouldn't be a problem. I went to his office hours, he's always willing to help the best to his ability. Also enjoyed looking at him during his office hours, why not look if the view is great ;)
The class itself isn't that hard. He's super anal when it comes to tests and the paper. You have to memorize practically everything. He rambles sometimes and he's sort of strict with attendance. He gives you a bunch of opportunities to improve your grade though! Not bad to look at either (;
Very informative teacher! Theology is boring but he tries his best to make the class interesting and educational as well. His grading is weird though. On tests make sure to repeat what he says word for word and on essays, check carefully for grammar mistakes. If you follow his directions EXACTLY, you will do fine. I learned a lot in his class.
even though I did not do well on my mid term (C+) and first draft(C). i got an A- overall since i got A+ on second draft and A on final. So i think he is a great prof. strongly recommend you to take him.
He is a excellent professor who tries to help you and gives you good grades. If you memorize all material on the review sheets he gives you for tests, you would do well. His class is not that hard. The only thing you need to do is to memorize a large amount of information in order to get a good grade.
He was a really great teacher. He's handsome too. He gives handouts which are great because you just neeed to take notes on the handouts. He says you should read the textbook, I only referred to it to find answers for the review sheets. The paper is the worst. He makes you read 2 books and summarize, compare, contrast, all under a 6 1/2 pg limit.
Dr. Fitzgerald is perhaps the best theology professor , period. All of his guidelines are crystal clear (lawyer side), and he is so professional and handsome!
This class is very intense and intellectual. This is a good class if you want to be challenged but prepared to be hit with loads of work & remembering a lot!
This class is a ton of work! If you are looking for an easy A, I suggest you find another teacher. Takes attendance at the beginning of every class and must be there by the time your name is called (or else youre late)Assigns a huge book review and tons of notes. Uses Colbert clips in class. Only 2 absences allowed before it hits your grade.
I would def recommend him! He's understanding and willing to work with you! Curves mad heavy so there's no way you can get less than a B... I got an A and I didn't even purchase the text book (don't do that though lol) just show up pay attention and take good notes!
Prepare to be challenged intellectually in the classroom and with his assignments! Leads great discussions . Only 3 grades : however , all require effort . All test questions are provided for you to prepare in advance. You need not only know how catholic doctrinal statements and perspectives, but form valid opinions and defend them .
BAD. DO NOT TAKE.
A superb, hardworking, engaged professor who strives to improve his students writing, critical thinking skills, and public speaking skills, while presenting theology in a clear & relevant manner. Always a joy to be in his class as he is always so respectful and lucid in class discussions, and also throws in the most hilarious videos ever.
his classes are enjoyable and his personality and enthusiasm makes time go by fast but DO NOT TAKE HIM. he is such a tough grader and takes points off every time you're late to class or don't even show up at all. you have to memorized way too much information and all of it are on the exams. i wouldn't recommend him
He's a nice guy, but he just grades way too hard. If you want to get good grades in school, it's not worth taking his classes. The amount of information you need to memorize for his tests are simply absurd. It's literally just memorizing word for word what he says in class. In addition, his class is just boring.
He's alright. The class is really boring, but you have to pay attention and take notes. His instructions are unnecessarily detailed and strict. He seems like a nice person, just not a great professor. Paper is okay, but he is nit picky with his grading. He gives you all the test questions ahead of time which is nice.
This guy does not know how to teach. When you ask him a question he barely even answers it. I made the biggest mistake taking this professor. Bottom line do not take this guy!!
Class is not terrible, however terrible grading system. One large paper, a midterm, and a final exam, all graded extremely unfairly. Worst grade yet, worst teacher yet
gives out handouts of the notes, but you have to fill in the blanks. gives two test and one mandatory paper, which was slightly difficult, but he gives almost the entire semester for the paper. I enjoyed the class, but some people have a nard time. just depends on how well you handle theology.
WORST PROFESSOR, DO NOT TAKE. WAY TO HARD FOR NO REASON, THIS IS A EXTREMELY HARD CLASS
definitely try to avoid this class. only take if it's your very last option. word of advice.
I do not recommend this teacher. He is outrageously anal (FOR A CORE CLASS) and despite my efforts and extra work he did not change my grade at all from what it was at midterms. If you have to take this class find someone else to take it from. He's anal and I don't feel like he's a teacher who wants his students to succeed.
Legitimate effort and coordination is required for this class. Professor is sincere and upfront in the beginning. He will hold his word and yours. Take thorough notes during lecture, they will help so much for midterm and final exam. Start double-book review early and plan it out carefully. Professor is approachable. Kind of a nerd. Uses videos.
very fair and interesting i liked his class alot not a easy a. take this class if your not lazy
Class was somewhat difficult, but it is not impossible. The one plus to having him is the fact that he is really hot, that is the only reason why I paid attention and sat in front every class day. He was just so hot.
He gives you a list of the topics and the pages you have to read for the exams. 3 Essay topics are given too and 2 of them are on the actual exam. The answers to the questions on the sheet are easily found if you read the right pages. The answers are obvious. The multiple choice is easy if you study the review sheet. Office-hours +points on paper.
Superrr hotttt. actually teaches! Two tests and one paper. Grades fairly and gives bumps that definitely help your grade. not a hard teacher at all. come to class, take notes and your set. exam review sheets which help. Test are insanely easy if you just do the review sheet. Paper is long but definitely doable. Take him cause you will learn!
Had this teacher for THEO1000C and took him again for THEO3300. He is honestly a really great professor and gives up to 3 grade bumps which can really boost your grade. His paper and exam instructions are very clear but you do have to read and pay attention in lectures because he takes questions straight from your handouts.
Unnecessarily difficult grader. His double book review is as stressful as writing a thesis for graduate school. His grading system is two tests and a paper. Do not screw those up.
I am not a pharmacy major but this class was just another theology class from the perspective of the medical fields. Professor Fitzgerald is a very nice guy and is willing to help you out if you are struggling. His tests are not super easy but if you study they are not super hard. As a plus, he also curves the tests.
He is a great professor and really cares about his students. If you miss one class, you will be lost because he hands out a sheet every class (you fill in your own notes) and the midterm and final are all based on the class lectures and handouts.
There are better classes. Prof is very dry and uninspiring, waste of a good opportunity for such a great topic. Syllabus and paper instructions are PAGES long, more elaborate than the paper itself. Lots of Ex Credit but you have to really pay attention in class. Test will ask for answers VERBATIM. Nothing else matters but boring lecture and essay
Professor Fitzgerald is a pretty nice guy. His lectures were interesting and debatable but doesn't rely on participation. He's pretty laid back and gives handouts for every lecture. He gives a critical paper where you can choose a controversial topic and write about it. It is the only time he cares if you participate. TAKE THIS GUY!
Prof Fitzgerald is very precise in what he wants. At the beginning of the semester he hands out STACKS of class rules, requirements, and expectations. He does the same with tests (study guides). While you do have to work for your grade, he basically hands you a guidebook to getting an A+. Attendance is necessary because he is lecture heavy.
He is a good professor on term paper but he gives you a chance to receive a better grade if you go to the writing center and he gives grade bumps for attendance and participation
In his class you will read a lot. You will take exams that you feel you have done well and when you get your paper back you see your grade is not what you imagined. He is an extremely difficult grader and does not give much extra credit. You will be lectured from start to finish and you will make many notes.
He lectures for all the allotted time. His slides and handouts will get you through both exams but he can be very particular so stick the material. There is a double book review on a topic of your choice but START EARLY! He's a hard grader but he does offer grade bumps for various things. Be ready to participate in class but the discussion is fun.
I got so lucky with this Professor Fitzgerald! He was one of the professors I had for my first semester so I didn't choose him. He was very interesting, open-minded, and encouraged discussion, often in groups. He gave a few tests which weren't hard if you studied. He made lectures funny and interesting and was always in a good mood. Owen Wilson!!
Really tough grader on the papers, but he has a lot of grade curves. If you miss three or less classes you can still get a grade bump, not point deduction. A real hard ass on the syllabus. Overall okay. Not a hard class, but you have to work for it. A real awkward and mediocre guy, but I guess it was an okay class.
Took him for theology 2300. He's a good professor. Lectures are interesting. Assigns way too many readings but honestly you don't have to do any of them. Gives a midterm, a final, and one double book review paper based on two books. As long as you take notes in class and read the two books for your paper, you'll be fine.
His lecture powerpoints are terrible. He puts random quotes in and expects you to be able to write short answer and essay questions on the test based off of some tiny thing he mentioned once. He's also a difficult grader, and he will take off points when you do exactly what he told you to do.
This is the worst St. John's professor I've ever had! he does not care about his students at all! I spent endless hours studying and got below a 20 on his test! he gave no reasoning for his grading. DO NOT TAKE! most boring class and for his three ours, keeps you past the three hour limit every time. this class will ruin your gpa.
Really interesting topics, and the Colbert videos are a lot of fun. Two exams and a paper, just follow the instructions (and there are a lot of them) and you'll do fine. Plus he's easy on the eyes ;)
I don't like theology/am not religious, and this class was actually interesting/entertaining. He's super respectful of differing views, tries to make the information relatable, and is just a pretty good guy. Two papers, a midterm, and a final. Big grading curve. If you're willing to put a little work in, super easy class.
Great teacher, he gives lots of grade bumps and really adapted to doing the course online. There's usually two papers, but he cut one for this semester. Also, curved the hell out of it because I got a B in reality but he gave me a A-. Really nice guy, tries hard to be a good teacher which I respect.
This man is the worst professor at St. Johns- Gave over 3 hours worth of lectures/assignments outside of the class itself. The tests were always super hard for a theology class, and makes you write a paper. AVOID HIM!!!!
Grades ridiculously hard. Trying your absolute best doesn't matter in this class because you will still get a lot of points off for your test and essay. Save your GPA and don't take him
This prof makes you work for it, you need to be very specific in your claims as well as study the material a lot. The good thing here is that he is very genereous with the curve in tests and papers. Participation matters, make sure he knows who you are.
This guy has one of the hardests tests and essays I have seen considering it is a theology course, it's ridiculous. Almost everyone in my class pass/failed the class because it will drag your GPA. Don't expect a good grade unless you're a theology major and have no life, tho those go hand in hand.
For tests, you need to download Lockdown Browser and have the video camera on, so you can't use any notes/study tools. He does give a review sheet for the test, but it's a ton of material to memorize :/ One paper throughout the semester based off of two books you have to read. Takes a while to get test grades and paper grades back.
This guy is unbelievable. Filled out his ridiculous review sheet that was so long, studied my butt off and got a 55 on the test. I have all A's in my other classes and this guy is bringing down my gpa. Gives ridiculously detailed instructions and then you follow them and he still gives a bad grade. Avoid him at all costs!!!!!!
You will never receive your paper back lol and fyi the paper was submitted 6 weeks ago and is worth 40% of your entire grade in the class. 2 days left in the semester and he's giving us the option to revise, but how can students revise a paper that they have yet to receive a grade for/feedback on... would not recommend
Um. He has POTENTIAL to be a good teacher. He gives too many assignments as if we are theology majors. I took the class as p/f. Theres like 3 tests and a long double book review. Easily take someone else... I truly don't know how I got this class cause I would never take a teacher with a 3 star rating :/
Prof. Fitzgerald was a great professor to have. I took him in person for HON 3300 and you can tell he is passionate about wanting to teach his students. There was a term paper worth 40% of the class grade and 3 open book tests worth 60% in total. He also gives extra credit opportunities for early paper submissions and participation.
If you want to be stressed out of your mind take this class. If you want to read a 16-page syllabus take this class. If you want to do long papers take this class. His grading is awful. Sweet guys and means well, but needs to tone it down on the long directions and specificity of things. Tests are extremely hard even though they're open book. DONT!
There's a lot of reading for the paper but a generous curve on that and the open-book tests, along with several opportunities for grade bumps. Tests are based mostly on lectures so make sure to listen to them (for my online course the lectures were recorded).
This class is so specifically structured that it becomes confusing. Everything has to be done the way he wants it or else you'll lose points. The lecture are pretty heavy but they go by fast and the entire class period for discussion. Participation will make your grade.
Pretty solid lecture class, has interesting discussion topics and Prof. Fitzgerald definitely has the passion. That being said, for assignments explicit answers are expected. I recommend taking notes as the test answers will rely on them. The mandatory reading isn't that mandatory, and it's only used for the test answers 95% of the time.
This class is TERRIBLE. He is such a try-hard with homework and tests. If you don't answer it the way he wants you gonna lose points for no reason. He keeps you there the whole time. And when you email him asking a question about an assignment or test he says to look at the syllabus. He has 3 pages of instructions for all tests. Do Not take him.
He is so strict about grading. If you answer it correctly, he will still take off points because it wasn't what he said in class. Three take home tests and they are harshly graded. Very confusing grading system and takes a while to hand your grades back. Not the greatest for a core class!
He is very passionate, but is very lecture heavy so make sure to take good notes. The 3 open book exams will rely on them! Overall he is a solid choice, might seem intimidating but he just has his structure of doing things. The class may be more difficult than other theo classes, but he is a good challenge. Will push you to do better bc he cares.
Extremely test heavy. Forget about scoring above a C or B on any exam, let alone the critical paper. Unless you want to read his 18 pages on how to write and structure an essay, you won't do good. It's a theology class, not an English class, so unless you want to suffer, don't ever take it. There are so many better professors for this class.
3 online exams, go to class and take good notes you will do fine. Instructions are extra for exams but the questions are straightforward. 1 critical paper, instructions are lengthy but as long as you follow the specifics you will do well. There are readings but you don't have to do them. He gives grade bumps in different areas.
He's a nice and funny guy but his grading criteria made the class difficult. He is so specific in what he wants to hear from a written response question that going one sentence off can ruin your answer. He also assigns readings that he doesn't go over in class but puts them on tests. If you take him, take good notes and do the readings!
Very strict with grading. One sentence over the limit and it will be a point off. Do not take if looking for communication simply will say "check the syllabus" or give you an answer that isn't helpful. Dry, long, dreadful, boring lectures. The only plus would be points will be added on tests if you use your voice in responses.
do not take him
I loved having him as a professor. You can tell he truly cares for his students. Read the syllabus, even though it's long, because it's very helpful with his grading criteria. His classes are lecture heavy, but he provides lecture sheets for his powerpoints. We were only graded by a few things, which were 3 tests and a critical paper. Take him!!
He is very very nice. One critical paper and three online open book tests. 5 mc and two short essay questions of your choice. Can seem harsh when providing feedback but is just giving honest advice. He provides all his powerpoints and readings. His class was really easy. Just follow along.
Needed a Theo 3000, his was the most interesting. Participation matters, he's open to new points of views challenging his. He seems like a tough grader but he's giving you thorough feedback to actually help you. 3 exams and a paper, opens the exams for 1 week & you have 2 months to do the paper & allows you to do a revision for a grade bump.
He is too strict with grading and he thinks his class is more important than it actually is. He treats us like we are graduate students. His exams are open book but still too difficult to get a good grade. His double book review is also annoying and too tedious. I feel like this class stresses me out more than my major science classes.
Very straightforward and fun professor. He is very clear with instructions and gives excellent feedback on tests and essays. His lectures can be a pain to sit through (especially in a 3-hour course), but he makes them interactive and throws in videos or pop-culture references to gauge student engagement. Just follow directions and you'll be fine :)
Although Dr. Fitzgerald's class is a bit difficult I enjoyed the class and his lectures were engaging. No complaints.
Strict grading, but lectures are engaging. Attend class, take notes, and use resources like unstuck AI for test prep. Not the most flexible, but a solid course if you put in the work.
Amazing class. Learned a lot… eventually. Professor Fitzgerald is genuinely one of the hottest humans I've ever seen. Like, distractingly hot. 10/10 would enroll again, even if just to sit in the front row and pretend I'm taking notes.
So. Many. Readings. But if you actually follow his instructions (aka READ. THE. SYLLABUS.) you'll be fine. He knows his stuff and you can tell he's super into the material. Also chill about answering questions if you're confused.
Dr. John J. Fitzgerald is a highly passive-aggressive professor. If you think he is helpful, it is a highly deceptive facade. To be honest, taking Theology with this professor made me feel further from my religion. Also, his language in emails is very aggressive and he admires accusing students of using AI. I do not like him at all.
Likes to nitpick your submissions. Very tough grader, always add more if you think it's "just enough". Very generous grading curve, the range is pretty massive and hard to fail. Lectures are long, and he gave many unnecessary readings, which I barely read or knew about. Overall, annoying class, but not the worst. Wouldn't recommend though.
Not sure why he has so many bad reviews, but I am currently taking his Theo 1000 class and it is so easy. He makes class very fun- throwing in a pop reference or two into class lectures. His tests are also very easy to pass, especially as it is open book. Even though the readings and lectures might be heavy, its easy to pass this class.
