Easy couse. Worth while experience.
Interesting, can be nice, but can be **** for final presentation
extra credit, don't have to go to class, Concerts
Xtra Credit on Tests, very fair on grading, cool and fun class
very cool teacher just show up to class and concerts
great teacher, very personable and very encouraging
likes Tool, if youre down w/ Tool youre cool w/ me
ok teacher but he can be a total ass. can act like some god to music .
Very funny guy. Very easy if you know what you are doing.
nice guy. easy class. go to concerts write up extra credit concert reports

Does not care what the students think. Gives very hard test. Do all of the extr
Funny guy, good teacher. Great, easy class to take.
Seems to lack the skills necessary to be an effective teacher.

Lectures are random but help on the tests. Read his book and take notes and go to the concerts and the tests are easy. Concerts are manditory and pretty much all of them are boring but three. Do concert reports for extra credit!!!
if you fail this class you must be retarded. There is more extra credit in this class than you can possibly imagine. there is probably more extra credit than actual points in the class. Plus hes a very funny guy

Fun teacher, Tests are hard, Tons of extra credit, Final is an oral presentation
laid back, random lecture, challenging tests. but extra credit goes a long way..

He is really cool. Made the class really entertaining. Gives out lots of extra credit. Read the book, take notes and I'm sure you will get an A.

SO EASY!
Laid back approach. Sometimes has a sense of humor that is funny. Be careful, though -- don't get on his bad side or you'll regret it. He can be "political". Be careful what you say and do around him in class!!!

funny teacher but his tests are long and boring
Don't take music 151, take something else.
OMG what are these people talking about? He makes the class so fun. The tests are only hard if you don't take notes and fully read his study guide. Plus, he offers lots of extra credit concerts! This is the EASIEST class ever. I got an A.
i liked his class. i thought it was easy, and he makes things fun. i got an A as well.
TA did all the grading. testes are eh.. not very hard nor easy. study & you should do average. do extra credit.
kind of uptight sometimes for a guy with long hippie hair
This guy is hilarious. I had a great time with him as a teacher. The highlight of the class was when he scuttled up to the back of a gong and screamed into it for absolutely no reason. I would take a class, just to have him teaching.
Doesn't matter if you take Flood, Warman, or Yeager; they all take turns teaching the class every 5 weeks. At the end of every 5 weeks there is a midterm. Each midterm covers a different area of music. The second segment with Yeager is all online, very easy. Go to concerts and attend class, easy A.
very interesting! pretty easy! you dont have to go to class for 5 of the 15 weeks!!! i got a B without trying.
This class is really easy. You have to go to the classes to get the notes to use for the tests. Cancels class for 5 weeks. I got an A. The only thing that sucks is the concerts so just a little **** or high 1st, or make the pledges go. Flood is cooky but cool.
your there for him
Fantastic! Excellent teacher! The best class I've ever had! Give the man a raise! Now!
eliquent teacher
JOHN ROCKS! he is the best teacher ever.. so laid back and such an easy class.. he loves music teaching music so much that u have to like the class. he offers as many extra credit reports as u wnat.. so garunteed an A. great class take him if u can
Easy A. Go to concerts and take advantage of the extra credit ones. They really help your grade. They are very boring but worth a lot. The tests aren't that hard either. The teachers switch every 6 weeks so you dont get bored.
I didn't like this man at all... Bad grading policy and not a very good teacher. We're supposed to be adults... treat us like it.
Flood is awesome. Easy class, easy teacher.....he's great.
Great time, patient, and well informed
Great class, easy A. 5 weeks is online and there is a new teacher every 5 weeks. Ummmmm.... yeah it's a really fun class. EVERYONE SHOULD TAKE IT!
He's a funny guy tries to have fun, but he's all over the place. The tests are a little hard, you really have to take notes on the lectures. Overall not to bad, good GE course, and 90% of the concerts really are interesting
The concerts are boring, but they're not that long. Go to class, take notes, and you should do fine on the tests. There are only three tests and 1 paper. You don't have to go to class for 5 weeks because it's all online. That's the best part.
He's way fun and funny..but the stuff he teaches is RANDOM. You have to go to class...cause if you get notes form a friend..they wont make sense to you. But class is fun, just alittle unorganized. 3 Tests, 1 concert report.
John Flood is a funny guy. The subject matter was interesting, but watching videos all the time became kind of monotonous. John Flood spiced it up with his humor though. He was very helpful. Go to the lectures and READ THE BOOK. The concerts are fun too if you are interested in the course material.
great teacher. make sure you go to him after tests and re-check your test answers w/ him b/c the machines/ta's are always accurate. i got 10 more points on my final for going in. he's a really interesting guy, fun class, easy tests. make sure you read some of the book bc those are the questions everyone gets wrong.
Great class.I wasn't interested in world music before this class but Prof. Flood made it very interesting. He tied in music to culture and history without being boring. Don't miss class ever or you will regret it on the test, buy the book. You may pass without it but not as easily or as high a grade.ASK questions! Great insites from his travels.
He seems like a nice guy but the material he covers is random. He will ramble on forever about nothing and then say you are stupid for not writing down his personal story about visiting Java. He talks about 2% of what is on the internet and nothing he says will be on the test is. The other 2 teachers are much better. Do the extra credit!
This class is one of the easier GE classes. With 17 units and a job, this class was an easy three units for the most part. You do have to go to class, and should read some of the book and study fro tests. His study guides aren't really that helpful. There's only three tests and one concert report.
You actually have to study for the finals, but other than that, this class was easy. During the last section on world music it's better to not go to class and just read the internet sections instead. Really easy B, you actually have to try for an A.
Class is easy, interesting learning about pop music as it has evolved. Final paper is garbage though, 10 pages single spaced with 16 sources? Come on, not even my 400-level poli sci class is that demanding.
151- Popular Music, Interesting subject which made me sign up, but a 10 pg single spaced paper w/ 16 SOURCES for only 60 pts??.WHAT da F!!. 90% of class notes wont be on test and a concert report you have to do for this class. I would not take this again if i only knew what kind of work I would be doing. thought it would be chill, but it aint!!
Intereasting class. Buy the book. Go to every class. Easy A.
GREAT GUY!! He is a rocker from the 70's and looks the part. Knows ALOT about music and will do anything to help you get a good grade. Use imagination on your final presentation and pay attention in class (or read the chapters) and there will be no problems getting an A.
frikin hippie! he is a good guy but doesn't know how to lecture . . . the class seems to be interesting but once you go it is not . . . if you take really good notes you'll do good. Also, do the extra credit at the end! i failed all the exams but i did the presentation and 2 concert reports and i got a C!
Class is interesting and fun but teaching style leaves room for improvement.
Class was definitely worth taking - easy A. No textbook required; go to concerts $90 for semester concert tickets and offers ec musical concerts.
GOT MY WORST GRADE AT SDSU IN THIS CLASS...CLASS WASNT TOO BORING BUT STUDYING FOR TEST IS UNBEARABLE...TOO MUCH BAND NAMES TO MEMORIZE...ONLY TAKE IF U R ALREADY INTO ROCK MUSIC
cool guy. class was pretty easy. just go to the concerts and study and you'll get at least a b.
VERY easy teacher = go to lectures for test info! This class is EASIER if you're into rock. 2 exams with VERY HELPFUL study guides (use that book w/ them). You do need to know song structure a little (like the beat, tempo, verse - he'll teach you the basics). Also minimal assignments (attending a concert + summing it up = supposedly biggest paper).
The class is called "History of Rock n' Roll."He teaches nothing about rock n' roll. Instead you will learn about ipods, walmart, target, and otherways to download or buy music.Class is uninteresting and a complete waste of time.Nothing he says will be on the test, just read all online articles he posts. They will be unrelated, but tested.good luck
Really interesting class if your into music history! Lectures contain a lot of multimedia like music clips, dvds (VH1 like interviews) and UTube videos, but all relative to topic. Go to class because then you won't have to read and he tells you exactly what you need to know for tests! Final is a presentation or paper on band of your choice!
good professor, test are not tooooooooooo difficult u need to take really good class notes becuase most of the stuff on the test are not in the book (i will be selling my book if anyone wants to but it) he is weird, but funny. concert attendance for hw points are important and one concert paper. 3 tests (w/final)
This class sucked...Flood just talked about ipods, 50 cent and kanye, and whatever artist he was digging that week. We never learned anything about an actual history of rock and roll. he spent the semester talking about the internet, and whats going on in the industry today. don't be fooled and take the class thinking its history of rock and roll
I was so excited to take this class- complete let down. You learn nothing about the history of rock and roll. Flood sucks- the one thing I did get out of this class is he doesn't want us to buy anythign from best buy because of some stupid personal issue he had- I went and bought a tv from there yesterday!
THis techer ROCKS! okaii soo.. u dont have to do that well on test because thres always extra credit! and the extra crdit is fun! final was easy! and u do learn if u wanna! This teacher was preety awesome! and the GA tom is nice to! soo take it !
THis techer ROCKS! okaii soo.. u dont have to do that well on test because thres always extra credit! and the extra crdit is fun! final was easy! and u do learn if u wanna! This teacher was preety awesome! and the GA tom is nice to! soo take it !
I was super excited about this class, but I did not enjoy it as much as I thought I would. The classes were at times boring just taking notes from the slideshows. 2 tests and 1 project. if you go to concerts alot you can do extra credit. ga tom is chill. attendance only mandatory on a couple days.
Super chill, very nice, wants all to get A's, very easy - just go to class, since it was a new class it was unorganized & unstructured, but there's hope for the future of this course.
This is NOT a History of Rock 'N' Roll class - it is more of a Economics of the Music Business class. Other than that, the class was VERY easy (just show up, take notes, take the quizzes and do the writing assignments) and entertaining. John is a chill prof and he really knows his rock 'n' roll.
Flood knows his stuff. the classes are easy to get up and go to and not fall asleep in. I got an A and over 100% on the last final. its not that hard at all. plus its all about the progression of rock n roll cmon who doesnt want to take this?
Easy class. Just show up, take notes, study 10 minutes before the quizzes/tests, and you'll be good. He tells you exactly what he's going to test you on, and rarely throws curveballs. He offers tons of extra credit. This is a great class for upper-division GE, and TFM majors, it also satisfies one of your major requirements.
Prepared to be screwed... NOT! So easy. Just look at all the other reviews. Best study guides (no tricks) and just show up and take notes. Hands down the easiest class you will take for college.
Easy as long as you show up every time. The information he gives in his lectures and online notes on blackboard is what you have each week on the quizzes. Miss a day, miss a quiz. each quiz is 10 pts of total 320 in the class. Easy A, very cool guy.
If you're a real music fan you'll do great in this class. He not only teaches about music history but about music ethics. The book was a great read. Study the study guide for tests. Extra credit concerts are nice. If you appreciate music and its ability to be an art then you'll do well in this class.
You do NOT need to go to lecture, buy the textbook because he gives you a study guide for the midterms and you study from the book. Tests are easy if you follow the study guide. Do ALL of the extra credit because that helps your grade immensely. Easy final, either a short 3min group presentation or a paper. Definitely recommend this class
Class was interactive and you don't have to worry about buying a textbook. You do have a couple of smaller papers to write (comparative paper & concert report). Attendance done through quizzes & they are done at end of class. Would recommended the class, but be forewarned that you will rarely get out early - even for once a week class.
Easy class as long as you show up. You dont really need the book but it would be wise to take notes. He's super funny and laid back, but sometimes he's too laid back which isnt good. If you like music this would be a great class to take, its pure notes, 3 test and a final presentation, oh yeah and a concert report=)
really funny guy. extremely passionate about music which makes the class way more interesting. there's 3 tests which are pretty straight forward, the only difficult part is the listening aspect of the test. He wants everyone to get an A so extra credit is offered. Take this class
Floods sucha chill teacher. But he can actually be kinda a **** at times. Theres 3 test, all based on the stuff he says in class so i suggest goin. test arent the 2 hard, but not super easy, so if u do the e.c. concert reports itll garentee ur A. The final is a presentation. Just make sure u go to class after the 3rd test, hell take off points
not what i expected.cool teacher. but i expected this class to be a lot cooler, and the material to be much more interesting. he goesover a lot of musicians and has several power points but its very confusing when it comes to taking the test and the way he asks the questions. take another class if your not really into music or guitars or ina band
This class is very easy. You don't need to buy the book because the lectures cover what will be on the exam, and the exams are not difficult. To the person below who wrote the wrong concert report, this was emphasized more times than I can remember in class, next time pay more attention. It's funny how one person, out of a class of 80, covered t
im the last last person again, well in my defense i wrote my EC reports early in the semester and nate only told me they were wrong and didnt count until the last week of class. all im sayin is he coulda told me earlier n let me re-do it.. him not tellin me meant to me that it was okay. and lets be real now, flood and nate are both whack. real talk
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!! EC was expensive! u have to drive all the way 2 carlsbad for a museum. Class was very long & full of info that he tests u on at the very end of class. by that time u're very sleepy & u dont remember anything!!! Class was not fun. MUST ATTEND ALL CLASSES. there's a test every class and he doesnt let u out early!
this teacher is one of the worst at san diego state. he is no help at all and doesnt seem to care at all about his students. he teaches what everyone would think to be an interesting class, and makes it the most boring, long and useless class ive ever taken. oh and he keeps you 15 minutes after the 2 hours and 40 minutes every week so annoying
Flood is manic-depressive, and super whack. His class is really easy, three piece of cake tests, a group presentation, and a concert report, with loads of EC. Flood is laid back but pretty rude. Book is pretty much useless if you go to class. I barely tried, did a made up concert report and got nearly 100%. Not as interesting as you would think.
he is a pretty lenient teacher...one mandatory concert report (2 xtra credit) but tests are SUPER hard and are from lecture notes that jump all over the place and are hard to keep up with. you have to catch what he says and see if its worth writing down. test has listening parts that only a pro musician can pass. i relied on my xtra credit reports
I liked the class but not Flood! He's a really laid back guy and his tests are very easy. If you're interested in pop music history in America, then take this class. You have to do concert reports and a presentation on your favorite band.
THE GOOD: No book, only a subscription to "The Rolling Stones" mag.Three test, One essay and a concert report. THE BAD: zero organization, hard to know what on the test. The lectures aren't good. BOTTOM LINE: Don't take this class
I also studied with him privately for 1 year. Poor teaching and social skill. At first seems friendly but there after becomes impatient, controlling, and actually competitive with students who's skill levels are higher than his. OK at basic skills but poor at teaching. Unable to teach advanced skills because he lacks the skills to demonstrate them.
One of the best teachers this school has. Go to class, listen to the lectures, read the magazine articles he assigns and you'll get an easy A in the class. He does a great job on teaching about where rock n roll came from and how it evolved.
He is a chill guy but doesn't teach well. Missing one class will effect your grade on a midterm. He talks to fast and its impossible to write clear notes. He doesn't post or give you an idea whats going to be on a test. Take kitelinger instead hes great:)
flood is a cool guy but not a good teacher. he teaches music 151 for the first half of the semester and is all over the place. doesn't tell you what to study for the tests. kitelinger makes a study guide for each test and puts his powerpoints online. you have to go to 10 concerts that cost $85 if you buy them early and do a report on one
take this class!! its SO easy!!u go to class and take notes from his powerpoint lectures which includes some interesting videos. no book but u do have to go to these music concerts after class. they werent bad tho. based on how well ur notes r, the test r all multiple choice and pretty easy.
Professor Flood is a cool dude! Take this class if you know your stuff.... or if you an audio learner. Must attend lecture for lecture notes otherwise he doesn't post it online.
i took this guy for history of rock and roll. i didnt learn a damned thing. He told me that the band the Kinks weren't a part of the british Invasion. He didnt even cover the 60's or british invasion or motown in a rock and roll history class!HE covered reggae and stanley jordan more the most eventful period in rock and roll history!! what an idiot.
