The class itself is really interesting but Dr. Fox assigns massive amounts of homework so if you have the time to read and write 3 chapters and a 3-page response every week PLUS a couple essays and movie analyses here and there, you should join. If you can't handle the amount of work outside of class, look for another professor.
What a weird guy. Ive done all the coursework for his class but Im still getting a B. His assigned weekly classwork, a presentation as well as a 5-7 page research paper. Very interesting topics however he's a hard grader and you better stay on top of things to pass his course.
Hard but worthwhile
Funny/interesting teacher but assigns TONS of work and is an extremely tough grader for a sociology course. Thought it would be easy but expect to put a lot more work than you would think, expects long writing assignments and to be written like you were in an English class
Really funny and class discussions are entertaining. Doesn't take role and is laid back BUT assigns a TON of work! Not your typical sociology class, and he's up front that he grades really tough. Grades papers like an english teacher! I wouldn't recommend you take his class...
John Fox is probably one of the best teachers I have ever had. The coursework is heavy, like the ten 5 paragraph journals, but you really get a lot out of it. It is also really easy to get extra credit in his class. Midterm was a little hard, and the final was an essay, but if you pay attention and show up, you will do fine.
I found Dr. Fox to be quite good. He was passionate, knowledgeable and very devoted. His workload is however fairly robust and his grading rubric is sometimes ambivalent at best--though he rectifies this situation by giving copious amounts of extra credit assignments (a possible 20 extra credit points in a course with only 200 points).
Dr. John Fox is one cool guy. He is passionate about the field of sociology and it is evident in his lectures and his interaction with students. He is there for students when they need his help. He gives you ample opportunity to improve your grade whether it be through extra credit or paper rewrites. He is a fare grader and wants you to do well!
Interesting professor and interesting class, but gives out a lot of work and is a hard grader so be prepared for that. Wouldn't recommend, especially if you already have a busy schedule.
Sociology 1 - I just finished my second week of his class. DO NOT fall behind. He wants an essay he calls a journal every week. There is a new chapter to be read everyday and they are 30-40pgs. BUT already the class is a rewarding experience. Very laid back. Very reasonable policies. Tries to let everyone have their say. already lovin' the class.
He is a nice guy and definitely a great teacher. Many Homework but if you pay attention to his lesson, you will do fine!!(and many extra credits) His lesson is interesting and fun! will learn a lot in his lesson!!!take this class!!!
Hard but reasonable. Many homework but he give out many extra credit. He is not a hard grader. Just get use to his way of marking, you will do fine!
Smart, witty, engaging, & thoughtful. I learned a lot in this class. Participation in class discussions recommended. A good deal of reading & writing required, but it's interesting material. He's very fair and quite entertaining. Willing to accept alternate views & enjoys healthy debate. Not a class you'll slide through without putting in effort.
Do NOT fall behind in the reading or the JOURNALS. There are 2 papers due in the class which you can rewrite several times, except journals as they are due at the end of the quarter. He is a really good teacher. Very passionate. But he didn't like me. I shouldn't be able to tell. However, I strongly recommend him.
He is a good teacher, his class was enlightening for me. Fox assigns much writing - 10 journals and 2 papers, which actually was helpful, since working on a paper makes you think over the subject a lot. Sometimes, though, he seemed too liberal in his views, too leftists, maybe, but it's probably personal. In general - I had a great experience :)
Good teacher, great class. But there is lots of reading and writing. 2 essays ( you can rewrite them for a better grade) , plus journal entries weekly on the reading, 5 scantron quizzes ( you can drop one), and a final.
It was an ok class, you have to do a lot of reading and writing. 2 essays, and Journal entries for every week. You actually have to do your work and in order to do good you must show up. Lets you use notes and books on quizzes and final. This class is not a easy ride.
Easily one of the best teachers I've ever had. He definitely expects you to put work into your assignments, but the material is so interesting that you really don't even mind. He cares a lot about his students and his passion for sociology and great sense of humor keeps lectures engaging. I wish I could take this class again! It was that cool.
Expect lots of work and about 50 pages of writing over the quarter in addition to an impossible amount of reading. Also hands down the harshest grading professor to date
Although the journals and readings can take up time, stay on top of them! However, John is a great teacher. Always made class and the content interesting. As long as you stay on top of your work, it should be a fun class.
Fox is a great teacher. I had no interest in sociology before, but he made almost every class interesting. My friend had him too and he said he was mind blown every class. It's easy to get a good grade (I got an A) because you can rewrite your papers and use the book on quizzes. I didn't keep up with my journals very well but you probably should!
Great teacher! I enjoyed his lectures because it was very thorough and intrigues me. I busted my butt off to do all his big load of work, but he gives you so many chances to redo them to get a perfect score. Overall, a very fun, interesting, and great teacher! Makes me want to come back to take even more classes.
Great professor! This class opened my eyes up to the whole spectrum of sociology. As long as you attend class and take thorough notes, do all the readings/journals, and follow instructions on the papers, you'll pass. Although he's a harsh grader on essays, he gives re-write options, take advantage of those and the extra credit opportunities!!
Had a fantastic time in John's class! Absolute favorite professor at Foothill so far. He is very passionate about sociology and made each lecture really fun and interesting. Just keep up on the readings and journals, go to the classes and you'll be solid. Got an A, and plan to take another one of his classes soon!
Love John! He is a tough grader but always allows rewrites. Open note and text quizzes. Extremely interesting class- he makes it interesting. Highly recommend even if you don't even know what sociology is! You will learn. I didn't know what it was and this class inspired me to make it my major. Take his class!
John is the only teacher I've ever had that really honestly 100 percent cares about his students. His lectures and examples are so interesting. The workload is tough but you finish the class learning sooooooo much! He has helped me academically and personally is wrote me a kick ass letter if rec!!!! TAKE HIS CLASSES
One of the best profesors at foothill. Everything is clear and straight forward from the beginining of the class until the end.
Great instructor. Sociology isn't easy but worthwhile! He makes a deal that if you put in the hard work, he can lead you to learn something! Go to his office hours if you are concerned or need help. He just wants you to get out of your comfort zone and explore different sociological viewpoints that you are not familiar with. Highly recommended!
Professor Fox is a really good professor. A lot of work, but it is worth it. You learn a great deal of different social view points among different backgrounds. Fox makes sure you read and study the material before coming to class. He does understand that not everyone will think a like but he prepares you for real life challenges in the future.
Great teacher. Very passionate and engaging. His excitement makes you excited (the best kind of teacher). Definately piqued my interest in socio. Short papers based on articles (usually pretty interesting) due every week, but they aren't hard to do. Quizzes every so often, open book/notes, but it's a lot easier if you read beforehand.
He's the type of teacher you want to learn from because his energy and teaching style make it easy to get comfortable talking about the uncomfortable topics in society.
Not a tough grader but get ready to write novels & read tons of confusing words. His class is super fun but after class you have to work hard to complete what he asks for. Quiz every 2 weeks, 3-4 pages of summary every week and online TED talk summary every week. Quizes are very easy if you listen to him andor read 60-90 pages of textbook.
John is a fantastic human being and professor. His class requires more reading than you can imagine, weekly essays, and 2 sociological papers. He loves to teach and he is very patient with the different learners in his room. He wants you to get something out of this course, and trust that he will blow your mind. Do not use your phone during lecture
John is an awesome teacher!
Great
I am quite surprised by all of the positive reviews. One, professor fox isnt nice, he just comes off that way to a certain number of students. Two, he reeks of leftist filth and third, he assigns a rediculous load of homework. It should also be mentioned that his textbooks of choice suck. I wouldn't take his class again.
this man will make you see the world from a different perspective .. take his class and forget about the grade and tje huge amount of work .. it is worth it
John Fox is the best professor I've ever had. He's incredibly knowledgeable. Weekly papers due sounds intimidating, but he really is just looking for completion and effort to understand the material. I never missed class, simply because his lectures are THAT good. This is a class that will CHANGE your life & the way you viewsee everything.
Absolutely the best professor I've had. If you do the work you'll get an A, and the lectures are phenomenal.
great guy, he really cares about his students :)
He was definitely one of the best professors I've had in recent years. Really engaging lectures, and he incorporates real life with the topics he teaches which makes things more interesting. He's so funny, and makes the material much less stale. Requires a bit of work however. Lots of writing and reading, but if you go to lectures, should be fine.
Good teacher, just don't slack off on the homework.
John Fox is a cool cat. He opens up your mind to a new dimension with his lectures and conveys each sociological topic with enthusiasm and clarity. The catch is is that each week there is a 4 pg. response paper and reading is absolutely needed. There is also two big essays. The class is a challenge, believe me! Stay on top of work and you'll sail.
John Fox is an energetic, motivated, and enlightened individual. His teaching methods really work to provide the best learning experience for his students, plus, he will make you smile every day in class. His class on Sociology of Gender was eye-opening.
Amazing lectures and really engages the class in great discussions. John Fox also has a good sense of humor
Oh John is the Best Human on Earth ever! He is so nice and caring for his students:) I learnt life knowledge as well as Sociology knowledge from him ALOT! I really enjoy every of his lesson and would even go there when I wasn't feeling well coz I'm too engaged in his lecture! He's just amazing!
Through you have to write response paper each week, but it help you a lot. John is an amazing professor, he even told me how to be a nice person in the society. If you do all the response paper work, you will pass the class.
There is a lot of reading and quizzes on readings. Papers are difficult but, he allows re-writes. Lectures are always interesting and entertaining. He's easy to talk to and very encouraging. I really enjoyed his class.
He had us write so many papers and sometimes the content never made sense to me but overall, I had an interesting experience with Professor Fox. He does swear a lot so if you're not so comfortable with that then don't take him. It's an easy A if you can understand most of the material and do all the homework.
Professor Fox assigns a number of response papers (3-4 pages) based upon weekly article readings. His 10 point quizzes are simple and require basic knowledge from the lectures, which supply most of the course material and are quite engaging. The course is an easy A if you complete most assignments on time and attend lectures! @RMP_Official//
Best Instructor 10/10. Just don't show up late... he doesn't like that. if you are gonna skip just skip don't be late.
John P.H.D Fox! I love this guy as a teacher and adviser. I had just come back to school after 2 years and he has taught me a lot about sociology. In order to pass the class. You got to pay attention to the lectures and read the material in the readings. This class was a challenge but I definitely learned a lot! take his class!
I did all of the homework and tests for this class and I still got a bad grade despite him not giving me one horrible grade from these assignments. The reason I got a bad grade was because I heavily disagreed with a lot of his lectures and ideas. I'm 100% sure he hated me because I voiced a different opinion unlike the rest of the class.
I think John is one of the best professors on Foothill campus. The material covered was interesting, relevant, and inspirational. The reading is heavy but if you stay on top of it throughout the quarter-- it really is doable. I recommend to take him if you would like to REALLY learn about sociology and not just pass the course.
His Sociology 101 is a rhetorical twist on Marxism. Instead of working class vs. bourgeois it's oppressed vs. oppressor and everything is attributed to race, sex, gender, etc. As other reviewers have said, if you disagree with him on his Jacques Derrida inspired brand of Marxist Soc, your grade will suffer for it. Nice guy if you fall in lockstep.
One of the best professor I have ever seen! His lectures are very interesting and funny. Great and hilarious comments. Clear explanations and grading system.
Fox is a good professor. There are reading responses due every week from the 2nd week of school up until the last week. My class had 3 essays to write and there are group quizzes that he does here and there. I finish reading responses on time and got decent scores on my essays! He allows rewrites for a better grade if essays are turned in on time!
Really great professor with an obvious passion for what he teaches. He cares more about students actually learning something, so he allows rewrites of all papers. Group quizzes are easy, and as long as you turn in the weekly response papers and 3 larger essays/1 research essay, you will get an A.
Best teacher i have ever had. He was the reason I became a sociology major. The way he teaches is very inspiring and he is also pretty funny!
Great class, entertaining too. Grades tough on papers and there are weekly response papers that are annoying busy work. Prof. is cool and laid back, I learned a lot, and was even eyeopening at times
Dr. John Fox is the chillest professor at Foothill. He makes class not even seem like class becuase of the discussions. We watched many documentaries and movies which was awesome. The only bad thing was that you don't know your grade during the whole quarter until it's on your transcript. That kind of sucked, but still super easy.
Passionate about Sociology and has a good sense of humor. A LOT of work so if you are not on top of it, it is easy to fall behind. Group quizzes given based on lectures and readings. No breaks given in an hour and 50 min class... overall an interesting class!
Entertaining class and awesome teaching. Paper due every week and be prepared for the heavy amount of workload.
I loved Professor Fox! Weekly discussion posts on a TED Talk, in class reader on top of the actual textbook, short papers due each week based on the readings (but all you need to do is summarize). There are two big papers which he grades harshly, but allows you to correct mistakes. The final was a photo essay. Really awesome professor, super easy A
John Fox is very caring, and wants you to learn about social justice, that is the theme of his course. Weekly readings and journal responses are required.
Wow what can I say about Dr. Fox he has honestly been my favorite professor ever! He is passionate about sociology and it shows, it rubbed of on me tbh. He is literally woke and I love how his discussions are structured, allowing students to voice their opinions, we would go over heavy topics and was always so engaged. 10/10 recommend Dr. Fox!
I love Dr. Fox. He is a very engaging lecturer and a funny dude. He has a way of resonating with people and is open to talk about anything. Although you had to do a response paper every week, this class is worth it.
Workload is heavy, nice Instructor though, he's funny and reasonable when grading. He responds quickly to emails/easy to reach. I would take again compared to other Soc Instructors. So far, best Soc instructor at Foothill.
While there is a fair amount of work load in this class including a 4 page paper on the readings every week and a Ted Talk discussion (250 words min), he is an AMAZING teacher that makes the class enjoyable. As long as you put in effort it is possible to obtain an A you will fail if you dont though. No midterm or Final other than a take home paper
John Fox was amazing. 2 textbooks needed. Get ready to read and write. Quite a heavy workload but then you have the material to write about so it's very easy. He's very caring and provides extra credits up to 20 points. Quizzes are in groups though. Take his class he's an amazing teacher.
12 essays in total for the quarter. 10 response papers due every week and two big essays. Also very inconsiderate professor. I had an A this whole quarter, and when I had a serious emergency I couldn't get out of, I asked for an extension. He said it wouldn't be fair to other students while still granting extensions to others. Dropped my A to a B!
Professor Fox is an amazing professor. He cares about his students a lot. Get ready to write. Response paper every week, plus 1 big paper and another final paper. up to 20 extra credits. I would recommend taking him for sociology 1 class.
Much easier than Psychology!! Mr. Fox is willing to provide you more than 2nd tries to fix your essays until the finals. He's responsive to email questions & very supportive! There may not be things such as pop quizzes in this class, but in essays he's all about understanding the main concepts between human nature and social history.
I took Professor Foxs sociology class during the middle of a global pandemic and civil unrest. Did he care? Not at all! In fact, instead of being more supportive and understanding, he assigned 13 papers (4-5 pages each) with 1-2 papers due every week! Do NOT take this Professor unless you want to have multiple panic attacks.
summer SOC1 course: ONE MODULE had 2-3 lectures, 1-2 videos, & 1 documentary to watch (for ONE module discussion) w/2 textbook chapters and 2-3 book readings (for ONE response paper 4-5p) course had TWO modules each week, w/THREE major papers for the course; clear lectures, amazing feedback, sometimes unclear grading, always willing to help
I took Sociology of gender with Fox. despite the fact that there was a heavy load of reading (online class) I really enjoyed doing his assignments, very easy to pass his class, everything is crystal clear (he is very organized + prerecords his lectures so there is no zoom meetings) and he is very understanding!
Open minded, thorough, and engaging course materials. True he assigns a lot of papers (2 4 pg papers per week for my 8 week DVC class) but if you are good at writing and interested in social problems, (which you will be) you will pass. I changed my major to sociology bc of this class. Would recommend to any student regardless of major.
Essays due every week, so if that's something you struggle with his class might not be for you. However, his material was so interesting, it was obvious he cared about his students, the subject he teaches, and in our success. He has an interesting back story and I found him to be very inspirational. He can get a bit irritated at times though.
I really liked this class. The lectures were interesting, and taking this class made me decide to major in sociology. There's a lot of reading and writing, but nothing too crazy for a 5 credit class. You write a paper a week, 4-6 pages, summarizing the week's readings. You come in the next week and discuss what you read. Really interesting content.
John Fox is an amazing Professor he is the reason I am, who I am today, b/c of him and his constant push to get People of Color Noticed is what is getting me to Graduate with my Bachelors's Degree in May. Dr. John Fox is someone everyone should get to know not just as a professor but as a Mentor/Friend. I hope he soon reads this, I'm Thankful 4 him
Professor Fox is amazing sociology professor. There is 2 modules per week,if you have time writing papers/module don't take this class. He lets you redo some of previous assignment to do for a better grade which is actually helpful if you can increase your grade. The only downside to this class you don't see ur grade until the end of the Quarter.
I took his late start class and it put me to work!! The fast pace was worth it. He makes you work for your grade, and the content of the material is really interesting. He has great lectures and I had a great time talking to him about the course/ assignments during office hours. Would definitely take again just be prepared to work hard :)
The best professor of all time. Stay on top of your assignments, you will love the class. I looked forward to coming to class every single day, he is so helpful during office hours and makes lectures interesting. There are papers every week but they are not formal so do not let it freak you out because they are really more like thought journals.
Professor John is easily among the best sociology professors on the Foothill campus. The Race and Ethnicity class is beyond interesting and taught me so so much. There's only one assignment due once a week, a reflection of the content given, and he gives regular feedback. If there's an opening in one of his classes, take it!! Highly recommend!!!
This class had me hooked on sociology, and his lectures had me sitting on the edge of my seat the whole time. If you are interested in Sociology or how American society functions in general, TAKE THIS COURSE!! It will also open your eyes and make you more aware of how the society you live in impacts your life. Taught by one of the best professors!!
John's a great guy and obviously cares about what he's teaching and his students. He's got his quirks but they're what make him fun. Great in person lectures and very helpful during office hours. Has you "argue" for your grade at the end but doesn't give anything a grade until then. In class activities were stimulating, hands-on, and cooperative.
He was a communist. Not a good teacher and was really political.
Prof is very passionate about the subject and cares about students learning. Imo it's doable to get full credit on discussion posts as long as you answer all the questions asked on them. Good at accommodating disabilities. I was in the hospital part of the quarter + he worked with me to build a plan so I could still achieve in the class
Sure nice professor, you can tell he enjoys the stuff he teaches. His lectures were super interesting. He gave readings every week with a discussion to go along with it and there were about 3 papers. His class is chill and easy if you keep up with the work.
GIVE THIS MAN A RAISE! Professor has great lectures that are actually interesting. To the point where you want to attend class. He's quirky and witty which makes him fun. Just take notes on his lectures since it helps with discussion questions and essays. He doesn't go back to change your grade on an assignment, even if you fixed an error
John is one of the best professors at Foothill, don't listen to the bad reviews. He allows differing opinions, just not bigoted ones (and rightfully so in a soc class). Amazing, interesting, funny lectures. Lots of reading but it's completely manageable. Very kind and caring.
Enjoyable lectures. A discussion per week, 2 papers, and a written final exam. Not hard to pass with an A if you do the readings and thoroughly answer the questions given while also commenting on your classmates. Papers are also fun to do. Some lectures involved documentaries in class. Overall, very interesting and fun course!
Low key a tough grader. He allows paper re-writes but for one paper I wrote... I thought it absurd he took 10 pts off for something not that important. Seemed like he cared about everyone else but me. Not that compassionate. Gives an unnecessary amount of work but manageable. Glad it's over.
same as SOC1 but 6-8pg honors paper instead of final. Don't assume papers are graded automatic 100% just because it's cc—his feedback is helpful, useful and you can rewrite papers up to 100%—my total grade was out of 204pts not 200 though. John is quirky but really nice—but start the honors paper early bc a diff essay is also due during finals week
Doctor Fox, was a fantastic professor, I truly enjoyed being in his class and being able to learn about all the topics related to Sociology!
As an honors course there are a lot of papers (4 in total). But John is a fantastic Professor that is well worth taking. His lectures are exciting and engaging and he covers a wide variety of interesting topics. Gives extra credit for meeting with him for office hours which is well worth it because he's fun to talk to. Would definitely recommend.
One of the best professors I have ever had. His lectures are engaging and class is fun. There are no tests but there is a lot of homework. You read three chapters and do a discussion board weekly. A few high point essays are assigned but his drop in hours offer feedback and extra credit. The final is an easy in class essay.
He assigns so much work. It is difficult to stay on top of if you aren't planning it out from the beginning of the quarter. On top of that, he is a harsh grader, so make sure you are submitting your absolute best work and be prepared to improve upon that. Overall, an incredible professor who is a really great resource in your college journey.
