This class is very interesting. however be aware it is super hard!! Questions on test are not straight forward, they are analytical so you have to sit thought it and interpret the questions, and then answer, not easy even through it is a scantron test. Hate the tests!!! He is clear in his lectures. Class average on first two tests has been mid-60.

fun class, if you like the material this class is right up your alley lectures can be boring but he will make them go by quick, the tests are very hard, studying is a must!

This class is legit. His tests are very difficult and he has a lot of trick questions in them despite his claim that he doesn't. Hard to fail if you do the homework and the extra credit. The class feels like it goes on forever. Nice guy though. Showing up to class isn't necessary.

He's a really cool guy; very nice and have a nice sense of humor. Cracks jokes here and there. The subject is kind of hard but if you read the textbook, workbook, and take good notes, you'll be good with an A. I studied by the notes that I took in class and I did fine. Great teacher. Interesting slideshows and pictures!

Yes, Freytag is cute, big deal. I would not encourage anyone who's stupid enough to take a class becuase the instructor is cute to take Freytag's class. He's one of the hardest teachers I've had at DVC. Tests are confusing, and tricky, but he's very helpful and offers EC. If you have no interest in the subject, take something else.

Great Teacher, a little vague at times, but like his humor (and he's adorable). I really like the subject material. First test was hard (I thought I aced it~but I got a C!). Maybe his tests are tricky...but I love the class! Highly recommend:If you bring a laptop & take meticulous notes~you will do well! NO PHONES or INTERNET in class~Pet Peeve!

Mr. Freytag knows his ocean but don't go to class thinking you can get an easy A just by showing up. You pretty much gotta work hard to get a good grade. If you take good notes you should be fine! He presents powerpoint slides in class also and that is real key. The stuff you learn is very interesting! Labs with frank were fun and entertaining

Very interesting class. The work wasn't too hard. You really do need to attend the lectures and understand the powerpoints to do well. Also, he offers a lot of extra credit which is extremely important if you want an A.

Of course of course... he IS adorable. But other than looks, Freytag is a great teacher. He understands the material, and knows what he's talking about. The lectures were boring, but the labs were absolutely entertaining. The grade I got was fairly given, so I'm not complaining. Hard class, but it's one of those classes that you'll love being in!:)

Great class. Important to go to lecture because test questions only come from material covered in lecture. Never read the book and got an A. You have to study a lot and know everything in his powerpoints to do well on the tests though because they are pretty hard. Lab is easy and extra credit is really important!

My favorite teacher at DVC by far. Class isn't easy, but he makes you think and he's FUNNY! It doesn't hurt that he's easy on the eyes, but his use of humor kept my attention focused on lectures. TAKE NOTES.

Mr. Freytag is the best teacher at DVC hands down! He is so funny, he teaches really well, and answers any questions you have if you don't understand something. His class is soo wonderful in fact that I have decided to major in Marine Biology or Aquatic Biology! He is sooo amazing! Take his class!!!!!!!

DR. Freytag is an amazing professor. He is sooooo nice,funny and for the girls and maybe some guys really HOT. His PowerPoint lectures are extremely helpful, and I wouldn't recommend getting the text book, cause it wasn't used at all. His tests are no joke so study, study and study. He's a great teacher, will do all he can to make sure you pass:)

Absolutely great teacher. While he may lack in attention span, he is super supportive and willing to help in any way (as long as your trying in the first place). Great guy, good personality, class is definitely difficult but just showing up helps a lot. Definitely recommended.

Freytag honestly cares equally about all his students, & obviously tries to be fair, clear and understanding. He DOES, like any teacher should, expect you to put in time for this course. The best thing you can do for yourself in this class is to study the lecture slides, come to lab on time every week, and pay attention.

Dr. F is a great guy and a pretty interesting teacher. However, I had a bad mix up when it came to taking the tests. I studied every single power point and read every single page in the text book. So I was shocked when I was getting D's and C's on the tests! DONT READ ANYTHING BUT YOUR IN CLASS NOTES. That is what all the tests are on!!

Super amazing, I <3 Dr. Freytag. He is relatively young (and good looking), but knows SO MUCH about his subjects. His lectures are always entertaining, and he is VERY nice. Lectures and lab are everything in this class, so go! Book was used minimally. Bay cruise @ end of semester was actually pretty fun. Couldn't have been a better class.

john freytag is the george clooney of the dvc teaching staff. the guys want to be him and the women want to be with him. but seriously he gives clear lectures, the tests are challenging but not unreasonable. the lab is really fun, frank the lab assistant is a unique character. i learned a lot from this class, i miss it

If you would like to take this class to knock out the science requirement then be prepared to do a lot of work. He is a good teacher but if you want to pass with a C then you should study, show up to class, and do all the work. He is very lenient and gives out plenty of extra credit. I did'nt read the book, got C's and D's on the exams and passed

Hard class but a fun teacher. Two field trips, 6 exams (plus lab and lecture finals), four homework assignments. Fun labs, weird assistant, and lots of extra credit. Never read the book and took notes every day which helps. Work hard if you want to pass.

I had Freytag for oceanography and marine biology. I loved them both and aced them both. Freytag is an amazing teacher that pushes you to do work and actually learn while getting a good grade but it all pays off.The field trips are amazing and you learn tons! I want to go again! you might be overwhelmed at first but just do the work n have fun!!!!!

Mr. Freytag is one of the best teachers I've had. He's humorous, lenient, passionate about what he teaches, gives you a lot of opportunities to pass [HW, extra credit, field trips], &his exams are reasonable. Study your class notes because his exams are based off them. Oh, &the fact that he's good-looking makes it easier to pay attention in class.

Freytag is a great teacher. He explains things very well, and all the answers to the tests are on the power points he presents in class. Easy A class, but there is one test that is somewhat difficult, but the others are easy. If you just do the homework (which isn't a lot) and listen in class, you should pass easily. He is funny too. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND; TAKE HIM! He cares about his students and is willing to do whatever it takes to help you pass. Almost immediately responds to Email. Lets you turn in hw by 5pm on due date (or days late but minus points) because he understands that students' lives get crazy&ish happens. Chill, funny, and yes, as many have said, attractive ;)

John Freytag is a very good teacher. He keeps his students responsible for the work that it due. His lectures are very interesting. He has his moments of humor which helps to lighten the mood. He is good teacher, very passionate about science. Tries to add humor into his dense power points. All class notes are posted on webCT, if you miss a day. Very little homework,easy tests and labs. Mandatory field trips always on weekends and subject to cancelation. Not conducive for the working student. Over all a great class.

This is my second class with John. I took his Oceanography 101 last semester and realized I was in for a challenge. If you like to work hard for your grade and put time into your exams, you will feel accomplished at the end of his class. I'm now taking his Biology 160 with a lab and although there is little homework the material is dense

This class is hard! Has a lecture and a lab portion. Lab is easy, just pay attention. Lecture is difficult. Tests require 4+ hours of studying. Most people study for 8 hours or more. Only 4 homework assignments but he does have extra credit on the tests, homework, and a book report. Sometimes offers random extra credit questions as well.

John is an amazing teacher. He is passionate, helpful, and gorgeous. The only hw is reading or some paperwork in the LAB. Show up to class, take notes, and study and you can get an A.

Class is can be fairly easy if you take notes and attend every lecture. It's not that easy of a class, he does make you work hard to earn an A. But this class was really fun.

He is a very good teacher! He puts all of his powerpoints online so you can go back and reference them. You can miss a few classes and be fine but don't miss to many. There are 4 homework assignments and lots of Extra Credit! His test are REALLY hard!!! He does a review before each one though so as long as you study you'll be okay!

Great teacher. If you are conceptual learner NP. If you like to memorize might be a issue. He has a true passion for marine science. If you need any help he will always make office hours available for you. If you hate science still take him he breaks things down so you can easily understand them rather than lists of names. Highly recommend.

I had an interest in going towards fulfilling a major of marine biology before taking his oceanography class and when the class was over i found myself obsessed with the subject!! He is an awesome teacher and I'm taking another class of his already! He is very passionate about everything he talks about and if you have a question he will answer it!!

Marine Biology was a fun class. A lot of dissections for lab, a couple of lab packets and one big research paper on a marine animal. The tests were hard. Also there are three field trips all mandatory. To Monterey Bay Aquarium, Marine Mammal Center, and a weekend camping trip at Dillon Beach!

Dr. Freytag is hands down one of the best teachers that i have ever had. You can tell that he loves what he does and expresses a passion for his job. His exams are some what tricky (DMV questions). However, he gives decent reviews and basis all material on the Power Points he provides. It's all about memorizing terms, theories and concepts.

I had Dr. Freytag for Oceanography, and he was great! The class has tons of hard material, and he takes the material and spins it so it's actually manageable. He wants you to pass the class, so he'll help you in any manner possible, and there's enough extra credit to go around. Tests are excruciating and attendance is mandatory, but it's worth it!

Helpful teacher. Went to his off hrs daily and didnt seem annoyed. Wants his students to succeed BUT, if you dont study, barely show up and sort of slack off, you're super screwed. Its not an easy class and his test can jump up and bite you if your not prepared. Know what type of student you are before taking this class or you might regret it

This class was solely an IGETC requirement for me. Dr. Freytag is passionate about what he teaches and makes lectures somewhat interesting (did tend to get boring at times) The lab part of the class was hard as it involves a lot of concept related applications. You have to learn nautical time and a fair share of chemical oceanography.

I took Freytag's class in the summer. The class was pretty fast paced, but I feel that I learned a lot of new info and got interested in the topics. Freytag knows his stuff and is very helpful if you have questions. The tests aren't too bad, but you need to study and look through your written notes. I suggest everyone take this class!

Lab is quite challenging. Lectures are snoozeville most of the time BUT notes in lecture and lab are critical to passing his tests. Only three homework assignments. Didn't even buy the book! I HATED this class the first few classes but at the end I learned a lot. I would highly recommend this class and this teacher!

John Freytag defines the Oceanography program at Diablo Valley College. With his experience in ocean science and research he brings unprecedented understanding to his material. Any student halfway interested in the ocean will love his classes.

Easily one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. I've never had to work so hard for a class in my time at DVC. Although, It was an interesting and knowledgeable class. 4 Exams, 3 homework assigments, 3 mandatory field trips (or you won't pass). With lab, you have 4 extra exams, easy homework assignments. Dr. Freytag is the reason I changed my major to Marine Biology. He's one of the most knowledgeable professors I've ever had the pleasure of taking a class with. His lectures are not only thorough and enlightening, but also hilarious. Don't expect his class to be an easy A, but if you pay attention and take good notes, you'll do fine.

EXCELLENT PROFESSOR. I took Marine Biology with a lab and I absolutely loved the class. The lab day is long but he makes it go by pretty fast and the lectures are always interesting and really helpful. The tests aren't easy but if you study regularly you'll do good. I took OCEAN 102 and BIOSC 162 with him and he is literally the best teacher I've ever had. He's passionate about what he teaches and you can feel it during his lectures. He has a fine balance in class between having fun discussions and doing work. You won't need the book, everything you need is on his powerpoints. Lots extra credit if needed.

Oh Freytag. What a long semester. Ocean 101 is something like this: 4 Essay homework assignments. 3 midterms. 1 final. Offers lots of extra credit, (which i suggest you do if physical science isn't your strong suit. I don't suggest you take this class if you need it for GE. I read for 11 hours for EC to pass this class with a B. Time consuming.

His lectures were great, and his jokes kept me paying attention through out. He knows TONS, and is always willing to answer questions to make sure people get what he's saying. His tests and homework assignments are easy as pie, but you have to show up everyday and take notes!! That's the only hard part! I didn't even use my book.

I'm writing this review simply because after of all of my classes/professors at DVC, his class(es) and easy-going teaching style are still in the upper echelon, if not the pinnacle. Whether one majors in biology or not, this class is very fulfilling and interactive. I almost felt obligated giving this review. For real.

There was lots of complaining that he was unfair, but everyone complaining didn't study! If you do the assignments, this class is an easy A. I absolutely loved my time in Freytag's, one of the best instructors I've EVER had. He's fair and offers TONS of extra credit, so if you're worried about grading, there's plenty of opportunities to pass.

Freytag is literally THE BEST! Hands down the fairest, funniest, (& best looking) of all my profs at DVC. I wish he taught more than Marine Bio and Oceanography - I would take him again if he did! 4 lecture exams in both classes and 4 lab exams in Ocean, extra credit on every one. In my opinion, Freytag's one of the best professors at DVC. I will warn you that the workload might be more than you were expecting for a GE requirement, but he makes it manageable. His tests are challenging but If you engage yourself in his class, do some of the extra credit options and visit his office hours then you can earn the grade you want.

Dr. Freytag is an incredible professor. He was outreaching and professional when my semester took a difficult turn, and with his help and understanding I was able to pass. I can say with experience that if you show him you care, he'll show care back. It can be challenging material, but with him you'll feel supported and inspired.

His classes are all heavily lecture based. He gives a list of topics for exams, but its basically just all the topics covered in class. As long as you study, you'll do well. The material itself isn't difficult, there is just a lot that is covered. I found recording the lectures really helped me get better scores on the exam. Would recommend!

I took Freytags class during my 2nd semester of college and I now am entering my final semester at Berkeley in a completely unrelated field, but Freytags class is easily one of the best classes Ive ever taken in college period. Such a great, caring teacher with amazing insight and engaging course material.

Incredible professor. Super lenient with grading and will always give extensions if asked. 2 assignments per week (Smart Book Assignment, 20-45 minutes and a lab dissection) and 2 tests per semester. 2 mandatory fieldtrips (Marine Center and 3-day field trip, transport. provided for both) that are super fun. Highly recommend taking!

Professor Freytag is super nice and cares a lot. I would really recommend this class because I enjoyed the hands on experience. We often did dissections and went on two field trips. This class is time consuming but it is worth the effort. Super fun and amazing. Highly encourage to join!

Not too many assignments besides chapter work, but make sure you take notes for the exams so that you're not cramming the night before. Took both Oecan102 and Biosc162 with Dr Freytag. Honestly the best professor I've ever had. His lectures are fun, clear and really interesting. He's passionate about his subject and has a way of teaching that makes you passionate about it too. 10/10 would recommend you take his classes as I wish I could take them all over again.

He is by far the best science related professor I've ever had. Very understanding willing to work with your schedule to get in assignments. Do the extra credit will help your grade a lot in the end. 3 Open everything exams (besides Google) his lecture slides are important sense the tests are based on it. Really good guy cares about his students

Prof. Freytag is an engaging and supportive instructor. While the class has a fair amount of content, his lectures and willingness to provide extensions make it manageable. I found Unstuck ai really helpful for prepping for exams alongside the textbook. Definitely worth taking!

He was really cool, the class was pretty easy. His tests are open note and open lecture, he records the lectures, but still pay attention because the questions on tests are slightly difficult if you haven't paid any attention. Gives some Extra Credit. Gives points for attending lab and lectures. Yeah have fun easy A!!

Professor Freytag was the best professor ever! He lets you do open book and open note for every exam. He's also so funny and keeps the students interacted in lecture. He's very caring and I wish I could have him for every class for the rest of college. I highly recommend taking him.

Prof. Freytag is great! Tests are only on lecture material and are all open note (including his own lecture slides)! Lectures will not bore you to death; he makes them interesting. Homework is some online textbook assignments and a few discussion posts. Super easy class, made taking science a breeze!

Great professor, and a person. His assignment load is reasonable, and the projects are not bad at all either. The tests were open notebook, but if you pay attention in class you won't even need to look at them. He is a great teacher and creates a welcoming environment that's friendly to learning.

Lots of lectures and you can use the lecture files + notes on exams. Very easy A and funny professor overall
