Loved this class! Took him for all my history requirements. Very easy to understand. Tests are based solely on Lecture so you have to attend class to pass.

Enjoyed Dr. Gaines's class. His lectures are interesting, though he does tend to focus on morbid details. I usually have my mom quiz me on my notes, but she got so grossed out by the account of the LaLauries she refused to help with my history afterwards. That said, if you can stomach stuff like that, his class is great and never boring.

Super chill class. Enjoyable lectures, gives study guides, extra credit opportunities, and tests are fairly easy. Hes very easy to work with. Id definitely take him again.

Dr. Gaines is one of the best professors I've ever had. The way he teaches the class will have you interested in the material. He gives you the study guide to the test. This class consists of online quizzes, exams which include an essay question. Extra credit is given. He is like the coolest professor ever! Love his ties and his laugh. Take him!

Honestly, best teacher I have ever had. I have never paid attention to any history class I have taken before his. He's funny and quirky and makes everything interesting to learn about. It feels like you're being told a story instead of in class. All the weird little things that isn't really taught, he brings up which makes it entertaining.

I would definitely take Dr Gaines again. He provides Study Guides for test and has a Review date. I wish other professors would do this. It helps students greatly!

One of the best professors I have ever had! I loathed history until I ha this class! His lectures are interesting! Attendance isn't mandatory but, most of the stuff on the test isn't on the Powerpoints so I suggest you got to class! 10/10 recommend.

I took this course online and I loved it! There are discussion posts, article reviews, and tests throughout the course but they aren't difficult if you read the material. He also posts videos explaining each chapter. He gives great feedback and is hilarious! Would definitely take his class again!

Took him online. He had 8 discussion posts that was worth 20 points each and 3 tests that were 50 multiple choice questions worth 100 points each. You did have to participate in the discussions but you did not have to buy a textbook. If you did the work its an easy A!

You have a discussion question every week so be ready for that. They're not hard at all though so just do it! Also, the tests were open book so that's a plus!!

Dr. Gaines is fantastic! He uses a free online textbook and as long as you do the work, this is an easy A+. The online course is discussion based, and as someone who normally hates history, this made it easier for me to learn the information. There are only three exams, but they are all open book.

The book used for this class was absolutely the worst book for history. It is not written chronologically which was extremely confusing. Mr. Gaines was great though.

Dr. Gaines is an amazing professor that really cares about what he is teaching. For the accelerated class, there is 6 discussion that each has 3 topics you can choose from. He also has zero final exams, a source worksheet, and 3 tests for several chapters each, and one article review! As long as you read the chapter you'll do great in the class.

Dr. Gaines is one of the most entertaining and informative instructors I have ever had the honor of studying under! Coursework such as the article review is very open to whatever the student wants it to be on, which is a great move. Everything was open from the start of the course too, which made completing work a lot easier. Highly recommended!

I have never been a history buff but Dr. Gaines made it so interesting to learn! Although his lectures tend to focus more on the morbid side of the lectures, it is easily stomached. I would 100% take his class again and again.

Professor Gaines is a great professor. The class is mostly lectures and exams, but he does a great job and making the lectures lively and easy to listen to.

I enjoyed the class, I have only two things I would tweak. First is that I wish attendance was a grade. Second is I wish the study guides were more specific/ similar to the test.

Dr. Gaines is a great professor. When lecturing, he makes sure you know what you have to and dont have to write down. He gives partial study guides for tests. However, you will still know the stuff thats not on the study guide if you pay attention because he makes his lectures so funny and not easy to forget

Professor Gaines is hilarious and tells history like a story. I retained so much. There's no textbook, so your lecture notes are SO IMPORTANT. Don't take them- you won't pass. The tests are straightforward and he has review days to help. Claimed to speak to spirits in class and talks a lot about prostitutes but besides that FANTASTIC! Take him!!

The BEST professor I have ever had. His lectures are very engaging. He is very understanding if you're sick or unable to come to class. He posts his lectures online, and he gives you a partial study guide for his tests. If you pay attention, this class is not only easy but very enjoyable!

Dr. Gaines is the best history teacher I have ever had! He's hilarious and tells parts of history that are usually left out! The class has no textbook and no homework, so make sure that you take a TON of notes. As long as you pay attention, you can pass the class! Great teacher who wants to help you succeed. His pulls everything from what he says in the lectures he gives and does not use the book for anything. Keep good notes of everything he says since he pulls the tests from that. Also remember the weird instances in history he likes to go over those, and they will show up on tests.

You will never find a better history teacher, no matter how hard you try. He is the best History teacher I have ever had. If I had the money or the time, I would take every class he teaches or retake History 202.

I loved Professor Gaines class! I actually have told my friends I wish that he was my teacher for all my other classes as well hahaha. I really liked the way he makes his material fun to learn, lots of times history gets the rep for being boring, but with Dr. Gaines he tells it in a way that everyone can understand.

You don't have many grades, so you do have to study for the test beforehand because they're your only grades. Lectures are mandatory to keep up with the class, but they're extremely fun to listen to.

Dr. Gaines is an awesome professor, and I will be registering early for the history classes that he teaches until I graduate from Calhoun! His lectures are entertaining and he gives you a lot of source material to pull from when you're writing. I took his class online, and it is very well laid out, can't go wrong with Dr. Gaines!

Dr. Gaines was great! Lectures are how you get most of the information, so make sure to take good notes. The class only has a few tests, and you don't have to remember the dates of events. He talks about some more obscure things from history that you don't usually learn about in high school US history classes! I hope to take 202 with him, too!

Great teacher! It was a pretty easy class and he provided the textbook for us online. The tests are open book but can be a little difficult to find the information if you don't know where it is in the book. Overall, he was a funny teacher and was great to take.

Great teacher. His only grades are exams. wish he would give a few extra credit assignment but his tests are fairly easy but you must take notes. His study guides are very helpful for the test. Good class cant complain.

He was a really great teacher, and was always really nice! There were only 4 grades but it was also a summer class. The test were easy as long as you went to class and took notes to study! I really enjoyed his class and I would definitely take one of his classes again!

Dr. Gaines was very funny and made class fun. The first day of class he came in wearing a purple suit head to toe with summer things on the suit. There is a lot of writing but he slows down if you ask him too. Make sure to study for the exams. Definitely recommend him!

As someone who enjoys learning about history, Dr. Gaines class was great. He is an awesome teacher who's tests reflect his lectures. Only grades were the 3 tests so have to make sure you study for those, and the review days are a big help when choosing what to study. I could see how people may not like his grading methods but it worked out for me.

Mr. Gaines is an amazing professor. This is my second time taking him and I have yet to have anything to complain about. No book is needed. If you show up to class and take notes (most of the time he will emphasize whats on the test) you will pass. Tests are so easy if you look over your notes.

Mr. Gaines has been an amazing instructor. He gives energetic and funny lectures during his class times that go along with a slide show, not going to fast and willing to wait for note takers. He is very understanding when it comes to attendance and grading, as he gives us extra credit opportunities and test reviews before every exam.

I can't brag enough on Dr. Gaines. His theatrical lectures and intriguing facts made learning history enjoyable. The random facts are so unique they stick in your memory like glue making recalling information for test much easier. Dr. Gaines has a great formula for preserving and honoring history while also being respectful in his delivery.

John Gaines Makes History easy to understand and interesting!

Dr. Gaines is such a down-to-earth, charismatic guy who loves teaching history. He enjoys giving us other interesting events that happened in history as well, and if it has anything to do with pop culture, it's the cherry on top of his lectures. Attendance is up to you, but it is very helpful for taking good notes on his lectures. Highly recommend!

He is the absolute best! Always making jokes and gives awesome lectures, everything he says in lecture is usually on the test, so show up to class and you should get an easy A. Super sweet and thoughtful, wish everyone could have someone like professor Gaines in their lives :)

If you take notes during lectures you should be completely fine! He uses good emotions while teaching so you will not get bored. For tests, he will usually point out things you should probably study and even makes study guides to go over. He also is quick to respond to emails.

Dr. Gaines was great to work with throughout the semester! He added me to his FULL class last minute (which I very much appreciated!) His class was easy to navigate and understand! 10/10 recommend !

Mr. Gaines is my favorite professor. He is great at teaching. He does a fantastic job of keeping things interesting. If I could take him again, I would. I passed both classes with him. As long as you show up and take notes, you will pass. The only grades you have are three tests, and you usually have one more at-home assignment for the semester.

Doctor Gaines' love of history is evident in his lectures. If you think history is boring, I recommend trying his class to get the drama of the past. I always love to use my recorder, as all of your test questions will come from lectures and exam review/prep. This is my 2nd time taking one of his classes and, I passed both classes with an A+.

If I could give higher than 5 I would! His assignments are awesome and he makes history fun. I genuinely look forward to his assignments and learn so much from them. 10/10 professor. Take his class!!!

I loved having this guys class. I would get a T-shirt with his face on it. He does mostly lectures, with 3 tests in total. His slideshows aren't very detailed, but he talks in detail and tells you when it's something that's important to write down. He doesn't make his classes unnecessarily difficult or try to trick you on tests.

Dr. Gaines really knows how to deliever the lessons in a well-mannered and professional way, all I can say is that he is a great man with a great personality, I really admire how he does the work and how fun he is, defintely gets the class going with his energy. Dr. Gaines is an amazing history professor! He teaches history from the perspective of music and art in his lectures. There are quite a few discussion posts, but they are relatively easy if you follow instructions. He is easy to reach via email too. Overall, great class.

I normally don't like history, but Dr. Gaines made it fun. In his lectures, he talked about history from the perspective of art and music. The only thing I found difficult was the discussion posts, but you'll make good grades on those as long as you follow all of the instructions. I would definitely take one of his classes again.

he's very clear on what he's teaching. He gives three tests, the first two with an essay and multiple choice and the last one is multiple choice only. The test only has information from what you just learned. would take again.

I took professor Gaines's history 201 course for credit towards my degree. I would say that the teacher was excellent and the course guidelines were clear and concise. I would definitely take this course again as I have absolutely no complaints about it. Thank you John Gaines for being a great teacher with a great curriculum.

Even though my class was online, I absolutely adore Dr. Gaines!! He provides great YouTube video lectures of himself, including a funny music video he made. You don't see that often! He was not workload heavy & I was able to finish the class in a few sittings. The tests suck though because they are timed.

Great instructor! Only lecture quizzes are proctored. Weekly homework or podcasts, plus 3 textbook-based exams. Gaines makes history engaging with his love for comics- his unique lectures make info easy to remember for quizzes. A solid, interesting online class!

Dr. Gaines was great! He is very clear spoken. Your only homework is a few podcast with test at the end of them or test on a given map. You only have a few test so that is a major portion of the grade, you are tested on what is lectured so if you miss class you will be behind when it comes to the test. He makes history interesting! Would retake!

Professor Gaines has been my favorite teacher at Calhoun so far. Although I only attended his in person class shortly before I switched to online due to a personal situation he understood completely and was amazing at assigning homework for me to complete ahead of time.

Professor Gaines is extremely funny and makes learning fun and easy. I am taking his classes until I graduate. I never was good at history, like ever. But with his class, I am actually learning and get disappointed when the class ends. His tests are easy if you study. It is impossible to fail if you study and show up for class.

He lectures every class meeting. He talks the entire lecture, but he has his own style to it. He is definitely not your typical boring history professor for sure. We had about 10 homework assignments, and 3 test. Two of those test have essays. He goes over three essay in the lectures and he pick two options for each test from those three.

He seems to genuinely enjoy teaching.

Dr. Gaines is extremely charismatic when he is lecturing. I have never sat in a lecture that felt like a podcast before, so it was definitely enjoouable. The tests given are simple but effective as long as you attend the class. 10/10 I would take his class every time if I could for every history class.
