He is a good teacher for 060, but NOT 080! He stands in front of the board so you can't see. He laughs over nothing, and its creepy. He doesn't care when someone does not understand something, he keeps moving on. All homework is online, about 3 tests and a final. Your grade is based on in class worksheets and tests. It sucks!
Terrible! He doesn't TEACH. He says, and expects you to magically know what he's talking about. I've always been decent in math, but i haven't been in school for a few years. When one would ask him a question, he just tells them the answer! He just doesn't care. I wouldn't suggest taking his class math 080.
Not very good at explaining, cant finish a thought, too many worksheets, so he does have to do examples, Should offer more exams, 3 not enough for this class. Cannot teach a proof, he may be a really smart professor, but just cant teach. and I am not a 19 year old student, i am returning adult student. I would not recommend this teacher.
You do not use the book but do use the online code, you can buy the code for $50 online. I can tell he was very uncomfortable teaching a class. It was very hard to learn from his methods. I do not recommend taking this section during the summer or his class at all unless you are proficient in math.
He is very intelligent and experienced person. There were times when he was having a bit difficulty explaining the materials, but you could still follow through it. Overall, a fair instructor, and he is easy to approach it. Going through the book and the homework does help quite a bit.
Really nice guy. Weird, but sort of funny sense of humor. He is a fair grader. He gives you a lot of points and chances to bring your grade up, but his teaching style is difficult to learn from. He doesn't really explain things. He does mathzone.com which is 5 hw assignments appx. 100 questions each. There are quizzes almost every day and 3 tests.
terrible class to take. he doesnt explain everything clearly can get very confusing and no sense of humor.
i jst took this class. it was pretty easy, he's organized. he doesnt keep going, he reteaches and reviews what we learned the class before. if you attend class, take notes, and do the online hw. u should be solid. 6 HW assignments online. 3 test total including final
He will not hold your hand through this class. If you aren't capable of learning the material on your own from the book and other resources, then take this class at your own risk. He really expects you to understand the concepts, and not squeak by through memorized exercises. Hardest A I ever earned...
Terrible teacher, does not explain anything. He does a few examples and then "claims we are ready for the worksheet" NO... I failed this class because of him. If you like teaching yourself, then take his class but other then that i would not recommend him at all. TERRIBLE!!
The best teacher!!! I dont understand people who wrote that he didnt explain anything...He explaines a lot, sometimes to much. You have to be really stupid not to undertand him. And I saw many students like that. I was wondering how they finish high school with their less than first grade knowlege! I would recomend this teacher!!!!
He's a really nice guy, kind of awkward at times. He always introduces a new topic and then "claims we are ready for the worksheet." His class is pretty easy if you can keep up with him. Just wish he would ask if we understood things instead of moving on right away. But it's not too bad really
Im going to try my best to keep this clean. The guy is nice, but nice doesn't get you an A. He's extrmeley dull and is the only one laughing at his jokes (when he tries to be funny). He seems to be teaching himself because the students dont understand anything he teaches nor does he ask if anyones keeping up. He hands out ws's every 2 seconds. Bad!
Extremely dumb professor.Shouldn't even be allowed to teach middle school. Makes silly mistakes all the time while teaching.Teaches hard concepts in a boring way and expects everything to be "intuitive" and "obvious". He is the only one to laugh at his retarded jokes. Exams are way harder than the worksheets he gives in class and the hw.
he is not clear about what he is saying. he does not know how to teach and makes easy concepts harder. He gives problems on the test that are not even covered in the class.
Awesome teacher. Very clearing what he's teaching in class. Goes over every worksheet with you so you have the right answers and then collects them. Don't really have to show up everyday since he reviews the lessons at the start of the class. Pretty hard not to pass his class! And you don't need a text book!
He is a really nice guy and a good teacher. If you show up to class everyday and pay attention, you'll be fine. The only downfall is the homework, which is online and takes FOREVER to do, but on the plus side its all due at the end of the semester. Would take his class again.
If you have a hard time understanding math DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES. He explains everything in viable form meaning his examples are: A + B C. When you get into equations with several steps and several mathematical rules everything becomes VERY confusing.
He's an alright teacher but, he gets so confusing. i just don't like this class at all maybe, because i don't like math in general.
I was never good at math in H.S. but this professor help a lot and now i am more confident in my math skills than ever before. Never opened the book or did the homework online once this semester. He takes your final grade and counts it as homework grade. Or takes your homework grade if it is bigger than if you did it. Would take again.
He's a very nice guy but his teaching is very confusing. He tends to mess up during problems and that confuses you more. He never posts grades so you never know your grade. His homework is very long and his tests are a bit difficult.
The homework is 500+ questions, he doesn't indicate the chapter or pages each class session or homework will cover. He teaches the class as a refresher course instead of teaching the material. If the class is new material to you, do not take his class.
He's a really easy grader, and as long as you show interest or have any idea what to do, you'll get a good grade. His style of teaching is confusing because he expresses everything in symbols, but if you pay attention you'll get his material.
He was unclear a lot of the times. Lectures are long and boring. His note taking habits seemed to be a waste of time since he writes down everything that comes out of his mouth. He explains too much to the point where he loses his point and becomes unclear, not very helpful either.
Don't take his class. Took his two semesters ago and didn't even pass. I worked so hard and I just retook the same course with different professor and passed with a B. He teaches things 20 different ways and you won't learn anything. He didn't give us our access code for homework till 3 weeks before course was ended. Guidance counselors even say so
1 midterm test, 1 take home test, and the final. Grade is somewhat lifted by worksheets and homework, but there is a lot of it. He told us the final would only cover the new stuff (after the midterm) but that was a lie. Easy concepts in class but made much harder than they need to be. Expect to do a lot of outside class work to get a good grade!!!!
John is so nice. The subject was not easy for me at all. It is manageable if you really try. Two exams, final, aleks homework, and in class homework that is all graded. Make sure you go every single day because it's easy points since he goes over all the worksheets. Lectures are very dull and boring. Also start on Aleks early.
If you have the chance to take math with someone else, do it. This class wasn't horrible but he's just too vague. He's very abstract in his explanations and doesn't seem to explain things fully, also doesn't answer questions very well. His powerpoints that he posts on BB are more helpful than his lectures.
He was very nice and helpful. We used an online program which consisted of 4/5 homeworks of 50 questions each. That was due at the end of the semester. In class papers were handed in daily for grades. You c an make everything up by the end of the semester. Can also redo a test if you got a C or lower. Final was easy if you were in class.
He's a swell guy. He isn't a horrible professor. I can see why people don't like his style - he does go too fast, plus he is also very quick with his examples. But if you pay attention, then you should be fine, and get his style of teaching. It's an easy class if you study and pay attention - the usual.
Nice guy, gets off track by teaching tons of different methods. Very confusing and does not offer much time out of class to meet with him.
Avoid him. Took him and got a D. Took it with a different professor and got an A. I don't know what was going on, but this professor was not good at all. It's like an ongoing thing around Harper, especially in the math department, that he is no good. Ignore him!
Great teacher! He is so smart and really enjoys math. I wish he taught higher level math so I could take his class again. He enjoys lecture so be prepared to listen all class. The class is overall easy if you show up and pay attention. All work was in class, no homework or book!
This class is hard. You get two tests, mid term and final. Then you have some homework that comes in as a set of +40 problems. There were four and one takes about 10 hours. Take this iff you need it.
I feel that Professor Gately does NOT teach the material in a clear and organized way: he will start a problem, stop a couple of minutes later, start a completely different problem off to the side, then finish the first problem by circling something in the middle of the work without really explaining exactly what he was doing.
Syllabus states that homework is assigned each week.3/4 of the homework assigned at the very end. Assigned an additional 30+ problems the day before final b/c of typo (and didn't grade them). Problems on midterm and hw may have been taught in class. Group class worksheet was a waste because we could not learn material in a couple minutes
Attendance was not mandatory but recommended if you want to pass or get a good grade. He does go a little too fast at times, but he is a really nice guy. He gave his students extra time to finish their exams on the day of the finals. Do not take his class if math is not your forte.
Not much to do just learn and do worksheets. Hes very strange and thinks he is funny
Dropped his class after only two days. His teaching style was very confusing to me, I didnt have a clue to what he was talking about. Not helpful either, I asked a question and he responded with the same method he just taught, which I didnt understand. Laughs awkwardly a lot for things that arent funny, hes very strange. DO NOT take his class.
He is a very caring teacher. I did not understand the material at first but I was able to reach out and go to his tutoring session and was able to understand more. Be sure to ask as many questions if you dont understand and he will help you. Also do your homework on "myopenmath" and you'll pass.
he helps to solve every problem and makes sure that you get it. If you do your online homework and complete the worksheets regularly you are good.
Every day there will be a worksheet to turn in for a grade from the lecture. There is also online homework that is a lot and is due at the end of the semester. Keeping up with your online homework and turning in worksheets will help you pass.
Mr. Gately was a great professor. I took this class for MTH065 and absolutely loved it. If you pay attention and understand his teaching style you will pass easily. He is passionate about math and he is a great professor. He makes sure you understand what you are doing and cares you passing. Definitely would take his class again.
You can tell Gately is a kindhearted person but that doesnt take away from the fact that he is just terrible at teaching. Many of my classmates had to constantly correct him in class simply because he is just not prepared. His exams are extremely hard and the homework is just too much. Please dont take him
John is really nice and helpful. My only problem is that I cannot find information on what is needed for tests, homework, and worksheets. There is so much information, numbers, letters thrown at you that one is left scrambling to find time to even find the problems. I cannot find simple information like how to even start a problem. depressing.
he's a good guy but he's not a great teacher. He overexplains simple things and makes them seem harder than they actually are.
I am a highest honors student who had a 4.32/4.00 GPA in high school. This is the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. The textbook is useless: If you are not mentally strong enough to sit down for hours on end watching Indian YouTube tutorials then give up now. From Nov. 29th to Dec. 16th, I studied for 12 hours daily MINIMUM to get the A.
It was the worst class ever in my life. Book is useless, don't buy it or rent. The teacher gives a lot of homework, tests, and mini-tests which you have to type in BB. Awful
John Gately has horrible teaching skills, when you go to him when your not understanding the work he just refers you to tutoring, He is extremely unorganized throughout the semester. He does not use a book one had written notes, Mr. gately also finds it funny when he is explaining something the wrong way. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
Professor John Gately is an amazing teacher who made going back into math super smooth and easy. I loved the way he would teach with a lot of examples and he would pause and ask if you didn't understand and had a lot of different times for extra help if you needed it. I would definitely take any math course he teaches!
I have always been good at math and received As in all my classes. This is by far the hardest class I have ever taken. His lectures do not make any sense. He reads off of his notes but he does not explain why things are the way they are. He cannot teach!! Do yourself a favor and do not take his class.
This professor is unorganized. It takes him a while to even start grading assignments. He doesn't respond to emails if he does it's like three or four days late.
This is a pretty easy class, but some sections you have to focus more than during others. He's very forgiving, I was late to my final and he still let me take it lol. He's also kinda funny, not a hard professor at all. Overall enjoyed the class.
Professor Gately is a good guy, but believe me when I say I could have learned the content better on my own than taking this course. He reads off confusing notes word for word. He is terrible at explaining and lacks the one necessary skill of understanding how a student new to the content would think that I believe every teacher should have.
The course MTH 220 is easy. The Professor went nice and slow into all the topics, and explained everything clearly. The homework problems are for practice only, as the solutions to the problems are already discussed in the lecture, and it is 25% of the grade, so you get free points. The exams are 75% of the grade.Highly recommend taking Dr Gately.
This class was one of the most annoying classes I have taken in a while. Professor Gately did not start grading assignments until the Monday after finals week. Also a Con in my eyes is their are barely any assignment to turn in for points. Only 1-3 mini test due almost every week and tests no quizzes. Responded to emails on a blue moon as well.
Taking this course online was really stressful. I could only learn my current grade 1 week before the end of the term because Mr. Gately had graded all the assignments last week of term. You are expected to write the exams in time and digitally and use mathtype, which makes it very difficult. Homeworks can be managed. He is a caring instructor.
Too much of homework. Exams are tough. Prof Gately is a nice human, but he doesn't know how to teach. His examples are very confusing.
Second B in two years. Literally, the worst professor you encounter He is a nice person, but CLEARLY A BAD PROFESSOR. He gives a lot of partial credit, but exams are a NIGHTMARE. He asks hypothetical questions. He likes to play with letters instead of numbers. Please take my advice and just take this class at a 4-year school. An A is IMPOSSIBLE.
by the 6th week out of 8, we only had completed about 50% of the content, and everything left was slammed at the end. I got 22 pages of homework and exams over 2 days because of it. Professor Gately understands mathematics but appears not to know how to convey it in words and often makes minor mistakes that make the final answer wrong.Hard to learn
Overall, he is a meh. His lectures are ok but his notes sometimes don't even match what he's trying to teach. If he got all of his papers and important info for the students in order, my rating for him could be greatly improved. He also manages to fall behind every single unit by at least two whole days. Exams have been pushed back so many times.
Overall decent teacher, not as bad as others made him out to be. But his Blackboard course page is incredibly unorganized and confusing to navigate. Assignments due the week of aren't in the folders where they should be and he's a very late grader.
The worst teacher I've ever had. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
I take back everything I've said, as the semester goes on he's become one of the worst professors I've had here at Harper. He does not know how to teach, he makes hour long lectures that funnily enough glance over or entirely skip numerous things that you end up doing in the homework assignments. It is frustrating to be apart of his class.
This class felt more difficult than it should have been. While I may not have done the best effort myself, I feel that this class had some problems. He was corrected pretty frequently during class. The homework he gives sometimes doesn't match up to the exam. The exams had so much more proof compared to the homework.
You will most likely have to learn a lot of things on your own so use his typed notes, those go into more detail and go to the tutor for help. You could also go to the professor for help, he has two days where his office hours were pretty long but sometimes his explanations got confusing. He is a very nice guy, just hard to understand.
Professor Gately was unable to teach concepts with consideration for persons who may struggle with the subject. He frequently used verbiage and explanations that were more advanced than the understanding the course provided. He was not responsive to phone calls or emails. However, he graded assignments within a reasonable time.
Lectures are fairly confusing. You will probably need outside resources, like the book or 3B1B videos. In class assignments are too easy. The homework and exams are significantly harder. You should prepare outside class for the exams and the final. It's worth 30% and has a lot of proofs. It seems like he curved the final without telling us.
DONT TAKE THE CLASS PLS
I enjoyed his teaching. At the start half of the course it was slightly difficult keeping up with the material, but that is also because we started with the harder stuff. He's a math professor who's been teaching for a long time. Math is a hard enough subject so as long as you participate and help yourself when needed it'll work out.
Spring '24: Prof. Gately is very nice, but he made the class more confusing than it needed to be. His notes & Blackboard were mismanaged & disorganized, & tests were a NIGHTMARE. He overlooks simple concepts & was very inconsistent. Take advantage of his office hours, as you'll probably learn more from him there than in class. Good luck taking him!
While going through unit notes he often gets answers wrong. Using wrong numbers or algorithms due to him forgetting what he said prior, the class ends up having to correct him which makes it very difficult to learn. The guy just always seems confused during lectures. There's an extreme amount of notes and homework. Please choose any other professor
I don't understand the way this class was conducted. The prerecorded lectures are somewhat decent; but he goes over a few easy examples. Worksheets are free credit. He makes the tests extremely difficult, just to curve the grades later. Final questions were so hard that I googled them after the test and didn't find anything similar. Do not take.
MTH 124- Professor Gately is a terrible teacher. He makes his grading criteria very confusing and continuously changes how much each assignment is worth. He doesn't know how to teach, and his students are constantly correcting him. I don't think he should be teaching anymore and should probably retire. Save yourself DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Professor John tends to correct himself multiple times when lecturing and his notes were difficult to follow. Sometimes the answer that he gives will be incorrect or confusing. He is generous enough when grading exams and gives a lot of partial points. Sometimes he responds to emails. His grading criteria and exam/due dates change a lot.
The professor has difficulty doing the material in class nor is he able to teach this class. I took his class since he was the only professor to teach it, the other reviews aren't incorrect, he isn't good at teaching. He tends to make incomplete statements and assumptions about problems without showing the steps that led to them.
Hi future students of his! The other reviews are really exaggerated. Yes, he's older and trips up sometimes. He's a seasoned math prof. who is just doing his best. Go to class, listen, USE COURSE MATERIALS ON BB, and you'll do just fine. I actually enjoy him a lot. He's very kind, fun, and forgiving. Just apply yourself. I got an A+. Have fun! :)
Gately focuses too much on abstract concepts and never does a good job explaining them, often stumbling in lectures and confusing everyone in the process. He's a very generous grader, though. I suggest reading his notes on your own time in addition to attending lectures.
He has terrible lectures, and they are impossible to understand, only reason to go is to do his worksheets. 70% of your grade is from 3 tests which he doesn't provide study guides for. These tests are super hard to be prepared for, but he does curve them a lot so that helps. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone and would avoid at all costs.
Lectures were atrocious. Be sure to utilize outside resources to learn. There is not that much homework, so the content you do will not stick very well. 40% of the overall grade is determined in the last 2 weeks. The exams are very difficult to prepare for. I do not recommend.
This class was very lecture heavy with multiple lectures a week. It was hard to prepare for the tests.I was confused if this class had an in person final or if it is a comprehensive online exam because both are written on the syllabus so I emailed him. He didn't respond to my other email as well earlier in this summer semester. Avoid it if you can.
If you have hard time with math classes already avoid taking it with this professor. Some people here are going to be like "he's not that bad" or whatever, but those people are the ones who already have a grasp at the material he is lecturing about. Lectures from him are all over the place and confusing. If you struggle with math, skip this course.
The worst math class I have ever taken. The lectures are extremely confusing: he does not explain how to do math, he just writes. We had to correct this man's work 10 times per class period. He assumes you already know how to do everything. Sometimes, he gets confused by his own work. Half of the homework we have is on stuff we never learned.
The classwork was entirely packets but he didn't explain the answers, just filled in the blanks. He would mix things up or get them wrong and then try to play it off instead of admitting his mistake. I had to teach myself everything to do the homework (which was online & do-at-your-own pace). Made me feel dumb for asking questions.
Makes a lot of mistakes while lecturing and takes a while to fix them when you point it out. Not very good at explaining what we are actually learning, half of the stuff I had to teach myself. Not a mean guy though, he responded to all of my emails even though some of them took a couple days.
The teacher answers emails and is generally nice, but the class is very test-heavy and the study guides contained mistakes. There are six exams, so you will need to rely on YouTube and outside resources to do well. Students often had to correct the teacher during lectures, and he focused on abstract concepts that confused most of the class.
