He goes through the material too fast, and the exam questions are reworded, so they aren't very clear and they are confusing. Class average on the final exam was an E, but then that's the class average on pretty much all of the exams.
I hate this class, he is a good teacher, but I am dumb.
Every test is so hard, the average is usually about 60%. If you can stay around that and do good on the labs, you can still get a CB or better.
The class average was pretty poor, though it is my belief that the problem was ultimatly with the class and not with him. His tests are extremly difficult but he goes through the material thoroughly. If you're willing to put in the effort you'll do well.
Goes through class at lighning pace. Tests extremely hard and doesn't seem to care about students.
unless you can teach yourself, don't do it!
not much point in going to class, he puts all of the powerpoint notes online after class. Not interested in teaching. The tests are difficult, but lab REALLY helps final grades.
Hard class. Got an A but you really ahve to read the chapters WELL and understand the concepts very good. Labs are simple. Be sure to read the chapters!

He'll say something completelly different from what the text says
This class is hard as hell, but hes a nice guy, he just moves really, really, really fast.
Biology isn't easy for most and I found the lectures didn't help me as much as actually reading the book and using it's companion website. Geiser is a good teacher and is very willing to help you understand the concepts, so I found going to his office hours was helpful, moreso than the class itself.
Sucks a big fat one. Not reasonable about anything, hes very unclear about everything, and he doesnt know how to teach the material. He basically sucks, take another professor for BIO
I learned more from the book than I did from going to class.
Dr. Geiser has a difficult course and an teaching style that needs a bit of getting used to. He lectures hard and fast about the topic, requiring one to have read the text before hand to get the whole meat of the discussion. Overall, he is very nice when you get to know him. Just make sure you follow his instructions.
Reviews slides quickly, so you may want to ACTUALLY glance at the chapter before coming to class so you won't get lost. Exams are EASY if you do the online quizzes first. But if you want to do really well in this class, teach yourself.
He is a good teacher, freshmen will complain about him because they aren't willing to put in the time to really learn the material, but if you read the chapters & attend class, his exams are about average difficulty. Overall, a nice guy who will actually make you do a little work to get an A.
He seems like he'd be a nice guy outside of class, but he has simply packed way too much onto the syllabus for one semester. A few students have said he goes too fast; it's probably because he has too much material to cover. An easy class once you know how to game the system, but I wouldn't take it to actually learn anything about biology.
Attend class it will help u in the end. Any points at al will help with the overall grade and most of the test questions come from the online quizes. Good luck
Interesting class... minus the fact that he speaks a million miles a second. If you miss class you miss an entire chapter. He really doesn't like to help and gets pissy during office hours.
He was good a teaching the material that was on the tests.
ehhh he was ok
Before I took this class I heard how he is really hard and the class overall is HARD. The class was pretty tough. If u want to get a good grade in this class u have to read prior to each lecture, take quizes online( you will find lots of same questions on the exams), go to the lab and STUDY UR PANTS OFF!!! Do all of the above and u will be fine!!!
Dr. Geiser is overall a good teacher. He will demand much of you especially if you are a freshman this is a weeding out class. He teaches you that studying is essential in college. However, he is fair and a decent teacher. I've come to respect him.
One of the best bios professors ive had. He uses power point and makes it available to students, which very few people do. He knows what hes talking about. His exams are not hard, just study.
Use the online quizzes to study for exams. Dr. Geiser flies through the lecture fast so print out the notes before hand. I learned more by reading the book and teaching myself.
This professor is the worst that I've come across in my time at western. Lectures are long and boring, professor is not helpful and he tries to make it as hard as possible when that really isn't necessary. Unfortanately you don't have any other choice but to take him and live through it. You will be likely to learn more on your own then with him. g
I HATED this class. Biology was never an easy topic to begin with, at least for me. I learned absolutely nothing.
Online bioethics class. Lots of work for a 7 week course, but it was very interesting. Class was easy if you made time for the work. You are graded on whether or not you completed assignments.
This class will require some work but its not that bad. He does cover a lot very quickly but so does every other professor out there. Labs and extra credit opportunities help boost your grade. I must have earned nearly 30 extra credit points for easy things. He's also very approachable if you don't understand something.
If you go to class everyday you will at least get a B. Make sure you ask your lab teachers for help during class, they will give you answers. Half of the test questions are exactly the same as his quizes.
uses technology better than any teacher i have had. he really know biology and does a good job teaching it, but the lectures can be dry
Great professor, demanding work load, recommend for freshmen who want to learn, gives you skills you can reuse later. Use the opportunities presented in class and outside of class (tutoring available) there is no excuse for not being able to get a good grade, if you don't want to study then take another course.
He is a terrible teacher. He does not care about the students and makes things that are supposed to be easy more difficult than needed. Does not answer questions clearly and he is very condescending and pompous when he talks to you. I love biology but I had to teach myself from the book. This class also demands a lot of unnecessary work.I hated him!
Smart Aleck.
He is an AWEFUL professor, the worst I have ever had at western and I graduate in a week. He sets students up to fail; you start off the class with an E, even if you get a 100% on the first assig. you still have an E in the class. This class requires way too much work, I have a 3.8 cumulative GPA but will BARLEY be getting a D in this class.
I fully believe in WORKING for my grade, but the amount of work required for this class is unrealistic. The prof is not an understanding man and he is a huge smart aleck. I am in the last week of classes and the average class average is 63%, a D. During the first few weeks of class he seems like a cool man, dont be fooled. Get out of the class!!
Lecture is boooring. He seriously goes over everything in the book, so if you understand the text don't waste your time in class. Gives out a huge amount of HW for very little points. Extra credit is often worth more than actual HW. He was moderate (I've had better and worse). His expectations were cofusing/high on some of the assignments.
I thought this prof was a nice guy. The class was challenging but everyone knew that it is 'unofficially' designed as a "weed out course". While he did basically just summarize the book in the lecture I'd still recommend attendance because you get pts for coming & he would explain difficult material more than the book. It was a lot of work though.
Geiser is the definition of a professor who could care less about his students. He takes little interest in actually providing a teaching method that is conducive to not only getting a good grade, but learning the material. Everything that was on the test was in the book; nothing in his lectures were relevant. He takes attendance everyday.
Initially I thought that this class would be fun. I was completely wrong. Firstly this class was online so I never met him face to face. Secondly I'm glad. He is far from clear in his instructions and when he criticizes your work he is a jerk about it. Takes forever to get back to email responses, if he does at all. Avoid this guy if you can.
He is really confusing, and you have to pretty much teach yourself because he to smart to explain any simple concept! try to find a different professor
Goes through material so fast because he has to cover a lot. He seems nice and helpful and he is incredibly knowledgeable in his area. Tries to take suggestions on making the class better and records lectures for us. It takes a lot of work to get a good grade. Always read the book. Lab probably raises your grade a lot. Horrible grading system.
This class is fast paced and difficult, but the exams are straightforward. He is experienced, knowledgable, and friendly. The lab grade will boost your overall which is helpful, but the class is not that bad, as long as you pay attention and study. One of my favorite professors!
This teacher is here to simply weed you out, he's not here to help you, nor to lecture you logically. Read the textbook and do the online stuff to study. He takes attendance with iClickers and also has in class group assignments. Expect no help and no curve. FYI, the class average is a 63% as we speak...so for all you unfortunate ones...good luck!
He is arrogant and thinks his way of thinking is always correct. He requires you to do assignments that are pointless which give you less time to learn things your own way. His lectures are awful I got a BA in the class but only because I knew half of the questions on the test are from the quizzes.
This professor has effectively destroyed my love for biology. The only reason to attend the class is that it's mandatory. He takes up my study time for his research, and does nothing but regurgitate the book matter. The only way I pass the tests [that I did pass]was by studying the text. I can't wait to get out of this course.
Arrogant, not helpful. Told the class it's just as bad for him to come and teach as it is for us to attend class.
Does a terrible job at explaining anything in detail. He flys through lecture not stopping ever to answer any question in detail. Literally reads right from his slide show which only has bullet points. I couldn't keep up writing notes so I started to type them & still could not keep up. Assigns a ridiculous amount of homework, over 4 hours a week.
Seriously, i really disliked this professor when you went to meet with him in his office he did not really help so you were basically on your own if you did not comprehend the material.
I'm not sure what the other comments are about. I actually like him. He's a little bit tough and assigns a lot of homework but it's only so that you can get a good understanding of the material and it really does help! Don't wait until the last minute to study and turn in assignments and you will be fine. He is always willing to help out students.
He's so arrogant about his "data" of increased grade results from doing homework that he dishes out so much more than necessary to the point that your grade drops in the other classes. He forces his own ego on everyone and only blames the class for the poor 63% average grade on tests. The textbook is way more competent than him, which is just sad.
Not that bad, I thought that the lectures were helpful and he didn't seem like TOO much of a smart Alec. Study Online. Works great.
Terrible in lecture. Don't expect to learn anything as he reads his slideshow line by line. He underlines words with his laser as he reads. It is like the worst sing a long ever. He gives out time wasting assignments every day. He also often admits that he himself doesn't always understand things. One other thing, he doesn't know how to dress
I really like this professor. He is super nice and wants his students to succeed, unlike many other professors. I do not like the way he teaches, because he goes way too fast through the slideshows, however, he is always giving assignments, helping us understand what is going on, as well as helping us easily boost our grade!
This class had me stressing to the max for the first 2 months, and as a freshmen this was a good wake-up call to what was ahead. Group assignments are usually what's on the essays, and the learnsmart quizzes are the actual exam questions. Read the chapters, do the learning outcomes and you should come out on top.
I really didn't like his teaching style. It was all over the place. He zips through slides for 15 minutes then has the class do silly group assignments (in a 300 person class!) then goes back to 15 minute lecture, then another group assignment, etc. He's very unclear about homework. Just read the book and do the online homework and quizzes.
This is awful teacher. He doesn't care if you succeed in his class.
Goes over elementary concepts in class that don't prepare you well for the tests. His multiple choice questions can have several correct answers, so good luck selecting the one he wants. His assignments are silly, but just do them to make up for the points you lose on tests.
This class drove me away from my major. I would study all day and night for this class and still fail the exams. This ended in me actually crying. His test are ridiculous and he expects you to actually apply everything you learned like you are a biologist when this is a beginning bio class.
His class made me want to change my major. I was going to teach biology at a high school level, but now I can't get far enough away from it. His lectures are holy and skip some key points. If you learn from the book well, then this is the class for you. He is arrogant and doesn't care about you, even if you go talk to him personally.
very good professor. be prepare each lecture and don't wait to study in the last minute and you will be good :)
He is a horrible professor! I have always been an all A student and I worked extremely hard to even manage to get a b. He does not teach anything so be prepared to teach yourself. Do not read the book, its a waste of time. I did it and it did not help on exams. Study the online material and write down all quizzes to study.
His tests are terribly difficult! If you go into his office hours and ask him questions, he will help you. He is more than willing to schedule a separate appointment with you if you can't make office hours. Sometimes you may need him to explain things a few times, but he will explain them till you understand, but you have to want help.
Western's science department is a JOKE. If you are planning on going into ANYTHING to do with science and attend WMU and DIDN'T get over a 30 on your ACT....think twice. Very disappointed with this school. Unrealistic. Class average is a 60% in this class. Glad I withdrew. Not his fault, its the department's. Studied a ton and still was doing poor.
He's a nice person but a tough prof who teaches hard material. He pulls right from the online quizzes in his exams so use them. If you do well in lab and attempt to study, you can get at least a C. Avoid taking this class if you can. If you need it, then take other easier classes that semester since you'll need to do a lot of studying.
Dr. Geiser is not very interesting to listen to, but the subjects are interesting. He goes too fast and does not explain things very well except for the concepts he particularly likes. The exams were unjustly hard for the quality of his lectures. Most of what I learned I taught myself; I often left class feeling like I had wasted my time by going.
He is great and very very helpful if you go to his office. all the assignments are helpful and help you understand the materials. if you do your work and study every chapter and pay him attention, you will be fine :)
This class is defiantly difficult. He does not go over the information very well in class, but that's understandable since the class is only and hour and fifty minutes. Some tips on passing the class: go to the lectures for the participation points, study the connect quiz questions online, and do all extra credit, it really helps your grade.
This class is very fast paced and if you slack, you will fall far behind. Do the online homework and quizzes and go to review sessions. He goes through the slides fast so take notes on what he is saying rather than what is on the screen. If you put in a lot of time you can do good. Lab is fairly easy.
Yes the class is rather difficult, but what do you expect in a molecular biology course? He's a great teacher and his tests are not that hard. If you do all the connect, you'll notice about half the questions on there are repeated on your exams. He lets you drop your worst exam grade, & the HW is exam essay questions too. Study and you'll be fine.
He is a great professor and willing to help anybody. it is not an easy class, you have to study hard and you will be fine!
Standard lecture hall type class, therefore get ready to teach yourself the majority of the information. He hands out an absolute boat load of assignments so be sure to check e-learning regularly or you'll miss an assignment due date. Hands out extra credit assignments often. He is NOT a bad professor or a bad person, it's just the type of class.
Be prepared for busy work and a unimaginable level of pointless assignments, also doesn't cover material very well in lecture
I've had 150 credits & this class takes the cake for most useless. You teach yourself, he gives tons of hw that isn't like the tests, & you learn 12 chapters of material only to be asked 25 multiple choice questions that all have 2 correct answers. Sad since I need to know this material. He doesn't teach; reads off slides w/ too many pics. Lazy.
This class honestly made me realize I was not cut out for a biology major. Some of the readings were so confusing, and class was so boring I couldn't stand to be there. Sadly I didn't realize this until it was too late to drop. #C'sGetDegrees, I guess...
Professor Geiser is very easy to talk and willing to work with you to help you understand material and projects. He is also very knowledgeable and his lectures are very comprehensible. Ask questions when you are confused and he will clarify!
He's a great guy. If it weren't a lecture type of class he would be a lot better rated. Great at office hours and not out there to fail you. Generally interested in taking care of the students. It's college, so there is work. Had a decent amount of exams and homework, but it was overall a good class and good instructor. Go to office hours! Helpful!
Professor Geiser assigns a lot of "at-home" assignments along with many in-class group assignments. He doesn't grade them for content though, just completeness. Also, he is very knowledgeable about the subjects that he teaches and can easily convey that knowledge to students. If you show up to lecture, take some notes, and study, you will be fine.
Very lecture heavy and moves fast. You are required to complete online reading from the textbook and complete concept checks on what you read. He expects you to take notes from the reading. Do not expect to take detailed notes in class. Expect occasional pop quizzes, most are only for credit. Study for the tests, they are kind of challenging.
He is a very heavy grader and it's almost impossible to do well on his exams, even following his study tips in the syllabus. He is a hard grader on assignments that do no matter, and then you never get the assignments back to study from. If you take his class, expect to teach yourself and not learn much.
Lectures are marked by attendance, but you will learn next to nothing during lecture. You teach yourself all the material. Tests are compromised of questions from the text and almost nothing from lecture. Many of the group assignments will be on the exams as essay questions. He is very vague and confusing during lecture; take with a different prof.
Avoid this guy at all costs. I've never had a prof. as bad as this guy. DOES NOT GIVE A STUDY GUIDE BEFORE ANY EXAM. more than half of my class is failing right now because nobody knows what to study. take my word for it and do not take a class with him.
Highest exam class average was a 54%. Does not give study guides. Lectures too fast and then lets class out early. To do well on exams, study and know everything from the book. Lectures cover only a small fraction of what will be tested. Do all the extra credit and all the assignments, each point counts when exams are this hard. Avoid if possible
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR. He is vague on material; you will teach yourself everything. Exams are quite hard and most of the questions are on details that Geiser will not cover in class. Probably the worst professor I have ever had.
This course is NOT easy. However, it's not impossible to do well if you are willing to teach yourself the majority of the material. The tests are difficult (the worst score is dropped) and you must study the material outside of what's given in class. Don't expect to do well if you aren't ready to put a considerable amount of time into this class.
I am majoring in biomedical sciences, and this class was by far the worst I have had to take. I did not skip a single class, I read each chapter before class, I completed every assignment, and I took a zillion pages worth of notes- yet I failed every exam he gave us. The majority of my classmates were failing the exams as well. Try your best.
This class is a very self taught class, lectures are marked with attendance as well. I clicker questions everyday will help you think about what to study for the exam, when asked for a study guide Geiser laughed and said he didn't want to limit our knowledge? Go to class, he hands out in class assignments due before you leave.
Awesome professor, really passionate about bio. Very caring. However, this material is hard and you will for sure work hard for a good grade. Lots of in-class group work, so you do need to come and have a clicker. Lots of wiley usage. I've never tanked on exams so bad & I am a good test taker. I got Es thru Bs on exams and finished with a BA tho.
This class is unreasonable. He doesnt give study guides and practically says to read the chapter over & over to study. I think his intention is to make sure students understand the material, but doesnt realize he is putting students in the position to JUST PASS, cram what you can in your head, and then when you leave you forget everything anyway
This guy is by far the worst professor I have ever had. He gives us so much homework that we don't have time to study. His assignments are 1500 word essays worth 5 points. He gave everyone a 4/5 because no one cited. When we asked him about it he told us that "I did not tell you because I knew you wouldn't do it anyways". Bad professor!!
This professor seems very nice to begin with. HE IS NOT. He grades things harder than any professor I have ever had. He failed me on an assignment for uploading it as a .png file instead of a .jpg file. All of his assignments take 2+ hours and are worth from 5-10 points. Do not take this class!!
This class will make you work hard! Dr. Geiser is a tough grader and the material is not easy. However, it is not impossible to do well in the course. Your lowest test score is dropped and there are extra credit opportunities offered. If you are willing to put in a lot of time and effort into this course, you will succeed!
Dr. Geiser comes across as easy going, but his grading is anything but. He is super strict on citations, and he will give you a zero on assignments you spent hours on if your citations are not perfect. Tests are difficult but not impossible. Your lowest test score is dropped and a 3% bonus given if you do all the extra credit.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. He will give a 0 on an assignment for any little reason. Lecture and book seldom have anything to do with the exams. I clickers and group work every class so ALWAYS SHOW UP
This professor really seemed to care about us doing well, but he got really touchy on citations. It was kinda weird how serious he was about mistakes in citations. If you didn't cite things or meet his citation requirements, he'd give you a zero on important papers. Print powerpoint notes and don't study off of Wiley too much. It's too in depth!
Most condescending & unreasonable professor Ive ever had. I took him online & he hates when you email him & he finds ANYYYYY little reason to take off points. Hes weird about citations & will give you zero points for a missing a missing page number that you spent a couple hours working on. His grading is inconsistent. Smart, but no. Avoid.
Lots of lengthy, unnecessary papers. These papers are mostly a waste of time and you wont learn from them. Strict citations and APA format. No study guides given for exams.
I honestly have never disliked a professor as much as I have disliked him. His exam questions did not make any sense. He words the questions so that if you don't think like him, it is challanging to determine the answer. Look over your exam and ask him why your wrong, could earn points back. Content is not hard but will make you hate the clase.
Dr. Geiser, though a great man who wears sick sandals, grades hard for no reason. He gives the false implication that he wants you to do well and that no question is stupid, yet makes you feel stupid for asking a question. He gives you a zero if you are missing a comma in your citation. He gives you a zero if you breathe incorrectly.
Dr. Geiser is the worst. There are tons and tons of useless and overly complicated assignments. I would put a few hours into an assignment but if a citation was wrong by like a comma then he would give no credit for the assignment. His exams were incredibly difficult too, the class average was never more then 55% on the exams.
He grades strictly on APA format just make sure to know exactly what that is. It is a weed out class, and he doesn't teach anything in lectures, maybe shows you the animations in the textbook. His assignments are worth wayyyy too much and there are probably 40 throughout. Take it with someone else, the coursework is ridiculous for basic material.
If you have an option not to take a class with him. DON'T. Here's your warning.
this professor is TERRIBLE!! he doesnt know how to teach after 25 years, he shows pictures and videos for the whole hour with no content. He hands out assignment that are due at the end of class DURING lecture so you cant take notes. He takes pride in his E average exam scores and gives you a 0 if apa citations a off by a period
He wants his students to succeed. His intentions aren't to hurt people's grades. If your a lazy student that doesn't like to work, this class is NOT for you. I would take this professor again because he offered lots extra credit which helped my grade. I got a CD, E, and E on the exams. I got a CD on the final exam and passed the course with a BA.
Great person, but the class itself was not.
During this bioethics course, often had different views from the professor and you will get marked down fro that. A lot of work for such a short semester and is a tough grader.
I will not take him again. You would ask him a question and he will basically tell you to figure it out. He is very rude. He would make you feel dumb. If you could take the course with another professor.. DO IT!! The work load was hard. He is a tough grader.
Not sure why Dr. Geiser is given such a poor rating here, he responds to emails just fine and is very helpful. Discussions (50%) and essays (50%), no exams or quizzes which is really nice for a summer class. APA is a must-know skill for grad school, he's not being picky, you should know how to use APA by now. Put the time in and you'll be fine.
He gives you a zero for having the incorrect citations. You can have everything right but If the citations are wrong you'll receive a zero. He's very condescending and not understanding. He gives very vague directions on assignments, and rarely answer emails. 70% of his class is failing every semester because of harsh grading.
this professor grades basically only on APA format and doesnt care if you do great on the assignment. expect to fail lots of assignments even if you do everything right. he is incredibly rude and condescending, he pretends he is here to help, but if you actually try to get help youll end up feeling terrible about yourself. get a different prof!!
Dr. Geiser is one of the worst professors I have ever had. Any mistakes in APA formatting will result in a zero on the whole assignment. Don't expect to submit any assignment late it will be a zero. Don't ask for help. Doesn't help at all with questions, you email him he'll give the shortest answer ever with no help. Do not recommend.
I want to believe that Dr. Geiser is well intentioned, however his class is terrible. He makes everything much more challenging than it needs to be. I have never struggled as much in a course with such basic material. His grading does not reflect knowledge, rather APA formatting. Luckily, most of our assignments were not graded by him.
He does not actually want to teach you, he expects you to teach yourself.
Hes so condescending he wont answer your questions if you ask. You could work so hard on an assignment and get everything right but if your citation or references are wrong you automatically get a zero on the assignment no matter what. Do not take this class this professor does not want you to pass thats for sure
He's well-intentioned, and I understand he works hard to make things clear and accessible, but he ends up making things harder than they need to be - for us and himself. The amount of content on his elearning page is overwhelming (why is the syllabus split up?) and I cry myself to sleep knowing an assignment I worked hard on will receive an F.
Hes disrespectful towards students and wont answer and questions clearly, its like a puzzle with him. Get one wrong thing in APA and its a 0. You can spend hours on an assignment and still get a 0. Be warned
He makes this so hard for no reason. It is clear that he does not really care about the mental health of his students amid this pandemic and he makes it really hard for me to even want to do well in his course, not to mention that he grades unnecessarily hard and the assignments are already difficult. He's the only prof for this course too. Sucks.
He should be fired! I asked him for help and he ignored me. I spent 10 hours on an assignment and because I got 1 citation wrong, he gave me a zero. I turn all assignments in early so that I can get the help I need and he says the same thing didnt follow directions. I ask him to be more detailed with this reply and he sends the same message over
One of those professors that makes me sad for the future. The most condescending and rude teacher/person I have ever encountered. If you make the mistake of taking his class, don't even bother wasting your time asking for help, you won't get it and he'll make you contemplate life decisions. He "does a lot of work, not to do the work"(Geiser, 2021).
With my semester not even being over with, I am in fact already over this professor. He does not help you at all and gives a zero on the whole assignment for not putting your citations on a separate page. Be prepared for a lot of stress, and if you think you did something right he most likely will say you did not.
If you are a Biomed, Bio, PA major then take this class. It may be hard, but it will be beneficial to you in the future. This professor in my opinion is not helpful when emailing. He was rude to me and made me feel dumb for asking the question. Make sure you TRIPLE check your hw before turning it in, he is picky with everything
Hardest grader I've ever had. If you don't put citations and references in EVERY SINGLE ASSIGNMENT, you will get a zero. Half the time I didn't even use a reference but had to put one down or I'd get a 0. There is so much due every week. He tries to be helpful but makes me feel so stupid when I ask questions. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong
Even if you are an A student, you will struggle to maintain a passing grade in the course. He gives you failing grades on your assignments even if all the content itself is correct... if your citations have one little mistake, automatic 0. He doesn't respond to emails, and this is difficult when you are simply just trying to meet his expectations.
He is so DISRESPECTFUL. Just because he is a doctor he thinks so highly of himself and never makes an effort to help his students. Don't even bother to ask him for help. If you ask about a grade he will just tell you, you did not follow instructions. He will give you a zero for just any minimal mistake you make. The worst professor in Wester
Professor Geiser was a very fair professor in my opinion. He stated various times throughout the semester that we needed an APA formatted reference or citation for every assignment. The individual assignments were difficult at times, but if you ask questions and go to office hours he will respond and be very helpful!
Worst professor I've ever had. He is extremely condescending and makes you feel like you know nothing. I was told I cheated on an assignment when I did not. I will never take another class with him as long as I am at Western. He makes the entire biology department look horrible. Would not recommend at all. Save yourself while you can!
By far one of the most stressful classes I have ever taken. Geiser gives 0s out for ANY citation mistake, and he also loves to give low grades while refusing to tell you why he did so. Upwards of 20 assignments a week, and anything less than 100% will drop your grade. He's condescending during office hours and over email. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Good Luck. 15-20 assignments a week just for his class, most of them have a minimum of 500 words, and it is so overwhelming that I am too intimidated to learn. unfortunately this will be my second time dropping the class.
Dr. Geiser is very condescending and quite disrespectful honestly. He's very unapproachable and shady for no reason. He makes you feel small and dumb for not knowing things he didn't himself teach. He get upset because nobody comes to his office hours, but maybe people would come if he wasn't so condescending and backhanded.
Professor Geiser knows what he is talking about. He is very clear in his rubrics, and in his expectation to know APA. However, as a 4.0 student, this was THE worst classes I've ever taken. He is rude, prideful, and very delusional. The amount of perfect work required is the amount it takes for four classes. I got an A, but at the cost of my soul.
So I already reviewed, but I wanted to add that you need to utilize the students that are there to help with lab. You will be assigned to one, and you can ask them questions, or CC them on emails. One of the only reasons I got through this class was their help and back up. Plus they totally get that Geiser is nuts which is helpful to one's sanity.
His rubrics are fairly clear, however, if you screw up even a little bit, your grade will suck. I got a 50% on an assignment, sent an email because I DID meet the requirements VERY obviously, and stated that I wanted to have a discussion about my grade, and he was not willing at ALL. Very close-minded and rude, and forgets we take other classes.
He thinks he knows everything, and when you ask for help he sends you a one sentence email saying that you need citations. But for what, something Ive been learning in biology classes for years.
Super strict about silly things. The class material itself isn't hard but I'm struggling to pass because of how he grades. Make sure you know how to cite everything even if you didn't get it from anywhere and its common knowledge. Also if theres a word count he does count the words and will fail you if you don't hit it.
He should be fired. Every other comment is very accurate.
The material this professor gives us is easier than my high school biology classes. The assignments are ridiculously easy but there is a lot to do in the week. He is a terrible person and very disrespectful. Don't ask a question he will make you feel dumb. If I were you I simply would avoid him as a professor and pick a different class.
Honestly one of the worst professors Ive ever had. He assigns so much work, three times the amount of any other class. When I asked about why I got a bad grade on an assignment he sent me a condescending email. When I turned an assignment if 4 minutes late (yes my fault) because I worked till one am the day before he gave me a 0. No compassion.
Doesn't teach you anything. Barely gives feedback. Will give you a zero if you miss a citation. Sends out letters from the future that don't have any relevancy towards the subject. Needs to be fired or should never teach again.
Be prepared to spend about 20 hours per week on this class alone. Tons of homework, much of which is at the graduate level. A lot of essays to write and he wants all your research to be based on peer-reviewed articles. Very hard grader, too. Unfortunately, I have him again next semester, but he's the only one available for the class I need. :(
Literally the WORST professor I've ever had in my 3 years at western. Be ready to spend 12 hours MINIMUM on this class alone. The work load is insane, equivalent to 3-4 classes worth. Recommend taking this class when your only taking 2 other class. You're other class grades will suffer immensely. Also Geiser is hella rude. Overall, everything sucks
Was very rude and did not help when he said he was there to help. Minimum of 20 assignments a week. You get 0 points if you don't use citations or references. Also, get marked down if your sources aren't the textbook or peer review article. I would never take a class with him again. You need a lot of free time for this class.
I am a straight A student, had a 4.0 last semester (first semester in college), and I am failing. I have to drop this class to save my GPA. The most condescending person Ive ever met. Ive gotten multiple zeros on assignments because of typos in my APA citation. I have been wrongfully accused of cheating and received a zero because of it.
WORST EVER He expects you to only be enrolled in his course and poor your entire schedule into his class. He is disgustingly disrespectful ,rude &overall just a smug jerk. He even stated once "I can't come down to your level, so you need to be asking things that are up to par with my level". He doesn't even teach - should be fired. WMU do beter!
Just don't take any class with this man. He is very rude I asked for help several times and he basically told me read the directions even though I read them several times and still did not understand. Don't make an APA format error because your whole assignment that you spent hours on will become a 0. You get at least 20 assignments a week.
I hope I can save some people about to take this course at Western. It has become notorious for being impossible for many good students. I spent many hours a week for the various assignments we had, to receive 0% just because of a minor error. Geiser is a complete jerk and does nothing to help you either. Western needs to provide another option.
He answers his emails with one sentence and therefore is NOT helpful outside of class whatsoever (makes it even harder when class is online). TOUGH grader. Make sure you are super confident in APA format because he will give 0s for really small reasons (i got a zero on a 40 point paper for forgetting a comma in an in text citation).
Class has given me the worst anxiety& burnout. This professor does not teach anything and demands so much. He is extremely rude and full of himself. Has no idea how to be a leader. I am typically an A/B student, but have prepared myself to fail this term& pray I can retake with another teacher. Trying to find a way so WMU knows how crappy he is.
he was terrible and eectremely rude
I would not retake this class with this professor. He is rather extremely difficult, and does not care. If you ask him questions, he is quick to belittle you in anyway. He give zeros for the most abuts things. There has been times where I have corrected assignments, and received an even lower grade. Than the initial one. Don’t take his class.
terrible professor. RUN!!! Hopefully Western gets smart and looses the guy. I'm pretty sure he only teaches one course. He is so full of himself, I don't know how he can look himself in the mirror and claim he is a "teacher"....does he know he isn't a real doctor?
Absolutely terrible! Very ashamed that Western allows this man to teach and terrorize so many students every year. The only positive about working with geiser is it makes you realize that there is at least one person in this world who lives a more miserable life than you... his wife
Dr. Geiser is very clear about what he wants from you in the beginning of the course. HOWEVER, that does not mean that he is easy about it. I am an A student, and in the honors college, and let me tell you, this was the hardest course I've ever taken. He is a very harsh grader, and will often mark you down for small mistakes.
Honestly, this class ruined my semester. I am a 4.0 student and getting an A is more than possible but be prepared to give up everything you enjoy in life to do it. The prof isn't very helpful and overall, the assignments are numerous and demanding. Would not recommend unless required for graduation.
I know that most students take his class because it is mandatory. I took it because of that and let me just say he is horrible, I have been doing the assignments with out missing a thing but he has a huge issue with grading badly when students make mistake even on a single citation/reference. Good luck tho
do your best to avoid him at all cost 0/10 very disappointed WMU has not done something about him It has been brought to the chair's attention
The professor for this class is not a fun person to deal with when you need help! On the other hand his TA's are amazing and will not grade as harshly as he does! I passed this class because of the TA's help! Please go to them if you are struggling!!!!! Also make sure you do every single assignment because every bit of points helps in this class.
I had to drop this class because there was no way I was going to pass. This man will do anything he can to make sure you don't get a good grade. The TA's are very nice and will do their best to help you, but "professor" Geiser will make you feel bad for asking questions and then ridicule you for not knowing how to do his homework. Avoid!!!
He's obviously very smart, he's always passive-aggressive in his emails. He grades very hard because if your citations are wrong, you get a 0 for the whole assignment. There are about 15 things to do a week for this class and it's overwhelming. He wastes his online lectures telling us how we do everything wrong instead of teaching anything.
This professor is not goo. Like everyone says he is impossible to email as I've emailed him three times for this class and he responds in one word answers. His grading also stinks. I don't know why I got some answers wrong on my assignments. The only reason I have an A is because of our TA helping us on our textbook and our labs prepare to fail.
I will give it to Professor Geiser, he is very smart in the field of biology, however, he is a terrible professor. He grades outrageously hard, if you have even a small slip up on a citation/reference, you will lose points or even get a zero on the assignment. I'm usually an honors/dean's list student, and now I'm scared I may actually fail a class
Well-learned in biology, horrible teacher, extremely passive-aggressive, poor communication, extremely tough grader, spends every lecture ridiculing the class w/out teaching, has ~40 minutes of video a week. That's all he gives you, obscene amount of work with little help. You will spend most of your time on this class, AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
Avoid at all costs. Geiser does not teach anything in this class but expects you to know all material like the back of your hand. Very hard grader and his email responses and rude and not clear. The amount of assignments each week is crazy, and you will put hours of work into one assignment just to fail because you forgot a period in a citation.
WORST!!!!!! WMU SHOULD REMOVE HIM AT ALL COSTS! DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES!!
DO NOT RECOMMEND
NEVER TAKE CLASSES WITH HIM. This man ruined my life for a whole semester. He doesn't care about his students, especially the females in class. I was ridiculed for asking for help. The whole point of being a "professor" is to teach your students, he does not teach anything. All I learned from this course is how NOT to treat people. Stay far away.
I took two classes with him, you have to word your emails in a certain way in order to get good responses and his grading is confusing however if you put in the work you'll at least do okay. He curves your overall grades which helps. He is not available past 12 on Fridays until Monday so get your work done before then. Has very high expectations.
This class was by far the hardest class I have ever taken (Bio major with 5 classes left until graduation). I am neutral on recommending this course. It wasn't fun, but if you do take it, be prepared to put in 12+ hours a week. You will come out much more disciplined. Taking this course will benefit you in the long run. No exams but TONS of hw.
Lots of course work due every week. Referencing style mattered more than content of discussions and papers. Was not helpful in answering questions through email.
I took his class fully online during the summer and as long as you follow his rubrics and make sure your citations are correct, this class is not too difficult. This course was homework heavy with a final project. Do not wait last minute to start homework assigned.
Whomp Whomp!
He is the worst professor I have ever had. He doesn't teach. He just expects you to know everything. I get scared to email him because he doesn't respond and gets really mad. His homework is super impossible and cares more about citations than material. If you forget a period you will get a zero. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Hates females. DO BETTER WMU.
Avoid this class at all costs. Professor Geiser is a tough grader who gives obscene amounts of work with little support. unstuck study and the TA are essential for surviving this course.
Definitely a challenging course. Amount of assignments expected in a week is unreasonable, even in a class set up for students pursuing rigorous careers. Disrespectful and unprofessional interactions. Does not seem to be in touch with student workloads; it drains you of motivation to do well because he seems to be against you. He is an obstacle.
most diabolical human being ive ever dealt with in my life, which is insane considering I took an asynchronous online class where office hours weren't provided, so i shouldn't have had to deal with him at all
DO NOT take the class if he is the professor. He cannot teach but will assign you complicated assignments to check your understanding. I've received multiple zeros on assignments for not providing the “correct number” of citations.
You can pour hours and hours into an assignment and only get one point on it because of incorrect citations. It is hard to remember that this is a Biology course, not an English/ Research course.
One of the harshest professors I have ever had at WMU. If you can, please take this class with another professor. There are so many things I could rant about when it comes to him but there just isn't enough time in the world.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HIM IF YOU WANT A GOOD GRADE!!! He hands out zeroes for small mistakes like halloween candy. If you miss even a period in a reference, you'll get a zero on an assignment you've been working on for the past week. The sheer amount of work he hands out is insane.
Do not take this course with him as the professor! He rarely answers emails, and when he does he only uses a few words and puts his name in all caps as if he were mad to receive the email. He doesn't answer emails after 5:00 pm and weekends which shows that he's not committed to his job. He will mark down points for a missed period or wrong font
Worst professor ever. Makes things more difficult than needed. Citations required for every assignment, and any minor errors result in a zero. He is a harsh grader and does not explain what you did wrong. When you email him, he is very rude and makes you feel bad for emailing him, despite his weekly reminders to "email if you have questions."
terrible class
This is basically an english class where you do not learn genetics. He cares more about the citation than you knowing the course work. The outlines for the final project is unclear and it's worth a big chunk of the final grade.
Absolutely terrible, I had to withdraw from the class and will be taking it through my local community college instead. He grades more on citations than actually knowing the content, and the slightest error in a reference will result in a failure of the assignment. I strongly recommend trying to find another way to take this course.
Dr. Geiser is the worst professor I have ever had. He is very rude over email, refuses to help you understand mistakes, and will give you a 0 on every assignment if your APA citation isn't formatted perfectly. It is not worth taking this class. It is so discouraging for a prof to intentionally make an intro-level class so extremely difficult. 0/10.
I have never had a professor be so rude and condescending. I read other reviews and since this was the only professor I could fit into my schedule, I figured people were overreacting or they did not do well so they took it out on the professor. WRONG! The workload was insane and the grading was incredibly harsh. DO NOT TAKE.
Professor Geiser was genuinely the worst professor I have ever had. He was unhelpful, unkind, and did not want to help students succeed. It is not impressive to have an intro course that is incredibly difficult. I cannot even begin to express how much this course destroyed my mental health and my motivation. DO NOT take this course unless required.
This professor is one of the worst that i've ever had. He does not care at all for the information within assignments. He cares more that the citations are perfect. If you miss one tiny thing in the citation it is an automatic zero. And don't even think about emailing. He won't respond. Or it will be a very condescending response.
Unprofessional and western should have been fired him for his unsupportiveness
He did not like me so he found any reason to report me for academic misconduct. He wanted me to receive a E and to be out of his class. Western refuses to fire him due to a contract although he should not be a teacher. DO NOT TAKE!
Take bio 1610 in the spring with Dr. Bean instead.
He wants his students to think past knowing the text, and learn on their own. I've gotten marked on virtually anything he could find, and for some things that are not even listed in his grading rubric for each assignment. Genetics is not that hard, I have taken it before. This class, however, is garbage that will most certainly affect your GPA.
As a student who is works ahead this class is more than it needs to be. The content takes at least 7 hours per module and that is for the simple ones. Don't expect his promises of grading ahead if you turn it in ahead to come true. I don't think I have had him grade ahead of time once and I turn things in anywhere from 3 days to two weeks early.
He does not know know/care about his student as he has not been to the university in over two years. We were working in a lab connected to his and we went to move a container so we could put out shaker there, we found the tube(from his room) was leaking blue/brown caustic gunk. He also has not published a paper since 2011
To be honest, I took the summer class of genetics with Professor Geiser, and it really wasn't that hard. I don't know how fall or spring classes are with him, but my summer class was 10 times easier than the other genetics course I took with another professor. Even though it was fine, this professor definitely does not care about you.
This was one of the worst academic experiences I've had. His grading is extremely harsh. He is also rude over email. This class took a serious toll on my mental health. If you can avoid taking this class with him, please do. Wait for a different semester or choose a different instructor. You will save yourself a lot of stress and frustration.
