really nice guy. relaxed teaching style

GREAT TEACHER, totally recommend him. One of my favorite professors!
Awesome guy who taught me so much and opened my mind-he is the best
GREAT professor. Very nice, accomodating and funny
this dude is the greatest.
A very caring person - cries in class, a real person and class act
Great guy, Let me into his class even when it was full.........
Spends most of the class talking about current events. No textbook. Could learn more from watching CNN and buying a geography book.
One of my favorite teachers ever. There's a lot you can learn from this guy.
No textbook but you learn things that aren't found in books. Very passionate about subject, plus class is outside whenever possible and THAT is awesome.
easy class but no one goes because they dont really care about his opinion on EVERYTHING! he needs to stop telling us about iraq and start teaching us geography. i only go to find out when the next test is. everything is online
Class is nothing but him giving his opinion on this or that, but it's entertaining. I only go about once every two weeks, to keep up with when the next test will be. The workload is next to none (one community service project, one essay, three tests).
he's such a cool guy, doesn't require you to buy the book, test is strictly on notes, easy tests, easy projects, DEFINATELY reccomend him
Jack is way cool. Very liberal, and even more expressive about being so. very chill and down to earth. Class is easy and informative
very nice, but needs to stop preaching anti-war crap in class... tests are a lil confusing
Ok this class is pretty easy, but it's not all that interesting. I'd give it a 2 or 3 on the interesting scale. He is a good guy and grades easy and is very understanding.
My 5 year old niece could pass this class. The guy is a great teacher and is a fair grader. Just listen when he talks and take good notes. BE sure to do the Service project and country report.
course annoyingly easy and teacher annoying to constantly listen to his constant right opinions but extremely intelligent and at times extremely interesting
Very happy to help you succeed and do well, though it is pointless coming to class, literally study 30 mins max for the tests, cool guy.
We do no work in class and tests are usually a take home essay if even that. He focuses more on learning and talking about things going on in the world. I enjoy the class and he is super laid back. No grades in the class really so a little subjective.
easy class. don't do any work. the only thing you learn are his opinion. tests would be easy if half of the questions weren't just "what your prof. thinks."
Jack is a dick when it comes to his opinion on everything, but it's an easy A. He was too lazy to assign a service project...3 tests my little cousin could pass.
no book neccessary, test easy if outline provided...if not, watch out, only 3 grades
It shouldn't be geography, it's more of a social issues class because the majority of the time he tells you his opinion on any issue in the world. Not very organized, never really know when the tests are.. only 3 tests, fine not horrid
despite his liberal opinions, i really learned a lot from this guy. No work at all, just study 30 minutes for the test, nice guy.
Jack is an amazing teacher, he does spout his opinion, but you can tell he is a very smart man, I learned alot from this class and he knows his stuff. Tests are easy, just take the notes he gives in class and youll be fine.
Awesome class, but has strong opinions. One of the best profs I have had in my four years here.
Jack is a great guy. Knows everything there is to know about any and all issues in the world. Talks a lot, we do nothing in class except take notes. Tests are kind of weird bc it's always what "he thinks" not necessarily the facts u take down
Not bad. Though the class can get boring, it's not that hard. He covers the history of a few countries he knows well and the tests are pretty easy. There's no outside work. If you go to class you'll be fine. Take him, it's worth it.
Wonderful professor. The first to actually make you think about the world. Some people on here have said that he pushes his ideals- but that is not the case. He specificially states that he opinion isn't what is "right", as long as you think abo
hated going to class every day, he is not organized AT ALL...all he does is tell his opinion...somehow he always gets back to talking about politics and vietnam!!!
jack is the reason i am a successful Peace Corps volunteer. i owe it all to his geography of Russia class that grabbed my interest. you'll regret not taking his classes. i promise.
Really liked this class. Lots of class discussion, no papers just tests. Very laidback professor, willing to spend a whole class period talking about politics.
not your typical geog. class. he talks about up to date stuff more than the geog subjects. 3 uncummulative exams that are multiple choice t/f and matching. very nice, sweet guy
He is very easy. But class can be a bit boring, and I was disappointed in what the class was like. Lets just say it doesn't seem like geography most of the time. If you like politics and debates that usually go no where, then you'll love the class. Don't have a text book, so thats nice.
Very liberal guy. makes jokes a lot. hardly every goes over material, just debates over politics during class. he always wears jeans and a blue shirt! talks about vietnam war all the time. material is easy- only 3 tests, no papers. no attendance policy.
Jack is the man! I love the guy.. He is so down to earth and provokes his class to think realistically about the world.. He's funny and makes his lectures interesting because he aims to talk about things that matter to college students.. I def. reccommend his class.. truly enlightening
if you can get him, take him. no attendance policy, only three tests, no papers. plus, he always talks about whatever the class want to talk about and really just wants you to learn about the world, doesnt care about boring facts. definately take him he is great
Jack is a cool liberal guy...always talks about politics and Vietnam War.He's hilarious, but spends too much time talking about whatever we want and not what's on the tests...so if you don't go to class, you're screwed. sometimes notes are online, no attendance policy,no projects, no hw, 3 tests.
I love this man! Great guy, very nice. Class is great; sometimes we get so involved talking about current issues we forget talk about the material. If you can, TAKE THIS CLASS! You learn many life lessons. If you're a conservative tho, be prepared to be bombarded with Jack's liberal opinions ;)
I love Jack! He's an amazing guy who teaches you about LIFE, not just stupid facts from a book. he makes you think and feel and care about the world. Great class! i'd take him again just to listen to him talk! Don't take if youre an easily offended Conservative, unless u can handle his opinions!
Went the whole semester without teaching but a 1/2 class about the subject matter. Instead talks about current issues and what's on his mind. Starts class with, "Anything you all want to talk about?" Strongly opinionated. If you want to learn the subject material, don't take him.
Jack is the best teacher I have ever had, and more signficantly, I respect him more then any teacher I've had. He wants you to get more out of it then as he said "where coal is made in Russia," he wants to make a difference. You get what you want out of this class. An A is definitely attainable.
Sweet guy, has a good heart. Watch out if you are conservative, the man hates Bush with the fire of a thousand suns. Pay attention in class and take good notes, the tests are based on that and his review guides.
Wants you to learn, not to just regurgitate facts.
This class matters, if you take it with Jack. No time spent memorizing dumbass maps, or charts of facts and figures; no textbook; but you're going to be taught to think critically and analytitically about the world you live in, whether you like it or not. Excellent course and teacher.
Tender fellow, but stuck in his glory days when conspiracy theories about vietnam held a bit of weight. Not at all objective, and uses his class as a stage for liberal psycho-babel that is not backed up with current facts (he's a Malthusian, imagine, a Malthusian theorist in the 21st century!)
Very interesting class, and he makes it fun, Mr Gentile is very helpful and his class is interesting. I never would have thought an hour and a half lecture twice a week could be fun, i looked forward to going to his class all the time because he made it interesting with his life stories
great guy, i really hope he opens the mind of some of the politically apathetic "conservatives by default" down here. class is easy, and theres no attendance policy. his tests are pretty much entirely on the lectures, and a few easy readings. really, taking this class is what a gen-ed should be...stress free.
take jack! his lectures are actually interesting. no textbook, he basically just wants you to take from it what you want. tests are easy.
Starts off by asking what you want to talk about. Makes you wonder what the point is. He rambles and goes on tangents, and his tests are pulled from absolutly nowhere. You sit there and ask yourself, is this guy serious? He asked what his opinion was, and about 10 of the 75 questions were jokes. have friends in this one...makes it not so borin
Goes on tangents that lack relevancy. Boring lectures. Tests are pretty easy... some questions only have one option so you have to get it right. Funny guy, and really wants you to do well. Must do well on tests because those are the only grades. Basically 3 tests total. That's it. Thankfully I have friends in the class who make it bearable.
Super nice guy. Jams his political agenda down your throat a bit, so if your not a die-hard liberal, just learn to bite your tongue. Tests are pretty easy, minimal studying. Definately take this class, though.
Jack is great! If you're a conservative, you might not like him. Only grades for the course are 3 tests, but he'll answer any questions you have the day before. No attendance policy, lectures can sometimes seem to go on, but no textbook. Take this class if you love to hear life stories, because you'll hear many:)
haha, oh what a class. i did not study, did not read, barley took notes - all i did was go to class, listen to his random lectures and stories and i got an A. if you dont pass this class there is something wrong with you. take it with friends so you can talk to someone becuse after a while he starts repeating the same thing day after day.
Great guy!! this class just adds to your general knowledge and his intention is not to teach you things you will forget immediately after the semester is over. He gives interesting and useful info that stays with you for life.
Jack is the man. this class changed my life. no textbook, so go to class!! his lectures can sometimes go on, but after the first test, the material is really interesting. middle east and then russia. The russia section changed my life, no lie. He shows you his personal slides and commentary, and I learned so much in that last section. take thisclas
I don't think you have to be a die-hard liberal to enjoy Prof. Gentile - just intelligent. He says himself he's not trying to change your opinions, he's just trying to show you a diff. way to look at things. His lectures were interesting (no memorizing maps), and on top of that he's by far one of the nicest instructors I've ever had. Great guy!
Most approachable teacher I've had. He really does care what hes talking about and makes the point that his views are just one man's views. I personally find the class interesting.
MY favorite teacher I have had, I want to take more of his classes! I took this class as a GenEd but am really glad I took it. His tests are not Easy but they are definatly not hard, just study and you'll be fine. There is no attendence policy, but i found myself wanting to go to class! The begining starts out boring but the end is a lot of fun!
Jack is the man! He will help you with anything you need help on and is not afriad to express his opinions. With that said, he also likes you to express your own opinion! The class is super interesting and I got a B+ on every test with little studying. He gives ample extra credit! LOVED THE CLASS!
greatest professor i have ever had. no attendence policy, but i was eager to go to every class and hear his lecture. extremely interesting, you will think differently afterwards. life-changing, no joke.
Jack is not a normal geography teacher. He does not teach anything out of the book, DO NOT BUY IT. The classes are a little dry but make sure you study for the tests.
Jack is amazing. NO BOOK...NO ATTENDANCE (but he says he knows when you are not there even though there was like 150 people in the class.) Doesn't really care about grades, more about if you actually get something out of the class. I got a C and 2 Bs on tests (and those were the only grades) and still ended up with an A.
Says he cares more about you getting something out of the class than grades...I'm sure I'll get an A, but I didn't get very much out of the class at all. Hardly any class structure. Very little class time spent talking about problems in a constructive way. Nice guy and very passionate, but I never left class feeling like I learned anything.
No structure to class. Smart Man but he seems burnt out.
Awesome and very interesting class. Even the class was pretty funny. Some of it is a little dry but if you come to class and actually ask questions it is really interesting.
Jack is the man. If you pay attention and come to class, you'll do fine. There's no book, just some online readings. His lectures are super interesting and I definitely enjoyed hearing whatever he had to say. I'd definitely recommend him if you are stuck taking GenEds, he definitely makes it interesting.
Jack is a cool guy, but can drone on too long in class. Usually it's about Russia. Three tests that's it. No book. If you took a high level geography in high school be prepared for a repeat.
Class was real slack. No attendance policy, only 3 tests that are based on pretty much whatever he decides to cover. Usually they are pretty easy and based on 2-3 readings online. I went to maybe 1 out of every 3-4 classes and I have a B average going into the final. Study for the tests and read the online documents and you'll be fine.
This class was kind of a joke. He only takes attendance like once a month and towards the end of the semester we basically just looked at slides from his trip to Russia. He can be funny but I was usually just bored. It's and easy class, no book and just 3 tests. If that's what your looking for then take him.
I hated him at first but he gets so much cooler as the semester progresses, just make sure you give him the chance. Attendance is not required but i recommend that you attend. I got a C and a D on two tests, and he decided to drop my D if i got higher than a C on my final...i ended up with a B in the class. He's hilarious if you give him a chanc
Jack is a really good guy. His lectures are interesting, but if you're not a liberal, you'll probably be offended sometimes. But he respects everyone's opinions anyway. There's no textbook and the test grades average about 80%. I recommend him. He's a good guy and has a ton of interesting stories that I'll probably actually remember after the class
its much more a global politics class than geography. material can be interesting and he loves to get students involved in debating his liberal views. he's an open-minded guy and you might learn something. 3 easy tests as long as you sorta listen to him, do his short readings, and know how a liberal thinks.
Great class, easy to do well in, and no attendance. Lectures are pretty interesting and can get heated at times. But it's never offensive unless you are very conservative. The first time I saw him I pictured him coming out of a cave at the base of a waterfall. Everyone likes him and his main goal is to just make you think. Definitely take him.
He is SUCH a great teacher; a friendly, opinionated man, but he really cares that you do well if you make the effort and go to class (even though he doesn't take attendance) and go to his study sessions, or shoot him an e-mail. He's really dedicated to involve the class in awesome discussions, so take the class, you'll def learn something! (:
This is a wonderful class of you are willing to explore the world around you. Jack is the best teacher in the world and he is very educated. He knows a lot from all his traveling and he likes Muslims. Great Guy and Great Class.
Jack is a great guy. He cares a lot about the subject and is extremely passionate about world issues, which is refreshing. The problem with this class is that it is too large and is not enough discussion-based. Lectures sometimes drone on too long and are not that exciting. Definitely got a lot out of the Iran-Iraq lectures, though.
Professor Gentile was AMAZING. He is SO passionate and believes his students can really make a difference in the world...really touching teacher. 3 exams no final. he's had applauded lectures and half the class thanked him and shook his hand after the last exam if that says anything. take him
He was one of my favorite professor. I never missed a class because i felt that he wold take attendance. Oh well i ended up with a A in the class. I went to his office hours. His office hours are helpful. Sometimes his notes online are very confusing. He clarifies during office hours.
Very good professor, Old man that likes to tell us about his stories of Vietnam and Russia. No book! 3 exams that's it! Pay attention, attend class (even though there is no attendance policy) and do the reading assignments and you shouldn't have a problem getting an A in the class.
Take Jack for whatever class you can! Especially if you are passionate about the environment. He is a true environmentalist and 325 was all service and project based which was very rewarding!
One of the most influential profs. I've had in 4 years at JMU. Really makes you think about what's going on outside of your own little world; increases awareness of global issues & makes them applicable to you! LOVE IT. He's a sweet man, very helpful. A very easy class if you attend all of his lectures. Even gives extra credit :)
He's a good guy. Absolutely loves russia which was weird, but he's passionate about what he teaches. His class isn't memorizing geography, its more anthropology. I skipped class a lot, he posts the power points on blackboard. Tested on his opinion. Overall he's a real nice guy, he's pretty funny too. take this class for your gen ed
Jack is absolutely awesome!! 4 exams all come from his ppts, opinions, and lectures. attendance is not mandatory so its easy to skip but you can still pass by studying what he posts online and reading them. literally thought i got lower and he surprised me at the end with a higher grade. TAKE HIM for this gen-ed!
At first I wasn't sure I was going to like the class, but by the end I really enjoyed it. Jack is very passionate about the subject and really tries to get you to think about the world differently than you already do. Only 3 tests, study handwritten notes and the powerpoints online and you will do well!
his class is so boring. and we talk about random things. he puts all of the power points on blackboard and you don't use a textbook. very opinionated, but a nice guy.
Gentile is a nice guy. He is very opinionated and many of the questions on the test start "According to your professor...". The course itself was interesting, but I'm not sure what we learned or what the objectives were. It is an easy 3 credits!
