Nice guy I guess. Class was lame.
Good teacher--lame class. What do you expect for required English class?
Unfair. harsh grading practices, too much politics in the classroom. Does and says things just for the reaction from students. Otherwise, he's an very interesting guy: he once had a fairly popular punk rock band!
i've never enjoyed english, but prof. goshert really has a passion for teaching and you can tell he really cares about helping his students. he always makes himself available to help and make sure you understand...if you don't get someting...it's your fault for not asking. he's a great teacher. best english teacher i've had.
I am very surprised by the other comments here, I found him to be very geniune, unbiased and hot as hell!

cool guy, marginally hard class. pretty tough on the final, but still interesting. great discussions/lectures.
Honestly one of the best teachers I've ever had. Classes can be demanding--he knows his subject so well and is not willing to settle for subpar work. You MUST challenge yourself to truly benefit from John's classes. He is very respectful of student opinions and will work with you if you ask for help. Hard, but SO worth it. He has so much to offer.
Enlightening discussions- I'm glad I took this course from him. He's approachable and offers a lot of insight into our readings, especially with regard to the history surrounding the literature and connections to American culture. I would take a class from him again.
hard, but very approachable. great guy who will take the time to explain things to you personally. I think some responses here are from people who've never taken his class.
Very good teacher and one of the coolest guys I've met. Very good with one-on-one time and giving clear suggestions for a guaranteed A on your paper. Yes, he's kind've a punk, 80's kind of guy, but still really cool and easy. And he definitely favors students who put in the effort.
He is my FAVORITE PROFESSOR EVER!!! I've taken all the classes he teaches. I have never learned so much in a class. He does expect a lot of students, but if you work hard it definately shows in your grade. He is respectful of students ideas, and gives everyone a chance to share their opinion.
Excellent teacher, one of the best in my educational experience. He demands a lot, but I leaned much from his class.
Must do the reading before this class. Very helpful and approchable. Is a tough grader, but fair.
Great prof. He loves students who show interest. Ex guitarist for Monsula, loves music. San Fran progressive, post modern, existentialist, genius. Take a lit course from this guy, you'll love it. Sick of the Happy Valley status quo? This guy will melt your skull with his progressive approach to English.
This guy is the best teacher ever. He is so awesome talk to and he cares so much about the students. You will not find a teacher like him just around the corner expecially here in Provo, you must take him, you will work hard but get so much out of the class
He is the best english teacher I have ever had. He does everything he cant to help you succeed. If you email him a question he will personally take the time to reasearch your question, and get you an answer. He is very interested and knowledgeable at about everything. He is way cool. I would totally advise him for anyone taking any sort of english.
Amazing discussion leader and gets the most out of his students
Goshert cares about his students and treats them with respect. He was my favorite professor. I learned more from him than any other professor. The man is brilliant and high energy. He makes you think in ways you never thought possible. I would take another class from him, but I already took every class he teaches.
He was an executive with Monsanto in the 80's. He is still very involved with soybeans.
Dr. Goshert is a fantastic teacher and is most concerned with seeing his students succeed. He gives helpful feedback on papers and lets the students lead the discussions. He offers insight without showing off or asserting authority. He respects his students and is good to find the positive side of things. He?ll make you think! Take a class from h
Interested, intelligent, patient with idiots unless they push him over the edge. Very liberal--but tries to be respectful of more moderate students. Pushes students beyond their comfort zones--exactly like a teacher should. Emphasizes critical thinking. Expects a lot. Lucky to have taken several classes from him.
LOVED the class in fall 07, he's writing his own textbook with a few other professors from all over the country. LOVED the text as well. Good input, good feedback, good discussions, honest and straightforward. You get what you put into his class.
John is the man! He expects a ton from his students and if you don't show up you will fail but he is easily the greatest english professor I have and probably will ever take. He is super helpful with the students success because he cares about his students.
He started off as a great guy. I had him for the Careers in English class. Dont ever tell him you are quiting English like i did. It is a bad idea... all in all though he is a decent teacher. he did freak out at some poor student once- that was scary. Swears in class a bit, but not too bad.
John is by far the best teacher I have had so far. He is knowledgable of everything he teaches and truly cares about his students. I have never had a teacher so willing to help outside of class. He is enthusiastic about English and writing you you will learn so much from him. Awesome guy. Fun class too.
John is a good guy, he has 7 papers and builds up to the final using the previous papers.. They are somewhat difficult to understand but he is very caring and makes time to answer questions and help anyone in class suceed. He is overall a preety cool guy. I had to revise my first two papers but he still helped me get a "B" in the class.
This is the worst teacher and person I have ever some into contact with. Abrasive, rude, cocky, and disgustingly liberal and discriminates against students who do not share his political views.
Goshert is insanely smart! He basically has a small cult-like following in the English department. Be prepared for metaphysical discussions that are way over your head! Lots of (DEPRESSING)reading, short 2-3pg papers (I spent about 1hr on all of them and got A's) a final 10pg paper. He doesn't require you to remember what was discussed in class.
The class was interesting and the books he chose to read were ok, but the class was nothing but discussion and near the end of the semester I was getting burned out.
Do not take any class from this bigotted teacher. With left wing views myself, I found him to be self centered, cocky and not as smart as most profs. He admitted to being in UT only b/c the job market sucks everywhere else. He clearly hates it here and students who disagree with him or who don't worship the ground he walks on. Not impressed.
Fabulous teacher! He made the class so interesting. He will answer all your questions and help you as much as you need. Follow his advice because he knows what he is talking about. I wouldn't want to take this class from anyone else. It is a challenging class but you really learn how to write a paper.
This teacher can't even spell the title of his own book right! i hated this teacher! he hates Utah and his classes are SUPER boring!
Best professor I ever had. Genius, and down to earth. Wants you to get the max out of each class. Doesn't insist you agree with him, just that you make a good argument either way.
Wonderful at leading class discussions. Very respectful to the students. He chose cool novels to read. Although a couple of them I didn't like, he made them have real meaning in class discussions for me. I did get warn out a bit by the end of the semester because of the intensity of the discussions, but I still enjoyed going. Great perspectives!
Wow! This guy is great. He will challenge you to the core and only give the grade you deserve, but you'll walk away from the class knowing he gave you everything he has to offer, and that is a hell of a lot.
Amazingly insightful and intelligent. He is a great teacher. Very willing to help and gives very detailled explanations. I wish I had more classes with him or more teachers like him.
Intense class discussions that I absolutely loved. He pushed me to think outside my box and I learned a lot in that class. His books were all interesting and some of the journal readings were hard but he was willing to help work me through them. Great class. Definitely recommend it!
Despite having failed his class once, I plan on taking it again in the Fall of '12 to try again. This prof is VERY challenging and the amount of time required is enormous. However, you learn a lot and you get out what you put in. The textbook is a MUST. He is very factual, he doesn't sugar-coat anything and tells you how it is. Good teacher.
I'm sure he's a good teacher for higher level classes but often ended class early & twice walked out slamming the door behind him. It's a discussion class & yet, he lectures. He never had a plan B if discussion lagged.Class time was spent discussing the assignment & people were still confused @ the end of class. You also print off a lot of paper.
He's one of the absolute best. Most instructors are smart, but this guy's a genius. Expect a lot of reading and to come to class with fully formed ideas and opinions to contribute to the discussion. His class is a lot of work, but he'll make you a better thinker, writer, and a better person.
Professor Goshert is really enthusiastic about this class, which really helped. He worked really hard to understand the students and their interests, not just randomly grade our papers but really understand where we were coming from. He gave really great feedback on my papers that helped a lot. I loved his class and would totally take it again.
Awesome professor! He was intimidating at first, but as long as you do your reading and writing assignments and come prepared to class you will be fine. He is extremely helpful and will answer any questions you have and even help you form your paper. The only assignments are a few papers that you build on to write your final paper.
If you really want to improve your writing skills, then take the class from this professor. He really cares about the topic you choose to write on and is always willing to help. For the first paper he read everyone's sources to make sure he understood where you were coming from to be able to help.
He was kind of intimidating and I was scared a few times, but maybe that's just me. I got a bad grade on the first paper but after revisions it was an A. He will invest himself in the topic of your research paper and gives good suggestions. Sometimes a little confusing, but if you ask for clarification he will give it. Sounds like Nicolas Cage
This teacher is very specific. It's nice that he breaks the main, 12 page, writing assignment down into the 4 smaller papers that you can basically combine in the end, but he is a stickler; his way or no way. I came to him with a question about my grade after class and he loudly told me about all my mistakes. Would NOT take again.
This professor made me a better writer more than any other professor ever has. 10/10, would take again.
Professor Goshert was amazing! He made my experience in class a very good one. He respected us as students and was interested in our opinions and what we wanted to write about. He always made sure that he understood my question before he answered it and he made sure I wasn't lost or confused. He really helped improve my writing. Take him!
I took this class during the summer, my mistake. He doesn't use canvas, so if you rely on that, don't take his class. Lots of reading. It seems like his mouth can't keep up with his brain so unless you have a good memory, you'll lose a lot of the information. He also doesn't like the use of computers in his class, so no note taking on your laptop.
Goshert changed my life and changed the way I see literature.
Great professor! His was the first English class I've ever actually enjoyed. Obviously there's a lot of papers and a lot of textbook reading (he wrote his own textbook & expects you to know it). He's kind of a narcissist, but also very funny and intelligent. If you're the type of student that's late, or doesn't bring a pencil, don't take his class.
This teacher is the best! This was my first class that I felt really challenged and I loved it! I think he is the best teacher in the entire English department and is brilliant. Final grades are not posted but I would be okay with failing this class just so I could take from him again. I know I'd still learn a lot. A +++
John is an incredible teacher! It is a tough class in some ways but great in that he lets you pick something you are passionate about it and helps you flesh it out and make it even better throughout a whole semester. Super super great skills to learn for college. Super intellectual lectures. Loved the class.
Goshert is the bomb! He must be the smartest teacher in the English department. Every class he has he is ready to teach and also takes input from his students. He doesn't really lecture, it is more like a conversation. I don't know if I have ever learned so much in one class. Would love to take any class he teaches. Worth every second.
Prof Goshert was an amazing teacher! His lectures weren't dull and the reading he assigned goes along very well with the paper you will be working on at that time. He is always willing to help where he can and gives excellent feedback on papers. He really wants his students to succeed and does whatever he can to make that happen.
MUST be on time. No phones, no talking, no packing up even 2 min early or you will get yelled at. Lectures about the 5 essays you are going to be completing throughout the semester (slightly redundant). Very critical which is nice, but loses his temper quickly. Grades unfairly if upset. Very smart but was strongly disliked by my entire class
I find it odd how the positive comments all sound very similar to each other. Why is that? Also, the textbook was written by the professor.
The feedback on the papers is not helpful. His handwriting is impossible to read. He wrote the textbook you are forced to buy. He talks out of the text a lot. I do not recommend this professor. He was very nice just not good at teaching.
Crazy amount of work during the summer, 4 essays total over the semester
English has never been my strong suit, but this professor pushed me to stretch myself and be better. I saw a huge progress in myself from this class. He can come across as harsh, demanding, or even rude. But he's a nice guy that truly cares about academic success
Smug and pedantic. REFUSES to use Canvas. Very rude if anyone questions his methods. No technology allowed at all. Thought it was weird that in an email before the semester he not only said we have to have a physical copy of the textbook, he heavily suggested we shouldnt get it used (which is way cheaper). Turns out he WROTE the textbook!
Dr. Goshert used a textbook he had written himself, so it was worth the buy and the readings and activities we used in the book actually helped with writing essays. We wrote four essays, but each one was on the same topic so it was more about building off of our research as we went along in the class. He cared about our topics and how we were doing
Several books to buy, TONS of reading, lots of papers throughout the semester, and one long research paper. Lecture/discussion heavy in class. He is clear about what he wants, will help you if you just ask. Caring and enthusiastic, just lots of work involved.
John is a terrible professor because if he does not like you, which is most students, you will not get a good grade on your papers. He yells a lot and cusses at students. It was a very hostile learning environment and I had terrible anxiety in his class because I was so scared he would start shouting at me. I do not recommend taking him at all.
Dr. Goshert was the best professor I've had by far. He wrote the textbook and it was great! It is an easy read and really helps you solidify your understanding of what is discussed in class. He doesn't lecture but they are conversations. His feedback was great and he is very encouraging and validating. He expects the students to be grown ups.
Prof Goshert is amazing. All of his papers during the semester accumulate to make your final paper. He makes it amazingly easy to understand the parts of the papers that he expects. Papers are peer reviewed before they're due so you have a chance to edit. Textbook is inexpensive and incredibly useful - must have. No tests!
He's amazing. Really, don't let syllabus day scare you away. He lets you know that this is a more advanced class and he's going to push you to be more critical of a reader. Short response papers due after novels, a midterm paper, and a final research project that he gives you 3 months in advance. Plenty of time. He's intelligent and wants to help.
You are only graded on 4 major writing projects throughout the semester, he is really intense about class time and a pretty tough grader but is very helpful if you ask questions about the assignments in class and reach out to him outside of class. He doesn't use canvas at all which is worrisome when you don't know your grade throughout the semester
He will make a snap judgement about you at the beginning of the semester and it will stick with you until the end. He grades based on opinion of you and nothing else. The papers I have written for his class would have received A's and B's from any other professor I have taken in the past 4 years. His feedback on papers is nitpick-y and unreadable.
Based on the good reviews here I thought he would be badass and compelling. I was wrong DO NOT TAKE HIM His lectures are predictable and he has a really obnoxious know it all tone that isn't conducive to the questioning of the theorists he is so in love with. He is also unreasonable. I had him during COVID, he couldn't use canvas at all. Ridiculous
I had hopes the first week of class that maybe his teaching style would make more sense to me by the end, and I can confidently say I only got more confused. He doesn't come prepared to lead a discussion, and asks vague and confusing questions. Bottom line, don't take him if you value your sanity.
I didn't like English before this class and now I'm scared to take another one. He doesn't use canvas at all. His opinion of you determines your grade. He yells and cusses at students for asking questions but then will yell and cuss more if you don't ask questions. VERY short tempered. Would not recommend.
His opinion of you completely determines what kind of grade you get on assignments. Don't bother asking for help or feedback, the only "help" he provides is making you feel stupid for asking and telling you to "just do it" without further explanation. He doesn't use canvas at all and you have to hope and pray you have a good grade all semester.
Oh my gosh how to tell yall DONT LISTEN TO THE POSITIVE GRADERS!! I was a 4.0 student before this class, but wrote my essays on healthier alternatives to abortion- which he is pro abortion. I literally got a 5% on ALL my papers, which is the entire grade! I submitted the papers to my old professors, who said they were A/B papers. Worst. Ever.
Worst. Professor. Ever. He may be smart, he wrote the textbook, but he is VERY opinionated. If your opinions don't match, you'll fail. If he decides he doesn't like you, you get a 5% on EVERY SINGLE PAPER! It's ridiculous. IDK where the good comments are coming from, because everyone in my class very much disliked him and ENG2010. Don't take it.
I think he is more the type of professor for advanced classes? One tiny mistake and he will fail you. He has very little patience. With online, he takes forever to answer questions, and the answer usually says 'it's not hard, figure it out'. Again, he would be a good professor for tougher classes, but not Eng 2010.
From the very first lecture I struggled with this prof. The textbook was written by him, he is very unclear in how he wants projects done, extremely egotistical, and will often embarrass students for not understanding his teaching style. Only take his class if it's your very last resort.
GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN! I can't emphasize this enough DO NOT TAKE HIM. English has been my best subject since 7th grade and he failed me. I begged him for months to help me and tell me what I was doing wrong. zero help. didn't care if I succeeded or failed. He should not be a professor. He is rude and made me feel like an idiot. Stay away.
Where do I begin? English has always been my strongest subject but with him it's as if he's out to get me. His opinion will determine if you pass or not. Also, don't expect any helpful feedback, he'll make you feel stupid for asking. Don't take if you can help it. Don't write about alternatives to abortion either, no matter how good, he'll fail you
I was always at class, but he docked me on attendance because I didn't participate as much as he would've liked. And you know why? Because any time I said anything, he made me feel so stupid. I met with him outside of class several times to try to get my grade up, and left the meeting in tears every time because of the way he spoke to me. nope.
I do not recommend this class. It is incredibly reading-heavy and the expectations are unclear throughout the whole semester. I had extreme anxiety in his class and when we met for 1 on 1s he made me feel stupid instead of helping me. I learned nothing and had an F until he finally put grades in Canvas after the semester ended.
I've taken several literature classes, and this was by far the most frustrating for me. It feels like he only cares what you have to say if it goes right along with what he already thinks. He seems like an academic elitist with no patience. He said something along the lines of "That's why I get paid" at least once per class. Very arrogant.
Dr. Goshert was amazing! His lectures were so insightful. We had to read seven novels over the course of the semester - all of them were great. You'll get an A if you participate in class and listen. People who didn't do well in this class probably did not read. 2-page response paper for each book. 10-page final. Take him!
I wouldn't take his class if I were you. His lesson plans were unorganized and he was never clear on his instructions and was very difficult to learn from due to his use of words. He was extremely rude and seems like he honestly doesn't even like his job. Tough grader, and haven't heard good things from others as well. He tries though!
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! To say John is an awful professor would be a HUGE understatement. He likes to give 5% on papers if there is something wrong and it is nearly impossible to get help from him as he is so mad and annoyed when asked for instruction. Rude, narcissistic, arrogant, over critical and asshole are good terms to describe him. STAY AWAY!!
Professor Goshert is a pretty good teacher overall, I liked him as a person but he is a super strict grader. But he does help give ideas to write your papers. But I personally wouldn't take his class again. Cool guy though.
Lots of work. 7 Scholarly articles and many papers to write. Prof. Goshert was extremely helpful, but the class was just plain difficult. I spent many more hours on the homework for this class than my 5 credit math or any other 3 credit. I would take Goshert again, but not this class. He is a pretty rough grader, but he wants you to succeed.
Avoid him at all costs! Professor Goshert is extremely rude and egotistical. He grades based off of his opinion of you and only that and he blatantly discriminates against students who disagree with his political views and the way he spoke to me during our meeting was disgusting and unacceptable.
Professor Goshert has clear expectations and is very thorough in everything he does. He is very attentive and is an active listener. He makes it easy to pass the class if you just come and participate, because you discuss in detail the assignments during class time. He gives good feedback and gives you lots of opportunities to come to him for help
He is very disrespectful towards me and so narcissistic. He also grades based on whether you did the work or not.
Worst professor I've ever had! Goshert "doesn't believe in rubrics" so you have no idea what the expectation is for papers. He was condisending and rude when students asked questions. Majority of the class received a 5% on at least one of his writting projects. Super strict grader gives you a failing grade for a B+ paper. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
I honestly have no idea how this professor still has a job! He is so disrespectful towards his students and will do whatever he can to fail them! I spent hours writing papers for this class. Getting peer reviews help from writing lab and asking other teachers for help, since John would dismiss me when I went to him. No amout of effort is enough.
I love English but hated this class due to the Professor. I recieved 5% on papers I'd work on for days. He said I could revise papers for a chance to better my grade but only regraded the first paper. I was promised a chance at revision so I rewrote my entire paper and when I submited it he NEVER graded my revision. One bad grade and your done.
This guy is hands down the worst professor I've ever had. He's all about himself, super rude, and doesn't give a helping hand. It's his way or no way at all. If you don't agree with his views, he is judgey and holier-than-thou. He spends half of the class trying to rephrase what the students already said; it is the worst class I've ever sat thru.
A VERY tough grader and "doesn't believe in rubrics." We had 4 writing projects that were the majority of our grade, but he only used rubrics on the last two, & they were very vague. He uses a textbook "draft" that isn't very well-written, & gets personally offended when students don't read it. He is the most condescending person I have ever met.
AVOID!!! This class was incredibly difficult for a number of reasons. First, he is extremely disrespectful to students, you can tell that he thinks he is 100x more important. His instructions (If there are any) are basically nonexistent. Do not take this class with this professor. You will fail even with good work.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!! He grades super hard and gives no good feedback. I have turned in good work and still gotten bad grades. I got a 5% on one of mine. DON'T TAKE IT!!!
Dr. Goshert is a teacher that will push their students to do their best. If you are looking for easy college credit, this is not the place for you. He is very willing to help any student that asks. He will always go out of his way to make office time for each student that asks. If you want a class that will teach you to think, Goshert is for you.
Beware of the bad reviews, they're most likely written in fits of anger! John has been one of the best professors in the English department--he knows what he's talking about and is very interested in what students have to say and encourages discussion over lectures. He takes no B.S., so if you don't take class seriously, he'll notice. I love that!
Uses lots of profanity and very much likes to use big words to seem smart. Tends to talk in circles and answers questions with questions. Assignments seemed way more complicated because he can't explain them well. Talks fast without actually saying anything of substance. Good luck understanding him unless you are an extremely deep critical thinker.
He is a really tough grader. He is a purist about the theories covered by theorists. Points are lost for having a misunderstanding about what a theorist meant exactly. He has high expectations for critical thinking and understanding. He does not explain clearly. He is strict on attendance which is graded by participation. Good but hard.
Any professor who has taught for over 20 years is either the best or the worst. John is the former. He cares so much about every student, and has office hours all the time. Even though I am not in his class anymore, I still stop by and he always makes time to chat about school, life, etc. Take him if you want to learn, avoid if you like ignorance.
This guys is strict! He calls you out on anything in front of the entire class. He called out one student twice on the first day. Never saw that guy again. incoherent, tends to ramble, and is tough to ask for help. Would never have taken his class if I knew he was going to be so hard to deal with.
Avoid this class if you can - the professor is extremely tough on grading and offers little helpful feedback. However, using study tools like unstuckstudy can help prep for assignments. Overall, a challenging but manageable course if you're willing to put in the work.
No textbooks were linked and I was forced to drop the course.
This teacher is tough! He yells at students in class for small matters, like asking a questions. His lectures are very hard to follow and he gives bad feedback.
John is a good professor. People found him standoffish and very confrontational, so if that makes you nervous do not take his class. He grades according to his rubric, gives good feedback if you are on time, and does care about his students and works with you. Has an ego but can back it with his knowledge, if you put in the work you will be fine.
