Really excted about literature, but a tough grader
Good teacher, would recommend
Amazin amount of knowledge coupled with a caring attitude. You'll never forget his class, a real trip. Worth the price of admission.
*warning: expects you to read and think about assignments.
Fun teacher- always worth showing up to hear what he's got to say- excellent choices for readings. a total trip!
Great teacher... you never know what he's going to say, full of energy, and high on life. Hard grader- expects you to think... but if you have any questions he will help you. Take him as many times as you can!
Really awesome professor. Makes you think, and actually likes his students. This is no easy A though, you have to work and he expects a lot from your final papers, but he is willing to helo you out as much as he can. Classes are never boring.
inspiring, comical, intriguing, demanding, but most importantly, rewarding
I went to his office hours and he told me what he wanted on my essay then when I turned it in, he tore it apart!
Scatterbrained, lectures not conducive to note-taking, argues with students over their opinions rather than imparting information or wisdom- Beware!
loved his approach - a naturally open mind, loves ideas and respectful of students in the classroom, but weird 1:1 in office hours; he's playful, highly intelligent, a natural teacher.
One of the finest professors we have At State. I took him twice. He's very concerned and caring, and wants you to succeed. Turned me on to a lot of cool lit that I might not have read on my own, such as Winterson. Take him!
Always an open mind and willing to help/discuss ideas about the lit. he assigns. Inherently challenging, but not impossible. A must-take by any serious student of literature! You'll walk away learning something new and applicable to lit. in general.
this guy is out there, he over explains but manages to keep it interesting
Totally scatterbrained...it's like Mr. Peterman from Seinfeld teaching lit. Otherwise interesting class, a lot of reading but it's really interesting
hes a cool guy, but lets just say he's insane. his class gets old because you never know what he's talking about. but sometimes he tells the class about the time he wrestled an alligator and thats always fun. If he was more clear on how to get a good grade on his essays, I'd be happier with him.
He is very unorganized, which cause much confusion on what to study. The lectures were hard to understand and as an English major, I was very disappointed. Only the final and a paper and whatever you say, he says it's wrong. DON"T TAKE HIM ever!!!
Very unorganized, often talked about random out of class subjects. Taught only to specific students in class and ignored the rest. Was not subjective about Literature. Made me dislike the subject entirely. Take this teacher if you enjoy watching grass grow.
The lectures are interesting, unpredictable, and exciting - yeah, he rambles and goes on tangents but you get a lot of good information and a lot of really interesting ideas. I like his style, his obvious excitement, and his dedication to getting the students to understand what he's trying to relay.
Crazy Canadian...he speaks so fast sometimes its hard to understand...super nice guy, though...can be awfully funny...takes attendance...quizzes on reading in every lecture...one paper at the end...with an essay test too...
Interesting and exciting lectures. Made a 3 hour class fly by amazingly. If you have an opinion that doesn't match his, make sure you back it up in the text; no abstract ideas. Fun class, reading good. Hard to take notes cuz lecture is everywhere, but that was kinda the funnest part about it.
Probably the best professor I had at State, definetely the most entertaining. He is brilliant and says insightful things. He strays away from the material at times but only with interesting material. A must take teacher to open your mind to good literature and well executed public speaking.
An excellent professor, he's ramblings are surprisingly comprehensible. Infact, his infamous tangents are very interesting. His unorthodox style appeals to me.
Awesome teacher. Expects you to do your readings, keep up, and contribute to discussions. Will try and take again.
he's hot in that scruffy literature teacher way. nuff said.
Speaks HELLA FAST!!! Readings are kinda boring, but if you're lost on the readings, he'll go over it in class. His final paper, he'll let you write a first draft and he'll read it over and grade it right there. If you dun like the grade you get, you can redo it for a better one, and the grade you like, that'll be your final grade for the semester.
Bring a flashlight.
AWESOME PROFESSOR!! Definitely my favorite professor here at SDSU. He's funny and clearly knows his stuff. I learned a lot in his class *and* had a great time. Very personable. I'm definintely going to take him again, and I recommend everyone else to take him too! And if you have a well-behaved dog, he may let you bring it to class just ask him! :)
I loved this prof.at first, but he is way liberal and if you don't regurgitate what he says or see the same as he does you will not get a good grade.i tried to get help with my paper and he brushed me off and barely gave me the time of day for the help i needed. His lectures are hard to take notes on and it is impossible to stay awake in a 3hr class
Well, he seems to know his stuff...although I think he grades based on people agreeing with his lectures and own opinions. Cool guy though...wants to stand in the pond with the turtles and just be...yeah, a little wierd.
Really cool guy. He only gave us a paper, final, and reading quizzes (easy quizzes). He's an interesting guy to listen to. He goes off on tangents a lot, but they're pretty funny. I definitely recommend taking a course with him!
Granger talks a mile a minute, literally and goes off on random tangents. Just quizes (easy) a paper and the final. Don't feel like I learned a whole lot, but the class was interesting.
Took two classes with Granger this semester, and both were great. Keeps lectures interesting and has great selection of lit. Highly recommended
i highly disagree with the comment on 12/29/05. Granger goes out of his way to help his students on their papers(allows you to revise for a better grade!) he is an awesome teacher, great choice of books, he knows his stuff, and i was never bored in class. I got an A
Hated this class. the guy doesn't teach anything, just talks about how much he loves dogs and and animals and weird stuff. somehow relates everything to sex. rushed me out of his office during office hours. Hated going to class- fought to stay awake. Don't take it if you want to learn anything. WAY too much reading. not worth it.
If you are an incompetent student who prefers to have texts read to you, take this class. I am baffled by the amount of people who seem to have enjoyed Granger's literature courses. The only thing that helped me survive his incoherent ramblings was envisioning him as Terrance or Phillip (yes, he is Canadian).
Went to 95% of classes but took no notes whatsoever. Almost never read the material which led to about 50% or less on the quizzes. I did the paper at the end and ended up with a B. No idea while writing the paper but still got a good grade in the class and i liked the lectures because of their absurdity. classmate thought him good looking for 40's.
Excellent professor. Hilarious. Knowledgeable about the material and authors. Very personable and class laughs a few times during class, at least. A smart, quirky, personable, fun, and funny professor - hard to find. Highly recommend him.

He's really fun and keeps you awake and interested. He may seem quirky and flakey in class, but one on one, he's very calm, nice, and easy to talk to. I definitely recommend his class.
bring cheese stick crackers from Trader Joes as an offering. he will be happy and class will be more organized!
He is kind of strange but funny. If you get bored mention something about animals and he will tell you about bigfoot in Canada. Make sure you read the assigned material because there will be a quiz on it next time and the final will ask really detailed questions about it.
what a joke... .this guy is a total spaz. half the time i don't think he even knows what he's talking about. lectures are unorganized and all over the place, i read about 10 books and didn't learn a damn thing all semester. what a waste. easy quizes on the reading, lame paper assignment, and the final is the biggest joke you've ever seen.
My favorite class at state! Dont miss more than two classes, and you have to read, weekly quizzes, but he's super funny and so nice. Knows his stuff. Highly recommended, got an A-. He lets you re write your paper for better grade. Hard to not do good. TAKE HIM!!!
Granger's a hell of a guy. He introduced us to a number of texts I wouldn't have approached on my own - particularly Beckett's "Three Novels" - and made them fun. Sure, he could stand to be more organized and clear, but if you talk to him after class or during office hours, he'll help you out. Ask about fishing stories.
He seems like a nice guy but ... his class was so completely unorganised. He doesn't care if you show up or not, but his daily quizzes will affect your grade. He talks super fast & goes off on gnarly tangents that will confuse you. book choice was good. paper was lame. final was easy.
Great and interesting professor! He is the easiest man to get alone with and he loves to get all of his students involved. He even loves the slackers. He gives out a very fair amount of work and expects his students to participate and do well on quizzes. I'd take him for anything after having this class with him. He's just a fun guy*
Granger's great. He may talk fast, but he's always willing to slow down and clarify. Funny guy who makes class entertaining. Always willing to meet with students after class or during office hours. He's a must take.
Granger is an interesting person if you like the mystery of trying to figure people out. I had 524 and that was great for his unorganized style, but in 308W I could have used more guidance. Work was: Annotated Bibliography with 10 citations, quizzes on all reading, 10 pg research paper. I like him and will take him again, but only for lit class.
i like this guy a lot. very knowledgable. has interesting take on literature. funny in a weird kind of way. talks fast but will slow down if you want him to. a little unorganized but not that big of a deal. very helpful. cares about you as a student. absolutely loves animals.
Granger is an amazing professor!!! He is full of great stories and funny tidbits, but he also knows what he's talking about when it comes to literature. His unorthodox tangents are brilliant bc they all end up relating to the material somehow. People who complain that he's not organized enough need to learn to think outside the box. Love him!!
Granger is one of the coolest teachers that i have had at state. he takes attendance, but it doesn't really matter except for the fact that there are daily quizzes. paper and a final. goes off on tangents, but they are always interesting, and it made me never want to miss class, except for when i was hung over on a few fridays... take his class
He's an interesting guy that goes off on funny tangents. Makes a boring class tolerable. Lots of work and reading, theory is boring. Quizzes after each reading (which is almost every class) but they don't count much. Knows what he is talking about and is willing to help. Could explain theory better though.
Great guy and very interested in the material. Yes, he does go off on funny tangents but he's very approachable and he's not so anchored in his own thoughts about the material covered. He is very open to differing interpretations of the assigned readings. Daily quizzes (easy). One 5 page midterm (so-so) and a final (easy). I Got an A.
best teacher at sdsu. if you are an english major, you need to take a class with prof. Granger. He loves literature and it shows in his lectures. He will push you to write great papers. A funny dude, keeps the subject interesting and makes for a fast class.
Had him for 2 classes. He is so disorganized and unclear that he becomes useless as far as learning. You are pretty much own your own for learning the test. Don't expect insightful interpretations from him, just some weird story that barely relates to the text. Come to class every day, DO THE READING, and visit him to discuss your paper. Easy A.
granger is the worst professor I've had at state. He is completely unorganized and does not actually teach anything about the material. goes off on strange tangents. easy A if you sit in the front and bring him candy. if you are interested in learning or getting the grade you deserve for doing the work, don't take his classes. disappointing.
He is fantastic!!!! Extremely eccentric but if you pay attention he brings english literature to life. He's animated and makes an hour long class feel like ten minutes. I've taken him for two classes, put in effort, had a good time and ended up with A's in both. TAKE HIM!
Granger is very eccentric and hilarious; he's witty yet a little off-balance. He was a great teacher..very committed, easy to talk to, and very funny. He's a sweet guy and you have to do the readings. He takes attendance so go as much as possible and read everything and you will get an A or B. Great class!
Interesting guy... does go on tangents quite a bit, but at least it's usually amusing. Knows his stuff, but I just couldn't get into any of the books he chose. Also, a novel a week was a little much at times (especially with other classes that have a similar workload). Not a bad class, but I would look for a different one if I had the option.
The reading for the class is very extensive, considering youre probably taking the class as an english major and have a million other things to read. Reading is required as quizzes are a huge part of your grade and there's a quiz everyday, therefore attendance is required as well.
Professor Granger is the worst teacher I have had at State. He is very unorganized and scattered; half the time he went on tangents completely irrelevant to what we were talking about in class. He also made it very unclear as to what he was looking for in the term paper. After having an A the entire semester he gave me a C in the class. STAY AWAY!
Chill guy. You have to go and talk to him about the essay, to make sure you're going the right direction, because he doesn't really give any specific guidelines. It's annoying that there are quizzes at the beginning of every class so you have to keep up with readings. If you're not a literature enthusiast, you will definitely hate Granger
This lectures are useless. You're better off reading sparknotes. His quizzes don't demonstrate if a person read the book. His quiz questions are empty and usually a tiny detail in a really long novel. He is unclear of what he wants in a paper. But you get to submit a rough draft and recieve helpful feedback. Not a great professor. Useless.
Granger is my definition of an epic English professor. You can feel how passionate he is about what he teaches, and for those who share a similar passion, it makes the experience amazing. I don't blame people for not understanding him because it really is hit or miss, but definitely was a perfect teacher for me. Highly recommend.
The book selection was fair. More reading than most classes. His lectures were very random. The quiz scores didn't really make sense. Overall it was ok, but I wouldn't recommend him.
His lectures are useless. Quizzes are unfair, not to mention he had a bad attitude for the majority of the semester. I wanted to like him, I really did! But let's not confuse chill with apathetic. I used to dread attending his class. In short, if I never see Granger again it will be too soon.
professor granger has a fascinating and unique mind that he shares freely with his student. yes he tends to drift onto random topics, but everything that comes out of his mouth is important and somehow relevant to the class. he encourages creativity and motivates you to think outside the box. class is always rewarding, if not fun. brilliant man.
i've taken this professor for a few courses, each one has been a new experience. he interacts with everyone in the classroom; avoiding eye contact won't save you, but it's what makes his classes so intimate and comfortable. his quizzes are easy if you do the readings; that's the point of them. you'll learn a lot, read great works, and have fun
Pretty interesting teacher. Has a term paper due at the end of the semester and it's pretty brutal (8-10 pages). I took this class because I'm a film minor and the class was called "Literature and Film," had nothing really to do with literature- more about the films he thought were important to know
Many people do not like the way he teaches because of his random tangents, but the guy is very helpful and interesting. Go to his office hours if you are not getting the grade you want and he will explain what you need to do. Lots of reading, daily quizzes, 3 short essays and one 10pg paper. Go to class, ask him for advice and you will pass.
Professor Granger is very laid back and extremely nice. He does give DAILY reading quizes and sparksnotes doesn't help. his discussions are always on topic and very interesting. It was a great class, and he makes himself very available to help you if you need it. I would definately recommend him to anyone and everyone! Plus the books were Great!!
Granger picks a lot of interesting readings. There are daily quizzes based off of surface reading, so high grades for that are easy as long as you read. Usually reading is not too long per night. His lectures are somewhat scattered and unintelligible. Hard to know what he is looking for.
He is a total nut, but his teaching style works. There isn't much to take away from his lectures. All he cares about is that you read. As others have said, he does DAILY reading quizzes so it is very important that you keep up reading (and go to class). Also, 2 short response papers and a 7-8 page term paper for a final makes up most of your grade.
His teaching style is near non-existant and attempts to help in a way the is scattered and confusing. If you must take the class, find a summer course. Some like him, most don't. Up to you to decide. Personally. Never again.
took this class as a substitute for Eng220. reading quiz scheduled every class and he curves your overall grade in the class. 2 papers, count as midterm and final. he doesn't give a prompt for these so you just bs using the reading. got an A on the first one B on the second with very little effort. Buy the books of amazon and then sell back to sdsu
I'll admit I had such a teacher crush on this guy...he was so passionate about the readings and so open with his interpretations it was awesome! He gave some optimistic views I never would have considered before! And I thought he was hilarious...but some people were butthurt that he wasn't a rigid organized lamo...
Granger is an awesome prof. be prepared to read a lot in his course, we had daily 5 question reading quizzes, 2 papers and a final. I loved this class, he is super laid back and chill
Granger is a great professor. Attendance is mandatory, but the lectures are worth it. Reading is a must, because there are quizzes daily. His passion for what he's teaching created an interest in the literature, even some of the confusing stuff. He will help you with your papers. Worth it!
Great relevant readings. He focuses on actually teaching you how to analyze a reading from different perspectives and learn how to truly understand a book. He is one of the very few teachers that has taught me skills I will actually use for the rest of my life unlike other teachers where you forget what you learned by the next semester.
Easily the best teacher I have ever had. Very engaging, funny and friendly. Extremely helpful and interested in getting you to succeed. An easy grader, just do the reading and show up to class. A great person and professor.
Granger is really a great teacher. He selects very interesting things to read, and gives daily quizzes so attendance is mandatory. The quizzes are pretty easy as long as you do the reading. Amusing man, and very encouraging. I would definitely take him again.
So I loved and hated this class. I had the 2 hour Monday class and it got boring after an hour... BUT the readings were great! I loved his chill attitude and class consists of weekly quizzes, 2 essays, 1 final paper (no prompt) and ALOT or reading. He boosts your grade up a lot too. He is sort of a laid back hippy, with a love for books.
Fantastic professor! He is interesting and intelligent and is always getting you to think about things in a different way. Reading is essential to getting an A, but the books are interesting and the reading is not excessive. One of the best professors at State! Just go to class, do the reading and pay attention.
He is so boring, the class is easy but he takes attendance which sucks. The class is boring and pointless, I have not learned anything but I have an A+. Do it for the A
He is an easy grader but his entire class period is pointless yet mandatory. He assigns books that are necessary to read and take a hour or more a night. A pretty easy class but definitely not first choice. His term paper is very unspecific and no prompts.. (by textbook i mean the assigned readings or books)
Easy, easy, easy. He assigned super easy, interesting books, and gives even easier reading quizzes on them. I missed a few quizzes, and still got and "A to the third power." I wrote the term paper in 3 hours and got an A as well. Lectures seem to drag on sometimes, but the class is worth it.
A bit of an unorganized, easily persuaded and genuinely interested personality made Granger and his class an interesting experience. Try to keep up with the readings however you can and pay attention in the discussion part of lectures if you're lost or didn't read, it helps. His class structure and speaking habits can be tricky but try to have fun.
Very eccentric dude but he truly cares about the material. Assigns a lot of reading and then the next class is just a discussion about the reading with the occasional quiz to start the class. He's really strange but in a funny way and he has a good heart. You will get what you put in.
Readings are long and the daily quizzes are specific; I recommend taking notes while you read. The class is mostly discussion-based and you don't have to participate much. Half of your grade is from the quizzes and the other half is from the no-prompt, 6-page essay you have to write at the end of the semester. The books are great though.
Disorganized and his constant daily reading quizzes (which are worth 50% of your overall grade) are overloaded with questions that don't help you learn he material, and his lectures are scatterbrained. If you hate quizzes, you will most likely hate this class. Hardly clear on what he wants. I recommend avoiding if you can.
Definitely one of the worst instructors I've ever had in my entire academic life! Constant pop quizzes with questions that make no sense, rude during office hours, and the final is all over the place. Definitely avoid if you can but if you have to take him, make sure to have coffee or energy drink to keep you awake during his disorganized lectures.
