Composition was super boring before I took Guelcher's class. Now I love it. I wish VC offered a Composition major. He's the best. He really gets the best out of the students.

Great teacher. I hated english classes but he was interesting and the papers were not plain, boring topics. He kept me interested and made the class enjoyable.

He can be flexible and understanding but does NOT like slackers, DO YOUR WORK. Very enthusiastic instructor, not boring. Good topics for assignments. Disappointed I can't take his class this semester because he is on my top 3. I strongly recommend.

He's awesome. Sometimes class work is overloading but Dr. Guelcher is always understanding and works everything out with you. We talk a lot in class with the teacher and with our peers. Its a good place to get to know people.

Would definitely take again. Interesting assignments and readings. Make sure to contribute to class discussions. Always available to help during office hours (and through email). Very approachable and funny. I dreaded taking English until this class.

One of my favorite teachers. It's generally an easy classif you really put the time in, you will definitely get an "A", as well as become 300% better at writing. In all it was a very interesting class because of how he lets everyone be involved and gives interesting topics to write about. Expect to do all his essays and meet all draft deadlines. His in class essays aren't the hardest nor the easiest but he will give you time to prepare which is very nice. 3 essays and 3 inclass essays and 2 books to read.

Dr. Guelcher was helpful, supportive, kind, and the adjectives go on and on.... Overall take his class, he transforms your writing while making you feel confident about your writing. Never have I had a teacher do that. I am taking him again next semester because his class is just fantastic.

John is an amazing teacher, he caters to every student's needs and is also available outside of class for help. You work on 3 papers all semester, you are assigned to work on a draft then make changes to them throughout the semester. DO ALL YOUR DRAFTS ON TIME, show up and you'll be fine. No textbook, you do a paperback book though.

This was an amazing class. The lectures can be long, especially when you've had a long morning. It helps if you get involved with the conversation, if not you'll just sit there like "where is this going?" Take your papers to him, for God's sake. It's helpful and you'll get killer feedback. If you want to do well just put in the effort. Simple.

I have never looked forward to any English class before. There is just a magical way Dr. Guelcher teaches that will improve your writing slowly and building upon the previous lesson. He will also give you very good advice in which directions to take your paper.

I loved Dr. Guelcher! He's very open-minded when it comes to your writing. He won't just give you an topic and an outline, instead he kind of lets you develop your own writing style. Be prepared for group projects!!

So far he is my favorite teacher ever. He makes his class interesting all the time, talk to the students about their work, and he is very funny. He motivates students to write, to enjoy writing, and to have fun. This teacher is the best English teacher out there.

This was by far the best English teacher I have taken and I look forward taking him for my other English courses. He was very helpful in writing gym essays and giving feedback to your papers. The books are very interesting to read. Don't show up to class and you may miss lots of information to help write your paper.

The only thing to be aware of is his rants. They're not bad, sometimes they have a point but other times they can lose me.

Dr. Guelcher is such a helpful professor. He really wants you to succeed and learn how to write great essays. I have never had a professor who takes the time to sit with you and help you improve your essays. He gives you positive feedback as well. Ask him for help if you ever have trouble. It will really benefit your essays a lot.

Professor Guelcher is the best English teacher I had ever taken before. He cares about his students and tries to help you on what you need help on. Get ready to read two different types of books. If you show up to class and do the assignments, you can get an easy A or B. I got a B in his class.

I give Guelcher a 10 across the board. He is a great teacher and I've taken English with him since the beginning with one more class left and guess who I'm taking it with! I feel a couple of teachers I've had could learn a thing or two from him. Keep up the good work Guelch and see you next semester.

Professor Guelcher was the best professor I've taken at VC, hands down. Explains every assignment clearly, gives excellent feedback, makes you be excited to actually come to class. Definitely taking him again! plus he deserves his chili peppers full ;)

Highly recommended. Knows his stuff and very easy to talk to. Don't hesitate to visit office hours and get as much feedback as possible. Don't procrastinate. Essays are clear on what he wants. Easy to conversate with as if he were a good friend. He's caring and funny. A few random tangents, but usually are funny and have valid points. great class.

The last three months really matter if you procrastinate. Their is 3 essays you need to write, and about 4 in class essays. I would recommend visiting the teacher after your second paper, and go to the writing center during your last half of the semester.

Dr. Guelcher is a very respectful professor. He lets you revise your essays as many times as you want. he knows how to keep the class ingaed in the writing process. i recommend this professor, He is VERY TIGHT!

Professor Guelcher is a cool guy. You got three fat essays, group paper, and a presentation. Its a chill class but if you procrastinate you're screwed. I can actually write essays efficiently now and I'm stoked I took this class.

Prof. G ,is a top notch instructor.I am a better writer in all my classes from his teaching. His topics are meaningful, interesting and engaging. He's down to earth n funny,reaching out to all the students with care. A good soul n brilliant in his field. A good amount of reading and writing I found enjoyable.I would definitely take him again.

He makes us read an excessive amount of books, but most of them are pretty good books. He also makes us read a variety of genres so it's not too bad. Only two big essays and 2 page papers almost every week which helped my writing skills.

Mr. Guelcher is an awesome professor. He does not have a final test, the final consists of 2 in class essays. He clarifies if you do not understand something. He is very open to help any student that is struggling. There is only 3 essay for the semester. Topics of the essays are interesting which makes it easier to write about.

John is a great teacher ! Hes very passionate about the subject and you can see it in his assignments. He goes over reading and helps you with papers . He also doesn't make you feel dumb when you are trying to connect to the reading which is a total plus for me . Some of the reading was hard for me but I got through it !! I would recommend him !

Awesome professor. It's a reading heavy class, but the readings are interesting. He really works with you on your writing, doesn't belittle or undermine you, but genuinely wants to help you improve. Super chill and funny dude also. Actually replies back to your emails and can be reached outside the class room.

Guelcher is awesome. but we were given a lot of papers and they overlap each other and the reading and attendance are crucial. I would recommend him if you're an English major and/or if you're not taking a lot of units. But he gives feedback that is very helpful and only makes you a better writer.

John is truly a great teacher and I really enjoyed taking his class. I'm a big reader so I didn't mind at all the amount of reading that had to be done. Some other students felt differently. The grading is a little bit different but is thoroughly explained several times. The essays are where he looks the most, so be diligent to do your best.

Well I do have to say by far this is the best English I have I ever attend. I think all adv composition classes should be tough like how Dr. Guelcher teaches. He meet class with flexibility in understanding that all students have different class besides ENGL V01C. High recommend

The reading in the class definitely heavy; that being said, most essays are based upon the books so it's crucial you read them. I definitely feel like I became a better writer after the course, and definitely a better thinker. Prof. definitely has a great sense of humor and cares deeply for his students. Definitely would recommend to anyone.

During my time taking Guelchers VO1C class I learned to be a better writer and thinker. Not only was he an easy professor to listen to he brings up good points in his lectures and he is a very cool, and fun person to be around. I honestly wish I could take more classes with him. Anyone thinking about taking his class, DO IT!

Dr. Guelcher was the absolute best professor I have ever had! He is extremely caring, down to earth, and always there if you need him. You will write essays that overlap each other but it is absolutely do-able. I became a much better writer because of him! If I could take his class 10 more times I would in a heartbeat!

Dr. Guelcher is super down-to-earth. Lectures are easy-going and he sometimes offers space for thought-provoking dialogue. Yes, theres a good amount of reading in V01C, and as a non-reader myself even I found the reading enjoyable and worthwhile. You get to choose the level of difficulty for the essays. Fun class for them deep-thinkers. WORTH IT!

Dr. Guelcher is such an inspiring teacher. He actually expanded my own library. The grading is 110% He gives so much feed back and support. Don't ever hesitate to ask him for help, his opinion or any questions in general. Its very important that you do not miss class or it'll feel like you missed a whole month load of reading. I am very thankful.

Simply amazing! The class is difficult due to the philosophical subject matter, however, it's widely applicable to different academic disciplines making it essential for all students. This class is reading heavy and the papers aren't light either. If you prefer in-class writings the midterm and final will offer a break from the research papers.

Dr. Guelcher is a must ! I have taken him for all my English courses at VC. He's not an easy teacher by any means, but a great one. Your grade for the class will reflect with how much work you put in. Work hard and do the readings you will get an A. Slack off you can easily finish with a C. A great teacher but even better person.

Honestly the best professor I've ever had. He's an amazing person with an even better personality. This was the one class I genuinely enjoyed and looked forward to attending. He's an incredibly sarcastic person who, if you can take a joke, will crack you up. Even better he can take jokes too.

Dr. Guelcher is one of my favorite professors at VC. Initially, I was very intimidated by seeing the reading we'd be doing, but he made it approachable. Assignments consist mainly of discussion board prompts and essays. Overall, Dr. Guelcher is amazingly caring, kind and inspiring and has amazing experiences to share. If you care, he will too!

12/10 chill dude. If you keep up with assignments as they are given youll have no trouble getting an A. Out of the 3 papers youll write youre given clear criteria for each draft thats due. kinda talks a lot though

Because of the pandemic, this class was totally online. Dr. Guelcher made sure we all learned as if we were in his classroom. He gave daily lectures, presented two podcasts each week, and posted all those videos for anyone to see who was not able to meet in person. He is equitable and interesting. He cares.

Guelcher is such a great teacher. He is down to earth, very approachable and makes the class fun. There are two major papers assigned, and a few smaller writing assignments to prep you for the papers. As long as you show up and aren't afraid to ask for help this class should be no problem. I will be taking V01C with him as well.

Great class! Professor Guelcher is very approachable and gives very clear instructions and feedback. Zoom meetings for questions and lectures, if you couldnt make them they were recorded and accessible at any time. Two major papers with 3 drafts each, which really help you put together a polished final draft. 10/10 recommend taking this class!

Professor Guelcher was one of my favorite professors that I have taken at VC. He is clear in what he requires and how to succeed in his class. Very easy A if you just do your work, which there is not a lot of (discussions weekly with 2 essays in total.) Great person and professor, would definitely take it again.

He gives some small assignments along with two main papers + a group project.Essays and group projects make me nervous but he gives good feedback and lots of time to finish them.Don't be afraid to ask questions, he's probably the most approachable professor I've had.He's funny too and it's nice to have a little giggle once in a while at school.

Amazing Professor, was always very clear with his expectations for papers and assignments. Had engaging lectures and allowed ample room for students to give input. The papers are fairly daunting, but he would always spend at least one class period going over prompt and allowing students to ask the any questions they had. Was a fun environment.

I took an English V01A class with him prior to the V01C and he's the kind of professor that made me enjoy school for the first time after 12 years of education. The way he teaches is fun, gives extra credit & he's great at giving help and feedack. He cares and wants students to do well. I always left the class feeling like I got something out of it

There two big papers and one group project which were the majority of the work with some homework assignments that tie into your papers. You build on your papers and do multiple drafts which is really helpful for those who struggle with writing. There are plenty of EC opportunities.

Professor Guelcher is a fantastic English teacher. He only assigns two papers and a group project - and you get to choose the prompt for the final paper. It's clear that he wants his students to succeed and actually like writing, and I think he accomplishes that well.

I took V01A and V01C with him. He's like the first professor in 12+ years of education that made me enjoy school. Is super helpful, gives feedback, extra credit and not a ton of assignments. The way he teaches is fun and makes you feel included. I always left class feeling like I got something new and useful out of it. Can't recommend him enough

There are alot of professors out there who give you the work but none of the education. Engagement is important to the learning experience and Guelcher does that very well. There are no waisted assignments in this class and everything teaches you something of value. A very fair grader who genuinely wants his students to succeed.

He was the first teacher that made me enjoy writing. He created an open and welcoming class environment where everyone felt included and able to speak their opinion. I left his class everyday with a stronger understanding of not only myself but that of the world as well. I would definitely recommend this class to everyone.

Class isn't difficult. The professor gives feedback on the work we are assigned to do. Gives us advice on the work assigned to us. The lectures in class are very clear. Homework consist of essays and reading. The reading isn't a lot nor difficult and he explains how to do the essays.

I took Dr. Guelcher's English this fall and really enjoyed it. As a guy who is not a huge fan of English class and is not a great writer this class was both interesting and improved my writing quite a bit. Definitely recommend this class!

I took this class over the summer, where we condensed a 16/18 week course into 4, so it was a incredibly fast paced, but I really wish I could have taken it for the whole 18. Mr. Guelcher responds quickly, thorough with his expectations, and even for a 4 week course, he didn't give you an unreasonable amount of work.

Professor Guelcher is engaging, hilarious, and supportive. The assignments in this class are clear, to the point, and purposeful. He doesn't assign busy work, and if he does it's usually just for you to interact with other students. The classroom environment is also outstanding, as he makes class fun and interactive.

Amazing professor. He does assign quite a bit of homework especially at first, prepare to read. However, he preps you for every assignment given, he's very clear in grading criteria, he makes every lecture engaging and hilarious. He takes the time to get to know each student personally. He responds to emails right away and is eager to help. 10/10

I don't know which one of you lied of this class being easy, it is one of the toughest classes I've ever taken but the work that is given. He's a great professor just a harsh grader, he knows exactly what he wants so be prepared. Also lots of reading but the books are interesting!

I took Guelcher's VO1A English class last semester and found myself inspired from such a simple class like the basic's of writing. I am now taking his VO1C class and I love it even more. From the values and morals he shares and overall view of Daoism including the material we interact with in class I really enjoy and find worth while.

Super awesome and chill professor, felt comfortable enough to ask him questions without feeling judge! If he sees you trying he'll work with you as well. Wrote 3 papers, 2 graded by a panel and 1 graded by him. Lenient on late work except drafts/final drafts. Extra credit if you go to the tutoring center. Highly recommend

Super engaging and meets you where you are! The workload is very manageable. If you love English, there are so many opportunities to grow and learn, but if you're not a fan of English, you can still skate by and walk away with something valuable. The curriculum is actually interesting and never feels like a waste of time. he's awesome!! :)
