COOL TEACHER...DOWN TO EARTH! ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP STUDENTS. ALSO WILL MAKE SMALL TALK WITH STUDENTS. HE'S THE MAN!
Dr. Gum is an awesome teacher. He is very intelligent and very cool. He makes stats as interesting as possible.
Great teacher, really interested in teaching this class...bonus to you if you like boats!!
He really is a great prof. Makes everything VERY clear and easy to understand, and will go over anything with you that you have a hard time with. Very student-success oriented and great guy personally. A+ :)
Great professor. I personally did not do well in his class but that was at the fault of myself. He explains things very well, and has great examples to help you relate. Good professor, tough course.
oh no..Dr G is nice, but a rambler and a nut job. he likes to talk about women and boats and he loves jessica simpson. ugh
VERY GOOD TEACHER. TOUGH CLASS, BUT HE IS ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP IF YOU NEED IT.
Fair, but somewhat goofy. Ok to retest if you miss one. He does not try to trick you on exams. It is what it is. He test how he teaches.
He is a great teacher. Just follow the steps he gives you and you will be fine. Don't try and figure out and understand every little detail, or you will get lost. Very nice guy.
Remember that this IS a math class and you WILL be expected to go to every class (I did), and do homework every week to make sure you fully understand the concept and are ready to move on to the next (I did not). Dr. Gum is a great instructor and relates everything to real life--"its a big deal".
This is a one of a kind teacher. He is very approachable and helpful in and outside of class. Tends to ramble but he is entertaining when doing so. Make sure you understand EXACTLY what he's talking about in class and what he wants on quizes. He is pretty particular about grading.
He is very helpful but he often deviates from the book work. His tests are based on class examples. He's got great anecdotes and application of class work from real-world experience.
Likes to tell stories which are quite entertaining. Don't cover many topics that he consider non-essential.
Absolutely one of the best professors! Go to class, take good notes on the problems he gives in class, and study problems for the exams. Exams are exactly like problems taught in class.
Unstructured teaching style, doesn't use book to supplement undertanding of material.Highly subjective in his grading policy, very unclear as to his expectations making his project and tests extremly difficult. Does not answer emails, is hard to find during his listed appointment hours, and not very helpful when he is found.AVOID taking if u can
Worst Prof @USF-St pete!! Barly passed this class, even though I made's A's in my other classes. He does not answer questions, and only half explains things when he does.you never know what he wants and how he wants it (test answers & project). He is VERY selective about who he will help, if you are not one of his *pets* you are on your own. AVOID!
Mr. Gum is a very good teacher. He does a great job of taking something difficlut and making it easier to understand. Everything comes straight from his class lectures, so try not to miss any. Highly recommend.
Typical ego driven southern personality. My advise is to make him the center of the universe and you will get the help you need. Those who think alot of themselves enjoy the atention!
This guy makes stats understandable. I am no good at this stuff and I get it! Sometimes he is unclear but if you're patient, he'll explain. His tests are not easy but not hard either. I recommend him and I'm not a "pet".
He's the guy that drives the Jeep on Green Acres! (Hank Kimball) He wins the award for "most tangent conversations". Honestly, I liked the southern gentilism and the way class was conducted. It has a real-world and common sense feel without being killed by techno-jargon. Projects were easy. Tests can be tough - use own formula sheet!!
Exceptional statistics teacher, focusing on interpreting results in real world situations (the computer does the computations, not you); required to provide your answers in a specified format on exams and deducts points for deviating from the format. Project was graded w/o feedback. Final can be skipped w/o penalty if you're happy w/grade.
Great Guy. Highly reccomended!!
I would take him again. He is a great teacher. He doesn't really use the book. His exams are exactly how he teaches you in class. The project is really easy too.
Nice guy. Gets frustrated if you ask too many questions. Pay very close attention in class and take good notes, because everything he says will be on the tests! The CD-ROM in the textbook gave me a better understanding of the material; especially the PowerPoint presentations. Start your project ASAP; don't procrastinate!
This guy was fun to watch in action! He obviously enjoys his work. I am not too good at stats but I understood it when he related it to his work experience. He's had about a thousand jobs!
Best Professor in the world!!! Cares about his students and makes sure you inderstand the material, very interesting! Talk about Boats!!!
WARNING: Answer all exam questions THOROUGHLY using complete plain-English sentences or he'll deduct points. Instructor will have a MAJOR HISSY FIT if your cell phone goes off. Gets MAD if you talk. He grades hard on the project & is VERY picky about making sure no one cheats on exams. No: +/- grades, curves, extra credit, group work.
Took Dr. Gum for summer A. I had limited background in Stats and was able to get a high B with little effort. He was available for any questions and showed how this course can apply to everday things. Dr. Gum is overall the best professor I have had at USF. Buy the program and not the book.
Never used the $200 book. Doesn't keep you the whole 3 hrs; maybe 1-1.5. Project is excellent way to boost grade. Tests are about 3 questions where you explain a diagram for 1.5 hrs. Nice guy but really gets annoyed when you talk in class.
Love this guy! Folksy mannerisms and enjoys telling stories about cars, boats, technology - totally uses up class time doing so but doesn't penalize the students. VERY straightforward exams, if you can do the HW you're golden. Wish he taught more.
Gum is a cool guy who is pretty clear on what you need to know, and if you were in class for the 1.5 hours and you got the notes, your solid and bound for an A. Just get on his good side because he seems like the guy who plays favorites.
Easy, easy, easy! Take this guy if you can. Don't freak out the first day, it will get easier every minute. Don't argue with him and talk about fishing. You will get an A+.
He teaches you what you need to know for the exams. He is a sports buff. If you can do the HW and class problems, you will do good on tests. The project is not too difficult, make it very flashy and you should do well.
Love this teacher. Pay attention in class and the tests are a breeze. Only 3 question tests. Have to know what you are doing. Dont waste your money on the text book. You will never use it except for homework if you choose to do it. Only two test and one project. Final is optional. EASY EASY EASY. Take his class.
I'd recommend this professor. Go to class and listen to the lectures. The exams are easy. The professor explains the topics thoroughly.
LOVE HIM. TAKE HIM NOW. Prob one of the sweetest people ever; always willing to help and explain things in a way that you can understand them. I DETESTED Stats I, and hardly remembered anything, and he made it all make sense to me. DO NOT talk in class, ask questions if you don't understand something, have FUN, and be FUNNY. Such a great class!

I hated Stat1-was weary of Stat2. This prof is great. He explains everything thouroughly and to the point. 2 tests and 1 project- easy if you know the material. final is optional-dont take it. follow along in class- study and do the homework questions and you will ace the tests. he makes the subject interesting. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!
Just dont take class in the summer and you should be fine. grades projects against all students.. so you never know what your gunna get. Talks sort of fast, and if you ask him to repeat something, he wont.
So Nice and such a funny guy! He made statistics easy and understandable, without all the nonsense!
One word, Horrible!
By far, the best professor I've had at USF. His goal is really to get you to understand! I didn't know Stat 1 at all and managed to get an A in his class! Take this professor!!
He's one of the best professors on campus, as he explains everything and writes evrything down on the blackboard. He doesn't like stupid questions, but he's always available in the end of the class, and is extremely helpful. 2 midterms and project, optional final. He's very nice as a person. I highly recommend.
Dr. Gum is great. He goes through every step on the wipe off board so you don't get lost. He makes class fun and enjoyable. He is always available to help before and after school. Very vocal and opinionated but definitely a great professor.
Take Gum. I got a C in business stats I and now I've got an A thus far in Business stats II. Gum gives you everything you need to know for the exam, memorize and you'll do great
2 exams and optional final. He makes expectations crystal clear, describes topics well. You memorize steps to take, and work them out on a 3 question exam. VERY straightforward and clear. Recommended!!
He is a no nonsense kind of Professor. I thought he was GREAT!!!!. Whatever he teaches will be in the exam. You have two exams and the final is optional. Do the homework problems and take notes and you can score an A
stats2...he is a great teacher with real world experience (tells many stories)...HATES STUPID QUESTIONS(which is understandable) this is a college course, and he makes it very simple so if you dont get it...go back to college algebra bud!! Dr Gum is the BEST!! & very funny sweet guy :)
Funny professor. Tells a lot of stories, but they all somehow relate. Only keeps you for about an hour to an hour an a half. Definitely recommend. Makes the material simple to understand. Grade is based only on your exams.
Gum is a great prof. VERY clear on expectations. 2 exams, optional final. Both exams very straight forward. Easy. Fun stories that relate to stats (although lengthy) but I was never in class more that 1.5 hours. EASY A if you pay attention. He's more than willing to help, don't ask stupid questions though. He doesn't respond well. Loved this class!
He makes you feel stupid for asking a question. I mean the comments below are ridiculous.. "go back to college algebra" if you have a "stupid question." Some people may not know what the "most common type of engine in a lawn mower" is and that was a question he asked this semester in stats that was "common sense." He rambles too.
It's a hard class but he explains very well. The most fun I've had in a class at USF. Do the homework and you will surely get an A.
What happened to "No question is a stupid question?" This is a mathematical subject and the average person isn't as "blessed" in the subject as Dr. Gum. However, he treats you horribly if you ask a question that he thinks you should know from your earlier math classes. He is a rude teacher. I would not take him.
He isn't that bad, but still shouldn't be teaching a difficult subject. I understand where some people would get frustrated if he called them out on not knowing something. Also, TURN YOUR CELL PHONE OFF. He will embarrass you.
I was dreading taking this class but professor Gum explained everything very well and the two exams were straight from the notes in class and the homework. His tests are hard but if you go to class you shouldn't have a problem. Overall a great professor!
The most fun I've had at USF learning. Do the homework. If you have questions, stay after and he is more than happy to help you understand. CELL PHONES are not apart of the class and to know that he wants them off is GREAT. I am there to listen to him and learn!! He makes this class very interesting, relevant and understandable. Great Professor!
Dr. Gum's 2nd Summer session- Due to his mistake of miscalculating the days that were left in the semester he taught us ALL of the material for the 2nd exam in 1 day!! So we had 1 day of class to learn 3 concepts. I understand it's a summer course but I've never experienced a teacher that would do this to their students.
Good teacher. Tells some good stories and real life examples to make the material more interesting and relevant. The final exam is not required and only recommended if your grade may need some help. Keeps the class well controlled. Pay attention, keep quiet, and take good notes. Allowed a sheet with formulas for the tests.
This class was one of my favorite class. Professor Gum seems very mean at first, but he is straight forward about his test and class work. If you go to class, take notes and do your homework then you'll have no problem with the 2 test he gives. Test reflects on homework and notes in class. He is very strict on wording.
Dr. Gum is by far the BEST teacher ever! He is hilarious and makes every class enjoyable. He actually makes Statistics fun and worth learning. If you go to class and pay attention there is no reason why you should not get an A. He has a great way of explaining things and helps you understand when you will actually use the stuff. Highly recommend!
He gives 2 mandatory tests, only 3 questions on each and a optional final. He's very funny and nice. The only con I would say is that you can't mess up on tests or It'll be hard to get a good grade seeing that he only gives 3 questions on each test. I would recommend him!
Great Professor at USF! Whatever he teach, it will be in the test. You should NOT be afraid to question him in class or at his office hours. He sometimes sounds like "TIGER" :) but he has a beautiful heart.Going to class, taking good notes and doing Homework MANY TIMES, you will receive an A with smiles from him.
Good teacher. Attend class, take note, do your homework, then you will get an A for sure : )
Professor Gum is sooo funny. He tells stories and jokes that make class really interesting. All you really have to do is take notes, do homework, and take the exams. You have to really know what you're doing on the exams. He explains everything well, and doesn't waste your time with a million in-class examples.
No graded homework, if you mess up on one exam, your grade is doomed. He can be funny at times, but he makes a lot of errors. He also goes on patrol during exams, which can be pretty distracting. Also, do not ask "stupid" questions, he embarrassed quite a few students asking clarification-type questions.
Grade is made up of two tests and an optional final (cumulative). Each test is only three questions all from lectures but you may not know which specific sections. Regretted buying the book, it didn't help. Study the practice problems. Difficult subject material. Very funny but sometimes his stories got annoying when I was trying to learn.
He is very funny and keeps class interesting with his stories. The material is not hard but the tests are not easy.
I was nervous at the beginning of the semester when I found out the only grades in the class were 2 exams, with 3 questions each. But if you actually do the homework (which isn't graded, so a lot of people didn't), go to class, and study before the exams, an A is doable. He kind of tells a lot of stories, but never kept us the whole class.
Extremely interesting and helpful. Very fun class and I would take it again.
Don't bother learning how to use SPSS because tests are given with the computer work already done for you. 2nd test requires actual math. The hardest thing about it was remembering how to word things out in the exact way he wanted. Really though not that hard if you compare what he's asking to what other teachers require. 3rd exam optional
Dr. Gum is an amazing professor. He makes Business Statistics simple to comprehend. He gives two exams with the optional Final depending on how you do on the first two exams. Both exams are only 3 questions. He's very straight forward with what will be on the exams as he assigns homework problems that are almost identical to what he tests you on.
He's an ok guy, but grades very tough. There is no extra credit or curve. If you have a 69% in the class, you can bet your rear end he'll give you a 69% for your final grade. STUDY, STUDY, STUDY, and come to class. Your grade is based on 3 exams, all of which are 3 questions each. The final is optional, but double weighted if you take it.
Taking this class in the summer which I was leery of doing but so glad I did with Dr Gum. Relatively small amounts of hw, lectures never go the full time, and very clear on the material. He makes it easy to understand with business application. I was scared of only having 2 exams but they aren't awful if you come to class, do hw, and study.
AWESOME professor! Never did ONE hw problem. Study your in-class notes and it's an easy A. He is very clear on what he expects on exams so pay attention and DO NOT talk in class. He will def call you out.
Dr. Gum is a good teacher who knows a lot though obviously would rather teach engineering. He doesn't like a lot of questions and can get a bit snappy, but if you attend class and listen carefully and write everything down, the tests (the only 2 grades in the class) are just like class notes and homework. Textbook used only for non-graded homework.
He is the better option for stat 2. However he isn't a kind person and lacks all people skills. He is a tough grader. Don't make any mistakes (especially on sub numbers). Exam 1 was a bit harder than most students expected, so study a LOT. Exam 2 is harder material, but is more like the class examples and not bad! (Which was a relief).
DO THE HOMEWORK. He does not require that you do the homework, but the tests are literally almost identical.
LOVED DR. GUM! He teaches his way, NOT the books way, which is so much easier to comprehend. Loved his grouchy/humorous attitude. Do the HW, show up to class (he doesn't keep you the full 3 hours), and write everything out verbatim to how he writes it on the board. Finished the class 3 weeks early. What's there not to love about this guy?
so i decided to take him because i had no other choice. the class was one day a week for 2.75 min. but he only takes about an hour per lecture. Honestly if you do not go you will not pass. write down everything he writes down word for word because that's what he wants word for word on the exam. there are 2 exams that are 3 problems each. STUDY
Don't go to class? Definitely not going to pass. Dr. Gum is very fair. He makes it clear what is expected from the start. Tests are very similar to HW, which he tells you prior to the tests. Great guy, somewhat of a Drill Instructor demeanor, but is a great approachable professor.
Gumballs the man, make sure you pay attention and ask questions. He also loves basketball, so make sure you chirp him up about that... This was my last math class of college and I passed with a 70 without taking the final. #lit
If you can take someone else! Yes, you'll get out of class early but most won't learn much. Don't recommend!
Show up to class, do it and you can't fail. I HIGHLY recommend going to the tutors 2-3 hours before the test to review. I didn't do that the first time I took this class and got an F. I took it again over summer, visited the tutors only twice (before each test) and got A's on both tests. GO TO THE TUTORS!! Easy class, don't make it difficult
Dr. Gum is one of my favorite professors I've had at USFSP. He has a great sense of humor, he's very smart, and he has real world working experience so you learn how you could apply things from class. The content of QMB3200 isn't that hard if you pay attention in class and study
Dr. Gum simplifies complicated statistic concepts by solving real world problem step-by-step in his class. He only asks students to show up and take notes. Home works are optional. There are total 2 exams for the whole semester. 3 questions each very much like the examples he gives in the class. Make sure write down everything he writes. Easy A.
Dr. Gums class is very easy if you take good notes. Make sure you write down word for word. I highly recommend going to tutoring, this will help with little tips and memorization. Easy A if you spend the time.
bus and stats 2 was the easiest class. No hw, no quiz, only a midterm and a final with 3 problems each. BEFORE THE EXAM he does the exact problems on the board just different numbers
