Great teacher, really interesting class.
truly helpful prof who cares about students

great prof, liberal ideas, interesting teacher
Made me want to be a lawyer...
Very good at helping me read a 1000 page law book. Well enough at being Interactive. Did his best wtih 250 students. A fair lawyer.
John Hale is one of the most fascinating prof's I have ever had! He is so helpful and educated and defenitely has pushed me to go ahead and get my law degree...
John is good at teaching except that the cases he chooses and the way he analyzes them reflects his sexism. I do not like him because found him ****, manipulative and dishonest.
Couldn't ask for a more helpful or approachable teacher. Does anything for his students, and truly enjoys teaching the class. Very knowledgeable on the subject. Makes the material both interesting and understandable. Definitely a class one should take!
great prof!
Very boring and monotone. Hard to keep attention in his class. He makes multiple killings really boring, I'm not a sociopath, its just that boring in his classroom. Would not recommend to anyone.
Just a great all around prof. One of the best that I have had the privelage to encounter at Carleton to date. Nicest guy in the world, very concerned about his students and very dedicated to the course. His insiders view as a lawyer is a major bonus. I would definatly recommend him.
Very nice and interesting. He can get the whole class laughing with his stories. Explains material well. Lectures are very organized and the material is concrete and understandable. Don't bother reading the textbooks. Everything you need for the exam is from the lectures.
The nicest, most down-to-earth guy ever! Takes a practical 'law-school'approach to the course, as opposed to most other profs, which is so refreshing. I have no clue what the person who said it's boring in his classroom said. The stories he shares are so much fun.
If you like hands-on criminal law you'll love John. He's an execelent professor who teaches the class like a first year law school criminal class. You'll get out of this class knowing more about criminal law than most lawyers do.
The Best Law Prof. I have ever had a Carleton,he makes criminal law, really interesting, fun, and easy to understand, he's really funny, he did a draw for free textbooks, and he brings in treats, pay attention, go to class, get his notes from the internet and you will do well, he can also even go to court with him (because he is a defence lawyer!)
Excellent prof....nice guy who really cares about his students. He takes the time to e-mail the whole class alomst 2wicew a week for updates and his assignments are fair and not difdficult..We had an open book exam...what more can i say..greatest prof at Carleton
Wish I never took this class. If you are an average student, take this course and you'll do average. If you are an A student, expect B's. If you want to learn about the YCJA, just pick up the code because that is all he teaches you.
The best Professor i have ever had. Funny and easy to talk to. His classes were a breeze and exams are easier. Has some interesting guest lecturers for this class. However, bcos the YCJA is pretty new, we spent a lot of time on the code, but He's also very easy on the eyes.
Hale is possibly the best prof I've yet had at Carleton. He's funny, knows what he's talking about, and knows how to get the course materials across to students.
Best Prof ever! I have taken two of his courses so far and plan on taking all the ones he teaches! He cares about the students and does everything he can to be accomodating. He keeps his lectures interesting by telling the class about his past expierences while being a criminal lawyer
At first, I must admit, this prof didnt appeal to me. later when he's lectures became more interesting and his tone actually didnt make me want to sleep..I learned a lot! He's stories were pretty great,he emails were consistent.. He's exam was fantastic and the class doesnt have an attendence sheet..he also has his own website if you need it! great
Quite possibly the greatest prof I have ever had. I'm in my 4th year in Business Law and took this class as an elective. I learned a lot from him and his tone didn't put me to sleep like other professor's normally do. I learned a lot about Youth and Criminal Law (and I still remember it too). Highly suggest you take the course, you won't regret it!
Love love love him! He is very interesting and cares for his students. He brings in a ton of great guest lecturers. His exams are open book and extremely easy! HIGHLY recommended!
easy! he gives an open book midterm and final (worth 40% and 60%).
Awesome prof... Doesnt make you waste money on a textbook that you will never use (he told us we shouldn't buy it, LOL), and open book exams.
bring a pillow to the class
I'm confused to why people say they like him. His exams may be open book but dont let that fool you. He is tough, he is very specific and relevance isnt what is specific to him be careful on exams. Classes arent that important he posts lectures which screw you in the end. Not a good prof needs to be clearly with what he wants. Hard to do well.
A really nice guy. He certainly loves what he teaches. Did get pretty dry at times. Really goes above and beyond to make sure you do well.
Extremely easy prof. If you want an easy grade without really learning much this is the course for you. The exams are open book and he lets your higher mark on either the mid-term or final count for 60% while the other is 40%! Do the practice mid-terms and have the answers memorized and you'll get an automatic A. Classes are pointless after a while
Very nice, very helpful, I really like him. I've been learning a lot and he got me experience in law by bringing me to one of his trials, got to see him as a lawyer in action.
kind of boring voice, but i learned a lot. nicest guy ever and he's still pretty cool for his age. I wish this guy was my dad!
One of the nicest profs around, loved the material he was teaching, seemed to like the sexual assault cases the best but overall is a super nice guy :)
Great prof. Very interesting, knows his stuff, nice guy.
One of my absolute favourite professors for Carleton Law. He knowns his stuff, and makes the class extremely interesting. He is very helpful, and extremely friendly.
He was such an awesome prof.one of my favourites. He's assignment was easy but his final exam was challenging. He's exam was open book and worth 80%. He is lenient with marking. His class is enjoyable.
You can't get a better under grad prof in law at carleton. He is amazing!
He is a calm, down to earth professor with a lot of experience from the real world. He is very open-minded, expects you to do all work and will help you every step of the way. All you have to do is DO THE WORK. His sweet personality along with his teaching style will make you love any course you take with him.
One of my favourite profs at CU. Knowledgeable, helpful, and interesting. Exams are open book, but still difficult. He's very understanding if you have a problem. He encourages his students to sit in on his court cases downtown.
Extremely helpful professor with very clear knowledge in his field and knows exactly what he wants to communicate to his students. Highly recommended for any Law course
Great Proff! So nice and has a lot of experience in criminal law. You can do so well in the class if you just show up and take notes, exams are open book! and readings aren't essential. Highly recommend taking his courses cuz he's such a good proff, you learn a lot of interesting stuff too! Only criticism is that his quiet voice can be hard to hear
Absolutely phenomenal professor who really knows his stuff and loves what he does. Also one of the most helpful, approachable and down to earth guys you will ever meet. Had the pleasure of seeing him in action in a real court case. Exams are open book and very fair. As long as you are organized, you will do well in his class.
ABSOLUTELY THE BEST PROF EVER. ALWAYS RECOMMEND HIM 100%. And this is my fourth year at Carleton. He's amazing always there for his students and goes the extra mile to ensure his students success. Also has so much experience its always great listening to his stories especially since they are highly related to the material. LOVEEE THIS PROF
BEST PROF EVER!!!! by far the most enjoyable class i have ever took @ carleton. mr hale is a wonderful prof, great guy!
very nice guy , midterms and exams are open book
He's a very nice man - you can see he loves children and enjoys his job. He's very busy with his own work and clients so he's not easily available. He's very clam and relaxed so it makes class nice. Don't be fooled though, make sure you take good notes and organized notes. The exam is open book (midterm and final). I recommend him.
Brilliant contract professor bring his actual practice as a lawyer in context.Extremely understanding and dedicated. Selects intriguing guest speakers seeing how they can help benefit students connections in criminal justice. Take detailed notes since both exams are opened book and make an index.Helped every student with how he weighted the grades.
Great prof, took his class online. Clear and concise, answers any questions quickly. Even remarked a bunch of exams himself because the average was low. Gives you every chance to succeed in his class. Just two exams but theyre both open book. Use the practice exams and you'll be fine. I wish he taught another class I could take!
I took this course online and I yet to have my final. I prefer not to take law classes but I had to take it. All I have to say is that John Hale should get the teacher, person and father of the year every year!I wish all profs would be like that!!!
Best Professor I have ever had! And my area of study is not even law!! This is not the class to slack, while he provides everything you need in class, still take notes, read all that he gives and you will do very well. I can only hope that there are my professors out there who teach with passion and the experience that Hale has!
Very helpful prof, knows his law. A brilliant lawyer, teaches even outside of class. For instance takes students to Court.
Best teacher I've had at Carleton! Inspires me to actually learn. I recommend 100%
Amazing prof, deff recommend!! Just study his lecture notes and you will do amazing
Best prof ever!!!! Amazing prof, amazing lawyer.
Hale is a great lecturer which is important when taking a vod course. He has a lot of guest lecturers (with slides) which is great because you really get to see different aspects of the cjs in regards to youths. He provides plenty of resources (slides, notes) and open book exams. There's really no reason not to get an A.
The best prof I've had so far in Carleton. I'm a 2nd year student and I had to take 2 LAWS courses before this and HATED IT because the profs were terrible. But I have never been this interested in Law ever and am actually minoring in Law now all thanks to him. He is the greatest professor at Carleton and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you take his courses!!!
Very relaxed, calm and funny man. A pleasure to have as a professor. Explains all content very well and gives students tours of the court house and lets them watch his trials!! Can be very busy at times and may not reply to emails. Has open book exams! Overall, very nice man and great professor.
Don't be fooled by the open book exams, they are tough! He knows his stuff and while enthusiastic about the material covered in class, he can get a bit boringmonotone. I would take his class again because it is obvious he wants his students to do well and I appreciate that. The tests were hard but if you prepared then it should be an easy A-.
John was a great prof! He offers his students the chance to go to court with him (he's a lawyer) The lectures can be long but the material is interesting. Midterm and Exam are open book - but really long you still have to study!! He knows his stuff - and it's awesome to hear about the cases he's personally had which he relates to the material.
Literally my favourite prof at Carleton. He explains all concepts clearly with great examples, and is always looking to help his students in whatever way possible. Open book midterm and exam, worth 40% and 60%, whichever test you do best in will be worth 60%. Didn't think I'd enjoy the class, but he made it great!
John Hale is a great prof, he's always there for his students and answers to emails as quickly as possible. He introduces you to the real world and assures everyone understands the concepts. Wish he taught every class at carleton!
2 open book exams, 60/40. Tends to asks questions about guest lectures so be prepared. Seems like gave up on the class halfway through, last 2-3 lectures were almost strictly guest lectures where he didn't even show up. Classes usually run full 3 hours, but exams tend to be pretty easy if you come in prepared with all your notes.
- The course is literally the Youth Criminal Justice section of the Criminal Code, copied and pasted into slides and read in class - If you miss the class, you'll still pass -Don't miss guest lectures, because he does examine those - Open book midterm/exam, but don't underestimate, there is A LOT of info to go through (100+ slides/weekly)
Good easy class, Open book exam is Deceiving!
John Hale has a lot of experience in the legal field, he is a very successful defence lawyer. His classes are very practical - not about theory but about practical criminal law which was refreshing. His lectures can be tedious but easy enough to follow, important to attend as key information is explained. Midterm/Final are open book, but prepare!
John Hale is an amazing prof, he has sparked my interest and love for criminal law. He teaches alongside being a defence lawyer in which he is very experienced and successful. His lectures are long, but interesting and practical. His exams are open-book and completely fair if you prepare and organize your notes well. Would take again!
I have had John for multiple classes throughout my undergraduate degree at Carleton. He is infamous for open book exams and basically provides you with the notes. Very humble and kind guy, this is an easy course! Would definitely recommend.
Open book, open note exams. Super easy and he is such a sweet guy.
BEST PROF EVER. Literally if you need an interesting but pretty easy course take it with John. 2 open book exams and whichever you do better on is weighed more. His information is clear and easy to learn. He's the nicest person ever and also has amazing skin. 10/10
Awesome guy, he's a criminal defense lawyer by day so he is the perfect candidate to teach a course on criminal law. Criticism: he uses way to many slides (like 85 per lecture). Another criticism is that although the midterm is take home and the final is open book it is not as easy as it sounds, he is very particular about which cases you reference
10/10 would take again.
Great prof! Take his course if you get the chance!!!
The best instructor I have ever had in my time here at Carleton. Carleton is lucky to have him.
His lecture slides have way too much information on them, and it is extremely difficult to discern noteworthy material from the professor just trying to make a point. His exams are open book so I assume he's the type of prof that wants his students to do well, but its hard to recommend his class considering the poor structure of the lectures.
Best prof! He really uses his real life experience to teach and is so straight forward ! There is nothing theoretical all practical and can be actually used once you graduate ! Ive had him for criminal law and youth criminal law and I loved both. Lectures can be dry but he does his best to keep them interesting with a lot of factual examples
Really knowledgable... exams are open book and easy.
John is an amazing prof!!! He is kind and also brilliant and very experienced in law. His lectures can be dull but he explains everything perfectly. Dont need the textbooks if you come to class. Very easy to contact and takes great care when emailing. One of my favs Ive ever had. Take home midterm and open book final- not hard with good notes!
John was an amazing prof really knows his stuff as he is a practicing defence attorney. Open book midterm and final which was great definitely buy the textbook even the older version as he puts pages numbers up for that version as well. So many readings assigned but if you skim you'll be ok. Brought students to the courthouse a lot which was nice.
I LOVE JOHN HALE! It's my second year and he's the best professor by far. He is awkward-funny. He reminds me of Kevin from The Office. Pay attention in class don't worry about notes and lecture slides because he posts them anyways. Try to engage in what he's saying and you won't need to study too hard for the exam. FINAL WAS LONG :( Midterm supa ez
He is a good prof, very knowledgable. However, the "open book" midterm and final are not by any means easy. They were probably my most challenging exams, but if you went to every class and took very good notes then it helps A LOT. If you skip lecture and are missing the notes you will struggle. Buy the book, it helps on the midterm and final.
350 characters is not enough space to express how much of an amazing professor John is. He provides an amazing practical side to his teaching (which include plenty of hilarious stories from his practice). He is down to earth, funny, and caring. I feel sorry for people who do not get to take a class with John.
John is an awesome prof - his exams are very straight forward and not meant to trick you in any way. If you go to every class and take good notes there is no reason you should not get an A+ in this course. The guest lecturers that John brought in are tremendously helpful in illustrating the information to an applied context. Nothing bad to say!
What a Gem! This professor is my favorite. He's a practicing criminal lawyer who knows a lot of information and how to teach! His lectures are a bit long (3 hours - Weekly), but he explains all topics thoroughly. I advise you to attend all lectures and focus, and you'll do great. Take-home midterm and open book final. He's the best and CARES!
Honestly one of my favourite professors. He is super understanding, helpful, and a really nice guy. His lectures are very straight forward and he goes into much detail to make sure you understand the course material. Barely any readings, no assignments. You can tell he really has a passion for law & cares for his students. All around great class!
One of the best professors I've ever had. Clearly knows and loves his career and makes lectures enjoyable. He was super generous with quizzes and their time limits during the pandemic. Super caring and great at keeping communication lines open with the class about upcoming lectures and tests.
All I can say is that John Hale is the man, if you are unsure about taking him, throw out every uncertainty you have about him out the window as he is a true gem. He knows what he is talking about, and on top of that is extremely generous with quizzes. 10/10 prof at Carleton
attend the lectures and take good notes and you will do great he's such a good prof and had amazing guest lectures feels like he genuinely cares about teaching and wants his students to understand how stuff works in the CJS :-) would highly recommend
Prof Hale is amazing! He's handled everything with the pandemic so well. His lectures are really well done, the course structure is clear, and he goes above and beyond to make the course as accessible as possible. Just an amazing professor. I can't say enough good things. Absolutely 100% take him if you get the chance!!
Prof Hale is a good one. He is a verrrryyyy slow talker (you'll be double speeding the recordings for sure if you take him online) but he's so thorough and cares so much about student success. 3 tests and a final exam that is the same format as all the tests, so basically 4 tests. I learned so much in his class!
He's such a sweetheart! Lectures are a bit long, but the material he went through was interesting so I didn't really mind them. Makes a few jokes here and there and ensures you really understand the information being taught. I would 100% take him again and he made me become interested in becoming a parole officer! Make sure to add your own notes!
Weekly lectures can run a little long but very informative and he keeps things interesting. Its very clear he knows what hes talking about and is passionate about the material he teaches. Definitely recommend you take class with him if youre given the chance!
Never uploads lectures on time, always uploads then days after the actual scheduled time
great prof, very understanding and will help out however he can, sometimes posted lectures late but what can you expect from a practicing lawyer, tests were extremely easy and marked fairly, lectures very interesting but could be long, overall great dude and a very easy course, just watch the lectures!
Took a summer course and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Prof Hale posted slides and even shared his own lecture notes. His lectures were clear and easy to follow albeit a bit on the longer side. I definitely recommend this prof and would happily take another course with him.
I love prof Hale. He is the sweetest man and very knowledgeable in law. He travels sometimes for his work and so sometimes the lectures are online, but I don't mind. He goes from one class to another and delivers the same lecture with no complaints- this man deserves a raise. Definitely recommend taking his class.
The grading criteria for his class are very unclear, he's a nice person, but the grading seems unfair. I reviewed one of my quizzes mid-semester and found a number of mistakes in my grade. He emailed me back at the end of the semester, weeks later, saying he would change my grade (79% to 87%!!). Was just a very messy class, wouldn't take him again.
GOAT. Literally Saul Goodman Himself. Made me fall in love with the art of criminal defence. Takes students on court tours and trials. Class is just 4 big quizzes covering 3 lectures at a time each worth 30% except for the lowest mark at 10%. Open book, so use his notes and you will end up with an A or A+, no need to sweat out trying and studying.
He was really nice and he explained concepts well with real-life examples. He wants students to do well and goes above and beyond to help. The syllabus says textbooks are mandatory but you do not need them at all, and even if you want the extra resources, he posts all cases referred to as pdfs. I loved his class and would totally recommend.
Prof Hale is AMAZING. So kind, chill, and understanding. If you have an issue with anything, you can bring it up to him and he will reply with a meaningful and thoughtful response. His tests are easy as long as you show up to class and take sufficient notes. He makes learning law fun. 10/10 WOULD RECOMMEND, I wish I could take him for every course!
John Hale is the best professor Carleton has ever had. He is so passionate and knowledgable about law! He truly cares about his students and he loves what he does. I cannot recommend him enough!
Too bad he's retiring
Prof Hale is fantastic - he's super passionate about the material and genuinely cares about student success. The course structure is clear, and he goes the extra mile to make content accessible. unstuck study was a great study aid alongside the textbook-free lectures.
Lovely prof! Makes learning law super easy!
Prof. Hale is an ok prof. We were graded by 4 tests, 3 worth 30% and one worth 10%. He is not accessible outside of class (I emailed him several times and he never responded) and he is overwhelmed by his private practice which means grading, classes were posted late and exams often had material that had not yet been covered in class.
