very demanding, yet a great teacher
He doesn't give A's..I'll never take a class with him again.
He is not helpful, arrogant, uncaring and discourages students
marks off for changes he's suggested
The most boring, strange individual at COM- do not take this course with him unless your a grammar masochist
John Hall is the best professor I have had at Boston University so far. He is very a good writer, and he will help you improve as a writer. He is down-to-earth and easygoing, and he grades fairly. You will enjoy his class.
He's really nice, made me into a good writer...he loves helping you - great class!!
I love John Hall. Lectures tend to be a little dull - he's pretty monotone. But he's a really cool, understanding guy and a great professor. My writing really improved with him and he was always willing to help.
Wonderful professor! John Hall really knows his field, and he knows how to teach it. I came out of COM 201 a much better writer because of him. He expects high quality work, but if you pay attention, it isn't difficult to give him what he wants.
One of the worst professors I have had a BU. He is unclear in what he wants especially in the film review which is nearly impossible to get a good grade on because he was a film critic. Definitely do not take his class unless you want to be bored to death
Is hip.
Much harder than he should be, his grading based on grammatical errors is riduclous especially at the college level. He's a cool guy, but the class is too difficult.
Great Professor. Knows his stuff and you will too after taking his class. Gives excellent feedback and is very encouraging.
A great professor. If you like a challenge you'll like this class. He makes you want to be a better writer, and you will definately become one because of him.
Is the man. Nuff' said
John Hall is one of the worst professors at Boston University. He teaches a general COM course and grades you like it's your major. He tends to play favorites too. Save yourself.
Professor Hall was awesome. His voice is monotone (Ben Stein from Ferris Bueller's Day Off) but he's definitely a good prof. He's always willing to help and really takes time to grade your papers. Once you get the hang of what he wants, class is cool.
Very helpful when it comes to assignments - good office hours and peer editing in class. Little tough on the grading, but better than most CO 201 profs I know of!
He plays favorites and tends to grade the girls easier than the guys in the class. He grades everything like it is life or death and has no room for fun. He is a horrible teacher and once you get on his bad side you will stay on his bad side.
I took COM 201 as a high school honors student in the summer. Prof. Hall was rather laid back which made for a nice atmosphere to work in. He was always helpful and interested in what you have to say. He runs writing lab and loves when you go.
Professor Hall is extremely clear on his grading criteria, and always accessible to students. Peer editing with the grad students is pointless sometimes, but he's fair with is assignments and rewrites. He's kind of boring, but a very nice professor.
He's very laidback. Follow the assignments exactly and go to the COM writing center and you'll do well.
Oh really tall John Hall,. He's a fair grader, and explains things clearly. On a fun note, he twitches his eyebrows like crazy and can't every make eye contact with anyone. You'll do **** hw, that he won't collect, but you still have to do it. CO 201 with Johnny H. is an overall fun class.
John Hall is the worst professor ever. He plays favorites, and grades accordingly. No matter how hard you work in his class if he doesn't like you, you will get a bad grade. Office hours are a waste because he can't explain anything, and can't even make eye contact with students. Worst Professor
HARD GRADER. Will hold you to high standard on typs of writing you've NEVER learned to write before this class. REVISE REVISE REVISE. Go to his writing center, he'll be kinder to your essays. Expect lack of explanation for grades on PSA project. He grades that arbitrarily. Beware, A's are RARE.
Take Professor Hall. I think he is a fair grader; he definitely lays all of the criteria out on the table beforehand, so if you get a bad grade on a paper, its your fault. He is fun and understanding in class.
This class was awful and on top of that professor hall is totally unfair and very harsh on his students. This class is boring and the book is useless. Try to take it with another teacher.
He seems like a nice guy, but don't be fooled. When it comes to grading, he is a very hard grader. A's are rare, but you can get them if you work extremely hard. Take course with a different profssor if you have the chance.
he's the shiznit, for real.
He is really nice and the class is alright, but He's a tough grader and sometimes expects more of you than he should. Can be a little boring at times.
Hall was a great professor. I found his grading fair and he whatever criticisms he made, made me a stronger writer. He was very laid back. If you go to the writing center for help with your assignments you get an automatic 2 day extension. If you want to learn something, take him.
John Hall is amazing!! He's a fair grader and makes class interesting. Assignments are fun and you get to rewrite them.
CO201 with Hall was exactly what was promised in the course description. He teaches you finer points of grammar and style, and if you really listen you improve. His teaching style is straight-forward and if you explain your position on a grade he is very receptive and thoughtful. Great summer class b/c you have more time to write. Great professor!
I <3 John Hall. He is very passionate about film and very up on current pop culture, etc. And I dig the monotone.
Prof. Hall is really awesome. While he can be kind of monotone in class, everything is very straightforward and he always has examples of articles. If you need help, he encourages you to see him/COM writing center. And if you go the the center, you'll get an extension on your paper. Definitely take him.
Film Criticism. Prof helps you learn how to write about film. You're encouraged to develop your own style. Papers were "informal," not academic-style. Lots of lively discussions. I LOVED how he brought in famous critics. Manageable workload in reading+writing. Fair grader. Edit your work and good grades are very possible. Prof is approachable and funny.
Pretty good guy, but cares way too much about grammar. Very harsh grader and seems to like only a certain style of writing, his own, and not very open to others ideas. Put forth a lot of work, and extra work, but he is way too critical. Nearly impossible to get an A. Focused too much on journalism.
Hall clearly knows his stuff and cares about his subject, but he is definitely a tough grader and seems pretty close minded when it comes to diverse writing styles. He's a nice guy, kinda boring, overall an ok class, nothing special.
he is a terrible teacher; he plays favorites, and his grading is too subjective.
I was hesitant to take Hall based upon these ratings but I'm so glad I did- I really liked his class. He provides outstanding material and resources and his approach to assignments is great compared to what my friends were doing in their COM 201 classes. He's not the most enthusiastic guy but he keeps class interesting and helps your writing a lot.
Professor Hall was an awesome teacher! Take his class for 201.
Prof. Hall was a fair, nice and generally helpful instructor. He doesn't grade easy, but he makes it clear what you need to do to do well in the class. I really enjoyed him and the class. Take Hall if you get the chance for COM 201.
John Hall is the best professor that I've encountered in the film department. Creates an environment that is extremely laid back; however, his grading is tough and by no means is he going to let you coast. His grading is very useful and he will really push you to improve yourself as a writer. Has a good sense of humor.I had film crit with him
Prof. Hall was amazing. I was worried about summer school but taking his CO201 class was the best decision I've made all year. The assignments aren't easy and some people say he's a tough grader, but if you go to the writing center and do the work you can't go wrong. It's also worth mentioning that he is really helpful and has a good sense of humor
Professor Hall is an amazing teacher. I read reviews about him before coming to this class, expecting this to be a tedious and tough class, but I was wrong. He was extremely clear with instructions and his lectures were useful. Grading is difficult, but I highly recommend that you go visit him during office hours. Take him for CO 201!
He is such a nice guy! I found the class to be pretty tedious, but very very rarely you stay until 9pm he always lets you out early and there's one screening a week so it doesn't even feel like class. His lectures before class are interesting he gets the class going on debates and just an all round nice guy and knows his stuff! Definitely take him
Most frustrating professor i've had so far in COM. He'll encourage you to go to the writing center because he runs it and even though he'll give you an extension on assignments just for going there you'll get a B at the most. Did not agree with his grading at all whatsoever. Don't take 201 with him you'll just end up frustrated and annoyed
Prof. Hall is a very nice man, but extremely boring. I have dozed off in class several times. He is a journalism professor teaching a film requirement with helpful TAs. This class is ALL about TAs, though. They grade your essays. Hall might look at them, but the TAs have final say. The movies in class are fine, but old. Just another boring class.
WORST professor ever, very tough grader. He looks nice but grades very harsh depending on his own opinion for the students. He tells you to go to the writing center just because he is the director of it. No matter how hard you work on the project, as long as you dont get his taste, all lower than B. If I have a chance, I would never have taken it
I personally loved the class. He's soft spoken/comes off dry but he gives good feedback if you show that you're making an effort on assignments. He makes sure you're exposed to all sorts of com writing, which is the point of the class. My friends say he's a hard grader but I did fine in the class. Be proactive with assignments and you'll be fine
Hall was the BEST professor! Before taking COM 201, I had heard a lot about lousy professors in the course, so I decided to take Hall (who my friend recommended). He's a super nice guy and really cares about helping his students. He's a relatively easy grader as long as you take what you've learned in class and apply it. I highly recommend him!
I really loved this class! he had a lot of interesting stuff to say about each film we watched. You could tell he was excited about the content, which made actually learning the content so fun. He's a really nice dude and is interested in getting to know students, even in big lectures. I'd take this class again!
Overall, a very good professor that actually cares and is interested in what he is teaching. While his grading may be a bit tough, he is always open for you to go in and discuss your ideas and help you with your working draft. He also gives out extensions to those who go to the COM writing center.
Incredibly kind, and dedicated Professor. Professor Hall is one of the most gentle hearted human beings I've ever encountered at Boston University, and I found myself lucky to have him as a Professor. He graded fairly and was extremely accommodating. He's lovely to talk to, and the writing center really does help. He made a tough semester bearable.
I love Professor Hall. Easily the best writing professor I have had at BU. As long as you go to class, do your homework, and show that you're trying, you will pass the class. Take advantage of the COM writing center for this class and write about subjects that you are interested in (it really helps). Mr. Hall is hilarious, caring, and personable
Professor Hall helped me grow as a writer and I greatly enjoyed his class! He was always willing to answer questions and genuinely cares about his students. The class wasn't too easy or too difficult, I always felt like I earned my grades. I definitely recommend him for COM CO201-- he has bolstered my confidence and skill in writing immensely.
I learned nothing from his lecture.
Film section of COM101. We watched Sherlock and it wasn't that bad. Definitely not as difficult as the journalism unit imo. Also, he seems like a really nice guy. Some technical issues repeatedly interrupted his lectures but that wasn't his fault.
Hall was a nice guy, and he managed to make his lectures the least boring of all the com 101 profs. I feel like I didn't really learn anything, but we got to watch Sherlock which is cool. chill guy.
Prof John Halls lectures for the FTV unit of COM101 are of the utmost charm and knowledge. He knows his field and is exceptionally up to date with everything FTV. As someone who did not think FTV was for them, I am now very close to declaring. Prof Hall ushers and dips your toe into the world of FTV, leaving you wanting more!
Professor Hall seems like a nice guy and would probably be better in a less boring intro class. The content of his FTV lectures was pretty interesting and he seems like an interesting personality. The class overall is pretty trash but I don't think that's his fault. I'd be interested to have him in a later class.
John Hall is the best. Film and TV is already a particularly interesting unit of COM101, but he makes it even more enjoyable. I think it is hard to make a large lecture hall interesting, but he totally does. He seems so genuine and respectful and often made the class laugh. Everyone seemed super engaged when he was speaking.
Prof. Hall is clearly a very genuine guy, but all of his lectures felt scripted and somewhat out-of-touch with the overall course material. He isn't bad AT ALL, just beware that the lectures aren't the most interesting, and as with all COM 101 units, there aren't a lot of assignments
Prof Hall isn't a bad professor and I found the FTV part of COM101 to be the most interesting. He's super accessible outside of lectures and is more than willing to chat about tv or film. Lectures are a bit scripted but I found the concepts interesting. Make sure to take notes as they help with the weekly assignments and quizzes. Not bad.
super chill. his lecture content is interesting, but he himself as a lecturer is boring and uninteresting. COM101 in general doesn't have too much work, so I enjoyed this class. basically an easy A if you attend the lectures & take notes of the presentation. i would NOT by the COMs textbook. Just borrow it from someone. u hardly use it or need it.
Really chill dude. Lectures were kind of boring, but they aren't mandatory or really even needed to do well in the class. Remember to do your assignments because COM does not allow late assignments or quizzes and your grade will drop drastically. I really liked him though and he seemed genuinely interested in the topic. Can't say that about many.
Hall's lectures were a but boring due to his monotonous tone. However, they were still very good lectures and explained information very well. Pretty easy to earn good grades on his assignments even if you miss lectures.
Seems like a super nice guy, ran the course well, gave good lectures.
Professor Hall talks about a lot of interesting things but isn't at all engaging during lectures. You don't need to pay for the textbook for this class if you know anything about film and TV coming into it, it's all basics - either that or borrow from a friend.
he is so funny, makes lectures interesting, comes up with cool topics to talk about in film.
Hall's CO101 lectures were interesting and well-made but sometimes a little slow and not as engaging. Also, our TAs explained that on the FTV project he didn't allow anyone to score above a 95%, which made lots of students annoyed. Solid lecturer, just very confusing grading choices.
CO101 was a fine class. The film unit was the best, but the PR unit had the clearest quizzes and assignments. Some of the questions on the quizzes weren't talked about in lecture or in the textbook, which was the most annoying thing about this class. The projects are graded very harshly, but overall this is a good intro class, if a little boring.
His examples for TV are white washed and dated. He somehow discussed Killing Eve w/2 different clips and still had bored the class to tears. Of four female detectives he listed only one person in a class of 100 recognized one of them... I was really looking forward to this section as a FTV student but John Hall makes me regret needing the course.
As someone who is not a FTV major his class was still interesting and easy to understand. He seems like a genuinely nice guy.
Prof. Hall wasn't bad by any means, but as someone who knows nothing about FTV, it was a struggle to get through this unit. His slides, while cute, are difficult to take notes on, and the unit was flat at times. We also spent a ton of the semester focusing on Killing Eve like it was his bible. Film nerds will have a ball with him, just not for me
As a film nerd, I did not have a ball with him. This class was boring and goo-goo gah-gah levels of easy.
Difficult to take notes from his slides, lectures are pretty boring. The homework assignments were pretty easy though and it could be worse.
Hall was the film professor in CO101. He spoke very monotonely so it wasn't very engaging. The assignments and projects are graded very nitpicky which is annoying. You will get high grades if you follow the assignment description to a T. Film unit was more film theory in my opinion than actually learning how to make a film.
very nice guy, but lectures can be dull and his unit seems more focused on film marketing than actual filmmaking or film theory
He chill like that
Lectures can get monotonous but he's still very helpful and knows a lot. Really easy to succeed and get an A+
Hall was very knowledgable about film. Although quite monotone and boring, professor hall is also interesting and funny at times. Be prepared to listen in lecture, because his quizzes are a lot about the examples and quotes in lecture. I learned a decent amount about the film industry in his unit of COM101.
Decent professor but very boring. Not the worst of the professors for this course, but not the best either. His lectures were not that engaging if you aren't a film or TV major to begin with. Definitely go to office hours for your TA since they will be grading the projects and assignments, which are graded very precisely and harshly.
Lectures are a bit monotonous and content-heavy, but he is still a chill guy. He definitely knows a lot. In terms of the class, assignments are graded a bit harshly but I understand why. Quizzes are easy but many questions are based off things he said in lecture, so go.
kinda boring but overall a cutie. the amount of research i had to do for the assignments was annoying though cause bro expects you to have watched like every tv show/movie ever lol
GO TO LECTURE!!!! the weekly quizzes are based only off of these except for 1-2 questions so make sure to go. Also, they are usually about small details mentioned in class once or twice, so if you need to get someone notes make sure they are good. He was silly and his class was mostly engaging.
My fav part was when he played lesbian fan edits in lecture
I'm still in the process of taking his east asian cinema class, but it's been amazing so far.. Super caring for his students, offering super helpful feedback, participation matters, but he makes it worth it and super fun and engaging. I literally learned a lot from his class. 10000/10 recommended!!!
Great guy, low energy and doesn't let you use laptops in class only paper notes but he's so nice and provides a really good background on the TV/Film unit.
John Hall is a great professor, but the lectures were incredibly dull if you aren't into film/TV (I fell asleep multiple times). Weekly homework graded out of 5, quizzes out of 10, and three projects throughout the semester. Pray you get a good TA.
idk why Prof. Hall is under 4. He deserves better. His lectures are wonderful, intriguing, and u can tell he does love his career. FTV unit is my fav in COM101. Very nice and inspiring professor!
pretty straightforward unit, but he is incredibly hard to pay attention to and makes his lectures really drag on. other than that the ftv unit was really interesting
Boring lectures, but easiest unit in COM101. Nice guy. Assignments are easy.
Super chill professor. The Film and TV unit was engaging, and I liked that he used more modern movies as examples. Would like to take another one of his classes in the future.
