It's a good intro Accounting class. The tests follow the lectures and the book and everything is well organized.
RWAR! he is very helpful and the tests are very fair

Don't sit in the back if you want to read the journal entries clearly.
he's great! he's jolly and lively! best teacher ever!

Easy tests.
Great teacher, full of energy! I would highly recommend the class

Never went to a single class, aced every test. Accounting is so simple you don't need a professor to hand-hold you through it. If you do go, prepare for a nice long nap.
It gets a bit confusing. I think he's a pretty good teacher though. Maybe I'm just dumb.
Great professor. Very clear and easy to learn from. Made management a fun class to take. His tests were pretty easy too as long as you studied (even if only a little).
Great professor, willing to help students. Went to office hours and he was very helpful. Exams are difficult, but if you study its not so bad. Lectures are clear and straight forward.
His tests were based more on the book even though he doesn't talk much about the book in lectures. My TA didn't discuss the book either. They are similar to the practice tests though. He is a good lecturer, but it does get a little boring.
test covers stuff based on the book rather than lectures
He gives straight forward lectures and the practice exams are very helpful. My T.A, Chang was very confusing.
Very good teacher. Exams are not that easy, but if you study, you'll get a decent grade like an A. He has some hearing problems, which is funny sometimes cuz he sometimes calls guys "M'am" and girls "Sir". I recommend you to take his
Very good teacher. Download the previous exams from the website and know them well. Do all your homework and make sure you understand it. You should have no problems.
Just make sure you understand the hw. Must review from his old exams. They're similar to midterms
Really good teacher, knows what he is talking about.
Very good lecturer, easy to understand, answers questions and follows up. Practice midterms are helpful for tests-HW is not, but good review for lecture stuff. Go to discussion!!! You get handouts, and they are like the longer probs on tests.
A great and interesting professor. He knows what he is talking about and obviously loves teaching accounting courses.
he's gives really good lectures, but he often has a lot of hw. his test are pretty easy
He teaches very clearly. Didn't really read the book but some test questions came from the book. Do the practice exams cuz a lot of the real exam questions came from them. Overall it was a easy class but be prepared to do a lot of hw but it's pretty easy!
Good professor. Tests are pretty easy but there's a lot of homework. A lot of the test questions are straight out of the book so make sure you read it. The final was harder than the mditerms.
A good teacher and a good class. Midterms were easy, Final was hard. Remember to study practice exams because it is very helpful. There is hw due almost every week, but not very relevant to tests. TA's Matt Davis and Bruce Susich are GREAT!
Good teacher, easy class, but monotone voice makes him rather boring. Doing the homework is a must as well as reviewing practice exams. You can pass this class w/o going to lecture easily.
Boring lectures because of his voice. You must either attend lecture or read the book. I attended lecture and never had to open the book. HW is irrelevant to tests and VERY long.
Hard class. The material is difficult to grasp. Study old midterms. Homework is due every week.
he is a great teacher. one of the best in davis. but the final was kinda hard. study the practice finals and midterms. hw-ask him for help, he would tell you all the answers. very approachable. highly recommended! midterms and finals are MC.
Extremely easy, just do the homework. I didn't once read the book and got an A in the class. Just own the sample midterms and practice tests and you'll get an A. He's not a good teacher but he's tight. Believe in the curve. Hancock for life!
Best accounting professor. Do not take accouting with anyone else. He is very easy, just read the book and attend discussion and you can probably skip his lectures.
Pretty easy teacher. You dont really need to go to lecture, just read the book closely and make sure you know it well. A lot of the questions are directly from the book. Easy class, I got an A+
Good teacher for people who attend lecture all the time. He teaches slowly and makes things clear. Doesn't give much homework. Prolly won't have to open the book, at least not to read. Tests are MC, I just guessed on most, still got an A =D
Easy to Understand and not that boring
Good enthusiasm and knowledge of material... but still lectures can be boring at times. Attending class is helpful because lectures not posted online. Sitting in the front of class helps because his handwriting tends to get small. Should definitely complete the homework and attend discussions.
He is an absolutely fantastic professor. He teaches very clearly, basically lays down everything you need to know. His tests are fair, but by no means easy, you do need to study and go to lecture. Grading is also very fair. He's basically a funny "dad" type guy that will really keep u interested
His class is lively and fun. Jokes are funny and as long as you remember his lectures and do your homework problems, you'll do fine. Overall his class is interesting.
Nice professor, but hard class.
Very informative class. Hancock keeps everything clear and tells you what to study for on the tests. and 35% of your grade is like an automatic A if you attend discussion (15%) and do the easy, but tedious, HW (20%). Doesn't post lecture notes, though.
midterms are fair. u DO need to study for it tho. Easy B class.
tests are nothing like the lectures. lectures are only helpful for the homeworks. tests are all multiple choice/guess, and quite confusing. the subject matter can be difficult to grasp, and his lectures typically do not help clarify things.
This class is fairly easy, you will have to go to lecture and read the book, but if you do, you should have no problems passing the class with a decent grade. Tests can be tricky though. Hancock is a great professor and very funny. I am for sure taking MGT 11B with him in the spring!
Hancock is a great professor. He made a boring class interesting. The tests are MC and not hard. The homework can take awhile but its 20% of your grade. Go to lecture, its very helpful. If you just listen in lecture and read the book you will get an A. Final includes exact Qs from 2 midterms.
The class overall was ok. HW was sometimes long and pretty difficult to figure out. Go to his office hours though. He gives you all the answers. Midterms and final are also medium. I got a C- in the class because I didn't study as much as I should have. Lecture is boring and so is the book.
he gave helpful examples. he made confusing concepts easy. a very good professor. must read and understand the demostration problems and hw problems.
Nice guy and decent lecturer. Tests are MC which is nice. Make sure you do the hw since it counts for your grade and helps you learn the material. Overall good prof.
great lecturer - very clear. easy professor. you learn so much in class and by doing the hw. the tests were really easy if you go to class. so basically go to class and do the hw and you're almost guaranteed an A. it's too easy to get anything less than that.
Very clear professor. HW is extremely helpful for learning the material that will be on the exams.
Great guy. Great professor. He made a class that I thought would be very boring fairly interesting. Looking forward to having him again for 11a :)
overall good..i have him for 11b and susich for 11a..susich is a much younger/enthusiastic & interesting lecturer. Don't get me wrong, they are both great but for 11a, take susich. Only hancock teaches 11b anyway
11A was a lot more interesting...I couldn't focus in 11B. Nevertheless, Hancock is very clear in lecture and on the MTs. The HW is surprisingly long and specific and doesn't help too much for the exams. My TA sucked.
Prof. Hancock is a very nice professor and he's extremely clear in his lectures. He slowly went through complicated concepts so that we fully understand them, and he supplements the lecture with numerical examples. I had Susich for TA and he was excellent as well. Midterms/final can be hard, so be prepared. Overall great for an accounting class.
I had Hancock for both 11A and 11B. He is a great lecturer, but makes extremely difficult exams! The average for our final was a 68%. He does however curve very fairly so you may be pleasantly surprised with your final grade.
I took 11a with Susich and found his teaching style to be a bit more interesting and engaging than Hancock's style. Hancock is a great professor and really wants his students to do well, but lectures were a bit dry and boring. AWESOME CURVE--Got a B, probably should have had a C- (at the highest).
Great Professor..Lectures are very organized. Hard exams but he's very fair as far as grading goes.
the lectures were okay, he's a nice guy and understands that sometimes the stuff he has to teach can be dry. the exams were tricky because of the wording of the questions. i didn't think the hw helped, i suggest reading and studying the book and notes. i got an A but i knew some acct prior to the class, and i thnk there was a slight curve.
I love this guy! Accounting does get dry at times, but Dr.Hancock has a booming voice that keeps ya awake. Also, his notes are extremely clear and make the material more understandable. His tests aren't hard, but here is an important tip: go to the book's website before a test and do the multiple choice there. I did and I got an A on all 3 tests!
I love his enthusiasm. Very clear and concise. Openminded as well. Good humor. =D
He is a good teacher. His lectures are clear, and the tests are not treaky. if you read the book and do the homework, it is not that hard to get an A. Can't wait to take 11 B with him
Great teacher. He really knows his stuff. YOu do however have to go to class and section and read the book if you want an A.
must go to lecture and section to understand material...not super difficult but can be challenging...2 midterms and final are all multiple choice...overall hes a cool dude though
Reading the book and doing the homework is good enough for an A. Going to his lectures will definitely help, he's quite funny too. Has lots of stories to keep you interested most of the time. Got and A+ no problem!
Very good teacher, you can learn from either the book or lecture. Going to section is mandatory but, they help a lot anyways. Pretty nice grading system with 15% attendence to section, h/w another 20% and then tests are the rest
good teacher. helpful during office hours. exams are book based so be sure to study the definitions from the book. TAs might give you hints on what to study for, like what kind of questions you should expect and what tables/concepts to pay attention to.
Great Professor. I wouldn't take any management 11a/b acconting class without him. though the materials might be costly since he asks the publisher to make a special copy that bookstore wouldn't buy back.
I'm glad I have had him both times for MGT 11A and 11B. I agree with all of the good things other people say about him.
One of the best teachers at Davis.
Hancock is a good and nice teacher. 11A was a lot easier than 11B but he curves a lot. I recomend that you take him for both classes. There's homework due every week or every two weeks but they are relatively easy. I suggest you study a lot for 11B.
great professor. Knows what he's talking about since he's been teaching the same class for 25 years. Lectures are very general and provide basic outline, but the actual problems are more detailed. ATTEND DISCUSSION. online hw can be confusing, but two lowest scores are dropped. Take the class. It's good knowledge and math is limited to Algebra 1.
Professor Hancock is by far my favorite professor at UCD so far. He's clear, funny, and interesting. He knows what he's talking about, you ask him anything regarding the subject and he knows more than you can imagine on it. He's an overall great guy, and I'm actually sad not to be in his class anymore! If you get a chance take his class!
must follow or you will be too behind to catch up. discussions are helpful. theres also a curve
Such a great professor! my favorite one. Go to lectures and discussion!!
It's an easy class, but you still have to study and do your homework.
great professor, even though the class is difficult. his test are kinda tricky. 2 midterms and a final. homework is tricky. you should attend class and read the book if you want to do well. the book helps a lot. he always encourages questions and is very willing to help students.
No need to attend lectures. Just attend discussion and read the book and you'll do fine. Tests are all multiple choice.
why does he always look so mad? easy class, just need to know how to read to get an A in the tests and the hws. hws are graded kind of harshly though, i guess it depends on the TA
tests are tricky and difficult. attendance is mandatory and counts of 15% of your grade. lecture is DRY and hard to stay awake. i usually get A's with a gpa of 3.6 and find this class to be demanding. the HW assignments suck, and are not on the TEST.
This class is not that hard. It has a lot of math use, but if you follow the textbook and do the homework assignments, you'll be set. Discussion is mandatory, TA Vernita was pretty good. You'll have to go to lecture to take notes, or read the book rigorously. Test are tricky, the practice test don't help. Overall, good class.
Hankock is AMAZING!!! if you go to class and do the homework you'll do fine in the class. there are no surprises, and he manages to make the lectures interesting.
managerial accounting is so much harder then finacial. he is really helpful though. tests are really tricky. discussions are mandatory but the TA's have heavy accents. this class is challenging.
Amazing professor. As nice and friendly as they come. Not to mention he can teach the subject to perfection. The book is actually solid and necessary. Homework is long, but its also a big part of your grade. Tests come from database, but are very representative of what is taught. Class is interesting, but either you get the subject or you don't.
really boring lectures and can get confusing as times, office hours are helpful but he is late to them a lot of the time. in general, its an okay class
He's a good teacher but sometimes it is different from the book such as the terms he uses, so it makes it confusing sometimes. Attendance is mandatory for discussions. This class is difficult. I am a freshman and I worked so hard. I got a C and D on my midterms and a F on my final. I ended up with a C- because of homework and attendance.
Very easy class. Do the work and memorize the book and the tests are easy.
Great professor! His lectures are extremely clear and helpful for understanding the concepts. He DOES have a sense of humor although it isn't apparent at first. Homeworks weekly, sects are mandatory, both midterms and the final are multiple choice. I always look forward going to this class, but also leaving after the long 1:20 min lecture. I recomm
I am also a freshman and this class is demanding. I do not think it is easy at all. I studied so hard for my midterms just to fail them. I recommend not even bothering with the practice test. They were a big waste of time. Instead read the book like crazy, do the online practice questions. I enjoy his lectures but TA bishop really killed sections.
Honestly I don't know why all of these people are giving him good reviews. Discussion is mandatory, his lectures do not help with the tests. Only reason people say it is easy is because the class is curved. His Lectures will make you hate life because they are so boring. I now HATE accounting. Its not that easy of a class. You have to teach yoursel
This class is awful. I took it really excited to learn, but the tests come from nowhere. Neither the lectures or the homework are helpful. The TA's are not that great either. One actually said "well...this isn't rocket science" when I was trying to get help. Don't take this class.
If you have five dollars and John Hancock has five dollars, John Hancock has more money than you. There is no 'ctrl' button on John Hancock's computer. John Hancock is always in control. John Hancock can kill two stones with one bird. John Hancock counted to infinity - twice.
AVOID AVOID AVOID!! I would rather poke my eyes out than sit through his lecture because they are so boring and overall useless to your knowledge of the subject. He just rambles and chicken-scratches on the board. Sections are mandatory and homework is long and tedious. Got a B because of a curve. I'd avoid the class if you can. Hard and tedious
Dr. Hancock is a very nice, professional and good teacher. He's not here for research; he's here for you. Lectures enhance on clarity that the textbook already provides quite well in most cases. Practice exams might as well be carbon copies of actual tests; some questions are even recycled. Katherine is the best TA in the world!
not bad, very enthusiastic about his subject, yet you can't deny that accounting is a really boring and irritating subject. In order to get a good grade in this class you have to do the homework and READ THE BOOK. his lectures are helpful yet they wont give u a good grade if u just go to class.
i love this class! he is very upbeat and his jokes are funny.. his lectures are boring sometimes but they help with the homework so much.. i recommend reading the book throughly and doing the practice midterms.. theyre pretty much the same thing :)
to whomever spoke bad about him, im sorry but you cant blame anyone but yourself, proff hanckock makes accounting interesting and he is an awesome teacher he tries to help as much as he can and he is very admirable is very professional. i learned a lot from his class..i cant wait for managerial accounting next quarter
Mr. Hancock knows anything and everything about accounting. Mr. Hancock doesn't mess around when it comes to accounting. Mr. Hancock probably drives a $100,000 car. He's professional, funny, knows alot about what he teaches, and the class is pretty easy, just read and put in the time and you will do fine...along with his curve. Overall A++ teacher.
this class was cake. i didn't go to his class after 2 weeks of boredom and got an A. the key is to study his practice midterms and get a good TA, make sure you understand everything that the homework covers in the book.
11b is harder than 11a. he is still a great teacher :)
Professor is great! lectures are get a bit boring as the quarter goes on, but its still very useful for homework. I'm sorry but my TA was horrible! Michael Konczal, i'm calling you out! I know you know the subject well, just TEACH rather than sit there in your spin chair and eat nuts.
Hancock is a good guy, but accounting is never fun. Lectures help a bit, gives you reference when doing that tedious HW. Sections are mandatory, but it counts as grade so that's easy. Practice & actual HW takes about 4 hours to complete, but it is absolutely essential cuz it will help on test. Test is MC, very easy if you done the HW. Get well prof
Accounting sucks, but Hancock made it a lot less sucky because he's such a good teacher. The curves are decent, and you get points just for attending section. Homework takes forever though.
like many others, I dislike the length of the homework, but it is somewhat necessary to understand the materials. The test can be quite hard if you dont study, but a good class nevertheless.
Excellent!
Dear lord. If I had an hour and 20 minutes left to live, I would spend it in this class because it feels like ETERNITY. In all seriousness, the material is dull, but all the tools to do well in the class are there. The material isn't hard, you just need to not get slain by the overpowering boringness that embodies accounting.
Accounting itself is really hard and insipid but this class is super easy and interesting. If you want to get A, just take and keep above 80% of all three exams. Prof. Hancock has a heart of gold and is funny. He will evaluate on a curve boosting your grade after the final.
Awesome guy. Accounting is a hard subject but he is not out to get you. He gives out practice exams that you can take before the actual midterms and final that are very helpful. Study for the midterms do the homework and you can get at least a B easy.
Hancock just read off his slides, so attendance wasnt mandatory. Homework and sample exams were very useful. I did not attend a single class after the first day and I got an A. I just did homework, extra practice questions, and study before exams. You need understand the material! If you don't, go to lecture. Discussion was mandatory. Decent curve.
Accounting is really hard, and Hancock doesn't make it that much easier to learn, but his practice exams help a lot since he reuses some of the questions on the actual exams. Online homework is really hard, use the book to figure out how to do it cuz he won't show you how in lecture. It's easy to get an A on the homework cuz he takes highest grade.
Material is hard, must teach yourself or get some guidance from TAs. Make sure you get a good TA, mine was very hard to understand. Do the practice exams, he reuses some of the questions. Discussion mandatory. Got an 83.4% which came out be a solid B, that's not much of a curve... I thought he would give a better curve. 2 midterms, hw, disc, final.
His lectures aren't written by himself and are posted on SmartSite, so you technically don't have to go to class. However, when you do go he might have a few interesting stories to tell aside from lectures that can be a bit dry from time to time. Tests are reasonable. Discussions are mandatory and helpful because there's practice problems to do.
Accounting is kinda hard to understand, but a fair professor overall!
Management is an easy class if you do the homework honestly, read the book, and do the practice exams. Professor Hancock recycles questions from the practice exams, which helps a lot. Unlike lectures, discussions are mandatory and can be helpful depending on your TA. Calculations can be tedious, but that's accounting.
Professor Hancock, while extremely boring, is an easy professor. His lectures are the book powerpoints so there is no need to read the book. He even podcasted so there was no point in going to class. Just study the day before from his lectures and you can get an A for trying. It's easy to get a B or higher without much effort.
Not that fun. Got to do your homework. Tests are tricky, expect the curve to be around 5-6%.
He is easy, but barely any curve. If you do the homework, read the chapters, and do the practice problems and go to the class before the midterms, you will get an A.
Professor Hancock is pretty awesome. Had him for 11A and 11B. I felt that he was more enthusiastic about 11B because he definitely had more relevant scenarios for it. I also felt like he taught 11B better. Class details: online homework (tedious), midterms are medium to hard, final is cumulative. Class is curved! A very decent curve!
He teaches straight from the premade book, using no original powerpoints or tests. Easy course overall but I hate his style of not caring at all about putting effort into teaching the course. Accounting's learned by doing and his style makes you do crappy online homework and sit through lectures with crappy powerpoints that barely grace key points.
Nice professor but lectures are boring. Homework is tedious and he makes you buy the access code. I didn't learn much because he just briefly goes over slides. He's not very enthusiastic about teaching. I enjoyed 11A because it was simple and I was able to understand on my own but 11B requires teaching, which he doesn't make an effort to do.
Requires the use of an online access code to do the homework. Almost $100 for perhaps the worst system ever invented. An example: To make accounting journals, the left side of the screen has drop-down boxes for the dates. But sometimes they are RANDOMIZED so you have to hunt for the correct date, and the randomization is different every time.
Although he curves the grade, but the curve would not help much if you get higher than a C, the curve only raises the grades for the people who are getting Ds to Cs. Lectures are boring, but discussion is mandatory.
Mandatory discussion and online homework (access code sold with text) are sufficient preparation for multiple-choice exams. Lecture isn't worth the time if you keep up with the reading, which is almost a shame because Hancock is so good at answering students' questions (if you speak up loud enough). Definitely recommend.
PowerPoints are pretty dry, but if you just show up and listen, you'll understand everything you need for the online homework and multiple choice exams. His personality is hilarious. As long as you show up to lecture and semi-pay attention, you should do just fine.
Good for learning the basics of accounting. Generous curve, but he doesn't round up, so if you're stuck at XX.9% too bad! The final is much harder than the midterms.
Don't bother with the PowerPoint lectures. Just do the homework and practice tests. Getting a C is pretty much guaranteed at about 50% effort.
Great professor. Very intelligent and approachable. Really study the lecture slides and you will do very well! Give yourself enough time to study all slides for the course for the final. The practice tests are very similar to exams. Great curve. Homework is hard and too long, so don't procrastinate!
His lectures are really boring and harder to convince yourself to show up. he reads off his powerpoint so you dont have to show up to lecture. DO THE HW!it really helps with your grade. and do the practice exams in the book and the Wiley plus account if you want to get a good grade.
Lectures are boring, and discussions are mandatory if you want a good grade. 2 MTs and a final w/ graded online homework. That said, easy class. Do the homework thoroughly and you'll be prepared for the exams, though some people didn't do so well so it might be a "you get it or you don't" type of class.
I think it's a useful class, though others may disagree. He has an good sense of humor which makes lectures more bearable. Overall a recommended class, but be sure to find a homework buddy to get through all the online homework easier.
Homework and practice exams are extemely different from the actual exam. Good lecturer, section attendance needed, but the TA doesn't make any sense.
He's a nice dude, but lecture is pretty straight forward and boring. Lecture attendance is not mandatory, only goes over ppt slides which are all in smartsite. office hour's attendance is mandatory. online hw every chapter. the course is generally easy until the last few chapters. exams are not cumulative.
His lectures are extremely boring due to his monotone voice. Lots of memorization required for this class, and it gets harder in the later chapters. The textbook he uses is expensive and very hard to understand. He should really use a different textbook because the wording is very confusing. Homeworks are online and discussion is mandatory.
Lectures were really boring. He just reiterates the material in the book. Be sure to do homework days in advance though. Tests were fairly hard. Study hard and read the book!
Really nice guy, lecture is a must if you don't want to read the book (I never used mine), discussion is useless (mostly depends on which TA you get) but mandatory. Homework is repetitive but helps with studying for the test. Getting a good grades in this class isn't very hard.
An ok professor. He just reads off slides during lecture. Must attend lecture and pay attention and read the textbook and absorb the material. Tests are tricky so beware
Thought the class was easy, but to be fair I love accounting. The concepts are simple and very straightforward. Hancock is cool, but there lecture is a big waste of time. Just read, do the homework, and study 3-4 hours for the tests. Discussion attendance is graded, but discussion is useless. I just went and zoned out.
I think he is just started being a bad teacher this quarter. He doesn't really "lecture" or "teach" instead he emails you question on what you want to learn a before lecture, and go over those questions. Forces you to purchase book cuz LearnSmart(due before lecture) 15% of grade and HW is from book. This class is pretty much self taught from LS.
Way too much Homework. I felt the class should have been 8 units. Online homework 4 times a week and each takes like 1-2 hours to complete. His lecture will bored you to sleep. Look to you left, look to you right, no one is paying attention. Don't take this class unless you have insomnia
Alot of learnsmart and homework. Tests were fairly hard. Probably my hardest class this quarter.
Lectures not mandatory because all homework and readings are online (which i loved). However he is very approachable and willing to help if you need in-person help. Course content is very straightfoward. 2 midterms and a final, all multiple choice. Great sense of humor as well. I would definitely recommend this prof!!
The new online book that the school is doing this year threw him for a loop. Regardless, he still does his best to answer questions. He sends out emails before every lecture asking for questions as well as a list of review topics before each exam. Tests cover a lot of material and are pretty hard, but assignments make up a bulk of the grade.
Prof Hancock is very knowledgable; however lectures are almost unnecesary due to everything being online. LearnSmart assignments twice a week, assignment chapter HW twice, and minimal discussion HW. Do your work and you are good. Test questions taken exactly from practice quizzes. Attend lectures before exams. Very helpful during OH.
The online homework assignments were a bit tedious, you definitely don't want to procrastinate on that. Lecture was clear; he goes over the topics and calculations you need to know on exams. Some questions on exams are taken from practice quizzes (DO IT). Know the calculations he does in class and you will be fine (podcasts and hw help w review).
Ridiculous amount of work for a basic accounting class. LearnSmart is due before class everyday and Homework after as well as BTN each week. LearnSmart and HW usually take an hour+
ridiculous amount of work !!!!! If you never take accounting before, the homework is going to take more than 4 hours each week ! His lectures were helpful.
Lots of homework, so the workload for this class can get pretty annoying and overwhelming. Lectures out of the book and are not mandatory. Stay on top of your work, but be prepared to spend a lot of time with the course.
Came into accounting knowing nothing about it, came out feeling like it was second-nature. Course is mostly self-study with weekly reading and online assignments and homework through Learnsmart. Prof. Hancock formats his lectures around students' questions. If you can keep up with the assignments, it's an easy A.
The homework never seems to end - there's questions in the reading, online homework, discussion homework... However, it's a fairly straightforward class and a lot of it is learned through the reading. His lectures are pretty good, goes over main ideas, and as long as you don't procrastinate, you'll pass the class.
The amount of work required by this class is ridiculous. Homework and learnsmart assignments are 40 percent of grade. You will spend a good 4 hours at least doing these a week. Not all material is covered in class, only the main points. Tedious and boring as can be.
Hancock is very knowledgable in accounting & a very approachable, sweet man. As long as you read the chapters, you're golden! Yes, there's a bit of work but it's beneficial because you can get 100% on 40% of your grade--plus the assignments are easy. Overall, I really enjoyed the class!!!
Really nice professor. His speaking is not very fast so that international student can keep pace with his lecture easily. DO CURVE in this course, no A-, once you get a-, it will turn into A. Awesome professor, I respect him so much! His office hours are very useful, you can solve your problems in his office hours. Also, his TAs are very helpful.
By the time 11B came around I had the class figured out and did not attend a single lecture or discussion and managed if not a perfect midterm score, 40% above the average on the other midterm. He relegates the teaching to Learn Smart which is such a joke for a class I spend this much for at a UC. Great curve, but lazy ass professor.
Practically an online class. I skipped nearly all lectures and discussions. Lots of HW that is worth 45% of your grade, but easy to do. Exams are curved and are very similar to the practice quizzes. It's not a difficult class, just a bit tedious, so its an easy A if you don't slack off.
Hancock structured this class so basically all the work is online but it was worthwhile in my opinion to still attend class. He's an expert in accounting and really helps you understand the material. Also, he's very approachable and kind. The class is set up for you to succeed and there's a curve--just do your work.
His classes are structured so that you will learn the material as long as you do the homework. If you do all of the practice problems you will do great on tests. He's a great teacher, but attendance is not necessary. You can just read the book and do fine. One of my favorite classes of undergrad.
It's hard to describe this class. Yes, it is A LOT of work for a 3 unit class, you have lots and lots of homework everyday. However, it is definitely an easy A, exams are very easy and on top of that they are curved. If you put in the work, getting an A is very easy.
Hancock was the best prof I had this quarter. He always brought in examples and encouraged class participation. The LearnSmart homework and readings are kind of excessive and due before each lecture, and if you understand them then there's really no point in going to lecture. Most of the exam questions are taken from the practice quizzes on LS.
This is basically an online class. He makes you do so much homework and reading, but it accounts for around 40% of your grade. He does not really teach the information because he expects that you've already read the content in the textbook. Class is basically for questions and some content, but he sends out his powerpoint/pdfs.
His class is weighted mostly on the homework, which aren't too bad. Most people complain about too much homework, but if done in a timely manner, you won't feel the pressure. He's approachable and easy to talk to, a very nice guy. All of his tests are multiple choice, both midterms are 15% and final 25%. He tries to give students an advantage.
Absolutely brilliant! He turns complex financial transactions into something understandable!
A lot of people taking this class thought it was super hard or super easy. I thought it was somewhere in the middle. Scored average on the first midterm and final, but completely bombed the second midterm. Hw is worth 40% of the grade and there is a nice curve so I was still able to finish with a B+. Barely showed up to lecture.
It is essentially the same class as MGT 11A with different concepts. A lot of online homework, 2 midterms, and a final. Most of the questions are from discussion and the practice quizzes. The curve is good!
He's a good professor. However, his lecture are not that great. It's mostly learning from the homeworks that he assigns. Tests are mostly practice problems from discussion sets and practice online quizzes, and the grading scale is heavier on the homework than the exams. Overall, he's a really fair professor and willing to help you as much as he can
He's well versed in the content and does a decent job of explaining concepts when you are confused. However, this class is basically a learn on your at home. The material isn't too difficult, but the workload is ridiculous (2-4hrs per night). 30 page readings w 60 multiple choice are due every 2 days along with lengthy hw due after those readings.
Honestly, this class was tough. If you understand the material, then not necessary to go to class because most of the time he posts slides online. Discussion isn't mandatory. Tip for tests: study the practice quizzes and the LS hw. SO much homework-- but at least it is worth a lot of the grade. You'll need to learn the material mostly on your own.
Hancock spent the entire quarter using an incorrect weighting scale on canvas, misleading me into believing I had an 87 going into the final when I actually had a 77. He seems like a nice guy, but at the end of the day he doesnt really care about his students too much and is willing to screw a lot of people over just because he made a mistake.
He doesn't teach so get ready to learn on ur own. He was cool until he changed up the weighting scale after the final. I needed a 73% on the final to get an A in the class according to the grading scale he had been using all quarter so I didn't care too much to study for it. But after the final, he changed the weight and I ended up with a B+ .
Professor Hancock definitely is passionate about this line of work and will give you advice on how to go about accounting(any finance career) with an edge. Lectures are non mandatory but help extensively. Graded heavily on HW and LS(online)..
Prof Hancock is super kind + comes to class smiling. He does a great job at making the material understandable during lecture. Really takes the time to answer questions. Lots of (simple) hmwk that gets very tedious, but you get 45% for doing it. Exams are easy, much of the questions come from the practice quizzes. Has review before exams, def go!
I had him for both 11A & B. He s an ok professor, but not the best at explaining in my opinion. Grades heavily on hw, which can be about 45% of your overall grade. 2 midterms and cumulative final. Midterm questions are based on online practice quizzes, and final questions taken from midterm. Guaranteed "b-b+" if you do ok on tests.
Prof. Hancock is a great professor. He is very kind and funny. His grading criteria is clear and concise. That being said he does give a a lot of tedious homework but dont worry they help you understand the material and are 45% of your grade. He curved for 11a but not 11b but do the hw and you should get least a B.
GOAT proffesor at Davis. Dresses like a guy who just showed up to the bahamas for vacation, lots of Hawaiian shirts, gotta love it. Just study for the tests by doing the practice quizzes from the book and you will get an A. Going to miss the steady hand of Hancock guiding me through accounting.
Homework is easy. make sure you are sitting close to the blackboard or you will be confused by his magic handwriting. overall, good prof.
The Tests are weighted too heavily individually. The first two (midterms) are separate (non accumulative) However the final is on all the chapters. Does not explain well what the test is going to be over. Homework assignments do not help with tests. Poor class overall. You could learn a lot and do poorly.
MGT 11A IS TEXT BOOK HEAVY. If you don't read the text book, then your midterm scores goes down the drain. He lectures with powerpoints and needs to be asked after class if he could release the pp to us. There's a lot of homework. Too much homework if you ask me but the homework is what kept my grade at 88% when my midterm test was 80 and 66%.
Hancock was a terrific professor. Very engaging in class so I highly recommend attending lecture. There was a lot of homework but it was very helpful in enhancing understanding of the material so if you actually care about accounting, you shouldn't care about the homework load. Tests had some annoying terminology questions unrelated to most content
John Hancock is an OK professor. Shows respect to students but does not do much teaching during lectures. Be prepared to learn on your own (2-3hrs per day). Workload is heavy.
Very knowledgable, lectures are very information heavy but I rarely paid attention. HW was about 40% of the grade but took about 2 hrs a week. Tests were pretty difficult and hard to study for because he didn't have practice tests. Barely got an A. He had a 2% curve (88-100 A, etc.) which was very helpful. Overall good professor.
You will be spending 5+ hours a week doing homework for this class! But it will be worth it if this is your first time experiencing accounting at all. Prof Hancock is very knowledgeable and always made class interesting with all his life stories. Homework is worth a lot, as long as you do it and do decent on the exams youll end up with an A.
He is very clear and to the point. He genuinely cares about his students and is very understanding. I would definitely take this class again. There is a lot of work in the online textbook but it gets easier. Business is not my major and I still enjoyed this class.
I said mandatory for lectures mostly because it really helps to go. This professor is probably my favorite professor I've had since I came to Davis. He answers all your questions. The hw isn't bad at all and I did pretty well on the tests. His lectures always grab my attention. I recommend sitting in the front row bc it's more engaging.
He's a pretty cool professor. Works in consulting so it seems he teaches just for kicks. There is a lot of homework, but if you do it you don't have to come to class.
Expect to spend several hours each day on homework assignments (3 kinds of homework assignments), so please make sure to take this class with a relatively light schedule. Homework is 45% of your grade and there are 2 midterms and a final. Use the practice tests/BTN worksheets to study for all of these!!
MGT11A isn't all sunshine and rainbows for getting an easy A. Its the worst class that I've ever taken. Midterms are killers. You need to study like there's tomorrow for them, and his way of teaching is dry and boring. You would see half the class absent. Homeworks are a TON, literally. Just do yourself a favor and change the grading to a P/NP.
You're expected to master knowledge of an entire chapter by every lecture, twice a week so you have time if you're not taking other classes. LearnSmart is a pre-lecture assignment due before every lecture. Homework for every chapter. Midterms and Final killed my grades since LS & HW are automatic 100%. The tests were super hard. He reviews before.
Midterms and final were too hard. Studied consistently and ended up with a B+. He's a really nice guy but wish he made better exams that reflected the type of problems we did on lecture/homework
Had to suffer two parts of accounting and am surprised that I made it out alive. I don't see how Hancock is so highly rated considering his lectures are meaningless and dull. He is the stereotypical "old, boring college professor." Heavy HW load worth 45% of your grade but means 4 assignments a week. Try to avoid if you can, miserable experience
Amazing lecturer and is always encouraging students to do their best and ask questions. Homework and LS combined, is a total of 45% of your grade. Making them worth more than your midterms, this helps if you do poorly on exams. You can fail both midterms, get 100% on all HWs and LS, okay on the final and still get a B-.
One of the best teacher I've ever met for sure. He is a hilarious and caring professor, even though he basically just go over the materials during class, you would not feel bored. Besides, the materials and textbook are good and easily understood. Graded by two mt and final and HW, preview due T/R, hw due weekends, lowest grade dropped.
He is the one who assigned most homework in my entire college life. Nevertheless, I wouldn't mind that if his homework is related to the tests but it's NOT! it means that you have to learn some tricky concepts and formulas to finish his heavy homework yet they are useless during the exams. I trusted some compliments on this page and ended up PNP.
LOTS of homework-- preclass reading quizzes (60qs) and post class free response examples. But a great lecturer. Lecture is far clearer than the book and as long as you go to lecture and take good notes, tests are very straightforward. 5 stars for lecture content, minus one for the homework.
The lectures were boring and there's so much homework assigned. This was my GE course and I spent the most time on this compared to my other classes and the homework wasn't even helpful for learning the material.
Tests all multiple choice. Stereotypical southern gentleman. Knows his stuff but be prepared for 2 chapters a week, 60 questions and HW per chapter. Takes a lot of time, do it early. Go to lecture right before test, will give practice problems and go over them. My TA liked to give us hints before tests. Will teach you a lot if you do the reqs.
Loved taking this class with Hancock. There is a lot of homework, but it's easy to get full credit for them as long as you complete them, plus they really help understand the reading. His lectures mainly go over the reading, but I found them helpful in answering questions I had and in making concepts more clear. Nice guy, and made accounting fun.
Lots of homework! I really spent more time on this lower division course than my upper ones. You get everything as long as you read from Learn smart, so attendance doesnt matter. Exams are tricky, but if you have put effort into the homework, then the exams shouldnt be that challenging. Had a hard time, but also benefited from it, worth it.
It was hard to pay attention during normal lectures, but I was very grateful for review classes before exams. READ THE BOOK, do the practice quizzes on MH Connect, and redo Review Questions that Hancock gives you to do well on the exams. Accounting isnt too difficult if you stay organized and study hard
I personally thought he was a decent professor. I really wish he did more examples in class, which would've helped me more. Be ready to do lots of reading, since his homework is based on that. He is very kind hearted and is willing to help if you are struggling, which is good. But for me, it was definitely a bit of a struggle taking this class.
His lectures are vernacular, easy to understand. Stories are funny, and help you understand certain concepts. Textbook reading is heavy, but class is worth it. Provides a lot of study resources and is very friendly/well meaning. Lectures don't require attendance, but help to make sense of the textbook content in the way he'll test you on.
He always leaves rooms for questions and gives amazing lectures
He is a nice teacher and he illustrates the contents clearly.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS AS A GE! I recommend only taking MGT 11A if it's required or if you're actually interested in accounting. I took this class as a GE and regretted it. There is so much homework and assignments and I found the lectures dull and useless so I stopped attending them. I had to self teach myself accounting and I ended up getting a B
Amazing guy who does amazing lectures. Class has lots of homework, so don't take it as a GE unless you are passionate about the subject. Fair tests and is open to talk.
Hancock changed his grading and unfairly gives everyone an A. How are the students who understand accounting distinguished from those who just received an A due to the professor's update grading standards. I hope he changes this.
This is the easiest class I have taken. After this class, I realized you don't really learn accounting concepts but you just need to do the Learnsmart to get an A. Thanks, Hancock!
The class isn't too bad, but the class uses LearnSmart which is just a lot of reading and HW for a lower division course, and you don't really learn too much from LearnSmart. However, his class isn't very complicated and if you study you should do well.
This was the first accounting class I've taken at davis, but professor hancock's lecture style made the concepts really clear and easy to understand. Assignments were mainly from LearnSmart and midterms weren't too bad and like the practice problems. Would definitely take him again!
I came into this class expecting it to be relatively hard (as I read from some RMP reviews) but the class turned out to be fine. Open-book, open notes on the internet so it's impossible to fail. Even the prof said 30 to 40% of the class were scoring A's on their exams lol. Prof is nice and wants the best for you, I'll miss seeing Hancock for sure
Midterms are moderately difficult, but were open note and also were not a big part of your grade so bombing one was not the end of the world. The majority of your grade is completion based assignments and hw that you'll likely get 100% on. He's a good lecturer and answers questions well. Read the textbook and you won't need to go to lecture.
A really kind professor that is not going to make it hard on you. The class is very well structured and while lectures are helpful if you have questions, they're not necessary to attend. A bombed midterm won't ruin your grade because they're all relatively low weightage.
