a great sport, interesting, knowledgeable
Excellent. Intelligent, sense of humour, very approachable, knows his rocks.
One of the best, can't remember a prof who was so interested in what he taught

Who knew the wonderful world of rocks was so fun
Open Mind, Sustainability Oriented
Juggles putty in class for plate tectonics. Nuff said. :-)

Hanes is Great. Knows all kinds of stuff. Sense of humor
All ur hockey sticks are belong to us!
Makes the course interesting and it

im doing mining cause of this guy
Now i love rocks.
Excellent

This guy makes rocks and stuff interesting
great guy- I loved the course, I want to go into geo because of this guy.
Sci02 Rules!
He's amazingly well prepared, awesome prof
great prof, too bad the subject is SOO useless
very enthusiastic about the course, interesting and fun labs, great professor!
Great prof, loves what he does, and it shows
Very nice guy and an amazing professor. Very easy going. Made me love geology forever. I had him in first year and I really miss his class. He's very interested in his work and very good to students. Loved the geo rock and mineral test!! hehe- SO great
Wonderful! Very Intelligent Professor and wants to see students succeed. nice guy

Hanes is simply one of the great professors that make 1st year bearable. Learn to appreciate him and his class because man there are some bad profs out there
A really great guy. Gotta Love his hockey Stick. The only thing I disliked about his exams was that he takes marks off for guessing in the multiple choice. But overall his exams are very reasonable and there is lots to remember in the course. Still easy
knows his stuff
He is a great prof. I was overwhelmed when I listened to his first lecture about what engineering is all about, and I thought this guy must be tough. I was also scared when I looked at the lab manual. There is lots to remember in 151, but exams are easy!!!
most interesting class in 1st year and all because of the teaching. he is enthusiastic and humourous. thank you
This guy rocks!!!
Dr. Hanes is an amazing professor. You can tell that he absolutely loves what he does, which makes his students like it as well. One of the best profs I had in first year engineering, his lectures are very interesting and enjoyable.
This guy absolutely ROCKS. He is incredibly intelligent, makes everything relevant, and is so interesting to listen to. He got me so interested in geo that I went into Geological Engineering. I can't say enough about him.
Hanes = AWESOME Prof! Whether you believe it or not but this is the *Easiest* class. Attend class regularly. KEEP UP with the course material since it's very hard to remember everything in the end . Do old exams(he often repeats questions)= Get 80-85%
A really really great professor. Too good to describe in words. This is a bird class compared to your other Engineering courses! I love his hockey stick. Only thing I disliked about him is that he takes marks off for guessing in multiple choice exams.
Had him few years back. Wonderful prof. The Geo field trip was Awesome. Really enjoyed it. This course has the smallest failure rate in first year. Almost everyone I know did very well in his class. Helpful course for those going into civil/mining/geo
Extra-ordinarily great guy. Will offer great advice and lots of help to those who are interested in going into Geological Engineering at the time of program selection in February each year. apsc151 was very interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed his class.
Tonnes to remember in APSC 151 but interesting course and interesting prof!
What can I say about him? AMAZING. I love him (but I hate geo :P). I am so glad to be in his class. He is always available for me outside class. Oh and he's such a sweet father to his two daughters. :) Go Hanes! (Hockey stick is amazing too). :D
Awesome guy, I love him. I mean, really, what else can I say, one of the best first year teachers and the way he teaches just makes it easier to understand. wow. great guy.
Awesome guy, he balances all the science stuff with quotes and movies, nice stuff. And he's so fun to talk to.
Story teller hanes...
wow i almost want to do mining now
Amazing guy, incredible prof, he is the reason I am in geo.
Awsome teacher. Love the quotes
Hanes is a very good teacher. He takes a course which many people would fine boring, and makes it fairly interesting. I've really enjoyed his class.
great. He keeps it interesting. Love the quotes.
One of the best profs I've had in uni.
Great teacher! The lectures are entertaining; who wouldn't like to learn about volcanoes!
Try to do really well in this class since it is probably the only easy class in first year. It should boost your marks. Watch out for APSC112 and 142 in the winter. Those are hard ones. This prof is so awesome. Exam pattern is always same as past years
What a nice guy, his classes are always interesting and if you pay attention properly, theres always witty humor to be found.
Don't have any words to describe how awesome this prof is. I love every aspect of his course. I'm interested in chemical engineering, but my second choice of interest would be geological engineering(environmental option) and this guy sparked my interest
Professor Hanes has a genuine interest in the students, he goes out of his way to make things better for us.
Rocks suck!!! But Hanes Rocks!!!
What a prof! Dr. Hanes likes what he does and it shows (his energy level in class is always up!). Rocks & minerals are quite boring, but Hanes somehow makes you want to learn about them. This man is a God!
A great professor who is really into his work
Great man. Who knew the world of Rocks could be that wonderful? I really love your class
Dr.Hanes is super awesome. One of the most amazing professors in the history of engineering at Queen's. He's a great guy who really cares about your education and is always willing to help.
Hanes is the nicest prof there is - he really cares about his students, which is awesome
Hanes is one of the best profs I have so far. He makes geology a lot more interesting than I thought it would be.
Great prof. I'm going in to geological because of him.
this may be the only course I fail, but it's not the profs fault
Hanes was an awesome teacher...he really cared. His exams were incrdibly hard, unless you realized he reused questions from past years. If it weren't for those old exams, i would've failed the midterm
His exams are huge. Like 23-24 pages long. It almost seemed like a book to me when I first saw his exam. He's not an Easy marker in the long-answer questions, but not hard either. Do old exams-most of the questions and concepts are repeated every year!
Wonderful teacher. Can be boring if you don't like Geology. But you will realize few years later after you're done first year, how awesome that class was. Gotta love all the labs, Geo Field Trip, his quotes, and enthusiasm. Know diagrams for final exam.
Made me stay awakE!
Very nice and approachable. Few years back I sent him an E-mail before the exams, and he even wished me good luck on my exams. One of the most memorable courses I've taken in my University career. He is empathetic towards needs/concerns of students.
A Legend in the school. Professor Hanes has been teaching the first year geology course for like 20 something years to several thousands of queens first year engineering students. Tries to make the course and lectures as interesting as possible.
Great prof, fun if irrelevant course. Steal his hockey stick, froshies!
Professor Hanes is AWWWWWW-SOME. Hanes, buddy, Can't we have a course like APSC 152 in the winter term which would be Geology Part Two. We've got 2 courses for Chem, Calc, and Phys. We need 2 courses in first year geology as well. Cheers!
Amazing Prof. That sums it up.
Unlike most other courses, you don't need any super Analytical abilities to do well in this course. If you can keep up with the readings (which is a challenge sometimes, in addition to keeping up with other courses) you can get a great mark from him
His course was truely awesome. Boring in the beginning, got interesting later on. Nice guy, answers all questions in depth and makes sure you understand the stuff. Exams were very fair and reasonable. Rock and Mineral test is the easiest
Hanes rules. This course boosted my average. I found the final exam to be much easier than the midterm. Try to get old midterms from your frecs, then you'll do even better. He loves the course, that was evident.
This class was way too easy if you are good at memorizing. Huge exams but they're a Joke for the most part
Excellent Professor.Clear, helpful and understands what he speaks.
Good prof. He loves the course and is enthusiastic in lectures. APSC 151 was a good Introduction to Geology. I think it would be cooler if he could get the course name changed from "Earth's Physical Environment" to "Earth System Engineering
I don't think he is particularly helpful, unless ofcourse you are going into Geological Engineering..then he is VERY helpful. He does NOT always reply back to E-mails, and sometimes you have to remind him by sending 2nd E-mail. He's still a nice prof
Probably the only professor in the history of Queen's to bring a hockey stick to class. That's why he is also known as Hockey Stick Hanes. He has lots of wisdom to share and is one of Queen's University's greatest profs. Make him head of the Geo dept.
An average professor for a 100-level course, but horrible for upper-year Geology courses. All you engineers should be glad you only have one course with him, or your Hanes-hype would get crushed.
I thought he was fantastic in both a first year course and in upper year courses. He makes sure you understand concepts, is always willing to go that extra mile to help out, and is a great guy all around in addition to being one of the best profs around.
A very nice prof at Queen's, one of VERY FEW. He knows how to teach, but the course itself needs some restructuring. What kind of university makes u memorize 50 rocks and minerals? is that even education? what the **** are we paying for?
Hanes you are amazing. Thanks for the good mark
Easiest prof ever. If you fail his exam in December, and rewrite the exam in April, the April exam would be EXACT SAME as the December exam. To do well, get old cooks/midterms from people you meet in frosh week and study geo 30 mins every day.
Coolest prof I ever have. Hippies... crazy hockey stick hanes!!! Geol is the class I missed least in first yera.
He's alright
Best prof in the Geology department.
This course is designed to boost your marks froshies. Awesome awesome prof!!
Hanes just loves Geology... he kinda made me more interested in geo! Do his previous exam papers or you'll fail! Get them from the exam bank and u'll find the answers in his notes. his notes are quite good, use them and listen to his lectures - they help understanding the stuff but be sure not to fa
One of the most cool professors I have had in first semester at Queen's, but there is lots of memorization to do in this course. Quite interesting stuff.
Great class, learned alot from him, great teacher also. Thumbs up to this guy!
yes hanes, geology was awesome. thank you for bringing out the hippy in all of us. i think i may love rocks too.
Good prof, interesting material, but I just could not stay awake at those lectures. Hated geo for the amount of memorization involved, but that wasn't the prof's fault.
Lots to remember and exams are easy only if you have done previous years exams
He's so disorganized, and he comes up with the most random things. His lectures don't follow the labs very well at all and he should try and teach things that are actually interesting - without the cartoons and random diagrams that have no purpose. Geology should be removed as a first year course.
He's a pretty good guy, not his fault the course is boring for 95% of the people. On a side note, I love trying to memorize 50 different types of rocks
Good clear and very easy to understand.
Really nice guy and good prof. The material he teaches is interesting.. not to the degree I'd actually consider taking it voluntarily
great teacher
Honestly. Who likes Rocks? I don't. that is until i took this course. His enthusiasm and knowledge of Geology are inspirational. If he get's through to you like he did for me, he is amazing. Otherwise the course material is just boring. It all depends on you're perspective of Geology.
Didn't really like the course, but the prof is good and loves geology
Sweet Hockey Stick
He definitely knows about rocks. Despite being a relatively boring subject for me, he manages to keep me mildly interested in the course material.
He is propably one of the greatest teachers I've ever met , he made me realize that geology is much much bigger and interrelated to other sciences than I thought before. He is kind of "always busy" , his appearance also indicates being superbusy . He is definetly into geological sciences.
Interesting lectures, horrible course....
Okay, I am going to be honest here. This prof has a very good reputation among students, but when I was in first year engineering many years ago, he would not reply back when I emailed him. I emailed multiple times I wanted to see my exam, then he finally did reply, but never fixed a date. He's not really helpful (Atleast I didn't find him)
Hockey Stick Hanes is so boaring!!
BEST PROF EVER.
Hanes is a great prof, he explains things really well and his lectures are always clear. He encourages class participation and you can tell he genuinely cares about his students, regardless of class size. Awesome!
Amazing prof! Absolutely dedicated to what he teaches. He deserves nothing but respect from his students.
Uses slides and goes fast. Hockey stick for a pointer.
Awesome :D
Influential, brilliant, moving, poignant, and honourable.
When you're in class it doesn't seem like class, its just interesting
Amazing speaker. Apparently been at Queen's for many decades, absolutely passionate about what he teaches, makes class interesting. In labs learn many rocks. Would have never taken a geology class unless was mandatory at Queen's for first year engineers but worth it just to hear Hockeystick Hanes talk
the class is interesting if you don't know anything about science, but if you do it's SO boring. easy, but boring. it's all common sense. i lost a lot of respect for him when he had 4 graphs in a row all with time on the y-axis....rookie mistake
Great prof! Old-fashioned but effective teacher. The exam was the exact same as the one from exambank!
Hanes was amazing! Couldn't have asked for a better proff. Makes the stuff extremely interesting and gets you interested in geology.
a fantastic professor, goes thru the material quite nicely and effectively, cares about his students and makes volcanoes and earthquakes interesting. exam is very fair and pretty much the exact same as from exam bank. loved this guy
Very good Professor
Amazing guy, really got me interested in the material. Its definitely different than other class styles and you have to get used to taking notes and listening carefully. Labs are pretty cool if you put the effort in.
Amazing lecturer, he is extremely clear and makes everything interesting. Difficult exams, study old ones to do well
Loved this class!!!! and the hockey stick.
Great teacher. Exams are nice and easy
Honestly just study previous mid terms and exams from the exam bank to pass with a high mark. The exam from 2015 was 90% of the same material as the one in 2016.
Amazing prof teaching a course that a lot of people don't really seem care about. Met with him outside of class for a long discussion, ended up helping me pick my major. Awesome guy and very good professor, loved both him and his course.
He is a nice person. But he is old. His lecture is efficient but boring so you have to force yourself to focus. But if you follow up, you won't regret.
Class is boring, try not to fall asleep! His theory on exams is stupid, why do I care is the theoretical mark for knowing nothing is 20%? The content on there is basically multiple guess because its a bunch of stats! Does he not remember talking about key concepts? because random numbers were on there more than the big ideas! Its a crap shoot!
John Hanes is the best prof this university has ever seen. All tested material comes from the lectures but is also reused year after year so if you study old exams you'll do fine. All exams and midterms are 100% memorization, but the lectures are great. 10/10 would go for a hike up a volcano with this guy. Highly recommend.
