Dr. Hanley was pretty good. Learn what you need to learn for your career.
Dr. Hanley is 1 of the most caring and hard working professors at PCC. He gave us a lot of homework and reading quizzes because he just wanted us to prepare for his lectures and exams. Dropped lowest quiz score. His exams were a little hard but if you attend his lectures and do his homework, you should be fine. I will take him again for Ochem 2.
Definitely a hard grader, but he's hard because he wants you to learn. He really is a good professor, but if you're lazy, drop the class. If you think you'll get by with just homework, drop the class. He will help you out, but you need to show that you are willing to learn. Sad that he won't be teaching chem 2. Lots of homework nd studying expected
He gives so much homework! But it is doable and it helps so much. His reading quizzes get ridiculously hard but it forces you to read the book and prepares you for the lecture. His tests are hard but he curves A LOT and gives A LOT of extra credit. His lecture is good and he's very knowledgeable. Overall a great professor!
Professor Hanley is one of the most caring professors I've ever had. He is also one of the hardest and most challenging. If he sees you trying and willing to learn, he will help you and make sure you get it. Go to his office hours and ask questions, he is really helpful. He gives daily quizzes so you have to read the book before the lecture.
Professor Hanley can teach well, but his exams are far more challenging than his lectures. Will call you out in front of the class and make you look stupid for not understanding something. He is always willing to help. Come prepared to save yourself the embarrassment of being called out in front of the class. Lots of HW and EC. OK overall.
Professor Hanley is by far the most challenging professor I have ever had. I earned an A in the class but it was very challenging. His tests and quizzes are very hard and it requires ALOT of reading and preparation. He gives out a lot of Extra credit and curves the tests. I would not take his class again.
makes you work for it, but you can def get an A
go for him, hes the best professor!
Feels like high school, but rewards effort more than talent; quizzes and HW are almost 50% of the grade. reading and lab quizzes are open notes, prepared ahead. don't expect full points on X-cred (very challenging problems). He does notices how much effort you put in to the class, so ask questions; strict on lab safety.
He makes you read half a chapter up to a whole chapter before lecturing on it and will quiz you on it. IT IS AN OPEN NOTE QUIZ. So if you take good notes you'll be fine. For his closed note quizzes I'd say study the integrated problems heavily. He's a funny and caring professor who makes you work for your grade. Participation counts for 3%.
Rude and is not helpful. He was lazy with with my class and expected us to learn in one sitting . You will struggle a lot if youre a full time student . Too much homework + the quizzes and exams are very difficult which he brags about . He will not give you more time to work on homework . I would not take this class ever again
Was motivated to take this class because of the good comments on professor being caring and funny . Had to drop his class . His lecture went too fast. And is biased with answering emails . Not caring and funny person sorry
Homework and exams are too hard for a beginners class. This class will be easy for you if you're proficient with chemistry .
Hanley is a good teacher and his tests are long (or hard how you see it) but not impossible. He gives out lots of hw that are easy to hard, also gives lots of EC. Chem is generally a conceptually easy subject, but if you cant understand the material you have to put in more work to do well. Also it is a summer class so it WILL be harder, obviously.
This class was so challenging for intro-chem. It is hard to get a good grade if it is the first time you take chemistry. The tests were long but not hard. If you are doing well with the homework, you should be fine. The tests are not harder than the homework. He gave A LOT of EC. So it is possible to get A if you work for it.
Horrible professor. Makes you feel stupid for asking questions. Long tests on content not discussed in class. Makes students learn the most difficult concepts and then tests on even harder things. Does not care about his students at all. Took him during summer and more than half the class dropped. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
I dont think he is hard, he just gives too much hw, not hard, but time consuming. As long as you do most of the hw the tests aren't hard and definitely doable. Also idk about others but I think chem is a straight forward subject. Anyhow, he is a good prof who knows his stuff. He didnt graduate from U Penn for nothing. Taken him if you want to learn
I took Hanley in the summer. Definitely would agree he's very challenging, sarcastic, and the homework was a bit too much but it really prepares you mentally for future chem classes. Chances are if you are in this class you need chem 1a for your major, and it gets way more challenging.
He gives a ton load of hw that require quite some time to complete. Moreover, the HW was 25% of my grade so NOT doing the hw may hurt your grade. However, towards the last few weeks of the semester he gave enough extra credit to boot your grade whole letter grade. WARNING: His lectures aren't really the best and can be quite confusing.
Terrible. Lectures are poor, sloppy and directionless. You will teach yourself, but not by the means that best serve you because you will spend all your time reading the book and arbitrarily copying it into another notebook, because he quizzes on the book, not just on Organic Chemistry subject matter. Also, he's a condescending and obnoxious.
Dr. Hanley gives tons of work, including reading the contents will be covered in the next class, but notes are allowed. Moreover, he writes hard exams (it is organic chemistry tho) Rather, he forces you to work for your grade. It will be better if you try all the problem in the textbook to prepare for the exams and quizzes. Btw, he offers some EC.
He kinda do things based on his mood, sometimes hes nice and sometimes he can be super mean. There are quiz every class and tons of work to do.
Professor Hanley is a good professor. He teaches in a way that you could understand and no question is a stupid question. He grades VERY hard gives an insane amount of homework. the questions can be ridiculously hard. the tests are straightforward IF you study . finals accumalative, so keep previous tests and study them. you will learn ALOT!!
This professor is very tough this was my first time taking chem and I had no idea what was going on half of the time. His tests are hard and he gives homework assignments that are due everyday, I could barely keep up with my other classes trying to do the homework he would assign. This is not an easy class so be prepared if you do take him.
First time taking chem? If you want a professor who is going to take their time & explain thoroughly to you... it isn't this one! LOTS of homework assigned daily, class moves quickly, would try to ask questions in private and get responses about how I was wrong but no helpful guidance. Felt like I was being talked down to. Wouldn't recommend.
Canvas heavy course, meaning endless problems that makes you redo another one if you make slight mistakes. This instructor makes you memorize way more than any other chem 22 prof at pcc and gives problems that are unnecessarily complicated for an intro chem course. Currently, I have an A with another chem 22 prof at pcc.
Utterly, terrible. I have an A in the class, but based on his treatment toward other students, I must say that it is more harsh than respectful. If you must choose this class, you will spend a lot more time on this homework more than any other course (coming from someone who has 15 units this semester). If you ask for help, he'll make you feel dumb
His closed-note quizzes and exams are harder than the book and he takes points off easily. He's very knowledgeable and forces you to never fall behind by having quizzes every class. He does what is best for you, but he can be very blunt if you're not passing. He likes if you ask questions and is happy to answer. The class is very time consuming.
Professor Hanley will make sure that you learn chemistry. His lectures are very insightful and thorough but his homework is long and difficult. You must put a lot of time into doing homework. His tests are fair game. If you paid attention in class and study normally, you'll pass his tests. If you take this class, just beware of the homework.
His lectures are pretty informative. He does give a LOT of homework, even some STEM tutors couldn't even figure out his HW problems, and mind you, this is an introductory chemistry class. A lot of the homework material is harder than the material he goes through in class, and if you ask him for help, he can be quite rude. He isn't very lazy though.
Doesn't post lecture slides, no EC, all MC tests, and pop quizzes. Not the worst teacher I've had but by far the rudest. He calls out students who aren't caught up to speed with the class, and it was always very humiliating and awkward for the rest of us. The hardest part was having the nerve to ask for help since he's so moody.
Tests are 25+ pages long. Hw is due EVERY class at the exact FIRST minute of class or its late. Pop quizzes and open note quizzes. Reinforces memorization. Lectures really well but Not helpful in o hours. Can be rude or super nice(hes moody.) Studied 30 hours/week + extra 10 for labs. Was Barely passing but gives EC end of semester.
Horrible professor. Condescending and not very helpful. Lectures dont compare to the hw. His teaching is comparable to that of someone teaching you 1+1 but having you solve an integral on the hw. Took calc 2 with this chem 22 class and I had so much more hw for chem and was way more stressed out with this chem class. DO NOT TAKE.
If you dont do the practice quizzes which are voluntary you will fail. There are problems that will come up on the test that are not on the hw but on the voluntary practice quizzes. They will come up. He is willing to help. Lots of hw.
Now Personally I am not the smartest kid ever but this professor was honestly the worst. From day one I knew I was going to need tutoring but even the tutors were like who do you have. Saving his name, there either annoyed or already confused. He was so rude & condescending. I have also never wanted to write a prof until now to warn other students.
Professor Hanley's class was probably the most difficult class I've taken, but also one of my favorite. He makes you work hard, but he's also always available to help. The constant quizzes were annoying, but they made me stay current with the material.
I took 8A/B with Hanley and he is very caring, despite not appearing as such. If you want to learn ochem, then he is arguably the best choice. I spent 30+ hours studying/working for his class each week to get an A, but I know some others who spent less time to achieve the same result. Ask questions if you don't understand and forget about your ego.
Literally dropped the class the first day literally so much homework. His work is not understandable. This class is so confusing you don't really learn chem. Will be taking another class. He wants chapter 1-8 done but Saturday it's to much work.
He made this class way too difficult for an intro to chem class. I have taken anatomy and microbio in 6 weeks but I ended up withdrawing and taking the diagnostic test. I recommend taking the diagnostic test. His class has an overwhelming amount of assignments. The examples he provide are nothing like on the test.
This professor is rude and condescending. I asked for help and for some extra learning materials but he replied YOUTUBE. man if I was gonna learn through youtube, why did I pay for this class. The youtubers teach better than him tho. Just learn through youtube yall. When I dropped, there were only like 7 people were left in his class.
I think there are only 5 people left. HOLY crab and starfishes. INSANE AMOUNT OF WORKS. No regard for student well being. Too many assignments for 6 weeks. At least 3 times harder than other professors.
This Professor is terrible. He asked students to check-in three times in a meeting, he randomly picked students to answer questions, and he asked students to upload the meeting notes each time in 10 mins. There are over 20 assignments to turn in on the first day of school. It took me 7-8 hrs to finish them. I had no time to do my other classes' hw.
I had him some time ago, but he was very disrespectful at times. If you ask him a question, he may try to make you feel stupid for asking the question. He might embarrass you too for it. Other than that, if you want to pass, be it online or in person, just resort to tutoring from other sources and outside help.
Checking on students 5 times every lecture and abusing the loophole in attendance is not a requirement rule by giving out participation point for being in class. Control freak and treating us like 8th graders. Take him if you are a chem major but otherwise stay away! More like 7 units class than a 5 units class.
!!!do not take this professor!!! he made the course WAY too hard for an intro chem class, and so many assignments due in the first couple days. By the time I dropped out, the class went from 35 to 6 people left. It's possible to pass but not with a good grade and will drag down your gpa. The professor simply does not care about his students.
The class was meant for an introduction chemistry. I only needed chem 22 and he was teaching chem 1a materials . Terrible!!! Too many homeworks.
Too many assignments! If you are taking other science classes and are working - AVOID. He doesn't teach at all. His zoom meetings are basically like office hours. He is very rude and likes to take unnecessary polls to make sure you are present. The hours you need to study/ do assignments/ labs for this class is x10 more than the required amount.
Lecture are basically YouTube videos of some chick and he rarely make videos. Mind you this is community college. We are not used to the UC style of teaching. Lecture time are discussion with office hour where you ask questions. HW points are not worth the amount of time you have to spend to finish them. 6-8 hours for just homework 3 times a week.
I thought I would be able to work hard and maintain a good grade in class, however the workload is INSANE. Although he expects to scheduled our time accordingly, keep in my mind we are all stem majors who have to commit time to other classes as well. DO NOT take this class, if you are not majoring in Chemistry. The workload is over 30hrs a week.
As others have said he is very knowledgeable but TERRIBLE AT TEACHING and being a teacher. Half the class dropped before the midterm. Students are also required to answer his zoom polls and make them feel bad if the student said the wrong answers. Very toxic environment for learning.
I do not generally rate professors even if they are bad, but I need to let anyone know considering this professor, DO NOT TAKE HIM! The worst professor I have ever encountered, does not care at all about students and makes tests 1000x more difficult than the practice/homework. Expects us to know everything already even for an intro course.
Prof. Hanley is a nice guy. He is happy to answer questions and replies to emails quickly. But his class is a GRIND if you take the summer semester. Expect lectures to be 6.5 hrs (M-TH) with 3-4 hrs of HW. Make sure to ask lots of questions, take good notes, be on time to class b/c he takes attendance polls. Tough class, but I learned a lot.
TOUGH GRADER!!! Prepare to spend 30 hours a week doing just homework, excluding studying for exams. Please avoid at all cost.
Professor Hanley is extremely rude to his students in person and online. He is one of the worst professors I have ever had and I dont suggest taking any class with him. Before week 5, half the class had dropped, 1 person had an A and the other 12 had below Cs. He was even more rude to that one person who had an A, I dont even know why. Dont take.
This course is tough because organic chemistry is tough. Don't ever expect something easy on any ochem courses. Also, let's make a thing clear. Professor Hanley is not a tough grader. Tests are heavy, but he is not a tough grader. He curved our test scores a lot, a lot. He actually is an easy grader on lab reports and journal summary assignments.
This guy is the definition of bringing your personal problems into work. This man is bi-polar as hell and has weird mood swings. He's extremely rude to students, even people who put in a massive amount of effort and are getting an A in the course. Lectures are good but other professors do better and aren't abrasive and rude for no reason. AVOID!!!
It was tough, but it was a summer course, so that was to be expected. His lectures were clear and he always answered all our questions. His exams were tough, but they were always curved quite a bit and his grading in the lab was super easy. Just show up everyday, do the work, ask lots of questions, and you'll do fine.
I took Hanley for both Chem 8A/B and had a great experience. His lectures were engaging and he encouraged lots of questions. Some students didn't like the reading quizzes, but they were always open-note quizzes. Labs were super easy - just show up and do the work. All the questions on the exams were literally copy/pasted from the textbook.
He is hard to approach. Gets mad if you don't understand something and ask for help. Easily irritated. We had lots of quizzes but never any lectures.
Hanley's class was one of the hardest classes I've taken, but I probably learned more than in most any other class. The class was a lot of work, but he gives unlimited opportunities to earn points, will answer as many questions as you ask and was always flexible about due dates and make-ups.
I look this class over the summer, so it was a lot of work crammed into a short period, but Hanley was a great teacher. He doesn't have any late penalties for anything and he lets you do assignments multiple times if you make mistakes. The exams were all multiple choice and were very similar to the homework problems.
I took him in-person. It was an easy A. He's really nice and always willing to answer questions. Just show up for class and do the work. I went to office hours a lot and he was always happy to help. When I had a family emergency, he was very understanding and let me take the exam a week later when I was ready.
Ochem has a reputation for being a super hard course, but that wasn't my experience in Hanley's class. It was challenging, but he made it very interesting and understandable. He was always happy to explain concepts again and answer any questions we had. His quizzes are open-note and the exams are taken straight from the book.
Chem 1a ,Professor Hanley should not have so many negative comments . He is accommodating. He offer us a practice quiz before we take the quiz. and the exams he just changed a little. He dropped the lowest exam score and examination help us to pass . That is y I can get a B in his class . guy. Please consider him.
Just finished taking his intro chem class. he was always generous with his time, loved to answer our questions in class. he let up redo assignments and the exams were just like the homework. no late penalties and at the end of the semester, he was really nice about final letter grades - I was very pleasantly surprised.
I took Professor Hanley in person. It was a joy having him as my Intro to Chem professor! Main point to do well in his class: Attendance. He goes over complex problems in class which gives students the opportunity to ask questions. He might seem intimidating at first, but don't be, because he is super caring and will answer any questions!
Dr. Hanley is blunt and has a dry humor that I appreciated. He challenges you in class and on his homework assignments but his exams are generally considerably easier. He's always available during office hours and wants his students to succeed. If you want to do well, pay attention, read the modules and DO THE PRACTICE QUESTIONS... more than once.
Dr. Hanley really pushes us to excel, but he provides tons of help. He starts every class by answering questions for as long as it takes before lecturing on new concepts. He gives unlimited attempts on homework and doesn't impose late penalties. He always let us work with a lab partner and all his exams are just like the homework he assigns.
Professor Hanley lectured well and really understands what he teaches. His assigns alot of homework but each assignment is 2-3 questions. Homework has unlimited attempts and only keeps highest score. No late penalties for homework. You can study for tests by doing more attempts on homework since it is a big bank of questions and takes the top score
I love that he offers extra credit for getting together with your friends to study and let's up redo the homework as much needed. There's also no late penalties for anything. Pretty chill class.
He's an good nice professor gives extra credit and drops lowest test score. Do not use the online textbook he provides in Canvas. It has so many mistakes! Just check out Introductory Chemistry textbook from the library.
Professor Hanley made the lectures interesting and was always very helpful when I asked questions. He's very fair (no late penalties and drops you lowest exam) and gives plenty of extra credit. Chemistry is not my best subject, but he made it doable and kinda fun.
Professor Hanley was an amazing professor. He offered so many extra credit opportunities and is always willing to help out. However he does not use the textbook and his lecture slides are important to understand the material so showing up to class will matter. Overall I think he is a great professor and encourages to ask questions if you need help.
Dr. Hanley gave one or two homework assignments per week evens only and gave the answers as well. 4 tests, the final is a review of everything STUDY and NO notes. Pure lecture, no group work or projects. There is no late penalty for homework so you can turn it in at the end of the semester BEFORE the final. He drops lowest test so final is optional
Dr.Hanley was a good professor, you just have to put a lot of work in. Overall, organic chemistry is not an easy course but he does offer extra credit, he also encourages students to go to office hours so definitely take advantage of that. Lectures were super heavy and homework was hard to keep track of.
Do Not take during the summer. He completely overloads with online reading for an intro course, & in addition to hw expects students to read, watch multiple videos and then be Tested for "prelab", for which you are graded, before even being introduced to the equipment in class! It feels like a completely backwards way to learn. Avoid.
Pretty hard class, but passable if you put in a lot of time and studying. Biggest mistake is slacking off early in the semester and letting the first few tests ruin your grade. However, he dropped our lowest test scores and he rounded me up from a 77 to B, so he is lenient! Very smart and understanding professor, unless you slack off.
DONT TAKE this professor, he is a disaster. For the prelab, he doesn't explain much in the class, but for the homework, he would give out questions that aren't even in the videos or taught in class. Don't take his class.
Prof Hanley taught a very difficult subject and he was very accessible in and out of class. It consisted of lectures and practice problems in class, and lots of requirements for labs. However, being an ochem class a lot of people in our class felt like it was self-teaching. Although he was accessible, he was unapproachable.
I have no idea why he is a teacher because he clearly doesn't like his job, always moody and mean to his students except those that he is partial to *eyeroll*. This class wasn't incredibly challenging as long as you have the time to work up to 40 hours a week to do sufficient practice. Please take Dr. Tay instead of him!
If you have the option of taking a different professor, do so. Dr. Hanley is arrogant and unaccommodating. He refuses to post his lecture slides, making studying difficult. The problems he does in class are nothing like the homework and exams. If you have a restrictive schedule and can't attend office hours, do not take him.
I enjoyed his class a lot. He grades your participation btw but it actually helped me step out of my comfort zone and I think I learned more that way. All self-studying but he is willing to help if you ask. Kind of intimidating and answers vaguely because he wants YOU to figure it out. EC opportunities. Pace yourself accordingly and don't slack off
Please do not take this Professor if you prioritize having time for any other class. Tests are all multiple choice. You take the exam with a scantron, and he throws away all scratch work so you can only see the question and your answer DURING office hours only. It makes it extremely difficult to learn from mistakes and do better on the next exam.
brodie looks like peter griffin on king david
It was a difficult introductory chem course. I took it during the summer, yet he was not accommodating. He didn't believe in dropping the lowest grade or curving and was generally unapproachable for questions. Tests also included seemingly unimportant and one-off information, which was annoying since the tests were a large bit of the grade.
He called us bumps on a log and screamed the f-word in class. PCC should fire him. Also, his lecture is terrible because he just quickly regurgitates information and doesn't pace himself to go in depth and remember that we are not organic chemists just yet.
First week of Chem22, he didn't go over sig figs cause he quoted: "I'm going to skip over sig figs cause I'm going to assume that you know them." It actually took me until week 6 that I finally understood what sig figs are, with no help from this "professor."
Honestly, Hanley isn't as bad as most of these reviews made it seem. His course requires a bit of self-study, but it was relatively doable (with the consideration that I am a STEM major). The lecture is understandable if you even briefly look over the textbook. Attendance does matter, especially for labs. There are extra credit opportunities.
Good professor teaching a tough course. He is a good lecturer and is there if you need additional help. This is a tough class so it's on you to actually have a solid concept of the material. Reading quizzes are tough too, even though they are open notes. Good professor overall but this is a tough course so beware.
You're on your own basically because he only lectures after you already self-study for the reading quiz. His lectures are not helpful at all for the exams and finals. He'd give out random homework packets (outside of what's on the syllabus) and tell you they're due next week. Also very inconsiderate and uncaring towards students. Avoid at all cost!
I dropped the class because of how mean he is. There's a pop quiz at the start of every class so if you're not in your seat the minute class starts, good luck. He says "turn in what you have" knowing you're on question 3. And if you're 10 minutes late, your grade tanks bc your quiz grade will be a 0. He also loves to say "figure it out."
Very sarcastic dry humor and will persuade you to answer your own question. Appreciates students who go to office hours and gives EC for asking him a question on the lecture. Made me actually want to learn more about chemistry and dude is an extremely smart guy if you have some burning chemistry questions he explains pretty well.
He assigns hefty homework assignments around scheduled exam dates, and they are due on the day of the exam so that's a really cheap move. Hanley is very toxic, it was incredibly painful to be in the classroom with him for an entire semester, I have no idea how the Chemistry faculty does it. Once he very aggressively shoved a chair across the room.
The negative comments on here are true, DO NOT be fooled. There are just better teachers who care about you understanding the material; he doesn't. Don't think it's an easy course with him either, I warned you. He teaches like he's better than everyone. Like,I'm just trying to learn? Never understood Teachers like this. It's your JOB to teach.
I don't understand why his rating is so low, but organic chemistry is a difficult course. Dr. Hanley made it very doable. He gives full credit for labs most times. There is a synthesis project you will present to the class at the end of the semester. Exams are based off of book questions so do all of them! ACS Final.
This professor wasn't great. We often had pop quizzes covering lectures from the day before, but he would make the quizzes challenging. The majority of his quizzes were calculation-based, so if you don't know the math, you are kinda cooked. His tests are harder than the homework, and there isn't a study guide to help you with the exam.
He's smart, knows what he's talking about, the homework and exams are very difficult. He takes what you learned in lecture and makes the difficulty x100 on both the homework and exams. BUT his intro class did prepare me well for gen chem. No study guides for exams either, it's basically just redo practice quizzes & notes. Go to office hours and SI.
Literally terrible scared me for life I don't even want to take another semester of chem after that.
As a person rude AF. Classwise, useless lectures + required attendance. Often expected to know whole chapters as he quizzes BEFORE actual lecture. Difficult not because Orgo is hard but because he BOMBARDS you with packets & HW daily, leaving NO time to study. Went to office hours 14 times & was helpful 4 times. Only pros are EC & easy Lab grades.
Not a good professor at all. Quizzes at the beginning of each class. Doesn't post lectures online. Expects you to catch onto material quickly and moves on too fast. Talks and answers questions in a super condescending tone.
2 EC pts per week for study groups. He's intimidating and does not seem approachable, which makes coming to class dreadful. Open note reading quiz every start of lecture, but each quiz ranges from 1-10 sections per chapter. Grades lab on completion but sometimes correctness. Work the textbook practice Qs to succeed. Study the canvas HW Qs for exams
