Kick butt teacher~ had fun topics to write about ~ kept classroom discussion exciting ~ definatly take his class!

Be prepared to read Hamlet on your own and answer very vague and oddly worded questions!

He is a total whackjob but i loved it! Real fun, had a passion for writing,very encouraging, introduced new books and ideas. Never a dull moment in his class. If you don't have a sense of humor, don't bother! I loved the whackjob!

Hartner is a fun time. You'll have fun and be inspired. You don't even need a book and you will never be bored. I would totally recommend him!

His ratings here speak for himself, his class is fun and interesting. He is one of the most interesting characters I've ever come across, therfore taking his class promotes a lot of entertainment and interaction.

Pretty good class. Reading Hamlet and Othello takes most of the class time. If you want to do well in this class, listen closely to the little jokes he makes in class. These jokes will be on the quizzes. There is a limit on how many classes students can miss, so space them out wisely. Follow his guidelines when writing papers!!

Hartner is a quite an interesting character. In 102 I had a lot of trouble with his Othello quizzes but otherwise his class was great. He's amazing at teaching Shakespeare and giving modern day comparisons. I wish Hartner taught more classes because life will suck without him.

Hartner rocks. I had him for Eng 101 and 102. I thought his tests in 102 were hard but he always gave me A's on my writing so it made up for it. He's pretty funny and cynical. Just pay attention and you'll do fine.

Great professor. Teaches outside the lines. If you have a problem with breaking societal norms then you need to rethink your petty existence. After you do that, you can appreciate this teacher. If you can't rise above your material existence and shut your cell phone off then your life is worthless. John Hartner is a great teacher.

Hartner is an excellent individual. His dicussions made English way more interesting . Sure, some of it didn't apply to what we were doing, but it's easy to get caught up in a topic. His jokes and impressions seemed to get everyone going. Oh well. He inspired me to learn. -The Raven (haha)

Hartner makes a boring subject easy to understand and actually enjoy. He can break things down into a language that is understandable to today?s youth.He gets straight to the point and tells it like it is. If you get a chance to take one of his classes, you should jump on it. He will bring a light to subject you never thought would be fascinating.

John Hartner is a medium for success! He is always willing to help a student with school as well provide insight into eveyday life. I only wish i had courses left to take that Hartner taught.

I had Hartner first summer of 09'. He is an educated wild man! My friend (zeppo)and I (groucho)had a blast in his class. Not only is it fun but i learned alot as well. I dont read much or watch many movies but i wrote thee best paper of my life while taking his class. i was fascinated with the ability he drew from me. His hippie style rocks!

I think you are a good teacher. I think that if anybody was expecting to learn how to 'write' in this class needs to retake their placement test. If you go into a class like this, you are expected to know how to write an essay. This isn't highschool. Atleast the topics are relating to life instead of some boring story in a book.

Hartner took a topic that I do not find interesting and made it a guaranteed laugh. Ranked by me as one of the most enjoyable classes to have during your education at CCAC. Two thumbs way up!!!

Hartner was probably the best english proffesor i've had at ccac. He took english and made it into something completely understandable. Ever since high school I've worked so hard on my papers for them to be torn apart by an anal teacher, but Hartner understood and actually cared about what I was writing. I really wish he taught 102! Take his class!

He is the type of teacher that other teachers need to be more like.Everyone in school seems to like him alot. And you can tell he is an all around great guy.

Hartner is a great teacher. Granted, his methods aren't always the most orthodox things in the world, but the man certainly knows his stuff. He managed to make me actually want to sit there and listen to him talk, and learn a thing or too as well. He's hilarious, sarcastic, and more insightful, by far, than any other CCAC teacher.

This guy is hilarious. The best thing since mayonaisse (he told me to say that on here, so DON'T delete it). Interesting and easy... but lacks quality in his Sean Connery Impressions. Regardless, I highly recommend this class to anyone interested in writing about just about anything (except sports). Great Teacher. Hats off to Johnny Hartner.

I'm an English major, so I've had many English professors. Prof H is THE BEST by far. Seriously. If you think you hate English, take one of his classes. His laid back hippie style may not work for everyone, but I learned a lot more in this 'Community College' class than I did in 'University' classes. He's the bee's knees. CHEERS!

Hartner is an interesting guy. He is an easy grader. However, I feel that I haven't learned anything "English related" since I started the class. His lectures are basicly comprised of pop culture which is not the title of the course. If you are looking for a good grade and not a good education, take him.

Hartner is an awesome teacher to have at CCAC! I had him for English 101 and The Art of Film (English 120). Hartner is an awesome dude, straight up..If you go to class, write the papers, life will be a piece of cake for you! Hartner has a great sense of humor and can make anyone laugh! Hartner was my first college teacher. It was a great way to start my college experience. Unlike other english teachers he keeps the class interesting. He really helps you get in detail with your essays making it extremely easy to write them. He is very unique and i suggest all teachers to get some tips off of him. I LOVE HARTNERRRRRR

Hartner is a brilliant man. He does make class interesting, he is readily available to answer any questions and gives paper layouts making them easier to write. He relates English to everyday life and makes it humorous. It's a different approach and different perspective to writing. But I have learned a great deal from him!

He doesn't use a textbook. However, it doesn't mean that he doesn't teach. He teaches just like chats with students. His assignments are not very hard but it's better to follow his simple rules to get good grades.Bottom line is: an article can be boring but cannot be gramatically wrong.

I've been in college for a few years now, and I can count on one hand the number of professors that truly love what they do. Hartner is one of them. His love for literature shows in everything he says and does, and he's always willing to answer questions and give advice if needed. You'll learn so much without even realizing it. Incredible.

Hartner is very passionate about what he does. A lot of people say he rambles and talks about nothing of importance and doesn't teach anything, that's not true. You should know basic english once you get to ENG101 in college. If you can write papers and follow instructions, there's no reason you won't do well. He makes class funny and interesting.

You can tell that he loves his job. He also loves to just talk. The class was not very difficult and had few assignments. The assignments were graded lightly as well, he is very clear as to what he is looking for. I recommend him.

Hartner is one professor who does really love his job and English. His teaching tactics is off the wall at first but he knows how to bring the writer out in you. I was not thrilled to be taking an English class but after his class I did not want leave. If you have the opportunity to take any class from Hartner-- DO IT! You will not regret it!!

Hartner is one of the best professors I've ever had. If any subject would be terrible, you would think it would be Literature, but he made it worth while. He makes you laugh with his jokes and voice interpretations, but does grade strictly on papers. Every teacher should be like Johnny because then we'd all pay attention! TAKE HIM! :)

His class is utterly fantastic if you are decent at english as a subject. His only downfall is sometimes he gets a little off topic. If you don't understand something, let him know! He is a very cool guy. Also note that he hates commas and loves old movies.. :)

Assignments make you think but are not hard once you get going. Graded fairly too. Teaches the younger students how fortunate they are now a days and opens your eyes to more than English. Amusing !

You don't have much homework at all. He pretty much talks the whole class and all you have to do is write papers. Very easy going but pushes you. I would suggest to take him.

John Hartner is the best teacher Iv EVER had! He is inspirational with how he teaches. Everyone says that he talks about himself, and it's true, but he (almost) always has a good reason for it. Hartner gives challenging projects, but he only takes away points for major "boo-boo's." B4 taking this class, I HATED English. Now I LOVE It!

Hartner was one of the best professors I've had at my CCAC career. He assigns papers that are interesting. He was made me a better writer. He is truly an amazing guy. He cares about you as a student. I wish he taught 102! I will miss Hartner next semester!

All he did was talk about himself. He is my favorite professor. He did talk about himself but there were reasons why. Some were used as examples to get us motivated to work or to explore ourselves. . He is funny as hell.

though english is my second language I was able to pass with A in Hartner Class because I knew that, prof. Mr. Hartner was an awesome teacher. The only fault I had was clarity in regards to the syllabus, somethings needed to be updated. But grading and what he expected in terms of the papers that were due was very clear. As long as you follow the directions and try you will do well in his class. Also, he doesn't make you buy a book which is great!

I had Hartner's class 2 semesters ago for 101 and I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT! He is the reason that i enjoy writing as much as i do! I owe him every bit of respect that he deserves. I decided to take Hartner the following term for the only other class that he taught, film and that too was an amazing experience! If you need Eng 101, take Hartner

Fantastic instructor! He teaches you how to correctly format quotes, and how to avoid unwanted things in essays, papers, research essays, etc. Helps you develop a writing style specific to the way one wants to write. Also he is very compromising if one happens to not do well, allowing for rewrites in certain situations. Highly recommended!

Great teacher. You will stay awake. teaches you how to correctly format an essay. NO text book needed. He helps if you ask for it. Try and you will pass.

His name is Hartner. Plain and simple. He is an awesome guy with a very interesting personality. Have you ever seen The Exorcist? yyyeeeessss hahaha. He has a funny way of making English moderately interesting. Its too bad more literature wasn't written by aliens. He would make it that much better! Give it the kibosh!

He is very sweet and awesome. He turns your bad day into good and makes you laugh with his amazing communication skills. He understand everyone is different and everyone is worth of something in life. He got warm heart.

Hartner is a awesome professor! Loved his class, he keeps you laughing, and entertained! Yes he talks about himself alot, but it normally pertains to what he's teaching. As long as you stick to his skeleton, don't use "you" and a bunch of comma splices your fine! Wish he taught ENG 102! Will be taking him next semester for his film class.

A lot o these reviews say that Hartner talks about himself a lot. He does, but it's ok. I find him to be a genuinely interesting and funny guy. There's not too much work, we wrote maybe 5 papers throughout the semester. Hartner manages to make a dreaded 3 hour English class into something I looked forward to every week. He's hilarious. Probably the best class you will ever have. And it's an English class. Great interesting discussions. Lots of talk about movies. His natural coolness will make you want to do a good job for him. Doesn't make you buy a book.

He might be the best teacher I've ever had; definitely the most open-minded. Good grammar is key to writing the essays. His lectures are mainly stories and genuinely interesting topics. So long as you put in some effort, the class is no problem to pass.

Hartner is phenomenal. He is hysterical and highly intelligent. He will forever be one of my favorite professors. He mostly tells stories and they are fascinating and important to life as well as to class. I wish I could take more classes with him! He gives you the skeleton and thesis to follow for your paper as well as examples. a little choosy on wording sometimes avoid the word you at all costs. a four-hour lecture about writing should be awful he keeps it entertaining even if his jokes are corny sometimes. very forgiving allows a rewrite i dreaded taking this class he made it painless.

Let me start out by saying I hate writing papers. I dreaded this class. But he made it fun and painless. His jokes are a little corny sometimes but that's part of his charm. He tells you exactly what he will dock points for and is pretty lenient. He allowed one late and one rewrite so getting an A is not difficult if you just do your papers.

Hartner is a professor who cares and wants his students to pass. He gives opportunities for rewrites, explains thouroughly and has sample papers for reference. His class has been a breathe of fresh air for me personally. I was never good in English and I'm doing great in this class! It's nice to have a professor who cares so much about his students

This class left an impression on me. Hartner doesn't believe in the textbook approach, and the papers we write are pretty open-ended in the direction to take. He genuinely wants to see his students succeed! Discussions in this class are a joy and grading criteria is very clear. I always find myself laughing rather than crying. One word: inspiring.

Mr. Hartner will always be "the one that got away". I'm heartbroken I won't hear his hilarious, but relevant, stories on a weekly basis anymore. He genuinely wants his students to succeed, which also made me want to impress him. Having English as a second language (I'm from Norway) was no problem as he clearly walked us through all expectations.

Professor Hartner was by far my favorite Professor this semester, and my favorite English teacher of all time. He is an absolutely hilarious teacher, and always has great stories to tell. You'll never leave class bored. I 100% recommend him.

Hes a funny teacher and has good stories to tell but nothing to do with the topic I tended to play on my phone lol. As long as you do the papers that are for the grade youll pass and you can write about anything you want. Very personable and would highly recommend, easy class.

MY MAN WAS AN ABSOLUTE BEAST TO TAKE IN CLASS HIS INSTRUCTIONS ARE VERY CLEAR AND HIS GRADING CRITERIA IS CUT AND DRY THOUGH IT CANT BE RESTRICTIVE AT TIMES. HE DOES GET PICKY WITH SOME CONTENT IN PAPERS BUT IS VERY UPFRONT ABOUT IT. HE GETS A LOT OF HATE FOR NO REASON AND ANYONE THAT GIVES THIS MAN HATE IS A 100% CERTIFIED FLOOZYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Professor Hartner is an amazing teacher. God bless his heart! Very funny and not a difficult class. Course grade is dependent on attendance and papers. We only had to write 5 papers which were really easy. He gives clear instruction of what he wants. He might be an interesting guy but who cares as long as you get a good grade without lots of sweat?

Mr. Hartner is an amusing, witty teacher. Extremely laid back & very caring. He dedicated half of the class to make up assignments students didn't turn in. His grading is extremely fair & completely transparent. He let everyone know what would land an A. The only slight complaint is he could be a little more organized with his blackboard profile.

He was very personable, and you can tell he cares about his students. I will say his instructions are a little bit overwhelming at first. Overall enjoyed his class and helped me become a better writer.

One of the best classes I've had so far. He is big on cultural stuff and gives cool activities. His topic options for papers are interesting, and if challenging at all, in a good way.

I am an alumni, I took these classes many years ago. John was one of the greatest teachers I have ever had. He is a brilliant, inspirational & life changing educator. I can still quote Flaubert & Thomas Gray to this day. I can credit a massive amount of my success since then with the foundation he laid & the potential he saw in me and fostered.

Professor Hartner is an amazing individual. His class is a lot of discussion but he makes these discussions interesting by relating his own life stories to them with a lot of comedic genius intertwined into it. His class is structured with 5 or so essays that you do through the semester. He helps so much with what he expects which makes it easier.

Professor Hartner is a quirky and engaging teacher. Assignments are manageable, and he's happy to provide extra help. unstuck study was a lifesaver for study prep. Overall, a solid class.

I took his class last year, and he is an amazing individual. He made class exciting; he is extremely funny. He is always willing to help students and gives great feedback. He makes it very clear what he expects of his students and their essays. Overall, he is very understanding, and I learned a lot during his course. Hint- Don't use "you".

He makes the grading very clear. Anyone that knows the basic 5 paragraph essay structure and is able to write with proper grammar will be fine.

Professor Hartner was the most interesting English teacher I have ever had! There are five papers in his class. Each one uses a skeleton that lays out exactly how each one should be written. If I had advice for Hartner's class, it would be to start learning how to use semi-colon, and watch out for the midterm if you are a slow writer like me.
