Treats all students like children. Needs to discover concept of androgogy. Trys to mold your mind. Beware.
arrogant. treats you like you are in high school. don't take him
pretty easy class. not a lot of assignments and no tests. show up and participate and you're good to go. i recomend the class and the professor.
true this guy doesn't have much respect for his students but he is one of the funniest SOB's ive ever had. he makes history hard but funny, i find this combination refreshing.
Tons of reading! He makes class interesting and has a good understanding of the topic. He's very particular about writing standards.
No test but quizes and papers. Does not really tell you what he wants you to write about. Quizes are kind of hard because you never know what he wants you to write about. Classes can get a little boring. Has notes on overhead for you to copy so you don't have to listen to him.
The professor has a very likable cander and is very knowledgable about the subject which is good and I had a very positive opinion of him, but I found his writing stnadards to be surprisingly stringent, as well as different from other Professors I have had which surprisingly hurt my final grade.
Would make a great proof reader because he cares little for the content and A LOT about proper english. He has been known to mark down a paper after switching your words for the words you "meant" to use. Avoid him like the plague.
treats the class like a level 4 course
As a 411 class the subject matter is as expected, tough grader on papers, but if you follow his instructions its a lot easier. Only thing to watch out for is the SEMI COLON, if you use it, you get docked.
Prof Harvey seems like one of those Professors that you'd see at a Tavern who would have a beer with you. He's pretty funny but like everyone else has said he grades his papers really quite tough and is unclear on what he exactly wants
I really enjoyed this class, he definetly knows what he is talking about. I came out of this class actually learning something and remembering it! he makes class very interesting and tells hilarious stories about some guy with a chainsaw that was shot at like 18 times in his old neighborhood... kept calling him leatherface.
Harvey is definately a tough teacher. His paper grading is rough, and his lectures tend to be boring. He is, although, very knowledgable on the subject and gets really into lectures from time to time.
I used to think that I was a good writer before taking this class. Now I think I suck. Thanks a lot.
What an ass. Changes grading from paper to paper so you don't know what to do, comes to class late, keeps class past end time, and lectures too quickly to take notes from.
This was a really hard class, but if you put effort into it, you will do well.
The class is pretty tough, if you're not a good writer, don't take it. He is very helpful however if you go and talk to him about where you went wrong. If you put some work into this class, you will be fine!
If you are in graduate school at Berkley. You may get a C in his entry level course.
This was a very challenging class. However, if you do all of your reading and talk to him about your papers you will do fine. If you don't want to do a lot of work, though, don't take this class. I ended up with an A, but spent at least an hour a night reading and a couple on the weekends writing papers.
This class was quite a bit of work, but if you know how to write it will be fine. Ended up w/an A-. There are: 3-3 page papers, 2-5 pagers and a few 1 pg. weekly write ups and that's all you're graded on. Don't take if you're not interested in history. You can miss a weekly write up or 2 w/o penalty
While the comments about Dr. Harvey's Western Civ class may be accurate, the man is not a good professor. He is ostentatious. He does not have a good grasp of his own material. His lectures are boring. His assignments are difficult because he has issues formulating a clear idea of what he wants. His grading is extraordinarily inconsistent.
You could get a great grade in this class if you were God (and therefore knew what Dr. H. wanted, because HE sure as hell doesn't). Arrogant. Unclear. Boring. Arrogant. Doesn't really know his stuff. Did I meantion arrogant? Oh, and the workload? I felt like I was digging the foundation for a house using a spoon.
If you think that Harvey was too unclear in his teachings, maybe you should become a better listener. Harvey is one of the only remaining History profs who actually teaches something he is passionate about. Sorry if you couldnt handle the challenge. This was just a class, imagine what the real world will be like for you.
Easily the best professor I've ever had. Sometimes I wonder what you people are attending college for. Harvey is very knowledgeable, and I learned a great deal from him. Classes were not difficult, because I did my work and I can write above a second grade level. If you don't want to learn or actually earn a grade, then stop going to college.
Totally agree with the previous comment. He is a tough(er) grader, but if you attend class while at least sober, he always makes sense. Lectures are only boring if you are not at all interested in history, papers have tough, but reasonably grading.
This class was so much work. The papers we did were difficult and took a lot of time to do. He made **** remarks throughout the semester. He knew the material very well but didn't teach it in an interesting way. Be prepared to write a lot of papers and do some outside research.
Yeah, this class was hard. But, no, it was not impossible. I ended up with an A and I worked my butt off. Last time I checked, though, I wasn't in school to slide through with easy A's. If you want to learn something take this class. Go to class, turn in your papers, and grow up.

Awesome prof!As long as you show up and do the papers you will be fine.It does take some effort, but it is college so that is to be expected. As for the people who said he docks you for disagreeing, that is completely false.I got 5/5 or 5.5/5 on almost all of my papers and disagreed with him on most. As long as you present your side with facts.
I LOVED going to class, but it was the work I dreaded. Harvey is a really fun/funny teacher and is excellent at what he does. I learned a lot in this course, but began to lack interest since a lot of it focused on politics. We wrote 11 1-2 page papers, and then a Mid-Term and Final. I hated missing this course because it was hard to catch up.
The best professor I've had in college! Lecture are easily understandable and he has fun with them. He really knows his stuff when it comes to European history and it shows during lecture. Workload is about right he grades fairly. If you can type a paper that is concise, you will do great in this class
You will either like him or you won't.I find him annoying as hell. Dont take this class if you want a history class. It is a literature class the entire way through. His assessment is inane little papers where grammar is more important than content-good if you don't read. But his grades are consistent and he is a nice guy if you need to talk to him.
HORRIBLE! AVOID IF POSSIBLE! Doesn't teach anything relevant to assignments, not helpful! BORING!
FAILURE as a teacher, BORING, ANNOYING! Dumb, unrelated lectures. Can't believe that this was a required course. PAPERS SUCK AND NO HELP!
I really don't see why people don't like this class. He is very layed back and helps when ever you ask. There is NO tests! instead you write little one page responses to a short question for the quizzes and 3 pg responses for your tests. If you send him your rough draft of the 3 page response he gives you GREAT feedback and your grade will rise
Professor Harvey is an amazingly articulate professor. He explains everything you need to know for your assignments. The rest is up to you to apply the knowledge you have learned. 10 one-page responses (of which you only have to do 8) and a few three-page reviews. This class is insanely easy. Just follow directions, go to class, and pay attention.
OK class
Extrememly intelligent professor. I can't understand why anyone wouldn't like him! I learn so much every day. I think the only reason someone would have to complain about his class is that they are just looking for an easy A class and they don't really care about learning anything.
Prof Harvey is extremly rude and stand offish. He is highly knowledgeable but i wouldn't take a class with him again. He also has a TA grade everything you write before he even looks at it.
He is AWSOME
Fun professor! Grades fair and knows so much about European history! I took two classes with him and enjoyed them both. The only thing is you HAVE to expect to do a lot of reading! If reading a lot of material isn't your thing, than don't take his class. The majority of the material though is quite interesting. A+ professor
He is an ok teacher but AWFUL when it comes to helping the students. I had to miss classes because my grandfather was dying of cancer and I needed to help take care of him, and then missed to attend his funeral, and Mr. Harvey was not only NOT helpful he was almost mean about it, and did not let me make things up, due to his weird attendance policy
Harvey is an awesome teacher, his teaching style is great, he gives you a lot of notes, but explains them thoroughly. Always helps you to understand the conent of the course. Show up to class and you will do fine. There are 8 three to four page papers and a few short one page weekly papers. Great guy and great prof.
Poor professor. He is stand-offish and can be rude. He explains things terriably. He doesn't care if students understand the material. He also does not grade fairly, you have to agree with him. All assignments are essay and you never know what he wants and he doesn't care.
Thinks hes funny but hes not
He isnt reasonable whatsoever. He thinks hes funny just like someone else said above. If you miss his class he thinks very low of you. No extra credit opportunities and just is NOT fair in his grading. A+ prick
This class (Holocaust) affected me more than any other class EVER. I'll never forget the things I learned there. It can be incredibly depressing at times. One pg papers due most weeks, 5 pg paper due at the end. No tests. I thought he was funny, but also very serious and intense at times. Overall great guy, I'm taking him again next semester.
good prof. keeps class lectures entertaining. all you do is write papers, no tests. best history class i have ever taken
I didn't like this proff. But here are my biggest complaints: for a 200 level course I had to work way to hard for an A-. The notes he has you take are far to much and between writing them down and listening to him its horrible. I had to record his lectures or take a hit on my grade. Your required to cite his lectures. Way to much writing.
He's a jerk, but a very intelligent jerk. Don't expect to come up with something he hasn't seen before, you aren't making any great historical claims with your one page weekly paper. Follow instructions, commit to writing a coherent analytical essay, and you will be fine. Be ready to read, for once.
Dr. Harvey is a very intelligent professor. He knows his subject very well. Be prepared for a lot of reading. He is a harsh grader, so make sure your papers are concise and make sense. His grading seems to be a bit inconsistent. I had difficulty in this class, but that was more because of my intelligence level when it comes to history.
Very good teacher. Challenges students very well. I learned a ton. As long as you attend class, take good notes (use your laptop for notes), and do some of the reading you will get an A. 4 Papers the whole semester. Work hard on the essays for 2 nights and you'll be fine.
Textbook and reading heavy (as can expected for a history course). Lots of note taking. Incredibly knowledgeable about history and surprisingly non-partisan. Does not introduce his own modern political beliefs into class (can't say the same for other profs at SCSU). Papers are easy as long as you have knowledge about basic historical concepts.
A few one page papers and three 3-4 page papers. the final is one of those 3-4 page papers. papers are easy, he gives crystal clear directions. he is very smart and approachable, nice guy. no other assignments,he has nothing on d2l but articles to read.
Expect to write a lot! There are about five short 1-2 page papers and four to five longer 3-4 page papers. That's it though, nothing else. As long as you stick to his writing criteria and fully answer the question you'll do fine! Lectures are detailed and he make class slightly entertaining. Would 100% recommend him for any class.
His due dates with papers were very inconsistent. For example, he would give us a midterm two weeks before it was due & say that we had two weeks to work on it when in reality he wouldn't lecture on the topic until maybe one or two class periods before the due date. He's an overall ok professor I feel he just doesn't understand students well.
Really likes to let you know how bad your writing skills are. Is quite flip floppy when it comes to grammar. He will scrutinize a writing style in one assignment while dismissing it in another. Never really know what he exactly wants in the papers. The good thing about him is he is knowledgeable and will review your papers if you ask.
Professor Harvey is one of my favorite professors, however you need to be prepared to do a lot of reading to pass, as with any other history class. He is not too tough of a grader as long as you follow his outline, actually do the readings, and spend enough time on the essays. No in-class tests, only take-home essays. Would definitely recommend.
Doesn't relate well to students. Makes it harder than it needs to be. I would never take a class with him again.
Thick notes, hard to keep up or rewrite to your own words. Tests and worksheets require google to prepare for. Hard to learn from textbook and notes.
We got the same writing assignment every single week. If you didnt type up the assignment (even though its not required) it will hurt your grade. Also he changed the syllabus and added a paper in the middle of the class. We were given only a week to write it which is not enough time to prepare. He is an inconsistent grader. Would not recommend.
Professor Harvey is a great prof. People are complaining theres a lot of reading/writing ITS A HISTORY CLASS. Of course theres going to be lots of it! Also, he grades tough because you are in COLLEGE and should know how to write a decent paper by now. Yes, lots of reading and writing but he is helpful and he does care about his students.
One of the best lecturers at St. Cloud State University but kind of goofy in a nice way. A lot of reading and writing in this course but nothing too much. One of the "heavier" 400-level history course workloads at St. Cloud State University but still nothing too much and the professor is not a tough grader. I would recommend taking his classes.
He's a nice guy but a bad professor with vague instructions. I asked for clarification of something on the syllabus and the answer he gave me set me back the rest of the semester because it was so misleading. Pretends to be a grammar hawk but doesn't know anything about grammar and has inconsistent expectations. Also needs to brush up on history.
Best history class and professor I have had at SCSU. He is very knowledgably and was able to lecture off the top of his head for nearly the entire 3hr class and it never got boring. I thought I knew a lot about the subject before but he was able to show us the whole other side to WWII. I would highly recommend.
He has been the worst professor I have ever had. He will not tell you your exact grade and does not work well with others if they have a conflict with the schedule. He does not follow the planned schedule very well. I would recommend to take this class with a different professor or choose a different class.
Very disorganized. He could go a week or more without posting something, then hit us with a post detailing how we need to turn in a 3-4 page paper and have a discussion post up within a week. Doesn't tell you your grade and doesn't post scores. He's also a grammar nazi, but everything he writes is so grammatically incorrect it hurts.
Really knowledgeable professor. I have had him for a lecture course and an online course and the workload is relatively similar. There were no exams or quizzes, just papers or shorter discussion posts that needed to be submitted. Good grammar and writing are essential.
Dr. Harvey is very knowledgable when in person, but his online class lags. He doesn't spend much time teaching the student, he relies on the student to teach themselves which can be difficult. When COVID-19 hit he really took a backseat to the class and didn't make much contact with everyone. He also doesn't give much pos. feedback, mostly neg.
This is for History of Horror. You'll do 5 papers throughout the semester (1 every 3 weeks) and a presentation on one of the books in the course. There is a lot of reading and Harvey is a tough grader, but his lectures are nice to listen to and if you have problems he is more than willing to help you through things.
Professor Harvey was a very good professor, although he had some trouble with zoom calls. His lectures were very informative and his rubrics and what he wants us to write about is very open ended so you can use your brain and opinion to write about it. There is no wrong opinion in this class when writing an essay. The whole class is essays.
PSEO Spring 2021-HIST111 and 110 with Harvey. I am a straight-A student, his harsh grading ended up giving me a C and a B respectively. He grades on 4/5 papers, plus a midterm+final, and expects 400 level writing. The WORST prof I've ever had by far. Lecture quality goes up/down based on his level of interest in the subject. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS.
Won't take him ever again. Expects everyone to accommodate him but won't accommodate other people. Chaotic due dates, confusing online presence, and often forgot we even had homework to turn in.
Harvey is good I have one complaint I had a family emergency I had to drive 3 hours home but he denied my request to have an extension on the paper that was due that day. I know professors have the right to deny that but I explained my situation in more detail than I needed to. it was a very stressful event for me and he didn't make it easier
If you like history you'll enjoy Harvey's classes. He has a passion for the subject and his lectures, while imperative to the class, are also entertaining, though he does have a tendency to make a lot of references you won't understand if you aren't familiar with the sports or shows he likes. Papers are frequent but not hard, and he grades fairly.
Dr. Harvey is a very interesting and knowledgeable professor that seems to keep students interested through humor and interesting facts. For Hist 111, he is more graceful than I have heard on grading papers, but still tough. He is a teacher I aspire to be.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. if you like reading and have the time, go for it. But for other people who have jobs and an actual life besides education, don't bother. SOOOO much reading, he expects you to read so much from random scanned textbooks with missing pages. His class is a full-time job. His feedback on essays is written gibberish.
Apparently, using outside sources besides the ones he assigns is a NO NO on essays. His instructions are unclear and he scans in some assigned readings sideway w/ no way to flip them. Doesn't post grades, writes in illegible cursive as feedback, and posts assignments in announcements. its hard to find assignments. There are better profs out there!!
Does not seem to understand that people are taking more classes outside of this one. There is always some sort of reading going on. If you take this class please be aware that there is way to much work. Claims to be a grammar nazi but does not understand basic grammar.
Very reading heavy about 60 pages a week, 75% of your grade is the 5 papers and 25% is the final. Very tough grader, you need to use complete sentences and his syllabus states that if you "If you are not comfortable in writing clear English, this is not a course for you.." Take this warning how you will.
Out of 10 at the start of the class, it's down to 5. After working on our thesis for half a semester, he comes in & is making life a living hell if you don't change your topic to one that he likes/finds interesting. Is very condescending and arrogant, does not understand concepts beyond war. Would drop if not required.
If you aren't good at writing papers, you better figure something out before taking this class. He makes his expectations clear, but you will not do well otherwise. The whole grade was based on papers. His lectures were *extremely* difficult to understand due to his unclear sentences. Overall, he was good, but definitely some shortfalls.
Dr. Harvey is brilliant. However, since taking over the thesis classes for the history degree, the program has been marred with inconsistent expectations, poorly designed courses, and general misery. Like "10/13 students dropping the capstone required class" misery. If you plan to pursue a history degree, consider attending a different university.
Don't get me wrong, it can be difficult at times. But you are able to tell that he truly loves history. I struggled at first because he didn't like how I wrote, but as soon as I changed it a bit, I was getting As, and it was honestly fun. I was able to learn a lot from him that I wouldn't have been able to if I hadn't taken the class.
Worst class I have taken at St. Cloud State. I am going to start with the good things first. He does provide decent feedback on the papers and gets them graded within a week. There are 8 papers in this class; you must be a good writer. Expect 50-70 pages of reading a week. He has had us write a paper in 3 days. Always late posting the prompt.
