I took Chem 1152 over the summer- this is a nursing specific chemistry class that combines organic chemistry and biological chemistry. I come into this class with a 4.0 and I'm barely making a B. Its stupid hard, especially for a summer course, if your dedicated its doable but be ready to memorize the textbook.
Hardest class of the prerequisites. The material is tough and there is a lot of it! Reading quizzes daily, 3 tests, drops lowest, and a final. Exams are MC and short answer and are laid out just like his practice exams. He curves anywhere from 5to 15 points each exam which can save you! He gives you everything you need to pass. Practice!
Took Organic Chem for the summer. Haseltine is very intelligent & teaches you to think critically. I had to fully dedicate myself and only earned a B. Haseltine has a different way of calculating grades. He scales grades based on the class average. If it weren't for that I probably would have failed even with 30+ hours of studying in the library.
Hardest class I have ever taken. You need the book! He had chapter quizzes, and he cares about the side stories in the book. His tests are half multiple choice and the other half is short answers or drawings. This class took most of my summer. You have to read, practice, repeat. Do the practice problems and exams. Ask him questions to clarify.
He really is great! This is a really hard class and it requires a lot of studying. He has 11 or so quizzes and are not bad at all if you read the chapters. He is a very funny, quirky, interesting guy. I love his lectures.
Haseltine knows his stuff. but be sure you're reading the chapters ahead of time, in depth, or else you'll be beyond confused during class. Exam averages are usually low but he understands it's a difficult course and very difficult exams and he curves accordingly. He's nice, funny, and will help you if you just ask.
He is somewhat difficult, but if you study properly you will feel ready for exams. For CHEM3361 (aka organic chem 1), the class had 11 quizzes, 3 hourly exams, and a final. He drops your lowest quiz and lowest hourly exam! He also curves. In one exam, I made a 67 and it turned into a B. He answers questions over email very clearly and promptly.
By far my least favorite professor. His lectures don't help since he teaches like you should already know what he's talking about. That being said, he curves heavily! Took in the summer and there's a quiz everyday over 1 chapter of the textbook. He drops the lowest quiz and test. He curves the final too. Would take with someone else though.
Best teacher for Organic Chemistry. This professor is the only one to takae for this class. I got an A after having to drop it with another professor. I highly recommend him for all of your chem classes. A real gem!
Professor Haseltine is a goos professor, but the quizzes don't get back to you in time, the tests are hard and I'm basically teaching myself by reading the book. The good news is he curves the test, so it will definitely bump your grade up.
If you struggle w/chemistry take ANY other professor. He talked about space for the first 3 lectures & now we're behind on material making weekly quizzes and exams falling on the most inconvenient days ever (quizzes day after/before exam, exam Monday after a break, and a quiz 1 day before finals start) *He curves test grades hard bc high failure :)
Really a fantastic professor that cares about his students. He will help you get through a difficult subject. Highly recommmend him.
Dr. Haseltine is an amazing professor! He understands our position (we're not Chem majors) so he sticks to what we have to know. Quizzes every week, so be ready to read each chapter assigned, do not procrastinate! He hates the book but it's part of the curriculum. His grading is unique, but if you go to class and ask questions you will pass.
This class is unavoidably difficult, but if you're going to take it, take it with Haseltine! He's very eccentric in his teaching and gives lots of quizzes, but he also gives you lots of resources to study from, including old exams and quizzes. He's very helpful outside of class too. Also, attendance isn't mandatory, but you really need to show up
Don't take if chem is already NOT your strong suit. We ended up way behind in lab because of his off tangent conversations. Did change the course so there were only 3 tests and a final. Those are the only grades. Drops lowest and replaces with whatever the final test grade is. He's a cool dude, funny, but just be aware that you have to work for it.
while he is all over the place with his lecture, expect MAJOR curves on the test. tests were short and the practice tests he posts are identical to the real test. i would get a 55 on the test and he would curve it all the way to a C! he's very friendly but teaches the material as if you already know it. other then that i definitely recommend him.
Sometimes he would get a little off topic, but overall his lectures were very good. I learned so much in this class and I enjoyed it. He curves very heavily and is very fair with his curves. Super sweet guy and was always talking about how much he cared about us. Will make you laugh every class while also teaching you all about Ochem!
Do NOT take his class, and if you do you please buy the textbook. His tests are nothing like the material we learn in class, I scored higher on my tests when I stayed home and went over chapters on my own. He's hilarious and makes you laugh, but that doesn't take away from the fact that he's a terrible teacher. He goes on long off topic rants also.
He really embodies what a professor should be; lectures were always very intriguing, gives you plenty of practice problems and old test to review with, and is always there if you have questions regarding material. You will take away so much more than just class credit from this class if you go in with an open mind. Learn the material ahead of time
just don't take him. you'll literally be teaching yourself the whole semester. 3 test, 1 final, lowest test dropped. nothing else to help your grade out (no hw, no quizzes). he does curve the tests though. sloppy lectures, goes off topic, literally so hard to focus the way he teaches. take anyone else.
You will be shooting yourself in the foot if you dont take this professor for organic chem. He is by far the most generous grader. If you read the book and use the many resources he provides, theres literally no excuse to fail. Who cares if you need to teach yourself some of the material? Isnt that the way it usually goes for a science major??
Haseltine is a funny personality, but what was more funny- his teaching style. The 1st class day, he strolls in w/ 2 whiteboards for a major lecture class. The next 3 months, I realized why show up to class. He waste time during lecture and spends last 10 min. going over life quotes. Take only if last option. He curves to compensate for teaching.
I took this online but hes a terrible teacher. He gets sidetracked with rants easily during lecture. He curves the tests a lot so a 50 on the test can mean a C. You can pass his class easily but an A takes a lot of effort on your part. His notes are not helpful. The chemistry sets you have to purchase are not helpful. You are only graded on tests.
Professor Haseltines exams are though for Org Chem but does compensate by curving heavily. If you miss class you wont pass. Take advantage of the tools he provides. Those are lifesavers. Attend the Si classes for extra help. Pay attention and dont give up!
If you only need to take Organic Chem 1, or if you know for a fact that he'll teach Organic Chem 2 as well, take him. He curves so hard that you'll likely get a good grade, but you likely won't be prepared for Ochem 2 if he's not the one teaching it.
His class was literally only 3 exams and a final with the lowest test grade dropped. He curves like crazy: to put in perspective on my exams I got a 76, 65, 65, 86 (on final) and I got an A in the class. Read the textbook and attend SI. I learned a lot in this class but not really from him
Terrible if you're looking for an instructor who can actually convey information in a way that makes sense. On top of that, he's rude. Students raise valid issues, and his response is always a long, cantankerous lecture about accommodating his inflexibility--like fixing "your server" to receive his exams via email on time. YT: ORGANIC CHEM TUTOR!
Unless you want to teach Ochem to yourself, don't take him. He talked about everything except Ochem. I know more about his personal life than I do about the content. You're graded based on 4 tests, and he drops the lowest one. Each one is on a curve because of how bad everyone does. Read the textbook, and do the practice problems he suggests.
It's ironic that I chose "tough grader" and ironic that he lectures students about "time mangagement" because he doesn't actually grade much at all within a reasonable amount of time. Classes ended last week and final grades are due in a few days, yet he hasn't graded our last 4 labs. Ineffective teacher and irresponsible; avoid.
I didnt love Haseltine. I took this class in the summer and this was very difficult and will probably have to retake it again in the fall. Holds office hours but only for 30 minutes so not much help. A lot of practice sheets but no explanations on the answers given.
He does not give out homework. You have 3 tests and a final. He drops the lowest exam. If you dont do well on the tests, theres nothing else that can help your grade. Sure he curves, but theyre not helpful if your grade on the test is still so low and you dont understand. Dont take this class w/any other science. You will be burnt out.
Don't get me wrong. He is a nice man but nice men don't always amount to good teachers. Your grade is based off of 3 test and a final. THAT'S ALL. your lowest test grade is dropped and he does curve but when you get 35s on test the curve doesn't help. He has no SI. No homework. No extra credit. No powerpoint slides just old test with answers
His lectures are all over the place and extremely hard to follow. He teaches off of two white boards and nothing else. You probably wont learn much unless you teach the whole course to yourself. The curves on the test help enough that you can probably pass, but Id recommend taking someone else if possible.
Anyone who criticizes Haseltine has zero studying skills. People who continuously fail his tests do not go to his office hours, study sessions, class, or do any of the worksheets; he provides SO many resources for student success. This is ochem, it's gonna be hard. Only take Haseltine if you know how to study, but I promise if you try you'll pass.
Online Weird grade scale. A 75 was an A, a 60 a B. Tests were mostly multiple choice with some problems at the end. He posts previous exams online, and they are like the same questions, just changed slightly, but if you don't know the material, it won't help. I only went to one lecture, and the only reason I didn't make an A was Covid depression.
Nice professor with decent lectures (he does not move fast!). 3 exams 1 final and you can drop your lowest exam. Insane curve that really helps everyone at least pass the class. No homework or quizzes so you have to be motivated to study and/or attend SI sessions. Orgo not fun but if you want to at least pass the class Haseltine is the way to go!
Dont know why he doesn't have higher ratings! If you don't mind teaching yourself ochem and want an Easy A- take him! No HW, No Quizzes. 3 Exams Drops 1 and a final- curves like crazy depending on class performance, An 80 is a A in the class for us! Practice exams just like the real exams. Would take for ochem2 if he taught it.
Not the best at teaching so you will have to learn on your own- but easy grader. Post practice pages and practice exams that are exactly like the actual exams so you-ll know what to study. Curves final grades so its easy to get an A/B in his class. Really funny and outgoing !
He really knows what he's talking about but can not teach it. Lectures are all over the place and the online material is unhelpful. I feel as if I may pass this class without actually knowing much about O Chem due to the massive curves. Nice guy tho and he's funny so I'm not mad at him, just disappointed with the class and lectures.
Dr. Haseltine is nice but the way he lectures, in my opinion, sets students up for failure. I basically taught myself everything and stopped going to class after the first exam because I got nothing from his lectures. Only got an A because he curves the tests/final really heavy. Grade is based off 3 tests and a final exam. Try to avoid if you can!!
This class is an easy A/B - but only because he curves test grades up two letter grades. You WILL NOT be prepared for Ochem 2. Many people that take Ochem 1 with Haseltine barely pass Ochem 2 with the other professors because they have to play 'catch up'.
Can be difficult if you don't practice. Its very tedious work and a lot of memorization. you need to study everyday so you're not behind. He gives practice problems and old exams so you know what to study. He gives really good curves for test! no homework/extra credit/quizzes to fall back on. you tend to zone out during lectures. GO TO TUTORING!
Read the textbook before lecture, print off lecture notes before class, do the practice sheets posted, practice old exams. I would recommend studying at least 3-4 hours for 5 days minimum before each test. (it may be less if you actively study throughout) Haseltine is not a bad professor, but you will have to put in work.
Horrible Professor. DO NOT TAKE. He doesn't teach you. You have to do a ridiculous amount of homework. Its crazy. Youll watch more youtube than listen to him
Doesn't go off PowerPoints but very vague notes. The last chapters are his hand written notes. Test are extremely difficult but he does curve.
Absolutely Awful! DO NOT TAKE him. No one understands what he is teaching. You will watch more youtube videos than listening to him. His tests are ridiculously hard and he grades on a small curve but not enough to matter. Just don"t take him under any circumstance
The lectures were boring and quite confusing. If you don't show up to class you won't pass. The grades consisted of only 3 tests and the final, lowest was dropped. Didn't understand most of his lectures and the tests were even worse.
I understand the bad reviews, but the class is Organic Chemistry, it's not an easy A. Dr. Haseltine is kind of eccentric, but it's because he seems to really love chemistry. Going to the SI sessions helped a lot and the tests were similar to previous years' tests which he gives you to study so his class really isn't as bad as everyone's making it.
Do not take this professor under any circumstance!!!! Only 4 grades are given which are three tests and a final. His lectures do not make sense and the tests are extremely hard and detailed. He had to lower the grade scale so much that a 65-100 is an A which should tell you all you need to know. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!
Yeah, no. Please DO NOT take him if you want to enter 3362 with any idea of what is going on. He tried a new homework "log" system that didn't and still doesn't make sense. He doesn't know how to communicate with us as students about his expectations. Only bright side, as others said, is the insane curve. That might be the only thing saving me.
This class is difficult! The only thing weighing your grade is 3 exams (one can be dropped) and the final exam. The lectures can get very confusing. It is not easy to get an A or B in this course. The curve for the exam is crazy. For example I got a 55 (B), 54 (C) and 69 (final exam) and ended with a B in the class. Get ready to study and practice.
Curves like CRAZY and drops lowest test grade for perspective I scored a 69, 40, 72, and 48 on the final, and got an A in the course. This semester he tried hw logs for credit + extra credit and never had a clear rubric for it, which was super confusing. You'll learn but probably more from the book and youtube. I recommended ochemtutor/chad's prep!
While Haseltine is knowledgeable and can make some good points, his lectures are pretty bad. Nothing is really learned from them and he ends up going on tangents. He also lectures like everyone already knows the same amount as he does. While his tests are decent, his saving grace are the curves on his test. They are insane.
he has three tests (the lowest grade is dropped) and a final. the curves are about 20 points but his tests are superrrr difficult with multiple choice and short answer questions. He will also ask random questions about the text book which is the main thing it's used for and go on random tangents. please take someone else if you have the option to.
I would it take him again he gives no homework or extra credit.Your entire grade is based on 3 test and a final lowest test dropped. You basically have to do perfect on the test to pass. He also does a weird grading scale where he curves the exam but it doesn't help much because it gives him room to do whatever he wants with your grade.
ABORT AT ALL COSTS!!!! 4 exams one is dropped and thats your entire grade. It's really hard to tell what your grade is because of his grading scale. Doesn't tell you what to study just says study it all. Answers questions with another question. Provides old exams, notes, and practices problems but makes tests 5x harder so that you wont pass.
AVOID ! AVOID ! AVOID! He is the most horrible professor EVER. I stressed my butt off in this class only to receive his horrible attitude , low grade and horrible exams. Be sure to read the Timberlake book even if he advise you not to. The exam has questions over Timberlake every single time. This class takes up a lot of time so be ready to study
He's very sweet and smart, but for both ochem 1 and 2 be prepared to read the textbook and be your own ochem prof. He does not explain material for your level. The only saving grace for him is the curve. For our ochem 2 class a C was a 33. 3 exams and a final, final replaces lowest grade. Expect 30 hours of studying for an exam for a good grade.
I don't understand all the negative reviews. Haseltine is not a bad prof, but know grade is based off of 3 exams (1 gets dropped) and the final. No graded HW or quizzes. Read the textbook and work all the problems like he says and you will be ok. Gives a huge curve, so an A or B is attainable if you put in some effort. Nice guy, very knowledgeable.
He is a great person but flies by his lectures and almost feels like he's teaching graduate students. really great curves which is why I took him but even then the exams were very hard. Do really great on the first exam because that's the easiest exam. Practice past exams and understand too. good luck !
You literally only get graded on 4 tests (one being the final). His tests are half multiple choice half writing. A week into the course over 3/4ths of the students had dropped the class. \There is no online powerpoints to refer to if you did have to miss a class, it's literally what he makes up in his head per day. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!
Grades only 4 exams, but drops the lowest. Get ready to really teach yourself.. He flies through lectures and lecture notes he writes on the board are disorganized. If colored notes/lessons help you learn, then you're also out of luck. Doesn't upload PPT lessons in d21. The only thing nice about his class is his generous grading scale.
You have to teach yourself for most of it. However, he does provide a little bit of extra credit but it isn't a lot.
He won't grade labs until the end of the semester BUT he grades for completion. The final exam(s) are what make or break most of your grade, offset by the high lab grades though, a B is likely. I really got along with Dr Haseltine, he's clearly very knowledgeable and cares about his students even if his outward affect would tell you he doesn't.
I wouldn't suggest this man to my worst enemy! You get 4 exams no homework, no practice quizzes, and MAYBE 2 points of useless extra credit. If you are a nursing major take another professor, if none are available...save yourself and your grade and wait! He's no help whatsoever. Test are extremely hard he has to curve his grading scale to 75=A 60=B
3 grades total, all test, drops an exam. Curves a letter grade. Do the practice exams!!!! Homework problems very helpful. Does in-class practice problems. Give random bonus points for attendance, max 12 points. He is hard to follow along because the class is hard to follow. If you put in the work outside of class, in class becomes easier.
He's so bad i would advice you not to take OCHEM from him. you could try and ask him questions and he goes around the answer . do not take him .
Dr. Haseltine is an awesome organic chemistry professor. I took him for both 3361 and 3362 and i excelled in both classes. I do understand the negative feedbacks but you have look beyond that, persevere and work hard to earn a good grade. You start to enjoy his class if you learn to adapt to his teaching style. I do recommend Dr. Haseltine.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. Even if it delays your graduation take another professor. 4 Exams but drops your lowest one, so he grades 3 exams really. Exams are very hard and he isn't helpful at all. If you ask him a question he will tell you read the book. Very poor teaching style.
Very dissatisfied with the outcome of this class. His lectures are all over the place and I recommend taking another professor even if it delays your graduation. Your grade depends on 3 tests...thats it. Yes OCHEM is a hard subject but his teaching style is lazy so be prepared to read the textbook from beginning to end. Nonetheless, goodluck!
Don't waste ur time or money with this professor. Not clear on lectures rushes 3 chapters in 30 minutes due to talking to much about random lab experiments. His teaching style will not help and orgo is a difficult class. There is a reason why he usually has 70 seats left in registration 2 weeks before classes start!
There's a reason why he is the only professor with spots available!! The entire class depends on only 3 exams and there are weekly quizzes that are almost impossible to pass. He teaches 100 students on a white board at the very front of an auditorium and goes off on unrelated tangents. Do not waste your time taking this professor!!
DO NOT TAKE. He gives weekly quizzes that you have 10 minutes to take, and they are worded so poorly. He barely teaches what we are supposed to know, so you have to read the textbook on your own for the exams.
One of the worst professors I've ever taken my whole collegiate career! Your grade is based on 3 exams and 10 quizzes which all are worded so very weirdly vs what he tells you to study. People say that the curve might help but its enough people who makes 50-60s to where he keeps the regular grading scale so don't rely on that. Overall just avoid!
Solid A student here (was one of his best student, he knows me). Took Org 3361 and 3362 with him. I did not like his teaching style, but I did enjoy his exams. Exams and quizzes are actually pretty easy and fun if only you studied. I have seen so many people who did not even spent 2-3 hours on Org chem per day and blame Prof. Haseltine.
He's actually a great professor, has multiple resources and is very honest about grading and material. The only way u fail is if u don't put forward the effort. It's a lot of work so make time for it!! Took him for Orgo 1. Took someone else for Orgo 2 failed and went back to him and passed. The textbook is your best friend. :)
Not a good professor & has a very nice-nasty demeanor, he comes in doesn't teach only does practice problems. He talked about having to take the class twice a lot when he was an undergrad so I think he wants everyone to do the same. Respectfully, save yourself the stress unless you're a person who's good at teaching themselves.
He was bad at teaching and the way he answered questions made students not want to answer. I really wanted to like him as i felt we shared a similar passion for science but, his teaching style is so bad that I basically taught myself.
Nice person but not a great teacher. Never uses projectors and writes everything on marker boards. Does little to fully explain concept and usually says "or so they say" or "if that's what you want to believe" when answering questions. Only take if it's absolutely necessary!
class was extremely difficult for no reason... i've always been a passing student in chem but this professor makes the subject unbearable and hard to understand... very weird grading scale, essentially writes and teaches on the whiteboards super quickly, no hw or quizzes, essentially teach yourself. 70 seats open only 28 enrolled... th
3 tests only, Doesn't teach, just does practice problems and doesnt explain clearly. Without reading the textbook front to back, id drop out. Even then, the textbook doesn't truly prepare you for the harshness of his test questions. Has practice problems, old exams and quizzes as resources.
He is awful. Talks so fast, does a poor job at explaining, and answers questions very condescendingly. He is retiring, but if you have him next semester, I would genuinely drop the class and take someone else in the fall. It's not worth the risk. I had a major family emergency, and he prevented me from retaking a quiz. Just stay away.
We had only 3 exams to go off of. I feel like from the beginning of the semester the odds were against me. I have to retake this course, but I know that I'll get it next time for sure. I'm not understanding why they still allow this man to teach. He is retiring next semester, so thankfully future students won't have to struggle how I did.
I try not to get my personal feelings involved but having us rely on 3 exams it's so evil. We don't have any room for error and if you're struggling it'll be hard to bring the grade up.
no powerpoints, no quizzes, only 9 bonus points randomly through the semester. I managed to get a B but I had to put in so much work for the class. he's a nice guy, but his teaching methods are not good. if your not good at reading the text book, you won't do good in his class. helpful in office hours though
Read your textbook, do ALL the practice problems and you'll do fine! I cannot emphasize how much you need to read your textbook!
Wasn't helpful in office hours, a horrible professor. Grades very harsh. We had only 3 exams. With a few bonus points given. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. WORST OCHEM PROFESSOR AT KSU. Please remove this guy. QUICK AND FAST!!!!!!!!!!!
I really could not recommend Haseltine any LESS. He is NOT a good professor. Barely any grades in order to help with such a difficult class. He does not prepare you for exams well at all. Quizzes have nothing to do with exams. He even refused in class when a peer asked for him to draw specific arrows to understand mechanisms. Do NOT take.
Amazing, sweet, kind professor. Don't skip lectures, he makes you think so that you can on the test! Drops lowest test and quiz, so each test is 25%; final is 25%; quiz avg is 25%. A = 83% ish. He appreciates participation in class and offers extra credit for it (and attendance). Old tests and quizzes are on D2L. MUST READ KLEIN FULLY!!!
I don't recommend. Avoid at all costs
