He's a little too serious. HARD TESTS! Has confusing test questions!
Hatle is a good teacher, he knows his stuff and will teach it but he claims that he does not test on information not covered in class however this is not true. Warning: read the chapers- very nessessary. His tests can be confusing. Test Average 65%
Hatle's really nice, but his tests are pretty hard. It really helps to take good notes in lecture, even though he puts the slides up on blackboard.
Tests do not reflect the lecture material or the text book. Very hard to understand and hard to study for the exams.
Dr. Hatle is not a good teacher. He teaches his prereq course as a masters program. Most of his students will not get into their desired program now because of his class. He is a nice guy but can't teach. His teach questions can be found on he MCAT!
I like him a lot. Just take good notes and you will do fine. I made a B in his class and all I would do was review the Blackboard slides and notes.
I agree with the person who said read the chapters. He does claim only to test on material in class but this is not true. Study hard. He has 1000 diagrams and will put one on the test...good luck guessing which one. However he is helpful.
Hatle is a very organzied and well structured professor. His exams are difficult if you don't study! I suggest understanding the material vs. memorization. He's a physiologist not an expert in anatomy;so be warned, he doesn't know his anatomy.Learned alot
Organized lectures. Dull at times, but clear. Helpful with questions. Tests from notes, but this is a hard class and it's too much material to learn it all from notes. Test questions are similar to review at end of chapters, so read the book and do review questions for real understanding.
I really really enjoyed his class. You DO have to work, but when you grasp it and his teaching method it's a cake walk. I took him twice, so it can't be that bad!
Extremely good lecturer! Hard class, but you actually learn instead of just memorization. People only say bad things because you have to study! I enjoyed most lectures
I had Hatle for a/p 1&2. What a huge difference a/p 2 is. He still lectures the same, but his tests are so much harder. I read the chapters and found them to be no help, as well as the lecture notes. I'm not sure how I did as well as I did, but this class is definitely a tough class.
he's an okay teacher, although sometimes out of words. i took him last spring. study your notes and the review questions and you'll get a good grade.
This is a very challenging class. The tests are hard and you need to study but you learn alot. He is a great teacher though and explains concepts very well.

Dr. John is great and he is kinda cute....
he is really nice and helpful. hes test are kinda hard. he is always in his office if you need anything!
Dr. Hatle was an awesome teacher. He is always willing to help. his test are very challenging, just memorizing the notes will not be enough. critical thinking is needed for all test. It was very tough, but I enjoyed learning the material.
Excellent professor who really knows his stuff! Tests are difficult and on the tricky side, so don't even think about skipping class. He doesn't take attendance, but the test material comes directly from what he teaches in class and his PP's. Don't be intimidated: he is always willing to help or even explain concepts in different ways.
Do not take physiology with him. He is very unclear about what he wants from his students. But expects too much and grades way too harshly.
He is willing to do whatever he can to offer help, but his tests are EXTREMELY hard. Attendance is not mandatory, but it helps to go, because he gives pop quizzes that in the end can help your grade. The lab is easy, but this class is not memorization, you have to understand everything that is going on, and the final is cumulative.
Had him for Anatomy 2. Great teacher. Attend class and takes notes. Study your notes and the figures he puts on his powerpoints. Class is pretty easy. Way easier than Anatomy 1!!!!
Really good teacher as long as you want to take the time and come to class. His lecture notes are all you need. Had 5 tests (including final) and a weekly quiz. A lot of work but definitely much better than A&P 1.
A good professor. If you come to every class and take notes you will have NO problem. Makes everything clear and simple. Sometimes his test questions can be misleading, but he always makes up for it. Great professor, definetly take him, I learned a lot.
Had high expectations but a major let down. He has pop quizzes that aren't too bad, but his exams appear to be straight forward but you must understand the material to the most specific details. He is very unclear when students ask questions in class, his constant answer is "I'm not sure, I'll have to check on that." It was quite frustrating
Dr. Hatle is a good professor but the only thing is for a general class, he asks for too much. The one thing that really got me was that he would give a quiz that he himself didn't know what he was looking for. Also, for lab he will tell you to fix things on the first paper, but on the second paper We got a lower grade for following his comments.
Ok teacher but his tests are really tough. I never bought the textbook and I did finr in the class. Make sure you come to class for the quizzes they really boost your grade when you need it.
Hatle writes like he is in 10th grade and has the sense of humor and teaching skills of one too. His tests are ridiculously hard, and do NOT think you can just study the notest and get an A in the class. Total d-bag, do not take him if you can help it.
Great professor. Contrary to other posts, it is entirely possible to get an A with just class notes, provided that you take proper notes. This is an upper-level biology class for biology majors, it requires more than minimal effort to do well, and students who were unable to succeed in this class should get out of the field and find another major!
Hatle is very knowledgable however he was teaching this class and didn't know WHAT he knew about it. We would ask simple questions and he would not know the answer. The class itself was easy- tests are STRAIGHT from the notes he writes on the board!
He is one of the most helpful prof.s I have ever had. He helps those who ask for help, even if your not in his class. I enjoyed bio3 with him, he even helped me in ento. this fall(I took a different prof). His explanation of phylogeny prepared me for being published in a systematics journal.I owe him for unlocking my scientific (research)creativity
One thing I find different about the critiques is that they seem lazy. God forbid one goes to class or takes good notes. Also "I am not sure, let me look it up" is what an educated person says, especially if they are not just trying to look impressive to others (premeds). The final thing is "he is too hard", really, for gb3? Maybe science is hard!
Very helpful when you attend office hours. Does his best to make lectures interesting and tends to use real-world examples that are engaging. 4 tests and a final, test questions are meant to be challenging and require a full understanding of the material. Not an easy class, but if you put the time in, you'll do fine.
I really like Dr. Hatle. If you go to class, take the notes, and study them, you'll get a good grade and learn a lot in the process. He doesn't overcomplicate things, which is nice. He is extremely willing to help and discuss things in office hours. Tests are all multiple choice and one or two essay questions. He's not that bad :)
Decent professor. Some of his test questions are difficult, but they weren't impossible. Has group quizzes can help your grade. He is not the funniest professor, but he does display a sense of humor at times. You need to attend class to get all the information, because the book doesn't help all that much.
His test are more detailed then what he goes over in lecture. His lectures are all over the place, not organized.
I had him for GB3. Dr. Hatle's lectures are entertaining. He really tries to describe things in a way you will understand and references things in real life. There are group quizes which help your grade. Tests are not impossible, but you must know your stuff... multiple choice and an essay question or two.He is ALWAYS willing to help.
TAKE HIM FOR BIO3. Awesome professor, extremely nice. Take notes and study a lot and you will do fine. If you slack that is your own fault. Dr. Hatle is very helpful and will take the time to explain things so that you understand them. Best teacher i've had at UNF yet.
He's a really good teacher. Explain things very well and he is very very helpful. Lectures are very organized and, although it is no mandatory, it is crucial to get a good grade. he puts lots of notes on the blackboard and they will be on the tests. Tests are exactly about what he talked on class. I strongly recommend him...
He is a really nice guy who will work with you to make sure you understand the material, and give you current examples. With that said you need to memorize a lot. The essay questions on his exams are extremely hard if you do not know every single little step. If you go to his office after the test he will explain what he wanted. Good Luck!
Bio III was extremely easy. Its easy material and easy to understand, With Hatle make sure you know your phylogenetic trees!!! Tests arent bad if you pay close attention you will notice that he is pretty much lecturing straight from the lab manual Beall uses. You will do fine, take him.
Tough class, but if you go to class and study you'll be okay.
For Biology 3, Mr. Hatle provides you with the information needed, but it's up to you to study it. He makes it easy to understand and it's a lot of material, but you have to apply yourself in this course in order to get that A. He will test you a lot on phylogenetic trees. Optional attendance, but you will miss a lot if you skip. uses time wisely.
The material is easy but the expectations make it extremely difficult and it is a fight to make an A. Poems, essays, phylogenetic trees, and confusing multiple choice make tis class more complex than it needs to be.
Class is way too challenging. Too many phylogenetic trees, AVOID
Excellent teacher! very clear, explains well, always answers questions. Grades very strict on essays- does not like to give full credit (pretty much ever). Tests are straight from the lectures, so if you attend class and take notes you will do fine. I never even opened the book and got an A
He is a very good professor. It's a hard class, and requires a great amount of studying. But an A is attainable, if you put in the work. 3 exams and a final.
This wasn't an easy class but if you study and take notes you will be fine. There are 4 exams and a final. He is very helpful in his office hours and in class and is pretty straightforward about what the essay questions are about on his exams. Didn't really use the book at all.
This class was very hard but I was able to pass it with a very decent grade. In order to pass this class- take good notes and probably have a recorder so you can play his lectures again and again. Do not be afraid to ask him any question that you might have. He is one of the best Biology professors I ever had.
Class is very interesting. KNOW your phylogenetic tree well. He will look at your tree before a test and tell you what is wrong, which is very fair! Very tricky multiple choice meant to make you doubt yourself. Not the easiest class, but an A is very obtainable! Gave out a total of 5 extra points for exam total. Best Bio professor so far!
AWESOME professor! He is always willing to help you if you have questions. Lectures are very straight forward and organized IF you pay close attention. Exams require you to apply your knowledge rather than just identifying concepts.
I took this class because I was told it would be easy and it's only 2 credit hours, which was all I needed to fulfill my science requirement. Hatle is very disorganized with his lectures and often verbally cites Wikipedia. He starts to explain things then stops and mutters that it's too in depth for this course and moves on to something else. :/
Do not expect to pass this class using just his lecture notes. His lectures are very disorganized and his practice quizzes do not match his essay questions at all. Read the book and take very good notes from his lectures! This professor is NOT recommended for someone who's a visual learner, as his lectures are mostly auditory w/ almost no visuals!
Easy class. No textbook needed. Had a lot of high school topics and nothing was deep in depth scien
generally not bad but was very disorganized. you must pay attention during lectures. usually only 5 ppt slides and then he goes off on a tangent trying to explain just a picture. His lectures were based solely on what he wrote on the board and what you hear him say. 5 exams, no drops. I was supposed to get a B- but gave me a B. nice but hard.
Awesome professor! Attend every lecture, take notes on what he writes on the board and what he says, that's what his exams are on. Textbook is not necessary. He is very clear in lecture and typically offers a study session before exams. 5 exams of about 30 mc and an essay, be specific on essay for max points. Not an easy class, but doable w/ him.
Very Harsh grader! Nearly impossible to get an A
Hardest Class I have ever taken. Took bio freshmen year and passed that with a B+, Im struggling for a D in this class. HIs tests are insanely hard and his video projects are also harshly graded. Don't take him if you want a passing grade.
It is an anatomy course, it will be hard. Just put in the hours studying and you have nothing to worry about. The only thing holding me back from getting an A in there was the stupid mandatory video projects. This was extremely frustrating when I received As on 34 of the tests. Also, getting As on the video projects is unheard of.
the problem I had with this course this semester was the video projects..I would've gotten over a 100% in this class as the exams were extremely fair but his grading on the videos were as if you needed to be auditioning for a movie or something? This is anatomy class... not theatre production. but overall Hatle was awesome and would take him again.
The worst professor I've had. His lectures are long and confusing since he just talks off of a few slides of pictures. Group projects are the worst. You're stuck in group quizzes all semester, and basically study for the entire group if you're unlucky. His exams are horrible and he's a tough grader. Avoid if you could.
He doesn't use posted notes or powerpoints. His lectures are him lecturing and using the chalk board. He gives you the very basic info needed and expects you to go through the text and find the small details. Overall, he tells you what he wants. You need to work at it though. Won't give you the answer, he makes you find it out.
find a group of smart kids in your class and study ... that is the only way to pass. i have to retake the course . He puts power points up on blackboard that are so generic ... they do not help with these test he gives. Its all notes on the chalk board and every word he says... i would advise you to get the text book.. go to ace, etc.
I took him for Anatomy 2. He is very good at lecture but he posts the bare minimum on Blackboard so go to class and take good notes! His tests are challenging and includes a lot of figures but do-able. I also had him for lab, he is fair at grading quizes. The more you make an effort to reach out and get to know him, the more he will help you.
not my first choice of professor for sure. Very tough professor in lecture and lab. he will make you work for it big time. 4 exams no drops, 4 essay quizzes in class with 1 quiz drop. lab had 5-6 short quizzes, 2 lab practicals, & 2 lab reports. exams had lots of diagrams which were not easy, must go to lectures and take notes & record him.
I had him for AP2 & he isn't the greatest professor, but he isn't the worst either. He makes his own test questions and they can get confusing. Overall, much easier class than BIO2. Study phylogenetic trees and type your notes so you can get all the material he says; no power points. Easy quizzes w. difficult tests. Not the worst I've had. Clickers
What I liked best was that his exams came from his lectures directly. He also explained things very clearly. The only thing I didn't like was that he focused a lot on the writing workshop when there was so much time for learning actual Bio III material. We already learn how to write scientific papers in Bio I and Bio II. At least we're supposed to.
Power point lectures are very vague. There's one quiz, three exams, and two video projects. It is almost impossible to get full credit on the video assignments. Quiz and test questions are very difficult and go way more in depth than his lectures. SI sessions will become your best friend but those still don't do a lot.
For Anatomy and Physiology 2: He is a great teacher. Whatever he teaches in class is on the test, but you have to know everything inside and out. The book is not needed. I advise recording the lecture and then listening to it after class. There are many things he says that you won't pick up on the first time. Tests are challenging.
Anatomy 2 is a class you'll need to study and memorize for regardless of the prof. Hatle's exams are pretty straightforward and the essay portions are always explained prior to the exam so you aren't completely blindsided. He assigns 2 video projects and grades very strictly on those, so make sure you put a lot of effort into them. Go to class!!
Three tests worth 100 pts each, cumulative final worth 50 pts. One quiz. Two videos throughout the semester ( must be professional quality). NO TEXTBOOK - tests/quizzes are DIRECTLY from lecture. Tests are 70% multiple choice and 30% essay question (you are made aware of the essay's topic ahead of time).
Ik some people that did well in his class, but I had to withdraw from it. My grade was unsalvageable. Only things that make up your grade are exams (multiple choice & essay). His lectures are long and imperative for the test & I studied hard for them but never passed. If ur a hands on learner & need more than tests to make up ur grade dont take him
Dr. Hatle is decent professor and the class is pretty straightfoward. Your only grades in the lecture portion are tests. Tests are multiple choice/essay. He gives you the essay questions before the tests and will review your answer prior to the test (free points). Tests are based only off of what he says in class. Lab is tough so study.
Terrible teacher, but a decent human being. The class is very lecture heavy. There is no structure within the class. He pulls things out of no where, half the time he has no idea what he is saying, & he is wrong a lot. I passed Anatomy 1 with an A with no problems, but this class is challenging. Would have been better off taking this class at FSCJ
Hatle is a good professor and is very passionate about what he does. Recording lectures saved my life in this course because he says a lot of info in a short amount of time. He teaches science courses so of course they are going to be challenging, as long as you pay attention he is great. Super helpful in his office hours as well.
He is very passionate about his teachings yet he is very disorganized during lectures. He bases his exams off of everything that he says in class which makes it hard because u have to write down every word that he says. Exams are super hard because he forgets what he said during class so he mixes up questions. The more I studied, the worse I did.
Dr. Hatle is a good person; however, teaching may not be his strong suite. 2 out of 4 exams included an essay portion in which he gives you "possible" prompts. His lectures are strictly "chalk talk" and he consistently contradicted himself during lectures/on quizzes etc. Do not take him unless you absolutely have to.
Dr. Hatle is tough but he is not unreasonable. If you study what he writes down and SAYS especially and prepare for tests days in advance you will be fine. He gives you everything you need to succeed. You just have to do the rest. I recommend recording his lectures and making sure you can explain processes and you'll do great. No drop grades.
Hatle's intentions are on point, but quiz & exam questions are very poorly worded . It felt like rather than testing your knowledge, he was tricking you. Lectures (from which all tests are derived) are strictly chalk-board. You HAVE to go to class, record him, & know that 1-2 x/week, you'll have a clicker quiz. Textbook not required, but helps.
Dr. Hatle is very passionate about the subject matter. Biggest words of advice are to thoroughly read the primary papers discussed and record lectures. Go to class, write down everything on the board but add more to your notes from what he SAYS. He wants you to do well, so he gives you all the information but his tests are challenging. Super nice
Very passionate and willing to help you during his office hours if your confused on the concepts. The class is very hard, but all college science courses are supposed to be really hard. Understand the concepts, don't memorize, and record the lectures to get the details and you should be good.
Hatle is tough, but not unreasonable. You have to have a complete understanding on the subject to do well on his tests and quizzes. The questions are not simple, they include many different layers to truly test your knowledge. My biggest advice is to record his lectures (which he approves of) and add to your notes from that. Overall, I enjoyed him!
He is a very good professor and gives good lectures. Exams are hard but if you write down everything he puts on the board and record his lectures you will pas. Has essay questions on the exam but he gives you the questions a week in advance so just practice them. SI helps a lot so go to them. If you can get a group to study with I highly recommend
4 exams-2 cumulative, exams have essay portion, practice ex essay Q's are given, he expects essay responses to be very detailed. lecture heavy course make sure to record and to write whats on the board. Always available, recommend going to office and asking Q's it's worth the time. Online portion of course he had recorded lectures posted,GO TO SI !
At first i was terrified because he had a really bad review on here, but he is actually an excellent professor. You HAVE to study! You will not pass if you study the day before. Take really good notes. He is very straight to the point. Since his class is in the morning and some of us tend to space a lot i recommend audio recording his lectures.
Professor Hatle is the most knowledgeable professor. Senior-level Physiology is not a joke. It is one of the hardest classes that I have ever taken. The professor is great. The class content is lecture-heavy. You need to study every day and take notes because exams are based on how to apply knowledge in different topics.
Dr. Hatle seems like such a nice guy... but boy this class was a nightmare. The way it was ran was really counter-intuitive. Probably the most de-motivating and depressing class I have ever had to trudge through. There's no way I could fit all the problems into the character limit here. Hopefully he's better on-campus, but online it was really bad.
This is a senior level class and Hatle makes sure you know that at EVERY step !! Hatle is nice but the class is extremely difficult. If you are not willing to put in the work and study over time, this is not the class for you. You MUST watch the lectures and take notes !! Exams are very difficult, quizzes are tricky but doable. Put in the work !!!
A lot of people complain about Hatle but I thought that he was a great professor. As long as you ACTUALLY watch the lectures and take notes, you'll get a good grade. He can grade a little tough on specifics, but again as long as you watch the lectures you'll be fine.
Professor Hatle overall is a good professor and a good person in general. He is there to help you as long as you ask for it. He can be specific on what he wants for his test answers, but if you watch his lectures, you should do just fine. We didn't use the textbook, but it is a good extra resource. Would not take again because of the exams
Hatle is clear on what to expect from you. This course requires many hours of studying and integration of all the material. The essays can be hard regarding the time limit and he is extremely, extremely specific. Overall. RECORD the lectures. It will prove to be helpful to go back and listen and make sure you have everything he says in your notes.
Has written, multiple choice, and phylogenetic trees as separate items for one exam which is unlike any other GB3 professor's work. The exams are very picture based, you will be expected to know specific things about certain animals and that will be a large portion of the multiple choice exam. I have heard Smith may be a better choice 4 some
this is a hard subject to learn but he is very helpful. the hard part is just remembering all the materials and mechanisms on your own time. he teaches everything in lecture and is very accessible throughout the week for any questions. if youre unclear on something just ask he can def elaborate to make it easier and tells you what will be on exams
GBIII is hard. No matter who you take, this class will be challenging. However, Hatle is great! Course is made up of 4 exams and a final, with an online take-home quiz about every other week. Hatle releases possible essay questions he will use before each exam. He is friendly and knowledgeable, however, you will not do well if you miss class.
I dropped Hatle in because his exams did not correspond well with his lectures. I was very confused when I took my first exam because his wording and questions threw me off from what I studied.
Dr. Hatle is definitely one of the best professors I've had. He is super nice and you can tell he genuinely cares about his students and what he teaches. His tests can be difficult, but not impossible. He gives additional assignments to help boost your grade and they also assist in studying for exams.Being present for lecture is vital for success.
Professor Hatle did a good job at providing you with the material needed to do good on the exam. HOWEVER, he does what are called 'discussion panel days' where you will read a research paper related to the materials discussed in class. These research papers are worth 30 points on the exam. Thats where people start to struggle. You have to study.
Physiology is hard but Hatle is a great guy. I had surgery during the semester and he was super understanding and accessible outside of class. Feedback on quizzes/exams good. Textbook is lackluster. Exams are essay style and involve application/specific knowledge. You MUST study and will benefit from attending lecture, but it's not impossible.
I loved taking Bio 3 with Dr.Hatle! He is a tough teacher to take if you aren't attentive the entire time and you have to WANT to succeed. This means studying a good amount each week, visiting during office hours, and going to SI. But if you take every opportunity given to you, you will do just fine. He will even remember you after class is over!
My issue with Hatle is he didnt explain ap2 as well as my ap1 teacher, but overall his lectures did the job and his test were not terribly hard. you will have essay question on the test that he gives you in advance, and online quizzes every chapter. It is surface level material and not too difficult.
Dr. Hatle is knowledgeable when it comes to AP 2, he goes into depth on important topics that will most certainly be asked as a possible essay question on an exam. The exams are very doable in the multiple choice portion, but can be extremely difficult when it comes to the essay. The only grades in the class are exams and quizzes, and 1 assignment.
Professor Hatle's lectures are interactive, in that you often draw diagrams and write notes along with him. He explains all the concepts and anatomical features in a very comprehensible manner and is willing to break them down further if you are confused. Exams are fairly straightforward as long as you show up for the lectures and study!
He's a smart, kind, and helpful professor who explains processes clearly with great step-by-step notes. My only issue is his exams: the analysis questions allow too much room for misinterpretation. You can know the material well but still do poorly if you misinterpret the question, making it feel like you're tested on his wording, not the content.
Very knowledgeable and approachable professor who gives you all the necessary materials to succeed in class. Pretty difficult content. Attend lecture and study. Short-answer tests and cumulative final.
