This dude's new in the department, but he needs to prove alot to stay there.
He is hard to understand, makes tests with ridiculous questions, wastes class time trying to figure computer out, and there's a language/cultural barrier that makes communication challenging. He tries to be helpful, but he doesn't reply to emails, misses a lot a class and office hours.
Hayfron has good intentions, but he is just a horrible teacher. I can barely understand what he tries to say. He puts really ambiguous questions on tests and he has trouble with technolgy. He is a good person, though.
very unclear in lectures. He has office hours 2 hours out of the entire week, and he is rarely there. Not helpful and hardly understands any question you ask him. His tests are rediculous and the class average is really low. I dont recommend him if you need a simple GUR, not a good choice!
Really not a bad professor. There's just a communication barrier between him and the students that few people can overcome. It's not his fault, it just makes it more difficult. Not suggested if you have little to no patience.
Language/Culture barrier. Does NOT understand questions from students. Has a poor grading system. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT TAKE This professor if you want to keep your GPA and your sanity. He learned everthing he knows in Europe, and should teach there, not here. the Language/culture barrier is intolerable!!!
This professor is not one htat can lecture with ease. I could barely understand him during his lectures and his lack of technologic understanding. He is not willing to help with acomoidations of time, or if you miss a exam, your out of luck because he will not accomidate you in any way. You have to be able to scheduale any sickness' around class.
very hard to understand...nice guy, but not a teacher. Tests are hard and unclear. Lectures dont really make sense...has a very hard time communicating with students. Sometimes confuses himself...
The material is unavoidably hard but the language barrier makes it a little harder. Sit as close as you can and he makes a lot more sense, talk to him in office hours, read the book religiously.
DO NOT TAKE WITH HIM! And if you do, be prepared to teach yourself - read the book and make sure you know everything in it.
Do not take a class from this teacher! If you are unfortunate enough to end up with him, study the text. Don't believe anything he says during lectures with absolute certainty, because many times he is wrong.
Okay here's the deal. He's new to WWU n his first quarter wasn't so hot. Lets just say since then he has made major improvements towards the better. The class is easy, fun, and interesting. His accent and how he interacts with students just makes it that much more entertaing and fun.Nice guy wants u to do well. Use text website and you'll get an A!
From what all they said, I'd say he DEFFINETLY improved!! He is so funny, his tests are SO easy. They are the basics of everything we learn. I don't know a single person who got lower than a B on any of the exams!! Great teacher, and such a cute personality! TAKE THIS CLASS
DONT LISTEN TO THE BAD COMMENTS. HE IS AN AWESOME TEACHER AND YOU WILL LOVE HIS CLASS. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM YOU'LL KNOW WHY. WHAT A COOL AND FUN GUY AND HE DEFINITELY MAKES THE CLASS VERY EASY.
NICEST GUY. EASIEST CLASS. FUN CLASS TO BE IN VERY FAIR TEACHER.
He is the coolest teacher ever. and he is always up for helping his test are straight forward so if you read the chapter once you will ace the test.
He is such a great teacher and the test are easy if you study and go to class. He wants you to do well and he will help you in anyway.
WOW.I took this guy for 207 and he WAS as bad as the previous reviews. And next quarter i took him for 309 (no other choice) and let me tell you, it was a completely different experience. Not only was he funny and made time fly, he was actually understandable and easy. Why can't some teachers improve like him :cough: Daniel Warner :cough:
he's a good teacher. if you go to class and pay attention you shouldn't have any problems. a little confusing at first but he tends to quickly clear things up.
This guy is pathetic. No clarity, no structure, completely helpless when the power goes out on his precious powerpoints that come from the book...His testing is rather straightfoward and easy though.
He gives study guides for his tests, so its pretty easy to get a good grade. Sometimes his lectures are rather long and painfully boring. If you read and do the study guide though, your guaranteed at least a B.
Probably the easiest econ class I have taken execpt he doesn't know what he is doing. He says he tries to help students but he can't. He always gives study guides for his tests execpt for his final. He changed the format of his final from multi-choice to short answer. Then he says he isn't giving a study guide. I don't think I learned anything.
Hayfron is a funny guy and his lectures aren't too bad. There's 3 quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 final. The quizzes and midterm were really easy. His quizzes and midterm were EXACTLY like the study guide. He changed the format from multiple choice to short asnwer for the final. We think he changed it because he had said it was to be submitted to his boss.
Tests and midterms were easy, just know all the stuff on his study guides. Lectures can be extremely painful to sit through but attendance is madatory. He says he is strict but he not. WHATCH OUT: The Final is nothing like the rest of your tests it is complete BS the largest portion of it is stuff from econ 206.
i really enjoyed this class. very helpful, straightforward tests and studyguides. very funny. lectures can be boring, but if you pay attention applies directly to tests.

no matter what people say hayfron is cool. just bear with him and if you are nice to him he will hook you up. the people that correct him and are ****y to him dont get good grades. Ive had him twice and have gotten 2 A's and i have a 2.3 GPA.. do the math
Don't Listen to the Bad comments. Hayfron is not only one of the funniest teachers I have ever had, he sets up his class incredibly easy for people to do well. Study guides he gives are the same questions from tests and he lectures for you to do well on the quizes/exams. He knows his stuff very well and explains things just fine. HES AWESOME
I just finished my 1st year and Hayfron was by far my favorite teacher. He is soooo funny. Im sure all of his comments will allude to this, but it is true. The material can be thick but he is a miracle worker with it. Somehow he makes microeconomics funnier than any person short of Dave Chapelle. Hes from Ghana, has a badass accent. Much respect
Dont listen to what some of the comments say. He is awesome and is very knowledgable about Econ and has a cool accent. He wants you to do well in the class and gives amazing study guides. Class was mandatory and lost a point for your participation grade for every class missed, but it was fine because I enjoyed going to the class. TAKE HIM!
I would recommend to never take hayfron, ever! Before the first test i had almost a 100% and after the first test the whole class average was a 30%. His response was, "Not my fault maybe you all should have stuided different." Tests are ridiciously hard and good luck trying to understand the guy! I have never had a worse prof!
When i took the class i read all the comments about how great his study guids were ...WRONG! he has currently stop using study guides so first mid-term we had 7 chapters no review no study guide homework was aplia which was diff. problems than test first average for test was 54% and he got mad at us like it was our faults stay away!
The previous two comments are really not giving the professor enough credit. He is a fair grader and his test are average for an Econ class. Economics is a difficult subject, so this course isn't easy, but Hayfron help in every way he can. Also the class average was not 30%, contrary to what the previous post says. it was 54%
This guy is useless... I sincerely question his knowledge of the subject. Maybe he just doesn't know how to explain himself. Either way, its his job to explain himself and he FAILS. This class is completely useless. You wont learn anything. I have an A but I feel like my time was wasted with this class. At least he is some what entertaining. Avoid!
Although he is hard to understand, as long as you read the book and memorize a bunch of definitions, you should be fine. The class is hugely curved, a 70 is a B, and the test are direct information from the book.
Macro 207. Man this guy really tries to teach the material. He is here for you. He curves his final grades as you can see that 90-100 is an A, 85-89 is an A-. He goes over the material on the test. He really wants his students to do well. He will never fail a student who is trying. He will Stick to his word also
Very heavy accent, hard to understand. At times he appeared to get flustered when trying to explain a problem when almost everyone in the class didn't understand it. One mid-term in which 1/2 the class failed, large final multiple choice with some being easy to help bring up your score. Nice guy, but stay away
Hayfron is simply awesome. He is a very fair grader at the end of the semester, he uses his discretion in grading and has a nice 85-100 A range. He has a great personality, great for nonmajors, very fair and nice. His accent is great too.
These prior comments seem very inconsistent and perhaps he has better days than others. But in my experience I have very little respect for this professor. It is apparent to me that he has very little knowledge of the material he is teaching. He seems like a fun guy to hang out with, and his grading scale is very generous, but the class was a wa
Class was pretty simple. Read the book take the test. Test are MC. Test aren't that bad if you have a general understanding of the material. If you talk to him and get to know him and go to his office hours. You won't get less than a B. Fact.
He uses Aplia (online assigments) and it is worthless. All quarter assignments were off and he repeatedly said its not his fault, its Aplia's. Overall his test aren't too bad and he grades on a curve.
Decent class. Explained things over and over again and extremely slowly. Grades on a curve. Tests were all multiple choice. Randomly would assign Hw out of the book. OH.. He wore the same outfit everyday for a week then a different outfit the next week. Kept me giggling!
Material is easy but I struggled with focus in the class. His accent is thick at times, and if he goes monotone for a while it can be very hard to pay attention. Uses Aplia, the impossible online homework that changes what it wants from you every week. Other than that, it's a decent course.
Knows economics, struggles with english. He doesn't always understand what students are saying, and his responses are subsequently confusing. His accent is extremely thick, which makes it difficult to comprehend if you don't already know what he's talking about. He is very willing to help, and doesn't expect unreasonable work.
His tests are kinda confusing not necessarily challenging. Has fair curve to make up for it. Kind of hard to understand at first but after a week its no biggie. From what i understand he is the best choice for econ 309.
Great teacher, once you get used to his accent.
I thought he was great! at first the accent was hard to understand, but i find it useful in this time and age to work harder at understanding all people! I learned a lot from this class! He is SOO funny... wish he could teach all my classes! I will miss him
I would rather have my head stapled to an economics book than have to suffer through another course with Hayfron. He is one of the most arrogant professors in CBE, and he doesn't have the teaching ability to compensate. Class is VERY easy, if you can pay attention. Attendance is not mandatory, I never went and got out with a B.
Read the book, follow along in class and you'll get a B. Not too tough of a class :-D
Just not a very good teacher at all. You can tell he knows it: but if you don't understand it at the beginning, you won't understand it by the end. His accent and less than thorough command of English makes hard concepts even harder to understand. I don't recommend him at all, and found classes exceedingly harder to take as the year went on.
I Honestly have no idea what to write. I failed the first two test. Did poor on the homework. But yet he still will do "Magic" and curve the CRAP out of the class. Our class average right now is a 65%. He usually adds 10%+ So if you have a 60% (C-) Then you'll probably get a B or B-.
WWU has several really good teachers in the CBE, Hayfron is up there with the best of them. Hayfron wants you to understand the material, and will not test you on something he didn't cover in class. There is no issue with a language barrier, students from Japan that had trouble talking to me in class did good. Take a class from Hayfron, he's great!
I must say, I was skeptical at first about this class after reading some bad comments about him. However, he grades everything on a BIG curve. If you get above a B+, you have the option of not taking the final exam too. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR
WORST Econ professor ever! Doesn't know how to teach. He skips subjects from the book because they are "hard" and doesn't know how to teach them... however, they are still on the exams. I got an A and in turn didn't have to take the final, so I was done with the course a month early... However, I didn't learn ANYTHING!
DONT DO IT. he is a horrible teacher. he gets mad at the class when we dont understand the material even though we dont understand it because of how horrible he is at teaching it. Dont take it from him.
Hayfron is a great teacher... sometimes. He tends to mix information up, so you don't know what you are supposed to do. He is enthusiastic about the subject, so that helps, but just be ready to study!! If you don't study, you won't do well, simple as that.
For not liking economics, this class was great. I liked how he taught the class. Made sure that everyone knows the materials. Tests were decent-Aplia assignments were great.
He really wants the students to do well, but he can be very un-organized. He is humorous at times, but sometimes he's not fully prepared for class.
He is one of my favorite prefessors! I took Econ for a GUR and ended up loving it! If you come to class everyday and really take good notes youll do fine! If you sit in the front and are engaged with him he really will like you and give you better marks! Definately take him! Hes awesome and has a cool accent!
he tries to be funny, he's dull. his accent is very strong and adds to his dull lectures. he thinks if he says "are you ok?" after every sentence we understand better. no one knows what hes asking when he asks a question. first class that put me to sleep (and i took it late afternoon). he's alright though, test questions are from a study guide.
He is the absolute worst. His teaching style...he has none. He tells you to write something down but doesn't explain it b/c "we're behind", which I guess we were a lot. His final quizes are easy and his final is very hard. I never had a teacher just quit teaching like he did. what a jerk!
Terrible at lecturing but I got a B in the class although i didn't recieve better than a 70 on my 3 midterms. Just go to class, even if you don't pay attention, and he will give you a decent grade.
The best word for the professor is quirky. He knows what he's teaching and he does care about students. I didn't think his accent was too bad (if you can understand a slight north-african accent you should be fine). The class, I felt, was basically a review of Macro&Micro with some new equations, which made it easy, but also really boring at times.
Worst professor I've ever had. He yelled at us everyday because of his lack of knowledge. We asked pretty basic questions too... If you can avoid it, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. EVER, EVER, EVER. Horrible. And he's almost impossible to understand because of his thick accent. Worst 80 minutes of my day.
I do not care for Econ at all but this was one of the most entertaining classes I have ever been in. Tests were easy if you do the study guides, final was a different story. Everyday I came to class I knew I would have a story to tell my roommates about the crazy shenanigans he pulled in class that day. Got a B+ and didn't pay attention at all.
While clearly enthusiastic and knowledgeable, this man should never teach. He consistently contradicts himself in class and fails to explain concepts when asked by students for a better explanation. This class is easy to pass if you decide you want to take the effort to teach yourself everything outside of class. No point in showing up.
He certainly tries but he can just be hard to follow. He can use poor examples, talk in circles and while it isn't his fault his accent can make it hard to understand him. Nice guy just not the greatest teacher. Takes attendence randomly but you really only need to study on your own to do well
I thought Hayfron was a great professor. Likes to joke around and is fun. Sit up front, take notes, pay attention, and study for exams. Gives study guides for all tests except for final. Fairly easy class if you pay attention. Cool guy all around. I would recommend taking him.
Strong accent which does take a toll on how well you can understand the information. Handwriting is illegible at times with key formulas being discussed. Grading is poor as the class average is extremely low (C-). Although his personality and interest in the subject are great, it is a lot of work just to receive mediocre grades in the class.
I think professor Hayfron was a great prof. He really made me understand econ, which at first i didn't like. Seriously, take a class with him he is super helpful and does care about his students. To those students who are hating, please ignore them since they have no idea what they are talking about. Go this office hours, super nice guy & helpful!!!
Going to class definitely helps. Tests are pretty straightforward, especially if you do the reading and use the study guides he posts online. But seriously, go to class and sit in the front and ask questions. He will notice!
If you show up to class everyday, you will receive an A, B, or C depending on how well you do on the three tests. He's a nice person and the topic is interesting; he puts theory/concepts into the "real world" and you will leave the class with the knowledge and ability to think critically about current economic issues. Long story short, SHOW UP!
Hayfron is a nice enough guy, but not the best econ teacher I've had by far. He has difficulty explaining things to students and would often confuse himself and the class. Often contradicts himself. I always learned more from reading the book than his lectures. Tests aren't too hard. Nice guy, not so great teacher.
Dont know why he is rated soo low. As long as you read and attend lectures you will get an A. All the problems he goes over in class are on the test. He is really clear about what going to be on the test
Honestly, great teacher! I highly recommend his class. He really wants you to know the material and he will help you. Might be a little hard to understand at times, but that doesn't take away from his helpfulness because he is always willing to break it down and make sure you learn. Going to class, isn't mandatory, but he sure will like you more.
HORRIBLE PROF! Do not take ECON from him! It is nearly impossible to understand his accent and he does example problems WRONG on the board which makes learning anything from him next to impossible.
his accent was a little difficult to get over and throws you off at first, but after the first week i was pretty well accustomed to it. some of the questions from the study guide are on the test. lectures can get pretty boring but he tries to have fun with the class. read the book and you'll be golden!
random trail offs in lecture... "practice" test problems aren't anywhere near what is on tests. lectures.. though helpful, still leave you with questions after sitting in class
He is very confusing and often contradicts himself. I would avoid this teacher if you are not good at teaching yourself.
Great class great professor. Your blowing it, if you dont get in the B range. His grading is curved A (90-100) B (80-84) C (60-64) with plus's and minus in between. Read the chapters, and look over the practice problems and you'll be happy with this class. Attendance isn't mandatory.
Not a fun class, esp at 8:30 in the morning. Difficult to understand lectures because of accent. Not good at answering students' questions. Gets very side tracked. Does not explain info, simply states, "memorize this, it is important." Frequently behind where we should be. However, tests are similar to study guides. DO NOT take this class from him!
Just don't. He is incredibly difficult to understand, and often confuses himself and has to redo problems. He takes off points from your grade for every class you miss, and the other portion of your grade is from two tests he doesn't prepare you for. If you read the book constantly you'll have a shot at a good grade, but otherwise AVOID.
Strong accent, but if you sit up front and attend class, you can get a good grade. I thought he was super nice and funny! He really helped me out when I didn't understand what was going on
Hayfron tries. I think he really does, but he's a terrible teacher. His lessons are confusing and poorly taught. I think I'm less confused when I don't go to class. The homework is barely relevant to the tests, and he pulls the multiple choice straight from the study guide. Avoid if you enjoy your sanity.
Not good at explaining assignments and gives confusing quiz questions as well as in class gives confusing examples (gets confused himself)
Professor Hayfron is super nice but his class is extremely boring. As long as you go though, you'll pass. His english is poor and he has a thick accent which can be hard to understand at times but he tries to make things clear. He takes his information straight from the textbook, so if you review the textbook you'll be fine.
John was often hard to understand and seemed like he really didn't want to be teaching. He made very little effort to make the class exciting or interesting and gave off a very judgmental and intimidating vibe (which made it hard to ask questions). His grading was average and relatively fair but I definitely wouldn't recommend this professor.
This was the most boring class ever and he is such a dry teacher. He was constantly grading my assignments wrong and would never put the correct grade in the grade book. You basically have to stay on top of him with everything or else you're grade will be affected.
If you go into the class without any interest, you will leave with even less. If you go into the class interested in economics, you will be fine.
Very dry and boring class. He's doesnt give very good answers to students questions and can sometimes go over things at a pretty quick pace. He's kind of funny, which makes the class a little interesting at times. Take notes and don't expect much.
Learned more from the book than any of his lectures. A very rude person in general and terrible at lecturing. Loses track of what he's talking about and is not good at answering questions.
I love economics but he made me hate ECON207. Hayfron is rude and unapproachable. Lectures are long and there's no break during class. I learned everything I know about macro from the textbook, not Hayfron. He is the reason that I always use rate my professor from now on. Take this class with anyone else if you can!
One of the worst professors I have had at Western. Rude. Hard time with language. Bad examples. Consistently teaches the wrong things. When students point out where he is wrong he will argue himself in circles wrongly. Not approachable. A few times the whole class pointed out he was wrong and he still wouldn't admit it. Killed my interest in econ.
Hayfron is not a good prof. It's clear he is knowledgeable about economics but he has a hard time turning it into a class. Buy the book and read it, because its VERY hard to understand him. On the plus side the class is extremely easy to pass as the grading scale is very forgiving.
Hayfron is a good person, but not a very good teacher. A bit egotistical and doesn't accept when he's made a mistake. He is straight up THE WORST at answering questions and clarifying things. You hardly learn any Economics from him other than very simple things. He also like to repeat things all the time. If you get stuck with him, I'm sorry!
Lol. Just lol. He was my first prof I had the fortune to encounter at WWU seeing as I was a transfer student. Syllabus was wrong. Questions on the exam were even wrong (which just blew my mind). He mixes up little things all the time which tend to be important. I would argue that he absolutely does not care about his classes. Pure laziness.
If you can understand his accent, tolerate verbal abuse and deal with no communication over canvas then maybe you can pass
