Such a cute guy! This class is really, really hard. The test content comes from out of nowhere and you never feel 100% prepared for them. There's a chance to do an extra-credit project, so do it! Movies almost every Friday. He's a nice guy.
The class as a whole is boring, though it could be worse. Tests are somewhat difficult. One of the hardest classes I have had. Even if you study all the chapters in the book, chances are you still won't know several answers on the test, or the answers to the ONE graph that he picks out of 20 to put on the test.
Adorable guy, but boring class. I went into the class interested to learn, and now I can't wait to get out. Tests are pretty hard - you need to do the reading. Attendence is not mandatory, but you'll do better on the tests if you attend. Not recommended, but not terrible. Just boring.
He's very helpful to women, specially if you play up to him and flirt. Boring class, just smile and you'll pass.
This is a class about maps. Under no circumstances should you choose to take this section of Gsci 104. If you do, expect around 3 hours a week outside of class of high school style busy work. This is a 1 credit class and I've spent more time on it than any of my other classes this semester. He grades extremely hard as if we are map majors.
Get ready for one of the most pointless classes you will ever take. Literally, it is pointless; go to class and the test is still going to be difficult. Read the the entire book and its still impossible to get the 20 questions he takes from it right. Gen Ed? ...more like "its-not-even-worth-it-so-ill-just-take-my-first-C" Ed. have fun.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Very pointless class. haynes gives no description of anything that will be on the tests which are always on random information that can not be obtained by studying or even reading all of the chapters. do not take this class
kinda random and makes oddball jokes. reading the textbook could just be confusing so going to class can be helpful. his tests though come out of nowhere and def cover material that you never went over in class. its just full of surprises! take at own risk.
I thought this class was pretty easy. It is true that there are questions on the test that seem to come out of nowhere. I only read 2 chapters in the book and simply by going to class and going over his powerpoints before the test I pulled off an A-. Not to mention he gives you an opportunity to boost your grade by half a letter point.
He's a really nice guy, but his tests are extremely hard & filled with random questions, so you never know what to study. Nothing against him, but lectures are very boring and seem to drag on forever...
He really is a great guy. He's helpful, really knows his stuff, and makes awkward jokes. His tests are pretty difficult though. But the powerpoints really help, and he's always willing to help. I definitely learned a lot from this class.
he is a great professor. the tests (4 over the course of the semester) are somewhat difficult but as long as you come to class (even thought there is no attendance policy) and listen/take notes, youll be fine. hes pretty clear in his explinations and answers questions without getting too technical. i'd recommend him if you're willing to work.
This class is so easy. It feels like a high school level course. no attendance. posts the lectures so you don't need to go. barely studied, never went, got a B+ 4 tests, one project. everything 20%. don't leave your project off til the last minute though, and consider doing the extra credit one, it'll bump you up half a letter grade.
I didnt feel like his lectures helped that much. They get kinda boring. But, I read the book and I did fine. It isn't that hard, if you have half a brain.
I went for the test and the first class that is five classes total and I got an A easiest class ever.
His class is so boring and not worth going to. He basically just reads off the powerpoints, shows movies, and makes awkward jokes. Its an easy class just not interesting.
John Haynes is hilarious! His class is difficult, because your only grades are the tests and a big project, and the tests are pretty tough. So if you dont want to study or go to class, dont take it. But if your willing to, he cracks me up! class is interesting if you pay attention. Plus, he looke like Jon Voight...which is awesome!
I do not recommend this class or this professor. You would think it would be an easy class but its really not. Lectures are boring, and tests are kind of hard too. I wouldn't say the tests are necessarily nitpicky but you just really have to study all of the material.
This was the most boring class I have taken in my entire life. I had to fight every class to stay awake. He's obviously very interested in his subject, and the class itself wasn't very hard as long as you study, but it could have been much better. It says something about the quality of a class when you sleep every class yet leave with a high grade.
went into the class thinking it was going to be my easiest gen ed class. I was very very wrong. He makes the class as hard as possible. The lectures are completly pointless. He puts the hardest material on tests. Do not take this as your gen ed science im warning you now
I've had Dr.Haynes for many classes--one of my favorite professors in the Geology department. He loves what he teaches and the students who are interested. Get to know him, and he'll be really helpful! Loved 401 and 230L with him. 401, very easy. 230L is hard no matter, just make sure you study hard for the practicals!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! The exams are pretty hard, the lecture is extremely boring, and he is not helpful at all.
What an unpleasant, grumpy old man. Uses the most unclear diagrams on the tests. And seems to have anger issues. Does use clear examples when explaining things in class; too bad the tests don't relate at all. Too hard for a gened, not worth enduring his bitterness at life.
He can come off as a jerk in class. Go to his office hours, introduce yourself and get to know what an awesome guy he is. One of my favorite professors at JMU. Lectures can be boring, but if you get off facebook and pay attention in class, it will pay off. You might even hear him crack a joke if you listen, he is hilarious! DO THE EXTRA OYO PROJECT
All around not a very good class to take for a cluster requirement. The tests are hard and a lot of it comes from his lectures which are very boring. He knows the subject very well and assumes that everyone knows it well too. Attendance is not required but it's important that you go if you want to do well on the tests
If you are thinking of taking this class, just stop now. This is the most boring lecture in the history of lectures and is way too hard for a genED, your grade is determined by 4 very difficult tests and a project. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS unless you like staring at PowerPoints of only pictures and listening to him compare each picture to food.
Do not take this class. His lectures are boring and tests are extremely hard. I went to every single class and read the book and still failed all his tests miserably. Bottom line: too hard for a gen ed.
Haynes comes off as a bit of a jerk. He is very interested and knowledgeable about Oceanography . If you take this for an easy GenEd, reconsider. This is a very demanding class. Three tests and a final exam. Attendance is not mandatory but you definitely should attend in order to get a decent grade on tests.
DO NOT TAKE AS GEN ED, big mistake. He's a reasonable guy, but his lectures are almost impossible to pay attention to let alone take away any useful information from his rambles. TIP: DO THE OYO PROJECTS EARLY IN THE SEMESTER.
All he does in class is go through powerpoints and doesnt get into detail with the subject matter. all that lies in the powerpoints are brief and slightly irrelevant aspects to every chapter reviewed. He never gives assignments except for the final project and tests. Read the textbook and take notes if you want to pass the class.
I was really frustrated with this class. Dr. Haynes has been teaching for 15 years and because of this he doesn't think he needs to change his lectures or show updated videos. When I went to see him because I was having trouble with the tests he replied "This is college" and expected all of his students to just try harder. I would not recommend.
Incredibly boring and even if you feel that you are prepared for the test, you're not. On average 2100 kids get an a on his test and the average is almost always a d if not lower. Avoid his class at all costs.
He talks nonstop the entire lecture, and his tests sometimes have material I have never seen before, and I showed up to every lecture. This class is way too difficult for an introductory class or gen-ed. Avoid taking him.
He is knowledgable and loves the subject. His PPT notes are general whilst his exams are very specific so it's very hard to do well. People average below C grades on exams. A horrible experience for me and I do feel bad about saying so. I'm sure he's a nice guy but a little intimidating as a prof. Avoid at all costs, this is too hard for a gen-ed.
One of the hardest gen-ed classes I had to take. He is a nice guy and is interested about the oceans but more than 80% of his lectures have nothing to do with what is on the test. He's like an encyclopedia that never ends. I printed out the notes, went to class and read the textbook and still struggled. Luckily I somehow got a B in this class.
Professor Haynes is without a doubt one of the more passionate teachers when it comes to their subject that I've ever seen. BUT, he talks and talks and talks. His lectures seem like 4 hours with powerpoints that show little detail while on the other hand his tests require for very specific information. Way to hard to be just a gen-ed class.
Your tests will be really low but his projects can boost your grade up tremendously.
Dr. Haynes is a very boring and makes a lot of stupid geology jokes but this class is survivable. Try not to get into the habit of skipping class especially after tests because he sometimes does give extra credit for attendance. Pay attention the the powerpoints and write down stuff he repeats a few times and you will manage a solid B in the class
This class is by far the hardest class I have ever taken. I highly recommend not taking this course. The lectures have nothing to do with what is put on the tests. Be prepared to rely on your textbook and do a lot of studying.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! Especially if you're only taking it for gen ed credit. Dr. Haynes is insanely boring and his exams are tough (there are only 4). There's also a huge project at the end of the semester that requires a lot of work but might boost your grade cause the class average on exams is a low C. Don't skip even though it's tempting
Don't take this class unless you absolutely have to. The lectures are boring, it's impossible to stay awake. I withdrew from the class it was so bad. It's also hard, the powerpoint are long and he'll spend forever talking bout one slide. The videos are boring as well and projects require a lot of work. Too much to just be a gen ed.
Most boring class I've ever had because he lectures for an hour and 15 min straight. His power points basically only have pictures on them so you really have to pay attention to what he is teaching, but staying awake is the hardest thing. His tests are very very specific and detailed, but he's not the harshest grader. attendance is not mandatory.
I didn't look at rate my professor before I took Professor Haynes and it was a mistake. His class is very boring and he lectures the whole time. HIs exams are extremely hard and the class average on them was never higher than a 70%. Do not recommend taking him at all!!!!
The exams are really difficult and can bring down your grade if you do poorly and you can't skip class because a lot of random exam questions come from lecture. Prof Haynes however is very enthusiastic about oceanography, just not good at lecturing so it's extremely boring and oceanography term dense.
Boring class hard to stay awake extremely lecture heavy but lectures are not helpful towards exam. Overall STRESSFUL class couldn't get above a C on exam no matter how hard I tried, wouldn't recommend. He knows the material well but doesn't know how to convey it. Saving grace was final project at the end of semester & the professionalism points.
His lectures are pretty boring, and his tests are insanely difficult. He doesn't teach everything on the test, so you have to read every single word in the textbook. He offers one extra credit project, but nearly every project requires traveling. He is very knowledgable about the subject, but he can't teach a GenED class effectively.
Haynes is a gem and is the funniest professor I have ever had. This class is awesome but challenging, so get ready to memorize the textbook. Material may be difficult, but go to office hours/attend lectures and you will be fine. He offers an extra credit project that tags 5% onto your final grade. Greatest class.
He seems to enjoy teaching, but it is hard to stay awake at times. HW map assignments are VERY time consuming (it's hard to find a lot of the places on google maps). Tests are very difficult even if you feel prepared!! I feel like my grade isn't a good representation of what I have learned. OYO projects aren't too bad and help your final grade.
Really nice guy, I enjoyed his humor and he clearly cared about what he was teaching, but for a gen ed, man this class is tough. His OYO projects are not bad at all, but if you are wise you will do a little bit throughout the semester, that way its really easy. Very lecture heavy, but show up to EVERY class!!! Tests are hard as monkey dump.
The people complaining that it "wasn't an easy A" or they actually had to do work are pathetic. You're in college and Haynes teaches as such. The tests are extensive but all the information is given in class that will be on the tests and he doesn't try and trick you. If you email him a pic of your maps that day they're due you can turn them in late
Exams are nearly impossible to do well on (even going in with all of the readings and perfect attendance under your belt), maps due almost every week that are time consuming and absolutely irrelevant to the other course material, extensive final project, ridiculously demanding!!! DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU CAN AVOID IT.
Dr. Haynes is such a nice and funny man, but he's not a good professor by any means. No notes, just powerpoints with pictures, so studying is very hard unless you've written down every word he's said during lectures. The average for the test are Cs and Ds, so don't be surprised. Love him, but my grade would be much better if I had another professor
Dr. Haynes is really nice and you can tell he cares about what he's teaching, but he's a horrible professor. He never emails back, there are only three tests that each count as 15% of your grade and they're extremely hard, and it is very hard to study for them. The lectures are boring and I never got above a C on the tests.
His lectures had little to do with the tests, and he took forever to grade. He expected every single student to put in the effort of a 400 level class. There is a massive project at the end of the semester, graded out of 10 points and worth 20% of the class grade. There were homework maps we had to fill in but had no relevance to the material.
Tends to ramble a lot, it takes a while to get a direct answer from him, but overall a good guy and easy to follow lectures.
This is a terrible class, I would recommend you stay as far away from this class as you could. He doesn't teach you anything in class, nothing that you go over in class is on any of the tests. You could read the books, you can watch the videos, and you still will not do good in this class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I put in so much effort and have not gotten better than a B on his tests. Makes you do time consuming, irrelevant maps. No matter how much effort you put in it is impossible. The averages on our tests are Fs and Ds. Last test class average was a 59% and 171/200 got below a C. DO NOT TAKE DO NOT TAKE
Nice guy outside of class. Lectures are very boring and long. Requires a lot of out students. Doesnt grade things till last minute. Tests are extremely hard. Go to office hours for extra help hes super nice and will help with anything.
Dr. Haynes is such a good professor. While many people take this thinking it will be an easy science gen ed, he treats it like any other science course. As long as you attend class, read the book and watch the short videos, you will do fine on tests. Also the OYO project and extra credit are very easy and it counts for 30% of your final grade!
Tests are very hard, the average was always a D or below. Would blame the students for doing poorly, even though he made tests way harder than they needed to be. He makes you label maps that take forever, and only count for 5% of your final grade. He does give one extra credit opportunity at the end of the year. Not an easy A
The most boring class I've ever taken. He's a good guy but lectures were long and there wasn't much on the powerpoint slides so you had to really listen to what he was saying, which was hard because he rambled. If you don't have an extremely strong attention span I would not take him
He's a really sweet guy, but his power points are not helpful and he rambles a lot which makes it hard to pick out the important parts and the whole class consistently scored low on exams as a result. He also made us do maps that took a really long time and didn't have anything to do with the material we were learning/tested on. He did curve grades
Haynes was an awful professor. His lectures were extremely boring and in the end you just need to read the textbook word for word if you want to do ok on the exams. But the exams were very hard and the averages were around D's but he blamed it on the students. He makes you fill out tedious maps that never come into use and aren't worth much.
The lectures are extremely boring and heavy in notes. Tests are nearly impossible no matter how hard you study. There will always be material that is not covered in class/in the book that will show up on the exams. Also, the exams are so lengthy that 30+ students will never finish the exam. Maps for homework are so unnecessary, take hours to do.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. Everyone does bad on his tests and his lectures are boring. I learned more reading the textbook than listening to him in lecture. He also puts the grades in Canvas weird so you have no idea what your grade is until you get your final grade after everything is done. Do yourself a favor and take someone else
This is not a class you want to take if you only need the gen ed credit. If you are not interested in the subject, this is a very difficult class to show up and sit through because it consists only of ppt lecture. There are ridiculous map homeworks you are not tested on and worth only 5% compared to 3 difficult tests at 70% and a massive project.
Very boring and difficult professor. Avoid taking it as a Gen Ed credit if you can. Classes were all 90-minute lectures with no breaks and no words on the powerpoint to take notes off of. I thought I was failing the whole semester but over half of your grade comes from projects and the final exam in the last week. Read word for word to pass.
Do not take this class for a Gen Ed. It will be one of the hardest classes you will take. He is not a good professor, ppts are wordless, and he has no idea how to teach. Tests are incredibly hard. by the end of the semester I did not show up to class and taught myself the material.
Most students think he's a bad teacher bc they don't care about the class but that's their fault not his. My issue with his oceanography class were the tests. Even with a background in some the topics covered, I felt the tests were unnecessarily hard, asking about minuscule details from class material. Most people do poorly and I wouldn't recommend
He treats a gen ed course like it is a major class and his lectures are impossible to sit through. There also are barely any words on his powerpoints so it is hard to take notes. The maps he assigns are pointless and only worth 5% of your grade which is unfair for how long they take. The tests are basically impossible unless you memorize textbook.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! better off taking chemistry or physics if you are trying to knock out a gen ed. I have taken classes in marine biology so this class shouldn't be hard for me but some of the questions on the test are no where to be found in the tetxbook or his lectures. His powerpoint slides have no words so you have no idea what to write down
Every other week, you take a quiz where you need to have basically memorized the chapters in the textbook he gives.
Originally though this class would be interesting and a fairly basic and easy class, but man, was I so wrong. This professor has blatantly stated that if youre not spending hours a week solely working studying, reading, watching videos/movies for his class you will not pass. He expects too much, even for a college class. HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND!!
This class was incredibly hard because of the quizzes every 2 weeks with short time limits. I had a C+ the whole semester till the very end and got an A-, the extra credit project bumped my grade up by a whole letter grade so don't worry, the final project and extra credit will save you in the end, but its a LOT of work overall for a gen ed.
While Hayne's is one of the nicest people I have ever met, he is not a good professor at all. He spent the entire hour and 15 minutes of class looking at Google Maps and talking about it. So boring. Tests and homework are extremely difficult and nothing like lectures at all. Stay clear of his class PLEASE! I wish I did.
I would not take this class again. The quizzes are very difficult, and there is a lot of material that is expected to be read and kept up with. Taking this course as gen ed was very difficult, and much more stressful than it needed to be. He seems really nice in his lectures, but the quizzes were very difficult and hard to pass.
While he was nice during the lectures, i don' think he was a great professor for this class. During his quizzes students were given barely any time and many people had to rush through just to finish on time. He is also a very strict grader and takes off points for very minimal things. I would not recommend taking this class unless absolutly needed
His lectures are hard to follow as he goes on a lot of tangents and doesn't put many words on his slides, and sometimes just puts vague pictures on slides. For the midterm the class average was 53%, and nobody got an A, which shows he doesn't prepare students for exams. Many things that aren't in the textbook or lectures are on exams/quizzes
He expects way too much for a gen ed. Reading 40 pgs, 20+ pages on articles (small font), Videos (some about 1 hour long), on top of that you have to do these tedious maps that he never quizzes you on. He rambles on and on during lectures and is hard to follow. The average for the exam my year was a 55 (168 students), he then blamed the students.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS FOR A GEN ED! You have a quiz on three chapters every 2 weeks that add up to 30% of your grade. This class is the most work I've ever had to do in my entire life. He also gives out maps that don't even put a dent in your grade but they take sooo much time to do. I've put 3x as much time into this class as my major! Useless!
terrible professor, his lectures are so long and all of his slides are basically just pictures and rambles on and on about random stuff making it very hard to follow and take notes. The quizzes every other week are impossible unless you memorize every page of the textbook. Everyone I know is failing this class including me.
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE HAD THROUGH ALL OF MY SCHOOLING. He is nice but one of the worst people at teaching I have ever seen. Slides are covered in words/hard to read. Gives very little time on exams, and the exams have little to do with what was "taught". He gives busy work in college. If there wasn't a word count, this would be an essay.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FOR A CREDIT. This class is treated like a capstone and its nothing but a GPA tanker, even for good students. Overall, Dr. Haynes is a nice guy, but a terrible professor.
This man will do everything to make his class even more difficult. There are terrible lectures where he just rambles mostly about stuff that will not be on any exam. His quizzes are so hard that I can spend three days studying and still only get a c. The maps are horribly time-consuming and don't count for much. HE MADE THE FINAL PROJECTSINGLESPACE
Professor Haynes is such a sweet man, but not a good professor at all. I studied a good amount for the midterm and it still was the hardest test I've ever taken. Like everyone else is saying, his lectures are useless and he goes on tangents about irrelevant information. DO NOT take this class for a gen ed credit.
One of least favorite professors at JMU. Quizzes and Tests are extremely hard and Haynes teaches this class as if he expected everyone to commit all their time to it, but the maps and end of semester project will boost your grade. If you're taking this as a GenEd because you don't want to take Physics/Chem, consider taking a different professor.
Honestly a great professor, just makes this class really hard for a gen ed. Quizzes are virtually impossible if you don't read. The OYO project at the end is a life saver, big time grade booster for the late semester. Tests are extremely hard but honestly go to lecture, take notes, and read his material, and you will do just fine.
There's lots of reading every week and assignments with information you aren't tested on. The midterm and final were the hardest I had to take this semester and anything from the lectures, readings, articles, and videos is fair game on them. You can tell that he's passionate about what he's teaching, but I wouldn't take the class again.
Lectures are boring and hard to follow , quizzes and test are hard , and overall a lot of work for a gen Ed . However at the end of the semester he curves heavy (had a 79 and got a B on the final and ended up with an A) and the OYO project is an automatic A if you do it and put effort into it . Put in effort at the end of the year and youll do ok
Failed both midterm and final and somehow ended with a B+! He is a sweet teacher and really wants you to succeed, so make sure you go to every class. The lectures are long but easy to follow. Doing well on the tests is impossible, so don't be shocked when you fail. Quizzes are also just as hard. DO ur OYO project its an easy A!
Dr Haynes is a nice man, I enjoy talking to him and find his pursuits very interesting. However, he is the worst professor in the department. His quizzes and tests are difficult to the point where it does not matter how much you study. His homework assignments are often very tedious, meaningless, and do not count heavily towards your grade. Avoid.
This class is fairly hard, especially for a gen ed, but the professor is so nice! Mr Haynes really does want you to do well, and he will give you great help and advice as long as you ask for it. Talk to him early on, and he will help you out. Tests and quizzes are hard, so attend lectures and take good notes. DO THE OYO AND EXTRA CRED OYO!
All quizzes essentially boil down to "I showed this graphic once for five minutes in class three weeks ago. I sure hope you remember everything I said about it." Lectures are boring and monotone. Homework is entirely busywork and is never used or discussed in class whatsoever. Will outsource all actual teaching to videos and tangent in class.
Talk about a GPA tanker. Quizzes are impossible to get anything higher than a C. I studied for 4 days for one quiz and got a 76. He expects you to know the textbook from front to back. DO NOT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE MAPS. It literally takes me 3 hours to do one it counts for almost nothing. And he grades them harshly I can't get an A on any map.
this is the hardest class I have ever taken. I am taking this class as a gen ed and it is so frustrating. The maps we have to do about every other week and they take sooo long and count for like nothing on your grade. you will fail the midterm and final. do not take. i am filled with rage.
This class is VERY hard for a gen ed. The exam's are ridiculously hard. There is a LOT of time you need to put in outside of class just to get by. Don't take this if you're looking for an easy science gen-ed.
This class was extremely, unnecessarily difficult for a Gen Ed. The homework is just busywork, never to be discussed in class/on tests. Tests are nearly impossible, and he doesn't give study guides. Quizzes are online but the right answers aren't given after submission. Try to avoid if possible.
I regret taking this class so much. His lectures are long and boring. In addition to remembering everything from the lectures and textbook, he also expects you to watch all the videos he assigns and remember specific details from them. The only way to pass this class is to take good notes and sometimes that's not even enough. Don't take this class
This class was the bane of my existence. Dr. Haynes is pretty nice from the few conversations I have had with him, but his teaching style is just spewing out random information every lecture. He doesn't tie his points together comprehensibly which makes his lectures hard to follow and hard to take notes for. The tests are incredibly difficult.
Whatever you do do NOT take this class. He will take 40 points off of a map assignment for it being "unorganized" even if all of the points are correct. His quizzes are NOTHING like the lectures and they are nearly impossible. Also I studied for the midterm for 6 hours and failed it. Nothing that I studied from the lectures were on it
POV: you go to class, do the readings, study, and still fail every assignment for this class. His tests are literally impossible. The maps take like an hour each and he took 10 points off one of mine because my "lines were too thick". Like what. Also the quizzes are ridiculous too. Save your mental health and don't take him unless you have to.
Professor Haynes is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about this subject. So, his lectures are very information heavy, which means lots of note-taking. While he doesn't take attendance, majority of everything on the quiz and test are from his own words from the lecture. His quizzes and test aren't easy, but if you study you will do fine.
The absolutely worst professor I have ever had in my whole life. I have never even gotten below a B in any class all through college and I am literally struggling to PASS. If you want to be mentally unstable do not take this class.
If you are looking for an easy to average gen ed, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! The workload for a gen ed is absolutely ridiculous. The textbook chapters are so long and 99% of the information in them is completely useless. However, the smallest graph or two short sentences out of hundreds could be eligible for a test question worth lots of points.
I would say this is the best gen ed in this cluster. There is no real work to do other than one assignment every other week. There are 2 tests that are online that I got a 95 on both. I did not really go to class that much but when I did the lectures were super helpful. If you are looking for a breeze of a class this is probably your best bet.
He's the reason tenured professors should not exist.
no. just no. Dr. Haynes really is a kind man and very understanding, but this class is so ridiculously hard for a GenEd. Absolutely nothing we learned was on the midterm and I have never earned a worst grade on a test. He also goes over so much stuff per lecture and one thing he says for 2 seconds is fair game. GPA tanker 100% do not take.
let's hope he curves oh my.
I have never regretted taking a class more than I have regretted this one so PLEASE avoid this class at ALL costs if you want to be sane. Never in my life have I failed a class but I am struggling so hard to pass. Complete GPA tanker and the maps he makes you do take 3 hours and do absolutely nothing for your grade. He's a nice guy but....
Prof. Haynes is deeply knowledgable about what he teaches, but he expects far too much from some people's first semester at JMU. Few points for maps that take hours, tough graded tests, and a OYO project that could end up being a 13 page, single spaced paper! Thats not even to mention the textbook, bonus readings, and videos upwards of 1 hour long
Meet with him after class! If you put in effort and he becomes familiar with you, he's more likely to be accommodating. He strongly emphasizes "fairness," so keep due dates in mind. Focus on maps and the OYO project to make up for bad tests/quizzes. DO THE EC OYO! Follow directions EXACTLY! I did poorly on exams and had an F, ended with a C+.
This class was SO boring. His lecture slides are nothing but pictures and diagrams that he rambles about. The quizzes and tests were all straight from the textbook and again, nothing but maps and diagrams that you're expected to just understand. This class did not feel like a gen ed and I definitely wouldn't recommend Haynes.
He's super boring. I didn't pay attention in class at all. The quizzes are super difficult. He assigns at least 3 readings and videos each week.
Worst teacher I've had. Lectures are impossible to follow, it's an insane amount of information that he doesn't try to connect at all, and he delivers in a depressing, monotone voice. Doesn't engage with the class in any way during class. The slides are impossible to follow most of the time. Tests are legitimately impossible. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
He's SO. BORING. I literally could fall asleep in that class, he doesn't connect anything that he does to anything, I went to a considerable number of his classes and still didn't understand. Let me state for the record that I WAS excited for this and I'm not one to usually complain about professors (this is my first review).
This professor makes it very clear he wants you to fail. His tests have nothing to do with what was taught in class or even in the textbook. I have missed only three classes this semester and I can tell you it means nothing to go to class or get the textbook. His slides make sense without going and his rants in class just leave you more confused.
Where do I start.. I mean he's just awful. He tests more on participation than on actual knowledge of the material. I mean none of the test content is even in the textbook. The questions are all along the lines of "what did I say about this on this day"... like ?? Whatever you do, don't take him!
don't take haynes unless you have to. save your mental health. the class consisted of 4 quiz grades, 2 tests (midterm/final), and the OYO project. midterm was 80+ multiple choice and 10 short answer in 75 minutes, final gonna be worse (22 chapters cumulative). lectures are super boring. if you have to take him do the extra credit OYO project
For a gen-ed professor he is fairly difficult. The tests were fairly hard due to the material covered being random and not covered particularly well in class so be ready to study. He is approachable after class if you have any questions and the like. He definitely knows his stuff but the lectures are fairly boring and its easy to lose focus.
Im a senior so this is not the 1st college class I've taken, but it is by far the most difficult. I've had bad professors but never have I wanted to see a professor stop teaching as much as Dr. Haynes. Maps are the worst assignments and count for nothing. Tests are so difficult because he basically wants us to memorize entire lectures and videos.
I absolutely hated this class. The lectures are so boring and all his lectures are is him talking the whole time while on the sides are just pictures. His exams are nothing like the quizzes and both are extremely hard. He grades so hard for no reason, an outsider would think this is a class for a major with how hard it is. DON'T TAKE
HIs midterm and final are so hard. I went to him for help and he shot me down saying that since he never got study guides or internet back in his college days then we shouldn't get that same help. It seemed as though he didn't care if I succeeded or not. Do not take
long boring lectures, tests are long and overly specific to the videos and lectures. The maps are easy but take forever and are essentially useless. I took this thinking I might be more successful in this than the other classes in this cluster but I was so wrong. do not take this class if you want to keep your gpa and sanity
Haynes is just not a good choice for geology lab at all. The labs are so pointless and a waste of time. I feel like i haven't learned anything at all because he doesn't teach. The lab practicals are just so ridiculously hard for no reason and your grade is not even available on canvas. The TA's saved me in this class though so shout out to them!
I would NOT take this class for a gen ed. It is ridiculously difficult and the lectures are not helpful.
Where do I even start. The point of a Gen-ed is to be like an introduction to a major, however Haynes makes the class far too difficult for it to be that. Everybody drops the class because they fail the midterm and everyone who stays in the class fails it overall. If you're taking this class, ill pray for you.
homework maps take forever. tests and quizzes barely relate to class material. took this class as a gen ed because i wanted to avoid chemistry and physics. if you are on the fence, avoid this class at all costs
DO NOT take this class. Lectures are full of information that are spoken and not present on the slides, and hard to follow since he goes off on tangents. Your grade will mostly come from one midterm and one final exam that are made up of 60mc and 12 sa questions. They are difficult to study for, the only hope is a project and extra credit project.
Boring lectures, tedious maps that he grades harshly are part of your grade. Avoid if possible.
DO NOT TAKE. My GPA is now tanked because of this gen ed. Even if u go to class and write everything down u will still pass with a C or D. Everyone I know is close to failing and have said this is their hardest class even compared to COB classes. My time was marked by uninspiring lectures, unclear communication, and minimal engagement.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! I took Intro to Oceanography as a gen ed,(you would think it would be easy, it was not) and it was the biggest mistake. His in class lectures make no sense, the out of class assignments were lengthy and long and never corresponded to the lectures, for the sake of your mental health do not take this class.
Attendance is optional but I would recommend attending lectures. Online quizzes are fairly difficult and tests material discussed in class. Midterm and Final I got an F and somehow ended with a C overall. I would recommend doing the OYO Project and Extra Credit to pass the class. Not an "easy" gen-ed - definitely avoid.
Nice man.
DO NOT TAKE. this professor doesn't understand what Gen Ed means. I find myself studying for this class more than my major courses and still am not doing well. Graded maps that have nothing to do with anything & online quizzes are just as hard. lectures are so boring he expects u to memorize things he says for the tests. AVOID
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF. UNLESS YOU ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT GEOL.
Genuinely a nice guy outside of class, but HORRIBLE professor. Literally cannot teach. I would not recommend to my worst enemy. Don't take it if you can get around it.
Nice guy but the class is actually impossible. Not sure why he makes it that way if he knows most people are just taking it as a gen ed.
Professor Haynes is an extremely understanding and supportive teacher, just communicate with him. The class is definitely rigorous for a gen ed but it is extremely informative. I would recommend taking it, its not hard just a bit more work than expected.
Haynes is the best. While it is not the most interesting information, he is obviously into what the he is teaching. If you do the worksheets, you will do well. I would recommend him highly. And this is his last semester!!! TAke him!!!!!
If I could give 6/5, I would; Prof Haynes is very patient and tolerant, and I highly recommend going to his office hours. He keeps the class interesting with informational videos and real-life examples. 11/10 Would take again!
I would definitely recommend taking Professor Haynes's class! He is a genuine and down to earth guy and really cares about the subject matter. The lectures can be boring sometimes but are not hard! If you show up to his office hours he will go over everything with you and give you answers! This is going to be his last semester so TAKE HIM!!!!
Professor Haynes' GEO211 is a challenging gen-ed, but engaging if you stay on top of it. The lectures can be dry, but supplementing with Unstuck ai helps make studying more manageable.
Do not take him. He does not care for his students. Quizzes are only about his slide shows and pictures, which have no notes on them. You have to write down everything he says out loud in order to kind of understand what he is talking about. 99% of the time he is talking about nonsense and you can't understand him. Save yourself, don't take him
I don't like to talk badly about people nut do not take this class bro can't teach at all. slides are just yapping with no words you cant even hear him. No classwork or homework only quizzes and one project he won't look over top give you feedback on before you submit.
Im a senior and this is the worst gen ed ive taken in my life, harder than all my major classes and more work as well. I actually had a mental breakdown about this class multiple times, please save yourself and do not take him.
This was an awful gen-ed, he rambles on about random things but those things are whats on the quizzes and exams. The class is rough, but the exams are worse. This class ended up being taken over by a different professor after winter break, and at that point I had hope for my grade but it still couldnt fix Professor Haynes heinous work.
