I cannot hear him from the third row of the classroom. His notes are unclear he writes all over the board in no specific order. When he is talking he just will divert into mumbling and going off on random tangents that do not matter.
You could not hear him very well, I'd suggest moving to the front row. He is very willing to help you, answer questions, and work through key concepts with you. Nice person, just he whispers when lecturing.
The first week or so is spent reviewing the chemistry basics, so brush up if you don't already know them. The exams can be tough and his explanations are sometimes muddy, so watch Youtube videos if you need some help. The textbook is too confusing to learn from. But, he's incredibly helpful if you talk to him during office hours or after class.
Tests are a little hard, but not bad if you study a lot.
He is pretty decent at explaining tough material, but his grading is very tough to understand. He didn't have a blackboard setup for my class, and didn't always hand our assignments back. I had no idea what my grade was until it was posted to campus connection at the end of the semester. Sometimes he will ramble on and get super of track.
I'm not super good when it comes to chemistry so this class was literally the hardest class I've taken. He doesn't explain things well and he jumps into new things without explaining how or why. Nice guy but not a good teacher at all. Don't have him if chemistry isn't your strong suit.
-goes off on random tangents of more complex topics that confuse you even more -says "quivel" 10x per day -makes an average of 3-5 mistakes on problem set solutions that are supposed to help you -gives no hw, attendance, extra credit, projects, nothingfour exams and a final, thats it, oh! and exams are 20q.100pts. so two wrongB -Prayers needed*
John is awesome and knows what he's talking about. Sometimes his lectures can be a bit dry, but he makes some hilarious comments during class to keep you engaged. All the notes are on Blackboard, so print them out beforehand. You don't need to go to every lecture to get an A. Also, the homework problems he gives you are very similar to test ones.
He is awful at explaining material. The questions on the test are super confusing, he doesn't just ask a normal question. He told students he was trying to trick them on tests. Puts questions on tests that he knows no one will get right.
Professor Hershberger was useless. All he does in class is read off a bunch of powerpoint slides. He doesn't actually teach. Then he goes through the slides so fast in class, you can't finish taking notes. The only good thing is that he posts all of the notes online.
His class is based on memorization versus learning concepts. Make sure you memorize how to do every one of the homework questions, as they will show up on the tests. Textbook is not very helpful and he does not teach from it. His class is only graded on tests and homework so I suggest putting real effort into the homework. Sit near the front!
Although attendance isnt required I highly recommend going. He can be funny at times, but his lectures do get to be long and boring. Definitely one of the harder classes I have taken.
This is a tough class... he gives no homework and has 5 test including the final throughout the semester. He will drop your lowest test score (not the final test).
He reads and bases his lectures off of chapter summaries and doesnt usually give equations, instead he only uses example problems and expects the class to know how to do them within one problem. It is pathetic to think that a 65% class average on an exam is considered a good average. This just shows how bad of a professor he is.
His lectures are very difficult to follow. He just rambles and then does a practice example without explaining why or when to use it. If you skip the class you will not pass because his practice exams are pointless to study off of. The average for most exams are 55-60% anything above a 60% he considers a good exam.
Professor Hershberger seems to be a great guy in general. However, this class is absolutely brutal. The averages on tests are high 50's and there are 5 tests, which the lowest score gets dropped. You may as well not go to class and take advantage of his slides posted online as well of practice tests. If you care about your GPA, try a different prof
Professor Hershberger doesn't teach, he reads off his notes for the class for 50 minutes straight while you try to take notes and not fall behind. You're graded on 4 tests and final exam, and when the class average for the tests are 70% or less, he simply doesn't care. If you want to get an A in chemistry, don't take his class.
He seems like a great guy, just a hard class. Only points come from exams, and they are tough. He isnt the best at explaining things, just does examples and then expects you to know how to do the problems. His lectures also get boring.
Class of all lectures and tests but he explains the topic of chemistry very well. The order of his teaching was a bit different as we learned bonding at the end of the semester but his thorough lectures and recommended homework got me through this class!!!
This professor is fine if you want a lecture only class on math topics. He has practice tests you can do but they don't help. It is super hard to learn a math based class when the whole class is only lecture. If you are good at learning by listening, this class will be okay. If you are a person who has to do examples hands on, I do not recommend.
Most entertaining part of his class was when I ate a cayenne pepper in the middle of it.
Very difficult class, math heavy. Cant tell the difference between this class and my math class. 4 exams and a final (drops lowest exam), very difficult exams that average D-F, and only go down as the semester goes on. It is a very boring lecture and he expects you to learn when he makes many mistakes. Worst class I have has so far.
Tends to ramble but explains what you have to do to get a good grade, lots of kids don't listen to his lectures or do the extra problems then get upset they don't do well on his tests. He provides a decent syllabus with easy to follow guidelines and the dates all laid out. He gives non-mandatory homework which helps a lot on the tests.
Grades are based solely on 4 exams and the final. His lectures are boring even though he seems like a nice guy. He doesn't do many in class examples as he expects you, but does not require you, to do practice problems after each chapter. You will struggle if you don't grasp lecture content. Least favorite class. DON'T WASTE MONEY ON THE BOOK.
The environment of the class is not engaging whatsoever. There are 4 midterms and 1 final that are the ONLY counted upon in the grade book. The midterms consist of 25 questions that are worth 4 points, so just a few questions wrong and you're down to a C. The practice tests that are available online do not match any of the questions on the midterms
It is not worth going to class, very boring lecturer, didn't learn much from it. Tests are very difficult but practice problems he supplies help. The grade is solely on tests (which are open notes) and the final, but he does drop your lowest score. Honestly you're better off using the notes and practice problems given and study on your own.
Class is 4 exams and a final. No HW, so it's on you to practice. He reads off slides and gives some examples as the lecture, but I wouldn't skip. First class I have ever struggled to stay awake in. The book's practice problems were my best friend. DO PRACTICE PROBLEMS!!! I don't think I would have done well without having the book for backup.
I took CHEM121 with Hershberger and he was... okay? I guess? Your entire grade is based on 4 midterms (lowest is dropped) and your final, all the exams are all online timed. If you ARE going to skip still do the notes and practice problems he provides, sometimes he pulls questions from the practice exams so take advantage of them.
Hershberger lives up to most of the ratings, but if you put in work, you can get a good grade. The grade is based solely on exams, and the lectures will put you to sleep if you're tired. I recommend printing his chapter summaries and using those in class. Also utilize his office hours and practice problems because it will help a lot on exams.
Hershberger is a terrible teacher. His lectures aren't helpful and will put you to sleep. Honestly, you would be better off reading the textbook and teaching the material to yourself plus then you won't be wasting 3 hours of your life every week.
I went to his class once, got an A. I am a B-average student. Don't bother to show up to class unless you have the intellect of a brick, and if you do, prepare to be bored to death while he talks about unrelated topics.
Miserable. Never take Hershberger unless you HAVE to. Doesn't grade anything except tests. Want to cheat on those? Good luck, you won't be able to. Very difficult class to grasp on to unless you've been exposed to chemistry before. Do not take Hershberger...
Don't take this class. Find a different professor cause this one sucks. He only uses test grades and they are hard test. doesn't give a lot of time to the tests. No making up exams. No extra credit. He reads off these notes that he has and he doesn't explain them well. FIND FRIENDS IN THIS CLASS. Take the tests together. It will help you pass.
His class is all lectures and he just goes over the chapter summaries that he post's online. The class is only graded on 4-5 exams and the lowest one is dropped. The test are open book and online. If you don't understand chemistry, it will be more difficult since he just says what's off the slides and doesn't explain in detail the meanings.
Talks poorly and mumbles constantly. Lacks the ability to make much sense at all or actually teach the subject properly. Exams relate to nothing taught in class.
Literally payed to teach myself, still he is better than the other Chem 121 teachers though. Also get chegg
Literally reads directly off the notes he is the best Chem 121 teacher sadly. Tips to pass class: 1) get chegg 2) your better off watching YouTube videos on the given topic 3) find a solid group of people in that class 4) go to ace 5) if ace offers a Chem study group DO IT Im literally begging them rn to let me in one. 6) get chegg not kidding!!!
Stop being an introvert and talk to people in the class, get a good group of people and take the test together cause its online, dont need to go to lecture every time, only grades the tests, tests are open book too
Taught myself with YouTube.
1 on 1 he's a good teacher and explains stuff well, that being said his lectures are the biggest waste of time on this planet. His monotone voice puts you to sleep and he just reads word for word off his chapter summary. Your entire grade is based off 3 midterms and a final. You will not pass if you don't work on test with others or go to the tutor
find a group of friends and take it with them I ended up with an 89% in the class and i emailed him about it seeing if their was a way for me to get an A and he responded solely with telling me that he wont have the final grades till fFiday. so instead of an A(90%) I got a B(80%).
This was the worst class I have ever taken. I fell asleep in most lectures and learned absolutely nothing. The only way I passed was with help from a friend who I would take the test with. don't bother getting the book. I opened it 2 times though the whole semester. FIND FRIENDS or you wont pass. Also have I mentioned his lectures are so boring
don't recommend
Only points in the class are test points: 4 midterms and 1 final (drops lowest). Tests are in person now whereas in previous semesters were all online (class averages were always near 50%). His teaching method is awful. Reads his own slides in a monotone voice that will put you to sleep and you will have to teach yourself everything in his class.
He is a hard professor to follow in class, could not really understand what he was sometimes saying. Also, in class, when he taught, it was hard to follow what he was teaching throughout the class. Tests are super hard; most of the time, the test has nothing relative to what he goes over in class. The class is a lot of self-taught.
Dr. Hershberger only puts tests in the gradebook, no homework or extra credit. He reads his chapter summaries to you in class, and that is the extent of his teaching. There are homework problems available to do, but they are not graded. This is a course where you will need to teach yourself out of the textbook.
If you can find a different professor, do so. The class average with his useless lectures is 55%. You will have to study double the class times to understand what he failed to teach you.
I have spent hours in tutoring to try and teach myself what Hershberger failed to explain in his boring, monotone lectures. The test are very challenging, even if you review the problem sets (study guide) head to toe. Terrible class, If you have to take it, do it with a professor that isn't Hershberger.
If you struggle with insomnia, this is the perfect class for you. His voice will make you fall asleep.
Hersch was about as bad as it gets, horrible and uninformative lectures combined with only being graded on exams. His problem sets are also not helpful whatsoever, good luck if you decide to take him. You're better off watching videos and trying to teach yourself and even then you might be screwed.
Likes to get off track a lot and is very hard to follow.
If you have another option, take it. If not, be ready to read and teach yourself, use as many outside resources as you can. Lectures aren't very helpful and he ready through chapter summaries. Grade is only based on exam, no homework, no extra credit.
hard tests and you do not learn anything from his lectures. Do not take.
Hershy squirts was a great guy. he was very good background noise for playing CS:GO.
seriously the worst teacher i've ever had. good luck doing well on the exams which are worth 100% of your grade.
Good luck with him. His lectures are boring and useless, he gives out no homework and your grade only comes from the exams and final. Most people skip class and just read through the notes and watch youtube videos on the subject, find friends to take the test with.
His lectures are pointless. He is terrible at describing topics and actually teaching. You learn absolutely nothing from him and have to teach yourself everything. I had to take my own notes and read the book in order to survive. It takes a lot of time to teach yourself and overall this class sucks to deal with.
Read the textbook it explains things better than he does
His classes are great if you have trouble falling asleep.
Rambles and doesn't teach anything. Hard to learn
This class is only grades by tests. There are 4 midterm exams worth 100 points and 1 final worth 200 points. He drops your lowest midterm meaning your cumulative final is worth a large chunk of your grade. His tests are incredibly difficult, and his lectures are difficult to learn from. Do not take this class. Good luck.
I probably learned nothing from Hershes class. I did a lot of online shopping. Good class for napping.
Teacher was not helpful at all. After meeting in person to go over exam scores was not helped to understand any subject materials struggled upon.
He is a great professor shame on you students for making fun of an old man you guys are just lazy I focused in his class and got an A
Great amazing teacher
very lazy professor and clearly does not care
only reads a word doc during lectures
He has a monotone voice. He knows chemistry but as a teacher isn't very good, he often rambles on something that isn't worth taking notes. In the lecture he uses a word doc. and reads off of those notes, which is available on blackboard, that helps, but I later found myself skipping and copying those notes down, and then watching YouTube videos.
worse professor I've ever come across, not sure how he is still teaching at this school,
If you are a freshman freaking out about how you're stuck with Hersh: THIS CLASS SUCKS BUT IS PASSABLE. Only graded off exams but drops the worst one. Memorize the study guides he gives you as all the questions come off of them in some way. Honestly, lectures are optional as long as you're keeping up with the class. Good luck soldiers.
Had three tests throughout the year for and a fina, no homework. Talks word for word off of powerpoint presentations that he made probably years ago. Everytime I was looking around the lecture hall there were at least a dozen students falling asleep. One good thing is attendance isn't mandatory, but regardless you will be teaching yourself.
i wake up at night in terror, thinking i am back in his class. you're never too young for vietnam flashbacks.
there's a way to succeed, in the same way that there is probably a way to throw a bowl of soup in the air without spilling it. congrats to the 2 people on here defending hershey's name, absolutely no one else was having a good time. i enjoy chemistry, which is something i was forced to reevaluate while in hershey's class.
Terrible professor. I learned much more from high school chem. Tests are 100% of grade. Majority of students skip every lecture and cheat on tests. I dont blame them, it is impossible to learn a single thing from Hershberger.
Horrible professor. Speeds through lectures, tests are extremely twisted from what we are taught, only grades tests, offered zero extra credit or other point opportunities.
Our first four tests throughout the semester are worth 60% of our grade. The final alone, is worth the rest. Not only the grading criteria is bad, the professor rambles and is excruciating to try and follow during lectures. If you get stuck taking this class, read the online textbook and teach yourself, his lectures definitely won't.
This professor gave the most difficult lectures to listen to that I have ever heard. It was nearly impossible to tell what the important parts actually were. This was my only grade lower than an A despite being able to proficiently do all the study guides and other problem sets. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR!!!
Teacher is a nice guy, just prepare to rely on the textbook, he doesn't really teach
All exam course, very terrible and boring lectures. Not worth going to class if you go with him. Just use the book
Got a front row seat at what I thought was a guest speaker from a non verbal country. Turns out it's just how John teaches. Bro didn't explain anything the entire time. Started bringing my dog to class and pinching his nuts to make him bark just so John would wake up. Half the time after waking he decks the girl in the front row with his key board.
Grades only on exams and nothing else making it hard to improve your grade if your bad at exams
Horrible. Avoid at ALL COSTS. Lectures mumble chapter summaries and off-topic tangents. Read the book, go to tutoring, watch YT videos. 4 tests (lowest drops) and 1 final! No hw or attendance! Practice materials DON'T match the tests at all! Study almost entirely qualitative! This class was a nightmare. Class averages are 50-60 consistently! AVOID!
I try to get hit by cars on the way to class.
-10/10 would NOT recommend. He mumbles through lectures and doesn't explain anything. He gives practice problems, but they don't match the exam at all. I had to teach myself the material through the textbook (which is so expensive) and online videos. If you have him, try not to fall asleep during class. GOOD LUCK.
TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lectures are so boring. None of the practice for exams match. AVOID AVOID AVOID
Worst ever. Does not teach anything and gives examples not even on the tests that make up the entire grade.
No homework whatsoever. Only test based, lowest test score is dropped and graded on a curve. However, very boring lectures, you will end up not going to them and have to teach yourself the entire course.
The only things that are graded in this course are the tests. His tests are all closed note, closed book. The other chemistry professors allow notes and resources on their exams. The only pro is that there is no homework, but then again there's nothing to cushion test grades. His lectures are very boring and do not help with learning content.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! I read the other reviews, and I said it couldn't really be this bad. I'm writing this as I am supposed to be studying for the final. I will be lucky to get a C in this class. He is the type of person to wants to be the smartest in the room, so he will do everything to get you to fail. Basically taught myself everything
