Mr. Hess is very helpful and very nice. He sometimes is a little unclear about what he wants you to write for your papers, but if you ask him, he will clarify everything.
Prof. Hess is a really good teacher. He knows what he is talking about and he gives you the option to pick any essay topic (just run it by him first). I highly recommend this teacher.
Professor Hess was a very good instructor. He was very lenient on me about when papers were due and if I asked he would let me email them to him late. He also made sure I passed my English58 exam or he appealed it. He was very encouraging and joked with us in class.
Excellent teacher. He explains exactly what he wants and how he wants it. Extremely easy and fun class. He is very helpful.
Great teacher all around.
He's a great instructor. He would help you anytime when he has his office hour. He's awesome.
great english professor!
awesome teacher anyone who has to take 102 or 300 should take him
He's the best! I never realized that I had the ability to analyze things. He's great! I highly recommend any one going to English 300 to take him. Very upsset though when i found out he's not teaching English 1B, i seriously wanted him to be my teacher!
I took two classes from this teacher, because I liked him so much. Professor Hess wants everyone to do well and is very encouraging. Hess will open up you mind to so many new topics and will get you to analyze them from your own viewpoint and others, he makes writing a paper fun. He is truly a great teacher, one of a kind.
GREAT TEACHER, FAIR GRADER, AND GREAT PERSONALITY.
Mr. Hess is thoughtful and kind, not to mention very intelligent. He is open to new ideas and sensitive to the needs of his students. I took his English 1B class several semesters ago and I was very impressed with him.
Mr.Hess is a great english teacher. He always there to help. If it wasn't for him my writing skills would still be pretty bad.
An excellent and very helpful teacher.
He's an awsome teacher and makes class fun, even if you dont like english, you will still have a high grade, just turn everything assigned in and dont be afraid to speak up in class. dont stress this class it's a breeze.
He is not very helpful and he doesnt explain what he wants on essays very well, does not like essays topics that are "over used", if your not into politics DONT take this class. He is nice though and is not very strick about turning things in on time.
Good teacher
reccomend u alllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
Good guy, kind of boring but a good teacher to have for english.
he is very understanding and really wants to help. he likes politics so if you like to argue w/a teacher you should take him. but really he is a great teacher thats why i took him for 102 and 300. hess rocks
The best teacher i have had. He lets you revise the essays. Very understanding and easy going teacher. I got an A in his class. I highly recommend him.
he is a pretty good professor. his class is pretty simple and not that challenging. just do the work. the only thing that was off putting was his political veiws and how he had to bring them up evey day in class. he made it feel like a pols class. he needs to focus on teaching writing and not TRYING to convince liberals are better.(and they are not
NOT recommended. Strong religious n political bias. He should teach world religions and and anti-american politics..I did not learn to write better, all I learned were teacher n student political views n why..nothing to do w/ English. If u take him, u won't learn English..not consistent in his reasoning, not fair in his arguments/ or resources.
Great teacher! It is always hard work to write essays, especially for a student whose English is a second language, but with such professor you begin to like writing in English. I would recommend Mr. Hess to everyone because he is a very helpful and good teacher!
very nice teacher. and easy
WOW BEST TEACHER EVER. TAKE THIS CLASS. EASY A
UGH! I HATED this class! Mr. Hess is so unclear with what he wants with his assignments in every aspect. He then does not hesitate to call you out on not doing what he wants in front of the whole class. He is boring and so is the subject matter.
Wow I hated this class. The teacher was really nice, at times, and it was easy; however, we never really did anything. And the whole second part of the class was based on group work and group presentations. Not well taught...
Great Teacher! He cares about your success. You just have to want to succeed.
Mr. Hess is a good teacher, very helpfull, wants everyone to succeed. He doesn't give a specific topic for essays so you have the freedom to choose what to write about which is great. I don't agree he is biased because he shows both viewpoints on many arguments. This class was made me aware of the global issues today, thats why you should take it!
GREAT TEACHER HE REALLY WANTS THE STUDENTS TO SUCCEED ALSO HE WAS VERY HELPFUL!!
Professor Hess was a wonderful teacher. We wrote essays and we had very interesting topics. They have to do with the global issues which we are having today which is very educational for all the students. He is very nice and very easy to talk to if you have any questions. he was such a great teacher that im taking his EngWr 301 next semester.
GREAT TEACHER! Very easy two page papers. You pretty much pick the topic. He lets you make changes to your essay and turn it in the end of the semester for a higher score. I'm horrible at writting essays and I got a B! Very easy and nice.
Good teacher! I dislike english and I got an A. The writting topics are interesting but do get political. Very helpful.
ok, so yeah, he's a nice teacher and everything, but if you love english and/or are an amazing writer, i would avoid him. and he brings up race and ethnicity way too much. like...all the time basically. and he doesn't pick works from western authors, which might sound like a good idea, but its not. western literature is the light of the world.
He is one of the best teachers I have had yet. He really wants you to pass and he is extremely helpful!
How 'pro-Amerian' is it to belittle someone else's opinions and ideas as substitute for not having some of your own? I found professor Hess to be highly considerate, tolorant and knowlagable. I'd love to take another of his classes.
I didn't like english, he made it fun and easy. Just show up to class and do 5 essays for the year and that's about it.
Professor Hess was one of my best teachers i've ever had. Glad that i took his class and everybody else should take him as well. He teaches very well and i never liked English until i took his class. Awesome Teacher!
John Hess is a magnificent guy; he's knowledgeable, he speaks extremely well. He's a great teacher; patient and understanding. I came out of this classes with more than I expected I would. His essay due dates are basically rough draft due dates, so you have a lot of time to fix your essays;revise revise revise. He's an Easy A. Highly Recommended.
Great Teacher! Creates an interesting course by introducing/highlighting some social problems of the world. Not your typical "boring enlgish course"---THANKFULLY!!! He's not ANTI-AMERICAN, he's simply aware of our current global problems and the lack responsibility our government has shown. I'd take a class taught by Hess ANYTIME!!
The best of the best. I had a bad experience with English prof in the past because he didn't appreciate my unique writing style. PROF HESS DID. He allowed me to be ME in my writing. He is amazing. Always helpful and honest. He made me believe in myself and in my writing. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
I think he's a fair guy.
Pro. Hess was one of the best teachers that I have ever had. He was very approachable, and he dedicates all of his time to the success of his students. Take this class You won't regret it.
Professor Hess is very nice and understanding. He always has time for his students, whether it is before class or after. He is somewhat into politics, but it's not as if it were a Political Science class as some people have said in earlier reviews. The only thing I would change is the unnecessary rambling that goes on for longer than it should.-Liz
Mr. Hess is an excellent teacher, thoughtful and analytical, he is interested in hearing what students think about the reading regardless of whether or not he agrees. I felt learned more about thinking critically in this class than I did about writing more effectively, but it was a treat to have a class where I felt free to just enjoy learning.

Professor Hess was an ok teacher. The mythology class was far from what I expected. I expected to learn about myths from all over the world. We only touched on other myths and stuck to 4 main books. I learned something from them but not what I wanted. Also the discussion (which is what the whole class was) always ended up about his faith.
Hess is the bessssst.. Great teacher who is willing to help you learn. He's very cool and chill. He isn't crap like some other English teachers at Arc..
Awesome teacher passion and genuinely cares to teach his subject. He is no push over but at the same time he wants you to succeed unlike some professor who could care less.
outstanding teacher. caring. thoughtful. helpful. those who don't like to speak up in class, he will ask you questions. attendance is important.
Hess is the best engwr teacher ever, he is very helpful, thoughtful, gives us interesting things to write about and dosent push any of his own bias on us, will always help you with revisions if u come see him durng office hour and also makes you think in ways you wouldnt before he is obviously doing what he loves overall one of the best teachers
Great professor! Provides lots of info. which aids with the writing of essay assignments. He gets you involved in class discussions which helps u piece essays together-just take notes, pay attention and stay involved & you'll do great. If u have questions never hesitate to ask him;just find out his office schedule &/or email. He'll always respond
This is the best English teacher ever.... He is easy grader, and most of the response papers that we wrote were our opinions. I would take him again for sure... too bad I am not at ARC anymore.
Overall great, very nice, always entertaining, ad an easy class but still ale to learn more than anticipated.
the best teacher ever, thank go i had him my first semester, and will be taking him next semester as well. i dont think ive any other teacher as good to clarifiaction of what is expected, and is very VERY understanding. =]
TAKE HIM, CLEAR AND COOL. SIMPLE AS THAT. HE IS THE BEST. WISH HIS CLASSES WHERE AT A TIME THAT I NEED. VERY HELPFUL AND CONSIDERATE.
Hess is great. Take Him for ENGWR 301, but prepared to want to earn a good grade!
I took Pro. Hess for EngWr 102. He is such a great teacher. I highly recommend people take him. I really liked that he let me be myself when writing the essays. In fact, he encouraged us to be ourselves. He is always there for his students if they need help with anything. Take this Professor, you wont regret it!
I took professor Hess for Mythologies of the world and absolutely loved his class! He is a great teacher and genuinely cares for his students. He does expect college level work, a good attitude, and good attendance. His class is full of good energy and humor. Highly recommend him for any English class!
If you like slacking off this teacher would be a good teacher to take... Immature class structure teacher throwing items to get student attention not COOL
Mr. Hess is an easy going and helpful teacher. Some of the topics we talk about were sometimes boring but he got his point across.
He's a nice professor and easy going.
Mr. Hess is a great teacher. Perfect for what 102 ask's for, a teacher who isnt going to rip you on every little thing but he looks at the overall. It really encourages those who might not love to write, to become better writers. I am looking forward to 300 with him!!!
This professor is awesome he wants his students to succeed and is willing to help you out on achieving a good grade, is always there for his students during office hours. he rocks
This teacher assigns lots of homework online and does not bother himself to teach his class with passion and enthusiasm. We had to write 4 essays, each 1200 words, including works cited page.He will not tolerate plagiarism because he uses turnitin.com.Overall, he is very boring and unmotivated.
He's a decent guy, but as a teacher he has too many flaws. His syllabus is all wrong so he didn't go by it from the beginning, but then without warning tells everyone something is due the day of. Only 2 people turned it in and thinks the fault is in the students. He makes a dropbox the same day and sometimes forgets to make them. He's unorganized.
Pay attention in class for modifications to a syllabi which is in alignment with where the course is headed! He is an awesome instructor who TEACHES material and has availability, student/teacher interactions and knowledge about what's going on in the world!
One of the hardest classes I have taken. He does not just expect you to write well like the other instructors, he expects you to think philosophically and have intimate knowledge about large world topics like: sex trafficking, FGM, blood coffee, etc. I would not recommend this class if you want anything better then a low 80.
Professor Hess deserves a medal for being such a great teacher! He is very dedicated to his students and cares about them absorbing the material. He is laid back and a very nice person! He is interesting and makes the literature interesting. Most importantly, he allows for others to ENJOY the literature. I wish there were more professors like him!
Professor Hess encourages the class to be open and be aware of women's rights and global issues such as human/sex trafficking, prostitution, and other human rights violations. Half the Sky & Ruined were 2 required books that were insightful. Four required essays (100 pts each). Lots of writing required (6000+ words). Highly recommend teacher. :)
He was sort of flaky, graded slowly throughout most of the semester, but not hard. Good professor; engaging, quirky, funny, interesting. The material he selected was overall enjoyable, his thoughts on them were stimulating and he'd never shoot down interpretations that differed from his own. Lots of material to cover. Would take him again.
He doesn't just teach you what each culture thought to be true, he has you question the reasoning behind their beliefes. This is not a class that you just drop a book report into a folder, it is the type of class that you understand the historical context of the people that wrote the book due to great lectures.
He is a good teacher very clear. The real homework was 3 essays and they were easy. He has a few summaries every here and there, but all and all easy class as long as you actually try.
I probably wouldn't take another class with him.
He has assistants teaching class He does not want to explain anything He is a tough grader and throws you out there and makes you write when you don't know what you are doing I don't recommend him for beggining writers
Professor Hess is very inspirational. He teaches morals and wishes to influence his students of how to better themselves in order to better the world. He is extremely thorough in what he expects in every assignment. Participation in discussion is appreciated. He respects his students and their opinions. BEST TEACHER EVER!!! And very funny. :)
I had two class with this teacher he is the best.
i had Engw 50 with him he is the best
He's not a great teacher. See, he just up and dumps you into the materal and expects say, a freshman, to just understand everything about writing in an instant. He also just clusters his students together for no real reason other than he just doesn't help the students individually. I would not recommend you take him first year. Ever.
Super awesome professor. 3 essays which take a lot of work. As long as you answer the question and follow the guidelines you will pass. 5 reading assignments which are easy and require opinion about an article. 5 response papers, which are the exact same as the reading, your opinion in a page or two. As long as you do the work, you will pass.
Prof. Hess motivates his students to volunteer and get involved in the community. However, it's not a requirement in his class to do so. There are 3 essays and many responses that you have to do each week. He is not a tough grader. He cares much on the content of your writing. The more you are engaged in class, the better your essays will be.
He's really disorganized and tends to forget what is due and will assign things early when in class he said he would assign them a week later. His passion for English is there but he is not the best at teaching it.
He is a good professor, laid back & pretty helpful. Gives Extra credit. You'll have homework every week, but it's manageable. I wish he was taking Eng 300, because I would definitely take his class again. A bit unorganized with things he wants done for homework, but he gives a lot of time to get it done. Do the homework&the 3 essays & you'll pass.
Professor Hess is absolutely incredible! He is so passionate about literature and wants all his students to succeed! I highly recommend him for any English Lit. course!
Lots of homework but totally worth it!!!! You'll pass if you do as told. He's an amazing teacher and truly takes his job serious!! Very passionate English teacher!!! Recommend.
Very unorganized, but can be an easy "A" if you sit through it patiently you'll pass the class.
Man, Professor Hess is really cool! He's laid back and he cares of his students. I really liked him. I'm definitely going to try to take him again! Oh, and there's this one lady that her name is Lidia and it's his helper I don't know if she's always there, but she is awesome as well!
Lot's of reading and writing, He wants you to succeed. If you pay attention and enjoy a straight forward prof that is down to earth and seems to like his career because he cares, He's it. Not going to breeze through but if you work it will pay off in the end. He likes to laugh. likes to get shy people to open up. doesn't sensor your thoughts.
Hess is a great professor but 301 is pretty challenging. 4 essays, 5 RA's, 5 RP's, everyday readings. Will change the syllabus a lot so don't rely on it. Gives good feedback. Essays are challenging, but as long as you get them done you will receive a decent grade. He gives really good feedback, and strongly encourages his office hour as well as WAC
He has a great personality
Very fun class, just can be slow on grading
I have never been so bored in a class. Lectures were dull it was basically a recap of whatever was up on the projector. I only showed up a few times and did fairly well. If you want an easy A, this is the class. If you want to learn and have a challenge pick a different professor. Grade is based on a few short essay quizzes and a midterm/final pape
Professor Hess is very funny and makes class enjoyable. His class is very straight forward but he does assign a lot of reading and reading responses as homework. Other then that, besides some essays, there isn't much other work. Its an easy A if you do the reading and the class discussions are fun. Would totally take again.
Professor Hess is amazing at what he does. He is very clear about his essays which is easy when it comes to writing. 3 essays total, and a couple of response papers. Read your book and listen to his lecture and there is no reason why you should not get an A.
His class was simple and straightforward, but he was extremely disorganized. It's the same thing every class, listening to him talk. Teach yourself, do the work, and get an easy A.
Hess is an amazing professor. He brings controversial topics to class and has you discuss them. It makes the class feel more connected. His lectures sometimes drag on and he can be disorganized, but he is very passionate. Basically, if you follow the prompts, you'll get a high B or A. Few small assignments but nothing hard. 10/10 recommend!
John Hess is a very understanding and amazing Professor he was very helpful when it came to me not quite understanding the essay prompt. He would tell me what it is i need to improve on. He's a funny guy ! I would recommend him to anyone you won't regret it!!
Prof. Hess was the best. He has super interesting topics and discussions and does not require a textbook. He is very understanding and likes to hear every students voice. Easily the best English class I have ever taken! Don't miss out on his class!
By far the best English professor I've ever had. His classroom has a welcoming environment and he has the best discussions about race, gender, and inequality. There are a lot of response papers but they help build the main idea for essays. 3 essays and you get to peer review before submitting. Overall, I highly recommend and this was a fun class.
Professor Hess was a great professor, he is very laid back. If you want an easy class that will get you an A take his. Just stay on top of your HW.
You will needed to read the books to pass, very easy on grading. Loves to interact with his class. Does lecture a good amount but that's unavoidable. Stories are actually interesting if you read them. Really good guy, would definitely take again. Test on each book, a midterm, and a Final. Final is worth 200 pts, all quizzes are 2o and mid is 50.
Nice professor. Cares about students. Horrible topics to write about. Way to complex for engwr 300. Show up write a crappy paper and you will still get an A.
Professor Hess is an amazing person. A true gem. I loved being in his class. Hes very kind and caring. The topics he used were really relevant in this time. I really wanted to take his 302 class but I couldnt for some reason. I will always miss his class. This class made me a good writer and a better human being. Thank you professor Hess.
John is the worst. He talks way to much, he runs around in circles when he speak. He give grades at the end of the year so you don't know how you are doing in his class. I will never take his writing 300+ or any class he offers ever again.
John Hess is the worst professor I ever been with. He talked too much and but forget about the main point, another thing is he is grading at the end of semester you will never know what where you at. I highly recommend you guys not to take class with him.
Professor Hess is the best professor I have ever had. He has inspired and movitated me when I needed it the most. He fought very hard to get me switched from ENGWR 94/300 combo to his ENGWR 480 Honors class. He went out of his way to talk to the dean to appeal. He is AMAZING and his lectures are impeccable! Highly recommend his class!
Professor Hess was by far one of the best Professor's I've had! It is a pretty heavy class and you won't be given a letter grade until the semester is over BUT he will definitely work with you to get the grade you want. Makes sure every individual in class is understanding the concept and essay topics were very interesting! Totally recommend!
Hes amazing teacher he actually trys to help you and tells you and shows you . Hes very understanding if you happen to miss an assignment he gives you a chance to make it up . This is my first college class and I hope the rest of my teachers are gunna be like him !!
I do not Know how i passed his class because even i do not believe i made it and got a B. In four months the students did not know what this professor was teaching or what he was talking about. If you want to learn do not take him because you will not learn anything. But if you want to pass without learning than take him. Good Luck
I would of give him rate of 5 but there was a few thing I dislike about his class. If you disagree with him he'll put you in blast in front of class or on his lectures videos , he is not as proficient teaching online since he assigns weird due dates and times, I took WAC had my essays reviewed and still got only 85-90% of possible points.
If you like science this is the class for you. The whole semester all we did was essays on science nothing else. His instructions were horrible. He was always making mistakes that I then had to ask about. I wouldn't take his class.
Professor Hess is a very nice teacher and I love his energy and personality. It's awesome! The only thing that I do not like that he did was he didn't communicate with me that I was not doing well on essays 1 and 2 and he gave me a D at the end of the semester. He should have told me what I was doing wrong and I would have fixed it.
This is one of the classes that you are doing a quite a bit of work. We had 4 essays to do which were pretty intense. We also had to read 2 books on top of other assignments. But he gave us a lot of help and support a long the way! It was very easy to get a hold of him via email/ zoom. He really wants you to succeed in his class, I learned a lot!
I had professor Hess for a 4 week course in summer 2021 hes a tough grader for sure, but gives great feedback with his grades. We read a book, and most the assignments and papers were in correlation to the book. I definitely think he cares about the success of his students and their writing. Prompt replies to emails as well.
Great professor. Usually 3-4 assignments per week. Very manageable. A lot of writing and reading. You are going to read a book and then have a quiz at the end. So basically, discussion boards, essays, and 1 quiz.
He dropped me from his class and gave me no reason as to why. Emailed him and gives me an unprofessional response.
Took his 6-week summer course. Very fast, but so worth it. 2 discussion boards a week, 3 essays for the semester. Very manageable. Lenient grader, very accessible for questions. Provides GREAT feedback on every assignment. Must read a book, but it is enjoyable. He encourages you to think and learn to use AI as a learning tool.
Honestly, I loved his class. He allowed our writing to reflect our own voices rather than his. He allowed our works to be written and judged from an unbiased view. He was extremely open to topics and writing styles. He's really good and making you think outside the box. he choose great reading material and it was a great experience.
What you would expect from an English class with the essays and writing, but his personality made it more fun and he was lenient with certain things so there wasn't as much pressure.
One of the main issues I encountered in this course was the professor's grading approach. It often seemed that he expected students to go above and beyond the assignment requirements. While it's not uncommon for professors to appreciate additional effort, this professor's expectations sometimes felt unclear and even unrealistic.
Good amount of workload however work was fairly easy and the professor was a pretty lenient grader. You are required to purchase and read books for this class however but the content was easy to comprehend and the reading wasn't too dense. You'll get an A as long as you stay on top of your work in this class
Overall This Professor is alright. Not my first choice but not bad. He takes forever to grade Assignments. This class was very laid back. All research for assignments were through online websites. If you do the assignments its an easy A, topics for essays were interesting to write on and easy to find sources for. Overall easy class.
Prof. Hess is an overall pretty good professor. His class is on the easier side with 3 big papers throughout the semester. I took in person, and at times attendance felt very unnecessary, almost a waste of time as I could just do everything from home. He also yaps a lot, but it's usually pretty interesting.
Prof. Hess is a pretty good professor overall. His class is on the easier side, though attendance can feel unnecessary at times. Definitely use resources like unstuck ai and the free textbook to succeed - they really helped me stay on top of the 3 big papers.
