Dr. Hickamn is a great professor, I have had him twice and have learned so much just in those two classes. He is one of the reasons I became a Government major! :) Plus he lets me play putt putt in his office
Hickman is the greatest professor in the world. His films are always high class and have an amazing lack of sexual content. Not to mention the fact that he is hot.
Dr. Hickman is the twinkle in my eye... Dr. Hickman is the powdered sugar on my donuts...Dr. Hickman is the sweet in my tea...Dr. Hickman is the caffeine in my coffee...oh, and woohoo government classes!!
Dr. Hickman is a great professor! He challenges people to really think about things (he especially likes to play devil's advocate )! He makes classes really interesting and fun... He made me want to change my major to gov't! I very highly recommend him!

Dr. Hickman knows a lot about how things are in the world; though at times his analysis is clouded with a certain brand of irrational liberalism. I'm not a conservative per se, I just think one should apply a decent amout of logic to one's opinions.
Dr. Hickman is a wonderful professor! One of the very best at Berry!!! He'll also let you play minigolf in his office. I recommend him for any class!!!!
Dr. Hickman is incredibly intelligent and has great wit. His lectures are funny and humorous; I've quoted him many times. He's fun and fair, a good teacher, and very knowledgable about world politics.
Dr. Hickman is awesome! By far my favorite professor at Berry college! His classes are interesting and fun all at the same time! I have learned more in his classes than in any other at Berry. I would highly recommend any of his classes to anyone! I
Very good teacher and classes. Every class was different, but equally fun and interesting.
Great professor! Actually makes comparative politics interesting!
Dr. Hickman is exceptionally knowledgeable about his material, however he quite often adds a liberal twist that is unnecessary. I am very moderate and would rather two points of view instead of one liberal one.

Hickman is smart... very knowledgeable but also extremely self-centered. I cannot complain too much because he liked me in class and made my lifes so much easier, but I can only imagine those who he constantly put on the spot for whatever reason.
The only downside of the class is that you have to do a lot of work.
The best professor at Berry! His classes are a lot of fun and they really make you think! He is very willing to help and goes out of his way for his students- not just in academics, at least with me he has! He is a ture friend and wonderful teacher!
very nice guy who speaks with great knowledge about the subject
Hickman is very knowledgable about life and culture..which truly adds to politics class.. i definitely learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed this class.
Good professor.
Puts a liberal slant on a lot of things, but that's ok because I tend to agree. Otherwise, an awesome professor who makes you think and makes otherwise boring material interesting.
One of the most thought provoking and animated professors in the world. Also, he is a refreshing alternative to the Facist culture of Berry College. He is brilliant and challenges all students. He can also walk on water. Ask him.
Weaving through incestuous creation stories to international conflicts, Dr. Hickman provides an intelligent political account of the cultures. His classes are fun and enthralling examining political culture through discussion, lecture, & presentations.
Dr. Hickman is the greatest prof. He is always there when you need him.
He's the biggest socialist on campus but I love him. It's refreshing to hear opinions that are so blantantly outlandish and wrong. Get in an argument with him, it's fun. You won't get the last word though. His classes are great, take as many as you can. Plus, it will help your GPA.
great prof. Needs to lay off the movies with food or other obsessions.
probably the most entertaining prof on campus, was fun watching him expose one unexamined assumption after another, totally shreds stupid ideological beliefs
He is simply a great professor. He inspires you to learn and to think. Also, consider him to be a personal friend and not just an amazing teacher. Take every class he teaches.

He is awesome~! This class is really interesting and I highly recommend it. Prof. Hickman is so funny and he really makes the class enjoyable.
He is an absolutely amazing teacher! He explains everything marvelously, and has an amazing sense of humor. Sure, he's not conservative, but he's still amazing. The test are mostly essay and very straight forward. I wish he taught more classes that I could take...TAKE THIS CLASS!!!

He is an awesome teacher!!!
Dr. Hickman is wonderful- he is very thorough and clear- he is opinionated but at least he is passionate about what he is teaching- he does have a great sense of humor- i STRONGLY recommend his class
Dr. Hickman clearly loves working at Berry. He's always happy, always funny, and always interesting.
Resembles Giles from BTVS. Take a look next time you see him!
I had him for GOV 217, 393, and comparative political parties. He is a really funny guy and very helpful if you go to him during office hours. I would recommend taking him for intro comparative politics; he really enjoys teaching that class. Methods is awful and he hates teaching that class. Parties is okay, but not the best. However, he is great.
He's amazing!
He is a complete idiot. He is pompus, and puts himself way above the student. He is not willing to go out of his way, if you are a student with an opposing political view. If your at all not a libertarian, stay away from his class. He is not a good professor becuase he cannot accept views that are not his own. A COMPLETE PAIN!
He's super funny and his tests are pretty simple. Good choice for Gen Ed.
The capstone class wasn't much of a class.
Hickman makes you think
Great class, except for people who need constant reinforcement of their biases.
Comparative politics was a good class, i learned a lot! his discussions were just that, a discussion, not so much a lecture...he can get off topic but even that was fun, tests were easy if you paid attention. suggested for a gen ed
Dr. Hickman definitely gets my favorite teacher sticker. He makes class interesting and funny, and is very open about his own personal views. He teaches about government not only from the viewpoint of the victors, but also from the viewpoint of those that didn't get to write the textbooks. He gives out a study guide before every test.
Maybe the easiest grader in the government department. I did actually learn, though. He appeals to a certain type of student, of which i am not. Take him for a good grade, but take his teaching with a grain of salt. There's something to be said for taking the viewpoint of the defeated, but not a much as he tends to say about it.
Dr. Hcikman sometimes gives off a sacastic view point, but if your that type of person he is easy to get along with. He answers alot of question in class. He gives a review sheet to every test so if you study your notes the tests are easy. A good portion of your grade is for class participation, and he likes students that participate.
Very passoinate about what he teaches. Awesome professor!
Favorite professor at Berry so far. Very helpful in and out of class. If you work hard and are interested in his class you will make an A I did it twice this semester. His exams have study guides and you do have to read the books for the most part but they are not that bad.
Pretty creepy
I hate politics but this class was VERY interesting (i took it at 8am so this should say something)! LOVE IT! strongly suggest taking it no matter if you hate or love politics. He makes it fun and entertaining. Be ready to take notes and DO NOT SKIP THIS CLASS EVER. he goes over a lot of material in one day and you will be behind if you skip.
This class was not that great. Going into it I was kind of excited for comparative politics and having discussions. No, the class is mostly the professor just lecturing the entire time and putting his own political views on everything implicitly. Nothing wrong with Dr. Hickman, just not my cup of tea. Make sure you study alot for the tests!!
I was interested in this class originally but a lot of times in the middle of lecture I am zoning out due to boredom. As a person Dr. Hickman is cool, but his voice is somewhat monotone (which doesn't help me at 8 a.m.) and he likes to say things to provoke the "stereotypical berry" student.
Extremely helpful when concerning make-up work. Has a tendency to get sidetracked in lecture, but is always clear on test material. Animated in lecture, and makes foreign policies fun! Students must read chapters for tests, and view notes as a side tool.
Hated the class. The only grades we had were 5 papers for which he didn't ever really explain what he expected of them. I had no idea what my grade was throughout the semester until final grades came out. He's just strange. And whoever said he was hot, is sadly mistaken.
Very creepy. Constantly puts people on the spot. Smart, but strange. I was very offended when the first day of class he showed us a youtube video of some girl wanting a writer to "eff" her. I never knew what my grade was throughout the semester and he doesn't tell you what he expects of you for his 5 writing assignments (the only grades you get)
He does like shock value, might explain post below mine. And you do have to talk to him to find out what he wants, but his comments are usually on-point in his papers. He's uber-nice and laid-back, he just doesn't always fit the Berry culture, which isn't necessarily a bad thing at all. His class is actually a bit Socratic, which can intimidate.
Learned a ton in this class. There is too much information to comprehend it all, but you come away from the class with a ton of new knowledge. His tests are pretty tough, but he is really open to talking with students and helping you with any questions you have. Also, this class paired with Dr. Singh's Contemporary World Issues class is great!
He gives very interesting lectures, but he has a tendency to be very cynical and complains about his job and department a lot. He also has a tendency to play favorites in terms of how flexible he is with students missing class or needing to make up work. An interesting class, but I wouldn't take this professor again and I wouldn't recommend him.
Dr Hickman is the best thing that can happen to you at 8am, along with a cup of coffee. Passionate, clear, witty, untamed. Just what a school like Berry needs, and mainly lacks.Don't take it personal,he's teaching you a lesson that goes way beyond your typical Gen.Ed. class. Narrow-minded people with no intention to grow any critical mind, refrain :)
The tests can be difficult if you don't study exactly what will be on it. He is very helpful outside of class though. Great teacher and interesting class!
Very cynical and witty--loved it. Makes you think critically. Grade was determined by exams only, which wasn't great but at least we had no papers! You have to really study for the exams, but if you pay attention in class and read you'll have all the info you need, straightforward. Likes to single people out in class though.
I loved Dr. Hickman's class. You definitely have to do the readings and pay attention to his lectures in order to do well. Don't be afraid to go in and talk to him if you're struggling. He's very sarcastic and witty, and I enjoyed his sense of humor.
He was my favorite professor all semester! He was funny and easy to listen to very smart. I would recomend him to anyone that wants to further their knowledge of the world. He was very nice about questions and explinations. The way to make a good grade is do the readings and show up and ask questions.
This was probably the best class I have ever taken. His lectures were always informative and backed with examples. You have to go to class or you will miss material on the test. He was always willing to stay and talk after class. He was very respectful to me, though we had different opinions on some issues. Learned and retained a lot.
Dr. Hickman is great, but his class is tough. He is extremely smart and you can tell just by listening to him, but sometimes the lectures did go over my head. It is absolutely vital that you go to class and read the textbook. GET THE BOOK and voice your opinion, he loves it.
Class is nothing exceptional. He has trouble with interpersonal relationships so don't be surprised if he is not understanding when you ask for extensions or exceptions.
A professor who will make you think. Not very personable. He's pretty opinionated so if you are sensitive to certain comments (especially political or religious) I would avoid.
VERY opinionated. I would not recommend revealing to him that you are either dumb or a conservative. So keep your mouth shut during lectures. His tests are dumb because they largely come from the reading and not from class, and the reading sucks for a Gen Ed. He liked to give tests the monday after spring break, and is usually never in his office.
Hickman is, without a doubt, my favorite professor at Berry. I had him for a lower level class as well as the one I'm in now. For the lower level, he was engaging in class and made sure to add humor to his lectures. I think he's hysterical, but then again I'm liberal. Conservatives might not always find him so funny. I love his classes, TAKE HIM!
I highly recommend this class for anyone who is interested in PoliSci or International Studies. I know a lot of people who aren't one of those majors and really didn't enjoy the class, but I personally loved every lecture we had. He gives you such a different view of international affairs.
Dr. Hickman's classes are insightful and full of hilarious stories and anecdotes. I've taken nine classes with him, and I'll be friends with Hickman for the rest of my life.
Hickman is one of my favorite teachers. He always had interesting lectures, and cool stories about life. He taught the material well, although he can get off topic sometimes. Tests are somewhat hard, but you WILL NOT PASS if you either A) don't listen in class or B) don't read. Put in effort and you'll be fine. Can't wait to take him next semester
Wild. His lectures go all over the place and are really dang interesting. However, that's not what the test is over. You're going to have to read that ridiculously thick book to get A's on his test.
I really liked Dr. Hickman! He's so funny and his class was really interesting. Your whole grade comes from participation, a short map quiz, and 4 exams that were kinda hard but as long as you study and read the book you'll do fine. I made As on all of them so don't worry. He let you write a paper for 5% extra credit if you wanted. Will take again!
Dr. Hickman is hilarious. He makes every lecture a thrill to show up to because you learn so much and you grow to love it. His teaching style makes any class fun to go to because you get really excited to know what he is going to say next about the Russian oligarchy or anything for that matter. Do yourself a favor and take his class!
Dr. Hickman is a genius who never gives a boring lecture. Outspoken, hilarious and articulate- listening to him talk always had me looking forward to the next class. However, many topics are covered at a very fast pace (many that have nothing to do with eachother) so reading the book and attending class very important.
Dr. Hickman's class is great! He really cares about you learning the material. His lectures are interesting, but his exams are hard. You have to attend class and read the book in order to pass the exams. The chapters are long so do not wait last min to read. Overall, his class expanded my knowledge of politics
Dr. Hickman is awesome! He is such a cool professor. I was skeptical about taking this class, but I am glad I did! He lectures the entire class, but he makes unique points and is never dull. Just know that you have to read the book for the tests. He asked specific questions about things from the book, so read up. Take this class for foundations!
After taking his course, it really opened my eyes about politics. He makes you think about every point, instead of blindly following everything you hear. Raises a lot of interesting points. Made me actually want to go to his class!
Adore him as a person, and loved the class, but he starts lectures by telling a long historical anecdote to demonstrate the main idea, and there's no way to tell what's essential until he explains afterward, and he talks too fast to write everything. Then the tests put too much weight on random examples given 5 seconds of in-class attention.
The in-class discussions were really fun and he often veered off into interesting topics however you basically teach yourself the actual content and the book is awful. Also, his grades are pretty arbitrary because I didn't get good grades on tests but ended up making an 88 along with 1/3rd of the class so just talk a lot and you should pass.
Hated his class, would not recommend.
Hickman's comparative political science class is what got me interested in political science in the first place and now I'm considering majoring in it. Be prepared to sit through some anecdotes that don't seem to go anywhere and to teach yourself most of what will be on the tests. He encourages participation and is always a riot.
Hickman is alright. Classes are strictly lectures so as long as you read the textbook for yourself, you'll do fine.
My final grade was broken up into 5 categories each worth 20%: 4 exams and participation. Exams are 4 short answer and 2 essay questions in a 50 minute time period and lectures do not prepare you for them at all. If you read your textbook very carefully and study the short IDs he provided in advance hard you may be able to pull out an A.
Having Hickman was an experience. The class was interesting, but the textbook was boring and his exams were ridiculous. 4 exams 20% of your grade. He asks about minute things from the book which are low key irrelevant and it is like he wants you to fail. I would avoid this class if you wanna keep a good GPA.
Dr. Hickman is a very interesting professor. His lectures are honestly not super informational, but very entertaining. The tests are difficult if you do not read the textbook.
I enjoyed Hickman as a prof! While some of his lectures may feel long, most of them were interesting to me. Most of the material that was tested over was his train of thought, so you need to take thorough notes in class and read the textbook for exams. Exams are the only grades, but he gives a study guide.
I did not enjoy this class one bit. If youre not a big reader or auditory learner, this class is not for you. He assigns these ridiculously long textbook readings and when hes lecturing, I had no idea when he was just talking, or when he was actually teaching. I do not recommend this class.
Our grade is determined only by four exams. Would not recommend.
I would never take this class if I didn't need the credit. None of Dr. Hickman's lectures or class activities had anything to do with our assignments, which were just essays. He also seems to take pleasure in trying to trip students up and imposing his political views when they have nothing to do with the course. He might be a sociopath.
Dr.Hickman has good lectures but can get really confusing most of the time because what he talks about is not consistent with the material he wants you to learn from the book. You need to read in order to do good in the class. Test include small things mentioned in the lectures so detailed notes are crucial.
Hickman is a very interesting person. His lectures are either fascinating or very boring. Definitely study the textbook before exams, all the information is there plus sprinkled throughout his lectures. There's no homework other than readings, which keeps it fairly easy.
I LOVED DR. HICKMAN. I was skeptical when I chose his class but he is a great professor. He was very clear in his lectures and as long as you read the textbook you should be fine. I would suggest showing up to class and always being ready for class activities. Disregard comments about him you will love his class.
I took him for POL 339 WI (Russian history), I loved his class and his papers were spread out nicely. He has 5 papers in total so you need to make at least a 90 on the first one to be good for the rest of the semester. he was extremely understanding and offered insightful criteria. You definitely have to read to pass, I loved his class though.
Dr Hickman is a super funny professor and is super helpful if you ask him a question. Get to know him and spend time reading the textbook and you will do well in his class. I had him in the spring and he was one of the coolest professors if you are interested in Politics! Highly recommend!
Tests are over very specific things that he only briefly goes over in his 50 lectures. most of the class if spent trying to figure which information is useful and what is not. He uses very few visual aids and mostly just talks at you. The textbook is long, boring, and hard to read. Would not recommend this class.
Fish and canada!
fish and Canada!!
This class was all talk, no visual things like Powerpoint, however his lectures were well-spoken and participation matters he loves to hear feedback from everyone in the class. I personally liked the group activities randomly throughout the semester. We only had 5 exams and one map test but their all straightforward forward you just have to read.
Interesting topics such as learning about the impacts of fishing and Canada. 5 Tests and a map quiz are the only grades as well as participation. Tests aren't too bad but can be fairly specific. Lots of lectures but fairly engaging.
This class was very cool to me, as I was uneducated on a lot of the worlds issues. I loved the textbook we had to read because it was easy to understand and at times entertaining. His class is only based on 6 grades but his exams are really easy. His exams are pretty much word from word either from the textbook or what he said in lecture.
At first, Hickman seems like a tough professor, but his class was not that difficult. He said that the textbook was necessary to pass, but let me tell you that I didn't need that book at all. If something is going to be on the test, he WILL mention it in his lectures. If you genuinely listen and take notes during the lectures, you'll de great!
Hickman is a very engaging lecturer. What he says in class will be on the exam and he expects you to be in class every day however the only consequence is poor performance on the exams. He will not penalize you for being late to class. I would take any class with him!
I thought POL207 would not be fun but I grew to like Dr. Hickman. His lectures are very involved and you definitely want to show up and take good notes for the tests, but they aren't horrible. This class taught me a lot and I would recommend it.
This class was very interesting to take. I enjoyed the various different topics discussed during lectures. Textbook is important, but you can just skim through it and us it for definitions and can be fine. Graded on 4 exams, participation, and a map quiz on the eastern hemisphere. He gives a list of definitions needed for exams. Take Good Notes!
Dr. Hickman gives lengthy lectures on historical topics that often don't appear on his exams, and he doesn't assign any papers or extra credit. For someone like me who loves history/politics, excelling in his course was not difficult, but I can only imagine the frustration of people who are not passionate about the course material.
He just writes on the boards and talks and that doesn't help. No visual at all. He tells you to search it up and fast paced talks while taking notes which makes it harder to understand. For someone like me who likes politic he just needs to at least have visual teaching or make PowerPoint to explain things better.
Hickman is overall a chill prof with a dry sense of humor. He doesn't like Canvas and will quiz you on stuff he mentioned once in a lecture (mainly in multiple-choice sections on exams) so take good notes. You don't have to read thoroughly but I would suggest at least reading the summaries and headings. Participation IS graded but not harshly.
Hickman's POL207 class is engaging, with lectures that provide valuable insights. Attendance is a must, but the exams are straightforward if you stay on top of the material. I found Unstuck ai helpful for quiz prep alongside the textbook.
I like his lectures; they are interesting, but the only downside is when he is talking about something. He half-finishes it, goes to something, and goes back to what he was talking about. Overall, you have to take great notes to pass this class.I would recommend taking recorded lectures so you can go back and listen to see what you have missed.
He is a nice person and very helpful if you go to his office hours. He does not use any PowerPoints, instead he lectures all class and writes important things on the board. There are only a few exams that heavily impact your grade. You have to read the textbook and focus in class!
Dr. Hickman is sweet and wants all his students to succeed. My complaint is that his class is only lectures, and all you're graded on is four exams, a map quiz, and participation. I think if politics comes naturally to you this class would be easy, but I found myself studying for hours, and the multiple choice was nothing I had ever seen before.
