He calims that the tests are easy and that everyone should do good--But that's NOT the case. I'm an A student and I studied hard for every test. I barely cleared 60. The lectures are not relavant to the test material. There is no reward in going to class because the text covers material much better.
Hilarious. Was late for class about every week. A very nice guy who was always willing to give extra help if needed and he got the points across albeit he would ramble sometimes.
He is a really nice guy, obviously loves to teach, talk and play music...the problem that results: chronic rambling. He goes off on these random tangents and makes everyone in the room confused. The music we listend to was really cool, but you HAVE to do your readings/listenings out of class if you want to survive!!!
I loved this prof! He is so friendly and enthusiastic, and so knowledgeable about music! His lectures aren't boring either.... but they are packed with information, and they are long lectures. It is not an easy course, in fact, I got a D+ in his class and that's lowest mark I've ever had. Be prepared to do a lot of reading for his class.
He is fun, energetic, and super friendly. I had a great time in this class, though you have to keep up with the readings because he goes through the slides very quickly. I also like the fact how he makes sure to put the 'know it all show-offs' in their place. Makes everyone else who doesn't have a clue whats going on not feel so stupid.
This guy sure knows how to take the fun out of what could have been an awesome course. Everyone LOVES learning about 19th fiddle music for most of the semester in a pop music class. Thanks a lot John.
The class should have been interesting but there were just far too many tangents and too much info added in that wasn't important. Lectures seemed to drag on forever sometimes. He does know his stuff and truly love music.
Great Prof. Goes by the book, yet knows his stuff about classical music history.
Definitely my favourite professor of the semester. So knowledgeable and friendly, its refreshing to see a prof. who actually enjoys what they teach! I would recommend this course to anyone who loves music!
had an awesome time in the class,,,he is very funny and he knows his stuff...i kinda scared me sometimes how much he knows...but in a good way
knowledgeable and helpful prof with a sense of humour, but tends to veer off topic very easily and for a long, long time. gets behind in lectures, so that by the end of the term, you're cramming everything into the last three hours.
He really does know what he is talking about. I personally found him very interesting. He does read from the slides but he often goes off on interesting tangents. Will answer questions in class and if you need to will answer questions after class. A great person and great prof.
Wonderful professor, a lot of fun to work with. He made sitting in class/learning entertaining and fun.
I loved this guy! He made class so much fun to be in, and it was so interesting listening to his many many stories he had. Has a strange fetish for boy bands.. But all in all Higney is awesome!
Higney is a fantastic professor. This course was incredibly interesting. Some of the earlier comments about him had me worried, but I found his course no more difficult than any other course. He tells you flat out what terms you need to know for midterms/exams and there are absolutely no surprises or trickery. All the material covered in class is r
Awesome teacher, made coming to class fun. Learned our names and didn't pressure anyone to participate. Exams are super fair and he'll e-mail you a list of things to study to prep.
Somehow I can picture John Higney standing in front of his mirror in a bathrobe conducting a make believe orchestra. class could have been interesting if he had used a historical overview with a philiospical/theoretical approach to classical music...instead he just talked music theory...yawn...poor john and his make believe band.
If you're in engineering... I wouldn't recommend you take this course as your elective. The time you get left over from your other courses is not nearly enough to get a good grade in this course. It will basically pull your grade down. It's for people in easy degree programs with lots of spare time.
The discussions about Jackie Chan, Mr. T, and the emotional well-being of clams really broke up long lessons of chord progressions and cadences! The material was a bit challenging, but the prof made my day.
I'll agree that this is a class not suited for students in real academic disciplines. If you have time to memorize Higney's 200 word keylist, and sit through lectures which are as interesting as watching grass grow - then you'll do great. If not stay away. Higney is proof that lower level profs seem to think learning is tied to memory retention
Great guy. Funny and incredibly passionate about music. His tests/exams were fair. Has the tendency to wander off-topic at times--often to amusing ends. Does seem to prefer BMus students, however.
Fantastic prof for all courses he teaches. Strongly recommend taking it, unless you're an engineer like that other poster and don't enjoy a good arts course. Keeps lectures interesting and is incredibly helpful in both a classroom and a one-on-one situation.
Higney is a dominatrix masquerading as a professor...pay no attention to his fanboi's below (the ones that probably bring him an apple every day and sit in the front of class)...this guy needs to recognized that HIS IS NOT THE ONLY CLASS IN THE WORLD....his exams are absolutely ridiculous as are his famous keyword lists....bald baby.
He's a great professor. He actually seems like he likes to teach, unlike many other university profs. It was an interesting course, and is quite easy if you do any amount of work, except for apparently those engineers.
The course I took with Higney was MCOM cross-listed with MUSI, though it was very heavy on the MUSI in the early going. However, I advise any MCOM students to stick that part out, because our stuff does come! Higney is interesting, funny, and makes classes great. If you go to classes and pay attention, studying will be a breeze. Awesome prof.
Had him again for music industries. He's definetly in the top 3 teacher's I've ever had. He has so much passion and wants you to show it too. The man cares alot and has a very clear teaching style. He is not what I would call an easy grader though and you will need to pull your own weight to succeed in his class.
Passionate about what he does, and performs a reasonable lecture (And can be quite funny) However, the marking is kind of a big jerk, because the worth of Q&A, Essay Q's and MC is very low. So when doing the midterms and exams, make sure you do SUPER well, and be overly to the point. Espescially when you are given alot of general topics to cover.
One of Carleton's best music profs. While I agree with some of the other posts that his classes are better for BMus students (though music history ISN'T easy, engineers...get that out of your head), if you get into one of his smaller classes he knows you by name and is extremely engaging and helpful with any problems or difficulties.
Higney really cares about his students and is passionate about what he teaches. However, this course is all about memorization. Good for art students with lots of free time, but not recommended for students taking real programs. The lack of thinking required to do well in conjuntion with the large amount of effort required is excruciating.
Dr. Higney is an extremely helpful professor. He's always willing to help with course content, and actually sat down with me for a good hour until I was comfortable with the material. Superb prof. Keep up the great work!! Awesome music history prof too btw.
Very nice person, he's a true creative mind. Always reminds us of the real important things to remember and is very easy to talk to.
I didn't find Professor Higney helpful at all - lowest mark to date - worked very hard- unresponsive to needs of students - got A-'s in other music courses.
For being a course cross-listed with Comm, it is focused largely on music. Tends to relate everything to old rock bands and songs you've never heard of. I'd expect a professor to be free of bias; Higney will rip apart every other genre EXCEPT indie rock even though he claims not to. So much material and history. I wish I'd avoided this class
Soooo brutal. I'm in second year, with 2nd and 3rd year music courses in which I'm doing well. But this first year course is my lowest mark of all of them. He thinks we are all musical geniuses, and so doesn't take time to explain anything. By the end of the course, you will never want to hear the expression onwards and upwards again...
Dr Higney is a great professor. He is very well educated, and can talk at length about any musician mentioned in class. Know that he will not 'hand you the course' though, and if you want to do well you must READ THE TEXTBOOK. I got 100% on the midterm and got a great overall mark, and I'm not a music student. You just have to what is assigned.
This guy is too legit. He knows his music and its social impact. Great prof, looked forward to every single lecture.
Very down-to-earth professor. I found Dr. Higney to be very helpful and supportive when I was having trouble. He's funny too but knows when to be serious and get down to business. I had no qualms with this man. One of the best profs I've had.
Amazing proff! so helpful, fun! do the listening and read the listening guides and you will do super well! he really wants you all to pass so if there is confusion go see him!
Worst class ever taken at carleton, period!! Prof Higney was horrible.. he thinks that EVERYONE majors in music (i don't), so I felt behind from day one. He doesn't respond to emails promptly, not clear, arrogant as well. DO NOT TAKE this course if you don't need to!!! Good luck..
Does not explain clearly. Even the things I knew prior to taking this class, I had trouble following with his explanations. He's a funny guy, but gets side-tracked a lot. Not the worst class ever, but not the best either. Definitely not for people not in music.
Probably the most painful prof I have ever had to experience yet. Arrogant, self-promoting and frankly, standoffish. In a required class for music students, he teaches at such a rudimentary level that it is equivalent to what I learned in grade school. Does not answer emails, either. I ended up entirely skipping all lectures and still got an A+.
Alright class. Not recommended for someone who has no music background. He tends to speak as if everyone in the room knows about everything music. Not a throw away course for an elective since there's so much to know for the tests. Enthusiastic, and cares about his students success though.
As a neuroscience student, I didn't consider myself in an "easy arts program" and I still did really well in this class. It's a class with a history component, so obviously there's some memorization. That's what history is. If you can't remember simple names and dates, this isn't the class for you. He was helpful and kept office hours regularly.
Higney has great energy for a morning class. Obviously very passionate about what he teaches. Really easy to meet with, exams are fair (even if not a MUSI student - no music theory components). Can't wait to see my final grade. Beautiful Classical music, inspired me to take another MUSI history course. Great job Prof. Higney!
John Higney is the most handsome guy I know
Was by far my favourite prof at Carleton in the last 2 years. Higney is extremely engaging and passionate about music. His views on the music industry are amazing and he is very open to hearing what students opinions were. His tests were fair and he was happy to help with papers.
Ignore the negative comments... most are a result of students who did poorly. Higney is a solid professor - clear expectations, thorough lectures, and he has a ton of musical insight. Great guy with a relaxed vibe and an interesting sense of humor. He is easily distracted, but that just adds to the fun of it.
Great prof. Very laid back he's from nova Scotia so you know... Really knows his stuff, can always answer questions that are off topic or beyond scope of course. Great musician, brought instruments into class to demonstrate different sounds. He's usually about 5 minutes or so late starting class because people want to talk to him. Really nice guy.
John is probably the most enthusiastic professor I've had at Carleton. His lectures are always a joy, and he keeps the class energized no matter the time of day, not to mention he puts effort into knowing our names. I would greatly enjoy taking future courses with John as my professor.
he really has sense of humor, and really nice! if you missing the class, feel free to contact him, he will very carefully explain what you missed!
I think is easy to get a A+ if your really get the all things in classes, and prof is really nice, i have taken third course of this prof, course material are pretty fun. i got an A+ on this course, and I am not major in music, its all fine, because the course is design to student interested in music and don not have so many background
John Higney is one of the most engaging professors at Carleton. I wasn't particularly interested in the earlier part of the course but as it moved on I found the lectures and discussions increasing stimulating and interesting. I recommend trying to get somewhat familiar with the general periods of classical music from 1500s on before taking this.
Awesome prof! Truly loves teacher his passion and makes it enjoyable for everyone! Took this course as an elective and though I came in knowing nothing, he made the class interesting and easier. The course itself is very simple if you already know music history. I didn't pay attention in class much and notes were not online. Great class and prof!
Very boring lectures. Rambles A LOT. Two short writing assignments are actually fun to write. Final paper is not. Exams are really based on readings and course content so highly recommend going to class! I would not take another course with him because I always found myself doing work for other courses in his class because his rambling got annoying
He is a good lecturer but beware of the final papers and exams, he demands extremely specific things that are almost impossible to do if you don't think about it in advance. Try to never skip class if you have the tendency to do so. If you're not majoring in music, avoid this course.
Good course if you have some background in music. Prof Higney is a great lecturer who makes learning and experiencing music history enjoyable and interesting. However, I would not recommend taking this course with no musical background, as the tests are based on the musical terms, which are somewhat tedious and difficult to learn with no background
The course was memorization heavy (my study docs for the midterm and exam were around 30pgs), but honestly it was still my favourite of the semester thanks to the enthusiastic lectures given by Prof. Higney! I'm not a music major so many concepts were foreign to me, but he really cares about your success and always makes extra time to explain!
Dr. Higney is great at what he does. Very knowledgeable about the topics he teaches, and his passion for them is evident, which does make his lectures heavy, but very interesting and engaging! Super helpful outside of class as well, if needed. Stutters quite a bit, but it's something you get used to and block out. Overall, a great choice.
To be honest this course was more dry than I expected. The three hours consisted of him talking the whole time with the odd music video shown. I found it pointless to attend the lecture every week as the terminology was posted online and easy to understand. He is a very nice guy and very knowledgeable of the music industry.
Attending his class is probably the only thing that doesn't make me want to shoot myself at 8:30 AM on Monday mornings. Great professor both in terms of the amount of knowledge he has and the way he teaches. Missing his class will probably end in you looking through pages upon pages of text to get meaning from the terms posted.
I loved professor Higney!! I got cursed with having him for a night class so if I'm being honest I skipped quite a bit, but I'm still getting a decent grade otherwise and any bad grades are my own fault. He gives awesome lectures and is very passionate. I wish I had his class at a better time in the day because i actually like his lectures.
If you want to take Musi 1002 as an elective like I did, do yourself a favour and don't take it! ESPECIALLY if John Higney is the prof. By far the worst prof one had in my three years at Carleton and its not even close. He is lazy, doesn't share any slides on cu learn, comes to class late, speaks with a low voice is very un-entertaining and dull.
His class was tougher than my bio class
Professor Higney is a caring, knowledgeable, and entertaining instructor. However, I found this course to be disorganized in every administrative way. I took this class as an upper-year student for elective credit and have experience with sociology (this course is basically sociology plus music), and somewhat regretted it despite the easy markers.
He doesn't upload the lectures after class and also does not allow you to take photos of the powerpoint, so you better get your listening ears open and ready to go and be able to type / write faster than an Olympic sprinter. Do not take this class as an elective, only if required. Do not make the same mistake I did. He is quite funny though.
hes an absolutely horrible prof. he doesn't give outlines for anything so you have no clue what to do and then when you do something wrong theres nothing you can do about it. never take this prof. he also never posts slides so in class all your worried about is taking notes f the slides without listening to him so its impossible to learn anything.
If you do not have a background in music do not take this course especially with this prof. Unfortunately, the prof acts as though everyone already has an extensive knowledge and therefore he does not elaborate on anything. Also does not post slides and talks a mile a minute. Be ready to memorize 200 terms youve never heard of before.
dudes class is a snooze fest, dumps info but no one listens as they are transcribing the power-point into word because he doesn't upload it. makes you come to class as there are pop-quizzes randomly worth 10% of your grade. NOT a bird course, or enjoyable like the course name might have you think
a fun prof, but a hard marker and a lot to remember
He doesnt give enough time to complete his exams, even if you go through the PMC for extra time (2.5 hours to write a full essay, short answers and multiple choice) Theres a reflection in every class, and he refuses to post the elaborately written slideshow so taking notes at lightning speed is a must.
One of the worst Profs I've had! Rambles, you have to be FAST note taker, goes quickly through slides, does not allow for the copying of his slides, throws a fit if you try to take a photo of them. Says he will release info from the slides, but the key concepts is poorly lacking in info so if you miss class you need a friends notes or good luck.
Don't do it unless you have a musical background. Did not understand much.
Do not take this if you know nothing about music. Yes, I got a good grade BUT it did not come easy. If you aren't willing to put in the work and study then you probably will not do well. He could probably condense the 3 hour lecture into 40 minutes if he focused and stopped going on weird tangents. It was just an OKAY class.
The course has a textbook and he very clearly pulls directly from it, so you can read the textbook without watching the lectures and still pass so long as you put in the work. The listening quizzes are probably the hardest part of the course and you can easily pass by listening to the provided examples
Professor Higney is a great prof, and he has been amazing during this online semester. As long as you are respectful and make an effort to learn, there will be no issues. However, this class was (relatively) easy for me because I am a music major, but if you know nothing about music you may find it quite difficult.
I'm glad that there's an online version of his lectures posted beforehand because this guy rushes so quick when he presents slideshows. It can be very hard to follow along and take notes during live lectures. So I recommend that you watch his recorded lectures beforehand if you are a slow notetaker.
This course can be chosen as an elective. Yet, he expects students to already have advanced knowledge in music and makes such a big deal out of it. Rushes so quick in his recorded lecture videos. He also speaks in a lazy tone, which does not capture the attention of most students. Although his quizzes are MC, lectures take so long to understand.
Chill prof! He can really bring music topics to life during live meeting sessions. Would recommend that you take notes and have watch his lectures in advance because he goes through slides way quicker during live classes and may skip some. However, he encourages participation in class, which will definitely help you understand the topics better.
Great prof! Loves sharing wonderful concepts of music history and other areas of music. His live meetings can easily inspire people further with the ideas covered in asynchronous lectures. He is also fair with evaluation and will let you know what chapters you need to know as well as the format for quizzes, midterm and final.
Awesome prof with very clear expectations on what students should know. Even though some students don't have much prior knowledge in classic music, he can provide lots of inspiration to get students motivated in the course.
Really nice guy, but a lot of work is required to get a solid mark and grading can be a bit hard
Don't take the class as an elective if you're not knowledgeable about the contents within. Discussion posts take forever but the prof does occasionally accommodate when students are struggling. Don't assume this is a bird course, especially if you're a freshman coming straight from high school under COVID. Funny professor though.
Took this class as a complementary studies elective for eng. Prof himself is great and really seems to know his stuff but this class is a lot of work for an elective. I found a lot of the material difficult to understand. Weekly discussion posts prompts were hard to understand and very repetetive.
Professor was unorganized. Due dates were constantly changed. Lecture material and content was very difficult to understand, especially with no background in music history/terms. TA's were the saving grace and quite helpful. Expectations were unclear for aspects of exams. Professor was very hard to reach, there is no point in trying to contact him.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!! HORRIBLE PROF, BAD AT TEACHING, MIDTERMS ARE HARD. DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL. what I thought would be an easy class was my hardest class all semester! really did not like this prof at all
IT'S A TRAP! The professor's lectures are heavy and hard to understand. Everyone I know of in this class would not take any course by him ever again. There is a ton of terminology and he doesn't make it easy to understand. He doesn't post his slides. Tests are only forward navigation meaning you can't go back. Discussion posts are complex and hard.
This course is great and fun to engage with if you find a social science approach to music to be interesting. I managed to do fine without using the textbook at all, as the lecture content covers all of what is in the textbook. The content is taught as if students have prior knowledge of a lot of the concepts. 85% of grade is midterm, paper, exam.
He's a very understanding professor. The lecture is very memorization heavy, but every assignment / test was extended past it's due date because students asked. If you need help, he will help you. Seems like a genuinely good person.
Prof. Higney is passionate about the material but the delivery is often very monotone. It is VERY memorization-heavy, so constant attention in lectures is required.
Taken his course on MUSI1001 and thought he was really inspiring. However, his explanations in MUSI1002 are a completely different story. A lot of the concepts on the slide are often all over the place and are sometimes off-topic. He also never allows students to even take pictures. Plus, there's not even a single video posted on Brightspace.
MUSI1001 was a fun class. This year, I thought he was still engaging and knowledgeable but he made MUSI1002 absolutely awful. He rushed through lecture slides much more quicker and generalized most topics instead of going further into detail. His tone is not even that exciting unlike 1001. Would avoid him after taking 1 course with him!
Avoid this prof if you can. He never uploads lecture notes after every lecture and only gives a brief description through key concepts, which are sometimes things that are off topic. Never lets you take photos and gets mad whenever people ask him questions about topics from the previous slides.
MUSI1002 is terminology heavy but Prof Higney tries his best to discuss with the class various topics covered in the lecture. He's also very approachable online, along with TAs in the course and tries to make things as fair as possible. I do find his lecture rules annoying though (can't take pictures, no slides posted).
Dr. Higney is very passionate about a subject nobody cares about. His classes are so improperly structured and all over the place. There is no real way to study for his class and he expects way too much from first year students in a first year course. All of my ECOR courses are easier than his class. Difficult ECOR courses actually have good profs.
Don't take this class, it was so frustrating! It's so content-heavy and the finals and midterms are insane, they're made to break you!! Not to mention he doesn't make accommodations for ANYONE. I took this class as an elective thinking it would be bearable, IT WASN'T!
The midterm was really difficult, included so much content. Lectures are very heavy with materials needed to be memorized for tests. Seems excessively difficult for a first year music course.
He seems passionate about what he's talking about, but the lectures were boring, and quite drawn out, with way too much memorization to the point you don't properly learn anything. Unfortunately, it's all terminology memorization and not proper intellectual thinking and or knowledge, also the midterm was excessively difficult.
The prof is alright on his own. He's incredibly passionate about what he teaches but I've found that he rambles quite a lot and brings in a number of various ideas into a single sentence so it can be somewhat difficult to follow. In addition, he heavily draws out the lectures which are often very boring and have a lot of material on them.
Higney's lectures can be a lot, but reading the textbook helps a lot when it comes to knowing the test material. He doesn't post lectures but he posts key terms which is pretty much all you need to review for the tests. He will help you if you email him or attend office hours (he helped me find sources for my paper when I was struggling).
Hate to break it to everyone but this course isn't exactly about pure music. Most of the time, it involves a lot of discussion on historical concepts behind music. If you aren't strong or crazy about history, then I would strongly suggest staying away. Plus, the prof made the course much worse. Introduced so much terminology and difficult exams.
Avoid! I took this course thinking it would be an interesting elective but it wasn't. The prof is self-righteous and picky on a course that most people don't take as a required course. Lectures just consist of rambling with no apparent focus. He speaks with a monotonic attitude. He wants you to succeed but grades so heavily on every evaluation.
I'm always bored during his lectures, and I end up zoned out at the end of every lecture. His exams are so hard, and although he says that he gives you plenty of time to complete your exam it's a lie! He doesn't! I barely finished my exam. He made us hand-write 10 questions (125-150 words) in an hour and a half.
Prof. Higney truly cares about the success of his students, not because he has to, but because he truly loves educating. His classes are engaging, evaluations are clear and fair, and he is very accessible for help with research. Truly an amazing professor.
Not a fan of the class, but the prof was awesome.
I genuinely love him, he is the best prof. I took his MUSI 1001 course, and it was so interesting. One because I love history, and 2 because he is so entertaining. Its hard to get bored in his class. He is also super understanding, I got injured and had to go home he was very understanding and allowed me to do quizzes late. He is the GOAT.
This course was not what it was described to be and he favourited music students
He's a great professor in general, but I found it very difficult to know what I was being graded on, and didn't get very clear reponses from the TAs. In general, I think it's more a disinterest in the class rather than the prof. I was just expecting less sociology and more music analysis. Either way, he is very kind and fun to talk with.
Dr. Higney is one of the most passionate and friendly professors, but it is a shame that he had to teach this course. The structure of this course is REALLY lecture and memorization heavy, and the TA's (or mine at least) are not helpful. If you plan on taking the course, make sure you use Higney's office hours to review the lecture material.
Professor Higney really loves the material that he teaches and his enthusiasm is contagious. Expectations are clear and you will not succeed if you don't show up to lectures. Don't take this course if you're looking for an easy pass, but you will do well if you pay attention.
Professor Higney's class is intense, with tons of memorization. Although lectures can be dull, engaging with the material is key. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for study prep. Not for the faint of heart, but rewarding if you put in the work.
great prof, litterally the reason I chose the music program
I'm sure Professor Higney is a great music teacher FOR music students, but taking this as an elective during my first year with little to no knowledge on music history or music terms was HELL. The class calls for a lot of memorization and the material is very dense and difficult to get through if you don't have prior music knowledge.
