This class is not hard but lots of reading. 2papers of 1000 words, one final and a group presentation.
Great professor that provides interesting reading material and promotes great discussion in the class. The paper topics are interesting and fun, both a 1000 words so not rigurous. Group presentation is straight forward and should not take more than a couple of hours to but togethe, since it is on one article. Great class + Great professor = :)
Really bad professor. Honestly, he is ****. If he doesn’t like you it will reflect in his grade. Truly one of the worst professors at DePaul.
Great Prof. Stimulates great conversations each class and really makes you think. VERY fair grader and doesn't give you pointless, long assignments to work on. Two papers- 3-6 pages, not hard. Final optional if you attend all classes and do well on daily quizzes and discussions. Knows his stuff and is a nice guy. Recommended!
John keeps it real. There is a decent amount of reading but his coursework will give you new eyes. Be prepared for regular quizzes on the readings and make it a point to speak up in class. Don't miss class or you will get to write a 2000+ word research paper. He is a fair grader and shares some unique experiences. Like learning?-take him.
Hildebrand gives a ton of reading assignments and then quizzes you on the smallest detail from each article. The articles are sometimes 20 pages long and there could be as many as 5 assigned per class. Once you can handle that, there are three essays that he grades fairly. Don't miss class!
He may look like a jerk when he does give you many reading assignments, but they are all online, so you don't have to purchase a book. He is like a philosophy teacher, no right or wrong answer, as long as you can argue your point. Rewards hard work, and a very fair grader. Loved him!!!
I took him over the summer and I was scared I wouldn't do well because he seems really strict, but ended up with an A even thought I screwed up some quizzes and missed one class.
Unethical - he showed up late, read straight from textbook powerpoint slides - NO IDEA how to teach, NO classroom discussion, NO feedback, Final exam was not comprehensive and solely based on a worksheet he gave out the night before the exam. I am very puzzled by previous comments. This was not an online class. I WANT MY MONEY and TIME BACK!
Basically if you watch the videos you have to for this class you will learn more than you actually do in the actual class. You never have any idea what grade you are getting, which is extremely frustrating. But on the other hand you can redo assignments for a better grade and that is pretty awesome.
This is a great class for a senior capstone. There is reading involved, but they are not boring or dry. Really can relate to all articles as a business student. Best class I have taken at DePaul
Took for ICS 392, 3 hour course once a week. A lot of reading, but on interesting, eye opening topics that are easy to discuss during class, which you must do. Before every class is a quiz on the readings, if you did the readings it'll be a breeze. Three 1,000 word essays throughout the quarter on really easy topics. Not an easy A but not hard.
I really disliked the structure of this course. Participation in class is worth the equivalent as all the papers you write, so even if you have knowledge, it means nothing because he cares more about talking about it than knowing about it. He also gives out like 2 hours worth of readings for HW and has a quiz every week. Would go a different route
He was such an amazing professor! I took him over the summer for my senior seminar, and have no regrets. He gives lots of reading and daily quizzes based on the readings, but they're all really interesting! Don't take him if you're looking for an easy A, but DEFINITELY take him if you want to learn something.
If you don't think like he does, don't bother. Condescending.
If you like voicing you opinion and participating, this class is for you. The work is super easy, you learn a substantial amount. The required participation and discussion is a major part of your grade. Every student is required to add to the discussion by summarizing the reading or giving an opinion on it. There are readings prior to every class.
Take him if you want to learn a lot, especially if you learn well with real world examples. Don't take him early in the day or you'll pass out during class. He also never responds to emails and quizzes are hard. Instead of one right answer he'll put three and expect you to know the "most right" one. Overall not shabby.
Five letters Avoid!! There are no study guides, will nit pick sections of the power points for the questions to be used on the Midterm and Final thats over 100+ slides to memorize!! Also midterm and Final are free response so if your answer is not 100% like the definition good luck. There is a 20 page magazine report that he grades harshly on.
Yeah... Had him for 301 and 310 and the second time around was a mistake. Extremely tough grader for 310 and just lectures on powerpoint the whole time. Takes attendance. Assigns a 20 page magazine paper that took a lifetime to finish. They offer this class online.... do that
By far one of my favorite classes at DePaul. While the class was challenging, I learned more in this course than most others. A lot of reading, but very rewarding if you put in the time and effort. Class participating is a must but this is not hard since the articles are so interesting and relevant. Hildebrand definitely rewards the hard working.
Honestly, he's a good person and extremely knowledgable about Consumer Behavior. BUT, he lectures from the ppt slide for 2 hours straight, breaks, then repeats for another hours and 15. It's unbearable. Tests are short answer. No multiple choice/TF questions. 20 page magazine paper. Take this class if you don't care about the above mentioned.
You have to read articles every week and participate in class discussions. The articles are interesting so it isn't hard to do. Quizzes every class + three 5ish-page papers. Hildebrand was such a knowledgeable professor. If you want a blow off class, don't take him. If you want your tuition to be put to good use, take him. You'll learn a lot!
Professor Hildebrand saved my life.
Always willing to talk
This was by far the best course I have taken at DePaul. Very interesting course. Hildebrand uses real applications to help gain better insight into consumers behavior but generally just why people do the things they do. All lecture. 20 page paper at the end of the course. Midterm is not too bad. No homework.
Worst class I've taken at DePaul so far. Midterm wasn't too bad but there's a 20 page paper that took forever to finish. Very tough grader. The final was like the SAT, whatever you answer incorrectly counts against you. Would not recommend this class.
This class was great he tells you exactly what you need to know for every test and exactly what needs to be on the papers. There is a lot of vocab in the class, but most of what I took from the class is not taught in the book but knowledge and real applicable examples from him. Great speaker and enjoyed going to class every week. Very knowledgeable
Do not take this unless you want to teach yourself the whole course. He will read of the powerpoint and not teach you anything. His final was WORD FOR WORD final not multiple choice. Midterms was 90 questions and a long short answer. He never gave us a study guide but tells us to study the powerpoint. If you have to take him, good luck.
John is a great guy but very hard grader. You are only graded on a few things midterm, final and a two papers. One paper being 15 pages and It has to have specific terms that states in class. Midterm isnt too bad but final is ridiculous it is all short answer and answers must be word for word. If you can takes someone else I would do so.
Makes you memorize 100+ slides randomly picks one slide to give you a short answer on for midterm and final. He gives you no study guide or way of studying. Don't buy the book it cost $100+ dollars and you will never use it. He teaches you nothing in class just a fat guy talking about food and common sense business. Do not take him you wont learn.
Dr. Hildebrand is a solid teacher. He has a midterm, final, and two class papers all testing materials are in the slides. The lectures are long and extremely boring he almost never lets you out early. But if you miss class it won't count against you and since he publishes all slides online you won't miss much. Also, don't bother buying the book.
extremely dry lectures. super dry. He is a really tough grader. Like unnecessarily hard. If the assignments are graded tough, he should be extra thorough because the syllabus is broad. I have the chance to take him again this quarter for 310 but there is no way if I don't have to.
Just a guy who doesn't know how to teach. I can read off a powerpoint too and think I'm a teacher. Literally grades everything like you are in a PHD Class for English. Pathetic, please save your GPA and take someone else.
John is an alright guy, the class can be long, but he makes it interesting here and there, and he knows some things. Attendance is not mandatory. Class consists of a midterm, final, a small and big project. If you study all the notes you will do great on the midterm, final is a bit tougher. Projects were easy just don't procrastinate. Not the worst
I took this class for both 301 and 310. His lectures can be dry, which is why so many students leave his class early. My suggestion is that if you skip class, make sure you at least read the textbook. His MKT 310 class also had 15 percentage points of extra credit. If you end up getting above an 80 before the final, you can skip it, which was great
Horrible professor. Does not teach, tough grader on papers, and the info you get tested on for the midterm and final are completely different from the info on the Power Point slides he lectures off of. Avoid taking him if you care about your GPA.
Really sarcastic guy. He is very to the book when it comes to material. Nothing is a surprise and all work is laid out in the syllabus. His lectures are funny and help you to understand the material.
Alot of reading required. This class isnt an easy A however you get what you put it. Class is interesting and John is super knowledgeable.
John is really passionate about this topic and is very knowledgable. He can be tough, but that's because truly cares that we get the most value out of this class. There's quite a bit of reading, but the material is interesting so it's not painful. I really appreciated the different perspectives and unconventional approach to a business class.
AVOID! Lectures are dry since he reads off the powerpoints. Heavy assignments but offers no guidance other than "it's in the syllabus" (which only gives vague idea of what you should be doing). Says he's an easy grader and that you'll get out early all the time but he isn't and will talk right up to the end of class. Textbook is needed as a guide
J.H. is knowledgable about the subjects he teaches but fails to design any sort of curriculum that ensures his students actually understand what is being taught. Your grade in his class is entirely dependent on 2 exams, one group project, and one solo project. If youre able to re-teach yourself all the material before the exams, easy A for you.
His class is tough and there is a ton of writing required but Professor Hildebrand is incredibly knowledgeable, passionate about what he does and tries to connect to the material to the real world (he tends to go on some rambling sprees for that reason though). Genuinely cares about the success of his students and it shows.
J.H. Is as a lecture heavy professor who attempts to use dry humor yet it often falls flat. Class consist of a PowerPoint lecture followed by discussing the reading. Grade determined by midterm, final & a 3K word personal paper and 6K word group paper. Hates chick-fil-A with more passion than he teaches his class. Save your time & do it online
take any other professor you can. I understand this class was moved online, but at least my other professors had clearer syllabi and added voice overs at the very least to their power points. maybe taking in person would be better, but his comments on discussion posts lack any feasible feedback and his class timeline is wack. just trust me.
Professor Hildebrand is unique in the sense that he doesn't help out his students. Online classes are not well suited for this professor. This class is very lectured based so you have to follow his lecture and powerpoints. In-person may be a different experience as the other reviews say, but overall he could've done better.
I actually took Professor Hildebrand's class online (during the Coronavirus pandemic) so obviously things were a little different, however Professor Hildebrand did absolutely nothing to help out students during this time. He was cold and not at all compassionate towards us, didn't accept ANY late work, and gave vague directions for our assignments
Professor literally does not teach. Took advantage of remote learning situation and refused to hold class/office hours. Hostile, degrading, condescending over email. John Hildebrand is by far the least academically equipped person Ive met in academia.
Took his class online during the pandemic so things may have been different if this class was taken in person. Not helpful at all with feedback on discussion posts and youre teaching yourself. Really did not put in effort at all as a professor. Actually a joke when comparing how my other marketing profs handled online teaching.
Hildebrand i gets angry if you email him for any questions. Pinned on D2L is, I will no longer be responding to emails about course procedures and course content. Today alone I had to answer the same question 5 separate times in 5 separate emails." Vey encouraging and helpful for students trying to transition to online during this global pandemic.
Professor has an attitude and lack of respect to students. I feel like a burden when asking him questions or when he leaves feedback on papers. He thinks giving us more assignments makes up for not being in class but doesn't teach any material for us to properly complete the assignments. I DO NOT recommend this teacher under any circumstances.
The best way to save yourself in school is to simply not take this professor. I am taking Hildebrand right now in the remote environment and he is by far the most disrespectful and condescending teacher I've ever had. He is unclear yet demanding, and gives aggressive feedback that demotivates a straight A student from putting in ANY more effort.
Rude, if you ask him a question hell just cut you down and tell you to figure it out. Your score is out of 107 points the whole entire class and make sure to write 4 page papers for the 6 discussion questions you get every week or you'll probably fail that too!
John is the most disrespectful, aggressive, tough grader I have ever taken. Take any professor but John. I am reporting him to the dean and hopefully the university does something about it considering a lot of these reviews say similar. He is condescending in the way he grades. The guy thinks he is a genius against capitalism.
Good professor with interesting materials in the course. Would recommend taking him for ics 392.
this man is the worst professor i've every had so far at Depaul university, highly recommend avoiding this instructor AT ALL COST, one of the rudest professors in the business school . John is one of those professor that sees the student as just a paying customer of the university and could care less about student success.
This Professor has to be one of the worst Professors I have ever taken at this school. He is such a tough grader whatever you do stay away
One of the worst Professors of all time
Great professor! Keeps lectures interesting by incorporating current events/culture. Lectures are not mandatory but you will learn a lot by attending. No tests, mostly discussion posts and papers. If you put forth the effort it is a very straightforward A. He wants students to succeed. Highly recommend.
Assigns an absurd amount of writing assignments to complete within a short amount of time. Seems to use his class as a way to push his personal beliefs. Rude and condescending to students. Would not even respond to my emails near the end of the quarter. Genuinely the most incompetent professor I've ever seen.
I had the pleasure of taking three courses with Professor Hildebrand throughout the pandemic. The classes broke free from traditional online death by powerpoint models. Instead, it called on independent critical thinking and more engaged participation. Of all the classes I have taken, Professor Hildebrands have been my absolute favorite.
I would avoid this class if possible. Its not engaging and is far too much work for what is being discussed. Probably, the least enjoyable discussion post based class Ive ever taken here. Sums up all the annoyances of a DePaul education into one course. If you can take another senior seminar Id recommend you do.
Dont listen to any of the good reviews here. Not a tough grader, but expects a lot. Discussions were interesting, I’ll give him that. But otherwise, don’t take unless it’s the last possibly choice. 5 discussion posts (each w/ it’s own reading) & replies a week with 3 supplementary essays throughout course. Too much.
he is ass
If you have the basic intellect to skim over a reading, you can pass this class with flying colors. This class requires an hour of work a week max. People complaining are likely those who don't try.
worst professor ever. needs to be fired.
A truly insane workload for an undergraduate course. Be prepared for over 15 discussion posts a week that reiterate the same idea. 3 long written essay/assignments. Don't forget to respond to your classmates either.
Literally do yourself a favor and take anyone else besides this dude. He tried to be chill but was so condescending & RUDE. Extremely tough grader for no reason. Worst professor, needs to be fired ASAP.
Assignments are so unclear I can not fathom how anyone actually completes the work, syllabus is unclear and although assignment due dates are shown, what the assignment actually is, is not. Don't take this professor for any class, clearly doesn't care about his students. Too busy telling anecdotes to improve his course.
I will admit he is condescending and a little self absorbed, however, almost papers were opinion based and had either no length requirement or 1000 word requirement. I gave almost 0% effort in this class, didn't read a single word assigned, and got 90-100s on all papers. If you can look past his unnecessary comments, I suggest taking this class.
The amount he expects you to read each week is ridiculous. There is nothing to write on the discussion posts either yet there are 15 of them per week. Take anyone else but him.
This was my second time having him and within that 2 year period he has not changed. He is a very harsh grader and can be very rude. He wants students to think like him and isn't open to listening to their opinions. 15 discussion posts a week is insane! Please be prepared for this course. If you can try to knock it out as early as possible.
Great course & teacher. Very organized and all assignments are clear & set by week 1. We had an "essay" due almost every week less than a page, fairly easy grader, easy to get A's on all of the "essays". Midterm and Final were multiple choice, very straight-forward, offers extra credit and test corrections to help with grade. Wants you to succeed.
Professor Hildebrand's class was by far the easiest Marketing class I took at DePaul. I'm not sure why his rating is low but he is very articulate in his lectures and deadline driven. If you don't like structure then don't take him. For this course we only had 4 paper assignments that were very easy. I was always late to class and still got an A.
I really liked him for the class I took with him in the fall so I took him again for this quarter. He is strict on deadlines but the expectations are clearly laid out. The 15 posts a week was a bit excessive on top of the readings but they were still manageable. The paper assignments were pretty easy. Overall make sure that you meet the deadlines.
I have had him for 1 week now and I can say that he is the worst professor at DePaul. I wish DePaul didn't make pointless classes like this mandatory.
Useless class, professor is very rude and condescending of other opinions even if he says he encourages other opinions. Take another senior seminar class if possible.
His class includes just the papers. I liked Prof. Hildebrand's class format. He wants us to write six papers throughout the quarter. The papers are not too easy not too hard, you can get full credit if the concepts are clear and you follow his requirements. His midterm is pretty easy as long as you read all the slides and the textbook.
Does not explain what he wants you to do and expects you to figure it out by yourself with no other help. His classes are discussion styled, but the information he is being expected to teach is better learned in a lecture style. He is a tough grader and expects you to do everything without explaining his standard. Be prepared for a lot of homework.
Provided very little feedback for coursework and expectations. Did not maintain a respectful class environment. Stated on the first day how he was open to all opinions, only to demean those who disagreed with him... in a discussion based class. Coursework was manageable and able to be completed within a reasonable timeframe.
This guy is a comedic genius. No wonder no one likes him. He won't cradle you as the woke professors will. You actually have to do the homework. If you have a good sense of humor and actually do homework, you'll love him.
This guy is ok. Rambles on and drags out things way longer than they should be. Professor seems very self centered and loves to talk about himself. Assignment prompts are pretty basic but expects a three page essay on a basic prompt. Would recommend taking this course with someone else and with someone who doesn't go on long rants during class.
He shuts down any ideas that don't align with his. Not surprising coming from someone who is that passionate about climate change. Take another professor. Every lecture felt the same. I could've watched a 2h Youtube video covering everything. His pessimistic attitude coupled with the black robe he wears everyday made this class depressing.
Assignments were easy, he required you to write a lot about each prompt but it wasn't that hard. If you do well enough on his assignments prior to the final he lets you skip it.
John Hildebrand is by far the WORST professor I've come across in my entire academic career. He is condescending, degrading, and horrifically rude both in person and over email. He is an unfair grader and expects you to pass a midterm with over 100 questions, being which at least 50 questions are things we haven't discussed in class. AVOID AVOID
Very awful experience
While an easy class, avoid if possible. Uninformative, rambles in lectures, unclear grading criteria and assignment prompts, and very condescending/ egotistical which directly impacts class participation.
I took this prof. in the past, it seems that he has changed his style of teaching. This class is discussion-based, the quizzes for this class are vague and sometimes do not involve any information we discussed in class, rather just random googled statistics. Although the class seems to be easy overall, I would recommend choosing a different prof.
Take another Professor! The lectures will put you to sleep and you are not allowed to use any electronics within the lecture (not even for notes). He will shut down any opinion that does not align with his own and he certainly does not maintain a respectful environment in class with his students. This class with him is a giant waste of your time.
Agree with other posters that this one of the worst professors I've ever experienced in my academic career. Lectures were boring, irrelevant, and outdated. As others noted he's extremely egotistical & disrespectful of opinions that don't align with his own. This class was my first at DePaul and it was so awful, it almost made me leave the program.
Take someone else! I agree with every review for this class. Not hard to pass but don't try to submit late and doesn't let you resubmit if you offer to correct mistakes. Not respectful or super understanding if there are personal issues. No toleration for tech & was outwardly rude/humiliated some students bc of it.
My last class@DePaul and this was easily the worst class and professor I've ever had. Repeat boring & NOT AT ALL engaging lectures for 90 minutes, not to mention he forbids computers. Very demeaning, has trouble with eye contact, read his syllabus and you'll catch it immediately. large amounts of readings 2x/week with quizzes on each. Shame on him.
idk. Heavy attendance. 3 Papers, you are graded on attendance for each class session and there is a quiz that starts asap and you get ten minutes tops. Ridiculous.
This professor gave me a 0 on my assignment and claimed that I used AI to write it when I wrote it in my own words.
Just stay away. All of the reviews are correct, why do you think he is always the ONLY class available in course chart while other professors are booked? simply he is a bad teacher. The worst teacher I've had in my academic life, yet you'll find him to be incredibly pompous and not caring what so ever. Blown away that depaul would still employ him.
stay away. there's a reason when you google his name you only see unpleasant things written about him. Basically a computer, not a professor who cares that you know the material. Nor does he have any care about helping you understand the material. I've never rated a professor before but this was just a crazy experience.
If you read, 1.) the class will be easy, and 2.) you'll actually learn something. He's a strong personality, but entertaining and incredibly smart. A lot of people on here say that he's condescending - sure, but only to those who don't do what is asked. I think that's fair, personally. You're 21 and paying to take this course - don't be so soft.
I took his Food and Cultural Diversity explore class and loved it. We got to go on excursions and eat at restaurants, I got to try things I never would have ordered myself. He's a funny and opinionated guy, so he's not for everyone, but I really liked him. Easy grader, but make sure you do the reading, or you won't do well on the quizzes.
Worst professor that I've ever had. Actual class wasn't horrible, I enjoyed the readings and lectures but he assigns way too many. Does not sympathize with students at all if you are going through anything and does not hide it if he doesn't like you. Docked me a point on a quiz even though I had the same answer as the girl next to me.
This professor was so worried about students using ChatGPT or AI in general when most professors at DePaul encourage you to use it. He is stuck in the past and lectures are very boring. Don't recommend it if you want to get something out of this class. I was disappointed by this class because it was my first graduate-level class at DePaul.
By far the MOST BIASED PROFESSOR I've had. Took in 2023. He once mentioned in class that television commercials typically feature about 40% actors of color and stated that this percentage was sufficient and should not increase. Also, went on several rants about how younger gens "don't know any better." DO NOT RECOMMEND FOR POC.
all I can say is what folks have said here is true
i am in my last quarter at depaul and I have never had such a passive aggresive professor in my life. I genuinely do not know why he teaches because he is constantly slamming our generation and thinks extremely low of all of us The material itself is not difficult but his personality is intolerable and he wonders why no one comes to class in person
Amazing Professor! Will be in my TOP 5 classes Class is never dull! 3 essays only 1000 words. Last one can get dropped if you participate in class! Professor seems caring about students and actually wants them to walk away with a different prospective on life. AMAZING
Jesus christ this prof is the worst I've had in my life. So aggressive and he has such a negative mindset about things, it just makes you want to leave the class. I mean the papers were easy to write, but like I just have never had a teacher be so disrespectful to students and so stuck up about stuff, it's wild. everything everyone says is true :(
Worst professor I have ever had, wouldn't recommend even as a last option. Quizes each day, tons of pointless readings, I took nothing from this class and wish I could've had a different professor. Heavy grader as well.
First impression was not good, but over the course of the quarter I grew to like him more. Great at his job, teaches well and does well to encourage discussion, but is not very personable at all. Very passive aggressive and set in his beliefs. Also was more of a marketing ethics class than anything else, albeit an important class.
Fun excursions, and the professor always tried to make things enjoyable—he even got us pizza after a bad meal. Lectures and readings could be dull, and quizzes were tough if you didn't read closely. He's caring, funny, and supportive, and his values made me feel safe.
Lots of papers, super unclear guidelines, and rude/sassy/mean feedback. When asking for help doesn't give any. Had two super long final essays for an asynch class (1500+ words) ?!? Don't like his attitude, made me regret taking this class. You can't get that many points so all assignments matter a lot more and points are easily taken off.
If you are a person that values having a relationship with your teachers and being able to ask for help. I wouldn't take this class. You're not getting that. He is very rude and inconsiderate of his students needs and doesn't make you feel comfortable to ask anything whatsoever. I mean? Did not make this class exciting or welcoming.
Honestly a great professor. Assignments were straightforward and simple. Cares about his students.
Avoid at all costs. Read the syllabus and knew I was in for it: says things as if he expects poor performance from students of this generation. Wildly passive aggressive. A question on the final exam literally asked why we deserved a whole 20 points, based on nothing else. Plead your case, that's it. Makes me wonder why some people become teachers.
