He is one of the most down to Earth and educated people. He makes everything applicable to daily life. He is fun and teaches with a smile. His grading is fair and reasonable. If you go to class and do your readings you'll be fine.
Its fun and well worth taking.

Brother Hilton is a really great professor! I enjoyed his lectures--they are all very interesting and he's both funny and spiritual at times so it's not hard to pay attention in them. I had to study quite a bit for his tests, but he's very helpful and has good study guides so if you put work into it you'll get an A or A- just fine. :)
Very good professor
Nice guy and tries to help the students. He grades pretty hard and the tests are hard. Requires a lot of time studying and homework. Overall a good teacher just harder then most teachers for giving good grades out.
Bro. Hilton is extremely knowledgeable. He is always happy and learns everyone's name. You have to pay attention and read and going to class you learn a ton! He brings in modern church leaders quotes and relates principles to your own life. You have to study for the tests but you have a great study guide and you'll do just fine! Easy weekly papers.
Brother HIlton is one of the most awesome teachers I think I have ever had. He is super helpful when it comes to aiding students in their educational endeavors. TAKE ANYTHING YOU CAN FROM HIM.
Great guy! He teaches a great class and is very spiritual. He is not difficult if you read and do a little study. He really cares for his students and their study and well being.
Great guy, good class. He can be an easy A, but the thing that sticks out is that he is not all about history. He has really good spirtual insights. Great at pointing out new things in passages we have all read before.
Brother Hilton is one of my favorite religion professors. He's genuinely interested in helping his students to strengthen their testimonies and I learned something new every day in class. The tests weren't impossible, and he provided a review sheet. The other assignments were purposeful and as such didn't seem a waste of time. Loved his classes.
Great teacher!!! Fun class and Brother Hilton's interest in the student's learning and testimony building as well as just pure excitement to teach made, me want to attend and the somewhat-challenging assignments were a privilege to complete because they were purposeful.
Brother Hilton is always willing to help you on an individual level. The weekly assignments are pretty easy, yet very purposeful and helps you gain your own personal understanding of the Book of Mormon. Take his class!
Professor Hilton is wonderful. He honestly cares about his students and makes a point to learn your name. His insights are always interesting and inspiring. Assignments help you learn to really study the scriptures. Tests are doable. He is GREAT! I highly recommend any class from John Hilton III.
This was an awesome class! It eases you into religion classes at BYU for those of us who just finished seminary. He really cares about his students; he had all our names learned by the third day of class! He applies everything to our lives and really knows the BOM. I highly recommend taking this class from him, you won't regret it!
I loved this class. Prof Hilton teaches very well and brought the Spirit into each class. The tests are a little bit difficult but there are enough points outside of tests to help balance it out. Prof Hilton is really focused on knowing and helping each individual change and become better.
This is the best religion class ever. Bro Hilton explains things in a way that made me so excited to come to class each day. There is a fair amount of reading, which can be difficult if you fall behind for some reason. The assignments were great - NOT busy work, the tests aren't a breeze if you study it will be fine Take a class with Bro Hilton!
He was an amazing Teacher! I learned so much in his class. There was about 1 paper due a week, but they really helped me. Brother Hilton really cares about each and every student. Best Religion class to date
Hilton...really nice guy. I enjoyed the feel of the class although he does encourage (in my opinion; I know others disagree) way, way, way too much class discussion. Tests aren't too bad. It was a relaxing religion class with some legitimately uplifting days, which is rare for some professors here.
I loved Brother Hilton and I learned so much from him. His class was very organized, clear, and always spiritually uplifting. He knew everyone's name by the second or third class and was always very friendly, kind, and helpful. Take his class.
Such an awesome teacher! I learned so much from this class. He is just such a good teacher. I feel so blessed that I took this class from him!!! He is so friendly, cares about his students! This is what class is like: Daily scripture reading, 2 midterms, 1 final, weekly papers, 3 challenges. If you do your work, study, come to class... Easy A
He is such an awesome teacher! The classes were fun and interesting. He wants you to do well. For tests, make sure you go over the study guide, practically all the questions come from the study guide.
I loved Brother Hilton! He is an amazing man and a great teacher! He always brings the Spirit to his lessons and makes sure concepts are understood. He keeps his lessons interesting and wants you to be in class. In fact, he'll email you if you're not in class just to see if you're ok.
Brother Hilton is a nice, funny, guy, but don't take his class unless you are really comfortable with the Book of Mormon. Classes focused a lot on spiritual aspects, but for tests you needed to know the most random details from the readings. Personally, I thought the class was too demanding for a religion credit.
Brother Hilton is the best!If you prepare before class, every class is guaranteed spiritual enlightenment! His midterms are a bit difficult, but if you use the study guides he posts online, you'll know exactly what to expect on the tests. I truly felt all his assignment were inspired. He's seriously amazing! TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM!
Hilton is a nice guy, but this class is VERY difficult for a Religion credit. His classes are spiritual and helpful, and he does give study guides, but the tests are INSANE. There are many more questions about geographical minutiae or tiny details than spiritual principles. Visiting and reviewing during office hours is a MUST if you want an A.
Hilton's a very nice guy but his tests are ridiculously hard, and covered arbitrary details about geography and stuff like that. All of the tests were multiple choice.
LOVED as a teacher. Knew all our names by the 2nd week because he shakes everyone's hand as they come in. Incredibly friendly, warm, & approachable. He genuinely cares about his students. He is really funny (but not in a distracting way) & also super spiritual. Super interesting and spiritual lessons. Gives study guides for tests. Take from him!!!!
Brother Hilton is one of the nicest people ever. I definitely enjoyed attending his class. The one thing I would be wary of is his quote section on the tests. They aren't well known quotes from the scriptures and identifying their author as you are asked to takes a rock solid plot line knowledge. That part hurt my grade. Great class though.
Fantastic professor! I second all the great things everyone has already said about him. Some have complained about the geographic/less spiritual details on the tests. I liked it. He helps you understand the book of mormon in more depth. Very spiritual classes, and he truly loves his students. Study, it's not bad. The slight difficulty is worth it.
Fantastic!! You know right away that he absolutely loves his job and sincerely cares about every single one of his students. He learns everyone's name the within the first few class periods and greets you personally every day. He has amazing insights and introduced me to many great resources for my personal study.
He is awesome. His lectures are concise and insightful. His tests can be a bit tricky, but if you have any questions you can always ask him during or after class. He is so helpful!! Of the best professors to take BoM from.
One of the best religion classes I have taken at BYU! He is very good to talk to you and make sure you understand everything. The tests are challenging, but not too bad if you follow the study guide. I feel spiritually uplifted every time I go to class and this is THE CLASS if you are looking to actually apply what you learn to your life!!!
Bro Hilton was AWESOME. I thought I was just getting a teacher that fit into my schedule but no. He has an amazing way of teaching the BOM that really strengthened my testimony.
Bro. Hilton cares for his learners. At the end of the day, he is more interested in what you get out of the class experience than how you perform on tests.
Professor Hilton is a wonderful, caring man. He always made himself available for questions and help. The way he has structured the class not only increases learning but gave me the knowledge and tools to have better scripture study in the future.
Couldn't have asked for a better teacher. He's insightful, clear, helpful and fun. The out of class workload can be tough just from the BoM project and book report, but no tougher than any of my other classes. Hope you consider him for your next religion class.
I took his Book of Mormon Honors class. It was easy but a lot of work. Professor Hilton is nice but comes across as fake. I personally felt no personal connection with him despite him trying so hard to be everyone's friend. Great class though.
Brother Hilton is a great teacher. Make sure that you do the study guides he gives you to prepare yourself for the tests. You will do well in this class if you keep up with the work and pay attention to everything on his slides.
I enjoyed this class and the spiritual parts of lessons. However, the tests were very hard (specific details and quotes) but at least the homework assignments were all right. He is a great guy and gets to know the students right away, which makes you feel welcome. I do wish the exams were easier though..
I love Hilton!!! He is amazing, hilarious, and so insightful! He really cares about each person's spiritual growth and standing, not the letter grade. All his assignments and tests are easy (he gives a study guide for each test). If you can, take it from Hilton! He's also a flipping author!
Professor Hilton is super nice and so funny! His class honestly isn't that hard as long as you are there in class. He talks a lot about the geography of the BOM which is actually helpful! The tests are very doable if you study the study guides and go to reviews. Don't miss out on an opportunity to have him as a teacher!!
Hilton is the jam. He is so funny but yet still brings the Spirit to every lecture. His teaching style is really open and insightful. I took 121 from him as well and it was awesome. Know the study guides and you'll ace the tests. Start your project early and you will really be able to get something from this course. It helped my testimony so much!
Best religion professor at BYU. He is a lot harder to take from, but it's definitely manageable to get an 'A'. You'll learn how to study the scriptures as well as what the scriptures contain. He cares a lot about his students and puts forth a lot of effort to help them do well. Take him if you can
Brother Hilton is a really nice guy and it's obvious he sincerely cares about his students. I had mono when I took his class which made it really hard to get to class on time in the mornings, but he was very accommodating. My only complaint is that sometimes I felt like I was in Seminary with all of the powerpoints and surface-level applications.
Assigns A LOT of 'busy work'. There were 3 or 4 one page papers as well as a 7 page paper... He does know his stuff however. Most mormons don't know a dang thing about the Old Testament at all so it was nice to meet a mormon who did. Overall, I liked the guy as a person but hated his teaching style. Would not recommend.
I will never have a better religon professor. I learned more about the Book of Mormon from Brother Hilton than any other person I met. He has you apply principles to your own life. He's harder for being a religon professor, but it is so worth it. TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!!
Assigns a lot of busy work and the tests are pretty hard. Great guy though.
Bro Hilton is the best. You have to go to class because attendance is graded heavy but besides that, its simple one page papers every few weeks and one final project. The study guides for tests are the exact same as the test and the T reviews make it impossible not to pass. Very caring and interested and willing to help if you struggle. A++ teacher
Everyone raves about him -- he's okay. Just didn't live up to my expectations. Hated when he'd say, "I wouldn't base my testimony of the Book of Mormon, but..." I would never base my testimony of the Book of Mormon on ANY of those things.
Bro Hilton gives more assignments than most other BoM classes and it feels a bit like seminary but overall I feel like I learned a lot from him. He's a cool guy and he really cares about his students.
LOVE BRO HILTON. His BoM class isn't the easiest out there, but its so worth it. He is the kindest person eva! Several online papers, a final project, two midterms, final, but the way he formats his class is great, and I got so much out of it spiritually. I was sick during the semester, and he emailed me just to make sure I was doing okay!
Honestly, he's a great lecturer, very entertaining and informative. This being said, he purposefully makes his course a lot harder than it needs to be for a 2 credit class. There a lot of papers and homework. Do not take this course unless your willing to work for your grade.
Brother Hilton is amazing! He truly cares about everyone individually. He gives a good amount of assignments, but they're really not hard. Really he just wants to see if you did them. He loves the scriptures sooooooo much! Sometimes I didn't feel like I was getting much out of class, but those were times when I was not very engaged. Be involved!
He focuses more on learning how to get more out of our scripture study than he does on details (though details are expected for the tests), and I love that! I hate religion courses that aren't spiritual and this one was --though, in future I think I'll not take his classes in the morning (easy to fall asleep).
BEST RELIGION CLASS EVER! If I could take one professor for my religion classes for the rest of my time at BYU it would be Brother Hilton hands down. He is an intertextuality genius and makes his lectures so interesting. He focuses a lot on the spiritual side of things but also the little factual things that help give credibility to the BOM!
He knows you by name and is a very fair grader. Lectures are usually dynamic and includes the class.
I absolutely love Brother Hilton! He has so much love for his students, and his enthusiasm for his job is infectious. His lectures are engaging and easy to follow, and if you pay attention his tests will be easy. Assignments are mostly for completion, he really just wants to see that you did them, and help you develop good study habits.
Brother Hilton is AMAZING!! I took Book of Mormon 121 from him and I loved it. So much so that I signed up for his Book of Mormon 122 class. YOU MUST TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HIM! Small papers every now and again but they are one page. You need to read the scriptures (duh), and only a few tests but TOTALLY manageable. He knows his stuff.
LOVE BROTHER HILTON. The best professor I've ever had. Tests are hard as long as you study for them.
Definitely LOVED this class!! Bro. Hilton is the best religion teacher at BYU. If I could take all my religion classes from him, I TOTALLY would! He knows all his students by name, and truly takes an interest in your success in your class. Tests can be a little tricky if you are not familiar with the story line of the Book of Mormon.
Brother Hilton is an awesome teacher. He knows his stuff and doesn't just crack jokes the whole time, he really teaches you what he knows. All of the grading comes from self grading (pretty much), so be willing to put in the work to feel comfortable with a good grade.
His value of student development and growth is inspiring. I appreciate his emphasis on establishing personal connections with his students. Through his adaptive teaching methods, I've learned what is important versus what isn't and how valuable the Book of Mormon truly is. I'm so grateful I had the opportunity to take his insightful class.
Brother Hilton is an awesome professor! I learned so much about the Book of Mormon in his class. The lectures are always interesting (even the Isaiah chapters), and everything on his tests are from the slides in class (which he posts online) or from the reading. That being said, his tests are very intense and you won't pass without the study guide
Professor Hilton was awesome!! He made everything easy to understand and held multiple review sessions for each midterm to practically give you the answers for his tests. His class is very inspiring. He teaches valuable study skills that I hadn't used before. He is a genius so don't be afraid to speak up and ask questions to learn more.
PHENOMINAL professor. Not one to take if you have a full load and want some spiritual sustenance on the side. Tests were harder than they should have been, and there were a lot of assignments and papers. That being said, he will work with you and help you get the grade you want. Lectures were very spiritual and often temporally insightful.
Brother Hilton is a great guy. He took the time to remember all of our names and makes his students feel loved. Being a returned missionary, I expected this course to be very easy, but it was not. He really makes you memorize a lot of little details and some lectures seemed to drag on. He gives great lectures overall.
He's a really nice religion teacher and very inspirational. Also super easy grader. I learned a lot. He's also really approachable and has a good nice personality.
Bro. Hilton is a great teacher who knows his stuff and he really cares about his students. He makes coming to class interesting and a good experience but the tests and assignments can be difficult so you have to be willing to work hard.
Bro. Hilton is amazing. Listening to him, his students KNOW that he knows what he is talking about. I thought I knew a ton about the Book of Mormon and the restoration... well I learned many new things every day. Be on time to class, take notes, do the packet readings. His study guides tell you exactly what to know for the test. Best professor ever
Brother Hilton was such an amazing professor. If you come upon the opportunity to take a class from him, do it! He is so in tune with the spirit, he always says the right things. The tests are pretty difficult, but he will help you every step of the way! I am so glad I was able to have him as one of my professors!
The class is challenge-oriented, meaning that he wants you to apply what you learn. Super easy tests, in fact he lets you take practice tests to study for them. His main concern is definitely not stuffing your head full of facts. Inspiring lectures, no tricks, no busy work, great class.
Fantastic professor. Very willing to work with students. If you are looking to take a BOM class, I highly recommend this. Feels more engaging and less like a prepared-the-night-before seminary lesson. Helpful for learning patterns, scripture study tools, Isaiah, and spiritual evidences of the BOM. Loved the class and Professor Hilton.
Definitely my favorite religion teacher so far. Super funny and engaging. I loved his lectures. My best part was he always extends invitations to us to put into practice what we are learning. Throughout the class he gives many ideas for things we can apply. I saw a lot of change in myself and appreciate what he did to help it happen.
I loved having Brother Hilton! He is one of the best teachers I have had. He takes the time to get to know each of his students individually, and I always felt welcomed. He is an amazing teacher, and I learned an incredible amount from him. The tests aren't bad. He posts practice quizzes online, and takes the test questions from that.
He gives a lot of reading, but that is kind of just how religion classes go, it seems. He prepares you really well for the tests and they are very fair. By that I mean that he gives you plenty of review materials (the same question banks that the tests are made from) to prepare yourself. It is possible to get 100% in this class and you learn a ton.
The only religion professor on campus I actively recommend to friends. Lectures are inspiring, tests are hard but BRILLIANT (they match the study guide perfectly, but not in a fill-in-the-blank way. You have to know your stuff!) Prepares, cares, and teaches to make a difference.
Best religion professor I've had at BYU! Brother Hilton gives amazing class lectures, truly cares about all of his students, and is a fair/honest grader. You get what you put into the class. I would take any class in the future that he is going to teach!
This class was very academic. There was a lot of information that provided proof of the Book of Mormon being an inspired work from God. Class was always enjoyable, Prof. Hilton is funny and engaging. He learns your name and cares about you personally. It's a tough class, but if you do the work and take the practice tests, you'll get a good grade.
So Brother Hilton was great. His lectures were very interesting and very thorough. I loved coming to class. I learned a lot of cool and interesting things. The only complaint I have is that there is a lot of reading and a lot of homework for an 2 credit religion class. There's a big project due at the end of class that take s a lot of time.
I'm torn on Brother Hilton. He lectures well and can be funny but this class was very intellectual and was a little more tedious than I think a religion class should be (had to memorize Old Testament geography, spent six classes on Isaiah but only one on charity). Not an easy A but a rewarding class if you're willing to work. USE THE STUDY GUIDES.
I enjoyed Brother Hilton! He knew what he was talking about and was a great teacher. He cares about his students. I learned so much about the Book of Mormon. I always enjoyed coming to class. But it could be a little challenging. My biggest suggestion is to review the practice exam questions! They make the tests SO much easier.
Brother Hilton's class was exhilariating. It is definitely difficult and requires time commitment: the readings are heavy, attendance is critical, and there is a large semester project. However, Brother Hilton cares for each individual student and his study guides make tests a breeze. His class was incredibly spiritual. Take this class from Hilton!
He had me when he started quoting T-Swift. Absolutely hilarious professor, yet at the same time he can really slap you with the spirit. I felt spiritually renewed from his class. He has a lot of reading for you to do, but as long as you do that and go to class, you'll get an A.
Love him. Dr Hilton is so easy to listen to and learn from. The Spirit is very present in every class, but the lectures are scholarly. The amount I understand about the Old Testament now is crazy. I found a deep love for the OT in his class. I'm going to find him when I get back to Provo to take another class from him! Plus, I love his kiddos.
Dr. Hilton was one of the best teachers I have had at BYU. You can sense the care that he has for his students and he views education the right way. I would take Dr. Hilton for whatever class he teaches.
I am not making this up: John Levi Hilton III is more faithful than Uriah the Hittite at the Ammon Citadel, more patient than Hannah praying at Nabi Samwil, more capable than Caleb asking the Lord for a mountain, more diligent than Baruch rewriting the scrolls burned by Jehoiachin, and more loving than Rizpah fending off the ravens. Great guy!!
i am not making this up. Dr. Hilton is more talented than betzelel and aholiab, more faithful than jehosaphat, more courageous than shiprah and puah, more loyal than ebed-melick, knows the scriptures better than josiah, bolder than micaiah, more in love with the gospel than david and michal. more powerful than tiglath-pileser the 3rd. great guy!
I am not making this up: John Levi Hilton III is more determined than Shalmaneser III, better named than Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz, braver than Obadiah, more regal than Abimelech, truer than Jerubbaal, controls his anger better than Simeon and Levi, and has better hair than Absalom. If you take his class, you will not have a strong start/weak finish.
Don't base your testimony on my rating but I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP: John Levi Hilton III's classes are most definitely not a no-go. Take a class from him and you certainly will find something to base your testimony on.
He was an amazing teacher. He made lectures really interesting and puts them in Learning Suite so we can go back. His study guides are really thorough for the test and the papers are not bad at all. He showed us a lot of tools to use for the future for scripture study. He also is genuinely super funny and gets to know all of his students.
I love me some John Hilton! Some tough grading, but makes it fun to learn the four Gospels. Get ready to work a bit, but he is a great, funny guy.
Hilton is super cool and nice, very loving. I take religion classes for the professors, not the class usually, and he's a great guy. Class is on the more difficult side when it comes to REL classes. Midterms are difficult (for a REL class), but the final is easy. Lots of reading, heavy focus on Isaiah chapters. Attendance is super mandatory.
Dr. Hilton is an amazing professor who cares about your success in his class. This class is difficult because many of his tests focus of specific questions like-who said what-what date... questions like this. But if you know the study guide and can get 100%s on the online practice quizzes you will know these little details.
Great teacher, take any of his classes! You wont regret it. You will have to work for your grade, but all his lectures are well prepared and inspirational.
Brother Hilton is a great guy! He is very kind but his class wasn't my favorite. I didn't learn anything in his class and his class was a little boring... If you are not a creative person, I do not recommend that you take this class. I felt like his class was barely above a seminary class level. He is a very nice guy though and loves his students!
Brother Hilton was my favorite professor last semester! His class was definitely not easy, but I would say that it is so worth it.. Make sure you start your project early or you will hate yourself at the end of the semester! Brother Hilton makes lectures inspirational and he's hilarious so I definitely recommend his class if you're willing to work!
Professor Hilton is the best teacher I have ever had. He is inspirational, knowledgeable, and knows how to pass it on. He truly cares about every one of his students and helps them however he can, in and out of class.
Professor Hitlon's class was a pretty normal religion class. The first test was super hard, but then he realized that and made a retake and all the tests were much easier. He's a little more of an intellectual thinker. I feel like he struggled to connect with the class at times but, it was a good class overall.
This was by far the best religion class I have taken at BYU (my 7th). The lectures were fantastic and planned so well. Especially during the virus when online classes have been so difficult and underdeveloped he made the experience spiritually uplifting and simply AMAZING! If I could I would take Professor Hilton for every religion class!
TAKE FROM PROFESSOR HILTON! This was my last religion credit and he was probably my favorite religion prof I've had so far. He gives you a very clear study guide, and as long as you fill it out during the lecture, the tests will be easy. Even though I've taken so many religion classes already I actually learned so many new things from him!
The class was mediocre at best. Tests are easy. Ridiculous time commitment that replaces spiritual boosts with deadline stress. Taken remote during covid. I had serious health issues the week a couple big assignments were due. He's not merciful with deadlines. 50% off everything late no matter what. Tanked my GPA in my last semester.
The lectures were really great and I did learn a lot. His PowerPoints were clear. However, the tests were way too hard. The first midterm took me over 2 hours. This class was great, don't get me wrong, but it was just way too much work for a 2 credit religion class.
Great guy. Great lectures. Huge time commitment for a religion credit. Tough attendance policy (1% off grade per absence, .5% deducted per tardy) *no exceptions.
I loved my religion class with John Hilton. His lectures are amazing and his workload is applicable and makes sense. He doesn't require too much work for a religion class and you really feel the spirit.
I loved Prof. Hilton's class! His lectures were the perfect balance for a religion class! He fills out a study guide for you during lectures that you can use on tests and the questions come straight from the study guide. He's an awesome person in general too! His class brought me so much closer to Jesus Christ and I can't recommend it enough!
Professor Hilton was amazing. Far and away my favorite religion teacher. He is so caring and learned every student's name by week two and greets you by name each morning. I missed class once and he emailed me to make sure I was okay. Assignments are straightforward and worthwhile. Tests are open book and open note, even the final. TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Fantastic Professor, very spiritual and entertaining lectures. Provides a study guide to fill out during lectures, and open note exams. Met with some of us for lunch in the cannon center. Accommodating of circumstances and accessible for questions. Not much work outside of lecture aside from the occasional paper.
The final is 120 questions. You have two journals, two quizzes, and a discussion post each week, in addition to projects. The lessons take hours and my journals were all four pages each week. It was frankly ridiculous, and the worst two-credit class I have ever taken. Not necessarily the professor's fault, but he didn't seem to care that it was 2 c
Celebrity professor with little value added outside of his name-recognition in Mormon culture. Not an easy A, way too much work for a 2 credit class. Way better than other celebrity religion professors, I really respected him a lot for learning the names of all his students. Wouldn't take again.
Professor Hilton's a great professor with great lectures. However, for a 2 credit religion class it was way harder than it should have been. There's a semester long project, a 5-7 page paper, a one page paper, and a 2-3 pager paper. The tests were challenging as well even though I never skipped class and filled out the study guide.
Solid lecturer in a well-organized class. Likes to pack a lot in his lectures with little room for questions - stay on your toes and take notes on the study guide during class. You can use his powerpoints on tests and 99% of the questions are copy paste from your in-class study guide. Homework is meaningful and interesting
Brother Hiltons class was involved. The reading increased my knowledge and bettered my personal life. There is a ton of work involved but if done build good habits with scripture and Gospel study skills that build foundations for our lives and help us access and live Gospel knowledge.
Great religion professor! Class is always interesting and funny and his assignments are always meaningful, just make sure you don't procrastinate them. Tests are timed but open note and you can easily do it if you are organized in your notes.
John Hilton is my favorite religion professor! He greets everyone by name and will send an email to check in on you if you miss class. He makes you feel seen and validated, no matter what your circumstances are. This class is like institute. It's a lot more relaxed and flexible. He teaches skills to improve your personal study :) Highly recommend!
I cannot say enough good things about Brother Hilton! His lectures are incredible, spiritual, and so interesting. He cares SO much about his students, he gets to know everyone and truly loves to teach this class. One big project over the year, but its a really great experience! He provides an amazing study guide that can be used on tests as well.
Brother Hilton amazes me with his ability to get to know each students name. I took the class back during covid and masks, yet he still remembered faces. His lessons are very spiritual. He always had interesting stories to share. All you need to do is fill out the study guide, then you can use it on the tests and get an easy grade.
Take from Professor Hilton! He gets to know everyone by name and makes the gospel personal. You work on a project during the semester, but you get to choose so just choose something you like and you'll enjoy it. All the assignments are pretty easy, and fill out the study guide to use on tests. He's super accessible outside of class too!
I absolutely loved Brother Hilton's class! He takes the time to get to know each student by learning their names and checking in with each person individually throughout the semester. He is so kind and caring. His lectures are so spiritual and I learned so much about the life of Christ. It's not necessarily an easy class, but I absolutely loved it.
Brother Hilton has amazing lectures that are Spirit driven. The assignments aren't pointless busy work; they really strengthened my testimony. Tests are open note. He learns each student's name and really cares about them. I cannot recommend this class enough. Take it!!!
Great teacher, but I felt like I was taking a 5.0 credit anatomy class the workload was so extreme
If you want an easy religion class, this is not the one for you. But I've gotten more out of this class then probably all of my other religion classes combined. Brother Hilton learns every student's name and genuinely cares about his students. The tests aren't hard if you watch the videos and take notes (open-note), but they are a little long.
Professor Hilton knew all our names and genuinely cared about our thoughts. I learned a lot, and though it's not necessarily an "easy" religion class, I felt like all our projects added to my understanding of Christ. The tests are not difficult but they do take nearly 2 hours to complete, so be aware of that!
I loved everything I learned in this class! Br. Hilton is a phenomenal teacher and you learn SO much from him. With that said, do NOT take this class if you are expecting it to be a lighter class. The workload is heavy and the tests are unnecessarily long. The two midterms are each a full 2 hours and the final was 3 hours. Also tons of assignments.
Brother Hilton is great. This class is not. You know something is wrong when a two-credit class is harder/more demanding that your other 13 credits combined. The tests are ridiculous and extremely time-consuming. Studying doesn't help much. I feel like the stress for this class was much higher than the spirituality and I'm happy it's over!!!
I loved this class! It helped me draw much closer to Christ and I personally really enjoyed the projects. It's blended so you watch pre-class videos that answer the questions on the study guide that you use on the test. It honestly isn't that hard, the hard thing can be time management. Brother Hilton is a phenomenal professor! Definitely recommend
Professor Hilton was an amazing professor who had a clear passion for his subject. Spiritually uplifting as a class, easy to excel and get an A so long as you watch the videos and use the study guide (which he will help you answer if you ask). Easy and great class!
I took the blended course and I liked it. Half the class was through pre-recorded YouTube videos, the other class period was in person. The class was very structured well. There is a lot of signposting about what is going on and where the class is headed, as well as what you are expected to know.
Professor Hilton was amazing! His lectures helped me gain a better understanding the life of Christ. I took the blended class which meant there was a lot of work outside of lectures. The videos were inspiring but if you are hoping for an easier workload, this is not the that kind of class. That being said, I would highly recommend taking his class.
I took the blended course option and that was insanely effective. You spend one day in class and the rest of the days of the week are devoted to average amounts of reading and 2 30-min videos made by Brother Hilton. He sincerely wants you to learn and gain from the class rather than perfectly pass it. I would take this class again.
Definitely take this class for Book of Mormon!! Bro. Hilton is an amazing teacher and I have learned so much in his class. You can tell he truly cares about what he is teaching and he wants to help you pass his class. I definably recommend him.
Religion classes should not be the most difficult to pass
I enjoyed some of Professor Hilton's lessons. The work wasn't too bad to keep up with, but I had a lot to do that took several hours a week. That wasn't a problem for me- I struggled more with things that were taught. There were lessons that were harsh, somewhat unkind, and not Christlike. I felt tense in this class and wouldn't recommend.
I took the blended version of this class so I went once a week (attendance mandatory) and then watched two 30 minute videos each week and had pre-class readings. Definitely takes some time but you have a very clear study guide you should 100% fill out since it is exactly what the exam questions are on. Super good class, would recommend.
Clear midterm expectations (with retakes), gives you a study guide, easy point weekly assignment, and one big project. Brother Hilton is funny, kind, and Christ-like. He seems to always work to improve the course and cares about what we take away. Would definitely recommend.
John Hilton is an amazing professor! He gives great lectures and talks about things that are really interesting. He also works to break down cultural barriers that Church members often have. Make sure you do the weekly reports!
I absolutely loved this class. I thought Professor HIlton did a great job pointing out things in the Book of Mormon I would have never noticed myself. This was a very uplifting class and I highly recommend. Workload is light but tests can go into detail but as long as your study guide is filled out you will do greatl.
I absolutely LOVE John Hilton and his class. I took both part one and part two of Book of Mormon with him and I would highly highly recommend. His lectures are so engaging and I felt like my testimony grew alongside my knowledge of the Book of Mormon. He is a wonderful guy as well as a great teacher and really cares about all of his students.
I didn't like any other religion teacher so far but Brother Hilton changed that. If you pay attention in class and fill out the study guide and questions he provides for you, you will be fine. It is a very easy class so it leaved you space and time to develop a personal relationship with Christ and the Book of Mormon.
TAKE THIS FROM HILTON! This class became one of my favorites because of Brother Hilton. Each class was so refreshing because of his humor but also the spiritually strengthening content. He gives you all the necessary tools during lectures to succeed on tests. He doesn't take attendance, but it's highly encouraged to do well in the class.
Best professor and class ever! I learned so much about the Book of Mormon from him! Don't second guess yourself, take this class, and enjoy your life! Then take the second half of this class! I would take this class over and over again if I could.
Professor Hilton cares about his students and wants them to succeed. A vast majority of the class finished with an A. Hardly anyone got less than an A-. Make sure you go to every lecture! Professor Hilton provides a study guide which has all the test questions on it, but you need to go to class for him to explain it and give you the answers.
As far as BYU religion classes go, this one was pretty solid. I enjoyed learning from professor Hilton even if the subject itself wasn't the most interesting to me. There's one big project but as long as you put in the hours you'll do fine. If you're going to take Book of Mormon you can't go wrong with Professor Hilton.
TAKE JOHN HILTON FOR BOM. He is the kindest and most tender guy. I want to know the scriptures like how he knows them. Literally just fill out the study guide (test are open note, scripture, powerpoint, and questions are taken from study guide), listen in class and you are absolutely chillin. If i could fit him in my schedule next semester, i would
Super nice, kind, and funny guy. He wants the best for all of his students. He gives you a study guide to fill out during his lectures, as long as you fill it out you will do good on his tests, which he will let you retake if you do bad on. Every assignment has meaning, and he is super knowledgeable about what he teaches.
Midterms + final are open notes and scriptures and based on study guides you fill out throughout the class. A couple of small papers + a semester long project, but none are graded harshly. Not my favorite class, but pretty easy. Professor Hilton and the TA were pretty responsive to emails and I was able to get help when I needed it.
I can't say enough good things about Professor Hilton. He is amazingly caring for each student-- especially for having such a large class. His lectures are entertaining, inspirational, and so packed with intriguing content. I learned so much in his class but genuinely enjoyed all of it. He also gives you everything you need to succeed in the class.
Brother Hilton is an exceptional teacher. He has obvious passion, expertise, and knowledge on the subject and makes it easy for students to grasp. Most of the course work is daily reading of the Book of Mormon, small weekly reports, and a whole semester project. Your grade is basically determined by your own diligence but supported by Bro. Hilton.
Dr. Hilton is awesome. I loved his class so much. Make sure to go to the lectures because all the exam questions come directly from the study guides we fill out during class. There are 2 midterms, one project, and one comprehensive exam. All is very easy to do if you are willing. Take him. You will NOT regret it!!!!
I have never met a teacher who cares more about individual students than President Hilton. He is INCREDIBLE with names and is always asking each student about how we're doing. He is willing to work with you for test retakes and partial credit. In every part of his class, it is CLEAR that his goal is to bring us closer to Jesus Christ.
I loved this class and Prof Hilton's lectures were amazing!! I always felt the spirit. Prof Hilton is very genuine, engaging, and caring. Weekly attendance quizzes with a short essay about your scripture study, a final project, and 2 midterms and a final that are online and multiple choice. An easy but spiritually uplifting religion class.
If you want to know if you should take this class, google him and watch some of his videos or listen to some podcasts. Easily one of the smartest people I know. All tests are open book and if you take notes properly and thoroughly, you'll be fine. He gives you a study guide to fill out as you watch the videos. 2 videos/ week to watch outside class
Hilton will inspire you and make you enjoy reading the book of Mormon! Lectures are fast-paced so come in ready to learn.
Great professor you take notes throughout the class which you use for the Exams and have a project you work on throughout the semester. You can do any project you like and have a lot of freedom with it. The lectures are important but attendance isn't recorded. I throughly enjoyed his lectures non the less.
Professor Hilton is absolutley amazing. This was probably the best class I've ever taken hands down. I've never really understood the Book of Mormon but Hilton made it fun and easy. He is also so funny and was always willing to work with students to get them where they wanted to be in the class. Best religion class at BYU, 100% recommend.
Book of Mormon wasn't my favorite class, but Professor Hilton was a good and invested teacher.
John Hilton III genuinely loves the gospel and his students. He has guided lecture notes and good reviews and his tests are open note. His lectures help you dive into the Book of Mormon and understand it better than just reading it does, but make sure to do the assigned reading so you know what's going on. Success is within reach with Dr. Hilton.
my fav religion professor you can totally get an A if you just show up to class, all the anwswers from the test are on a study guide that you can use on an online test that you can take from home. no books needed to purchase, readings are self-reported along with participation. its a great class take it!!
John Hilton is amazing! I loved the Book of Mormon before but his class took it to a whole new level. His class is super spiritual and I learned a ton. It's well organized and definitely set up so we can succeed.
Almost all the test questions were in study guides made by him. Spent maybe 20 minutes a week on work outside of class. He makes you do a 10 hour project. His lectures are really good as well.
John Hilton III is such an amazing professor! He cares about his students and loves teaching the subject. He is very knowledgeable about the Book of Mormon, and the way he teaches it helps you get out of it what you can't by yourself. Weekly quizzes, a project throughout the semester, and a few odd assignments as well as 3 exams make up the work.
Professor Hilton is AMAZING! The class is very easy if you show up and take notes during class. He provides you with a study guide that you fill out each day, and the tests are based completely off the study guide. Super funny, super insightful, and super spiritual! My testimony and knowledge of the Book of Mormon grew throughout his class.
Great class. Read your Book of Mormon before class and you're set. 2 open-powerpoint, closed-note midterms. "Designed to be easy if you've been in lecture and hard if you weren't." One 10-hour Book of Mormon project to work on throughout the semester. Weekly short essays (200ish words) about what you are learning.
Amazing teacher that sets you up for success. Has a study guide that goes directly with the exams. Get ready to write a 200 word paragraph weekly but that's the hardest part of this class. Definitely recommend!
The classes are good, but he had. 2 midterms and 1 final, all of them superhard and too specific, There is a lot of writing int his class
Professor Hilton makes this class super engaging. With helpful study guides and a focus on bringing us closer to Christ, I learned a ton without too much extra work. unstuckstudy was a great study tool to complement the course material.
It's insane how amazing of a professor he is; he cares so much about his students. When planning your schedule, I'd recommend incorporating his class in as a base point. It became one of my favorite classes and was a nice break from a hard days. Many spiritual moments. 100% worth it and much better in comp. to the other BOM classes I've heard about
If you can take a class from Bro Hilton you absolutely should! He's very knowledgeable and inspirational and does a lot to meet students where they're at and grow their testimonies. Attendance and scripture study is a grade, a ~1 hr report on what you learned from scripture study each week, 2 midterms, a final, and a 10 hr project
Professor Hilton is amazing! He made me love learning about the BOM, and his classes didn't feel like a chore to go to. He's funny, while also bringing the spirit. His tests were super easy if you pay attention in class and write down the answers he gives to the study guide. I genuinely felt loved and wanted in the class. 100% take BOM with him!
Professor Hilton is awesome. Beware the blended course, you have to watch lectures outside of the class and that can be hard to keep up on. Overall, he facilitated great class discussion and is a super nice professor. He was always willing to meet outside and chat about questions and life :) 10/10 recommend
Brother Hilton is my favorite religion professor by far! He is so inspiring, and through his class, I have grown closer to Christ than I have ever been. I cannot recommend taking this class from him enough! TAKE IT FROM HIM! It's a blended course, so you meet once a week and watch amazing recorded lecture videos. The exams are open note and book
Brother Hilton is my favorite religion professor by far! He is so knowledgeable, and I have grown closer to Christ than I ever have through this class. I cannot recommend taking this class from Professor Hilton enough! TAKE IT FROM HIM! It is a blended course, so you meet once a week, and the rest is online. The exams are open book and open note
he makes it easy to suceed, your grade is based on scripture reading, attendance & open note tests that are entirely based on the study guide he gives you to take notes on. he's interesting, cool facts, funny, cares about his students, he definitely brings the spirit but sometimes it's just too fast paced to really get into the spiritual side.
Love Professor Hilton! Very inspirational and made the Book of Mormon relatable!
Lectures are funny, engaging, and spiritually nourishing. Must attend and participate to get a good grade. He is willing to work with you if you reach out. Learns his students' names. Surprisingly accessible for all he does. Do NOT procrastinate the Book of Mormon project! ... "Wish granted" "Don't base your testimony of The Book of Mormon on this"
Brother Hilton is super knowledgeable and puts in effort to get to know everyone in the class. Very available for questions and adjusts his teaching to the needs of the students. His insights and stories were inspiring and he's funny! the study guide he provides is super helpful and really important to use as you follow along in class!
Professor Hilton was a fantastic professor. His lectures were not only funny, but so spiritually growing. I learned something new each and every day. The homework wasn't too bad, we had weekly reports with mini essays, but they weren't bad. Midterms and finals are super easy, open book and open note, with a study guide. 10/10 recommend.
Brother Hilton was amazing. he has a deep understanding of the Book of Mormon and shares amazing insights in class. The class is not very challenging with one 200-word paper due a week. tests are all open note, and he basically gives you the answers in class, all you have to do is pay attention to the lecture.
Prof. Hilton is very fun, kind and passionate. There are weekly 200-300 word essays on using book of mormom study strategies that he provides. There is also a 10 hr project. Personally, this class would have been a lot easier if I worked on my 10 hr project earlier in the semester. The tests are easy, but taking notes in class is too fast-paced.
He is so smart. He is a genius when it comes to the BOM. There are three tests, and they are all open note open scriptures. If you are in class and fill out the study guide, you will do well in this class. I definitely feel a lot smarter when it comes to the first half of the BOM! I totally recommend this class.
Best professor I have ever had! I want to take all of his other classes after taking this one. I felt so inspired after leaving each of his lectures, and the homework load was very easy. You write a 200 word paragraph of things you learned from the Book of Mormon readings each week, and then one 10-hour project that is graded easily. 100% reccomend
Most caring professor ever! He main goal is to help you gain a testimony of the BOM and makes the tests super easy so you can focus more on the spiritual side of the course.
Brother Hilton was a really good BoM prof for me. He introduced the BoM in an academic light while effortlessly keeping the spirit in the class. Bro. Hilton wants you to succeed so he lets you gear everything to your personal goals and has self reported grading for the projects (1 big project + weekly reports). Tests weren't too bad and open note.
If you show up to every class, you'll be fine. It's the kinda class where you have a study guide of questions and he answers them during the lectures. Then some of the questions are on the tests. He's extremely loving and genuinely cares. He made the BoM genuinely interesting. Definitely the kinda professor you wanna stay in touch with.
Dr. Hilton's class was not difficult but still spiritually uplifting. There is a requirement to study the Book of Mormon for at least 15 minutes everyday, and that's the hardest part of the class. My only complaint was that class was impersonal, but perhaps that's just because it was a much bigger class than my others.
I usually hate video-heavy courses, but with Professor Hilton's lectures, I was able to pay attention and understand the material. He is very understanding of his students, and the coursework is pretty light. As long as you fill out the study guide he provides, you can expect to get an A in the class (especially since you can use it during exams).
I loved Brother Hilton! He taught the Book of Mormon in a really engaging and insightful way without making the class too assignment heavy. You can use your study guide on the test, and the questions and answers closely match each other.
Wonderful class! 10/10 recommend
I loved Professor Hilton! His lectures were incredibly spiritually strengthening and you can really feel the spirit. He provides all of the material you need for the exams and midterms, and generally makes things pretty easy for his students.
I loved this class and loved how Brother Hilton taught it! I looked forward to going, and it helped me get into the habit of daily scripture study which I have always struggled with. The midterms are super easy, and he gives you a study guide to fill out while he lectures. My biggest piece of advice is to not procrastinate the project!
You will have to do a Book of Mormon reading response every week. Get it done early. I did it very last minute on Saturday's often and this was a bad idea. Otherwise, he's great. Very inspirational. He gives you the answers to the test in the lecture. There's only one major project. Manage your time well and you'll be fine.
