horridly hard, very tough grader. basically you either get an A or F
No Comments
He's awesome. Clear. Fair. and, for the record, I got a B, which is a good grade from babson Rhet teachers.
Hodge presented pretty tough information in a very clear way. You'll love what he does in the classroom. He is a direct liberal who talks about race, gender, class, and, yes you homophobes, homosexuality, but he's not preachy. I wan't down with my B-, but he was right in giving it. I learned a lot.
Hodge is a difficult prof. Don't take his class if you are looking for an easy A. If you want to learn something about writing then he is very helpful. Quite eccentric but very intelligent and interesting. So he pushes your comfort zone a little, welcome to the real world.
I loved this class. Definitely not an easy A, he expects good work and won't take slacking. But if you're interested in becoming a better writer, he's the only professor for it.
Great Teacher makes you think
Did not learn anything! Did not make the subject interesting, really hard grader... do not take the class
Hodge seems to think you are only enrolled in his course for the semester. Expect long hours in the 24 hr homework lab and maybe fighting back tears in class. However, you do learn A LOT and he can be extremely helpful and a resonable grader when you demonstrate that you have put forth the effort and get past his verbal abuse.
Jon Hodge is the****. Sure, his class isn't easy, but you'll learn more in it than in most any other class. All you lazy ****s who think he's a bad teacher just because his class is hard shouldn't even be in college. If you want to sit around and jack off all day go home and do it. GO HODGE
MY FAVORITE CLASS. Hodge is not easy but you will learn sooo much. He will help you master the concept of a thesis and how to structure your essay. You will not read, analyze, and write the same way ever again-- NO SPARKNOTES. You will really mature as a reader, writer, and speaker, and learn how to teach/persuade people through speech and writing.
Professor Hodge is by far the best professor I have ever had. I have taken his classes multiple times and will continue to do so. He expects you to work hard but his work makes you a much stronger and smarter writer. His class is not for the weak and lazy but neither is Babson. O ya and remember you can't be in NY and Fly to NY at the same time...
Hodge is one of the best professors i've ever had. He is not a mean person, but he will be all over you about doing the work for his class. He has a unique writing style that he tries to teach you. I found it very helpful, but it may be hard to adapt to his style. I find I've become a much better writer. I would definitely suggest taking his class.
I went into this class with no desire whatsoever. However, Prof. Hodge made it very interesting and fun to be there. It's by no means an easy class but it's definitely worth taking! I strongly suggest him!
Prof. Hodge is the best teacher at Babson. Grades very fairly. Class is very hard.
Prof Hodge is a great professor! I had no interest in the subject matter when I went into the class, however he made us think about texts much differently than we normally would and it was very interesting!
He does a very good job explaining. His approach is unconventional. Don't take him if you are homophobic or too conservative. Highly recommend! Only bad thing is that he takes forever grading papers and midterms...
Do not let his syllabus scare you! He may seem really strict at first, but he is actually pretty funny and lenient. Not extremely lenient but he will let you run back to your dorm and grab the book if you don't have it. etc. Prof. Hodge is also not afraid to speak his mind, which may or may not be good. It all depends on you.
Using his strategies for writing, I got really good grades in my other liberal arts classes that semester.
The ultimate college professor. You'll know that you're not in high school anymore, which can be upsetting for your first semester. I was so offended that I went from A's in high school to B-'s in his class. But that didn't last long. I finished with a B+
I don't know if he's learned how to teach by now, but I found him a lot easier than other people have rated him. He actually jokes about his rating on here, so maybe that changed his style a bit. I understood what he wanted and he was very helpful. He even had Skype office hours at 10pm!!! THAT ROCKED!
This guy is like no other. He's Eccentric but very helpful. Changed my writing.
Had him for Rhetoric B, was my hardest class first semester. Be ready for a class that takes true merit to achieve your grade. Take his class with a grain of salt. Though he is very critical, it builds on writing skills and makes your writing much clearer. However, I wouldn't take him again
Jon Hodge is the worst professor I have had at Babson. He spent the vast majority of class time ridiculing his students/telling us that we didn't belong in college. His office hours are over Skype, and he puts the video settings on so you can just hear his voice but he can see you. If you enjoy reading, writing or life i would not recommend Hodge.
Hodge is easily the most abrasive professor I've ever encountered. I had to mentally prepare myself for his class each TR. He spent 45 min of every 1:15 min class talking about how we didn't deserve to be in college. He then spent 20-30 min talking about his business. He "taught" for maybe 10 min, and by taught I mean cold called about the reading.
Hardest teacher you will ever have in any class guaranteed.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER.
Didn't really do anything in class, but sometimes ended up with bad grades with confusion. Picked him thought he would be helpful, but actually didn't feel learn a thing.
Hodge may seem like a terrible teacher for many students. He is a candid person, he states his opinion whether it's mean or not. If you can follow his directions and understand the content, I don't see any reason why you cannot succeed in his class. Also he is tolerant about absences. He doesn't really care if you come late to class. Recommended.
Prof. Hodge is a tough professor. Don't expect to cruise through his class. If you do the reading, come prepared to class and ask questions you will do well. Hodge answers emails in 24 hours and is available via Skype (awesome). While Hodge is a tough professor, I'm thankful I had him. My writing skills improved immensely because of Prof. Hodge.
Hodge is tough but made me an excellent writer. Tough grader but he teaches you how to think not what to think. Highly recommended.
In the four years I've been at Babson, I have not taken a professor like Hodge, who can so clearly make difficulties with writing and analysis digestible so that your work actually improves. I don't remember him saying anything about us not supposed to be in college [?] but what I do remember is how helpful and challenging he and his class are.
Prof. Hodge is by far the best professor that I have had at Babson. It is a hard class but it's interesting and what you learn has real relevance outside of school. The high expectations only make you a much better writer. He's also always available for help. If I could take him for every English class I have to take I would. Definitely recommend.
I found Hodge to be the same as Babson's other professors. It wasn't a cake-walk, but nothing at Babson is. I learned a lot and feel prepared for RHT 2
I actually switched into Hodge's class after the first day with another professor because my roommate said he was funny and had online office hours at 10pm, which is right when I'm writing my papers. So this was a good match.
Funny. Smart. Kind. Available. Loved his YouTube videos! Check them out at 'HodgeBabson' on YT to get a sense oh him...
I sailed through this course! Hodge had clear assignments, and if you went to office hours, it was easy to do what he wanted.
I dreaded freshman composition because I wasn't really good at English in high school, but Prof H gave step by step breakdowns of his assignments that walk you through what you need to do. Follow it, and you'll be okay. When he was unclear, I stayed after class and got the answers to my questions. I did better than I've ever done in English!
He's funny and helpful. His videos helped me a lot on YouTube. I could watch them more than once if I was confused.
Professor Hodge is a great professor who has helped me improve my writing tremendously. He clearly defines the assignments in class and if you follow his layout and "take the topic somewhere," you'll do well. Developing your topic to the level he expects is the hardest part, but, if you study your material long enough, the lightbulb will come on.
This was my best and most memorable professor at Babson. He was so scary and so tough, but I sat in for fun. Then when I saw how you taught, I was captivated, and I switched instantly, ready for the tough challenge. Best decision of my life. It was really mind opening and therapeutic to me. I never saw essay writing the same way again.
Tries to be clear but is not clear at all. No idea what he's trying to say
By far the worst professor at Babson. Do not take him if you want to keep your GPA up.
He was by far my favorite professor at this school. A tough grader but worth taking the class!
He might be a bit intimidating at first, but he's really not as bad as everyone makes him seem. He wants students to read the "Black Ink on the White Paper" - he wants students to analyse only by sticking directly to the text. He makes you read and think in a totally different way. I appreciated that only after the class ended though. Good Luck!
He has a very specific and strategic way to teach you how to write. If you get it, the class will be really helpful but if his style does not match with your writing style, you'll hate the class
Tough teacher and very crazy but he makes you work hard and you will learn a lot if you pay attention in his class. However, the class is very strange and it is unclear if his methods would work for other teachers.
He is very needy with formatting and how he wants you to do his assignment. Yet, he is unclear about the assignment. The readings and pop quizzes are straightforward. Bigger assignments- had no idea what he wanted even if the class asked him a million questions about it.
Prof. Hodge's flaws outnumber his attributes. The readings and movies are not virtuous, they are uncomfortable to talk about and analyze. His exams are very specific and unfair. His format of writing papers is too systematic and difficult to follow. He is a very tough grader, and thinks he is helpful, but at the end makes things harder.
the lectures are one of a kind and very interesting. You realize you had a very special class after its done and your writing goes to another level
Funniest professor I've ever had but tough if you do not keep up with work. Super easy if you pay attention/do what he asks. Very straightforward. Go to his office hours for help bc super useful!
Average teacher. Scares students by assigning a "checklist" on his papers and threatens to fail them if a "checklist violation" is found, but in fact he is an easy grader, if most of the checklist is followed he will give B+/A- for your papers. Gives you three free skips per semester.
Would recommend him for 1st semester RHT but 2nd semester is focused on wizard of oz and isnt engaging. Overall, wants his students to do well. Acts intimidating but is a nice guy & really wants students to explore different topics. Write clearly and prove your point and you will do well. Tells you exactly what structure he wants via checklist
The material in Rhetoric 1 was a bit more interesting than it was in Rhetoric 2, but he's great regardless. He has a hilarious and engaging class and personality, and while he may be one of the more difficult Rhetoric professors on aggregate, he is also one of the most clear. Whenever I handed in an essay I knew what I was going to get.
Highly highly recommend him if you actually want to improve in your writing and want a very interesting course. The whole course was based on the Wizard of Oz and the Oz mythology. It actually gets very interesting. Hodge is the best. His class isnt an easy A but SO WORTH TAKING. Makes you work hard and think. Grades harshly but reasonably
Prof Hodge is one of the best professors I have taken at Babson. He is a truly brilliant guy. The articles he writes are simply amazing and the feedback that he gives you on your essays is spot on. He is also very funny and super helpful. Would definitely take his class again though you should be ready to put on a lot of work and effort.
If you are not comfortable with philosophy, DO NOT take this course. Nothing you talk about in this course will ever have a solid answer. very dry humor and was painfully sarcastic. Most of us were afraid of him. We took reading quizzes nearly every day we had reading assigned, and he would make up questions off the top of his head.
In class, he is the best professor hands down I've ever had. His classes are funny and you learn a lot and he makes you a much better writer and thinker. However, you have have 20 emotional breakdowns in order to get there. I cried during office hours more than once. But somehow I took him again because he actually made my writing better.
Dont do it. The good thing about taking him is that he is very available outside of class. But he is often behind on his work and seems too busy to teach rhetoric. Classes were unpredictable despite his structured syllabus. His teaching style didn't make sense to me, and he was often very rude, which is why I will never be taking Hodge again.
Highly recommend taking professor Hodge as your first liberal arts class at Babson. After taking Rhetoric 1 with him your writing will improve tremendously and all future liberal arts courses you take will be a breeze. As absurd as his rubric for grading can be, you will be hard-pressed to get any lower than a B in his class if you can follow it.
Professor Hodge was my first class at Babson. He is by far the hardest prof I've had. The midterm is pretty convoluted and there are only 4 assignments. He makes you work for your grade . Luckily, he helped drastically improve my writing. But, I dreaded going to class each day since he is not afraid to grill you.
Great teacher and great guy if you get to know. His class his hard and you gotta read/participate. However, I can genuinely say its the one class that really opened my mind. He's super interesting and his lectures blew my mind literally every class. If you are a decent writer you can get a good grade in his class. 100% take him once while at Babson
Prof. Hodge is an inspiring teacher that has really changed the way I see myself and people around me through his Self in Context class. He really aims to expand your view of yourself and people around you. Be prepared to work though! He is changing his syllabus to make it a little easier.
Hodge's writing tricks got me higher grades in my other classes this Spring! ANd his online presentation during COVID was far above the other professors I had.
100% take. Took him for Crit inq. 1st semester (B) and then FAW2 second semester (A). Lectures are always either interesting, informative, hilarious, or all three. You will become a better writer and person. If you're sensitive or delusional, it'll be exposed in this class and hopefully you will learn from it. If you're not, you'll love him.
I wish Hodge taught upper-level classes because Id take them all! I never did good in high school English, so Im impressed he improved my writing up to a B+
I took both RHT1 and RHT2 with Prof. Hodge, and he's one of the best professors I've had at Babson. His classes were engaging, thought-provoking, and hilarious, and I looked forward to every one. I also definitely saw my writing improve tremendously with his approach. If you pay attention and put in the work, you'll get a lot out of it.
The way he thinks must be from the mind of a genius and he thinks we are all as smart as him. This can be intimidating, but you learn a lot. He has high expectations for his students, so stay on top of your work. Definitely not easy, but definitely worth taking his class if you want to grow as a writer and learn how to think critically.
Was significantly more rude after we submitted evaluations. Seems like he had a strict instructor before and has continued this chain of abuse. Hodge is by no means unqualified but needs to work on how he treats his students in private. The most useful takeaways from his class were annotated bib and his checklist.
Prof. Hodge is one of the most inspirational and influential professors you will meet. As long as you are willing to work hard and receive constructive feedback, he will help you explore your academic potential. He teaches you a specific way of thinking, and I use content from his courses in my everyday life (i.e. when writing essays, emails, etc.)
There were days where he would come into class obviously mad and take it out on the students. He does not use Canvas that much so it is hard to know what is due when. He often got mad when students would not speak up, but he created that environment in the class, don't know what he expected when he would continuously bring down students.
I took Hodge because everyone said what he teaches you will guarantee you higher grades in your other classes. he demands a lot, but I've already seen it pay of in my other classes where my writing grades have improved.
I took Hodge for both RHT 1 and 2. He is a professor who makes you work and wants you to think. His assignments are truly out of the ordinary and he really wants you to grow. My writing improved and his grading criteria helps you stay succinct and clear. He knows what hes doing and I would recommend.
Take his class. That's pretty much all I can say. Honestly changed my life and made me think differently about everything. Very critical at some points. If I could take his class again I would... and I did, if he offered a third writing class or I would have taken that too. I hated writing in high school and now I love it.
The difficulty is a 5 only because it's impossible to get an A. He straight up told our class that getting above a 94 is "Magic". At first I thought he was kidding but then continued to use this grading system of "magic". He will jokingly yell swear during our class but will then take points off for "professional misconduct", hypocrite
Intelligent man. He is pretty bad though and very disrespectful- take someone else
I learned so much from Prof. Hodge. His course is designed so well. It makes you think about life in a different way. I feel everyone needs to experience his course. However, he is very unclear with homework instructions and what he expects from you in exams and papers.
Great Professor who really expands your view on philosophy and different schools of thought.
John Hodge is the most interesting professor on campus. He's very funny and lectures are always engaging. The course requires a lot of critical thinking and he'll definitely challenge you. You either really like john Hodge or you don't, there is no in between. Hard work is required to understand this course but he's a great grader, you won't fail.
THIS PROFESSOR IS A NIGHTMARE. JESUS DO NOT TAKE HIM I BEG U. I am writing this as I struggle to finish this subject. I am an excellent writer,I have a published book. He grades low and has personal vendettas and is a lazy piece of shit on this planet. Please do not take him and smile, He is disrespectful, arrogant and frustrated with his own life.
He is a very interesting professor, but unless you want to watch you and your classmates be insulted to your face every class I would urge you not to take him. He is a genuinely smart guy, but he brings struggles in his personal life into class with him. There is clearly a lot going wrong in his life and his students bare the brunt of it.
He may be good with his syllabus content however, he is the worst teacher I have ever had. He is so rude and demeaning, all my motivation to work was completely lost. He counted my holidays when I was quarantined for COVID but he does not want to take classes online. Extremely disrespectful towards his students. Brings his personal life to class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! He made everyone in my class this year miserable. Every single one of us would wait outside his room until the very last minute before we had to enter the gates of hell. He is not clear on anything, and when you ask a question he is extremely rude, disrespectful, and demeaning!! No one talks because we are scared to.
Please don't do this to yourself, I have no idea how he ever received any positive reviews maybe when things were going better in his life he was nicer to his students. He has harsh grading criteria, insults students when they ask questions, and makes his students feel stupid. (yes this is Jon Hodge, he spells his name differently)
Prof Hodge made everyone miserable this sem. He NEVER gives clear due dates and gets angry when u miss them. He had an actual emotional breakdown in class and called everyone many things. He always calls us unprof but what He did crossed so many lines that day. He talks about his relationship situation more than the actual content of the class.
insufferable
He asks us to read so many books and all we do in class is discuss what we read. Then we are graded on a paper that is worth so much of our grade. Avoid this teacher.
He is intelligent but disrespects his students in every class. Carries his personal life to class and takes his anger out on us creating a hostile environment. He is disorganized you will never know when sth is due. He has no compassion or respect but demands to be respected. He thinks getting covid is an excuse to miss class and lowers your grade
Hodge is an excellent professor. I get the impression that most people who have given him a low rating are butthurt about some petty issue. He provides excellent feedback, and I appreciate how what we do in class is reflected on the final. The topics we study are actually very interesting, and he gives us a fair grade.
Professor Hodge is a very interesting professor that has a collection of interesting stories. His grading is very particular and it is hard to get high marks if you do not follow his exact criteria. It is hard to get a good grade but not impossible. If you really try in his class and work hard on the essays, you will di well. Go to office hours!
People give Hodge a hard time but his class has been my favorite this semester. I genuinely look forward to going. If you are an active participant and do the readings this class is very manageable. I honestly wish he taught more classes at Babson.
Hodge was one of my favorite teachers. The concepts in class were so interesting involving philosophy and you get to study movies to connect to the material. If you engage you'll love this class but if you don't he can tell. At least pretend to know his homework because he hates when you don't try. Just show up and apply the material and its an A.
Does not make a lot of sense. Not the worse but not the best
i didn't enjoy the class when i was taking it but looking back on it now, i'm actually happy that i had him as a professor for fci. i found the concepts in this class interesting and find myself thinking about what i've learned in that class from time to time.
awful man more than his teahing
John Hodge is the worst professor I have ever had. He instills fear in his students and has no regard for their feelings or well-being. I have never had such an awful time in a class. I did not feel comfortable emailing him, asking questions, or going to office hours because of how genuinely unkind he was. Never take this class.
My favorite teacher at Babson. Has a lot to share and may come off as mean or demeaning, but that's just the way he talks. Getting an A is easy if you go to office hours and pay attention to class discussions. Do not take this class if you don't like humanities (reading, analysis, etc) or don't enjoy reading. Personally learned a lot in his class.
PLEASE FOR YOUR OWN SANITY, DO NOT TAKE HIM! Although he is smart and you will learn from him, he is VERY DISRESPECTFUL TO STUDENTS. He makes students scared to come to class / office hours. He needs to learn basic respect and to be a decently nice human being.
Avoid this Professor at all costs. He sends you four chapters from one day to the other and he wants you to fail. Only 2 A's were given for all of his 3 classes. All the rest had a B or B+. WORST PROFESSOR IN BABSON COLLEGE, HORRIBLE TEACHING.
It was pretty difficult for me to grasp the philosophy taught during the class but his grading is lenient if you follow his instructions precisely. I advise students to visit him during office hours although he can seem intimidating. This class is not for the faint of heart but it has made me think more critically and become a better writer.
Hodge is a tough grader and can be frustrating at times. But if you pay attention and do what he asks you can do well.
His ability to convey material is poor. His rubrics for assignments are comical. They are a page of ramblings and you are expected to do a where's Waldo and find every point to hit within this page. The amount of awkward silences in this class was just a testament to no student wanting to participate. Interesting semester. Would not take again.
To those maybe taking the risk and are disillusioned by the good ratings, don't chance it. Smart guy, but that's the one redeeming quality. Projects did not help me become a better writer, and on the first class he walked in saying nobody is getting an A. Hope he finds a better hobby then putting down students. First class I didn't get an A in btw!
Demanding and petty. Advice is rarely given constructively, but instead kinda snidely and rude. Demanded we turn on notifications for his emails to justify him changing so many things last minute and being unclear. Constantly used his own writing as an example of perfection which we should all strive for. Not a terrible lot of work, but imo avoid.
worst professor ever. do NOT take him at all costs. I had perfect As but he brought my gpa down. most dangerous professor ever!
The worst experience I've had with a professor in my academic career. The professor was unclear about assignments, so students created minutes instead of uploading assignments onto Canvas.LAZY. Gave poor feedback, was at bowling during online office hours and didn't help. Used his writings as examples of perfection. The biggest narcissist Ihavemet.
Hodge is notorious for being difficult and pretty rude, but he is a very smart guy. His directions are clear, but he can be a bit insufferable at times...He wouldn't be my first choice retrospectively, but he also wouldn't be my last. If you're a strong writer and listen, you'll do fine—attention to detail is very important since he is very OCD!!
Hodge can be a tough professor, but if you put in the work and use resources like Unstuck ai, you can do well. It's a challenging class, but rewarding if you engage with the material.
Sabotaged myself? Understatement. Between tequila Tuesdays and misplacing my laptop (again) this class turned into a conviction. Readings? Only if it's court summons. If you're not partying like a Biden (and don't have a presidential pardon waiting) you'll crush it. I'm just shocked I wasn't dishonorably discharged from the class. - Hunter B ;)
by far the worst prof at babson. extremely disrespectful towards students and does not stop talking about how vulgar his homosexual eunuch life is. has absolutely zero respect for students and has incomprehensible guidelines for papers and assignments. i have no idea how this clump of cells is still employed. if you value your sanity, stay far away
Hodge's FCI class is not that bad. You need to learn how to get on his good side, but once you do, his class is a breeze. That's why I'm willingly taking him for WRT2000; I know how he operates. Learn to embrace his ridiculousness, and shockingly, you'll have fun. My only big knock on him is he seems to grade based on whatever mood he's in.
This was the first class where I felt genuinely lost, not because of the content, but due to the weird grading system and difficult assignments. The instructions were vague, yet hes expected specific answers. Unless you're an extremely creative, outside-the-box thinker, I wouldn't recommend taking him...That said, he was pretty funny at times.
Good if you would like to learn how to write better, but really only reason you should take.
Helped with writing style but was an extremely unclear and difficult grader.
I PROMISE YOU. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. SAVE YOURSELF. I'VE HAD HIM FOR BOTH AN OFFLINE CLASS AND AN ONLINE CLASS. HE IS EVIL AND WHATEVER YOU DO HE WILL NOT GIVE YOU ANYTHING ABOVE A B. ON TOP OF THAT, THE AMOUNT OF WORK HE GIVES IS EQUIVALENT TO THE WORKLOAD OF TWO CLASSES. HE IS ANAL ABOUT EVERYTHING. BLESS ALL WHO TAKE HIS CLASS.
No constructive criticism, put words in my mouth. Basically said it was impossible to get an 100... because no one is perfect... Averages 2 crash outs per class. Interesting stuff taught I guess, but his attitude and demeanor makes it insufferable to show up to class. Unclear assignments but expects specific answers. Thinks the worst of students.
I have never rated a professor before, but this time I have to. He waits until you have a complete draft with around 10 pages just to say he gave the wrong instructions and make you write again. PLEASE SAVE YOURSELF DONT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR
Literally screams at his students if they ask a question that he doesn't particularly “like,” therefore, no one even dares to participate. Forgets to tell his students he cancelled class when everyone is already sitting in the room. Sooo many unnecessary writing assignments of 5+ pages that he doesn't even grade or even count for the final grade.
