I withdrew early because I never really knew what he was asking. Very confusing!
The only way to get a good grade is to kiss up to him.
IF you can AVIOD HIM, teaching methods are BAD but talk in class for a good Grd.
This guy is so incompetant
Thought the class was interesting, but you have to really study for the exams
Tell him to get off his high horse
Likes his favorites... - if he does not like you you will fail
Impossible. This guy shouldn't be teaching.
Unprofessional, arrogant, and has a subjective grading scale
He expects a lot which many don't like but you'll learn a lot from him
Grading is subjective, but he's willing to work with you - - kiss his butt!!
I am embarassed that Grand Valley keeps this guy on staff. Run for your life!
very unclear on what he wants-very hard tests-very subjective-has favorites-ibut
Drop NOW! I'll graduate late just so I don't have to take him, he's that bad!
This guy it the worst teacher I have ever had. GVSU should be embarrassed!
THIS PROFESSOR IS EXTREMELY DIFFICUTLT, UNCLEAR AND SUBJECTIVE. STAY OUT!!!!!!!
IMPOSSIBLE. grades you down just for spite. Stay out. SERIOUSLY
Beware of the Research paper! His method of teaching is anal
Different teaching manner but pay attention and you'll get an A!
Grading is EXTREMELY subjective, definitely has his favorites.
Really hard. can't study for his tests. if he likes you then you will pass.
Hopefully you read these comments before the drop deadline.
Its not worth your time to put up with a teacher as bad as this.
I had him as a prof about a year ago I got an A and I did not learn a thing.
DROP THIS CLASS!!!!!!
Horrible prof-plays favorites, interrupts students, VERY confusing
You have no idea where he's coming from. "Am I making sense?"
I learned a lot from him and he was always willing to help!
Learned more in his class than any other, but he made you work at it.
Worst prof ever! Plays favorites, GVSU should be embarassed for hiring him!
Tough, you must play his game to win.
He's unreasonable and nasty, GVSU can't get rid of him because he's tenured.
All I can say is that he is a terrible teacher and DROP this prof immediately!!!
This guy is whacked. Get rid of him
dispespectful, unfair, tenured-that sucks
tenure rules need to be overhauled
take him to court and take his tenure away for god's sake!!!
crazy - horrible - subjective - worst teacher I've ever had - learned nothing
fire him
confusing, talk in class, has fav., know what he talks about in class for exams
No class structure, complains, learned nothing, NEEDS TO BE FIRED, DO NOT TAKE!
He is AWFUl! Unhelpful, rude, unfair, dispicable!!
Likes Participation, Very subjective and moody, The class is mainly theory
Too bipolar in his moods.
great professor, contrary to others belief... challenges you to learn
Am I making sense? Do you see where I am coming from?
Hated it! Having to sit through an hour or more of his is torture.

TALK IN CLASS AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE, TRY TO PUT UP WITH REPEATATIVE PHRASES
Excellent teacher despite what students say, I remember so much from his class,
Really Cunfusing to listen to. Poor structure to class. AVOID
He is very brilliant but you have to participate! It's the only way to do well.
I talked during class but didn't know anything and still aced my tests.
Has favorites, listen to everything he said and talk!! Then you will do well.
Tell me I'm wrong. Am I making sense? very repetitive, says book is wrong

CAN:T BELIEVE THEY HAVEN'T FIRED HIM!!!! WORST PROF EVER IN GVSU!
He's a bit odd, but you will learn from this class. A bit sensitive...
Very intelligent man... very bad teacher... seriously, tell me I'm wrong!
Very Repetitive, as long as you participate you will do fine.
Boring but knowledgeable. Only read sections he says-only tests these.
Avoid at all costs, very annoying person, terrible professor
Just talkto him and you will do fine
I practicaly failed all my tests but since I participated a TON I got an A!
Like an evil mix of Bill Cosby and Leon Phelps the Ladies Man. Do you understand what I'm sayin to you? Tell me I'm wrong!
Terrible. Wonders why he isn't promoted, because he can't teach
Worst prof ever! You know what I'm sayin'?! Terrible. Avoid him at ALL costs.
Horrible professor! The guy IS the ladies man! You hear me man? Tell me I'm wrong!!

In all my five years of college, he is the worst professor I have ever came in contact with.
If you are an HR major and are taking any classes from him DONT...Change the section now. You wont learn anything. Especially do not take labor and employment law from him.
If all you are looking for is an easy A this is your class. You will learn nothing. This instructor is obnoxious, does not handle questions well, and possibly could have taught the Enron executives with his misguided "real world" examples.
In all my years of college (more than 4!) the worst prof. EVER. Didn't learn one thing, terrible waste of my money, I think he's a disgrace to GVSU.
Good Professor, gives real life examples. Your grades will reflect how well you understand the concepts. I would recommend both the class and professor.
Awesome prof, funny and very much not a scantron test type of guy. If you are sociable and participate you will do fine. He does a good job of explaining.
He is very opinionated, but he is a fair grader. His real world example is something that will help me in the future of business. He is a very effective teacher. Everyone has their opinion, so it's up to you.
Horrible Prof. He distracts his own lecture by saying "Do you hear me man?" "Am I making sense?" "Tell me I'm wrong!" You won't learn much, don't read the book, just take notes. He also grades randomly. His tests are all essay and only have topics discussed in class.
this dude is nuts, tell me im wrong.... omg im gonna kill him if he asks me to raise my hand one more time, this is the most pointless class, hope u remember what he says exactly, otherwise you get it wrong on the test, good luck,
this is by far the worst prof i have ever had, gotta love it when he makes rude remarks towards you in the middle of his class, I WOULD NEVER TAKE A CLASS FROM HIM!
Possibly the worst class ever, with the worst prof. Didn't learn a thing b/c prof is lazy. Lectures are pointless, prof totally contradicts the book and did not help, just confused me even more everytime I asked a question. So glad I am done with this man, will never take a class w/ him again.
If it means anything, I went to the head of the MGT dept. and complained...that's how bad it was. He has no systematic grading system and admits he cannot lecture! He needs to retire asap.
Professor Hodge is the man. If you go to class and participate you will not have a thing to worry about. The best advice anyone could give you is to get on his good side and don't ever be afraid to speak up. He has a very unique style of teaching but in my opinion it is very effective.
He doesn't beleive anything the book teaches you, He teaches to you his opinion on matters. Class was boring, I can honestly say I didn't learn a thing in this class.
Professor Hodge teaches real world. If you have no experience in the workforce, he can be hard to follow. He expects you to attend and contribute to class. I think he is a good professor. He wants all his students to succeed in school and careers.
Really entertaining teacher. He teaches you what he wants, not what the book tells you. Gives hard essay tests, but show up to class and participate and you'll do fine.
If he likes you, then you will get a good grade. Just show up and read the chapters and take really good notes and participate and you will do fine. Don't learn much, but easy class, but teacher just makes you upset on his teaching style. good luck!!
Although I question how he determines grades, as long as you go to class, participate and understand "concepts" and key terms you will do fine!! PARTICIPATE!!! The paper is not too hard and presentations are more of just a way to fill time...not graded!
If you participate & take good notes, both from lecture & book, you'll do fine. Get on his good side, and you'll be even better off. He can get annoying because it's hard to follow his teaching style, but overall if he likes you, he'll show it in your final grade. Don't be afraid to speak up!
The only thing I learned is he teaches "concepts" and "big guy"!! outside of class Hodge is great.. P.S make sure he learns your name..because that's all you will ever here in his class (over and over and over)the book is a waste of money... because he teaches his own set of "real world concepts"
He is all about participation and it gets annoying sometimes, but if you go to class and really just listen and get involved, it is pretty easy. Not a lot of work is required, hardly any hw, thats nice!
he sued gvsu and lost, now takes it out on students
I thought he was great and im glad i took his class
Is this management 331...i guess this is the place to be, do you understand what im sayin sir, do you here me, come on now guys quiet down, do we get out at a quarter after or a quarter till, tell me im wrong, aint nobody rational, if you take hodge this is all you will here, he is terrible!!WARNING
the only one who would know website for his lawsuit would be the prof himself. Guess the only way to raise his rating is to enter info himself. Thats really sad!
Take notes!! Tests can be very hard and he wants a lot of detail, so make sure to read and study! Participation can help or hurt you, make sure to "help him teach". If he likes you, he'll make sure you do well.
some of these ratings don't make sense...listen, just listen to him, take some notes, and do what he asks (attend and participate) and you'll get a good grade and learn a lot. prepare to be entertained!
DR. HODGE ROCKS!!!
Bring a translator. This dude speaks fluent Arrogant. His idea of dialogue is, "Tell me I'm wrong, sir!" If you disagree with him he will be right. If he can't be right, he has the balls to say that you are saying the same thing as him. Even if you are saying the exact opposite.
By far the worst prof I've ever had. He bases your test grades on how much of HIS OPINION you put in the answers. Marks lots of things wrong that are really right so always go back through your exam when you get it back. You aren't allowed to disagree with him. The whole class is just based on his opinion of things, which is usually wrong.
You definitely have to write down what he says and not really base your thoughts on the book. He was a good teacher. He was very helpful in my learning. He does have opinions and you have to adjust to his different teaching style. Overall he was good.

His teaching style can get a little annoying....Just make sure you come to class EVERY day and ALWAYS participate. If you act like you like him, and participate, he'll make sure you get an A. Not the best prof ever, but i've had WAY worse
Do you see what I'm sayin' sir? Do you hear me? I teach concepts. Those three phrases you will hear over 30 times a class. This guy sucks. Worst taught class ever.
This is the most ignorant guy I've ever met. If he just taught and didn't ask "do you hear where I'm comin from?" we could finish the class in two days. He's an absolute idiot...an annoying one.
Entire class is his opinion and he is under the impression that his opinion is fact. Entire class grade is based on whether you attend, agree with him and his personal feelings toward you. Perfect class if you don't plan on using this informating ever again through out your life...waste of money, waste of time, waste of faculty. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
I find him to be useful, though the ay he teaches is a bit odd. He is honest, and you are allowed to discuss anything you desire to discuss in class. He is very opinionated and will not stop in telling you that you are wrong. You have to be able to handle him.
"Am I makin' sense class," "I teach concepts," "it's just my opinion," "hear me out class." ummm.... yeah, multiple that by about 83, and thats what you get for class EVERY FREAKING DAY!!! Horrible teacher!
okay... if you write down exactly what he says, and specifically ask what he is trying to say, then you have what you need on the exam. Yes he is very one sided, but if you agree with him, then you are all set. Make sure you talk to him once and a while outside of class, and give him feed back. trust me. he likes feedback! I would recommend him!
HORRIBLE!!!Am I makin sense big guy?Tell me I'm wrong.I teach management...this is all you will hear the whole class. He is the most arrogant **** ever & the worst prof. at GV by far.Not clear at all & contradicts himself constantly.Tests are not that bad, just write down what "he said" in class.Try to avoid him if you can!!!!
Terrible!!! Do not take him!! He says your grade depends on 3 test and 1 paper. The paper is a minimum of 12 pages and he will give you know help. And the 3 test are all essay. And DO NOT be absent. Everything on the test is what he says and he'll tell you every day about how he values participation.
His poor speaking ability leads to very confusing lectures; it makes you wonder if he even knows what he's talking about. Unless you have the ability to read his mind and write essays exactly as he would write them, your grade will suffer. Honestly one of the worst professors I have ever had.
Um, where to begin on him.... He is not clear at all, and tries to be funny. All you need to do is get on his good side, and talk during class. He grades on how well he likes you. Period. I sucked up, and never even opened the book, and got a B+.
Relax, attend, and participate, and you will be fine and enjoy Dr. Hodge. He is fine, most people just complain because he is not like their other professors.
He is the reason why I really struggle with tenure. What a jerk. Can you hear me, man?
After reading several comments from others that have had to endure "Little Richard", I understand your pain. I took a course from him back in the fall of 2000 and apparently he still handles the classroom exactly the same way. 3 essay tests and a final paper, no less than 12 pages. He did not like me. Ended up getting a C. My lowest grade ever. He
If you can come to terms with the fact he will never stop saying "am I makin sense?" or "fair enough?" you will be fine. Come to class and participate. THAT is what your grade is based on. Talk to him out of class and you'll score yourself at least a B regardless of what you get on tests and papers!!!
This man is a pompous jackass that changes the grading scale on a whim because he didn’t like the questions he put on his own tests. Also, he says “can you hear me?” a lot. In one class, I counted and he said it 79 times in a 3 hour class.
Just listening to him speak will make you want to lose your mind. He plays favorites like nothing I have ever seen. Will ask you to participate in class but wont let you talk because he enjoys listening to himself speak the entire time!
What a terrible class! Possibly my worst experience at GVSU. I cannot believe the **** lectures, tests, and random nonsense that went on. The class sucked too, too many stupid people always giving their opinions. Dont argue with this man, he is super arrogant! Awful, awful, senior class, no wonder the HR program is bad with him and McKenda
Hate him! He is rude and doesn't know what he is talking about. This is my second time taking him, hated him then and hate him now. He loves participation but the grade is in no way easy because you have to stop yourself from telling him off...all the time.
have you ever wanted to punch a prof in the face??? This guy is the most worthless space in the greater grand rapids area. If you show up and somehow get on his good side you can get a decent grade, but that is harder said than done! He is pretty much a ****, so take him if you want a hell of a class.
Watch out if you take this guy- get on his GOOD side RIGHT away. You will likely learn nothing from this class and he will grade you on a whim. Attend every class and PARTICIPATE, that's the only real way to do well. I recommend choosing another prof if you want to learn and be graded fairly.
All the bad things that are said are 100% true. He made my semester completely horrible. Dreaded going to class but have to show in order to pass. I would do everything possible to get out of his class. You will not regret it.
Wow...there are a lot of people hating on Prof. Hodge, but he is a good guy. The class material itself isn't very useful, but he makes it entertaining and if you attend and participate you will do well.
People like to complain about teachers and classes, but Prof. Hodge is a good guy. He tries to teach "real-world" stuff and his class is very entertaining. The subject matter itself for the course is pretty much common sense, so he tries to incorporate as much real-world stuff as possible. If you attend and participate you will do well.
Absolute worst professor I've had so far at GV. Grading is arbitrary. Talks non-sense most of the time. If I could go back and drop any professor I've taken, it would be Hodge. Worthless, worthless class...
Teaches based on his thoughts.
Absolutely the worst professor I have ever had, and I even got an A in the class! Completely subjective, grades based on whether he likes you, and does not teach a single fact. Its all about his liberal opinions and his own misguided experiences. I did not learn a single thing worth retaining, and I never wanted to walk out of a class so badly!
This man is the most useless prof you will ever find at GV. He doesn't use any sort of lecture notes or structure, he rambles, he's very opinionated and full of himself. He is VERY unclear and he is just purely a d*** Our 1st exam:4 A's:8 B's:10 C's:12 D's:10 E's. "Can you hear me young lady?" "Tell me I'm wrong" "Seriously!" He needs to be FIRED!!
Tell me I am wrong: He does not discuss much of 'the principles of management' and usually disagrees with textbooks: that sounds dangerous to me: especially his teaching really involves his perspectives and lots of opinions. A lot of discussions come back to some general, broad ideas about liberal management and to some basic psychology principles.
I'm surprised there's so many people that hate this prof!! Yes, your grade is based on 3 ESSAY tests, paper, and on participation, but if you take good notes, you'll have NO problem with his tests if you memorize the info. And if you talk in class, it's hard to get less than a B. I've had him now for a few classes and plan on taking him again...
Professor Hodge is not a completely bad person - just a horrible professor. Teaches basing on his opinions and shows signs of favoritism. I do not believe students can gain success from him and his classes. Also, he did go against the University in court back in 97 - and won - it's not hard to understand why he is still teaching.
Great Professor. He is funny and makes lots of jokes. He knows the subject well, and has alot of experience. His tests are mostly essay, and you really should read the book to do well. No real homework other than one research paper. Come to class and participate and you will get atleast a B. I will definitely take him again!
"Do you hear me?" - get use to hearing him say this cause he says it 20 times a class. This course was based on 2 tests and a paper, but he plans on upping it to 3 tests, to much material for two test. Need book, but don't need to read before class he goes over it all. He favors those who show and participate in class.
Hodge grades almost entirely on how much he likes you... make a good impression quickly and participate and you'll be fine. Don't ever argue anything he says and realize he's going to contradict other professors often.
I want my money back! I have taken Hodge twice and never learned a thing. Please, if you are a HR major do not take him! Luckily he liked me so I did absolutely nothing but talk in class and got an A...terrible way to teach! They need to get rid of him...he teaches according to 30 years ago.
Just to correct a previous post, he did win his suit against the university, but lost in the appeal - and settled with the university. GVSU tried to make a plea that involved him retiring, however he only accepted one that allowed him to keep teaching. He loves teaching and is passionate about it. He wants to see students succeed. PARTICIPATE!
"Tell me I'm wrong! TELL ME I'M WRONG!!!" Yes John, you're ****ing wrong!!!
Professor Hodge is a complete abomination. His opinion of giving feedback on papers is offering general advice to everyone in the class at once. Such as: "You all need to write more" and "Work on your transitions". Don't bother seeing him in office hours, all he told me was that I was a B student and that I am bad at writing.
He's mostly annoying but he's not a mean teacher. The only reason I would take him again is to have another easy class. There are 3 exams, paper, and attendance. It seems he makes up as he goes how points will be distributed for grades. He likes to say that he wouldn't like to put much emphasis on tests if we participated more.
Know the key facts from the book, show up to every class, and take notes when he repeats things. Nice guy. Easy class. Don't plan on learning much, just overviews of topics.
OMG. He is absolutely rude, all he talks about is how the economy is horrible, and how life is going to be way harder for us than our parents. Completely plays favorites, get on his good side.
Hodge can be intimidating at first, but not as bad as what some have wrote here. Smart guy with real world applications, not just theory. Tests are all essay and specific, one long paper, too. I would take him again.
This class was awful. The professor is not articulate or clear at all. He continuously goes on tangents during his lectures which makes it very hard to focus on the core material. While the professor is very nice, his teaching syle is ineffective. The class is primarily memorization and the book is not very helpful. I do not recommend this class.
He's very unclear about that he discusses. He would tell us so much would be on the exam and a lot wasn't. Prob one of the worst teachers I've had. Would not recommend
I don't know what to say really. He's confusing, disrespectful and a very bad teacher overall. If you do end up taking this class and you want a good grade make sure to participate in his lectures a ton. I mean, participate so much it gets annoying, the more he remembers you the better your grade.
Without a doubt the worst professor I have ever had at Grand Valley. Complains about everything including giving a review for the exam that isn't helpful at all. Avoid at all costs!
Terrible prof. Extremely frustrating to talk to. Definitely DEFINITELY avoid him if you can. I'm really not one to complain, but this guy was bad. Very condescending and will not let you finish your thought when he calls on you to talk.
Hodge just has a different teaching style that some people dont like. He only teaches things that apply to real life. He is very easy though, if you participate a little each class, i think its impossible to get bellow a B. I thought he was a good professor and i will take him again if i can.
IGNORE OTHER POSTS - he's not bad. Attend class, participate (nod your head), speak up, and you'll do well. A lot of my fellow GVSU students are whining, but the material is there if you take ownership of your learning. Hodge supplements the book material well, so you can come out with a good understanding if you put in the work!
Worst Prof in my 4 years at GV. Only way to get an A is to continually kiss up to him and stroke his ego.Tests don't really contribute to final grade, and are more determined on whatever he wants. Very frustrating class.I am shocked and embarrassed that GV has allowed him to teach more than 1 semester let alone for over 20 years.
Hodge got in a lawsuit against GVSU...and they settled. Part of the settlement was that he could still teach. That's the only reason I believe he's still around, because he's an embarrassment to the educating profession. I've lost all faith in GVSU after having this man as a professor...he's an absolute disgrace.
He's actually good. Class is entertaining and he's funny and knows his stuff. He's quirky (like most professors), but other than that I don't get what all the fuss is about.
Professor Hodge is great. Seems a little crazy at first but he is so knowledgable and loves helping students. Stresses student participation strongly. Overall good class.
He is bad - But not THAT bad. Go to class, sit in the front and make sure he remembers your name. One 15-page research paper, three exams that are all essay. He can be annoying but if he can remember your name and your face, you'll do well.
Hodge is a good guy. Need to know a lot of specifics for the exams (all written). Go to class, say hi to him, talk every once and a while. TAKE NOTES. He tells you whats on the exams. Tough grader on the research paper (have a chance to re-do it). Don't take certain comments too personal. Overall he's entertaining in class, just expects a lot.
Hodge is an interesting guy. He says "i hope you hear me" and "i'm very serious" a ton and attendance is mandatory so he'll walk around with a sign in sheet. The exams aren't too bad and he'll tell you exactly what's on there as long as you go to class. The research paper is a bit tougher but he lets you re-do it. Just participate and you'll do Ok
Take this review to heart. He is horrible in the sense that he will not teach you about management at all. He gives you every answer for the test so I guess its fairly easy, however, he is a wack-job. Very tough grader on the paper. STAY AWAY FROM HIM AS A PROF. He only teaches what he believes and nothing about management at all. Again, STAY. AWAY
SERIOUSLY. DON'T TAKE HODGE. Or, take him, if you want to hear the same stupid stories, "witticisms," and phrases LITERALLY EVERY CLASS. "Please!" x24. "Am I making sense?" x6. "Are you hearing me man?" x4. "I'm serious!" x12 You will hear these phrases on repeat until you are so sick of hearing the man talk that you knock yourself unconcious.
Not the most enjoyable can become annoying put he gets his point across and you do learn. His test are easy he tells you exactly what to write down( exactly what he says in class not what is in the book!)
Prof. Hodge is difficult to explain. If you are content with learning nothing about management, but would like a GPA boost, I recommend him. If you aren't one for sitting in class watching him recite his opinion on the textbook terms day after day after day, another professor might suit you better. I took this class for the near-free A.
This is my fifth year at GVSU and I am disappointed with John. If you want to learn management take someone else. John teaches it with his opinion and not what the book says. He grades harshly on the research paper. I visited his office hours, did what he told me to do, and still got a B- on the first attempt. You can redo paper for a second grade.
Hodge is a very interesting man. He is kind of funny but his lectures are boring. He is very specific about what he wants for your test which is nice but when it came to my SWS paper it had to be exactly how he wanted it which was frustrating. If you don't care about actually learning, then take him.
The 331 6-9 never went the full time, all the grade comes down to is, three exams and one 12 page paper, wants to help students however can become very annoying with his repetitive statements and confusing lecturing.
Professor Hodge was the most confusing I have ever had. He would go over the book just to tell us it was all wrong. If you don't write word for word what he lectured in class on the exams, he will mark it down. Has many sayings he repeats over and over again like "Come on guys", "Do you hear what I'm saying"
If you wish to learn the subject of Management then do no take this course with Professor Hodge. It's a painful class to sit through and all he does is bash the book and the author. You will learn Professor Hodge's version of Management and nothing else. However as long as you attend class and write down what he says you should get an easy A.
This class with John Hodge is so unbearable. I honestly thing this is the worst class I have taken in my time at Grand Valley. I don't think I learned anything at all except for random ideas that popped into his head.
NOPE. Do yourself a big ol' favorite and get out of his class while you can. Even though he's relatively easy, dealing with him every week isn't worth it. He is incredibly passive aggressive and argues with students if they don't agree with something or asks a question. Buying the book is also useless because he only teaches his opinion anyways.
Confusing, gave us his own definitions ( which you have to write exactly what he says on exams to get credit) and half the time is wrong with what everyone else the concept is. Also will not answer your questions and will interupt you when you are asking a question
