tests are all essay but if you go to class and take great notes the tests should be easy A's.
The teacher is very unfair to his students and is not well knowledged on what he is teaching. I felt i knew more than him and his coverage of the material was not done in a very professional or informative manner.

Excellent teacher with great command of the material, however his class is dificult but if you pay attention and take good notes you will do well and learn a great deal
Class is not easy. Must attend and take great notes!!!! Read assingments, study! All tests are essay, if you have good notes to study they aren't that bad. Great teacher, really knows history. Class is very interesting!
The teacher is very biased. Another student did more work than I did, but he was outspoken in his beliefs, he ended up with a far worse grade than I did. So if you don't agree with him keep your mouth shut. Be involved in his class and he will like you alot.
Extremely informed, and is truly fulfilling his lifes work...has a lot of passion, if you are just going to class to pass without work, do not take him!
Without a doubt, he is one of the best professors I've ever had. He has excellent command of the material, is an animated lecturer, and is obviously very passionate about the subject matter. He's always there for the students, offers clear explantions on anything murky, and grades fairly. Show up, take good notes, and you'll do fine.
This teacher is very passionate, and knowlegable. You have to take good notes. His tests are essay form so you have to know your stuff-so if you do better with multiple choice or T/F DO NOT take this teacher
Excellent professor. Very passionate about subject matter, expects cooperation from sudents, presents material well. Easy to talk to and always available for extra information. Test are essay but if you have taken good notes and done reading material should be no problem. Use Mr. Hollitz and you will not be disappointed.
very passionate, loves history, I really learned a great deal from him
I did not like this teacher at all. He does know his stuff though. He wrote the text book, so you are not going to just slide by. He speaks very loud and with a lot of enthusiasm (can be to loud at times). I studied like I did for all my other classes (briefly) and failed his first test. I ended up dropping the class. If you don't want to read and study, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
I enjoyed HIST 101 with him, and hopefully, you will have fun and learn a lot with him as well. He's always consider and ready to help students. *Tip : Don't be late and don't use cell phones during his class it really piss him off.
I strongly recommend that you take his class. Ive never had so much interest in history, ever, until I took his class. I took hist 102 over the summer and it was a 3 1/2 hr class! Take my word..youll never get bored with his lectures!
I would not recommend anyone to take this class. On his first midterm, which I did study extensively for, there were something like 32 "F"s in his two classes. I slid by with a "D" and dropped his class because he is way too critical in grading. I really feel he thrives on treating his students like children, after all, I was afraid to excuse mysel
You shouldn't take his class if you don't like history. He is really hard. I studied hard and end up getting C in his class. After first midterm there were on 12 students in class out of 35. I wouldn't recommend him.
Do not take his class. He is enthusiastic about history, but half of the students must have dropped his class because he is a so hard marker. Even you study hard, you would not pass his class. He is the last teacher you want to take.
He's a great teacher, very enthusiastic, a very knowledgeable, and wants his students to love the history. His tests are killers and it is hard to get a good grade on his tests and homework. He needs to lighten up on his tests.
I learned so much from this course. His tests are only hard if you are afraid to analyze things from your own point of view. He encourages independant thinking and critism of past government in an educational manner. He's not an easy A, you have to want it.
He is all over the place when lecturing. it is very hard to keep up with him. he tells you what he wants on tests and when you put that its wrong, trust me i've done it. he is just completely annoying and i know someone who had problems with him too and he had my neighbors father kicked out of the school just for trying to talk to him about him.
Very enthusiastic about history. If you ever decide to take his class you will see what I mean right off the bat. If you want a good grade you're going to have to work for it in this class. I got by with a "B" in his class, did all of the readings and I ended up doing fine.
I took this class and came in unprepared for my first test. I did not study much and thought I could BS my way through, I got a bad grade, but met with Mr. Hollitz and showed him I was serious. I got a B in the class after I actually tried a little.
awesome dude, i had to drop his class because of a schedule conflict, but i registered for the class again this semester and he was supposed to be teaching, but instead its some stuck up prick. total bummer.
This professor is all over the place from one subject to the next, constantly getting off topic. So people who already have a hard time learning history, i do not recommend this teacher. His test are mainly essay and not too easy. He does the longest 1 hour lectures i've ever had, doesn't make any sense at all.
Great Lectures but completely bias in grading and very full of himself essay tests are graded unfairly and is way to full of himself always lets class out late and complains if you are late I recommend if you can deal with a pompous ****
His lectures are hard to bare. I had to drop the class. He is all over the place. He goes off on random stories that have nothing to do with tests. I would never take this teacher again. It was one of the worst experiences I ve ever had.
He is great teacher especially since it is his book that he teaches. I found history very boring until I went to his class. Great Teacher. Hard Tests. Lots of Essays. Very strict but clear and understanding.
pretty hard class, he moves so much, he's extremely intimidating, essays long, and no matter how hard you try, for him it is never GOOD ENOUGH.
He's a hardass!!!!!!
Too much reading and writing, nothing but essays. If you have a full load and are working full time i would suggest finding a teacher who gives less work. He knows the material and is helpful but is also very unforgiving. I had to leave town for a funeral and he would would not accept my paper. All in all i received a D+....thanks.
This guy is ridiculous! He thinks he is teaching us something when he is a total loser at it!!! Who hired him??
BEST TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD! But only take him if you're really into history and writing your opinion on it. Mostly you are tested on what he says in class so your attendence is more important than anything. Never missed a day of his class. As long as you do that, you'll get an A.
I took Professor Hollitz for History 102. After the first 2 tests and papers, I ended up getting Cs on. By the last 2 essays came around, I worked my butt off and got As on the essays. After the final came, i realized I could not get an A in any way possible. I scored well on the final and he gave me the benefit of the doubt. Great professor!
Great professor, he really does know his subject and cares about it. Don't expect to get a good grade in this class if you don't pay attention. For the papers as long as you can take the information in the book and the lectures and analyze them together you'll do well. Speak up in class. He does an awesome job of relating history to current events.
He is very passionate about this class, and he knows what he is talking about. I'd suggest taking him as a last class though. For at least 3 weeks now, he's let us out late, which isn't that bad if i didn't have a class after his. Just pay attention, do the homeworks, and everything will be ok!
you can tell that he is really passionate about history. he teaches so that you understand. on the downside, when he grades assignments he'll just pin point all the things you did wrong or didn't do -- he could atleast praise us a little bit for the things that we actually do.
I LOVE history, but after taking Hollitz, my enthusiasm for it diminished. I could never stay focused in his lectures; they were so boring! He made the most interesting aspects of the class completely dull. He likes to treat his students like children, and his lectures are scattered and unfocused - so it's hard to take the right notes.
I took his class online. What a joke I tried my best im usually an A student B at the lowest. This dude doesnt help you! Or he critizises your interpretation and fails you for it. I might not understand what he writes but just because he thinks he knows it all F Him. Dont take this class. History changes so he is always wrong anyway
This guy is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is very passionate about his job and he loves history. On the flip side his class is a little hard, but in my opinion well worth it. You will learn alot in his class, and will get a good grade if you put effort into his class.
This class is hella hard. I wrote an essay about the subj at the book and I told him about what i feel about that and what happened and then he said everything was a fraud, God! who puts fraud on essays?
Please do yourself a favor save money cause you will end up dropping this guy! He acts like as if he is a literature teacher, he wants min. of 5 pharagraphs of everything you write, 3 full pages of paper is not enough for a simple 1 question homework! Didd i mention you have to study HIS little book along with the text book! STAY AWAY FROM THIS ONE
This teacher is talked about poorly but in all actuality is very interesting and helpful. He makes history come to life and is full of love for the subject he teaches.
This guy needs to take a speech class and a english class to learn how to write! His hand writing is NOT legible at all! And he asks for 5 pharagraphs for every question! Do yourself a favor and take SOMEONE ELSE!This guy is full of himself, i don't even know what teacher like this still exists!
I think the people saying that the class was horrible just don't like to actually go to school. I took the 4 week summer course, one of the hardest ways to take a class and enjoyed his very much. I hated history before this class. Interesting lectures (normally dont like lectures). A lot of writing, but it is easy material. STUDY for your tests.
4WEEK SUMMER: There was a lot of reading, 6 papers, and 3 tests in just 4 weeks! Despite the fast pace, this was the 1st class at CSN where I have really felt challenged, and actually learned something. This professor is one of the best, but he does make you EARN your grade. If you like to learn take him, if you want a free ride, take someone else.
If you are not interested in History and are only taking this class because you have to, Good Luck! He is really hard, but if you want to learn alot about history, I think he would be a good prof. to take from. It is not a class to slack off in or get an easy A.
I jus started and I already kno its going to be a loooooooong semester. He's rude, impatient, & already pushing his views down our throats. I'm going to have to stick it through =(
I took his 102 class way back in 04. Honestly, this guy is hard. You WILL see lots of red marks on your papers. A third of the class will probably drop after the 1st day. BUT! I encourage you to stick with this guy. He is passionate about history. Not only that, but taking his class will prepare you for university level courses.
This guy needs to either retire or find a job in the private sector. He has no clue
He is an excellent lecturer and clearly cares about the subject. On the homework and quizzes he does red mark poor grammar and typos but the overall grade is based on your comprehension of the issues discussed. If you can write and are interested in history, take this class.
The best professor I have ever had. Passionate, knowleageable, well prepared. You have to work hard for your grade. Obe of a kind. I just hope we could have more teachers like him!
I'm taking this class now in summer school. It is a great class that works great with your schedule because there is not an assignment due everyday and you can also choose which ones you want to do and which ones you don't. Granted if you don't like History it will be a hard class but he makes it interesting and is very passionate about the subject!
Best teacher I've had at CSN hands down. The class is NOT hard. If you pay attention and do the reading, it's not difficult at all. If you're lazy and want someone to give you an A for being you and doing nothing, then don't take this class. If you're intelligent and want to learn something, take this class. It's Awesome!
Hands down the WORST teacher I've ever had. I used to love learning about history, and he has ruined it for me. His class is really dull and boring. All you do is take notes for 2 hours, then read 2 full chapters at home. He grades your papers EXTREMELY hard and makes you feel like your worthless. Do NOT take any class with him.
I love this teacher!!! His teaching style is amazing. His tests are all short answer and essay so they really make you think. He makes History even more interesting. If your lazy do not take this class. He grades the essays really well. best teacher ever!
I HATED history before this class! I really do like this teacher. I will admit the first day I had already planned on missing the class because he didnt seem interesting but when you really get into the semester he is a teacher that you want to have. He makes history easy to understand and thats what counts
Mr. Hollitz approaches history in a way that is so interesting and thought provoking! I learned more about us history in this class than I have in k-12! one of the best teachers I have ever had. Work load is minimal, but if you plan on missing class and not keeping up w/ the reading you will not pass this class. A LOT is discussed in the class.
Great professor. He is clear, direct, and looks for interaction in his class. Follows the book and answers any questions you may have. Hands down, one of the best professors, this institution is lucky to have him. I changed my major from poli sci to history because of him. It's professor like this that make school worthwhile.
Nice teacher. Very informative. 4 papers & 3 tests for assignments. The papers are easy if you read and answer the question in detail. Tests are easy if you've read & answer question in detail. no m/c. Be detailed with him, he likes it. Class goes by quick when taking notes. Record him if it helps you.
Horrible Teacher! Grades ridiculously hard and it's near-impossible to get an A on any assignment in his class. Lectures are painstakingly boring and when there's 26 seconds of class left he says "Don't pack up yet." You've been warned.
Hollitz is not easy at all, but what makes make me upset is the fact that he is making a cut $ with us assigning books he wrote. Not cheap!!!
Bring a pillow to class so you won't slam your head when you lose consciousness. Bring a pillow for your pillow because your pillow will fall asleep too
The book is fantastic! I am a fan of Hollitz.
Dr.Hollitz should be teaching at Harvard to students who are interseted in America Hitory Doctorate. But not in our 101- level community college.
He is passionate about History, and I learned a lot from his class. He is not a teacher for those desiring an easy road. He sets a high standard for not only himself, but also for his students. Difficult as his class is, I learned more about U.S. History from him than from all my previous history classes put together.
If you attend class regularly and do all of the reading, you can definitely pass this class. Don't take if you're expecting an easy A. He is very passionate about history and teaching history. He's the most interesting history professor I've ever encountered! Took him for hist 101 & 102 and wouldn't have done it any other way! Great guy!
Dr. Hollitz is amazing professor! This class is not easy. He makes you work for your grade. The test are all short answers and an essay. He teaches history from a different perspective and it make the class more interesting. Take this class and be prepared to walk away with a lot of knowledge! Utilize his office hours to get studying hints!
Showed up to every class, took notes, studied hard for the tests and I would still pnly get D's on the tests. Horrible professor and makes you buy his book for this class, so he makes extra profit because you enrolled with him. Would not recommend!
Very knowledgeable and passionate profesor, but rubs it on WAAAY too thick for a 101 summer class.Ended up withdrawing. Lectures & teaching style are all over the place, grades way too hard on the written exams/ homework and talks down to students having a hard time with the material. Unless you plan on becoming a U.S. history major, STAY AWAY!!!
BE WARNED, this class is not your average 101. Hollitz makes you buy his ridiculous book that is made up of other books he has read throughout the years. His lectures and "notes" are all over the place and more than half the class was gone by the time we reached the final exam review. I am an average student with average grades and I received an F.
Very difficult. Your grade is on 4 papers and 3 exams. The papers are 3-4 pages each, and he grades you very critically on them just like the exams. Everything is short answer and exam form, even tests, so be prepared to write. A lot. You need to attend, read all the chapters, and study a lot with focus on the exact topics he outlines in class.
Passionate about history. Makes history more about the who, what, and why and does not really emphasize on the dates that the events have occurred. Essays are straight forward and are easy to complete as long as you get the info correctly. Taking him again next semester for Hist 102
avoid at all costs
I really want to try and learn in this class but he makes it so hard to follow along. He jumps from topic to topic and half the time it's irrelevant. I'm an above average student and after the first midterm his notes make me feel like an idiot. He is indeed full of himself and needs to learn to be respectful of others. This class is no cakewalk!
This teacher is one of the worst i have ever had. Been going to CSN for 3years now and this guy is the worst. His class is extremely boring not because of the subject because how he teaches and talks none stop. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
If you're lazy, avoid him. Don't expect him to be easy because you take 101; he makes you work. He talks the entire class & provides no notes/sheets, so you do have to MAKE AN EFFORT to listen & learn - like ADULTS. I don't like history, but I took good notes & got As on essay assignments. He's tough, but good. The textbook is one he wrote himself.
Run away. Fast.
Great professor. He is the department chair of History so do not expect him to be easy. None of his tests are multiple choice. All short answer and easy. So you really need to know your stuff. Not for the lazy. His own text book is filled w/ history from all points of view. Best class. Just wished he taught the higher history's too.
I dare you to take his class. He is the most awful, imprecise, biased, inflexible teacher. His lectures are dull, lifeless, monotone, and down right BORING! Join the class and take a nap. He makes you buy textbooks that he wrote. There are so many grammatical errors in his text I am embarrassed for CSN. All of his tests are up to his interpretation
A lot of people struggled with his class, but if you write down the notes he gives you and use quotes from his book when you write essays. I loved how enthusiastic he was. he made his class enjoyable. I took his summer course so it was difficult and i had to try but overall if i could take another history course i would take it from him.
He is very knowledgeable, but if you do not like history you will be bored to death. Very easy if you go to class and can stay awake for lectures. 3 short 3 page papers and three tests. Fairly easy if you can stand the lectures. Do not really need to read chapters nightly as long as you pay attention and take notes during lecture.
Took this class expecting the worst from reviews and was surprised. Hollitz was very, very passionate about his subject and very enthusiastic. Though lectures are long, he is very lively and keeps you interested if you listen. Pay attention. Show up, it's worth it. Notes are important! If you put in the work you will learn a lot! Would take again.
I have no idea what anyone is talking about. Dr. Hollitz is awesome, I loved his class, would take again.
If your'e looking for an easy class, don't take this one. He is passionate about his subject and forces you as the student to think critically and analytically. This is the first history class that I have ever taken that I actually enjoyed!
Hollitz is really passionate about the subject, and he gives as much information as he can during the time we have in class. You must read (especially the textbook he wrote) because he assigns essays on chapters, and asks questions in class. Attendance is practically mandatory due to the amount of material covered in one class. Overall, good class.
Professor Hollitz is simply amazing. He is there for any student who is trying, but don't take his class if you are not willing to work.
Something about the way speaks makes it very hard to pay attention. As a history class you either know the information or you don't, since all of his tests are short answers you'll only receive a passing grade if he approves of your written response, regardless of if the information is correct.
I do not recommend this class if History is not your strongest suit. This teacher while very passionate, he is an auditory teacher, meaning most of the notes you have to write comes from his mouth with no notes posted online. And you NEED to write notes in order to survive these tests which are all essay based. Avoid this class if not your major.
Definitely a tough grader when it comes to his assignments. Test ARE NOT MULTIPLE CHOICE. His exams require short answers in essay form. Unless you know your history DO NOT TAKE HIM. Does not use canvas. He lectures from beginning of class to end sometimes goes over. 3 essays- provides options. 1 midterm and 1 Final. GOOD LUCK PASSING HIS CLASS!!!
Has ridiculous class rules. No eating , getting up from seat, absolutely no side talking( even quick to help another student) Must read the book he wrote, completely I love with himself. Says the best questions are his own questions.
This professor makes it near impossible to pass. There is no study guide for anything and no structured notes. If you don't know it before you get to class you'll probably never learn it. If there were structured notes or even a study guide you might pass but not for his class non of that is available.
Professor Hollitz gives great lectures without sounding boring. As long as you attend every class and take notes from the board, you will pass the tests and pass the class. I have learned a lot of interesting things about History from Professor Hollitz and I will be taking him for HIST102 as well.
Syllabus gives vague instructions on what papers to write and when they're due, leaving him with a very small pile of papers given in. LOVES to talk and expects class to cling onto every word without rest. He encourages a group discussion, but it's, you know, kinda hard if one person takes up most of the lecture just yammering. No notes. At all..
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is difficult, he talks A LOT and doesn't let the students talk to each other. No groups , professor is the only one talking . He writes down the lecture for the day but he doesn't go in detail. Only 2 QUIZZES , 1 FINAL & 2 CHAPTER PAPERS(2 PAGES). He doesn' let you use the textbook in class, he does NOT like it. 2 books needed.
He talks like he's giving a villainous monologue all the time. It's obvious he likes the sound of his own voice. He can be condescending and refuses to post grades online or help you figure out what yours is. If you pay attention to the lectures and read what you're supposed to, you'll pass. Study hard for quizzes, there are written answers.
Fantastic, smart professor!
I'm usually good at history bc most classes are easy A's, but you have to work for a good grade. READ his own book AND the textbook (I didn't, & it backfired cuz some test questions were based off of it). VERY lecture heavy; the whole class is 99% lecture. Attend & take notes. But he's a funny, passionate professor. So read, participate, & study!!
He is great professor and will be willing to help you outside of class if you need it. His tests are mainly on his lectures, it is very important to take notes during lectures and basically if you go over your notes before tests and read the assigned chapters you will do fine.
Very intelligent professor. Tests are essay/ shot answer heavy so you really need to know the material but he is very clear in the syllabus and in person about what you need to know. Its up to you to study, he gives a great lecture but be sure to pay attention and take thorough notes or you will have a hard time.
Hollitz is lecture heavy. If you do miss class make sure to copy your neighbors notes. It will come in handy. He is straight forward and overall loved his class and lectures
NO extra credit, very difficult class
Heavy lectures! Hes an old a school professor. It is necessary to keep up with your note and write what he talks during lecture. No talking in class! no discussion! mo extra credit! All the test gonna be essay format which means essay question. Sevaral writing assignments will be assigned and submit it on time. Overall, it was boring!
He is the worst Professor I have ever had! all the class are just lectures , doesn't like to be disrupted. if you don't write your own notes during class you won't pass the class. doesn't like questions.
2 quizzes, midterm and final, and 2 papers with your choice of topic from a pool with correlating due dates. You pick which paper you want and turn it on on that specific date. Two sets of these, one due before the midterm and one after. As interesting as history can be, was honestly impressed with how interesting he made it. Uses his own book.
The class is lecture from start to finish and you need to write every word down because it will be on the exam along with specific information from the two books you need to read. Recommend taking notes on the books. The midterm and final are lengthy and you only have a class period to complete, which was the worst part of the class. Hard class.
I felt lucky to take his class! He is extremely smart, witty, animated and serious about teaching the subject. He commands respect in his class, but if you don't disrespect the class environment, then you wont have a problem. The class was actually on the easier side. His lectures are awesome. Just take notes and follow the syllabus and it's cake!
Test questions, paper assignment prompts, and essay questions on tests are very specific to the point you have to master the information that he teaches in order to fully answer the essay questions. Grades very harshly on writing portions. Only lectures. No other ways to prove what you really did learn from the class.
He assigned reading from 2 books, his book and a textbook, but the textbook you can get by with just skimming. He is very good about helping you understand anything you have questions about. Never any surprises, he tells you everything you need to know you just have to pay attention and it's not a hard class.
