Easiest class ever. Not always so clear when he's teaching, but will help you. Easy A, don't even need to go to all the classes. He also cares about his students.
This guy **** rules.
You don't have to go to class, but it would be helpful. He's a nice guy and teaches really well. If you don't understand something he'll go over it again. Don't really need to read the textbook, but all homework is from it. Tests are just like the homework, so it's in your best interest to do the homework.
Professor Houlihan is a great teacher! He makes sure everything is crystal clear to his students. He is really sweet and is always willing to help. The class is super easy too. Do the homework, the tests are the exact same!
Prior to this class, I had never studied Java. Had I have not taken Comp 150, I would have been lost. His lectures start off well at the start of the year, and become hard to understand later in the semester. Only take him if you want to put in work or are familiar with Java.
No calculators are allowed (you have to be a pro at division, multi, etc), Lets you retake an exam if you failed a test, Doesn't collect hw, Attendance is not mandatory after the first month, Friendly, Approachable, Doesn't give enough time to complete quizzes, I have had better math teachers.
He's a bit strange and makes awful jokes, but he's a pretty good teacher and it's a real easy class.
A horrible professor for computer science. I love programming, so at the very least I enjoyed doing the work on my own. But his class was incredibly boring, and for my friends who weren't interested in programming, but had to take it as a math requirement, the class was hell. It is also relatively difficult if you are not familiar with programming
Avoid this man for pre-cal! I took pre cal in high school and did fantastic. I got put into Houlihan's class and was constantly confused on everything! He does not teach what you need to know he lectures straight out of the book so coming to class is useless. He doesn't understand how wiley works. I love math but he will make u hate it!
Good guy. a little strange, but he really really wants you to get the best grade possible. He went at a good pace and you didnt have to attend every single class. his personality is a bit dry, but if you do the homework(which is kinda easy) you'll be fine
strange, awkward, and just plain bad at teaching. be prepared to teach yourself. thankfully i had pre cal previously so i was able to understand but classmates of mine were so lost who didnt. AVOID! take only if absolutely necessary
If you had pre-calc in high school, you will fly through his class. I took it two years ago and I remember enough to not even pay attention one day in class and easily pass with an A. If you've never had it though or it was hard, he is a terrible teacher. He explains things in strange ways and he's not clear. He does do re-tests though.
He is a really good guy. The homework is online but he doesn't mark it if its late. He tries really hard and if you ask him a queston on the homework he will work it out with you so you understand. You don't even need the textbook if you've previously had this class. I've fallen asleep in class and not attended and I passed with an A.
Take this prof only if you love math, have taken a lot of it, and preferably right before taking this class. Quite petty...He saw we did well on 1st 2 quizzes and decided to make them harder for no reason. He wanted to punish the class with no Final exam study guide because of the bad remark of one student. He will rush if you don't ask questions.
Not a bad professor, not exactly the best. He can be pretty funny and you don't really have to attend the class to get a good grade. Do the online homework and do well on the quizes and tests and you should get a B or A.
I had never taken Calculus before&was scared to death to take it, but Professor Houlihan did a great job breaking the material down into a way that made it easy to understand. He was always saying that the book made things too complicated&would only make you learn what he felt was needed. Highly Recommend.
This professor is relatively friendly. For a math class, MATH 108 is not bad. You do have homework that you should do every week but he doesn't check it. However he will randomly call on people to give their answers so it is necessary to do the homework. If I didn't have to take this class I wouldn't have, but if you do it's not bad.
This class isn't too difficult to begin with, and he is a fairly easy professor. Just understand the material, four tests including the final. Always ton of extra credit. And he did this weird environmental project too only worth 4 points, but easy nonetheless. Go for it!
I am pretty bad at Math myself, but you would have to be very stupid if you couldn't get an A in this class (I finished the semester with a 102 percent). You'll be fine as long as you attend class, he breaks down the material in an easy-to-understand way, and the material itself is very simple. He's also a pretty funny guy
If you've taken precalculus in high school, you will fly through this class. But I warn you, you won't learn ANYTHING during his lectures. Just study the homework problems on your own to get the A. They're the same problems but with different numbers.
Barely lectures.
He is helpful and follows the book a lot. He is kind of awkward but very willing to help you. Sometimes he makes things harder than necessary but if you are confused you can go up to him and ask him to clarify. He lets you retest if you get below a certain score.
If you know and study the homework problems, you will get an A in the course. This doesn't mean this class is easy though. Going to class will not help with grasping major ideas, but it will help with getting minor questions answered. Your grade in this class depends on the work you put in outside of class.
This guy is your prototypical math teacher. Pretty dull but her throws in some funny one liner jokes. He reads straight from the book so you really do not need to take notes and the test's are what is covered in the chapter. I dropped this class because I know longer needed it, but he is really clear and helpful in any way.
He doesn't actually have any degrees in general math. He has them in theology and computer science and it shows. Very smart and very helpful, but DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO COMMUNICATE THAT WHEN TEACHING. Mandatory online homework and test are average
I took him for both 117 and 118 because I do like the guy. He is pretty dry, but he says random goofy stuff that you wouldn't expect (how do you make the perfect margarita?). Joking aside, he is pretty clear and if you do the online homework, the exams shouldn't give you grief. If you ARE struggling, don't be afraid to visit him, he will help you.
Excellent teacher. Seems to be disorganized and unclear at first, but is exactly the opposite. Thorough in his teaching, a fair grader, and gave his students the possibility to succeed in his class. Doesn't care about if online homework is late, and allows for retest for a maximum grade of 78.5%, allowing each student to pass.
Houlihan definitely gives you all of the resources you needed for success. His notes on the board are helpful for homework and he often sends out emails regarding which homework problems are likely to appear on quizzes, and even study guides for the tests. I was very successful even as someone who hates math! Extra credit is given on most tests too
I literally wanted to cry tears of joy after walking out of the first class. I tried to take Calc 1 last semester and had a miserable experience because of the teacher and had to drop. John is AMAZING. I am so happy I took him. I seriously want to give him a huge hug because he's one of the best math teachers here. His exams are SO FAIR. I LOVE HIM
This prof is best example of profs who are not good at teaching. He's a nice guy & gives retakes of exams but makes it harder. He enjoys giving tricky problems and hw is very hard, and different from exams. Unless you know cal from before don't take this guy!He doesn't know how to explain anything and he does not appreciate your effort.worst prof!!
Not an easy A. Must do the assigned homework online and must spend time studying. The homework and exam problems are very similar. He's a very fair prof. and goes out of his way to help. Visit him in his office for any questions. Also, retakes are allowed and extra credit on the exams are helpful, too. Great professor!!!
I regret taking him so much, not only is he stubborn and does not know how to teach a class, he has no shame in failing an entire class. His office hours are somewhat helpful but his exams and terrible and he does not curve. He told a classmate of MINE, "I don't grade on effort" and "Life isn't fair". AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Very smart man, however, he is not born to be a teacher. He will move along very quickly with the material and assume you understand everything. However, he is realistic about the progress the class has made and will be willing to move back an exam or two if needed.
Easy grader. Tries very hard to give as many points as possible. 4 test. Lots of extra credit. Problems are online. Tests are problems with different numbers. He tries to make sure everyone passes and explains things many different ways. Extremely helpful in office hours.
Good teacher. Homework is online and there is not much but it is due the same day as the test. There's only 4 tests and the final isn't cumulative. If you don't understand the chapter, he will work with you and push the test back if he sees the need. You can retake any test if you do poorly.
I LOVED him, honestly I am terrible with math and I thought I would fail.. Test 1,2,4 are easy IF you do your homework and pay attention during class. Test 3 was really long and hard but if, again, if you did your homework (legit do it and understand it) you'll be fine. Final NON-CUMULATIVE. Helpful office hours. take take take.
Houlihan is about as average as you can get when it comes to most professors. He's a nice guy and definitely cares about math, but he's sort of mediocre in the classroom. Sometimes he struggles when trying to explain certain things, but for the most part he's on par. Just do the homework and ask him for help if you need it.
Take advantage of his office hours. He helped me out a lot.
Awesome teacher! He is very clear when lecturing and the rare occasions that hes not he will answer any questions that you have. Lots of quizzes but theyre easy if you attend class. He always has extra credit on the tests and tells you exactly what material you need to know for tests and quizzes.
I think a lot of these reviews are from people who have had previous experience in Pre-Calc. I did not. John was exceedingly unhelpful, rude and arrogant. Going to his office hours was a chore, mostly because he made me feel incredibly stupid, and was heavily discouraging me instead of encouraging, even though I was working hard. Do. Not. Take.
This class was one of the hardest that I've ever had to take. He is willing to help explain things if you ask during or after class, but during class, he can go off on tangents and make things less clear than they were before. He tries to get people to participate, but unless you're following along with the book, it can be hard to answer.
He is pretty boring. I suggest going to class but if you are really good at math I wouldn't worry about it. He has plenty of office hours to go to if you get stuck. Just make sure you do well of the tests because that is all that you are graded on. (4 test at 25% each) Assigns homework for each chapter, but it isn't too much.
This is the worst statistic class I have ever taken (I've taken 3 but needed a 100 level). This professor literally has the text book in front of him, writes everything on the board from the book, doesn't explain anything, and is so monotoned! Also, online text book is required, which is useless! 8 exams and homework. Avoid this instructor!
Be prepared to watch a lot of videos instead of lectures. Also the class is easy, but he makes it miserable.
His lectures are extremely confusing and not clear. If you're taking his class, be prepared to be teaching yourself basically everything. He has not been very helpful at his office hours either.
Professor Houlihan is a pretty cool guy. He's very nice, makes a couple good jokes during class, and tries to be as engaging as possible during his lectures. His lectures can be a bit dry and he mostly just writes things on the board straight from the book. The class wasn't too bad but expect quizzes every friday and a lot of homework on webassign.
In the semester that had Mr. Houlihan, I honestly can't remember a single time when he explained something without being asked. When he was asked, he rarely helped improve understanding of the material. It was obvious that he assumed everyone was as proficient at Trigonometry as he was and it hurt the class as a whole.
Very easy course. His lectures are taken directly from the textbook. His exams are very easy and he occasionally cracks a good, but strange joke. He fails to submit quiz grades until a certain time passes, for some reason. OK professor.
JOHN HOULIHAN SUUUCCCKKKSSSSS!!! He is one of the WORST teachers I've ever had. He didn't give about my class and didn't even bother to get to know us. When I went to his office hours he acted like I was totally inconveniencing him and is not very helpful if you have questions. Whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
John Houlihan is one of the worst professors I have ever had. For those of you that are not good at math and have to take stats for your core, do NOT choose him. His lectures are unclear, unorganized, and terrible. Though there are only quizzes for each chapter, he doesn't teach the material which ends up ruining your grade. DON'T TAKE HOULIHAN.
The tests are very hard and sort of irrelevant to what he teaches in class which makes them really hard. Lecture is long and not helpful. Lack of coverage of materials in the book. Many topics that are on the tests were hardly taught in class.
The exams and quizzes are hard. Avoid if possible.
Grade is based solely on four tests and lectures are straight out of the textbook with little explanation. Test and quizzes are hard and relate little to homework.
Professor Houlihan is not a good math teacher. He simply writes on the board and tells you to copy it then asks everyone if they understand and doesn't wait for an answer. I was never bad at math but with him as a teacher I struggles very hard just to pass the class.
He gives check-in quizzes every class except the day of the exams. You find yourself teaching the material out of class; he reads off the textbook so if you don't understand the textbook the lectures are not helpful.
I don't know why he has such a bad rating. He is not a bad professor at all. Yes, at times he says jokes that aren't funny but other than that, if you really want to do good in the class just sit in front and pay attention. He has very straight forward simple quizzes every class day except on the day of the test. The tests have extra credit!
He's average. His lectures are just him reading word for word from the book, but he occasionally tosses in a joke here and there. All his test questions come straight from the homework/book examples and are just reworded/renumbered. Go to his office hours if you need more explanation! Oh and he also lets u retake every test if you bad on them.
Quizzes every class (except for test dates and the class before test) but attendance isnt mandatory. His lectures are just working through examples in the book. I've taken calc before and I thought this was a great review of material however, there were people who have never taken calc and struggled. If you've taken calc before, you should be fine.
Dr. Houlihan was a great professor for me, however I am biased because I took AP Calc my senior year. All of his exams have extra credit (he tells you what the problems are) and are not too difficult. Make sure to go to his office hours and you will be fine.
Easiest math class I've ever taken; every single class (except for during exam day) involves a 5 minute quiz. If you've taken calc in high school, this will be a very easy course for you. His class is just him doing example problems from the book on the board.
Super condescending. I went to his office hours so many times and he never bothered to learn my name. He did explain things well, but the stuff he did explain just scratched the surface of what you needed for WebAssign (super hard, btw). He also expects you to have a great math background. I wouldn't take him again.
If there is anything to be said about Houlihan's class, it is that it is very boring. He is pretty accessible outside of class, but you have quizzes everyday except for the class before and after an exam. He lectures straight from the textbooks, but his study guides are pretty clear are manageable. He is very strict on borderline grades.
Prof. Houlihan is really just an average math teacher, kinda boring and lectures in a very monotone voice. The class is pretty easy but you get quizzes every day which are only worth 5 points so if you miss 1 or 2 questions everytime it will start to affect your grade.
Professor Houlihan cared very little about getting to know my class and stuck to facing the board, lecturing for the majority of the course. Homework is assigned every night but he does not count it for a grade so the only assignments that matter are the three-four tests taken throughout the semester. If you miss class, make someone fill you in.
I did well, but noticed that other students with weaker math backgrounds struggled. Lectures are fine but he is not good at explaining something in a simple way.
Beware! Take his class at your own risk. Be prepared to teach yourself for the entirety of the semester.
I would not wish him on my worst enemies. Simply put, the worst professor in all areas.
Basically the structure of the class is him lecturing/rambling for 5-10 min and then you split up into small groups and do a worksheet. It isn't that bad. His tests are straight forward. He gets all his problems from the end of the chapter. If you know how to do those you'll be fine. He gives extra credit and study guides for the exams.
John Houlihan is the WORST professor I have ever met at Loyola. He does not explain lessons at all. There are only tests in this class, and they are extremely difficult. There are calculator and non-calculator portions of the test, he makes everything so difficult. Dropped the class and took it with another professor and received an A. Dont do it.
WHAT OTHER PROFESSOR LETS YOU REAKE EXAMS?? John can be condescending but if you speak up and ask questions, he will explain things. I would HIGHLY recommend you avoid him as a professor if you are NEW to calculus. If you are familiar with calculus, ride the curve (which is significant), retake exams where necessary, & be happy.
I am usually decent at math but professor Houlihan is the worst teacher I have ever had. He answers questions with more questions and makes you leaving class more confused. The only reason I passes was with the help of my SI. The only good thing about this class is he did not count our final exam because too many students would've failed the class
This is by far the worst professor I have ever had in my life. I managed to do alright in the class, only by attending all the SI sessions. John does not teach anything in class, instead opting to give students worksheets and write the answeres on the board without explaining a thing. Doesnt answer questions clearly. Like he isnt even trying.
Worst professor at Loyola. He does not explain the concepts well at all, and just puts you in groups and expects you to learn it on your own. If you ask him a question, he will leave you even more confused than you were before. Not helpful at all. His "study guides" are useless and the exams are extremely difficult. Don't take him, you'll regret it
His class is 95% tests and 5% Wiley plus homework. If you don't do well on the tests, there's not much wiggle room for improvement. Houlihan is an okay professor but you have to teach yourself the material outside of class to do well. Do not take him if you aren't decent at math because you will struggle.
He is one of the worst teachers I've ever had in my academic career. He is not nice to his students and was condescending at so many points. He was unhelpful in office hours. The SI for the course was even unaware on how to do some of the homework problems which are ultimately the problems on the test. DO NOT TAKE!!!!
Need to put in a lot of effort into this class to pass. He lets you take retakes which is nice.
If you take his class, show up consistently, ask questions about everything, go to SI, office hours, and math club tutoring, otherwise you will struggle the entire semester. The homework is lengthy and assigned in huge chunks, but if you do the sections as he teaches, it helps a lot. I wouldn't take a class with him again.
This was by far the most difficult class - solely based on the professor. Most of the students in my class had already taken AP calc in high school so he barely taught anything. He would spend days working on the simplest topics and then cram the most difficult ones 1 day before the test. I would not recommend taking him.
He makes calculus soooo much harder than it has to be. Wiley plus is the stupidest thing ever and he is an awful explainer. I took calculus in high school and did well and he found a way to make it confusing. DO NOT TAKE
He essentially reads from the book, if you ask for explanation he rereads the section from the book. Goes through a book example but never explains how he did it. He lets you retake the first 2 exams and you'll need it. Difficult to work with, you'll have to learn everything on your own but still go to class for his groupwork assignments.
Professor Houlihan is a very nice person but he is not the best at explaining math. He explains in such a way that it seems like you should know the topics beforehand. He is a good professor but you do need to know a good amount of math to do well in his class.
Prof. Houlihan pretty much relies on group work or having students teach each other as a substitute for actually teaching. The tests are draining & the WileyPLUS homework doesn't prepare you for the tests. If you are premed, do not take this class, it will hurt your GPA. Even if you are good at math, I don't recommend this prof, you will regret it
He just reads off slides & puts us into groups to do hw. but he does explain well if you ask him Qs. I never took calc before so it was tricky. Tbh I wouldn't have gotten a B+ if it weren't for my bf helping me every other day with hw. He does allow retakes (77.5% max). some people say he answers Qs w/ more Qs, but for me it pushed me to to think.
Dont take it if youve never taken a calc class. One of my biggest regrets and caused most of my stress this semester. Its not gonna help your GPA looking back now I shouldve just waited to take another calc class next semester. If you have the option just wait. Ive had to teach my self most of the material.
Literally only relies on the book. If you find the textbook confusing, (most do) then get ready to spend the entire semester learning the material on your own or from a TA. His office hours are useless as hes just an extension of himself in class. He really cant seem to explain the material in a digestible way. Absurd amounts of homework as well.
If you told me that Houlihan's main priority was to get paid and not care at all, I wouldn't be surprised. The tests are basically the only determinant of your final grade, but the majority of the questions are ones that are much harder than his lectures. Definitely avoid if you can.
more than half of the class received a failing grade. Homeworks often take more than an hour and a half. Tests and quizzes have nothing to do with material talked about during class. VERY HARD DO NOT TAKE
He just reads off slides. Homework is hard and due the day you learn that topic and takes 2 hours to do. He's not great with feedback and when we struggled he didn't change teaching + said we need to change. Only positive of him is he lets you retake test if you get below 79%. Only way to learn is have someone who took the class before help you.
Worst Professor I have ever taken or even heard of. Might as well have a brick wall teach me calculus because it would be more effective. Homeworks often take as much time as a weeks worth of classes, and the tests dont even have any of the material on those HWs. Lectures are useless and he is condescending.
Don't take him! Don't take him! He reads off the powerpoint and doesn't answer any questions we have. His exams have nothing to do with what the powerpoint we go over. He doesn't care that the first exam average was a 50%. If you care about your gpa don't take him.
Absolutely don't take him! I took calc in hs and felt very confident with the material, yet I had to work super hard to get an A. His lectures are useless, the HW isn't over what he lectured over, and somehow the tests don't cover the material from either. 2 exams and the final, each test is worth 25% of your grade. Please avoid him for your sanity
Absolutely awful! His tests aren't reflective of the class material whatsoever and his 'lectures' are just reading from powerpoints that will never help you. I had to rely on the SI AND hire an additional tutor just to get a B. Do NOT take this professor!
Tbh I couldnt imagine dealing with him for a whole semester, I fell asleep almost every class. He lectures from PowerPoints, and you learn most from the homeworks. If you pay attention, do the groupworks, and learn from the book/hw then youll be fine and get a B or higher at minimum. Take someone else, it would be better than him.
Homework doesnt count and everything is based off of tests. You either pass or fail. Read one portion from the book and study on your own. No explanation.
His teaching style is not only ineffective but lazy. He assigns homework on subjects he has not taught and when people ask for help, he simply says that they need a tutor and send them to someone else to teach. If I wanted to teach myself calculous then I would have taken it over zoom.
Okay Ill be honest. The first week I came to class I loathed his teaching, but after a while something in me encouraged me to try harder. When I felt troubled he would right away explain the answer and how to get it. He calls on you to answer the question on the board and will ask if you dont understand. Hes very kind and funny.
I am not sure if he even knows what he is teaching. He is useless when asking questions and can't respond to emails in a timely manner. Honestly one of the worst calc classes I have taken. If I didn't need the credit I would have dropped day 1. He lectures in the most confusing way possible and doesn't explain anything.
At first I thought that I was going to dread this class, but in the end, he turned out to be very considerate of each student's needs. He will walk around the room, sit next to you and help you through problems. He's good at coming up with problems, knows what he's doing, lectures are bland for the most part but he's good at clearing them up.
Found some way to turn Math 100 into the most difficult class ever..... When you think you're right, you're actually wrong and he does a horrible job of helping you understand the mistakes you made or the content. Don't take
I took this class because I struggle with math and this was the “easiest” option. I went to Houlihan for help and he repeatedly told me to “deal with it” when I stressed my struggle. He grew annoyed when I asked questions in class. He wastes times in lectures, he goes through content too quickly, and makes passive aggressive comments.
A lot of the material you will need to study/learn outside of class, but it's not too difficult if you're willing to put a solid amount of extra work in. The exams are very similar to the group work/homework, actually slightly easier, and they were usually fairly straight-forward.
Grade is only based on 4 tests, even though he doesn't know how to teach. Do not take if you struggle with math.
The definition of absolutely fantastic and I will really miss not having him for class next fall. I sincerely hope to cross paths with this wonderful man again. It actually made me sad to see someone post a poor review of him because he really works hard for his students.
The class itself is hard so be ready, but overall I thought he explained things well. The entire class is 4 exams, online homework, and in-class group assignments. After the first few weeks I was going to drop the class, but I started studying a bit more and ended up with an A-. He's a good professor if you're willing to study outside of class.
Extra credit almost everyday! Barely any tests and only Hw which he grades as participation. Easyyyyy A! Best Calc teacher!
I had to drop his class because of his poor teaching tactics. He would talk to the board and never turn around to make sure everyone is understanding it. Avoid his classes
Houlihan is a very kind man, but if youre bad at math then I recommend choosing a different teacher. Khan academy carried me through this class. He tries his best but is a very below average teacher. Definitely hates his job and cant wait to retire but I dont really blame him. conclusion: NICE GUY, BAD TEACHER
Super easy if you have a good grasp on math. Lots of group work and light on lectures so most of your learning will be from you peers on group worksheets. he walks around and gives very helpful mini lessons if you ask him questions about group work. Attendance is never taken and not much work is submitted. leaves the class being pretty easy
He clearly knows math, just not how to teach it. If you took percal in high school and understood it, you'll be completely fine. If you're actually counting on him to teach you material, find a different teacher. He teaches a topic each class, does in-class group work, and there's hw. 3 tests and a final. Study guides are exactly like tests.
Fosters a learning environment. You have to use Wiley's Plus just for like every other class for homework. For in class he'll give lectures and then the rest is group work. He walks around and helps people. If you don't understand something during his lecture, ask! People complain about not understanding things and they don't ask questions.
Honestly I enjoyed having him as my teacher. He knows how to explain things step by step, and he does it again if someone needs it. He indiviually comes by during group work and helps you, so you can understand the work. Wileyplus is not only accuracy, it is completion too. He is a great prof, i reccomend!
I really struggled with John. He is a nice guy but is terrible at teaching. Lots of wileyplus homework that is unnecessary. Only good thing is he gives extra credits and retakes to tests.
No quizzes, few exams
He is a nice guy and clearly very smart, however he is just not very good at teaching. It seems like he does try to teach us, but people are clearly confused by his classes. This is my second semester with him, and I've gotten great grades in his class. Would not take his class if you are not a math person tho.
I took him my whole year freshmen year. the ta was awesome always did review session day before test! You can RETAKE EXAMS! He gives group work and homework ofc, but it helps so much if you do it. Also, it's literally only 10 questions!! Take this class, if you have had some pre calc experience. He is very understanding and make sure he knows you!!
Overall, Math 131 is a difficult class, however, John gives a lot of opportunities for students to attain a passing grade. I took him over the summer, and he was always available even outside of office hours. He is a good math professor for loyola and I recommend him if math is not your strongest subject.
I would 100% take him again. He was an amazing teacher and wanted to make sure everyone understood the material. He allows retakes and corrections. Overall very nice guy.
The class is very straight forward, if you go to the lectures he gives you step by step on how to solve the problems he asks on the test. The study guide is just like the test, he in no way is trying to trick you. Always have struggled with math and honestly he was better than my math teacher who had a 4 rating on here. Great Professor Honestly!!!!
I'll be honest, his math courses are probably not the best ones and his lecture are so dry. I recommend finding a different professor because he does not help at all. I already know all the material he is teaching, but it just isn't a good refresher on any of this. He made it way more confusing than it should be. Overall, find a different professor
He's a really good professor and wants to help in any way that he can. If you miss class you will get confused, it's just better to attend. His study guides are just like the exam. Exams are closed note, but he allows you to retake as many times as you want with the highest being 90%. Sometimes he is a bit confusing, so I would utilize the tutors!
Professor Houlihan explained topics thoroughly and understandably. The worksheets he provides are helpful and relevant to exams and homework. The exams he gives are graded and put into the grade book within 1-2 days of it being assigned. He gives study guides that correlate directly with exams. Exams are short and have simple problems.
10/10 prof, very nice, rants about technology's affect on today's society. very good at explaining math clearly, grade is based on 3 exams, the final, online homework (which can be hard but you don't have to get it all correct) and group work. you get a in-class paper assignment which is easy. overall great class :)
Lots of group work, uses worksheets to teach the class. The homework is incredibly difficult and near impossible with the amount of info he gives us in class. Go to class or else you'll fall behind. Tests are just like the study guide.
Great teacher. Very clear teaching. Willing to help. Offers students many opportunities to up their grades. Fair tests and grading. Nice person.
I really liked Professor Houlihan. He put a math joke on the board every class and asked the class if they understood what we were doing before moving on. I thought the class wasn't challenging, but I did take calculus in high school. He shows how to do the problems we are learning then moves on to printed practice to work in groups with.
Monotone guy but a good teacher. Explains things very well and always helps when you do not understand something. Lots of group work that is fairly easy, study guides that are very similar to exams, and a homework assignment due before each class. You can retake each exam as many times as you'd like and the max grade on a retake is a 90%. Take him.
As long as you show up and ask questions the class is totally manageable. The exams are exactly like the study guides, and we went over them together in class. Professor isn't the most approachable but he is kind and does want everyone to do well.
He speaks in a very monotone voice so class can be boring. Class is mainly a worksheet he hands out and you work on it for class. 3 exams and cumulative final. Can retake tests many times. Weekly Wiley Plus homework.
I would have to agree with the other comments with his monotone voice, he is still attentive to his students. He also checks up on students during class to help. You are able to take any retests as many times. For wiley hw, ur able to turn it in late! Overall if you struggle grasping concepts or math quickly, I recommend taking his class
Normal difficulty math class, but he walks around every class to help every single student, as the SI. Homework not needed for grade, tests not too hard, final was cumulative and terrible though. He's a nice old man. Retests available for every test except final. Would recommend
This professor is not very caring at all. He works at his convivence, you're simply just a number to him...
If you aren't good at math and don't do well on your exams, he does unlimited retests until the final exam. He walks around the class to make sure your on the right bath, very personal help. Lots of groupwork.
His lecture is really boring and easy to lose focus in. He can also come across as condescending. However, he offers unlimited test retakes until you get 90% and is pretty lenient in general. He's a nice person, but his lectures would never seem to end. I also don't always understand his teaching style. It's basically just doing problems over again
Professor Houlihan is a great math teacher. His lectures are clear and he provides helpful study materials. Attendance is mandatory but the class isn't too difficult if you put in the work. I found unstuckstudy useful for extra practice.
Houlian stands so close to the board you cant even see what he writes and he talks very fast but his class isnt that hard. he will help you if u need it and he lets you retake exams as many times as needed. 4 exams and a final and wiley plus homework. class can be confusing because of the way he explains but not terrible
Very easy professor if you have an okay understanding of math. His lectures are very dry, but Wiley Plus was incredibly helpful and I honestly learned everything from the book rather than the professor. His tests match the study guides pretty well, but he does call people up to the board randomly to do problems so beware if u hate that stuff.
Prof. Houlihan was not good, not bad, just mid. Made sure we learned what we needed to but nothing beyond that. Unlimited test retakes which makes it hard to get a bad grade in the class which was nice! Lectures were pretty boring and not very informative, we just went into group work and figured it out lol.
Honestly a good professor. Notes are not posted on Sakai, so you have to come to class for them. He takes attendance everyday. There are no quizzes, just exams and wiley hw u have to pay for. You can retake exams as many times as you want until last day if u have less than 90%. There is group work, and he asks groups to put their work on board.
If you can avoid it, I would not take him. This class is entirely self-taught, with 7 exams and 1 final. He is not good at teaching. Granted, you can retake the tests as many times as you want to get a 90%. His tests are tricky, and not always worded the same as the homework. Get ready to start studying. He also talks about random unrelated things.
If you have not already taken a precalculus class, run far away from this professor!! He does not teach AT ALL. He simply gives you a worksheet and then makes you work in groups. He will walk around and help people, but most of the time he would just give me unsolicited advice on what I was doing "wrong" with the problem. His class was torturous.
The greatest failure of a professor is when they make the subject they teach so dreadful that even students who enjoy the subject begin to hate it. I was about to major in stats until I took his class Lectures like Joe Biden, awful grading criteria, spent three weeks on mean median & mode, puts you on the spot with questions to embarrass you
I really liked him. He allowed retakes on every test no matter how late in the semester and he cared a lot about how you did in his class and if you were learning. I would recommend going to class everyday bc it's hard to catch up on material if you miss a day. He gets through a lot in each class. He's also a pretty silly guy. Do the hw!!
Honestly not sure why his reviews are so low, he allows you to retake all exams at all points throughout the semester and homework is identical to the in class work. He is not lecture heavy and can be pretty funny. I would take again.
This professor doesn't let you use a calculator and takes off points for the smallest things. He reads out of a textbook to teach (if he does), and otherwise hands you a paper before sending you off into groups to figure it out on your own.
He makes people read off a worksheet, barely teaches just reads off what is written and throws you in deep end as if you're supposed to already know the material. There is homework every class, we are in groups on whiteboards and DOES NOT TEACH. Good thing about him tho is he does let you retake your test until end of semester for any test we took.
