He speaks too quickly, never has time to go over something he did not prepare. Overall bad learning experience.

teaches from the book, very clear and easy to understand
Explains the subject in the way that you can understand it. Easy tests and quizes and has a big curve
expects at least 8 hrs study time to get a good grade. expects all HW done too, very hard, intimidating, sounds like he lowers his voice on purpose to be that way. real old school, but if you like that, great for you
Very hard to understand. Doesnt explain subject very well. Poor teaching skills.
Don't take this class!!!!

Only for "SERIOUS STUDENTS" Survival skills:1] Take good notes.2]do your homework regularly.3] keep up with his readings.4]Study with smart other smart students in the class. CLASS IS NOT THAT HARD. You'll learn the most and retain it.
hard class, good teacher
this guy is HORRIBLE, he is old school, I am a depaul alum and nothing was beneficial from his class. While the rest of the world is using excel, he is making you do problems the long way, like it was 1974.
Bad teacher. Discourages questions. He likes to pick on random people in class. His answer to everything is, read the book. Don't take him!
hard teacher..makes you learn allthough..if i did it..anyone can!! will learn and retain info if actually do problems and readings!!
This guy is tough, but you will learn A LOT. Just to warn you, there's alot of studying to be done and he's hard on students who don't have their homework done (you have to read answers out loud).Overall, only for serious students (if ya want to do well).
This prof. is hard like really hard. He should be fired from DePaul...and I think Dean should look at this message more seriously if he is checking this website...and I am sure he does. Don't take him, I have to retake this class fu**ed up gpa/gradution.
study a bit, but hard for the mt and final. Test is 50 % problems and 50% true/false. tudy the h.w and read the book and you will do fine. He has a huge curve. Also do not forget to participate in class this is the key to passing his class.
This teacher is very interesting. I wonder how a teacher could lack so much.
Class is easy if you do the Homework!!! WHy dont people get this. He is an A hole but its good that he is one because he forces you to do the homework and thats what many of us need. I expect to recieve an A in the class.
Worst teacher at DePaul. Boring lectures, tough grader; midterm, final, and 2 quizes. Cant reach him after class, no email, no #, nothing. Made stupid comments if you asked a qustion; thinks he is all that, but really not.
He's the best teacher. Just do the work, participate in class, and the quizzes and midterms will be very understandable. Yes, it's hard work, but the grade on the end is worth all the work.
great teacher. His exams are exactly the same as homework. if you do all the work, you'll get an A
Evil. And what's with the 8 minutes Breaks? Is that how long it takes him to file his horns? I suffered through FIN 310 and had to drop him for 311. Run from him...run for your lives! (And GPA)

great teacher
out of all finance classes taken here this guy made the most sense, its not easy but you will learn the most
HE IS THE WORST TEACHER I'VE HAD IN COLLEGE. 10 MIN FOR QUIZZES, 8 MIN BREAKS..HE'S HORRIBLE. STAY AWAY FROM HIM!! IT SEEMS LIKE HE WANTS YOU TO FAIL!
very difficult. he is all business and dosen't seem to be very approachable. nice guy, i think, but too serious about the work
Please avoid Huston, i just dropped his class he's the hardest teacher i ever took at DePaul, explains too fast, and he's very strict when it comes to exams.
Bottom line - If you really want to learn, go through hell, but be happy that you did learn something, TAKE HOUSTON. Yes, he expects you to be spending atleast 9 hrs a week on a class, but if you spend close to 5, you should be fine. FAST teacher, take him if you are ready for real learning!!

Heavy workload. Dry humor makes for a great time (particularly when he chews-out the jackasses in class). Very clear and thorough, you the student very much determines your grade. He lays everything out for you and it's your perogative to complete the 9hours a week of work. An acquired taste.
The workload is quite intense. He expects his students to participate in every class. His tests are tough. He's somewhat intimidating....WOW DePaul students, it looks like we actually have a REAL 4-year school university professor. A wonderful asset to DePaul Univ.
Houston is not as bad as everyone says. He is a great teacher and I learned a lot! Wacth out asking questions is class b/c he will embarrass you if you did not do your "self review". If you just read the book, which everyone is too lazy to do, you will be fine.
You can't avoid Houston! You will actually learn from his class, its been weeks and finance is still fresh! On the other hand, he puts people down, intimidates you, hard tests, and LOTS of homework. He's not that bad though. Take him just work hard and you will be fine!
JOHNNY HOUSTON is the man. He doesnt mess around. If you think you can pass or do well without doing the work, think again. Better show up, take good notes, and read the chapters. In the end you will have actually learned something at DePaul. All students should be forced to take Houston.
I found this class to be very hard, i you have a the energy to spend close too ten hours on the class go for it and you'll be fine. Make sure you redue the homeworks many times because his midtem and final a based only on the homework problems. GOOD LUCK!
hard teacher, but you WILL learn something. ALl students should take him, especially finance majors. He talks really fast so he can get as much info in as possible. Just stay awake, be alert, take good notes. He wont answer your questions in class, but hes VERY helpful OUTSIDE of class.
Take Klindenhagen instead of Houston. He's horrible, he will ridicule you if you don't know an answer. He's very hard, he's evil. Houston, if you're reading this, I want to ask you a question? What is the PV or your future life? = 0

I had to drop this class after the midterm. This class is not difficult if you stay on top of your work. I think he is a great professor but I did not put in as much time as I should have. I plan on taking him again when I have more time to study for his class. He's a little intimidating but wor
So many people have bad mouthed Houston for being an ass, or being a really hard teacher. The class isn't that bad actually. You just have to stay on top of your game. I was terrified going into the class, he's a good teacher and knows his stuff. I would still take him if given the chance again.
One of the best teachers i have ever had. As long as you do the 9 hours of homework per week you should do well. There are no curve balls and and he is very clear. He breaks each problem down into its raw components so that even the slowest students understand. Great teacher, KEY IS DO THE HOMEWORK!
Homework takes a long time, but it's not too bad. Just do your homework and know what you're doing for each problem. If you can do this and read the chapters, it is possible to get an A in the class.
Houston is a good teacher, infact really great. He explains the stuff real good and u will learn alot. DO the HW and u will easily get an B or better. I was scared taking his class, but I ended up with a B+, and learned teh most than ne other FIN class. U dont need to put the 9hours that he says.
Didn't do the homework or read ahead 70% of the time, but took solid, solid notes. Understood concepts in class, and then read at home to reinforce. Houston's words are gold and if you pay attention you will understand the whys AND hows Understand concepts for problems, not just how to do them Got A
Great Prof. but he is tough, you MUST do homework or he will call you out in front of the class.Stick with it and you will be fine, plus he is willing to help if you need it.You can also go to the finance office for help,I like him and would take him again, and you should 2!!Just do the work
Great teacher, I learned more in that class then I have in any other because he challenges you and doesnt allow you to give excuses. If you want to take a step ahead of other students for the rest of your college career, take him!
I hate him and his limp, i hope you never teach again u ****...He writes in little letters and looks unhappy
Great professor! The best one I ever had. He actually teaches you something which makes it easier in other classes. I would take him for all my courses if I could. It's ipossible to get an A, but everything you learn is wothwhile the GPA sacrifice.
Worst teacher at DePaul University. Goes very fast when explaining the material and writes very small so you can't even see it on the board. Does not help you with any questions about how to use the fin. calculator.Do not take this teacher
The best professor I have ever had. The class is not easy, but with all these other idiots teaching here it's nice that there's someone who knows what he's doing. He's not easy, but DO SOME WORK. The only reason people don't like this guy is you have to do work to do well. What a concept. Great professor.
This man knows his stuff, but he goes really fast and writes really small on the board so its hard to read. However he is a fair grader. Tests are hard and the class requires a lot of time. But I think I actually learned something in this class. I would take him if you have the time to put into the class.
I took Houston for FIN 311 last year and received an A. Here is my candid assessment: you will certainly learn a lot from Houston, though he does have a tendency to be condescending toward his students (at least in my experience). Just be aware of this love/hate relationship. However, I would not willingly take a course with him again.
You'll learn alot, challenging class! Buttom line though it's not what you learn it's just who you know in the world of finance... So take an easy professor who'll just give you a good grade. Never heard anyone get an A.
this guys class is hard as hell, but if you want your money worth take it! his teaching style forces you to learn and remember the info. the hardest and best finance course at depaul!!
basiclly the biggest **** at DePaul. the most unapproachable person, cocky. if you dont understand, he makes you feel stupid. writes small, i think my eyesite got worse after 10 weeks with him. do not take unless you plan on being in finance. study hard, do your hw and MAYBE just MAYBE you'll pass.
Let's see, the only reason to take 311 is if you're a finance MAJOR. So you better want to learn at least something. This guy is awesome. Very hardcore teacher, but what a concept. Heaven forbid you have to at least work a little for a good grade. Great professor.
i don't know what the hell the last person before me is talking about cause houston sucks!!! stay the hell away, I cry myself to sleep everynight b/c of his class. please for me stay away or become a statistic.
You have to do the HW, you have to show up for class. Don't ask questions b/c he will make you look stupid. Exams are 50% problems which are just like the HW & 50% T/F or MC. He curves big. He is definitly a bitter man. He teaches his way and that is it. I got an A, but wouldn't take any of his courses again.
Tough guy, the class requires a lot of work, do the problems! He is big on attendance, and he calls on you to answer the problems and you need to explain how you got the answer. The exams are 50% problems, so defiantly learn them inside-out and should pass the class w/out a doubt. It's tough to get an A, the curve fluctuates-depends on exam grades
Evil.
Okay, I worked hard in the class and got a B despite of how much of an **** he is. He is very unhelpful, I went to office hours and he basically refuse to help me so I did it on my own. Those who say "well you'll learn something taking him" are wrong because all you do is teach yourself the material avoid him take Goel. I heard great things
I agree with the last person. I don't like the teacher b/c he is not helpful AT ALL. I studied as well and did all the HW, got B. Would get an A if I would memorize the chapters. Do not take him if you can't study from the book, need assistance or any kind of explanation.
rough course. but if you put in the time and do the homework problems, you will at least get a B. I never once did the reading.
Tough professor. Expect to do a lot of work. Need to really understand all the readings for the multiple choice (50% of final and midterm). Make sure you go to class to understand the problems, he does them differently than done in the book. I missed most classes and it was hard as hell to catch up. Got an A, but definately worked hard for it.
This teacher is super organized. Most of the class is based on problems and calculations. He tries to scare you away with this 9 hours of work per week junk, but I doubt if I put in more than 15 hours all semester. Definitly do the problems and pay attention in class. I got an A and never read the chapters, just skimmed them. Strict but fair.
Its teachers like this that make a Finance degree worth something. Put the time in and you should do fine. I wish they would make a sound board on ebaums world with his voice and phrases, he's really funny. I especially enjoyed when he called on kids who didn't know stuff and tried to ****...like this dumb blonde I sat next too named trish.
Not gonna lie, it's a tough class. I did the homework, but never read the book. He says you need to put in 9 hours a week, but I only put about one a week to do the homework and got an A in the class. I would have to say Houston is the best Fin professor I've had so far. Take this guy if you want to actually learn something.
Finally a brilliant professor around here. Learned so much from him, if you care about understanding material...take him! :)
Tough class. Houston does not play. He's a great professor but not too friendly. He is not a people person. Do the homework and you should pass. Wouldn't take him ever again. He makes the class harder than it what it should be.
LOTS of work, many people ended up doing bad, many dropped, not recommended.
Houston is evil. A mean wicked ****, and he prides himself in it. He likes being known as the b* buster. I know someone who took the class 3 times b4 she graduated! He's nicer to morning students and plain mean at night. If you are not an A finance student/ or work 20 + hrs DO NOT take it at night, you will not get a good grade.
Stop complaining and pretend like you are in college. Houston is a great teacher and expects students to do what they are supposed to do... study. Study, go to class and you will learn a lot from him
Do not take this class!!! he scared the sh*t out of me, i cried in the library before his midterm and final, he is an evil man.... if you want to fail take him.... his exams are "everything is a fair game" and that means memorize the book. if this is the only class you are taking, you can get through it because you need to study EVERY DAY good luck
Houston is one of those "teach by imtimiation" types. Works for some students but pisses most off. To top it all off, he moves about 100mph through the chapters and expects you to master it by teaching yourself through "self review". About half the class drops after the midterm. Want some advice? Look elsewhere.
I felt like i was back in the marines again, treats his students like children, serioulsy assigned seating? who still does that. Stay away!
plain and simple, avoid at all costs
Great teacher, I don't know what some of these people are talking about but yes at first he tries to intimidate you with telling you how much you have to study or you will fail, but I had the class on thursday nights, studied a little on wed., got an A on the midterm, A on the final and an A in the class. Take him if you want to learn finance.
This guy is an ass, he treats everyone like an idiot. First class comes off as a hardass but his class is not as bad as everyone makes it out. I am no finance genius and I got a B in the class without working my but off. He is very smart and explains things well. Just do the homework and know the format of the problems, they are the same on the tes

Tough, but worthwhile. You learn a lot from his class although the way he talks makes you think you're in the 1950's. I enjoyed the class. Attendance is mandatory and you'll get a deduction no matter what though. I was sick and I got an A- instead of an A because of it. If u ditch class you won't like him.
Let me tell you a story about John. After the midterm, he writes everyone's scores on the board and whoever failed has to leave the room and drop the class. One time, we had the first ten minutes of class to take a quiz and a guy was 9 minutes late. Houston told him he had 60 seconds left for the quiz and the guy didn't even have time to walk to h
Listen this guy was the best proffesor i had at DePaul. He is by no means an easy A. In fact i barely got a B+ in his class. But if you want an easy A don't take him. If you want to learn a great deal of useful information and don't mind studying a lot well then he's for you. He demands a lot, and has been known to point out stupidity.
Plain and simple: This is probably the worst professor for Finance. I would take Lim anyday over him. He is not helpful. Midterm, final, and two quizzes. Homework everyday... notes are your bible. Dont take him if you're expecting anything above a B.
Okay... I know there is a lot of mixed comments posted about Houston and I will clear them all up. FIN 311 is a tough class... he says you need 9 hours/week, but I got by with 30-35 hours in the quarter. YOU MUST SHOW UP TO CLASS, HW IS MANDATORY. The guy isn't a dumbass, he knows what he is talking about. My biggest challange @ DePaul so far...
If you're reading this, you are probably a Finance Major. With that being said, Houston may be challenging but the grade you get at the end is one you work hard for. You will have learnt a thing or two when you leave his class. Not a waste of money like 90% of depaul's teachers.
You need to work VERY hard in this class. You can't miss one class or you will probably fail. There's alot of homework that you HAVE to do cause he calls on everyone. I must admit that if I didn't have a friend who helped me alot, i don't know what i would have done. But overall he's a realy nice man. Take Tons of notes! and prepare to work hard

Cocky jerk! Starts class off by predicting the ways that you will fail. Treats studentsllower than subordinates. The only students that like him are the ones who are just as cocky...till they recieve their grade. Intimidates students to lose their confidence. Even disrespecful to older students. A real jerk!
He can be rough on students, but he expects u 2 work hard for ur grade (we r paying lots of $$). If ur serious bout a career in FIN,u should appreciate it.those who don't like him, wait til u get n the real world, no one will hold ur hand.U have to devote alot of time and he makes that very clear
The BEST professor at DePaul. If you take him and take him seriously, you will do well. I do feel he is a little uptight, but rather funny at times. It's really funny when he picks on students who show up late or don't know their material.
If you want to really understand the material he's the best, but if you want to just get a decent easy grade, look elsewhere. He does his share of weeding out fin majors who should not be better off with some other major. I got asked some of the stuff he talks about on the interviews. Know all the problems he assigns,go to class and READ the book.
is the BEST prof for finance. He is NOT mean, he is nice.. he comes off rough but he truly cares about the students because he wants us to learn. If u go to class, understand the homework. u should easily get a B. Midterm and Final r exactly like hmwrk prblms. skim chapters for multiple choice. after this class i can take on any interview.
This is a definate weed out class. Yes he is hard, but I agree with everyone, it's cause he cares. I barely could read his writing on the board, so SIT up close, read the book, and DO the homework problem... and that should get you a B in the class and landing a job!
Professor Houston is one of the greats at DePaul. You will work very hard in this class, but it will pay off in the long run. I learned so much that will help me eventually land a job. Houston is clear and precise with his requirements for the course and you must adhere to them. I would definitely recommend this to anyone interested in corp finance
DISCLAIMER- Like he says dont take him if you cant dedicate time to do the homework. HOWEVER, can learn same stuff with any other 311 PR and will be way EASIER. I withdrew and am taking another Pr and have learned a lot more because he takes the time to simplify the concepts. Houston uses intimidation to teach- and picks on you for the right answer
Weed out class! If you don't have a solid 310 foundation, you might find yourself confused. You have to read the assigned chapter carefully before coming to the lecture, otherwise your notes are useless. I have learned a lot from him, and he does have a wicked sense of humor, but you'll get it only if you're not Houston-hater
NOOOOO NOOOOO DO YOUR SELF A FAVORITE AND DON'T TAKE HIM... HE'S THE WROST PROF AT DEAPUL, HE NEEDS TO LEAVE DEPAUL, I HATE HIM SO MUCH.
He is a great prof. He is a good one for hardworking students who want to learn fin things.
Houston is an overall good professor. You will learn a lot in his class. Yes it is hard but isn't that what college is about; challenges. It will only help you in the future. He best prepares you for your subsequent college courses, better than anyone else.
He is great. If you are not up for hard work, you shouln't be in college.
Houston is the wrost professor ever. If you have a choice, do not take him. His hand writing is awful, he writes all over the board and you dont even know where to start with his lectures. He is really really confusing
He's NOT the most knowledgeable finance prof, treats students like they're in the military...rude, makes you sit in a seating chart, wants students to kiss up for participation points by HW prob's. Other than that, just midterm, final, 2 quizzes. Do HW prob's & read the chapt's to do well on exams...not unlike other classes.
Participation is mandatory. He encourages you to participate so you'll actually understand the material. He'll come off as a jerk at first, but he really wants you to learn. Do not take this prof unless you actually dedicate hours per week in homework and studying. Attendance is mandatory.
Horrible professor. Makes lawrence gluck seem incredibly great at teaching. Participation grade is poorly determined. Only counts participation for right answers and deducts for wrong answers. Who ever gave this guy his degree must have been smoking crack. Thank you DePaul University for providing great professors!!!
Horrible professor. Makes lawrence gluck seem incredibly great at teaching. Participation grade is poorly determined. Only counts participation for right answers and deducts for wrong answers. Who ever gave this guy his degree must have been legally insane. Thank you DePaul University for providing great professors!!!
Although Professor Huston is rigid and tough you will learn a lot from his class. All the problems on his tests are taken from the homework. If you are lazy you will fail and it will be your fault. DePaul would be a much better place if more Professors were like Huston instead of power point reading drones.
If you are seriously trying to learn concepts in Finance either for your career or for post-grad work then take him. If you are only looking to get a passing grade, find someone easier. He will hold you accountable with participation, homework and tests but I guarantee you'll learn the concepts by heart.
Stay FAR FAR Away. Professor never used book, just these 1920s handouts. He writes so light and small on the board, make sure you sit right up front. Never explained things, expected you to know things. I am repeating the class over. STAY AWAY!
The class is difficult and the teacher is hard to understand, however it is NOT impossible! Very often you will be teaching yourself, it is true that he has the worst handwriting in the world, sit in front and pay close attention.Don?t give up, otherwise you will fail. Tests are straight forward from the HW. 2 tests, 2 QZ's and HW. Participate!
This guy is among the WORST professors at DePaul. Have fun trying to teach yourself, since he does not know how to teach. He should just retire, since he is too old to be learning how to teach.
This guy is horrible. He doesn't explain anything, but expects you to know everything. I passed the class with a B only because I studied my a$$ off. You'd better understand your FIN 310 very well, if you want to take his class.
I normally don't leave comments. But this professor is tough. Writes smalls, very disorganized. 2 quiz, 1 midterm and final. I cannot learn from this class, but good luck to the rest of you.
He is a very good but an extremely tough professor and demands that you put lots of work in the class. If you are a finance major and you are serious about learning, take him, but expect to be challenged. He says he expects 9 hours a week, I put in maybe 2 and received an A.
Houston is a very good professor. However, you must be willing to do the work and be prepared for his class. You do work hard but will remember the material. His final is exactly like the homework. Not bad at all.
If you want to learn a lot about corporate finance and did well in FIN 310, take Dr. Houston. I thought he was an excellent professor and as long as you are willing to do the weekly homework, you will learn more than most other finance courses and also do well in the 2 exams. One of my favorite DePaul professors!
The professor did not teach the material very well. He will call you out in class and if you are lost or confused it is your fault. This professor's teaching style did not help me learn the material. He was not very accommodating. I would recommend taking another professor. His class is too stressful. Most students dropped.
Dr. Houston's writing is impossible to deceipher as well as his teaching style. He enjoys singling out students and does not let up, even if you tell him you don't have the right answer. 1st half class is reviewing the homework problems, 2nd half is new material and assignement of homework. Most people dropped. Too stressful of a class to prepare 4
Bad professor. Rude to students. Disrespectful. Many students had to drop out. Professor did not care about you, just wanted to teach and get out. Try another.
Ugh a student's nightmare. Not helpful, not inspiring, not a good teacher. Distills fear in his students so they don't bother him. Teaches and leaves, office hours are not there for you, directs you straight to the tutors. No EC, no curve. Don't do it...
I graduated from DePaul long time back. I work for a bank - under Global Structred Finance Grp. From my experience - use him. He is tough, very very tough but what you will learn out of his class will be with you forever! Trust me - its been 6 years and I can still calculate CF/IRR/MIRR using nothing but pen and a paper
