Very boring and goes off on tangents about other Science issues.
This prof puts a lot of effort into making sure his students understand the information, including arranging study sessions which he attends. He also explains things throughly. If you get a bad grade, it's your fault, not his :)
This is not an easy A. Take class if would like to work work work.
Fair teacher but very boring, mono-tone and says "um-k" way too often!
wouldnt suggest him
Dr. Hranitz is a very organized and helpful teacher. However, he sometimes adds too much background information. His tests are hard, be prepared!!!
not approachable, super hard for a 100 level course, unwilling to help, i attended every class and still was lost
Dr.Hranitz has such a monotone voice, it will put you to sleep!! He adds WAY too much unnecessary detailed info, that you dont realize til exam time. Purposely makes exams harder.Doesnt seem to know what is going on.
You need to put a little effort into this class, but he will go above and beyond to help you...study sessions, review sheets, extra credit...just DON'T wait until the night before to start studying! You won't make it then...
He is horrible at what he gets paid way too much to do. Not approachable at all and extremely boring. He sometimes gives false information in class and can't grade things right the first time. Would definitely try to avoid if possible!
Not an easy class. He teached this gen. ed. as if everyone is a science major. Not fun at all!
I had him his 1st semester teaching this class. He used Hill's notes, but was unorganized and didn't seem like he read them ahead of time. Gave alot of unusful information pertaining to speech path. Very rude to most people in class. Degrades people to their face in his office. Could have better!!!!
He should have to learn how the information relates to our major before he gets paid money to teach us about it. He makes you feel incapable just because you dont understand his teaching style. I ended up with a C in the class just because I worked my ass off on my own to try and teach myself. AVOID
Uses others profs info b/c he is too lazy to do the work himself...then doesn't understand the other profs info and confuses himself. Tests are tricky and 2094850984 hours of studying does not help. Avoid if possible, take surmaz. He's a ****.
DONT TAKE! I generally have A's in every single other class I have ever taken except anatomy 1 and 2 with Hranitz. I struggled to get a C. He made the material more difficult than it should have been. His notes were confusing and gave to much useless information. I retaught everything to myself.
Study very hard and frequently.
I think that Dr.Hranitz is as sweet as a button!! He is so kind when you go to his office, maybe he gets mad because some people do not pay attention. I love the interaction in the class. Only complaint is the mistakes in grading he makes. Overall, I think he's great.
very hard to follow. tests are extremely hard. my advice read to book and teach yourself you would do better than he does
Hranitz...get ready to print a whole bunch of stuff out at the Union...study hard and try to ignore the multitude of Star Trek references. Live long and prosper, John.
He is the worst teacher ever.
Move our test!!! I can not learn the muscles on my own. It is ridiculous that because he does not get to everything in class, we have to pay for it by having a test we are not ready for.....just move the test!!
On his tests he tries to my you second guess your answer and makes many mistaks on the tests.
PAIN IN THE BUTT... he goes over and over and over the information. He spends so much lab time going over the information that you don't have enough time to do the experiments, and then he keeps you late. Not just five minutes late, but like a half-hour late! He is booooring and a pain.
wow. where do i even begin. this guys tests are the worst you'll ever take, his lectures put you to sleep, and lab never ends when it is supposed to. the class is very very time consuming.
Nice guy, nerdy but funny. I think he really cared about us doing well. He seemed to recognize if something was unfair and tried to accommodate to make it easier for us. He wanted to know what we thought was fair. Material can be hard, and a lot at times, but if you study it's not impossible.
I think that he personally does not like me. Oh well. He is an ok prof, but he is extremely error prone, and not well organized. He is kinda cranky sometimes, as well, and snaps at you.
I think this man set a record for the slowest scantron grading ever. Currently at 8 days and 11 hours. If he says Friday he really means the following Thursday.
Wow!! I never knew that it took 2 whole weeks to walk over to the scantron machine and put our tests in it....and how are we gonna have a test next week on 10 pages of lecture notes. I pray he does not try to make us learn it on our own.
very unorganized, lazy(took 2 weeks to grade tests), makes a lot of mistakes, doesnt keep his word, some test questions didnt even have an otion of picking the right answer, you had to hope you picked the wrong one that he thought was right, TRY TO AVOID happy that his class averages a C
That one quiz counting as 6 quizzes is insane. That actually hurt my grade, because I made a dumb mistake, and now it counts against me 6 times. I actually am going to cry.
I could have taught the lab better than him, he wasted more time talking about stupid**** and then we had to kill ourselves to get the work done on time. Dont Take HIM!
He is really rude. Just straight out rude. Ugh. And, he is utterly unorganized. I feel like he needs to get his act together soon or he is going to fall apart. He is also condescending when you go to his office to inquire about something.
Unorganized, lazy when it comes to grading, tests are filled with ridiculous mistakes that takes him even longer to find the right answers for, nothing's returned on time. As I was once a TA for another dept, I know for a fact how long it takes to grade scantrons: 10 min if you write the exams correctly. Complete idiot! Avoid like the plague!!!!!
This guy had the nerve to send me away twice during his office hours because he was "doing something important"! I learned mort in high school bio than he knows. I never got papers back until they were meaningless and they were scantrons. how bad is that! he's just plain a nasty person.
he's not ionterested in teaching. he thinks he's some great thinker or researcher. and don't expect to get your tests back. they magically fall into a dark hole.
He makes it clear that he doesn't want to teach. he wants to be somewhere else and students are the last thing on his mind. he reads from his notes all class.
nice guy. take him if you want a good gradein a class. But dont think he is going to teach you the material well, thats pretty much up to you. if you study what he writes on the board, you will do fine.
he is an awesome prof. and i must say that i want to be like him when i grow up! thanks dude
boring! reads from his notes and expects you to spit it back.
Unorganized, unprepared, and very vague in his lectures. More concerned with his research and his social status with the students than he is with the students success.
If you like having no clue in class or on tests, than this is the teacher for you. I got a C in the class by the skin of my teeth, but take another teacher instead because you won't learn one thing in this class.
he is a very nice man, but he is not a good prof.. he says that he will have tests graded by a certain date but .. yea.. that never happens.. he doesn't keep his promases.. he is boring... but really, he is a nice man, he just can't teach, also study hard for his tests... the first one is the hardest, so don't freak out
Hranitz isn't really a bad guy, it's really the class in general that was horrible. The notes don't stick the most important detail, they go into stupid information that you will never remember. He then tries to quiz you on that stuff rather than the important basics that we need. I was unimpressed w/lab also.
I don't understand why he doesn't have great ratings. I think he is such a nice person and lab was always enjoyable. Lab Exams were not terribly hard as long as you study. Sometimes the class was confusing, but not b/c of the prof... because of the info. Not a bad prof. to take.
Hated this class and this professor. He was no help and did everything possible to try to make the class harder than it already was. I would never want to be in his class ever again.
Covers entirely too much info in a short time. Exams were difficult, but manageable IF you studied. I started studying a week before for 3-4 hours a day and managed a B+. He's semi helpful if you go to his office, IF you can find him. Never has tests graded/posted when he says he will. Overall, pretty awful class, but not impossible.
Good guy, tempermental at times. Grading procedures way off base. Get mid 90's and still get B's
He is a very nice guy, but he is the most unorganized man I have every seen in my life. I think he is too busy running around doing other things, instead of knowing what the hell is going on in his classes. His tests were messed up twice in class, and all he said was oops haha sorry. Sorry my a** you werent the one studing for 2 weeks straight.
Dr. Hranitz is a great prof! Lecture goes by quickly & he explains things thoroughly. Yeah, there's a lot of material... but hello, we are in college now! If you study from the lecture guide... you'll do great on the tests. Nice person & easily approachable!! TAKE HIM!!
He's such a nice man, but sooo bleeeeding boring. I don't know if it's just the class in general or him, but you fall asleep.
Well overall the class isnt that bad there is just way to much information covered. He is not a bad guy he is just unorganized. I think he needs to stop paying so much attention to his research and start focusing on his students in the class that want to do good and pass the class. First test is the hardest so dont freak out.It Gets better Promise
I thought overall he was a good prof. He tended to mess up one question per test, which worked out okay for us since he just gave us the points for them. He was very helpful and willing to answer questons, he is just verrry busy with his other work. His tests are tough but they come from the lecture notes, i didnt even open the book and did fine.
Dr. Hranitz was awesome! He's very helpful when you need it and he's funny. All his assignments are graded easily and the midterm/final was cake. Definatly take him if you can!
He is a great teacher with a great personalitly! you do have to read the book to study but he gives you reading assignments so you know what to read! i got an A in A&P 1 and 2 thanks to the book, his notes are a little scattered but over all great guy
He sucks!
Mean person. He usually screws ppl. doesn't know how to teach, but expects from you a lot. very short-tempered. Be careful with him.
Very nice guy and helpful during office hours, but exams are very difficult. Between this and lab this class needs to be your life. If you put the effort you will be ok, but definitely not an easy A course for most students. Don't count on seeing your exam scores until a week later which is very frustrating
He is a hypocrite! He expects you to be able to spell every word correctly on your lab exams, yet doesn't spell the words correctly in your lecture note book. Sometimes he was nice, but other times he would be very moody. He is very unorganized and it shows when taking the exams. I am glad that I never have to take another class with him again!
I had Surmacz for A&P I and got an A. For A&P II I ended up with a C. I really thought his notes were completely scattered and he wasn't a very good teacher. If you can take it with someone else, do. If not, learn to study every detail, because it will be on the test.
He was very nice, especially if you went for help. His lectures were a bit overwhelming. There is a lot to learn in just one semester. His lab tests were harder than his lectures. Make sure you study your lab book front to back; you need to know the every tiny detail. Make sure you spell everything correctly. Overall, very hard course.
Avoid Hranitz at all costs, utterly useless as a professor. He does not give a**** about his students, all he cares about is his research on bees. He doesnt make his own powerpoints, homework or tests. On several occasions i emailed him about homework, most of the time he wouldnt even respond back and the one time he did it was blank email.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had. If you ever have to take Human Biology never take it with him!!
Worst prof. ever, never take him
Professor Hranitz is a sucktastic professor. He says an overwhelming amount of things in lecture and his exams half the time are random questions. You'll need to read the book and then reread the chapters for the exam. He reads straight off the powerpoints that aren't even his and he has to frequently correct himself. If you have to, avoid him.
He means well but is utterly hopeless, take 2 weeks to give back tests, on a scantron i might add. Make sure you know every detail cause it will be on the test. Just avoid him and save yourself the stress!
OMG where to even begin! He is the worst teach I have ever taken throughout my 3 years of college. This is a 100 level course and he is used to taking 300/400 levels so he is teaching that way. It takes him forever just to grade a scantron and post grades. He is beyond useless and not helpful what so ever. AVOID HIM AT ALL COST!!!! No joke!!
ALL of these posts are correct, he is unorganized, not helpful, lazy and all around a horrible prof. makes the class harder than it should be, just AVOID him!
thank you john hranitz for the worst class of my life.
This class was so hard..only took it because I had to. His tests are awful and his lectures are very boring. However, he gives you an extra credit project towards the end of the semester that really helped my average.
He was definitley a nice guy and willing to help. However..he made this class so much harder than it should have been. Its soooo difficult and it takes up all of your time. I had to drop other classes just to keep up with the work and studying. But if you do all the work and make this class your life..you'll be okay.
Such a hard class..lab exams are too hard and he doesn't teach for you to understand it he just goes through slides..worst class ever
This class was so hard..words can't even explain. He goes through material way too quickly and expects you to know the smallest details. I've never studied for a class so hard in my life and done so poorly. You won't have a life when you're taking his class.
Terrible professor, Nice guy..Goes way to fast through material and makes it not understandable. Gives you study guides for exams and doesn't put any of the information on the exam. Turns a level 100 class into a 300level class. Luckily he curves or I never would pass
This teacher is an okay man but the class is not the easiest. He is a funny man but he was not on his A game... He would say something would be posted before the weekend and you would wait two days after the weekend to see it. Like I said it was an okay class but be prepared to use the book because things he asks on a test are not taught
Dr H is a really nice guy. Yes his class is very difficult and requires a lot of time studying, but he is very helpful! He conducts online chat sessions the night prior to tests and answers questions. Questions on his exams are straightforward, and all answers can be found in lab and lecture guides. He explains things very clearly. GREAT professor!
This class was very hard but not impossible. I started studying for each exam at least 1 week ahead of time and for lab, printed out pictures of everything and labeled them. If you work hard and understand the material you will do well. It takes him forever to post grades though.
Great guy. He was always willing to help, cracks corny jokes, and is always nice. Yes, the class requires quite a bit of work, but if you work hard enough you will be fine. For the lab exams, I would suggest to start studying about a week before in the lab.
I don't think he knows what's going on. He'll spell things wrong on the powerpoint but then tell you that spelling counts on your exams. Sometimes he puts lectures online, sometimes not. Either way he mumbles so bad I can hardly understand him. Not to mention the baby crying in the backgound on the online lectures. Unprofessional and disorganized.
Definitely a smart guy but has just about zero people skills. Brought his baby to office hours or didn't show up at all. This class is supposed to be hard and I get that, he just made it way harder than it needed to be.
Dr. H was more interested in his research than showing up for class on time, being at his scheduled office hours and even showing up on test days. Irrelevant information: he taught more of his interests than what should have been taught. Expected students to spend multiple hours every day studying for this class or he would "see you next spring."
Just super frustrating. Dr. Hranitz speaks as though you are grad students with his terminology. He expects you to have a decent amount of A&P, chemistry, and general bio before taking the course. His tests are difficult to study for because usually all the information is tested. His explanations are complex and misleading. No book, uses articles..
Unorganized, unclear, and speaks in higher level science terminology so expect to google everything. I study all the time, take notes, re-listen to lectures, ask questions, go to office hours and get a B- Prepare to work hard for little return. I wouldn't take this class again if given the chance. Nice guy, terrible professor.
Terrible. Very unorganized and lazy. Test material does not match the study guides he provides. Also does not like to explain things , just throws notes at you and terminology.
Dr. Hranitz is a good guy outside of class. During class he is terrible, his office is very disorganized. He hasn't cancelled call yet so far, but he is late almost everyday. His study guides have typos, and the practice exams don't match the test at all.
Dr. Hranitz is a good guy who has his mind on a lot of things at once. During lectures, he will go off on tangents for 10 minutes, which can put you to sleep, but they have helped me on some exams. The thing that would annoy me is that I would study his study guides religiously, and the material on the study guide would hardly ever be on the exams.
Dr. Hranitz is the worst teach I've had in my ENTIRE life. He's so unorganized, he uses terms that as I freshman, I don't understand, and he doesn't explain it either. He cancels office hours more times than he's in there, and he doesn't offer much help before tests. I'd suggest you DO NOT take him.
At this moment, I'm studying for his final.. He gave me my review for the final that 4 a.m. and the final is in 24 hours... He waits until the last minute for EVERYTHING. He's an awful teacher, never in office hours, talks to you like you're a grad student, and teaches things that aren't even Bio.. worse course and teacher ever.
SO DISORGANIZED!!! You need to remind him to do everything. Do not count on getting your grades for at least a week after you take a test. He is often confused on his tests, so check his grading to make sure it is correct. Take every quiz because the homework quiz's often have test answers.
Okay professor. Tests are often on things you may have never even seen before. Paid a total of $200 for all of the class materials that he says you need. You do not need the book. I started to study a week and half before the exam and I still only received a high C. I fully understood the material in the lecture guide and still did not do too well.
Hranitz was great. He was definitely not easy but would explain anything you needed help on. Very corny, he gives you notes for lecture but you DO need the lab book. You need to study at least a week in advance for his exams.
Did not show up to class on time and often brought his daughter to. Would leave during the middle of class for "potty breaks" for his 3 year old daughter. Did not understand why we, as SLP and Audio majors, needed to know the information. Made us study a LOT of information and put barely any on tests, along with information we didn't even go over.
Dr. H is a great person but a terrible professor. He consistently shows up 10-20 min late for 8AM lecture and brings his 2-yo to class regularly. He takes several weeks to grade exams (even scantrons), and he tests on material barely covered in class and/or on the study guide (HOWEVER he does host online chats before exams for questions).
Dr. H is a super nice and caring professor! Super smart and you can tell he's very passionate, he is a great professor. However, things aren't posted when they said they would be and takes forever to grade, he's a bit unorganized. The tests were pretty fair though, I just showed up to class, read the lectures and did great.
Not meant to be a teacher, so unorganized in his speech and teaching style.
Dr. Hranitz is a really nice guy but NOT a good professor. He takes 15+ minutes to start class most days and his lectures are basically just poorly put together slides. He's a ridiculously slow grader and has yet to grade submitted homework assignments due over two months ago. Would not recommend unless you absolutely have to take his class.
Terrible teaching style, little resources to help outside of class
I'm not gonna lie, I took this class because I had to for a general education class. You can tell he is passionate about what he is teaching. Very unorganized. I went to class but didn't pay attention, if you do the quizzes and study guides you'll be fine. He does crack a few good jokes every once in a while.
Dr. Hranitz is a very nice guy and he is funny during his lectures, but its so boring. He just rants about biology and doesnt really tech it. When it comes to exam time no one know the content. If you do the assignments and do okay on the exams you will pass.
He is a very kind man and you can tell he loves what he does but he doesn't give good feedback, goes off in tangents, and is a very confusing person to get into touch with. I will say the only reason I got such a good grade was from the textbook reading questions that I could easily look up.
Very boring. Exams are on paper. Too stressful.
Dr. Hranitz nice, but somehow makes lab boring. Concepts bio lab was so fun I never expected to be bored on a "hands on" class. This is because instead of doing activities he lectures for 2.5 hours and tries to cram all of the activities in 20 minutes, which we don't finish. I simultaneously did nothing for 3 hours but also didn't finish the lab.
Bad at time management. He also literally never grades things. However he listens and if you want a test pushed back, he will push it back no problem. He also scrapped an entire test for us becauase we didnt want to take it. If you can handle the anxiety of not knowing your grade take him ive actually never heard of someone failing his classes.
Honestly, Dr. Hranitz wasn't bad, he's a little naive and would extend assignments for students who were obviously lying about their reasons for being late, but that was more laughable than anything. It was an odd flipped lecture which started to feel like a waste of time. Attendance was mandatory but class sessions were only review material.
Not tech savvy or organized at all. Lectures are boring and he talks the entire time. He teaches by unit and for some reason we are given more time to complete the unit quizzes, homework, homework quiz, and textbook questions that contain more content than the units with less content. Nice guy, but not the best professor.
He is a really nice guy and not a bad professor at all. Class is mandatory but it is through an app called top hat and you get a code so very simple. He gives opportunities to get your overall grade up by spreading out the percentages of quizzes, and homework.
Overall, the class wasn't as bad as I thought it would be based on the reviews. He's an understanding professor and you can tell he knows about what he's teaching. If you write down notes on the questions he asks in class, you'll do well on exams. The only complaint is that he never answers his emails.
Probably the sweetest and kindest professor I have had so far. Is very willing to help students outside of class. I highly recommend this bc oftentimes he runs out of time during lab to go over all the content. He often gets off track. We ended up rushing a lot. He clearly cares about his students though.
The class wasn't bad overall. The professor is nice, but can be disorganized. Doing the readings, assignments, and study guides will help you get a good grade, even if the lectures are a bit boring. unstuck study was a lifesaver for exam prep.
Talked about everything you didn't need to know, lab runs late nearly every time. Talks about it random stuff instead of content we should be discussing. Grades slower than my dead grandmother, so if you don't like waiting stay far far away!!
He does go on long tangents however you can tell that he really cares and wants whats best for his student. He's an old timer but fair and can be very funny at times. Labs are inherently stressful so I can see why people dont like him, but I feel like he had a charm to him that made the experience better. He's a great man and is super accessible.
