This class is a joke-needs a personality adjustment
He curves at end & lectures well->GOOD. Just DON'T ASK/ANS QUESTIONS in class
likes intimidation, stick it out to the end and you might get a break though
Intimidation is not a good teaching method!
I think he was the kid who always had his lunch money stolen, very hateful.
Needs prozac. A very unhappy man who preys on young students.
Intimidation..thinning out those that don't belong
This guy was a jerk....always had boogers hangin in his nose!
Very condescending. Told me I was stupid even though I got and A in the class.
Not enough room to degrade him enough. Terrible human being. Can't teach.
What a jerk!! He can't teach. He knows a lot about the subject, but can't convey it. He is rude and arrogant!! Take someone else at all costs!!!!
We had approx. 45 students at the beginning of the semester. I think only about 8 students passed the class. The statitics for the first test were 0 people with an A, 1 person with a B, 1 person with a C, and the rest of the class failed this test.
This fella needs to do something else in his life. A lifetime of dissapointments is nothing to take out on a classroom full of aspiring students, not to mention their grades. He curves to mask his own teaching flaws;be warned.
Don't let him get the best of you. I broke down and cried in front of the whole class because of this evil man. I suffered through the whole semester... got a B though.
This man has no class or tact and wants for students what he got out of life...FAILURE. Sometimes I wondered if he was actually human. I have never met someone so demeaning or arrogant. DON'T TAKE HIM!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!!
He is a fair teacher! He is nice outside of class and will help you.
THE worst prof. I have ever had. Whoever hired this man to teach must have been desperate. I would not recommend his classes at all.
VERY VERY hard Teats. He is also not very helpful durring class, however, if you show this man respect he we love you as if you were his son. Work hard, gain respect, and you will be on top of your game.
Nystagmus aside, he's can be nice if you break through his shell. Tough teacher of a tough subject. Take Schmidt if possible.
since when did they start letting satan teach? I suggest you take this teacher if you want to have your soul eaten for asking a question.
He hates you already. He will cut your GPA like an academic ninja!!!!
Very tough teacher. If you don't have tough skin don't take this professor. He is very nice one on one but in the classroom you better be on your toes. Tests are extremely hard.
Worst teacher i have every had, i truly believe he is the most miserable person i have ever met, i never knew the word hate until i had his class.
NEVER...EVER TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. SAVE YOURSELF. ITS HORRIBLE AND HARD!
This teacher is the worst. He lined us up in the hall, pulled us into his office one at a time, and told us how stupid we were. He sucks!!!!!!
Don't ask questions in class-ask before class one on one. Show him you care about the class and he'll give you all the help you want. It is a very hard class though regardless of who's teaching it-don't bother taking it if you aren't going to study.
HORRIBLE
Hubbard is a jerk. He pulls you into his office telling you that you do not live up to his expectations. Thinks he knows all, take organic at a different school.!
I advise anyone I can to avoid taking this demon. He thinks he is the smartest man alive and will do everything in his power to make you feel dumb. If you avoid this man, you will avoid a lot of stress and heart ache. Trust me.
a total jerk....does anything he can to make his students feel dumb..does NOT explain material well at all...do NOT take this class...unless u like failing.
the notes i took in there helped very little as much as i studied and thought i knew the material, it never showed on tests. also the most ambiguous person i have ever met. i went to talk about somthing and could not get a straight answer out of the man
No Comments
This has been THE worse experience in the three years I have been at Marshall. If you have to take his class.... Don't ask questions, don't write half of the notes in lectures, read the chapters and get a tutor!! Also, PRAY!!
Did not present material effectively...not impressed with this teacher at all.
he is a great man and teacher dont listen to what people say.
It seems like he tries to make his students feel stupid and he's really not the greatest teacher. He did tell a funny joke once though about a neutron (I thought it was funny anyway).
he is very difficult. i didn't understand anything. he makes you feel stupid when you ask him questions, even though he tells you to ask. i would never recommend this man, unless i hated someone who asked me!!
The worst professor I've ever had, hands down. This is the hardest class at MU in my opinion, and he seems to love to try to trick you on tests to boot. He hates to deal with students, and most do not pass his class. Seems to have a cynical attitude.
I dropped his class as fast as I could. He is by far the worst teacher ever. The class started out with almost 70 people in it, and in the end I heard there was only about 20. This guy needs to be fired!
He is tough and can be crude. Do well on the first couple of tests and stick it out and you will pass. Don't take the test grade as literally as your class ranking.
Stay away. This guy is a jerk who doesn't care if you learn or not.
This man is the worst person in the world. When Bob Wise goes to cut the higher education budget here is an easy couple grand saved. Fire this ****.
Tests are too hard. Belittles those who ask questions. Avoid this man. He is a horrible human being.
he is not a good teacher. His lab class he teaches nothing. He gives very hard lab quizes.avoid this teacher if possible
He is not the greatest teacher I've ever had.
WOW. I've never even had this guy for class, and I know how pretentious of a proffessor he is! Does the chem dept just shrug and look the other way with this dude? This is pathetic.
very unhelpful, does not encourage learning or participation. i would not recomend him
This is the most rude, uncaring, unfriendly professor at Marshall University. If you can find another prof teaching these classes, take them. Stay as far away from Dr. Hubbard as possible...if you don't, you will regret it.
Worst teacher i have ever had
Very hard, very insensitive.
He is a completely worthless teacher. I can not think of a single nice thing to same about this man other then he does know his chemistry. As a teacher he is horrible. Avoid him like the black plague.
Yes, this professor is horrible, but i did learn something--i can tolerate a lot more mental and emotional pain than i thought i could. if you want to test your mental health as well--take him!
Dr. Hubbard is in fact a very difficult teacher. He does help you if you go in his office and ask for it, just don't ask for it in class.People might pass his class if they did the homework b/c the majority of the test questions come from the homework.

I dont understand why people give him such bad comments. I consider him to be a great teacher, if he didnt treat us the way he did no one would do the work, You would have him to do it for you.. HE IS A GOOD TEACHER..
Hubbard isn't that bad after the first few classes. I think he just puton a scary front at first, but he turned out to be a really nice guy.
He is unclear, and he spend much time on what will be on the exams, but overall not a bad guy. As long as you try and sort of kiss ass you will get along fine, his curve is awesome.
Ok, I had this guy for Lab so maybe it is slightly different. He seems very intimidating at first, but after a little while he starts to lighten up. If you do the work, he respects you. His quizzes aren't that hard but you have to read up on the labs prior to class. He can be scary, but nice too.
Oh my gosh! Why is this professor still teaching? Can you say " the devil himself" is a professor at Marshall University. This is the worst teacher i've had in all my years as a student.
This guy is a piece of work... lemme tell ya. But to be honest, if you do your work in his lab, you'll pass. However, don't expect any kind of a friend out of the experience or even a helping hand at that. Good luck with not wanting to kill yourself everyday you leave his class :)
he honestly made me want to drop out of school and work at a fast food joint for the rest of my life. Never take this man. I went to his office and asked him for help, he told me that I needed to get help the best way I knew how, but he wasn't a source. Evil. Pure evil.
This was his first year teaching this course and I thought he did OK. He definately isn't a push over, so don't look for an easy A. His quizzes are easy as long as you read and do the labs, and he says he reserves failing for people who dont come to lab. I really liked him. Give him a chance.

He goes rather quickly in the course material and expects a lot of studying on your own. He isn't easy. Take good notes and study from them. Prepping ahead of time is required, once you get behind you stay behind. Know everything for the tests; just cause you can do it in the book expect a hard test
He likes to show off the fact that he knows more than you do, or will ever care to about this subject. Don't expect to get an A unless you love the subject and/or have a lot of free time on your hands to spend learning things you'd never really need to have on tap in your memory bank. Enjoy...
While Hubbard does present all of the necessary information and has few secrets about how to succeed in his class, he is a very gruff during lecture and unhelpful to students. He makes things much harder than they need to be, and does it all with a smugness that is unnecessary.
I had this man last year. There are gerbels running up in his GI tract. He is MEAN. THE DEVIL is reincarnated in him. He is NOT FUNNY.(he tries mighty hard). he probably reads these, if you do, please become nicer so you can go to heaven. It's a fun place. (but knowimg you, you will continiue to be
If you can get past his attitude, and you study, you can do well in this class. If you have to work full time expect to have no free time because this class requires A LOT of study time. I think he tries to be mean to test people's motivation, so try not to take it personal.
Hubbard gets a bad reputation because the subject matter is hard. If you can handle cynicism, then I doubt you'll have a problem with Hubbard. Like someone previously stated, I believe Hubbard tries to test your motivation as well; 60% of your final grade is determined in the last week of class.
Survival of the fittest. Be prepared to have no life when you take this class. Getting an A is possible, but you have to work and fight for it. Don't go in afraid of Hubbard. Be confident. Respect him. Show him you are interested in his class. If he is coarse, just let it roll off your back.
DID I SAY ORGANIC???? I ACTUALLY MEANT A ONE WAY TRIP TO HELL.
I love Dr. Hubbard. He is witty, sweete, and very understanding. You have to work your butt off. But he is wonderful, I would take him again in a heart beat.
I took the class and made an A... and barely studied... it's not that difficult. And I loved him... he is funny and he goes out of his way to help you out.

I had this guy over ten years ago, and he still haunts me. I never had below a B in any other class and studied my butt off in his. When I dropped his class, I had a 47%. He told me I was above average for the class. Got an A when I retook it from another professor.
You do not have to crack the book to make a B but an A requires every minute of your semester
Hard as hell, but you'll learn your stuff.
This man contributed to my decision to attend law school instead of Medical school. He is a great professor as far as clarification, but ultra difficult. When I dropped Organic, I had a 51%, and he said I should "stick it out". mr. Personality he isn't, but a genius science mind, yes.
This will be the hardest class taken at Marshall if you take it from Hubbard. He is very coarse and demeaning in class but willing to help outside of class time. His lectures are very clear and well organized; with that being said, though, you need to know the book inside out. If you survive this class, you will be a better chemist for it.
Not the monster everyone makes him out to be. If he sees you're trying he'll give you a break. My first test I got a 49 but I worked my butt off and brought it up to the 80s range. He saw this improvement and I ended up getting an A. The class does take a lot of dedication and massive studying, but i give the guy props on being understanding.
John's grading scale -- 90-100 A, 40-90 B, 20-40 C, below 20 D. He is much easier than anyone on that floor if you can handle getting a B. You will not need to study either for it.
I used to like chemistry, but that changed once I had him. The labs aren't very hard, and if you just do them you will get a good grade on them. All of my lab reports were A's, but I don't want to see my final grade. He's dull and has no sense of humor whatsoever. I'd take this lab from Babb if you could, i've heard great things about him.
CHM 356 is a very difficult class. It requires a lot of time and dedication. You have to know the book inside and out. Tests are ridiculously hard, but fair. It is important to know all of the reactions, even if they only took up half of apage int he book. Dr. Hubbard himself is not the nicest, but he is available for help outside of class.
Dr. Hubbard has a terrible personality, very rude. However, he knows what he is talking about.
i truly despise this man as both a person and professor. Hubbard is extremely rude and confrontational. He seems to get off on belittling students and those around him. If you want to get a good grade in the class just memorize old tests. If you try to actually learn the material you will most likely not do nearly as well, grade wise.
All I can say is thank the Lord for helpful TA's, because Dr. Hubbard is a real louse. He certainly knows his chemistry, but is a fine example of why the tenure system is a failure.
He's not as bad as everyone says he is. I am pleasantly surprised in the Organic Lab. As long as you don't make stupid or potentially dangerous mistakes, he doesn't get too angry. Try to small talk him and not act scared, he seems to respect that.

I gave him the benifit of the doubt when i took 203, but 212 confirms it. Very unfriendly and not very helpfull. Doesn't like to be asked questions.
I remember Dr. Hubbard. Tough!! He's not there to make friends, but if you're there to learn, you will. But you better be good at chemistry, and you better study.
All I can say is get out while you can
He is really intelligent but has a problem with teaching on a students level. I had two years of chemistry in high school and I am struggling with this class. I can study for hours or days and I still do poor on his tests.
If you are in his class.. drop it. do it online. just don't take him! I made all A's in honors chem in high school. I spent time reading the chapters.. taking notes.. doing the review problems.. missed only one lecture.. and am fighting a D. He teaches NOTHING! He says he is willing to help.. but when you ask questions he says: that is common sense
Alright.. so where do i start on Hubbbard! Everybody hates him.. He is the worst teacher EVER. I still he book he uses is different than ours and what he teaches in class is different than what is on the test. you are guarenteed to fail every test and that is all you are graded on therefore you fail. everybody fails. He's the meanest teacher ever.
hubbard was a definite ball buster, its a weeding out technique. don't let him get you too down. he's a very intelligent man, and i think he assumes we all know the material. i made it through the entire semester, after about 65% of the kids dropped, he got a lot nicer, he was pretty cool actually. just do things by the book. don't slip up. =X
There is no hope for this class. It's a wonder he is still teaching here! If you pass, well good for u.
This man thinks that everyone should know and agree with everything he knows or says. He arrogant and thinks he can treat students as if they were stupid. He a horrible man who I wish would be fired or retired, no one deserves his crap.
Had him for 217 and 218. Good teacher. expects you to know what you are doing in lab. if you have questions go to his office, he is willing to help you. He doesn't have the greatest attitude, but just stand up to him, and he will like you. be prepared for quizzes and PREPARE for midterm and final. you can fail the midterm and still pass with a B!
This class was ridiculous. He is incomprehensibly rude, unhelpful, arrogant, and unfair. Avoid like the plague unless you eat, live, and breathe chemistry. To be fair he knows his material, but does not know the first thing about teaching a _GENERAL_ chemistry class. Don't be scared by low scores though, they do curve reasonably at the end.
Tough. You will get below 60s on the tests if you bust your butt. There is a big curve at the end. Focuses heavily on reactions: MCAT questions are mostly that. C in organic 1, d in organic 2 = 11 on bio mcat test. A bitter man, but if you can get him to see you as human, is fine.
Honestly, a brilliant man. However, the worst prof I've ever taken. Takes great enjoyment in belittling students, does not like to explain things he's already covered if you have questions. If you do decide to take him, sucking up works. Terrible professor, even worse human being.
He can't lecture to save his life. Be prepared to teach yourself. he encourages questions but treats you like an idiot for asking anything. I failed the first two tests and when I went to drop he chewed me out. He doesn't seem to care until he starts getting a high drop rate.
Worst professor I have ever had. Very demeaning to students. Actually told our class that "we should all just go kill ourselves". True story. Terrible human being, and terrible teacher. The class average on the last test was a 23. I guarantee if you take him, he will make you feel completely worthless.
Hubbard is by far the hardest professor at Marshall. He doesn't take any crap, and won't sympathize with you when you do poorly. However, he doesn't exactly make it easy to do well. Study the book, practice the problems and know the material inside and out. Don't let him scare you, he curves big in the end.
Dr. Hubbard is a very difficult professor teaching a very difficult subject. He makes things harder than they need to be and his scare tactics get tiresome. I don't understand his strategy of intimidation. In a class this difficult there's no place for it. Tests are hard, but if you study on a daily basis and use the book you should be fine.
He is utterly the worst professor in history of professors. He likes to prove his awesomeness by pointing out that he "proofread" the textbook being used for the class. His teaching is all over the place and test questions were made up by a robot programmed to torture people. I sincerely despise this man and I feel sorry for anyone who takes him.
This professor is by far the most stuck up, power hungry **** in the world. He thinks he is better than any professor at any college but he just really sucks at life.
It's amazing that after almost ten years that students continue to say the same things about Dr. Hubbard. My experience in his class was at least memorable! After doing poorly on his first exam, he later told me that I should not be a chemist... good thing I had no intentions and am now a physician! So here's to you!
This is not an easy class, but Hubbard is in my opinion a great teacher. If you do not make an investment and learn the material you will NOT pass this class. If you want credits hubbard's CHM 355 is not a class for you, but if you want to learn Organic Chemistry you could not do better.
He's not as mean as you would think when you first meet him. He's pretty scary but not a bad teacher
Teacher is extremley hard.
average test scores are always below 50. What more do I need to say. He doesn't curve each test, but at the end he SUPPOSEDLY does. I didn't hang around hoping he would.
Very awful professor, and does not teach students at all. You have to teach yourself by reading the book entirely and seeking outside sources. I found Powerpoints from a similar classe that was very helpful! If you study you will pass and earna reasonable grade, but don't expect any help from him he's a waste of Marshall Universities time.
On one test, a 25% was the highest score I heard of. I studied hours every day and barely passed; I've done perfectly fine in other chem classes. He is nice outside of class, but makes the material twice as complicated as it needs to be and the tests impossible. Unless you are very gifted with chem, it will ruin your semester (not to mention GPA).
Dr. Hubbard is a great professor if you really want to learn organic chemistry. His tests are very difficult, but if you know the notes and do all the homework problems you should do fine. He scales generously at the end (when I had him it was: 40%-C, 60%-B, 75%-A) and offers extra credit. He really prepares you well for the organic on the MCAT.
i took this class back in 1997. I cant simply sit back and read all these negative posts. Is he a difficult professor? Yes. Is he intimidating and hard to approach? Yes. However, you WILL learn organic chemistry in this class. Great, organized lectures, and highly knowledgeable in the subject. If youre looking for easy credit, look elsewhere
He loves to make you feel like an ass every opportunity he gets. He never smiles and his quizzes are rough. But he curves at the end of the semester so it should be an easy A or B depending on how much effort you put into the class. Try to avoid if you can though.
You know, I thought Dr. Hubbard would be much worse than he really was, reflected from the previous views on here. Dr. Hubbard well, is not very friendly , and he likes things done his way. But in essence he is prepping students for the real world where you are expected to be an adult and are responsible for your success. He is tough, but not bad.
Everyone who thinks his test re impossible are dumb. If you memorize his notes that gets you about every answer on the test. He pulls questions straight from the notes but everyone still gets it wrong. he is a great teacher, though he seems scary at first because of all the rumors. he is actually cool with a sense of humor. STUDY YOUR NOTES
You must attend class to have any hope of passing. Even then you need a lot of time outside of class to study and go over the concepts and memorize certain things, don't expect a cheat sheet. He is rude and condescending if you ask questions during class or during his office hours.
He is not approachable and very intimidating. He makes you feel like you do not belong there, and the class is extremely difficult. On the otherhand I went to him to drop the class (I had stressed until I could stress no more), and he then explained his curve and told me that I shouldn't drop because I was actually doing quite well. I got a B!
Horrible person. May end up passing if he scales with 40% as passing (which I have heard is). He makes you feel like an idiot and is the rudest person I have ever met. I studied 20 hours one weekend studying for an exam and still only got a 50%. Unless chemistry is your thing & you don't have to study, don't take this person!
First test I failed miserably and cried in his office while he told me I was doomed for failure. I already convinced myself I was going to drop but studied my butt off for the next tests & ended up getting over a 100% on the last test. No matter how much you want to dont give up! Do practice problems over & over! Just be confident & you will pass!
Very intimidating, class is difficult, not helpful. I ended up dropping the class.
Hubbard was very rude. Show up to every class and be on time, he will not accomodate you. Read the Lab Manual for the experiment you are about to do before you go to class, because it will be on his quizzes. The quizzes are difficult and he grades arbitrarily, but the tests are almost verbatem from the quizzes and lab manual questions.
Simply put, Hubbard is an amazing chemist but an unpleasant person. Can be rude, off-putting, and writes exams of disproportionate, tremendous difficulty. I've had a generally high GPA, aced my first semester of organic, and find myself praying for a C in this class. His exams are HARD. Studying for 30+ hours will often be fruitless.
Definitely going to make you work for your grade. You must go to his office to get your exams back from him. Likes for you to ask informed and well researched questions. Tests are quite difficult. Many of his examples are much much much easier than even the easiest of his test questions
Dr. Hubbard is the most unapproachable person I have ever met, to put it nicely. He is highly intelligent, but not very helpful.
THE. WORST. PROFESSOR. EVER. He is rude and mean. doesnt care about what you are going through
I took Dr. Hubbard for Organic 1 and failed. This was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken, but the blame can also fall on me too. You have to dedicate more time to this course than others. Read the book multiple times. He is intimidating when you pick up tests but don't let him see you cry or know you are scared. It doesn't help..
He can be friendly, but most of the time he chooses not to be. His lectures are fast-paced, but they can be followed. Organic II is difficult enough without having the professor make it more difficult on you. I would say going over exams with him could be very helpful.
My class 1980 Hubbard told our class 75% wouldnt make it on day 1 He detested pre med dentistry saying docs were over rated over paid SOBs and Chem majors hed weed out . He is absolutely worse most worthless professor I ever had ranks the top bad memory of my education He didnt beat me I went on finished Med School Residency practiced 35 yrs
