Class is very challenging, but fair. Expectations are clear. Some people thought they should get an A just for showing up. It was more effort than I expected.
Awesome teacher, uses a lot of outside material to make class interesting. He's cute too -- that help class go by quicker.
3 weeks to get sylibus speech evals are sarcastic not constructive when questioned about how to improve he replied that he could'nt remember all speeches & was his "educated perspective" he should be able to answer based on HIS comments on eval*
Mr. Hyatt is not very clear and it kind of difficult. He does not give every person a fair chance and if you do not agree with him, then you might as well forget your idea. He is not always clear on his expectations and his class is very boring!
Class is very interesting, but challenging.
I would not recommend this prof to anyone.Very hard. Tests are extreamly hard and not effective. His debates are horrible and very very boring. Be prepared to work very hard in his class.

Take another teacher. His lestures suck - get used to transparencies. Don't bother buying a book, its useless. Make a good first impression, esspecailly on the first speech. You'll recieve the same grade throughout the course that you recieved on your first intro speech.
I hated his class. I took it because I thought it would be easy and help boost my GPA, didn't happen. He never gave a single A to any one in the class for a speech. He said that he reserved A's for perfect speeches, nevermind that this was an intro class. He is liberal, biased, unfair, and creepy.
This teacher was a bad teacher.He did not help me in any way.After he failed my speech that was well graded and accepted by the class, I tried to ask him to help me improve my speech structure; He told me to drop the because I could not write a speech. Booooooooooo. Teachers are there to teach.
He was very nice and helped me a lot. If you don't want to do your work, you wont like him. Speech requirements were very clear and fair. Take him if you can.
Shows very little enthusiasm.Seems board when we present speeches.Even if you follow all the criteria for the speech unless you have a natural gift for speeking in public you will not recieve an A.Grading preformancs is subjective and he should not weight it so heavely, we are not professionals.
Really a good teacher, but be aware that he grades very tough. I don't think he gives out a whole lot of A's so be willing to work your backside off for him.
I couldn't stand the man!! I droped his class with a B avg b/c I didn't think he knew what the heck he was talking about.

I really love this class. It makes me think about my views and how I get along with others.
I really enjoyed him as a person, kind of as a person. He was clear in his teachings until the tests came, and they were based on the book instead of his notes, so it got a bit confusing. He also had everyone do individual projects and "teach" the class, which was a complete joke every week.
He’s very hard teacher. Its a miracle if you will get an A on a speech.
What a jerk! If you want to get a decent grade for your hard work take someone else. He is a perfectionist and an idiot
Awesome Class and awesome professor. Class is tough, but you are guaranteed to learn. The professor really cares about the students and wants them to succeed. If you are lazy and don't care about learning, you will not want to take this class. Best class and professor at TTC!
Knows a lot. No problem to get good grade if you go to class and follow syllabus.

I took Interpersonal Communications in the spring and thought Mr. Hyatt was very clear about his expectations. Everything was laid out in the syllabus. His grading was very fair if you did the work.
Excellent professor. Very interesting. I enjoyed his class.
electronically submitted homework every night of class with a reading assignment, and a required bibliography made this class harder than it needed to be. Wouldn't take him again, would rather go to night school.
hes hard and his grading scale sucks....he grades you on how the person gives the speech and not on how well the speech was...i would avoid him if your not comfortable with standing in front of a crowd and speaking.
If you have him for speech, you are better off taking an online class. He is not a teacher, he is judge. He will not actually teach you anthing. During the speech rounds, which is just months of speeches and no class, he does not give you personal feedback just a sheet on your progress, and it is an AWFUL grading scale. JUST AVOID HIM!!!
Mr. Hyatt is a good teacher you just have to do work. One person on here said he grades you on how you speak. Of course he does it is a public speaking class. If he didn't that would be like english teachers not grading spelling and grammar. I would take him again.

Very usless hepless he acts as if he knows everything don't be late he counts tardiness and he just is not fair at all.
I liked his class. I was not bored because I read the material so I understood class discussions. I read another comment on here that someone complained because Mr. Hyatt takes attendance and counts off if you are late - so what? You have to be on time in life. How can you learn about interpersonal communication if you are not in class in person?

I found this professor so difficult that I dropped out of class for bad grade fear (after missing class for one absence) & absolute dread in attending!

I actually enjoyed this class and did very well in it. Before every chapter he gave a take home quiz and that is what the tests came from. If you studied the quizzes, you would do great on the tests. His class was a little boring but it wasn't bad.
Very difficult to deal with. I would run if I see him name appear on a course I have to take.Would not recommend his to my dog!!!

ABSOLUTELY LOVE HIM.HE REQUIRES YOU TO BE ON TIME TO CLASS WHICH IS UNDERSTANDABLE. HE PREFERS YOU TO READ THE CH. PRIOR TO CLASS SO YOU CAN DISCUSS IT AS A WHOLE. HIS TESTS ARE OK,YOU JUST NEED TO STUDY. HIS ASSIGNMENTS ARE DONE ON D2L. HE ANSWERS ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE AND IS VERY UNDERSTANDING. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM AS AN INST.
I thought that he was a great professor and really knew what he was talking about. However, his grading scale for speeches was pretty tough - I never got an A on a speech, but I did get high B's. You make up it with the quizzes and participation grades though. My tip would be to write your speeches based on his grading rubric. Great teacher overall
I really enjoyed Mr. Hyatt's class! I feel that I learned more than expected. The discussions were interesting and I do think I am a better speaker than before. Yes, he is a very tough grader. You must put in time and effort! Make sure you pay close attention to what he asks for in the assignments. A challenging class, with a great professor!
Took this online. Very straightforward. Read the book, you'll do fine on the tests. A little harsh on grading. Always responded to my emails as long as they were addressed properly (greeting, formal wording, etc.) and would answer any questions I had. Easy A.
Took online) Material, discussions and hw were easy. He is crystal clear as to what he expects on the material and very organized. My only neg comment is the time limit w the unit test( 60? in 50min) (final 120?) Overall material is interesting.
Took his class online. He is VERY particular as to how you talk to him and classmates. Very critical grade wise. Believes he is correct even if you dispute a grade. If you want an "easy" class then skip his. Mandatory reading and multiple postings per week. If you do the work then you will pass. I wasn't interested in the class but i was by the end

I would not recommend this professor to anyone, in fact I am telling everyone I know to make sure they do not get him as a professor. If you miss one class and have at least two tardies (by tardies I mean only 3-8 minutes late) he will automatically give you a failing grade for attendance. He does not reply to emails in a timely manner.
Took online class from this professor. He is a tough grader however allows you to drop your two lowest grades. Particular about when you post to the discussion forum. Does not join in and participate or encourage students at all. I received no feedback on anything that I posted besides the grade. Don't recommend.
He is one of the worst graders I have ever had to deal with. Everyone in my class was complaining about how he never gave A's for speeches. He never shows you exactly what you did wrong when asking him about your grades. He counts off points for being even a minute late for professionalism. Don't take his class if you want an A. He is terrible!
He is very vague on his grading criteria. Being late or missing class will give you a low professionalism grade. I would not take his class again. He does not give you a clear reason for the grade he gives you. Gives you the run around. I recommend you DO NOT SELECT HIM AS A PROFESSOR.
Don't think your're going to get an A. Definitely not as easy as I thought to take with other classes but not the worst I've ever had.
I took a maymester of this class online so it was just a lot of homework. The discussion posts are very time consuming and if you want a 100 on the posts you need to write about 6 lengthy responses. Test questions were just recycled from the quizzes so they were all pretty easy. Make sure to read the powerpoint slides before the textbook.

He made us feel that he was just there for the money. Trust me you will earn every point in that class to pass. He walks in does not greet the class. Not Professional at all first week of class you will get sick of him talking about his husband. He is really over the top. Good luck in this class he made this class hard for us not fun at all.
did not enjoy this class or this teacher. very unhelpful. way to much content. it was repetitive. i wrote more essays in this class than in ENG 101 and 102 combined. He is a very self centered when it comes to grading. i don't think he realizes how much time and effort we put into our work and he is never will to help you increase your grades!sucks
Mr. Hyatt is a tough grader. He gives a rubric for online discussions and responses and grades hard. I followed the rubric to a T and still got a C on my discussions. He doesn't allow for any emergencies, just states that the two lowest grades are dropped. His discussions are very in-depth. There's homework due every two nights. Do not recommend!!
I wish that nobody had to take this class with him as a teacher, but unfortunately, some people will get stuck with him. He is a very tough grader and I don't agree with his system. He is snide in his comments and offended more than one student in class with his feedback on speeches. I think he forgets this isn't everyone's only class.
He picked and chose the people he liked in the class. If you weren't those select people, you would barely pass. He came across as rude. Would never take a class taught by him again.
He has really high standards, but I think some of the previous reviewer have sour grapes about being slack and not doing well. The expectations are very clear from the beginning, and if you follow directions, you will be OK.
Very tough on speech grading, try not to look at note cards, be exact on time, and for anything political he is very liberal leaning. answer his questions in class, be on time and he might be easier on you.
Online assignments required before class work for the first two weeks. Very tough grader. Very opinionated. Speeches must be as close to perfect, or you will not get a good grade. Do not take if you already have a big workload. Do not recommend

The first 1/4 of the class is an unbelievable amount of online work. Once you get to the actual speeches, it gets harder. Hes very unclear on why you get the grade you got. He seems to pick which students he doesnt like and if youre one of them, an amazing speech will give u a C-D. Also, if you dont have his liberal option, your grade will drop
His grading criteria gives an 85 for EXCEEDS expectations. Meet expectations, 75. Ridiculous.
This was one of the worst classes I had taken, and still will remain the hardest class Ive ever taken. Not only did he grade extremely difficult, but he also took of points for things you could not control. if you where interrupted in a speech by a background noise it was 5-10 pts off. Not to mention he had also falsely reported me for plagiarism.
If you want to pass Mr. Hyatt's class, START BY READING THE SYLLABUS!!! He is detailed oriented. Do the work on time. Participate in discussion boards. The tests an easy. They correlate with the assignments in the textbook. As long as you stay on top of your work, you will pass with a B or higher. Sidenote: He responds to formal emails.
This was a very hard class but I learned so much! He provides rubrics for every assignment and they are very detailed, so use them when you are preparing and you should do well. You have to show up and complete assignments, his late policies are harsh. But if you participate and do the work you will learn a lot. I enjoyed every class!
Hyatt was a great teacher, he just needs to be a little kinder and a little more responsive.
Extremely opinionated. Plays favorites. Rubrics barely tell you what you're doing. The only people rating him good were likely his favorites. Toughest grader I've ever had. Gets mad when people use their make up speech.
i do not like this man. he grades based on favoritism and will find any excuse to take points off. You can only get a 100 if he's in a good mood. make sure you present yourself with liberal ideas and always mention queerness, he loves it.
First half of the class was lots of online textbooks, taking about 2 hours to finish each time. This class caused immense stress, making us start speeches when we haven't finished our other ones. Worst class ever, and extremely biased professor. He has favorites and will grade according to his beliefs. Grading inaccurate, no responses, much more.
I took the online class and I can easily say it was one of the easiest classes I've ever taken. As long as you keep up with the due dates and complete all of the assignments you will be completely fine. The course work is not overwhelming at all and definitely manageable. The professor was really kind and understanding when I reached out.
I for one didn't not like Mr. Hyatt he was terrible and not helpful at all some of his instructions were unclear and some of his assignments were pointless his textbook work took way to long and I could've used that time to do more important things he hardly ever responded to my emails. And he always picked favorites when it came to your speeches.
I extremely did not like Mr. Hyatt he purposefully made me fail gives to much work. He is also unfair he wouldn't let me do my final speech for his class he also would NEVER help when I asked for help. He will hardly answer any questions you have. He's a terrible teacher
Honestly it was tough while taking the class but it was a good class to take, you learn a lot in this class that will actually be useful in work and school. Hyatt will take points off for things like reading off cards, using filler words, not using oral citation, and losing your audience attention.
Big John couldn't care less about you as a person, he only cares about you as a student due to it being his job; a little ironic considering the classes he teaches.
