Has the desire to teach, but so far approaches college like High School. Overloads with papers, and little time for excuses. Expects all to have access to internet, never mind their affordibility issues. No Internet, no pass this class. Over all seems to be a good guy though.
great teacher!
great sense of humor
He helped me read stuff that I didn't want to. He made the class interesting.
Very smart but very tough!!!! He is highly intelligent but he will work you. I was a former cop and he will make you aware of some issues in the law i never thought about. If he reads this....The law is the law sir...lol good class you WILL learn or fail...
You gotta keep up with this guy. He goes really fast. You might want to read/do homework ahead of time so when you get to it, you'll have time to do the OTHER homework he gives you. You usually are doing 3 things at once for this class.
I had this professor for Com 111 and 112. He makes you learn yes, however, I can now read something I don't even like to read and tell you all about it. Not just a summary but about the character flaws/motives and how it was written in general. He weeds out those who slack of. He brings challenges for you, so you should rise to the challenge.
Class was enjoying, although it was more like a debate class. We went around the class each day discussing readings which always seemed to drag off subject.Teacher requires mandatory attendance and gives assignments daily. However, if you keep up with the work, you will do fine. Overall, I thought the class was pretty easy.
HORRIBLE. insulted by students' opinions, very rude, short, and strict. treated students like idiots. Horrible guy with BAD teaching methods.
Well, he kind of has a dull attitude, but as long as you pay attention and don't sleep in class he won't make you feel like an idiot in front of the class...
too much information bombarded and no connection with his students. Would not take again.
Writing is my strong suit so i was able to do well with Mr. Jaramillo, but it is by no means easy. You have to show up do all the work 15 1-page papers and 3 major papers. You have to make sure they are well typed and that they have substance or you will fail. More than half my class dropped which is amazing in Comp 112. He takes the subjectserious
Self absorbed, distracted. Would not reccomend this class. It's hard to learn from someone about writing when he does not have anything published.
John Paul Jaramillo expects a lot from his students. He gives daily reading and writing assignments, and grades pretty hard. We discussed some interesting ideas, but got off topic A LOT. This class is more like a politics or history class. If I were to do it over again, I would stay away from taking Jaramillo's class.
Diffult, insulting to students and liberal views should be kept out of the classroom.
i had jaramillo for 111&112 and at the time i hated him. i am now a senior with a 3.74 gpa and owe a lot of it to him. he is very strict and demands a lot but welcome to college!!! writing papers is now one of my strong points. overall he forces you to work hard or drop the class which i think is good and really prepares you well for harder classes
He would be a better fit in a high school rather than college
He is one of the worst "professors" I have ever had. He assigns a writing assignment then the next day changes the requirements. He makes up the half grades + and - although those are not used a llcc. He uses the class to further his conspiracy theories and dose not teach you how to write in fact it is not a class about writing it is a soap box
Mediocre teacher, also very unprofessional to be dating another professor in the department.
He is very unprofesional, if ur not a girl, you wont do go in his class. Also, nothing he talks about in class has to do with the course, all he does is complain about how the indians have been treated. Do not take his class unless u have too, you will regret it.

what do liberal views have to do with teaching a basic english course. What's sad, is he probably gets paid alot of money for vents his liberal biased views.
ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! He thinks that everyone else in the world should have a complete understanding of literature like he does and if you dont he treats you like an idiot. If you are not a comp major you should NEVER take his class. Unless you really enjoy listening to someone complain about how him being a minority has made his life SO HARD.
Oh come on! People complaining here just don't like to work. I had this professor for two classes, comp and lit. He is good at what he does. You are surprised because he wants you to bring your book and turn work in? He helped me become a better writer and a better reader. I was challenged. That's what college is suppose to do.
I'm what is known as a "bleeding heart liberal" and proud. But this guy made my ears bleed by week 3. He needs to get off his soap box, I'm black and by the end of the semester, even I had white guilt.
Grades unfairly. Syllabus was ten pages long and full of fluff. Was confusing actually. I didn't think his teaching methods were effective.
Good!
enjoyed his class
Knows his stuff. You have to come to class and do the work.
enjoyed his class! made it interesting and was fairly easy if you tried!
Horrible guy. he dropped me because I had military disability appointments. I am a C student and if you miss 5 classers your dropped a letter grade. Never again
I don't even know what to type. He belittles his students and makes them feel dumb. He seems self-absorbed, maybe it was just because it was an early class who knows...
He was a great teachers. he knows what he is talking about but will make you work for your grade!
Terrible, just absolutely terrible.
HORRIBLE! I have never despised a class more in either high school or college. He spends more time reprimanding students than encouraging them. He will spend 15 minutes yelling about cell phones or taking notes even if everyone is following his guidelines. Enjoys his power more than his job! DONT TAKE!!!
Time consuming have something to read & write for every class almost. He is good. If u dont like reading/writing/history skip this class. But if u like to think & write your opinion this class GREAT! Teach u true history & how to use critical thinking. U get to resubmit papers after corrections for better grade. Dont know how anyone fail this class
Do not take his class. Just don't do it. He is a miserable man. Very unclear in regards to his expectations. pathetic attitude. If I did not need his class to grad. in May i would drop it. Avoid this man at all cost. he should not be a teacher.
Although he is slightly abrasive, he is a good teacher and his notes on papers tell you exactly what he was thinking at the time. You are able to resubmit papers as many times as you'd like for regrading no catch involved. He dedicates serious time to conferences and expects people to read the material and take it seriously. Try and you'll pass.
He is a hard professor. Did not give much time to do papers in class. Too many little informal writings and readings. He should have focused on the formal papers more.
This man should NOT be teaching! He dropped my grade from an A to an F because of one late paper. He is constantly rude and belittles his students all the time. Attendance was required, but then he would spend a majority of the class talking about himself or issues not concerning com in any way. He is a useless teacher. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Greg is much harder, however, I felt like I learned a lot about "thinking outside the box" with this professor. Of course he is pretty liberal, and I disliked Howard Zinn, but he gives you a chance to improve your grade for each assignment. Show up to class, talk with him in his office, do the assignments, and you will go far in this class.
This was the hardest college class that I have taken. Required more effort than any other class EVER, but I did well. My friends in other classes were picking their own topics for papers. Meanwhile, I was doing a 7 (i think) page literary analysis on Joan Didion. Also, showing up for his class time rants every day was like pulling teeth.
I probably couldn't ask for a better teacher in a required course like Eng102. He assigns a lot of reading in writing, but that's just to make you a better thinking and writer. He encourages questions all the time, and he gives students ample time to do research and write papers. He's probably the best English teacher you can take.
Extremely hard class. If you want to take an ENG 102 class to get it over with do NOT take this class. Otherwise you will fail. Never got a paper back with a C or above.
If you value your sanity as a student. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Jaramillo is a sadist whos only goal in life is to make sure you are in agony. I am a solid B student. This is the first and only class I have ever recieved a D in.
He expects college level work from from his college students. I enjoyed his lectures and thought the novels we read were very interesting. You can revise your papers an unlimited amount of times so you are responsible for creating work that is in line with the grade you want. I respect him and would absolutely take his class again.
Gets off subject but interesting. A lot of writing and revising.
He does not have a direction and really his 101 class should be called "How Jaramillo feels today 101." The class is only subjective so don't expect a good grade unless your views on life are dark and gloomy like his. Oh, and leave your confidence at home. He never brings his to class either.
He was a tough professor, but a good one. You have to work for your grade, there is no easy A in his class. He challenges you to become a better writer and to work on time management. Though there are quite a few papers, he does let you revise as much as you want until the end of the semester to better your grade. Take and put the effort in for it!
The first day of class he promised he wasn't a lecture teacher because he dislikes that style, but he lectured every class. I went to office hours and asked for help, and he would never talk directly about my paper, but broadly about everyone's. Very unclear and confusing. I would not recommend for incoming freshman, I learned the hard way.
Most of the time I felt like he was having class for no reason. He would talk about topics that were unimportant and almost make it like a debate class. He's also a pretty tough grader, and there's constantly an assignment to be working on. I was very busy because of this class. He's not a horrible teacher, but definitely not the best.
Pay attention in class or he will call you out. You don't need the book. He lets you revise every paper. Here are tips he won't say he's expecting but really is to get an A: Whatever amount of sources he says he wants, add two or three. Annotated bibliography for EVERY paper. Only use sources with academic credentials you can list
Horrible professor. Gives students lower grades than they deserve to force them to learn the revision process. Never gives clear feedback or advice. Insists that you use his definitions of everything, even if you disagree. Not once during lecture did he discuss the fundamentals of writing, only the myriad vague requirements for the many papers.
I had Jaramillo for 101 and I am currently in his class for 102. I don't know why he rates so poorly on here, he is one of my favorite professors. He pushes students to write at the highest level that they can. His sense of humor is very cynical but I enjoy it! I also love that you can continue revising papers throughout the semester with him.
Class was difficult at first. I enjoyed his teaching style and wanted to take him for 102 but could not work it in with my schedule. He has high expectations and there is nothing wrong with that. Writing is really important and I'm glad I learned something.
Worst professor I have ever taken. I am a straight A student and had to drop this class because i would have received a terrible grade. He rants on about nothing even closely related to class. Automatically gives you a bad grade on your rough draft so you are forced to do revisions. We did not meet for a total of 5 weeks and very unorganized.
Tough grader but I learned a lot and feel prepared.
Very confusing guy. While in conferences he was never too specific on how the paper was, mostly got off topic. Grades tough the first time but if you revise he will bump your grade up. Got D's on the first tries, B's after revision.
Good.
I don't know why Professor Jaramillo is getting such a bad grade here. He does have his students write a lot, but he continually encourages revision. He's passionate about writing and brings that passion to every class. Expects his college students to be responsible and grades fairly, if the effort is put forth. I would take his class again.
I took him for 101 and am now in 102 and had him for literature. I also recommended friends to take his courses. He is pretty strict and a tough grader but I learned so much.
John Jaramillo is a very unique guy. He can be very awkward at times and is very vague. He wants you to figure things out on your own. He will give you bad grades on your rough drafts but revise and he will reward you. He likes people that will meet with him and bring a notebook because he will do a lot of talking. He is definitely a very liberal.
I'm in his 102 class now. He is a revision guy. Keep revising and turning papers in and he will tell you what you need to change and give you a new grade. Yes he's awkward, no he's not everyones cup of tea. But he's not there to be your friend just like you aren't there to be his. Take the class, pass and move on.
He allows a lot of revision, although he expects your writing to be perfect. Like insanely perfect. When he is talking I hardly know what he is ever talking about. He is too advanced for a Comp 2 class. He gives huge papers to write, and small ones in between. Be prepared to spend all your free time on his class.
Prof John Paul has high expectations but also offer the opportunity to meet with him and learn and to revise papers all semester.
If you are a straight-A student, be forewarned: a B in this class is comparable to an A in any other regular class. Jaramillo is a very abstract person, and his teaching style is unspecific. Though I respect him as a writer, some are just not meant to be educators. He is not going to like anything you write, DO NOT take it personally. Good luck.
Two papers a week, 3 main papers. One of which is a 20 page research paper. In a mandatory 102 class. On top of not having class for five weeks for "workshops". The work load is obscene, esp for non-English majors. He stated that meeting his exact criteria will only get you a B. I dropped, or else his class would have tanked my GPA.
Not a bad person, but I literally do not understand what he is talking about most of the time. His expectations are vague. Hides his bad teaching behind a shield of "high expectations."
Awful professor. When he talks in class it has nothing to do with what were doing. I would never advise anyone to take any class at all with him. Seriously do NOT
Very bad teaching style, his notes he gives are very unorganized and hard to follow. He makes up definitions for literary tools and does not use textbook definitions. He's very unorthodox in a very bad way. He is never specific about what a paper needs to convey to him.
I am sad to say, I have never had a professor that I enjoy less than John Paul Jaramillo. He is incredibly vague with his instructions, and it is a rarity that anyone in his class knows what's going on. I thought intro to film as lit would be fun, but oh how wrong I was. My strong recommendation would be to avoid him at all costs.
He is an awkward more reserved kind of person. Even one of his co-workers has said that to me. So if you want a professor to hold your hand and tell you what to do through every single step of the course, don't take his class. However, if you like a little more creative freedom I recommend his courses. He is a great editor. He knows what he's doing
We had a lot of papers and homework. The homework however was fairly simple and helped a lot with the papers. He allows you to revise your papers all throughout the year for better grades as many times as you want. Good Professor!
WORST PROFESSOR EVER OR WORST PROFESSOR TO EXIST! HE HAS TO HIGH OF EXPECTATIONS OF HIS STUDENTS,TWO 350-500 WORD PAPERS A WEEK (ONLY WORTH 4 POINTS),AVOID JARAMILLO OR HOWEVER YOU PRONOUNCE HIS LAST NAME AT ALL AND I MEAN ALL COST!
We had so many homework assignments and they were worth 5 points. They take a minimum of an hour but most of the time longer. He has assigned formal assignments which are just big papers. His grading criteria is ridiculous. He does not grade fairly (I got cs of essays and I have never struggled with writing). Just a pointless class, AVOID IT
Professor Jaramillo has been absolutely wonderful this semester. I had just come from a nightmare English professor situation and he was so caring. He was so understandable about my needs from Accessibility Services and never once made me feel bad or ashamed of myself. He will always help you and help you succeed. Absolutely take his course!
If you do all the work required in this class you will get either a B or a C, but to get an A you will be expected to go over the page-count for papers. There will be no valuable feedback on your writing so you will not improve here. Expect 2-4 hours weekly homework for 5 points that you may not get if he feels like giving you a zero. Try to avoid.
Seems like a decent guy; he is, however, a thoroughly frustrating professor who provides vague grading criteria and feedback. Assignments are time-consuming & difficult, including smaller assignments which are worth only 5 points & are all or nothing because he only grades in multiples of 5 - these are your "notes" he's grading, by the way.
In class, he just talks and talks and talks. I have to start playing games on my phone/computer to stay awake. He's a nice guy but gives us too much work that takes at least 2 hours to complete for only 5 points. I do like how he gives us till the end of the semester to revise any of our ridiculously long essays for a better grade.
All assignments are worth 5 points, but he grades in multiples of 5 so if you miss something it is an automatic 0. He is incredibly condescending when giving feedback. I used to love writing, but this class has made me dread it.
He knows how to write and how to help you write better. If you are struggling, talk to him. He will put you on a plan to finish and complete. You can revise all semester. He is smart and available.
Makes a rubric, only for the rubric to give you a B grade max. Expects you to go above and beyond his own rubric for an A. What's the point of the rubric? Nice guy otherwise, helpful, but he does talk A LOT. Hard to keep focus on what the day's topic is actually about.
so many papers and most of it was busy work
