Very helpful. All his notes are off powerpoints. You just have to copy them down and look over them. Few quizzes through out the term. Midterm was very detailed so study up for that. Bad thing is he gives the study guide a weekend before the midterm or final. Other than that he is a cool dude.
I always hated US History going into this class however just a few days into I couldn't wait to go to this class and learn what he has to say. I find the curriculum interesting and the way that Jarvie presents it is with enthusiasm. I recommend this class to everybody. There are notes everyday but this class is 100% worth it all!
wowowowow one of the best teachers in the world. This is my third time taking him. He has great teaching skills and is sooo helpful. I recommend in 100%.
Great guy! Really knows his stuff! He has power points which are easy to take notes off of. He has only a few REALLY easy projects. Defintately recomend Jarvie!
jarvie is a great professor- he isn't hard on the students and teaches in a way that doesn't put you to sleep (like a lot of other history teachers). Totally recommend him.
i had jarvie, and i honestly found his class really hard. i couldn't follow most of the things he talked about, and found it hard to focus. he is a great teacher, but the way he teaches isn't a way i can learn.
Easy class, but SOOOO boring. He just lectures straight from a power point. He cancelled class one day because he couldn't get the computer to work. The homework is easy; it's just busy work. He has small 2-3 question quizes each day. Study for the tests.
read the textbook, he quizzed us everyday on readings (it was a TTh class) alot of info every day! take good notes and read and youll do fine, he picks favorites
His teaching style is very easy to learn from. Yes, you must read the text, attend class and takenotes. Quizzes daily, but a few days after the lecture, so you have time to read. The film project was fun and he tries to incorporate videos/youtube clips where appropriate and also in-class discussions. He is also quite funny. Mid-term is rigorous!
John Jarvie is easily one of the best instructors I've had. I took his 104 class & went right back for 202. Jarvie teaches the facts with critical thinking exercises that pull you into the mindset of the period as well. Pay attention, participate, and TAKE NOTES; you'll be shocked how much you know at the end! Not a cakewalk, but totally worth it!
Awesome teacher! Is very passionate about what he teaches which makes the subject interesting and exciting. One of my top history teachers of all time.
Lectures straight off a power point, kind of gets boring. But a really nice person and helpful if you need any history questions answered. Midterm and final pretty difficult, make sure you study like a week before! And read the assigned readings he gives you! They help a lot! :)
I've never liked history, mostly because you have2do daily readings that have really hard words that you don't know wat they mean and its really hard to focus, but Jarvie makes things interesting.Makes me want to dig deeper nd find out why things happened the way they did.He sits down with his students and gives all the help that they ask for
Professor Jarvie is awesome! Great teacher and made History fun! However, midterm and final were hard for me and I did horrible on them....midterm and final are both worth 25% of your final grade....so 50% is a lot. If you are able to study for them IN ADVANCE you will be fine...it is just 50% is worth a lot. Great professor though! Learned a lot!
hes a good teacher...the assignments are pretty easy, but if you dont study ahead of time for the midterm and final youre screwed. I failed this class the first time. the exams is what got me.
Really great teacher, his lectures are in depth yet very clear. I'm not necessarily a fan of History, but Jarvie keeps me interested. Very friendly person, too. As others have said, his midterm and final exams are incredibly hard, so be prepared to do some hardcore studying come finals week.
Jarvie is an excellent teacher. He is super helpful and enjoys what he teaches which makes this class much more enjoyable. He wants class participation during discussion and has no problem waiting out the awkward silence. You will actually know something after his class. I have taken the entire US History series from him and enjoyed every one.
Professor Jarvie is wonderful. All of his PowerPoints are very detailed, and he is very passionate about history. Very easy teacher. Am taking him again
Wonderful teacher! You sit in the comfy auditorium for 50 mins and copy down notes. Very clear about what he explains, makes history fun... coming from me who has never liked history in my life! At the end of each class, there are a few Qs about the material gone over in class the previous day. Super easy if you take notes! Recmnded! For both 146/7
Lecture everyday and a quiz everyday too. His midterms and finals are hard. He skips back and forth in the book. A lot of assignments and projects.
He is a GREAT teacher, no doubt about that. But the way his grading is set up it's very hard to get a good grade. His midterm and final ammount to 50% of your grade and if you get a high "C" or low "B" on the exams... you did very well. He's an amazing teacher and taught me a LOT but if you want a high grade, he isn't your best option.
I took him for two terms of US History, and I have to say I LOVED HIS CLASS. His notes were all on powerpoint and he posted them online. His daily quizzes were a good grade booster. His class can be kind of hard, but he's so clear on his expectations it's not too difficult. I never used the book and got an A in the class.
Great Teacher... But the only bad thing is that 50% of your grade has to do with the midterm and final, both tests are fairly easy if you go though the study guide he gives and review it!!
Jarvie is a really nice guy, but that does not translate well to his teaching abilities. I barely passed the class, and I am a B student. His tests ARE grade breakers, if you fail the first mid term it'll be hard to get the grade you want. I spent hours going through the study guides, and he didn't even put most of the questions on the test -.-
Jarvie is the most interesting professor I've ever had. Lectures are so thorough he makes the textbook worthless. He will push your study habits and understanding about not just history but government and theory as well. Recommended for people both passionate and on the fence about History. Study hard and even his exams will become enlightening.
Jarvie's class is one of the most interesting history classes I have taken in a while. It was very informative, and while the tests are grade breakers they are usually pretty easy if you attend class, pay attention, and go over the study guide and reading materials.
Really informative and interesting class, despite having very little interest in the subject myself. Jarvie grades primarily on tests and the overall course project, which are very easy to get good grades on if you put effort into studying/researching. He's a laid-back guy, but teaches history well. I recommend him!
I took all three U.S. history classes with Jarvie at 7 AM and loved the class. If you just pay attention during class, you will never have to do the daily homework and you'll do fine on the daily quizzes which are 25% of the grade. Other than that, just study for midterms/final using the study guide, and DO NOT procrastinate on the project!
Jarvie is a gem when it comes to teachers. It's a lecture based class but the way he explains the topics makes it very clear. It's a given that he is truly passionate about what he teaches. The book is pretty much useless so I wouldn't spend money on that. 50% of your grade is based on midterm and final which are not easy... studying is required.
Pretty easy class, except for the midterm and final, which is extremely difficult and requires a lot of study. Fair grader, really subtle and funny. Lectures are thorough.
The class is pretty easy. The midterm and final are hard. The project is bearable if the whole group participates. Lectures everyday and there is a short 2-3-4 question after every class on the topic that was covered the previous day.
I took this class for 146 and 147 First thing you need to know is he does not go chronologically. He groups by theme such as: Government & Politics, Foreign Policy, African Americans etc. Lectures the whole time with a PowerPoint that he posts on canvas, and 3-4 question quiz at the end of class (easy) Midterm & final have wonderful study guides
You do A LOT of group work. He doesn't go in chronologic order so it gets confusing and his lectures are long and boring.
Never done the reading he's assigned, but I'm doing pretty good just doing notes from the slides he does during his lectures. He does daily quizzes on yesterday's/a couple day's ago notes so be prepared :)
He knows the subject perfectly. I really appreciate the fact that he has a very serious approach to the preparation of the lesson and the teaching of the subject. His presentations are amazing and very helpful.
Although Professor Jarvie is funny and nice, his tests were pretty brutal. Somehow I ended up with a "B" in his class even with my "C" tests. 75% of your grade is based on some form of test, and the rest is a group project. His class is interesting and informative, but if you want an "A", this is NOT the class for you.
He's a very smart guy. We got a few quiz questions everyday, if you miss class you get no credit for the few quiz questions.
Jarvie is fantastic and funny too! The class is divided in two: there is a midterm that tests the first half of the class and then there is a final that tests the second half of the class. Tests are based directly off of lectures. And the whole class is organized by topic, not chronologically, which makes WAY more understandable!
Chill dude, fun guy to learn history from. You get questions each day at end of class, so for those, work with your classmates to make sure that they're right. Start doing this on day one to get the best grade. Beware, THE PEOPLE THAT YOU SIT NEXT TO ON DAY ONE ARE YOUR GROUP MEMBERS. Walk into class, see who looks the smartest, sit next to them.
Overall, professor was good. He lectures everyday and at the end of each class he gives a small quiz with 2-3 questions from yesterdays lecture. SO pay attention and take good notes. Also If you don't like group projects, don't take this class. If you can't complete something on time, talk to him ahead of time and he will help you.
I took this class and I did not like Jarvie at all. He didn't really pay attention to his students and just went through his slides. He talked really fast so it was hard to take notes on everything he said and then some of the material on his tests wasn't in the book so it was hard to know what we were supposed to study. Would never take again.
He flies through the notes, and if you want to catch him after class you better be quick! He runs off into the back room. He's nice, but stresses me out when he lectures. Also, do your reading each night because you will have a 3-5 question quiz every day at the end of class on the previous night's reading.
Jarvie is a good teacher but it is hard to get a good grade in his class because his test are very hard. There is the midterm and final. There is also a group project which is pretty easy. I wouldn't recommend buying the book since he puts his powerpoints online. I took his class for 146 and 147 and got an A in 147 without the textbook.
Hard teacher. DON'T TAKE HIM UNLESS YOU WANT TO GET A BAD GPA. He jumps around in history, one day he will be talking about the pilgrims and the next day about some thing way different. There is a quiz almost everyday
His lectures are amazing, so as long as you take thorough notes you will not need the textbook. The only things in the grade book are the mid-term, group project, map&chronology, and final exam. The tests are hard, but all info's on the power points he posts on canvas. Group project has a clear rubric, so don't slack on it!
I took this class in an auditorium during my first term and it was difficult to stay awake because it was really just taking notes on lectures and videos. However he is a really great teacher and is willing to answer questions and talk outside class. Don't get me wrong, it is not a boring class! Super nice, fun, guy!!
One of the classes I took at Clark my first quarter, and has been the only teacher to give me a C. Horrible grader, will take points off essays and not explain why. Confusing class, and expects people to come into class with prior knowledge. Randomly gave pop quizzes and essay questions. Such a boring class overall, videos and boring lectures.
I really liked Professor Jarvie, he gave good lectures and it was pretty easy to follow along. Just be prepared for lots of work. You have homework most nights, and you have a huge mid term project that you do with your group but you get to choose your own groups. Plus, he is a tough grader, with the tests and essays being like 50% of your grade.
Jarvie is a fair teacher, he will answer any questions you have, and he doesn't take attendance out loud, but he gives 3 questions at the end of each day you have to answer with your group (that you choose) and if you weren't there to answer the questions he just marks them wrong.
Jarvie was fine for the most part. He is very lecture-heavy, he had a new powerpoint we went over every day. He wasnt very hands-on which can be good or bad depending on your learning style. He doesnt use canvas, so theres no way to check your grade online, and when I asked him how to check it, he said to just guess based on my quiz questions.
This was my first college class. I loved how her presented the information. I understood the material very well. You do a lot of group work. The only thing I did not like was I did not know my grade. So if you are the type of person that is motivated by a letter grade he will not tell you. And the final was pretty challenging. But overall good man.
I liked taking Jarvie's US history class, he made it really interesting. He mainly lectures but there is a group project that counts for a good portion of your grade. Textbook heavy and pay attention during lectures! A couple notes are helpful while he is talking.
Be ready to listen, take notes if you need them, and review often. Get in a group that will work together well, and you will do swell.
he's very nice and very good at what he does he explains things amazingly. Jarvie makes you work for your grade so it's not the easiest but he makes it fun and entertaining. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone.
Jarvie was overall decent and gave understandable lectures. The one thing that was very frustrating was he does not put grades into canvas so you have no idea what your grade is at all till final grades come out. Also if you get stuck with lazy group members it will be a lot of work for your final project also check canvas for surprise homework!
Jarvie was an amazing teacher. If you had any questions, you could come up to him any time before or after class. Was very pleasant and his lectures were just amazing! he only had a final and a group project which is worked on since the first week of the quarter. we had 2-5 quiz questions each day after class. overall was an easy and a great choice
o my god he gives homework basically everyday AND HIS TEST IS WORTH 50% OF YOUR GRADE. he's extremely vague when giving instructions for ANYTHING I would recommend literally anyone else.
Jarvie does daily lectures that can be hard to stay focused. Homework was not ubbeleivably difficult, but the final was.
Class time consists of one lecture, usually a movie, and like two quiz questions (during which you can look at notes and talk to group mates). One group project due at the end of the term. Jarvie also does not tolerate talking. He gets really fired up at kids that talk during his lectures, but its usually pretty funny to watch.
he doesn't upload grades to canvas so keep that in mind also you do a group project so choose people that will actually work and the final consists of essay and quiz. overall he's a great instructor teaches very well
I really respected him as a teacher, he was funny and his homework wasn't hard at all just time consuming. I had an A- through out the term but when the final came around he didn't prepare us at all, even though I studied really hard I finished the class with a C+. I feel like you have to really know your history prior or have a bomb memory.
I HIGHLY recommend NOT taking jarvie. He gives little to no Instruction on anything and his class is the same every day. You go and he flips through a slideshow of notes, so fast that you cant even write them down. also the final is 50% of your grade and is almost impossible to finish He also PRIDES himself in the fact that almost everyone fails.
John is humorous and is passionate about history. He's also understanding with assignments. John lectured everyday, but it was enjoyable since he often included media elements into his lessons. There was however, a group project at the end of the quarter. He explained the instructions very clearly so your only problem would be your assigned groups.
He is able to keep students engaged in the lectures. He shows multiple videos to help students understand the material better. The homework assignments are almost every night, but he accepts late work.
Jarvie is a good teacher and is very passionate about his work. I enjoyed sitting and listening to his lectures/watching videos. But, you do have daily quizzes which, if you fail your grade drops an entire percent. He doesn't respond to emails either. For finals, you have a 100 q scan tron, a group project, essay, and a map and timeline to turn in.
He was a very good professor. I was able to follow his lectures easily and he made things very engaging for me. I highly recommend him, so long as you are on top of your work, you will do just fine.
didnt learn a damn thing about history of the time frame given. class is more of a political science class then a history class. even the term project hardly fits into what is needed. its a group based project and in of it self it is asinine. Just drones on following power point with intermittent videos that somewhat relate to what is being taught.
Biggest piece of advice, make sure on the first day when he tells you to pick groups, you pick a group with people who are engaged in the class. There are group quizzes and projects so your grade relies heavily on the people in your group. Overall, Jarvie was a great teacher and his lectures are really clear.
The professor is okay. The daily quizzes really impact your grade, so make sure to show up every day to do them. You do everything with your group, so watch out. The group project is extremely difficult if you accidentally pick the wrong people to work with.
Be aware that when you sit in your groups, those will stay for the whole term. You can do quizzes together and ofc the project so careful who you sit with. Chill teacher but did not like how there was no mid-term and the final was cumulative. Homework almost everyday so watch out
Literally loved this proffessor. I hated history classes before his. He's super engaging and friendly and totally knows his stuff. I was even going to take an extra class of his for fun because I enjoyed it so much!
Prior to HIST148, I took Jarvie for 146 and 147 on campus. In place of his lectures (which he does many of), he'll assign videos to watch - mostly documentaries. Put it off till the due date? Get ready to crunch at least several hours. That aside, you'll learn a lot and it'll be frighteningly relevant.
Most of the assignments are based off of group work, which is frustrating when you can't pick who is in your group. He explains things too fast and in a confusing way, and also gave out pop quizzes each day at the end of class. The final exam was pretty difficult as well, but if you took extremely thorough notes you will likely do well.
Online with Jarvie in HIST& 146 was not a very great choice. There are many articles to read and sometimes a few hour long videos to watch each week. Not much was taught and the material was just handed out to read and watch. He also grades assignments randomly and off schedule.
hands down the worse prof I've ever had between CC and university, don't take him, especially if you're running start. Very nonempathetic and doesn't seem to actually care about his student's success. Also not welcoming or approachable. Would never recommend him especially if you care about your gpa
I thought that this class would be easy based on the requirements during the term. However the final was ridiculously hard, I have never failed a fail and I got a %53. There was 65 total questions that you hard to complete in 80 minutes, and most of them had ten possible answers. The questions asked were direct quotes and he gave no study guide
this class wasn't awful but there may be better options. the actual homework is easy but he gives so many things to read/watch each week. it's impossible to go through all of them if u have other classes! but u can definitely still manage to get by if you only go through a few of them. unnecessarily biased sometimes. often takes awhile to grade.
Be ready to watch many videos (4-6 hours worth maybe?)and read a lot from the textbook. I wouldn't take this teacher again because there werent captions to many of the videos provided and it happened again and again for 6 months (took two classes with him, and I'm hoh). Really frustrated with him.
I like how the course work is very organized but he rarely ever gives sufficient feedback on assignments even the final essay. The multiple choice final was horrendous. 90 questions on specific material with a time limit of about 1hr&30min. me and 3 other people i know in his class got around 40-50% on that. brought my grade down by a letter.
For me, I loved this class until the final. I had an A in his class and then failed the multiple choice and it brought my grade down by a letter. I didn't use the textbook and although he assigned hours of videos to watch, I only watched three of them to get the assignment done and his work only took me about one hour every week.
hist147 was a little rough w Jarvie but i thought i'd take another chance w him w hist148. it was even worse. there's sm stuff to watch/read but the assignments r easy in themselves. few tests but they were stupidly difficult & long(esp. the final) last but not least he literally sent me such passive aggressive emails ab my assignments.. v cryptic
Start the week with contemplation questions, watch docs (double speed is your friend!) and read textbook excerpts, end the week with a quiz + forum post. This is all easy. The final is an essay and MCQs- MCQs are HARD, essay is standard. My only complaint is that he seems a little politically charged, but he won't grade you down if you disagree.
John is a pretty easy grader, in most assignments you'll get 10/10 if you meet the length requirements and try your best. The work schedule is the same every week so you know what to expect after a few weeks. Overall I would definitely recommend taking this class!
There were a couple questions you answer per day along with videos and a test at the end of the week. His assignments are very organized! He gives a clear description of what he requires which I love. I would definitely take this professor again :)
I took Jarvies 146 class and it was a complete breeze. For winter I enrolled in his 147. The organization was the same but the comprehension questions were 3 times longer than before. The work itself isnt that hard, but staying on top of it all can become difficult.
Overall he posted the same assignments each week and everything was organized. He made history enjoyable. Although his test throughout the week were 30 min long for 15 questions and you could only take it once. His final was ridiculously hard and brought my grade down a whole letter. Everyone else who took it said the same.
Expect a lot of work. Your week consists of initial questions(due At the beginning of each week), comprehension questions (about 5-8 hours of material you have to look through per week), a quiz on the comprehension questions, and a horrendously long discussion. Jarvie provides no feedback, and is basically MIA all term, expect to teach yourself.
He wasn't very accessible outside of class, but he was clear about grading. The homework was tough and the finals were tougher. The multiple choice really tests your memory and the essay is more open. He doesn't grade homework often but he's pretty forgiving with it.
He had great lectures, but he assigned a lot of homework and was very hard to reach outside of class. I don't know how busy he is, but he responds to emails very late and didn't grade our work until a few weeks before the term ended. I emailed him about a late assignment and he responded 3 weeks later saying he would grade it, but he never did.
Professor is nice, the homework was a bit tough, not too bad, but there wasn't much and the projects were simple and easy to complete. Lectures were engaging and he explains things well. Only thing I have against him: literally inaccessible outside of class. Never answered any of my emails lol. Other than that, great professor.
Get ready to watch a lot of videos! At the beginning of the quarter, there aren't as many, but the last half is probably 60% videos to watch in class. He gives out anywhere between 5-12 questions a week to answer along with a few term projects to catch up with each week. His class is fairly easy, but the final is impossible to get 100%.
All in all, Jarvie is alright. Very lecture heavy, and a decent amount of homework too. You'll learn a lot, but there are probably better professors in the history department. He is definitely not accessible outside class either. Great class from an education standpoint, but not super enjoyable. The multiple choice isn't as hard as everyone says.
Comprehension questions and short multiple choice quizzes each week make up most of your grade. Lectures pretty much the entire class with a few videos and group discussions. 3 easy term long projects. Final is one long multiple choice test and a small paper. Stay on top of everything and it's an easy class.
John Jarvie is amazing. I took his HIST&147 class my first term at Clark, and absolutely loved it. He is really engaging in the lectures. It is a reasonable course load. I loved it so much I took the sequel to the class, HIST&148. It's equally impressive.
Not my favorite professor. I emailed him in the beginning of the year and he NEVER got back to me. Make sure you participate everyday or you won't get any points. Quizes at the end of the week and you really need to pay attention or you won't pass. He also expects you to know everything before hand. Please choose someone else if you can.
I liked his class, it was interesting. One con was how participation in class discussions was a huge part of grades and how harshly he graded it. Assignments weren't difficult but there are short weekly quizzes that are pretty hard to get full points on. There's a final with multiple choice questions and a written answers paper. Study + take notes!
Mr Jarvie was great about teaching US history from the past while relating it to modern day politics. I would not recommend taking this class along side challenging classes because while the homework was not difficult, it was time consuming. Don't wait until the last week to do the timeline and map and study the flowcharts for the written final!!
I took his class for history 146 and it was great, some pretty casual comprehension questions, nothing too bad, but with 148 it is very politics heavy. He has very strong opinions and bases a lot of the lectures around them. He adds excessive comprehension questions based around his opinions.
He's pretty good! He does put you in groups but its overall okay you can choose them for the most part. You should participate for more points but if you don't it wont harm you too much. He's overall okay the not absolute best professor I've had but definitely not the worse. He can be pretty understanding too just listen and pay attention.
John Jarvie is the best professor I have ever had. His lectures can be either a snore fest or the most interesting topic ever. He is impossible to reach outside of class, but he makes up for it with his humor and stories. Took him for both US history 1 and 2 and the only regret I have is not taking 3.
He does not grade on time, he does not respond to emails, and he is a VERY harsh grader !!!
shout out to this guy for showing us the most graphic depiction of slavery the day after the election. in all seriousness, hes great. doesnt answer emails fast, though.
John Jarvie was a decent professor. Most, if not all, of his lectures were biased around his opinions (this includes the weekly comprehension questions you have to complete.) Make sure you participate during the lectures and use the flowcharts for studying. If you pay attention and participate, this class will be fine. He can be funny sometimes.
Professor Jarvie's class is organized, but the workload can be heavy. The weekly assignments and quizzes are manageable, but the final exam is quite challenging. unstuck ai proved helpful for study prep alongside the textbook.
This professor wasn't too bad since he taught pretty well, however, the main issue is the amount of work you need to complete in the class, even with the very often lectures. You must be completing assignments daily to keep up.
Overall, Jarvie's teaching style wasn't for me. I took his class during 2023, in person. While he is open to answering questions, the weekly assignments/tests can be challenging, and tedious at times. Jarvie's difficult to reach through email, and he did not review the syllabus at all on the first day. Be ready to study, and advocate for yourself.
The dude is interesting. It's a ton of reading and videos with weekly questions that can stack up to 80 questions. This class led to many of my crashouts, simply because I did not want to answer 80 questions about a niche event in history. Some of the topics we learned were great but others were very random. Easy A if you have no social life.
Very knowledgeable but definitely teaches based on his opinions and spends a good amount of time bashing Trump/the Republican Party. Teaching history is not about your opinion, so for that reason I don't like him, but overall it's an okay class with homework that's easy to keep up. Attendance is very big; he's very hard to reach outside of class
I wouldn't say his class is hard, it's just very time consuming. 5 in person classes a week, and still a ton of homework. He's VERY political so if you don't agree with him, it may be a problem, and even when it's not a part of the assignment, there are questions about politics.
He's definitely not overbiased. There were several times when I didn't agree with him politically and he still gave me a good grade. When I made a point (that was in opposition to his) in the comprehensions questions and backed it with evidence, he gave me a 10/10 because I actually worked to explain my answer. Workload is high, but manageable.
