Very passionate professor. Knows what he is talking about, and by the end you will as well (granted you are paying attention). Comes off as a hard ass at first, but if you genuinely try he is willing to help. If you are interested and dedicated, you will do fine.
Such an amazing teacher, you will like the course if you are interested in it. LOTS OF READING so only take if you have time to read.
He is very passionate about what he teaches. He can be pretty overwhelming at first, but once you adapt to him he can be really inspiring. Visit him in his office hours... even if you don't have a question. He's a really interesting guy.
He is very pasionate and helpful. He respects students and make the class very ineresting and intense. You need to read a lot and study hard for his class but absolutely worth it. He is very knowledgeable and teaches more than just text book. I highly recommand taking his class. It will be a great experience. Just get ready to study hard.
Professor Karaagac is an excellent teacher with a real talent for helping students to understand public policy, and the systems behind it. I have never learned so much in a course, nor have I ever experienced a professor that was so dedicated! SPEA all the way! :)
Great teacher. Just have to try hard, and read the assigned pieces.
He is a great teacher! There is a lot of work outside of class, but he is a really lenient grader so it is easy to get an A in the class. Class with him was always interesting!
Had him for National and International Policy. Was disrespectful to many in the class, and definitely picked favorites. Tests weren't awful, and the discussions were interesting at times. His ego shined through far too often.
If you are taking HON-212, I would HIGHLY recommend Professor Karaagac. He may come off as intimidating at first, but he is a very humorous and interesting man who has a very unique perspective on literature. He is rather open-minded when grading papers, which makes essay writing less stressful.
go to class
Has a unique character, not recommended to those without a strong background in politics / American history, does NOT use oncourse or anything online (such as providing a class syllabus) or provide written notes/ PowerPoint. Not recommended unless you enjoy lectures and reading a ton of textbook material. Tests are written and very specific
I would guess that in theory he knows some about the subject, but this man has no idea how to convey this. Most of lecture is him listening to himself talk, so they don't actually convey much information. The tests are nitpicky and try to trick you. The topics were interesting but his presentation was atrocious. Take this class, not this professor.
Enthusiastic instructor. He was able to keep the material somewhat interesting through his lectures. May seem a bit crazy at times, but overall great teacher. If you go to class/take part in discussions/read the chapters you should do fine and he'll like you. I missed a few classes and didn't read several chapters and ended up with a B+
he is an intimidating guy at first, but he is very knowledgeable about the subject matter and is enthusiastic about the class. Attend all classes and do all the readings and youll get an A
I would take another class from him without a doubt. He's truly an inspiration to the enthusiastic way of teaching he portrays.
He knows is stuff. As long as you come to class and take notes well then you should be fine. His class is all based on tests but he uses a fair curve.
Enjoyed going to class. Very funny and entertaining professor.
Difficult class but very, very interesting. One of the smartest professors I've ever had. Do NOT take if you want an easy A. Attendance isn't mandatory but you will fall behind if you don't go and don't do the readings.
This class requires you to read and attend lecture. Karaagac is one of the smartest professors I have ever had and he definitely makes class interesting and relevant. He can be intimidating at first, but he is an incredible professor.
At first, I hated this guy because he's kinda arrogant. But then I realized that I actually liked coming to class because he took a genuine interest in the students and the material. He's a funny, smart guy. DO THE READINGS or you will NOT pass the exams. They're easy reads and his notes are crystal clear. He also gives a curve!
At first I was extremely intimidated by Professor Karaagac! After getting used to his teaching style I noticed just how great of a professor he was. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable about the material, but he has a passion for policy as well as his students. It is crucial to attend class and participate. If you don't read you will fail.
He's the man. His tests can be pretty difficult and you're going to have to read a lot, but his lectures are very clear and very informational. He is pretty cool about curving the exams and for a class about policy, he keeps it pretty interesting.
Harder version of this class but Karaagac is one of the best teachers that I have had during my time at IU. He is tough on you, but you will learn more than you ever thought you could in a 100 level SPEA class. Although attendance is optional, you WILL NOT pass the tests if you don't come to class.
100 level class being treated like a 200300 level class. Requires background in politics and extensive American History
Best professor I have had at IU. Take a class with Karaagac only if you are willing to show up, participate in class, do the readings, and work hard. However, he makes it REALLY easy to care about the class because he so engaging. He also really cares about his students so if you convey your interest in the subject matter he will befriend you.
YOU HAVE TO GO TO CLASS. He gives out the answers to what will be on the test in lecture, if you don't go, you will fail. READ READ READ, be prepared for class and read the material. He's a great professor, knows what he is talking about, and truly cares about the students who care about his class.
Karaagac is the most amazing and engaging professor I have ever had. He says, "If your boss knows your name, your less likely to be fired." Him saying this to our class made me realize how well he wanted those of us that attended class to do. He is very old school. He doesn't use a powerpoint, which is refreshing. I love this professor.
One of the most energetic, exciting and interesting professor's I have taken at IU. Although he is tough, taking his class is well worth it. He not only pushes student to strive to their best but he also gives helpful advice/insights into students' future. If you show up to succeed, you most likely will!! A teacher to take for the teaching!
This homie is one of my favorite professors I've ever had. He is crystal clear and really challenges you. Its not an easy class but you will get out what you put in.
If you do not have a background in politics DO NOT TAKE THIS WITH HIM. 5 people dropped out of this class, including myself (there were 25 people in it). He is kind of crazy and all over the place. His tests are the hardest I've ever taken and made no sense. His lectures are very politically biased and he doesn't like when you argue that.
This dude is very ferda and he is one of the realest in the game right now.
very good
John Karaagac really cares about his students, he's just way too hard on them. It's too hard for 100 level course, and if you don't have a great background in policy and government, it's not something that I would take.
Too hard for a 100 level class. Never quite know what to study or what will be on the test. Lots of memorization. LOTS of reading. If you take this class, DO THE READING! Professor takes lots into consideration--writing style, major, what you wear. He is constantly recruiting for his CARI Program. You don't matter to him unless you show potential.
Student's like to give Professor Karaagac a bad rep, but he honestly can be one of the most inspirational professors within SPEA. He wants to maximize your potential and actually believes in a lot of his students. As long as you're up for the task, take his class. Especially if you're interested in the CARI program.
There is a lot of reading and Karaagac is pretty old school and doesn't use a powerpoint during lectures. If you put in the work, the class is definitely worth it. Karaagac really does want you to do well and expects you to be prepared for class. He's intimidating at first, but once you get to know him the class is way more fun
Professor Karaagac is often lambasted by students who've taken his class, but you will get out of the class what you put in. He is wild, and you need to pay attention, but I have never respected any teacher as much as I respect Karaagac. He requires you to be at your best every class, and I felt more prepared as a student for the rest of college.
His lecturing style is fast paced and can be hard to follow. In order to do well in the class you will really need to work for it by reading and coming to class prepared with questions. Really knowledgeable guy but I find his teacher style hard. At the very least go to office hours so he knows who you are.
Professor Karaagac is an incredibly intelligent man and a very specific teacher. His style of teaching may be something unlike you've experienced before, but his class is well worth the work and focus required. I learned a lot from him. Also, he has a remarkable memory. He is devoted and caring to students he sees potential in.
This class is challenging but rewarding. Karaagac is very entertaining and a bit intimidating, but you'll definitely never be bored in the class. If you work hard, you can get a good grade. Make sure to do the readings, as he cold calls mercilessly.
all you need to know for the class: dye is a huge populist
This is my dude! He really changed the way I view my education and inspired me to work hard. I feel so good when I leave his class like I could take on the world. He is so hilarious and taught me how to be a better student as well as a better citizen. Take his class you will love him!
Professor Karaagac was my professor in the second semester of my freshman year, and he really opened up my eyes to what college is supposed to be. He is kind, smart, caring, and he wants every one of his students to pass. 10/10
I think that he is remarkably intelligent, but often times gets caught up in judgments of his students. His style is hard to swallow, and his tests are the worst I've ever taken but if you're willing to work hard he recognizes that.
His class was difficult, and he's entertaining? He prides himself on not inserting his opinion on subject matter, but still does so. Hardest (and most rewarding) section of the course, but be ready to roll your eyes if large personalities annoy you. Learned a lot. Bite the bullet, and take it with him. Do the readings and don't wear hats in class
One of the best professors at IU. You have to work hard in this class, but it is worth it. The material is not that difficult if you keep up and attend class. You have to attendance class because he gives out exam questions. Overall, great professor who taught me to try my hardest in school. He is really understanding and will boost your grade.
I took SPEA-V160 (National and International Policy) in Fall 2016 within the Civic Leaders. It was by all accounts an excellent class because of Professor Karaagac commitment to teaching. Reading and attendance are required and frankly should be expected of any course. Tests are tough but fair and he does curve, quite generously at times.
Best professor I've had during my time at IU. He pushes you hard and it's challenging but by the end you'll be thankful. Learned so much from him - about the world and life. Extremely intelligent and bright man. Even though students sometimes complain, he does care a lot for his students. Get to know him and take his class it is worth every second
Karaagac is.... interesting. He seems to be pretty conservative and lets it invade his lectures a bit. Additonally, I found some out of date misinformation in the readings. Other than that, he's very entertaining and at the end of the semester boosted me from an A- to an A. Good opportunity, take this class to say you had him.
For V-450 he gives about 100 pages of reading per week and you must know the material frontwards and back. Gives very specific exam and quiz questions that could have easily been skipped over if you aren't a diligent reader. You also must be able to discuss the readings in class and if you can't he will call you out on it.
Firstly, he is very well versed in the material that he teaches, and while the readings are incredibly essential to ensure knowledge of what is going on in class, his personality is a mixed bag. He is an entertaining and engaging professor, but if a student does not live up to his standards, they will have a tough time with the class.
Karaagac is the best professor at SPEA. It is nothing short of tragic that he's untenured. Be warned--real teaching begets real learning. Students are often unprepared for the rigor of his first-year surveys because, well, most SPEA survey classes are easy A's. Don't let this taint your impression! If you really want to learn, take his classes.
Professor Karaagac was the only professor in SPEA I learned from this semester. His class is challenging but you will learn so much. If you're not willing to put in work and get a lot out, this is not for you. He cares about his students and offers fantastic advice.
Without a doubt one of the most challenging and engaging educators I've had. His lectures are fast-paced and packed with information but great to participate in. At times he can like he's asking too much but you get out of the class what you put in. A brilliant prof who wants students to succeed. Any class with him is not for the faint of heart.
His classes are hard but fair. The reading is lengthy but the class discussion makes good use of it. There are no superfluous assignments. During class, JK will challenge students with cold calls. Outside of class, JK is demonstrably willing to help students clarify any confusions. Any student who does the reading will do well in his classes.
Karaagac is a very entertaining lecturer and has been one of my favorite professors so far at IU. This is a very tough class compared to most 100 level courses, but you will learn a lot.
Karaagac is one of the best professors I've had at IU. That being said, he definitely expects you to work and do the readings on time, so you probably shouldn't take this class if you won't. He expects the best out of his students, is very encouraging, is great to go to for advice, and is easy to reach out to. Tests are hard but not unfair.
Professor K is a very good teacher. He expects a lot from you, so don't take this class if you aren't ready to do a heavy amount of reading. He's a little intimidating at first but I think he really cares about his students and wants you to do well. He doesn't waste your time with the readings or the lectures & he's good about asking for questions.
Karaagac is insanely passionate, knowledgeable, and he enjoys throwing books when he gets excited about what hes saying. Theres a LOT of reading in this course, but his exams are definitely fair if youve taken the time to read your material. Be ready to commit to reading and attending class, or you wouldnt do well here.
He is a very good teacher and he goes over the material really well and definitely sets his students up for success. If you do the majority of the reading and take good notes during the lectures, you can do really well on the tests, but he can be VERY condescending, and he HEAVILY favors his CLC class over the regular, and will make it very obvious
He's definitely a character. His classes have very few grades which can be a problem if you struggle with longer multiple-choice style tests. His lectures while sometimes only tangentially related to the material are the ones that kept me most engaged in an online lecture. Do the readings every night and you should pass with no problems.
This professor does not teach, he exposits text. He is not interested in helping you understand a topic, he is interested in ensuring you know how to read a textbook. Grades are heavily dependant on tests, and the questions on the test are made to trip you up. He's an academic bully.
I promise I would not steer you students wrong. Although this professor is very smart, he is very intimidating. Even if you study your ass off and read all of the readings, the tests are still impossible. Your grade is dependent on 3 exams and one essay ONLY. This is the hardest class I have ever taken.
Professor Karaagac is an amazing professor! If you care about the class and do the readings you will do well in the class. Professor Karaagac genuinely cares about his students, especially those who put in the work. Hes such a great person and professor. I highly recommend his classes to anyone.
I dropped this class after the first exam because all the exams are basically play-by-play questions of the hundreds of pages of reading. His lectures were amazing but I could not handle his exams. If his exams were based on lectures it would've been a great class, but do not recommend if you're not great at learning from only reading,.
Easily the best/most knowledgeable professor I've had at O'Neill. Lectures are filled with enthusiasm-- it is impossible to be bored. Do the readings and participate in class and you will do well. Exams are somewhat difficult but fair if you have done the work. Take this class if you want to learn. Don't if you are lazy. Professor K is the best!!!
Great character and passionate about the class. In the beginning he can be a bit intimidating, but you'll start to like him eventually. Material was very interesting and he had a great impact on how much I learned. He assigns a reading for every class so be prepared. My grade was composed by three tests and a group project that was not easy at all.
do the reading.
At first, this course was difficult, but you get used to the pace of the class. The tests are based on the readings so reading is mandatory. After a while, you know what to look for in the readings and in the lectures to do good on the tests.
He is extremely knowledgeable in his field and had a great sense of humor throughout the lectures, but I wouldn't recommend this class. Your grade is determined by only 3 exams and a group project. The exam questions were tricky even though I completed the required readings and his lectures were based predominantly on student questions.
Karaagac is very knowledgeable and animated. The readings and lectures are incredibly informational. The tests are pretty analytic and difficult, but you'll learn what sort of questions he asks and how to study. However, he treats kids who he can tell don't read the material worse, intentional or not, so read everything assigned and participate.
The man is mentally unhinged, DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. His one goal in teaching this course is to make it has hard as possible. You learn nothing. It's like being in high school. Very little talk of actual policy and more so a 12th grade history lesson. Exams are all regurgitating information. No application of what you know just memorization.
He teeters the fine line between brilliance and insanity. His class is difficult but effort is recognized. Must read to pass and thoroughly understand it to get an A. It's a challenge, but you will learn so much more than other SPEA Gen-Eds. If you're looking for an easy A this class is not it, but you will get the most bang for your buck.
He is captivating. That's probably the only good thing I have to say about his teaching style. He makes this course so much harder than it needs to. I felt like he barely actually talked about policies. I do not understand why his rate my professor is so good when he makes a 100 level course way more difficult than it should be.
Karaagac really does care about his students and makes sure he gives them a really valuable class each and every time. His class was very substantive. He cuts to the chase and gives you the information you need to know for the exams. The exams can be difficult but as long as you come to class and pay attention and do the readings you'll be fine.
Prof. Karaagac teaches a tough class. Reading, participation, and effort are necessary. These efforts are also recognized. To me, this was a difficult class for a 100 level; however I definitely feel I got the absolute most for my money with this class and genuinely learned material. His lectures were informative and beneficial.
J.K. gives complete mad scientist vibes but he does it well. If your gonna read do it for this class. Participate, do your work and he will make it a point that you pass his class with a good mark. You are paying for an education and he is dedicated to making sure you get one. Slightly hard for a 100-level though
His class will make u feel that is what I am paying for. But be ready to read and take class note. You need to work hard and participate in class to receive a good grade. He will see your hardwork and respond to it. Like what he always say "Good luck is for those unprepared".(PS: Love his lecture but hate his exam. Thank you, Professor Karaagac!)
Despises mediocrity. Big energy! Don't draw attention to yourself or he will call you out! Get ready!
Most amazing and inspiring professor. Would take his classes a million times. Definitely a tough class for a 100 level class, but you will learn a ton. He is the absolute GOAT
He is a very intelligent professor, probably too smart to be teaching a 100-level course. I would only recommend taking him if you are truly passionate about the topic. The class is not easy whatsoever.
Best class I've ever taken. If you don't want to be pushed don't take it, but I thought the material was interesting, lectures were super engaging, and if you pay attention and participate he will take note and help you out.
Karaagac is a phenomenal professor but you will have to work hard to succeed. The reading is 100% mandatory. His tests are atrociously hard, but he does curve well. Definitely a class to study for and you will be challenged, but if you work hard and participate, Karaagac will go the extra mile for you. Would take again!
dropped the class because it was extremely hard for a 100-level Gen-Ed course. mostly SPEA-kids were there, I personally couldn't keep up with the content as it was out-of-line for my career. if you enjoy world politics and a bit of a challenge, go ahead and take him.
The professor gave me a great first impression to IU. The class was difficult, but as long as you read, and show your effort the professor will see that and reward you for that effort. He is also a very funny and personable guy as well!
The fact that he has so many good reviews is astounding to me. John will make you buy 3 books within one year, have 0 course structure except for reading and "lecture" which is typically just rambling. He will humiliate u in front of the class, and his test are insanely difficult. He expects you to be an expert on everything that he is.
This man is trying too hard. He is all over the place when he talks and makes a 100-level course much more difficult than it should be. He goes from screaming to talking so quietly that you cannot hear him on a daily basis. He seems to have a "holier than thou" attitude about him and he is emotionally erratic.
Love this guy. He can be tough and call you out but if you show you read the material and participate in class you will be rewarded.
He acts like if you do not read then you will fail but then speaks about the reading the whole time. I did not do the readings and have been fine, I am a senior but I think if you can grasp the material in class you will be ok. He is truly crazy and talks like you are stupid if you do not know specific facts.
Prof. K and his class are chaotic and lack structure. He shouts about unrelated topics, randomly calls on students, and switches topics abruptly. No powerpoints or study materials are provided, making difficult exams much harder. Prof. K makes this course extremely difficult for students to succeed in; no positives about Prof. K and this class.
This was a very difficult and challenging class.
This was my least favorite course of the semester by far. The topic area of course was interesting but ruined by the Professor. Karaagac's lecture can often be unclear due to heavy rambling and long readings. He does not create a welcoming environment for students by calling out students for using the bathroom, phone use, etc.
This was one of the hardest classes I have taken because of Professor Karaagac. Not only was the class not welcoming, causing me to have anxiety before going to class, the tests are written to be filled with trick questions. No slides for lectures, and he will call you out for anything he feels like.
Prof K is the most engaging and entertaining professor I have had at college. If you go to class and pay attention, participate and read the book you will get an A and have a good time simple as that.
It's very simple: if you read what you are supposed to, are willing to engage in the discussion during class about the reading, and you are actually interested in learning about the course material you will do well and get a lot from the experience. If you don't do any of that, you will probably hate it.
he's manic.
Just don't. Don't even think about taking this. The man basically says whatever he wants for lecture. The books are long and difficult to retain. The pop quizzes were ridiculous majority of the time. I had to WORK my way to an A-. Even with a decent grade in the class I constantly felt I was not learning anything. Just take a different V182.
lectures were not helpful for me personally.
Expect to read at least 100 pages of boring material a week, if not more. Weekly pop quizzes that had very niche questions and memory based. He does not use slides, canvas, or study guides. Only take if you have a photographic memory and can read 50 pages a night. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU VALUE YOUR FREE TIME OR YOUR OTHER CLASSES.
So I took SPEA-V 550. I lasted 5 classes. This professor is very loud and talks like a sales person. With in the 5 classes I have taken, we have barely talked about the subject of the course or the readings he claims are important. However we have discussed how gov. officials look on camera. No structure to the course as well.
This guy cannot slow down for 2 seconds to let you take notes. No slides. No explanations. Asks you a question and then interrupts you before you can give an answer. His handwriting is unreadable. He does not make any connections when giving lectures and the order he decides to bring topics up. He will also put you on the spot all the time.
This class can be a real challenge, but if you're willing to put in the effort, you'll find it rewarding. Definitely use Unstuck AI and the textbook to stay on top of the material.
Exam heavy, good professor, very knowledgable, assumes a lot of knowledge though
Professor Karaagac is a great guy. His class is the level of your average AP class which might be challenging for some freshman but is the standard in college. At the end of the day, if you are willing to read and you go to lectures, you should easily get an A in this class. If you want to slack off and don't care about learning take someone else.
Sometimes he's awesome sometimes I'm hyperventilating Learned more than other courses but, Had anxiety attacks before class… Would shame kids for not knowing the answer. Talked a lot about "smarts" in students, I was confused most of the time and he made me feel the stupidest I have ever felt. (I read, studied, and attended office hours)
Your entire grade is based off of 3 exams, quizzes, and your attendance. The exams are extremely difficult. There was a 20% curve on most exams because of how low the average was each time. Even with a 20% curve it's almost impossible to get a good grade. He judges you for not having previous knowledge even though it's a 100 level class. Don't take
I personally believe that students who gave this professor a poor rating were not students who regularly attended the lectures, or read the required textbooks. If you read the required chapters and pay attention to the lectures (and participate, this will impact your grade) then you will succeed in the class. Strict but a caring professor.
Dr. Karaagac is by far the most challenging professor I had at IU. With that being said, he really showed me what it means to hold yourself accountable as a college student. If you go to class, study the material, and engage with him, you will succeed. If you want to be successful in college and your future, this is the reality you must accept.
This professor is really a nice person. At the beginning, he seemed a little bit intimidating, often using his big blue eyes staring at you, like a little lion. Just like the odd old neighbor in Disney animations, initially you thought he's intimidating, and finally you found he's a kind and lovely person. Talk to him, he's funny and adorable.
DONT TAKE HIS CLASS. He doesnt use slides he just talks all class and talks fast. Studied for hours for the exam and was still so lost. If you take this class you will regret it and probably be crying.
Although he is extremely knowledgeable, he's incredibly rude to students and insults them for not knowing niche things. His exams have nothing to do with his lectures, which have no slides or any structure. Beyond difficult for a 100 level course and his office hours are completely pointless.
John is probably the most insane professor in SPEA. Lectures are just him talking AT you at a rapid pace. No slides, nothing on canvas. Every test curved by 20%+ because everyone failed. He will degrade you for not knowing random niche topics + office hours are also him degrading you, not helping. he does way too much for 100-level. do not take.
If you want to learn, take his class. If you are lazy, take someone else. Class is pretty easy and the grading is generous. His lectures are entertaining and he is super knowledgable.
What a character he is, get ready to be entertained. His class is really really really hard. But you learn so much. He wants to challenge you and wants you to do your best. You HAVE TO DO THE READINGS. You can't fall behind. Go to office hours because the TA's are really helpful. If you want to further your education this is the guy. Can be scary.
Do not take this class if you do not ABSOLUTELY need it. Professor Karaagac was horrible. He did not have slides and barely explained the materials which made it harder to understand. He just yells at the class and expect you to know things automatically. I would not wish this class and professor on my worst enemy and I hate them so listen to me.
If you have any choices in life, choose not to take this class. The tests are so hard and he doesnt explain content well. He has no slides and in class he just talks at you super quickly. So hard do not take if its the only class left at IU
If you talk to him in his office hours, respect his way of lecturing, read the textbook, and show up- you will be fine. He wants his students to succeed and gets frustrated by those that do not put in effort. Read the texts closely, there will be quizzes at least once a week over the reading.
The professor was funny. Lecture-style class, with him speaking from the dome with no slides. Lots of reading, which is vital to passing. All in all, a good professor who genuinely cares about education.
No slides and speeds through his talk. Adds things to tests that you did not learn about.
Professor Karaagac has a giant personality and if you do not like it, you will not enjoy his class. He moves way too quickly through material and has no slides to refer back to. Unless you have previous knowledge of world geography and politics, you will spend most most of your time learning presidents and capitals.
No study guides, tests based on in person ramblings. On tenure, so will not be fired.
